Is this going to be 2004 all over again?

Nobody asked me but:

1. I know it’s early, but it’s starting to look like 2004 again: Remember 2004? Well Auburn sure does. That was the year that USC and Oklahoma started 1-2 in the polls and never lost. Auburn started at No. 17, got to be No. 2 for a week, but in the end it was USC and Oklahoma playing for the championship with Auburn playing the odd man out.

Have you looked at the gap between Alabama, Ohio State, and everybody else in the coaches poll? Alabama got 55 first-place votes after its impressive win over Penn State. Ohio State handled Miami easily and got the other four first-place votes. There are 132 points between No. 2 Ohio State and No. 3 Boise State. That is a very wide gap.

Here is the point: If Alabama and Ohio State win out, I don’t think anybody, including Boise, cracks the top two.

Again, I know it’s early.  It’s just something to think about.

2. It’s time for LSU to bring back Jarrett Lee: I like Jordan Jefferson. He’s a nice kid with good athletic ability. But the fact is that LSU is not going to go where it needs to go with him at quarterback. Jefferson completed only eight of 20 passes for 96 yards and no touchdowns in last Saturday’s win over Vanderbilt. Even Les Miles, who has been very patient with Jefferson, knows he has to get more from his quarterback if the Tigers are going to think about competing  for the SEC West title. Miles said the coaches would evaluate the quarterback position this week. “Frankly we’re going to expect more out of the position, period,” he said.  By Tuesday he had sort of backed away from that statement. Jefferson is his guy–for now.

Lee had a nightmare of a season in 2008 when he had six interceptions returned for touchdowns and 16 interceptions total. But the fact is the kid has a good arm and just needs help rebuilding his confidence. That is what coaches are for. Lee needs to see the field Saturday against Mississippi State.

3. Florida just needs to get the ball to No. 2: Florida may have found its offensive identity post-Tim Tebow in last week’s win over South Florida. Jeff Demps averaged 12.6 yards every time he touched the ball against the Bulls and had 255 all-purpose yards. Florida had 251 yards rushing and 172 passing. Rather than ask John Brantley to throw it all over the ballpark, the Gators probably just need to get the ball to Demps a whole lot.

You have to get the ball to Demps because it looks like Chris Rainey is not going to be around. Rainey was arrested on felony stalking charges early Tuesday morning. According to arrest records, Rainey texted the message “Time to Die” to a female who he has been dating, according to reports in the Gainesville Sun and the Orlando Sentinel. That arrest report is a matter of public record.

I’m going to see how this plays out and so I’m only going to say this:

IF the arrest record is completely accurate and Rainey did send that message to the female, regardless of their relationship, he should be done as a college football player. Period. If I’m the father of that girl, and some harm comes to my daughter because this is not handled properly, I will soon own a big chunk of the University of Florida. I have zero tolerance for men threatening women. And if some yahoo calls to harrass and intimidate the woman because he’s worried about his precious football team, then that person is going to be tracked down and prosecuted as well.

And I sure as hell don’t want to hear from Rainey’s lawyer, Huntley Johnson, Jr.,  who told the Orlando Sentinel : “I think he’s a hell of a nice young man and I assure you that he wold never hurt this woman.”

I hope you’ll understand, Mr. Johnson, if we’re not quite willing to take your word on that.

4. The 102 points scored in Wake Forest’s 54-48 win over Duke last Saturday in Winston-Salem was the SECOND highest total ever in an ACC game. The highest scoring ACC game ever came in 1981 when Clemson beat Wake Forest 82-24 in Death Valley. I was there.

That was Clemson’s national championship season. Al Groh, now the defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech, was the head coach at Wake Forest. What I remember was Clemson’s mascot, dressed in a Tiger suit, who would do pushups to match the home team’s points every time they scored. His name was Ricky Capps and as the score kept growing he was getting pretty gassed. When Clemson got to 76 points the Demon Deacon mascot of Wake Forest gave Capps a break and did the 76 for him. Capps did 435 pushups that day.

5. Kudos to Duke for keeping Bama game in Durham: After playing Duke at home in 2006, Alabama is returning the game this Saturday at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham, which seats 33,941. Duke had the option of moving the game to Charlotte and a 73,000 seat NFL Stadium. It would have been a nice payday because the place would have been full with Alabama fans. But Duke head coach David Cutliffe, a 1976 graduate of Alabama who was a graduate assistant to Bear Bryant, realized how important this game was to the building of his program. “Some things,” said Cutcliffe, “are more important than money.”

An extra 3,900 seats will be brought in for Saturday’s game. Alabama fans will get another nostalgia trip as Duke’s Stadium is named after the man who won three national championships as the Crimson Tide’s head coach from 1923-30. Wade left Alabama for Duke in 1931.

@G8R, for you to have any tolerance of this is piss poor nand lacking character. You are an adult now, not a kid. Even UM said before this happened, “Rainey needs to be quarantined from the press”. Have a daughter and see if you feel the same. We may have all been “maddened” by a girlfried in college. Thinking and acting are WAY two different things. Glad to see most honorable UF grads and fans want to see this elite athlete gone. And, don’t compare this to selling a jersy. No female undergrad’s life was threatened.

“1. Auburn did not get a shot in 2004 for the same reason Boise will not this year: WEAK schedule. You are right, it is early. I would not count out Oregon or Oklahoma just yet.”

Auburn in 2004 had a tougher SOS than Oklahoma and USC combined. They also beat more ranked teams than either team.

USC cheated.

Auburn has the same problem now as they did back in 2004: No national appeal. I’ve lived in a couple of places outside the southeast. Most of the folks I talked to in those places (in the limited number of instances when Auburn was mentioned) didn’t even know in which state Auburn is located. They think it’s in Georgia.

Yeah that makes a lot of sense. You know, since no one in sports has uttered those words when talking about the title game. If Auburn lacks appeal then so would LSU and Bama. Both schools are from backwards hillbilly states.

“Most of the folks I talked to in those places (in the limited number of instances when Auburn was mentioned) didn’t even know in which state Auburn is located.”

That’s because most folks in the trailer park in which you lived, had no access to television.

Every year we Bama fans hear rumors about Saban leaving Alabama and this year we get more of it. I think it is time you people who buy into these silly rumors to realize that Saban could still be in the NFL if he had wanted to but he did’nt want to. He misssed college football and regretted leaving LSU after he had built it so strong. So he came to Alabama and has a chance to go out on top and win more NC’s at Alabama. He loves college football and does not desire to coach in the NFL.Remember he left the Doilphins, it was his decision to leave. If he wants to leave and be a NFL coach then why did he take a huge pay cut to come to Alabama and not stay in the NFL?

The fact you people hate Alabama is nothing new when you are on top like Bama has been many times it kinda comes with it. But you have to knock Alabama off the mountain and until you do Alabama is on top. I would think after being bombarded with Tebow you would be glad to her about something other than Tebow but NO! it is now Alabama.

Yeah, Bama is on top once every decade or three. People don’t really hate the school as much as the inbred uglies that reside in and around Tuscaloosa. The only thing Bama ever had was Bear Bryant and he died a long time ago. Someone should inform the hillbillies that he isn’t coming back.

Sure it is possible Alabama could lose a game but after seeing the Penn St game and seeing how Alabama beat Penn St I have to say I think Alabama has a better chance to be undefeated this year than last year.Alabama showed how impressive the coaches have built at Alabama and beat Penn St without showing Urban Meyer, Bobby Petrino, etc what Bama does when they watch tape.Alabama beat Penn St running vanilla scemes on both offense and defense while rotaing players in and out the whole game and even when Bama had the back-ups in Penn St still could’nt score a touchdown eventhough there were a few blown coverages.

Rainey should be kicked off the team and the NCAA should take the lead and ban players such as Rainey, when he or she is kicked off a team, from all future NCAA athletic competition, at any level (i.e. he or she should not be allowed to go to Auburn, ‘Ole Miss, or any other school and allowed to play)?
What Rainey did was wrong, but what do you expect when the FCC, movie makers, video game makers continue to set examples by including the same kind of talk/threats/actions in their content?

I think Tony lives in 1954. He clearly doesn’t get how football works. It shows in his writing and in his tv show. I could care less who wins in football but I do enjoy watching it. When I read news about the game is it too much to ask that it is not written by a closet Bama fan? Alabama is good, but give me a break. THEY ARE BEATABLE. THEY WILL LOSE SOON. LUCK RUNS OUT. BEING RANKED #1 IS A RECIPE FOR FAILURE. Just ask the team from Florida, which I said the same thing about last year.

What antics, ma’am? I was simply pointing out that no one outside of Tuscaloosa gives a crap about bama. Any school that hires and fires coaches all while thinking that they will find the next Bear Bryant is just plain creepy. Yeah, Saban is a great coach and you gals paid a lot of money to buy that championship but the fact remains that Bama hasn’t been relevant since 1992. Before that, bama wasn’t relevant since the 70s.

Mr. David Cutliffe is one of the most impressive coaches in today’s money hungry athletic world.
Cutliffe was fired at Ole Miss with a winning record because he stayed loyal to his coaching staff.
Cutliffe turned down the higher paying Tennessee job to remain at Duke.

Wish there were more unselfish and honest coaches like Cutliffe.

Tony, I always feel a little extra punch when you talk about Florida situations. I am not real sure you legal logic works. I have daughters and I would be asking them why they had found such a jerk to waste their time with. There were some bad choices made on both sides of that equation. Like my daddy use to say, “you knew it was a snake when you picked it up.” Do you think Chris Rainey was a choir boy up till this moment? Even more do you really think Rainey would kill the girl, did he get physical like our Bobby Cox did who is still working for the Braves or actually several other athletes and sport’s celebrities? You can’t defend something like this but it sure doesn’t need the mouthpiece for the Georgia mafia churning it up for his own agenda either.

Duke brings some class back to college athletics. Maybe the thing there is Duke doesn’t exist for football or basketball, they have bigger fish to fry. Study the state of North Carolina, it has all the handicaps of the south yet through education has risen above it. When you are laying out the ACC after a week like the last one, you might think about how bad this mobile home park call college football needs some class.
