Georgia and Georgia Tech win because they GOTTA win

The Fearless Friday Forecast:

1. Georgia Tech at North Carolina: There is no nice way to say it. Last week at Kansas was a bad loss for the men of The Institute. But there is a sense of urgency at Georgia Tech as it prepares to go to Chapel Hill because every game in tightly-bunched Coastal Division will be crucial. There is also a sense of frustration at North Carolina as a promising season may soon start to unravel if the Tar Heels don’t win this one. If the Tar Heels had all of their talented defenders, I’d be tempted to go with the home team. Barring some last minute announcement on Friday or Saturday, those seven defensive starters won’t be there for this game. I’m going with the Jackets. Georgia Tech 28, North Carolina 21.

2. Arkansas at Georgia: There isn’t a whole lot of positive energy coming out of Athens today. The Bulldogs got manhandled on both lines of scrimmage at South Carolina. The offensive line couldn’t run block and the defense could not tackle. My friend Lee Corso says two of the greatest motivators in college football are Urgency and need for Redemption. Georgia is feeling a lot of both right now. Georgia 31, Arkansas 21.

3. Florida at Tennessee: Florida’s offense was awful in the first game against Miami of Ohio. It got a little better last week against USF. The Gators are just too talented not to get better and will take another step forward in Knoxville, where the reality of Tennessee’s situation set in during the second half against Oregon last week. Derek Dooley called out his team for not competing once they fell behind to the Ducks. Let’s see how the Volunteers respond this week when they face more adversity. Florida 35, Tennessee 17.

4. Clemson at Auburn: After scoring only 17 points last week against Mississippi State why do I get the feeling that Auburn is going to put together a very complete game at home? We didn’t learn a lot about Clemson in wins over North Texas and Presbyterian. But I just don’t think Dabo Swinney’s bunch can match the offensive firepower that Auburn will have. Auburn 31, Clemson 21.

5. Miss. State at LSU: LSU beat North Carolina in Atlanta and then went to Vanderbilt and won pretty easily. Now the Tigers get three straight home games (Mississippi State, West Virginia, Tennessee) before going to Florida on Oct. 9. I’m watching this game to see if backup quarterback Jarrett Lee gets a chance to jump start an anemic offense. Regardless, LSU wins at home. LSU 24, Mississippi State 10.

6. Vanderbilt at Ole Miss: Jeremiah Masoli will get the start at quarterback and will run an offense that is going to get better each week. The same cannot be said about the Vanderbilt offense. Ole Miss gets three straight home games before going to Alabama on Oct. 16. Ole Miss 27, Vanderbilt 10.

7. Alabama at Duke:  Lot of history here. Duke coach David Cutcliffe went to Alabama and was once a graduate assistant to Bear Bryant. Wallace Wade, for whom Duke’s stadium is named, won three national championships at Alabama before leaving for Duke in 1931. Wallace Wade Stadium will add 3,900 temporary seats just to get to about 38,000. The only question is how long Nick Saban will go with his starters because a big trip to Arkansas is coming  up next week. Alabama 42, Duke 10.

8. BYU at Florida State: Hopefully Florida State has forgotten what an awful performance it had at Oklahoma last week. BYU, which is leaving the Mountain West to become an Independent after this season, got its fans excited with a win over Washington in week one. But last week the Cougars got steamrolled, giving up 409 yards rushing to Air Force in a 35-14 loss. Florida State will do the same. Florida State 35, BYU 10.

9. Notre Dame at Michigan State: After two easy wins over Western Michigan and Florida Atlantic, Michigan State finally gets a test against the Irish, who lost to Michigan on a late touchdown last week. Traditionally, Michigan State has had trouble with the spread offense under  Mark Dantonio and Brian Kelly, the new Notre Dame coach, is a spread guru. Notre Dame came close to getting its first significant win under Kelly last week. Saturday the Irish get it done. Notre Dame 21, Michigan State 20.

10. Jacksonville at Georgia State: Jacksonville State is 2-0 after a huge upset at Ole Miss (49-48 OT) on Sept. 4 and then a 21-17 win over Chattanooga. Jack Crowe’s Gamecocks simply have too many athletes for Georgia State.  But if Bill Curry’s Panthers are going to  play in the CAA down the road, this is the level of competition they must eventually match. It just won’t happen on Saturday. Jacksonville State 42, Georgia State 20.

Auburn cant be this good. They come back down to earth next weekend against South Carolina. Side note: what ever happened to Clemson? I have family that went there and they used think they were the big dog in that state for football. Looks like they’ve turned into South Carolina’s little stepchild. They can’t even come over here and compete against an average Auburn team.

“After scoring only 17 points last week against Mississippi State why do I get the feeling that Auburn is going to put together a very complete game at home?”

That’s a good question. They certainly didn’t put one together in Starkville. I also have a “feeling” that Auburn will win, but there is no empirical evidence, as yet, to support that feeling. This game will be interesting because little is known about how either of these teams will react to a contest with a quality opponent. If you think that Mississippi State is a quality opponent, then you should have picked them to defeat LSU.

I wouldn’t be knocking the burners yet they played poorly and still won on the road I think they will end up 9-3 this year. Before the season began I thought UGA would go 10-2 with losses to USCeast and the burners I still believe that as bad as we played last week floiduuh has played eually as bad against worse competition, USCeast has a tough schedule they play burners on the road and have bama and Arkansas at home as well as playing floriduh so if we get our act together and we will we have a good shot at 10-2 or 9-3 this is a good team and will only get better

How long will Notre Dame give Brian Kelly to turn this stagnant program around? All of the pre-season hype was that, while Charlie Weis was a dud as a HC, he had left the cupboard stocked with quality talent. Does Kelly need to recruit a “different style” of player for his offensive scheme to click? That has been Rich Rod’s excuse. Notre Dame hasn’t tasted a championship since 1988. Since then, no coach has lasted for more than four years.

Maybe a better question is: How long will the BCS bother to give Notre Dame a special dispensation to participate in the Championship game while ND gives no indication of the capacity to exercise that privilege?

Dawgs and Jackets are both in the same place this week, they need the new 3- 4 defense to actually show up and stop somebody. To date neither of us has demonstrated that the shift to the 3-4 is working.
Time is of the essence for TECH, but it is critical for DAWG; with another SEC loss UGA’s season is done and they become irrelevant, there will nothing left to play for except of course the last game on the schedule.

SEC! SEC! SEC! Those were the chants some of us Oregon fans got exiting Neyland Stadium Saturday night, after delivering one of the largest margin of defeats in Neyland’s history. Talk about a delusional fans base.

For the most part, folks in Knoxville were very friendly and the hospitality was alright. All I heard though from the Wednesday afternoon upon my arrival to kickoff was, “this is SEC, we play defense!”, “hey man, you are not that fast, wait ‘til you see SEC speed!”. LOL. I get that UT is down, and not what it was in the late 90’s with Fullmer’s powerful squads. But, UT is no Jacksonville State (sorry Ole Miss), they still have some highly recruited kids and from my 30yd line 10th row seats behind UT’s bench (thank you StubHub), Tennessee still has plenty of good athletes.

Our 20,000 Oregon faithful that congregated on sacred SEC soil enjoyed ourselves, and we are looking forward to a date in Dallas at Jerry’s palace next year in early September vs. LSU.

I can’t speak for the rest of the Pac-10, but we, as in THE OREGON DUCKS, play defense, have just as good as team speed as anyone in the country, and can explode for huge chunks of yards and points against anyone, yes, even you the Cleveland Browns and Detroit Lions.

The other teams will see things similarly as well…Florida at UT may be dubbed The Longest Yard Bowl this year. Simms is sorta, kinda adequate compared to Brantley’s expectations but that’s where it ends in QB comparisons. Florida has has a way of coming out in the second half and going to work after a 30 minute coffe break. I could break down the reasons why the Vols can’t win this game but that’ll bore the he#% out of y’all. Florida should beat the Vols but I’ll not give in. UT 20-UF 19…

There is no way the Dawgs score 31 points. I don’t care if they are at home.

It doesn’t look any better for my beloved Jackets. It will take more than luck to come out of Chapel Hill with a win. It will take tackling and some sort of a passing game.

I think UGA and TECH have the same problem on defense. Both are in a new scheme and don’t really know what to do. Also, neither has a huge nose guard to clog up the middle and force a double team on most every play. All of the down linemen at 290 are undersized.

We’ll see what happens when everyone lines up and plays.

****GO BACK AND RE-READ MY POST*****

I specifically said, I get that UT is down. My post was an attempt to show the satirical comedy of us getting heckled as we walked out of the stadium after giving a real @ss whooping. NO OREGON FAN WILL BE BRAGGING ABOUT BEATING A 4-6 WIN VOL TEAM, trust me on that one. We’ve got bigger fish to fry.

I give props and always have to the South Eastern Conference for the recent run of consecutive national championships, quite unprecedented and impressive. I’m not some kool-aid drunk Pac-10 fan that is delusional and thinks the Pac-10’s fervor for college football matches the entire body of the SEC. The point of the post was don’t sleep on Oregon, because as one long time UT Football season ticket holder who lives in Atlanta, told me, “well, you Oregon boys might as well be called the SEC school of the west.”

Oregon’s got one rabid fans base, a blue collar bunch that travel well, plays an exciting brand of football, and is no chump squad. The 2010 Oregon Football team is a solid crew, and could compete with anyone. That’s no shot at anyone in the sun belt, just a notation to take notice outside the warmer states because some other schools are playing some dam good football too.

Tony, I ain’t buying the fact that Bobo can out gameplan any SEC DC anymore. There’s no doubt we have some weapons, but Bobo cannot get the ball in their hands enough for them to make a difference. No way our offense scores 31.

Our hopes of winning lie with Grantham’s D and special teams. If Smith or Boykin can get a couple of big returns, and the D gets a couple of picks, and gives Murray a short field, we may can punch a TD in, but Richt will once again rely on FGs.

If the D plays, we may can squeeze out a 15-14 victory.

Great logic, Tony. The home state teams are going to win because they GOTTA win. Having to win doesn’t help you block and tackle better if you’re UGA. Tennessee has to win, also, but you’re not picking them. Miss. St. has to win to avoid going 0-2 in their own division, but you’re not picking them. But, UGA–they really gotta win–so you’re picking them. OK.

JWalker-

South Carolina’s win against Clemson last season was their second in the last ten years. They haven’t beaten Clemson in back-to-back seasons in about 40 years, and you shouldn’t expect that to change this season. Simply stated, they haven’t dominated anything.

Any notion that South Carolina is the better team is only held by those in Columbia and a limited, uneducated few that blindly cheer for the SEC.

We should have some good games this weekend. If the UF-UT Game is close in the 4th quarter, I believe the VOLS will win it because they are hungry for some success. Otherwise, it will be a blowout. I am not buying in to Dooley yet simply because he has shown nothing in his coaching career to date.
I find it hilarius in how the DAWG Fans deem Grantham as such a genius defensive mind. Many of us never heard of him until Coach Richt hired him. Additionally, last year, the DAWG Fans were foam at the mouth to get either of their 2 alums as the Defensive Coordinator – Will Muschamp or Kirby Smart. They would have been a much better hire than Grantham but they spurned UGA for personal reasons. Muschamp and Smart will both be successful SEC Head Coaches dome day. Perhaps one will eventually relieve Richt. They are young gugs being mentored by exceptionally good head coaches. Thus far, the DAWGS have struck out on Muschamp and Smart which says a lot about the UGA Program.

Go Gators!

The Ducks, IMO, are the best of the PAC 10… with team speed similar to SEC team leaders. They could very well end up in the MNC Game, but I don’t think it will be against LSU (judging by their 1st 2 games anyway). Speaking of speed, I thought USC was slower than Virginia when I watched them last week… perhaps even Hawaii the week before on some plays. So they will be toast against the Ducks.

The only way I see the dawgs winning tomorrow is with about 3 TOs, and 2 run in for scores. I am counting on that. Mallett will be pressured into errors, and Murray will play lights out – throwing to TEs for a change. Go Dawgs! YOU CAN DOooooo IT!

Fellas,

First off- scheduling is done 5-10 years out as you know. When we put UT up on the schedule, they were still under the old regime and Lane Kiffin was still working at Pizza Hut, delivering pies in his Firebird. We’ve got Georgia on the schedule for a home/away series, and now a quickie season opener neutral site with LSU. Tennessee will come to Eugene in two years.

My other point is that Oregon has tried FOREVER to schedule home/away series with the Gators, ‘Bama, LSU, amongst others. Nobody will come back to Eugene and play at Autzen. Every school has their own theory on out of conference scheduling, and I’m not here to debate that, I’m simply saying it’s not like this summer we said, “hey UT is down, let’s go play them and get on the first plane back to the west coast before we have to go play in Tuscaloosa.”

As far as the uniforms, ok, I’ll give you that, we sold our soul to NIKE a long time ago. BUT, WITH THAT SAID…. It’s all FREE. Meaning, come on out to our facilities in Eugene. Why do NFL scouts call Oregon’s facilities better than most NFL teams (ESPN Insider article by Mel Kipper pre-draft, I think around Feb or March ’09)? So while every now and then we have to put up with some just eye gouging awful uniforms, not often, but yes sometimes, we’ve been fortunate that a lot of NIKE upper brass are Oregon grads or close to the program, not just the man Phil Knight being a former UO athlete and alum.

This is a less experienced team on defense than the last few years; couple that with obvious limits caused by this style of offense, you get an average football team in a now proven WEAK conference. No offense, but as long as you have little in the way of passing schemes necessary to move the ball in critical third and/or long situations, and you have a QB who cannot throw, never has been able to throw and never will be able to throw, this is what you are left with.

A younger kid, no more than 16, explained to me the history of Tennessee getting its name, ‘The Volunteers’, in an incredible amount of depth- I was pretty dam impressed. So yes, Ducks does not have that scary mascot, I agree with you there. But when you grow up with it, and it’s in your blood, you love it. When we won the national championship in basketball, early 20th century, we were called the “Tall Firs”. Once again, not a real ferocious presence.

Last week wasn’t too bad, but I whiffed on thinking the ACC and UGA play football…

Hawgs at Dawgs: Arkansas faces a rabid and angry UGA team in Athens. I do think UGA matches up better against a passing team than they do a running team, and thus I think they may play a little better against Arkansas. That said, USC laid out the blueprint on how to beat Georgia last week. So Petrino may just come out and challenge Georgia like USC did. I would. Apparently vegas has the dawgs favored in this one. (Really!?) I think UGA wins because the match up well, and the pretty much have to.

Florida at UT: Last week after I quit mourning over the UGA loss, we watched a movie. Well before we watched the movie I checked out the UT/Oregon game. UT was up something like 13-3. I thought “hey, look at that”. Then we watched a movie. Then I turned back on the game and it was 40somethin – 13 Oregon. Again I thought “hey, look at that”. That was pretty much all I needed to know….. Gators haven’t looked great, but they probably will in this one. Even if it takes a quater or two to weed through UT’d depth.

Clemson at Auburn: An ACC team vs. a higher ranked SEC team….at the SEC team’s stadium. This one is a no brainer. If Clemson wins, they’ll probably make a Disney movie out of it.

Miss St at LSU: LSU is either very vulnerable or they have brilliantly been sandbagging. I don’t really place brilliant and Les Miles into the same category. Here is your upset, I think cow bells ring. MSU wins and overcomes their horrific QB skills. (Could you imagine if Masoli would of went to MSU instead?)

Bama at Duke: Puhhlease. The biggest headline on this one is how many carries they are going to let Ingram carry.

Tech at North Carolina: I think the Tarheels pull this one out, although I’m still not sure how many people they have playing for them. Still, they should have enough of a D to properly defend Tech’s option attack. Besides, until Tech finds something of a passing game it’s going to be a tough road for them.

Vandy at Ole Miss: The worst team in the west plays the worst team in the east. I guess the west wins.

BYU at FSU: Both of these teams got rolled over last week. But only one of them got rolled over by Air Force. FSU wins at home.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Tony, I think your local mentality clouds your picks. Sorry have to pick local teams to lose. UNC is good last time I watched them and Tech was bad.

About UGA, here is 3 reasons they will lose:

1. AR is ranked 12 and UGA is ranked 26, more than twice as high. The AP people must know something, right?
2. Bobo is too predictable as complained by lots of fans, so a bad AR defense should be good enough to handle UGA offense.
3. Early in the game, UGA coaches will let loose Arron Murray as demanded by UGA fans, the fresh man QB throws more interruption than touchdown as a result, and reception is too low to mount any threat. And in the 2nd quarter, UGA decides to run the ball, but too late.

I predicted South Carolina would play in the SECCG v. Bama this season. They are legit. No surprise we got beat there but we just played so soft it is concerning.

Dogs go 4-8 or 5-7 this season and rebound with a nice ‘11 campaign.

History repeats itself. LSU was 3-8 with DiNardo and then went onto to do great things. Bama struggled and now is top dog again. Auburn struggled then went undefeated.

Georgia has never gone throught hat phase but I believe it is finally upon us. Sometimes you just have to be “bad” before you can be “good” again.

Gator Mike, I like your opinon on the UT-Gator game… but I have to ask you about your comments on Granthem. My fellow Dawg fans say alot of things on this blog, but I don’t recall ANYONE calling CTG a “defensive genius.” As a matter of fact, I don’t really think the Dawg fans would care if he was. What all of us are excited about is how much of a positive effect he is having on our defense, tackling aside. The fact that the Sanford crowd broke into appaulse when CTG was ripping Rambo a new backside for costing us a shutout against La-La speaks volumes. We havn’t seen that since Van Gorder. And given how those years worked out, it has us licking our chops with posibilities.

I don’t have visions of grandeur for this year. With a red-shirt QB and a new defensive coordinator and scheme, there are bound to be bumps (aka losses) this year. However, at this point, I am looking for proof that we are moving in the right direction. IMO, we are moving in the right direction defensivly. I am withholding my opinon on the offense until after the Arkanasas game. CMB has a lot of questions to answer…

BAMA’s current OOC strategy is to play:

1. Games in areas in which Saban wants to recruit (i.e. Chick-fil-A game in Atlanta and attempts to play in the Jerry Dome in Dallas)

2. Traditional opponents the old school fans remember (e.g. Penn State and attempts to schedule Notre Dame)

Unfortunately, Oregon does not satisfy either of these requirements. Hopefully, we play you guys in the BCSCG.

5….The “other” bulldogs win this one in an upset. Miles get ticked off in his post-game press conference about anyone doubting his “damn fine football team”. Then he runs out because the seat of his pants catch on fire from the heat!

Auburn handles it’s SC-twin with ease. Cam Newton gives DC’s fits and the game’s at home. I love the comments about Auburn’s “horrid defense” – yeah, compared to Auburn in the the mid-00’s, EVERYONE’S defense is horrid. Our secondary would have gotten burned like a witch in Salem last week if the MSU receivers actually had working hands, so sure… we lucked out at the end there. But the D-line?? Two words – Nick Fairley.

I pick UGA over Arky because not only should the Dawgs be starving for a win, but it should be Petrino’s destiny to never beat a team from GA again. He has no class and Richt should punish him mercilessly on principle alone.

Tech… I really hope the Jackets got a wake up call last week, but my gut feeling is a UNC win here.

GSU vs. Jax St – JSUs got more experience and more weapons, but come on down to the Dome and support the new guys in town. We’ve got beer inside and every seat’s a good seat.

I think both GA schools have a good shot at winning, but both will struggle in doing so. Both games could go either way imo. And while we won’t have any problems with Dook, I think the vanilla defense you’ll see from Saban will expose the young secondary enough for them to put a few more than 10 up. ARD – when you’re playing a good team, mistakes typically = points…look at Oregon:
Mistake – Missed tackle – 6 pts
Mistake – interception – 6 pts

Defense may win championships in the SEC, but poor offense loses games. UGA still needs to score more points than Ark, and it’s yet to be proven that can happen against good opponents. It’s not enough to play a weak defense. They still have to make the plays. I’m pulling for the offense to show why they were so highly touted. We’ll see just how desperate the coaches and players are to win.

AP doesn’t pick winners, but it’s an upset when a lower ranked team beat a higher ranked team. If a Vegas picked winner loses, it can be called upset too. In that sense, I am not sure it’s AP or Vegas that has a better record.

UGA has another lousy season, the alumni wil not ………..I repeat ….we will not allow this. I can easily see CMR taking a walk by resigning at season’s end to “purse his missionary work.” Todd Grantham will be asked by the new coach to stay and they will keep his two new assistants …….Lakatos and Blevins. They are solid and need another year to recruit and install their system. Now, if that too is a complete failure by December …………then the new coach can decide.

Bobo and all the rest O coaches will leave ……………and not be retained by the new man.

Folks ……………this is big boy ball and it IS about money. UGA will not tolerate yet another lousy year ………….ESPECIALLY WITH all of the thuggery up there.

UGA needs at least a 10-2 or 9-3 year with a breakthroug win over Florida. Sorry ………..that HAS to be in Richt’s resume for this year. He knows it too.

Beast and Gator Mike, you have to understand where we are coming from regarding the hiring of Grantham. Sure he teaches clinics at Bama with his friend Nick Saban. Sure he was DC in Cleveland (where BTW if you are hired there you rent an apartment and keep your sh!t in the boxes in storage, no matter who you are). We have had W Martinez for three years with a decline every season in D production. How many did we score against Arky last year and SC last year? And still had to punch the ticket for the W at the last minute. It looked more like ACC football than SEC. Grantham was also a successful D lineman coach in the NFL for years, J Jones wouldn’t have let him on the staff if he didn’t think otherwise. Anyhoo, we were happy with the hire, (Smart and Muschamp won’t leave there respective positions, which are some of the best in CFB, except for the right HC position). Is Grantham good? As you say jury is still out but it looks promising so far. I just hope our pass D shows up this weekend.

The one thing that kills be about this weekend is that Arky RB that suffered the bowel injury? WTF is up with that?

Yeah, WonderDawg, I agree. While it has been fun in years past to watch the more delusional end of the UGA fanbase flip out ofter their MNC dreams were vanquished, I have actually spent this week trying to convince my UGA friends to step back off the ledge a bit. USCe may very well end up playing us in the Dome- frankly I’m concerned about our trip to Columbia coming up- and UGA will still get nine wins or so and a decent bowl. LSU looks just OK, UK, UT, and vandy are a joke, and Auburn vs. Missy St. looked like something from the Big East. It wouldn’t surprise me one bit to see UGA end up 6-2 in conference play and get the #4 SEC bowl bid behind Bama, USCe, and UF.

ARdawg,
I don’t take much stock in the 55 hung on La-La. I mean, who couldn’t do that? UF has scored 34 in consecutive weeks, but we all know it was against inferior opponents and they struggled doing it. IF they open it up then they have a shot against Arkansas. I wouldn’t want UF to be playing them right now and have to get into a shootout. UGA needs to play physical up front, stuff the run and put consitent pressure on Mallett if they want to keep the score down. Otherwise, I’m afraid it could be a long day. I’m pulling for you guys mainly because I hate Petrino and want to see a UGA team with a good record when we face ya’ll in Jax.
Best of luck tomorrow!

TS

Arky will have to beat Georgia through the air which bodes well for the Dawgs from what I’ve seen so far this year. GA’s d line has to penetrate and keep Mallett on the move every play and not be in “prevent” mode the entire game.

If the Gators come out and play offense like we saw the 2nd half against USF we should put up a lot of points. Our defense will keep us in a lot of games this year but we have to back that up with some production from the offense. Someone has to step up and be the #2 behind Demps. I think Debose will be that guy.

at 5IML and ‘Beast From The East’ :

Well, I do understand from a recruiting standpoint that taking Alabama all the way up to Oregon to play at Autzen is as good as voting republican in San Francisco or NYC; it’s pointless. With that said, it sure would be fun to get the Tide in Autzen. I’m actually excited to watch them line up against the Dukies tomorrow, living here in DC, we’ll get it on TV in HD. I want to see how Duke reacts in the 1st qt, and see if they come with any punch. ‘Bama will smoke them, but still, it’s an intriguing intersectional game. In terms of playing a traditional opponent, like Penn State, Notre Dame, USC, ect…. I understand that. I’m not going to sit and try and argue the historical importance of Oregon Football. We have as much history as a 16 year old kid, not much. Early 1990s Oregon Football hit some big bowl games and began to build something special; before that? Well, it was hit and miss but mostly miss. Nevertheless, the Oregon Ducks are a huge hit for TV Ratings, just ask ESPN’s Game Day why in the past 4 years they’ve been to Eugene four times, and in one year twice. People like watching what wacky uniforms will be worn, and the product on the field is entertaining. We win games, we just don’t wear new NIKE digs every game and it’s not all fluff, we’ve got some defensive muscle and we’ll pop anyone (or as we say, “Don’t make us BLOUNT you”).

Getting Tennessee and Georgia in Eugene will be fun in the next few years. I personally enjoy road games much more, new stadiums, new traditions, new bars/downtowns to take over, and I know Athens is circled on many Oregon faithful calendars. The Knoxville paper estimated 20,000 Oregon fans made the trip. I bet if UT is up at the caliber they were when we inked the home/away deal, not so many UT fans sell their tickets to rabid U of O fans.

You idiots that are blaming the new scheme for UGA’s defensive woes need to pay attention more. Tackling is nothing specific to this new scheme. Lattimore was breaking tackles right and left, which means the defenders were where they were supposed to be. Tackling is not something that changes with schemes.

@ VolAlum…. That was not a shot at anyone in Knoxville. We loved our trip out there to Tennessee. A bunch of NYC/DC Oregon alums got 2 houseboats, and formed the Oregon Navy against the UT Navy, we had a blast. I have nothing but absolute respect for that program, it’s rich tradition, and the sheer volume of Neyland. Early on when UT took the lead, holy $%#@, that place was rocking. We were a few rows behind the UT bench, and damn, that place was shaking. I’d expect nothing less. Now, I want a slew of orange crush to invade the sleepy Pacific Northwest and visit Autzen and the jet engine that the zoo creates on fall Saturdays. UT will be back, Dooley may be the guy, I’m not sure, but make no mistake, that’s one hell of a stadium with some great traditions.

@ gdawginkalamazoo… well, you’ll find divided camps amongst Oregon fans on their feelings regarding Masoli. You will find a chunk that wish him well, and recognize that he’s a young kid that can’t keep his hand out of the cookie jar and just finds trouble. He was a class act before January in Eugene and never really got into trouble; he was never a distraction. Those same fans have now become Ole Miss fans and want to see the Rebels make some noise in the SEC. Eugene and Portland Comcast/Direct TV recently reported the number of requests to get SEC Football packages has increased 100 fold, with Duck fans wanting to watch Nutt’s Rebels and see what Masoli can do.

On the other end of the spectrum, you’ll find an angry group of Duck fans pissed at “What could have been.” With Masoli, Oregon enters 2010 as a Top 5 team with legitimate national championship aspirations. Masoli has led Oregon to some big wins, in some hostile environments, and has shown the moxy to get a team to the Rose Bowl. He ran the spread option, our run emphasized version, to perfection like Mozart composing a musical piece- it was a thing of beauty.

My thoughts as an avid fan who travels to ½ a dozen games from the east coast, good ridens. Seriously, he was in trouble before Oregon and we don’t let many kids like that through our doors. He was given STERN WARNINGS before inking his scholarship. He couldn’t stay out of trouble, even with his name in the dark horse Heisman conversation going into 2010. We never kicked him to the curb, he was allowed to obtain a world class education that many in the world don’t ever have the chance to acquire.

Oregon lost to Boise State and Ohio State in 2009 because MASOLI DOES NOT HAVE THE ABILITY TO CONSISTENTLY STRETCH DEFENSES VERTICALLY DOWN THE FIELD. He plays in a 15 yard box, and teams with equal or superior line of scrimmage play (opposing defensive front sevens) can simply stack the box and snuff out most big plays. We beat Ohio State is we can throw the football with any consistently. Masoli has a very erratic arm. Good runner? Of course, no doubt. Not a championship caliber throwing QB though, that’s why I’m glad we now have prep All-American out of Houston, TX Darron Thomas, redshirt Sophomore who’s been in the program for 3 years.

DawginLex, I thought D Gamble played a hell of a game last week that kid was all over the field on special teams and defense. Our entire defense didn’t quit last week. For the amount of the time that they spent on the field I though they hung tough. Sure there should be no excuse for taking a play off at anytime. The UGA game plan last week was a joke. The UGA coaches saw Aaron Murray in HS and they decied to recruit him …………what they saw was a HS QB that played like he did vs LSU-Lafayette. Then, came SC game and they throttled him. DUMB ………we lost. Murray had three opps to bolt and AT LEAST GET A FIRST DOWN ……….we punted or whatever. Told not to run. DUMB.

This week, if Murray see his boys covered he will have to bolt, try and move the chains, sustaining the drive, giving the Hogs something else to think about …………otherwise, if we play like last week, we lose badly gang.

Re: Alabama’s arrest record, below is an interesting read. Talks about how we had 10 arrests in a 12 month period and what Saban did about it.

http://blog.al.com/kevin-scarbinsky/2009/05/scarbinsky_tides_arrest_record.html

Excerpt:
Some of the things he’s done in two years at Alabama — like starting a Peer Intervention Group of players and bringing in the Pacific Institute to teach classes on behavior — have started to help.

Just as 12-0 can spiral into 12-2, things can go wrong in a hurry, and the Alabama players aren’t perfect. Rolando McLain did get involved in a skirmish at a frat party last season, and Andre Smith did get suspended from the Sugar Bowl.

But Alabama has stopped making the kind of headlines that make a head coach pull his hair out.

“It’s getting better and better,” Saban said, ”but it all goes back to the quality of person on your team. We have a lot of good people, and we have a lot of guys who’ve developed and become better people.

”They’re in a better position now to graduate. They’re in a better position to be more successful in life. Ultimately, that’s the goal.”

Saban’s behavioral modification measures seemed like nonsense to some outsiders after they were introduced.

Have none of these boneheads considered the fact that their 2009 schedule happened to pit Arkansas against Alabama, Texas A&M, Florida, Ole Miss and LSU on the road?

Home field advantage has more to do with scheduling patsy games at home than with anything else. All football fields are laid out in the same dimensions. With the exception of Boise State, they’re all basically the same color. The fans don’t play the game. Stop the insanity!

DawginLex, you’re on the right track there. I think there’s a good chance UGA outscores Arky, but they won’t be putting up 35-40 points like some here seem to believe. I’m not big on the whole prediction thing but at home I’d pick UGA to win 24-20 or something along those lines.

And Coach O, if you can’t understand that football teams (defenses especially) feed off the home crowd energy then you never played much football. It’s much harder to play QB in a hostile environment when a) the opposing fans are doing everything they can to keep you from hearing and communicating with your teammates on audibles and b) the defense has that little extra pep in their step from feeding off the home crowd. When you’re at home and have the ball you tend to get a nice, comfortable atmosphere as a QB… check off when you want, etc. without crowd noise becoming an issue. Some guys just get rattled on the road.

I understand what “home field advantage” is — but I also understand what it isn’t.

Mallet’s home field numbers from last year are so much better because he played against so many quality opponents in road games. Does the cheering crowd help? Sure — but not that much.

Personally, I think those talking about Mallet’s home/road performance are talking more in terms of poor play and critical mistakes that he may have made in hostile environments last year. Example would be his 16-for-41 performance at BDS last year. I don’t think people are looking at home numbers he piled up against patsies.

Chief, say what you want… Auburn is average at best this year and Cam Newton is NOT a great QB. He never would have been anything more than the Tebow version of the Chris Leak Florida offense. @Chief Knockahoma

I do appreciate an ardent fan. Auburn might well be a very good team this year, but they haven’t yet proved that they are. They won both of their games so far — true enough. But they haven’t played a proven quality opponent, nor have they established a long winning streak.

Their defense gave up too much in yardage and points in the opener to what should have been an inferior opponent. The offense made some big plays, but they were inconsistent. Against MS State, they only had one sustained offensive drive — on the opening kickoff. All of the rest of the points came from turnovers. Auburn also gave up some turnovers in that game. We don’t really know how good MS State is yet, so it’s hard to tell whether Auburn should have come so close to losing that game. It did come right down to the wire.

You’re right that teams have up and down weeks and we might not have yet seen Auburn’s best game. They have a shot at presenting some evidence tomorrow evening.

I predict that the Dawgs will win in a close one tomorrow, 24-17. The Dawgs will bounce back from the poor offensive showing of last week. The D will overcome the tackling issue and get it done. I am encouraged by the D considering the 24 total points allowed thus far in the season. This is not a terrible/bad/mediocre team by any stretch. The talent is there, it just has to be coached up and issues have to be addressed and worked on after each game. Grantham has already made great strides, my main concern is Bobo. I prefer that Richt take over the play calling but that’s not likely to happen. Take the reigns off of Murray and let him play his style of QB. Go Dawgs!

UGA does not have the type of men that are able to “man up” as a team. They are lacking in the core ingredient ……….mental toughness like a Tommy Thurson had at UGA.

UGA lost H Walker and went like 9-1 and faced # 1 Texas in the Cotton Bowl back in the early 80s. We lost Walker who was far, far, far more impactful than AJ would ever have been ………ever.

UGA played D and handled Texas in the then BIG BOY Cotton Bowl in a D struggle ………..they played like men.

UGA that year ended up # 4 without Walker on the final poll.

I am sick of this whining about some selffish punk that will not be remembered as well as Jimmy Shirah is or Jimmy Polus is or Glenn Harrsion is or Edgar Chandler or a Royce Smith is. How about a Bill Krugg or a Jeff Sanchez or a Scott Woerner or a Jimmy Payne?? Men all.
