The reality: Georgia is just not very good

Wow! September has flown by! So what did we learn on Saturday?

1. Georgia is just not very good: I could spin it for you Bulldog fans, but I won’t. You could rationalize the South Carolina loss.  It was on the road and Georgia was playing a new defense against a great, young running back. You can explain the Arkansas loss and praise Georgia’s comeback to tie the game in the fourth quarter. But after Saturday’s loss to Mississippi State in Starkville, I can only come to one conclusion: Georgia is just not very good.

I see an offensive line that has underachieved. I see running backs that are pretty average. I see a defense that really doesn’t have the personnel to run the scheme that is being employed. Yeah, Georgia was missing its star player (A.J. Green) who finally returns this week. That is a factor, but it doesn’t explain everything.

Mississippi State played hard and deserved to win the game. I’m not taking anything away from them. They played with a sense of urgency after two straight losses.

I thought there would be a sense of urgency for Georgia’s players to avoid an 0-3 start in the SEC. I was wrong.

Georgia fans have a right to be upset. Georgia should be better than this. But you need to know that Mark Richt is going to be the head coach at Georgia in 2011. He deserves the opportunity to fix whatever is wrong with this football team and this program.  Now if things don’t get better Richt  may have some tough decisions to make when this season is over. Let’s see how the season plays out.

2. Russell Wilson is the real deal: Wilson sliced and diced the Georgia Tech defense but you know what? Wilson is going to do that to a lot of defenses this season. With a quarterback like Wilson a team has a chance to win every Saturday. Suddenly, N.C. State’s Thursday night date with Florida State (Oct. 28) and visit to Clemson (Nov. 6) look a lot different.

Georgia Tech needs to put that game behind them and try to get on a little roll here with Wake Forest, Virginia, and Middle Tennessee coming up before a trip to Clemson. If Georgia Tech is going to get back in the ACC race, the Yellow Jackets have to protect the passer and the Joshua Nesbitt has got to throw it better.

3. There is a reason that Alabama has won 18 straight games: Some teams just know how to win despite adversity. Alabama’s defense was being carved up by Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett for about three quarters on Saturday in Fayetteville. But head coach Nick Saban was patient. He and defensive coordinator Kirby Smart made a couple of adjustments to get more pressure on Mallett. Then they decided to smash mouth the Razorbacks and wear them out. The result was a 24-20 victory and No. 1 Alabama stays undefeated with Florida coming to Tuscaloosa on Saturday. It was an impressive thing to watch. Alabama beat the No. 10 team last week and plays No. 7 Florida on Saturday and goes to No. 22 South Carolina on Oct. 9. If South Carolina had beaten Auburn the Gamecocks might have climbed into the Top 10 giving the Crimson Tide three straight games against the Top 10 in consecutive weeks.

Bottom line on Alabama: After jumping out to a 20-7 lead, Arkansas really wanted to win that game. Alabama expected to win the game.

4. Keep your eye on Stanford at Oregon: Oregon won a hard-fought game over Arizona State but when the coaches poll came out Sunday Oregon had jumped over TCU into the No. 4 position. And if Oregon can beat No. 13 Stanford (4-0) at home on Saturday, I predict the Ducks just might make Boise State uncomfortable in that No. 3 spot. Stanford, meanwhile, is just kicking everybody. The Cardinal’s 35-0 win over UCLA (which trounced Texas 34-12 last Saturday) looks even more impressive now. Stanford’s Andrew Luck is the best quarterback in the Pac-10. Florida-Alabama is the game of the week, but Stanford-Oregon is a close second.

5. Auburn showed me a lot of grit on Saturday: I’ll be honest. I wasn’t sure that Auburn had enough left in the tank to beat a team like South Carolina. The Tigers had been in a real slug fest the week before against Clemson. I thought fatigue would catch up with them in the fourth quarter. But quarterback Cameron Newton is turning out to be everything they hoped he would be. And the Auburn defense hung tough, held Marcus Lattimore to just 33 yards, and got the turnovers when they needed them in the fourth quarter. After Louisiana-Monroe this week, the Tigers have a couple more shootouts coming up with Kentucky in Lexington on Oct. 9 and Arkansas home on Oct. 16. Then they get LSU at home on Oct. 23.

Great point. Yeah Mark is having a down year because he’s got a new squad of players. That sometimes happens in football. Just look at Texas. If Texas played better teams they’d have lost more games by now.

Hey War Damn Eagle – Newton is a fine QB and playing well. However, please don’t tell us he didn’t steal the laptop which he threw from the dorm window. Not charged and not convicted does not mean he didn’t do it. So why’d you bring it up? LOL, whiny fodder!!!

Not by a long shot, ma’am. Auburn was ranked too low and Oklahomo and USC were both ranked higher. Oh, and in case you missed it. USC CHEATED AND WAS STRIPPED OF THEIR TITLE.

“So if it happens again, you got no one to blame but yourself, twice.’

????????????? That makes no sense, ma’am. If we go undefeated and beat Bama AND Florida you’re saying Auburn will be left out?????? LOL

If Auburn goes undefeated, a big IF, there is no way they will be left out.

sorry jumbeauxtiger-
I missed the chic-fil-a classic this year. My bad.
I understand the 4home 4 road SEC schedule, thank you.

It’s just lame when a school only plays 4 road games out of 12 games. At least LSU plays a tough out of conference schedule… can’t take that away from them.

I think Richt has “earned” another season to turn things around in Athens – of course, I also thought Bobby Cremins had earned another season and his last one didn’t go too well.
Both UGA and GT have a great deal of work to do if the game at the end of the season is not going to be both team’s last of the year. Right now it looks like it will be two 6-5 teams playing

Tony – if Georgia is “not very good” and was tied with Arkansas with 16 seconds left in the game and Arkansas could have beaten teh number one team in the nation, what does that say about the so-called number one team in the nation? More to the point, what does it say about you in light of the fact that you have been picking a team that is “not very good” to win every week? ANSWER: you are worse than not very good.

If (and that’s a big if) Auburn beats Bama & FLA and has a chance for a Nat title, and the same scenario is the same with 3 teams vying for 2 slots… Auburn will not be chosen if they continue to play 4 road games and a lame out of conference sked. It always depends on what else has happened in CFB that determines everything. I hope you know that.

bamaguy..I was very fortunate to work for Coach Bryant as a GA his last year, then Coach Perkins, and stayed one year under Curry in the Athletic Training Staff. I came back to do an internship under Stallings for the N.C. I am more proud of the opportunity to work that one year under Coach Bryant and Coach Stallings than the Championship ring I was given( they included me even though I only traveled to 2 away games and the Miami game) . I was afforded the opportunity on many many occasions through my father to have time with Coach Bryant and he was one heck of man, I can put Coach Stallings in that same category. Many people do not know this but Coach Bryant and Coach Dooley were really good friends away from the game and if you ever have the opportunity to ask Coach Dooley about their relationship it might surprise many UGA fans.

Working for the SEC in various capacities has allowed me to meet many great leaders of young men and women, and see alot of facilities in and around the SEC. I would do it for free if I had to, but the weekend warrior thing in the fall is alot of fun and the spring baseball schedule is brutal.

I just have to say, as a casual observer, that UGA has a big decision to make….
Why? Because nothing is going to change under this current coaching regime. I admire CMR’s dedication to looking at the positive side of people, but in the end this will fail him..Just as it failed B Bowden at FSU…
Just because someone is a “great” athlete does NOT make this person a desirable presence on a college campus. Other factors must be weighed in in recruiting, and CMR does not do this….
Michael Adams is tired of the incidents ( as I would be) and I feel he will right the ship if CMR cannot.
Don’t tell me I cannot find 85 worthy STUDENT/athletes in the state of GA who can be coached up to play at a competitive level as they complete their courses in an acceptable manner while behaving themselves..Good grief….

I’m trying to make a point to a person that thinks road schedules should determine if a team goes to the championship.

WV was not ranked at the beginning of the season. UNC was touted as great and they lost and they are not ranked anymore.

JB at 8:21am this morning has posted a well-thought out and soundly reasoned blog. JB, I agree with you.
UGA has invested a pile of dough and goodwill into CMR. A divorce will prove costly in dollars and cents. We like the man, but are disgusted with how he has let the staff slide to mediocrity. It is as if he has put everything on auto-pilot and just turned loose of the steering wheel and put that nice guy persona on full speed ahead.
I would advise Adams and McGarity to find a crisis management team and hire it, put it to work, give it some time to make a range of recommendations, and implement them no matter what. Withstand the fallout, and move forward. The status quo is intolerable for the fans and the University as well.

Welcome to the FulmerZone UGA. UT went through this in middle the decade with the 5-6 record in 2005 but many wanted to give him time to right the ship. You see how that has turned out don’t you. Richt peaked in 2008. He will never get it back at UGA. That ship has sailed.

no need to analyze games and coaches any longer. we, fellow dawgs, have hit the pits, and it won’t get better this season or the next or the next unless there is a ‘house cleaning’ and and willingness to start from vandy territory and try to move up. this season is over; start now on a new track. forget recruiting five-star thugs; go only for those who want to play for georgia with a passion. check their records and character first. replace coaches who don’t want to win and who don’t show the fire that inspires teams, like erk did. and like that miss st. coach showed before the ga game. arrests — off the team immediately, no questions asked; let them hassle with the law. bad play calling, missed tackles, and on and on — fire the coaches and make the players accountable. let the young guys play; take off the red shirts. if we lose the rest of the games, so what; it is all about just playing football now. there is NOTHING left to work for except maybe a toilet bowl. if we get offered that, refuse. stay home and get the act together. the money won’t make a difference, and no real dawg fan wants to endure another s–t bowl. tuck tail, and regroup. i’d rather see a new dawg team with frosh and sophs than than the inept, fumbling, mess we have now. murray is the only one on the team who cares. bring in the kids and ditch the rest, including the coaches.

Chris, you were wrong about being “FIRST” and you’re wrong about Mark Richt getting fired if Georgia loses to Fla and Tech. As Tony said, he will absolutely be head coach at UGA in 2011. If, however, he doesn’t win with a complete squad and experience with the new defensive scheme… then he’ll probably resign. And btw, Donnan’s recruits had nothing to do with Georgia finishing the season at # 2 in the country just three years ago. Get a clue!
