RIP, Kenny McKinley

Nobody asked me but…..

1. RIP, Kenny McKinley. The first time Steve Spurrier saw Kenny McKinley he wondered to himself: “Are we actually recruiting this guy?” McKinley, a quarterback at South Cobb High School, was so skinny that a stiff breeze would blow him away, Spurrier told me. But on that visit to the South Carolina campus McKinley made it clear that he wanted to play for Spurrier. He had seen how Spurrier had taken another high school quarterback, Jacquez Green of Fort Valley, and turned him into a top flight receiver at Florida.  McKinley turned out of be one of Spurrier’s favorites, breaking most of South Carolina’s receiving records. He was great player and a very good kid. It’s heartbreaking to think that someone that young would take his own life.

2. There are bad injuries. There are devastating injuries.  And then there is Houston: Your heart has to go out to Case Keenum, the quarterback at Houston. Keenum is one of only two quarterbacks in Division I-A history (Texas Tech’s Graham Harrell is the other) to post consecutive seasons of passing for over 5,000 yards. With a little less than 5,000 this season Keenum would have broken the all-time record for passing yardage set by Hawaii’s Timmy Chang. Keenum tore his ACL against UCLA trying to make a tackle after an interception. He’s done for the year. Keenum’s backup, Cotton Turner, suffered a broken collar bone and he’s also out for the season. Houston, the favorite to win Conference USA, will now go with freshman quarterback Terrance Broadway.

3. Trent Richardson returning kickoffs. Now THAT’s scary: With everything Alabama has going for them it almost seems unfair that the Crimson Tide has Trent Richardson returning kickoffs. Richardson, the sophomore from Pensacola, ran for 144 yards against Penn State on Sept. 11 while Mark Ingram, the Heisman Trophy winner, sat out recovering from a knee injury. Ingram came back against Duke with 151 yards (on just nine carries) and so Richardson got to return kickoffs and took one 91 yards for a touchdown. Of course I wonder if Richardson should be returning kicks because of the possibility of injury. I’m not worried about RICHARDSON getting injured. I just think he might really hurt somebody when he gets up ahead of steam.  Quality running backs returning kicks is not unprecedented. Remember that Clemson running back C.J. Spiller returned an NCAA record seven kickoffs for scores.

4. Kentucky would be wise to watch for the fake against Gators: Since Urban Meyer became Florida’s head coach, the Gators have faked eight punts. All eight of them have gone for first downs. Last week against Tennessee Florida’s Omarius Hines gained 36 yards on a fake punt to keep a drive alive. It turned the momentum of the game towards Florida, which won 31-17. “Sometimes when you’re struggling on offense you have to do something to jump start things,” Meyer said. Frank Beamer of Virginia Tech gets a lot of credit for special teams play and he should. But Meyer is one of the better special teams coaches I’ve seen in a long time.

5. You’d better keep your eye on TCU’s Andy Dalton: There are a lot of good quarterbacks in college football but I don’t think anybody is playing better right now than Dalton. The senior, TCU’s all-time winner with 32 victories as a starting quarterback (he passed the great Sammy Baugh on Sept. 4), completed 21 of 23 passes last Saturday in a 45-10 destruction of Baylor. Dalton started the game with 11 consecutive completions. On the season Dalton has completed 53 of 71 passes for a completion rate of 74.6 percent. TCU plays at SMU Friday night.

If you’ve got a problem TALK TO SOMEONE.

Often times TOUGHING IT OUT, is just a myth.

My friends did 12 weeks on Parris Island and they STILL go and talk to someone. I know Corpsman, Recon, Fire and Rescue, you name it, who have someone to talk to with a degree.

DON’T WAIT.

Javier Arenas was a great punt returner for Alabama but not kick off guy so Bama has not had
a good kick off returner sense Protho #4 from 04 and 05. Trent Richardson is in a different
talent zone then the other running backs in the SEC except Mark Ingram who is the heart beat
of Alabama football. RTR

Mississippi State is one of Georgia’s patsies. They usually struggle and beat South Carolina, Ark. but not Miss. State. Mullins will pass Richt like all the rest but not this year, and when they beat Miss. State for the 100th time they will make it sound like they beat Alabama.

Dawgs rebound against MSU this week. It should be a hard hitting game, but UGA has too much talent for the speckled dawgs.

R can saw has a chance to show their wares against Bama this weekend…should be a good game. Let’s see who has what now….

USC at Awbarn will be another great game…….does the team that beat UGA show up on the plains, or does the team that struggled to put away Furman come to town? If Carolina isn’t ready to strike from the opening whistle, their dream season will begin to lose some luster. The War Eagle Tigers aren’t flashy, but they are determined. The Battlin’ Chickens had better hope they can pound Lattimore all night to control the game clock, field position, and time of possession.

Can the Beavers dam up the Bronco offense enough to win? I’m not too sure this game will tell much about either team.

Will any ACC team win against someone other than one of their own weak sisters? Clemson looks to be the class of the conference right now.

1) Gotta wonder what could be so bad to make a promising young athlete commit such an act. Kid had his whole life ahead of him. Heart goes out to his loved ones.

2) Wonder if Keenum will take a medical redshirt? I don’t know how high NFL scouts are on him.

3) Color me concerned about Trent getting injured returning kicks, and I don’t care for Julio returning punts either. BJ Scott was a standout punt returner in high school and is getting limited playing time on D. Let him return punts and Eddie Lacy return kicks.

4) Florida better watch out, I think. Kentucky will be looking at this as a season-maker for them.

5) Meh.

Good call on Urban. I personally don’t like the man and made that point several times Saturday during the game. But there’s no question that he changed the game in his favor with that one call. And I’d be the first to call it lucky if he hadn’t succeeded in doing it 8 out of 8 times. That plus the return yards on special teams has led the league for 5 yrs.

Still don’t like him. But you have to give him his props.

Zebra, you need to chill a little and take a look at the facts…
GT vs UGA has had many streaks by both teams, the longest by GT with 8
UGA has more overall victories in the series (39 -60 -5),
Vandy is rally UGA’s favorite patsy

Now that being said, why don’t you get back to the drive up window and take another order before the boss catches you playing on his computer.

BAMA dude

Why do UGA and GT fans constantly fill these boards with smack talk? Especially THIS year when both are JV teams? It makes it difficult for college football fans to have lively discussion about issues and teams that matter in the sport. The rest of the country knows that UGA is better athletically and GT is better academically. Both sides want to dispute the merits of that argument, but it doesn’t change the perceptions which are largely based on fact. Give it a rest.

UGA VII, no you don’t. A one-loss ACC team won’t get into the BCSCG any time soon. Obviously not the case in the SEC. Better to be in the SEC and put a good run together.

Sean I agree. Kentucky has been under the radar because other than Louisville they haven’t played anyone. But I have been saying before the season that they were either a dark-horse for the East or will cause someone else not to win it. Very talented team as UGA fans well know.

We find out just how vulnerable their defensive secondary really is.

G8R Grad, this will be a tough game on the defense. Still don’t think Arky has much of a chance though. As explosive as their offense can be, ours is moreso and much deeper. On the defensive side, we are hands down better than they are even with our young secondary.

I guess the bottom line is that our defense matches up with their offense a whole lot better than their defense will match up with our offense.

USCe will win the east. This week they will continue to impress. Gators don’t have it. Dawgs don’t have it. The Vols can’t even see it it’s so far away.
That leaves the Ole Ball Coach and a strong supporting cast in every faze of the game.

Either way, Bama crushes the victor of east.
