Is this going to be 2004 all over again?

Nobody asked me but:

1. I know it’s early, but it’s starting to look like 2004 again: Remember 2004? Well Auburn sure does. That was the year that USC and Oklahoma started 1-2 in the polls and never lost. Auburn started at No. 17, got to be No. 2 for a week, but in the end it was USC and Oklahoma playing for the championship with Auburn playing the odd man out.

Have you looked at the gap between Alabama, Ohio State, and everybody else in the coaches poll? Alabama got 55 first-place votes after its impressive win over Penn State. Ohio State handled Miami easily and got the other four first-place votes. There are 132 points between No. 2 Ohio State and No. 3 Boise State. That is a very wide gap.

Here is the point: If Alabama and Ohio State win out, I don’t think anybody, including Boise, cracks the top two.

Again, I know it’s early.  It’s just something to think about.

2. It’s time for LSU to bring back Jarrett Lee: I like Jordan Jefferson. He’s a nice kid with good athletic ability. But the fact is that LSU is not going to go where it needs to go with him at quarterback. Jefferson completed only eight of 20 passes for 96 yards and no touchdowns in last Saturday’s win over Vanderbilt. Even Les Miles, who has been very patient with Jefferson, knows he has to get more from his quarterback if the Tigers are going to think about competing  for the SEC West title. Miles said the coaches would evaluate the quarterback position this week. “Frankly we’re going to expect more out of the position, period,” he said.  By Tuesday he had sort of backed away from that statement. Jefferson is his guy–for now.

Lee had a nightmare of a season in 2008 when he had six interceptions returned for touchdowns and 16 interceptions total. But the fact is the kid has a good arm and just needs help rebuilding his confidence. That is what coaches are for. Lee needs to see the field Saturday against Mississippi State.

3. Florida just needs to get the ball to No. 2: Florida may have found its offensive identity post-Tim Tebow in last week’s win over South Florida. Jeff Demps averaged 12.6 yards every time he touched the ball against the Bulls and had 255 all-purpose yards. Florida had 251 yards rushing and 172 passing. Rather than ask John Brantley to throw it all over the ballpark, the Gators probably just need to get the ball to Demps a whole lot.

You have to get the ball to Demps because it looks like Chris Rainey is not going to be around. Rainey was arrested on felony stalking charges early Tuesday morning. According to arrest records, Rainey texted the message “Time to Die” to a female who he has been dating, according to reports in the Gainesville Sun and the Orlando Sentinel. That arrest report is a matter of public record.

I’m going to see how this plays out and so I’m only going to say this:

IF the arrest record is completely accurate and Rainey did send that message to the female, regardless of their relationship, he should be done as a college football player. Period. If I’m the father of that girl, and some harm comes to my daughter because this is not handled properly, I will soon own a big chunk of the University of Florida. I have zero tolerance for men threatening women. And if some yahoo calls to harrass and intimidate the woman because he’s worried about his precious football team, then that person is going to be tracked down and prosecuted as well.

And I sure as hell don’t want to hear from Rainey’s lawyer, Huntley Johnson, Jr.,  who told the Orlando Sentinel : “I think he’s a hell of a nice young man and I assure you that he wold never hurt this woman.”

I hope you’ll understand, Mr. Johnson, if we’re not quite willing to take your word on that.

4. The 102 points scored in Wake Forest’s 54-48 win over Duke last Saturday in Winston-Salem was the SECOND highest total ever in an ACC game. The highest scoring ACC game ever came in 1981 when Clemson beat Wake Forest 82-24 in Death Valley. I was there.

That was Clemson’s national championship season. Al Groh, now the defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech, was the head coach at Wake Forest. What I remember was Clemson’s mascot, dressed in a Tiger suit, who would do pushups to match the home team’s points every time they scored. His name was Ricky Capps and as the score kept growing he was getting pretty gassed. When Clemson got to 76 points the Demon Deacon mascot of Wake Forest gave Capps a break and did the 76 for him. Capps did 435 pushups that day.

5. Kudos to Duke for keeping Bama game in Durham: After playing Duke at home in 2006, Alabama is returning the game this Saturday at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham, which seats 33,941. Duke had the option of moving the game to Charlotte and a 73,000 seat NFL Stadium. It would have been a nice payday because the place would have been full with Alabama fans. But Duke head coach David Cutliffe, a 1976 graduate of Alabama who was a graduate assistant to Bear Bryant, realized how important this game was to the building of his program. “Some things,” said Cutcliffe, “are more important than money.”

An extra 3,900 seats will be brought in for Saturday’s game. Alabama fans will get another nostalgia trip as Duke’s Stadium is named after the man who won three national championships as the Crimson Tide’s head coach from 1923-30. Wade left Alabama for Duke in 1931.

1…..You may be right about Bama going wire to wire. They’re pretty tough right now. Not sure about OSU. Do they have Iowa on their schedule? That would be the only Big 10 team that should be able to match up with them. Boise State does not deserve a shot. Period.
2…..Miles seem to be confused. Jefferson or Lee? What a choice!
3…..If this is true (and it should be pretty easy to confirm), then he’s outta there! No room for that kind of character on any team.
4…..They sure do “D” it up in the ACC, huh?
5…..They could play that game anywhere. It’s not going to change the outcome one bit. Shoulda took the paycheck to go along with the beating. At least you would have had something to show for it other than a black eye and a couple of busted ribs!

OSU hosts Penn State November 13. Then they go to Iowa on November 20. They finish with Meechigan in the shoe on November 27. These three games follow a long string of cupcakes. I wouldn’t take anything for granted with the Buckeyes this year.

Then again, Alabama’s schedule isn’t exactly a cakewalk.

Mr. College Football, your self-aggrandizement continues. First, it’s not important to your readers that you have zero tolerance for guys who threaten females. Second, why did you have to mention that you were at the 1981 Clemson-Wake Forest game? Was the point that it was the highest scoring ACC game ever, or was the point that you were there?

As my good friend Bear Bryant told me one day in 1979 when we were fishing, “Some people just love to drop names or self-promote.”

It’s hard for a Bama fan to see this Crimson Tide squad dropping a game. Then again, that’s what Gator fans thought when they hosted Ole Miss a couple of years back…

I would have no problem with Boise State making it to the Big Game. I don’t think that they could compete with either the Tide or the Buckeyes, should it happen. At least that would shut Tim Brando up for a year or so.

I knew Jefferson wouldn’t be any better after the spring game. If Miles doesn’t play Lee then it will cost him his job as they will be no better than 7-5 with JJ at quarterback. Tiger fans will not tolerate mediocrity this season.

If Rainey did send that text he should be dismissed from the team.

It’s been a long time since I have been to a 33,000 seat stadium. The only ones I can recall, except for Vandy’s which is a little larger, were in Oxford and Starkville years ago before they were enlarged. Winton-Salem should be a nice trip for Tide fans anyway.

Big difference between Auburn 2004 and Boise St 2010? Auburn was pedestrian in the years leading up to their undefeated season. Boise has been consistent. I think it’s time for SEC to come up with a transparent policy for player dismissal, that way, players would think twice before their out-of-mind behaviors.

I am not sure Chris Rainey is really a bad guy. Sometime young people do things without thinking of consequences, which lots of time they don’t really mean it. But what if the guy really mean it? that’s the million dollar question, a liability UF cannot bear.

But a transparent policy would be a good bar to set by SEC.

Tony, Tony, Tony – take a deep breath and settle down. Only 2 games have been played. There is a ton of football yet to be played. Alabama has a tough stretch coming with some well rested teams. Ohio State will stumble along the way. This season is starting the way all seasons do. In July the sportswriters and radio folk complain about early polls – then they dissect the prognosticators for weeks. Following that comes the outcry about playing the “little sisters of the poor games”. Following those games each team boasts about it’s win and potential for an undefeated season. Soon to come will be the tired complaints about the BCS, another lap around the early polls (when the first BCS rankings appear), upsets, coaches on the hot seat, complaints about coaches being fired – those who befriended the media (see B. Bowden), flies in the ointment, etc. Each year brings the same thing, the same drills, the same arguments. As I said earlier settle down and play the game that repeats itself each year.

Knuckleheads like Rainey seem to crawl out from rocks at many SEC schools, and I do not blame the coaches (that includes the coaches at UGA, UT, Carolina, etc.). Somehow many gifted athletes develop a sense of being bullet proof on many campuses in thinking they are above the law and common sense. I find it interesting how SEC fans bash Urban Meyer for the length of some suspensions he has doled out over the years, but the starting quarterback for Auburn (Cam Newton) was dismissed from the UF Football Team for receiving a stolen laptop then throwing it out the window into a dumpster when the police arrived at his apartment. I’m sure Coach Meyer would rather have him backing up John Brantley than a true Freshman. Seems like that punishment wasn’t too light, was it?

Sam Robards, Dawg Fan

September 15th, 2010

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: if Jim Tressel is going to win another NC at OSU, it’ll be this year. If they don’t win the NC, it’ll be because they either stubbed their toe along the way against either Iowa, PSU or a (thus far) improved Michigan squad or played an SEC squad in the BCSCG.

As for Boise, in this system, they don’t deserve a shot at the NC. They simply don’t have the schedule to warrant their inclusion. Besides, you did notice that their “marquee” (spelling?) win, Virginia Tech, just lost to an FCS SCHOOL (James Madison).

In fact, has anyone else notice that two big name FBS schools have lost to FCS competition this year? I smell a Georgia State upset of Alabama in November! :-D

As for Rainey, if it’s true, he should be out. I don’t care what his sleazy defense attourney says, there are some lines that you just shouldn’t cross. I think even Urban Meyer understands that and will take the correct steps should the police report prove to be accurate.

Gen Neyland. I don’t think Tennessee is exactly a good example of enforcing discipline. They only kicked one guy off the team after about six of them assaulted a cop. The only reason the one was kicked off was it was his second or third offense. No one else even missed a single practice. Bottom line is Dooley gives out a slap on the wrist for off-field physical violence and Richt suspends players for traffic violations.

re: Saban’s first three years.

Hats off to Saban. I wasn’t crazy about the hire when I first heard he was coming to Bama. I had lived and worked in south Florida for several years, and had heard stories about this driven ego maniac who was coaching the Dolphins.

The guy is an exceptional coach, but there are a couple of things to consider:

(a) Shula left him with a nucleus of very talented football players. The depth he needed wasn’t there in 2007, but talent and experience at key positions was.

(b) Many of Bama’s players weren’t willing to but into Saban’s program. That always happens with any coaching change. After those players exited the scene, and Saban added to the depth chart – after that you get 2009.

(c) Saban has an entirely different situation this year. The talent (and depth) is there, but experience at key (defensive) positions is lacking. How soon Bama can coach-up the new kids will determine how successful this season is. No one will know the answer to any of this for a few more weeks.

BTW – Chizik was dealt an entirely different hand at Auburn. He arrived with very little talent, and virtually no depth on the team. He and his staff have made huge strides in correcting both. The biggest problem that he faces, and that Saban didn’t face; Saban didn’t have to deal with Saban on the other side of the state.

Also UGA has a brand new DC and defensive scheme ( although the tackling sure looks the same as last year !!) Give the Dawgs a little time this year..they will beat Ark because the 3-4 will work better against Mallet than it did against Lattimore. re: What has luck to do with it?

Every successful football team has to have some luck along the way. The ‘92 Bama team struggled against So. Miss, and Tulane. Last year Bama could have easily lost 4 or 5. A blocked kick(s), or a questionable call can effect the outcome. Running the table is a very rare event. I think Bama has been able to pull it off five times in sixty years. I heard Bill Oliver say that getting a team’s “A” game every week will not happen. The trick is to survive when your team is playing at their “B minus” level.

I’m an Alabama grad and fan but worrying about what might happen at the end of the year after 2 games have been played is madness. I remember 2 years ago when the topic of conversation on these blogs among Georgia fans was the injustice of being dropped from #1 preseason to #3 after the first couple of games despite not losing because USC and Oklahoma had been more impressive. They didn’t spend much time worrying about the upcoming home game against Alabama which figured to be a walkover because they were too worried about finishing undefeated and being left out of the championship game.

Here’s Tony’s column on “what if this turns out to be another 2004?” from September, 2008:

http://www.ajc.com/blogs/content/shared-blogs/ajc/cfb/entries/2008/09/24/usc_oklahoma_ge.html

“I know it’s way too early to be thinking about this kind of stuff and that the odds are greatly against it. But what if No. 1 Southern Cal, No. 2 Oklahoma, and No. 3 Georgia all go undefeated?
Which team would be the odd man out for the BCS championship game?
It’s not that far-fetched. It certainly happened in 2004 when USC and Oklahoma went undefeated and Auburn, the undefeated SEC champion, finished No. 3.”

USC lost the next night at Oregon State, 27-21.

Georgia lost at home that weekend to Alabama in the infamous blackout game, trailing 31-0 at the half and losing by a final score of 41-30.

Oklahoma lost to Texas 45-35 on October 11.

So all 3 of the teams in Tony’s “what if it is 2004 again?” scenario lost in the next 3 weeks. It could happen again this year. After playing Duke this weekend, Alabama plays the 3 next best teams in the SEC according to the current polls in consecutive weeks: at Arkansas, Florida, at South Carolina. They could lose any of those games and if they look ahead like Tony and Georgia fans did in 2008 they will lose.

Is it a news flash to state that Boise State won’t make it past Alabama and Ohio State or Oklahoma or Texas or Florida or South Carolina or Oregon or Wisconsin or Iowa or any other team that makes it through a major conference schedule undefeated? Any of those teams would pile up points in the computer rankings for beating good teams while Boise State is feasting on cupcakes.

Why would anybody who has followed college football and seen the many upsets every year worry about the final polls two weeks into the season? Is the regular season too boring?

Arkansas, Florida, Auburn and GT will all beat UGA this year.

Also – Misssissippi State and Kentucky are 50/50 games.

Good thing Tennessee and Vandy are both below UGA.

My prediction is that Richt will be gone after 2011 season – he is like Tuberville. Had the program going – got complacent – got STALE – lsot recruits and settled average kids to fill roster slots – and now UGA is average. UGA will need to make a Head Coach change to spark the program.

Still, it troubles me to end a kid’s future because of a stupid mistake.
Clearly his girlfriend doesn’t consider him a threat to her safety since she insisted on not pressing charges.

Tony,

2004 all over again? Undefeated Auburn getting left out was BS, but they played in the best conference in college football (or at least 1 of the 2 best at the time). And in the case of 2004, someone in a major conference had to be left out. An undefeated 2010 Boise State is not remotely analogous to an undefeated 2004 Auburn. Boise State should not get the NC even if OSU and Bama both have 1 loss. B/c Boise State, sans VT (which happens to seem terrible this year) and Oregon State, plays in a dumpy conference against creampuffs week in and week out.

Auburn had a legitimate complaint in 2004. Boise State, under current circumstances, will never have a similar, justifiable complaint.

Nothing personal but the Kool Aid some of you drink clouds your perception of what’s going on in Athens, or more appropriately, what’s not going on in Athens. Good program management, and coaching. We go, and we watch the games, we observe and evaluate all phases of the game. We know CMR doesn’t listen to what we say as far as our thoughts on what our strategy and decisions would be. We come on the blogs to discuss the games, question and talk about the strategy, voice our opinion, as fans and supporters we have that right, most of us love our Dawgs.

You’re right, we don’t know everything that goes on, but we do see the results and we don’t like them. I will be glad to debate any of you on football topics any day and take thoughts and feelings out of it We can agree to disagree but leave the arrogance, name calling, and otherwise snide attitudes unposted please.

Auburn Pride, I’m also an AU fan, but you are jumping the proverbial gun. Last 5 years, you’re 3-2 against Bama, but not likely to win this year either. 1-4 against LSU, 1-4 against UGA, 2-3 against Arky. Plus you have SC and KY from the East. I’d say you’d be lucky to split these 6 games. Hope I’m wrong, though. Also, it’s awfully early to be writing the Dawgs off, after one loss.

As an Auburn fan, the only thing I’m concerned with at this point is whether or not we have improved over last week. In case people forget, Clemson was the #2 team in the ACC last year.

How ’bout we play ‘em one at a time?

1. Way too early to think about.
2. I don’t think Miles knows what to do.
3. I don’t have all of the facts, but let’s hope UF handles the situation appropriately.
4. That’s a nice bit of trivia.
5. It appears that the only people who wanted to move the game to Charlotte were the Alabama fans. Can’t blame Cutcliffe for trying to maintain any perceived advantage (home field) he might have in this game.

As for the rest of the season and the year end poll I guess we have a lot of football to watch. If OSU and Bama run the tables no way in hell Boise should move up. They better look out for Texas, they may pass them.

Unless anything new arises from the Tennesee event, it’s over for me.

As UT was driving at that point, down by what, 13-14, a score there would have pulled us within reach. But the 7 point swing went the other way and killed the Vols. It’s not just Texas that would pass Boise State in the polls. Any undefeated team from the SEC, Big 10, Big 12 or Pac 10 will move past Boise State by November based on the computer rankings which consider strength of schedule. That includes teams currently outside the top 10 like South Carolina, Arkansas, Auburn, LSU, Stanford, Texas Tech, etc.

Auburn was blocked in 2004 by 2 teams that were ranked high early AND ran the table in major BCS conferences, USC and Oklahoma. Had Boise State been in the place of one of those 2, Auburn would have moved right past them to play in the BCS championship game no matter how low they were in the rankings at the beginning of the year.

Every undefeated team in the BCS conferences controls its own destiny to the BCS championship game unless more than 2 of them end the season undefeated.

2. Can LSU bring back Matt Mauck?
3. You are spot on about Demps. He sparked both wins. If I was an opposing coach, I’d be figuring a way to shut him down.
4. Wake & Duke should join the Big XII: all O, no D.

Tony only wants to pay college players this week. If a player from one of his rivals–FL,SC, TN does the same thing next week, he’ll be calling for thier heads. If a Ga player committed the infamous “text threat”, he’d go into a dissertation on the problems associated with texting and how they ought to be private. And boy has it surfaced. I think he runs the table in the east but nobody beats bama this year. The same “pay the players” spiel that has been going on since at least the 1960s. I would agree to pay-for-play under the following condition: Private funding, no affiliation with the university whose facilities are rented (including all facilities improvement and maintenance costs.)

Thus, the “Bulldogs” would not be affiliated with the University of Georgia, and the “Yellow Jackets” would not be affiliated with the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Presumably, the former college football teams would be funded by professional football leagues as minor league professional football.

I don’t see how the economics would work. Pro leagues would be responsible for player recruiting and development. They don’t need 120 Div. I teams/locations, not to mention Div. Iaa, Div. II and Div III. The World Football League and other NFL developmental leagues have been financial failures.

The benefit to the educational institutions is there would be no more of the so-called “student-athlete sham.”

The Alternatives:

1) A much better idea is for the universities to require student-athletes to meet full requirements for admission with no special qualifiers and with no tutoring except that which is provided to all students. Over 4 or 5 year periods, the student-athletes metrics for SAT scores, graduation rates and grade-point average must fall within defined limits of the regular student population. Student-athletes must be treated as part of the overall student population, not as exceptions. How an 18 to 21-year old gets “developed” sufficiently to perform in a professional sports league is not the responsibility of a university.

2) The do-nothing alternative is no change to the existing system. Academically substandard (some, not all not are not appropriate for college-level academic work) student-athletes are placed in a situation where their primary responsibility (at many schools) is to provide entertainment at high performance levels (like professional teams) until such time that they graduate, leave voluntarily or exhaust their eligibility to maintain their “scholarship.” Many are simply attendees who have little interest in obtaining a higher education. Paid coaches and administrators manage these student-athletes during their time at the school.

Those are the starkly contrasting limits. Can there really be solutions within those limiting cases?

As an AU grad who LOVES watching Boise St play against big schools… they will get hosed if Bama and OU run the table. I feel for them and think they’re doing everything they can to make a case for their program, but even the Mountain West isn’t a big enough jump in 2011. They should have begged, borrowed, and stole to get in the PAC-10. I think the only comparison to my 2004 Tigers is that both teams played VT – just VT was better in 2004.

I think CMR is an incredibly decent human being who has represented UGA well. I also think he needs to get control of his team or start polishing his resume. UGA has a way of salvaging a season and they keep smacking AU around every year, so CMR’s got some things to hang his hat on. But as of right now, I can see why the Dawg Nation is barking loudly.

Let’s face it, the Big 10 has one credible competitor in OSU, but even them Bama, injuries, suspensions, etc notwithstanding, will beat them badly. Perhaps not as badly as PSU, but then in a NC game you don’t call off the dogs until you’re way more than 3 TD’s ahead. Bama went easy on PSU, and I’m sure Saban has a lot of justified respect for a classy act like Paterno, despite the fact that he should have retired years ago.

“1. Auburn did not get a shot in 2004 for the same reason Boise will not this year: WEAK schedule. You are right, it is early. I would not count out Oregon or Oklahoma just yet.”

Auburn in 2004 had a tougher SOS than Oklahoma and USC combined. They also beat more ranked teams than either team.

USC cheated.

Yeah, unlike Alabama who plays Georgia State or Florida in 2008 who played THE EXACT SAME SCHOOL as Auburn did.

It’s funny how people dis Auburn 2004 yet never say a word about Florida who played the exact same “weak” OOC team Auburn did. Also, Alabama plays 3 cupcake games OOC.

Auburn has the same problem now as they did back in 2004: No national appeal. I’ve lived in a couple of places outside the southeast. Most of the folks I talked to in those places (in the limited number of instances when Auburn was mentioned) didn’t even know in which state Auburn is located. They think it’s in Georgia.

Yeah that makes a lot of sense. You know, since no one in sports has uttered those words when talking about the title game. If Auburn lacks appeal then so would LSU and Bama. Both schools are from backwards hillbilly states.

“Most of the folks I talked to in those places (in the limited number of instances when Auburn was mentioned) didn’t even know in which state Auburn is located.”

That’s because most folks in the trailer park in which you lived, had no access to television.

“They think it’s in Georgia.”

Yeah, and most people don’t even know what country the US broke off from.

Every year we Bama fans hear rumors about Saban leaving Alabama and this year we get more of it. I think it is time you people who buy into these silly rumors to realize that Saban could still be in the NFL if he had wanted to but he did’nt want to. He misssed college football and regretted leaving LSU after he had built it so strong. So he came to Alabama and has a chance to go out on top and win more NC’s at Alabama. He loves college football and does not desire to coach in the NFL.Remember he left the Doilphins, it was his decision to leave. If he wants to leave and be a NFL coach then why did he take a huge pay cut to come to Alabama and not stay in the NFL?

The fact you people hate Alabama is nothing new when you are on top like Bama has been many times it kinda comes with it. But you have to knock Alabama off the mountain and until you do Alabama is on top. I would think after being bombarded with Tebow you would be glad to her about something other than Tebow but NO! it is now Alabama.

Yeah, Bama is on top once every decade or three. People don’t really hate the school as much as the inbred uglies that reside in and around Tuscaloosa. The only thing Bama ever had was Bear Bryant and he died a long time ago. Someone should inform the hillbillies that he isn’t coming back.

Sure it is possible Alabama could lose a game but after seeing the Penn St game and seeing how Alabama beat Penn St I have to say I think Alabama has a better chance to be undefeated this year than last year.Alabama showed how impressive the coaches have built at Alabama and beat Penn St without showing Urban Meyer, Bobby Petrino, etc what Bama does when they watch tape.Alabama beat Penn St running vanilla scemes on both offense and defense while rotaing players in and out the whole game and even when Bama had the back-ups in Penn St still could’nt score a touchdown eventhough there were a few blown coverages.

Rainey should be kicked off the team and the NCAA should take the lead and ban players such as Rainey, when he or she is kicked off a team, from all future NCAA athletic competition, at any level (i.e. he or she should not be allowed to go to Auburn, ‘Ole Miss, or any other school and allowed to play)?
What Rainey did was wrong, but what do you expect when the FCC, movie makers, video game makers continue to set examples by including the same kind of talk/threats/actions in their content?

I think Tony lives in 1954. He clearly doesn’t get how football works. It shows in his writing and in his tv show. I could care less who wins in football but I do enjoy watching it. When I read news about the game is it too much to ask that it is not written by a closet Bama fan? Alabama is good, but give me a break. THEY ARE BEATABLE. THEY WILL LOSE SOON. LUCK RUNS OUT. BEING RANKED #1 IS A RECIPE FOR FAILURE. Just ask the team from Florida, which I said the same thing about last year.

What antics, ma’am? I was simply pointing out that no one outside of Tuscaloosa gives a crap about bama. Any school that hires and fires coaches all while thinking that they will find the next Bear Bryant is just plain creepy. Yeah, Saban is a great coach and you gals paid a lot of money to buy that championship but the fact remains that Bama hasn’t been relevant since 1992. Before that, bama wasn’t relevant since the 70s.

Hardly a success.

Bama will lose at least 2 games this season. They’re arrogance almost lost them two games last season. One in which they came back with .52 seconds on the clock against a mediocre Auburn team.

Mr. David Cutliffe is one of the most impressive coaches in today’s money hungry athletic world.
Cutliffe was fired at Ole Miss with a winning record because he stayed loyal to his coaching staff.
Cutliffe turned down the higher paying Tennessee job to remain at Duke.

Wish there were more unselfish and honest coaches like Cutliffe.

Tony, I always feel a little extra punch when you talk about Florida situations. I am not real sure you legal logic works. I have daughters and I would be asking them why they had found such a jerk to waste their time with. There were some bad choices made on both sides of that equation. Like my daddy use to say, “you knew it was a snake when you picked it up.” Do you think Chris Rainey was a choir boy up till this moment? Even more do you really think Rainey would kill the girl, did he get physical like our Bobby Cox did who is still working for the Braves or actually several other athletes and sport’s celebrities? You can’t defend something like this but it sure doesn’t need the mouthpiece for the Georgia mafia churning it up for his own agenda either.

Duke brings some class back to college athletics. Maybe the thing there is Duke doesn’t exist for football or basketball, they have bigger fish to fry. Study the state of North Carolina, it has all the handicaps of the south yet through education has risen above it. When you are laying out the ACC after a week like the last one, you might think about how bad this mobile home park call college football needs some class.

In the ACC, implementation of the word “class” amounts to a mere excuse for shoddy performance.
