Is this going to be 2004 all over again?

Nobody asked me but:

1. I know it’s early, but it’s starting to look like 2004 again: Remember 2004? Well Auburn sure does. That was the year that USC and Oklahoma started 1-2 in the polls and never lost. Auburn started at No. 17, got to be No. 2 for a week, but in the end it was USC and Oklahoma playing for the championship with Auburn playing the odd man out.

Have you looked at the gap between Alabama, Ohio State, and everybody else in the coaches poll? Alabama got 55 first-place votes after its impressive win over Penn State. Ohio State handled Miami easily and got the other four first-place votes. There are 132 points between No. 2 Ohio State and No. 3 Boise State. That is a very wide gap.

Here is the point: If Alabama and Ohio State win out, I don’t think anybody, including Boise, cracks the top two.

Again, I know it’s early.  It’s just something to think about.

2. It’s time for LSU to bring back Jarrett Lee: I like Jordan Jefferson. He’s a nice kid with good athletic ability. But the fact is that LSU is not going to go where it needs to go with him at quarterback. Jefferson completed only eight of 20 passes for 96 yards and no touchdowns in last Saturday’s win over Vanderbilt. Even Les Miles, who has been very patient with Jefferson, knows he has to get more from his quarterback if the Tigers are going to think about competing  for the SEC West title. Miles said the coaches would evaluate the quarterback position this week. “Frankly we’re going to expect more out of the position, period,” he said.  By Tuesday he had sort of backed away from that statement. Jefferson is his guy–for now.

Lee had a nightmare of a season in 2008 when he had six interceptions returned for touchdowns and 16 interceptions total. But the fact is the kid has a good arm and just needs help rebuilding his confidence. That is what coaches are for. Lee needs to see the field Saturday against Mississippi State.

3. Florida just needs to get the ball to No. 2: Florida may have found its offensive identity post-Tim Tebow in last week’s win over South Florida. Jeff Demps averaged 12.6 yards every time he touched the ball against the Bulls and had 255 all-purpose yards. Florida had 251 yards rushing and 172 passing. Rather than ask John Brantley to throw it all over the ballpark, the Gators probably just need to get the ball to Demps a whole lot.

You have to get the ball to Demps because it looks like Chris Rainey is not going to be around. Rainey was arrested on felony stalking charges early Tuesday morning. According to arrest records, Rainey texted the message “Time to Die” to a female who he has been dating, according to reports in the Gainesville Sun and the Orlando Sentinel. That arrest report is a matter of public record.

I’m going to see how this plays out and so I’m only going to say this:

IF the arrest record is completely accurate and Rainey did send that message to the female, regardless of their relationship, he should be done as a college football player. Period. If I’m the father of that girl, and some harm comes to my daughter because this is not handled properly, I will soon own a big chunk of the University of Florida. I have zero tolerance for men threatening women. And if some yahoo calls to harrass and intimidate the woman because he’s worried about his precious football team, then that person is going to be tracked down and prosecuted as well.

And I sure as hell don’t want to hear from Rainey’s lawyer, Huntley Johnson, Jr.,  who told the Orlando Sentinel : “I think he’s a hell of a nice young man and I assure you that he wold never hurt this woman.”

I hope you’ll understand, Mr. Johnson, if we’re not quite willing to take your word on that.

4. The 102 points scored in Wake Forest’s 54-48 win over Duke last Saturday in Winston-Salem was the SECOND highest total ever in an ACC game. The highest scoring ACC game ever came in 1981 when Clemson beat Wake Forest 82-24 in Death Valley. I was there.

That was Clemson’s national championship season. Al Groh, now the defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech, was the head coach at Wake Forest. What I remember was Clemson’s mascot, dressed in a Tiger suit, who would do pushups to match the home team’s points every time they scored. His name was Ricky Capps and as the score kept growing he was getting pretty gassed. When Clemson got to 76 points the Demon Deacon mascot of Wake Forest gave Capps a break and did the 76 for him. Capps did 435 pushups that day.

5. Kudos to Duke for keeping Bama game in Durham: After playing Duke at home in 2006, Alabama is returning the game this Saturday at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham, which seats 33,941. Duke had the option of moving the game to Charlotte and a 73,000 seat NFL Stadium. It would have been a nice payday because the place would have been full with Alabama fans. But Duke head coach David Cutliffe, a 1976 graduate of Alabama who was a graduate assistant to Bear Bryant, realized how important this game was to the building of his program. “Some things,” said Cutcliffe, “are more important than money.”

An extra 3,900 seats will be brought in for Saturday’s game. Alabama fans will get another nostalgia trip as Duke’s Stadium is named after the man who won three national championships as the Crimson Tide’s head coach from 1923-30. Wade left Alabama for Duke in 1931.

Ohio State also plays at Wisconsin. They look darn good, but it’ll be tough to make it through Wisconsin, Penn State, Iowa, and Michigan. If they do, obviously they won’t be dropping in the rankings.

You could call me a “techie”, I suppose, but that has nothing to do with that Ramblin’ Wreck in Atlanta. As a matter of fact, I have to go and build something right now. There is work to be done — if you’re good enough to get it.

Spurrier is usually pretty quiet when Dawgs hand him his A$$ most years. He’s pretty much classless.
Has anyone EVER heard Richt say anything negative about Carolina after winning. No. It’s called class, and you can’t buy it.

Big difference between Auburn 2004 and Boise St 2010? Auburn was pedestrian in the years leading up to their undefeated season. Boise has been consistent. But you’re right, even with a close loss or two, Boise won’t pass either of the top two teams (and would be jumped by an undefeated Texas/OU/Nebraska).

Btw, I realize I have no class and continually come to Tony’s blog for no other reason than to harass and belittle him. If I could find a job, I wouldn’t have so much time on my hands to do these petty things. But, my ex-boss, a UGA grad fired me for being, what he called, “a whining little b**ch”. That is why I’m so down on Georgia. Their grads ALWAYS end up owning the companies that the rest of us have to work for. And, they expect us to be respectful! Well they can forget it. It’s not fair that someone gets (what they think is) a good education and end up having to work for a Georgia grad. I’m mad and I’m going to keep insulting Tony.. because that’s just the way I am.

I think it’s time for SEC to come up with a transparent policy for player dismissal, that way, players would think twice before their out-of-mind behaviors.

I am not sure Chris Rainey is really a bad guy. Sometime young people do things without thinking of consequences, which lots of time they don’t really mean it. But what if the guy really mean it? that’s the million dollar question, a liability UF cannot bear.

But a transparent policy would be a good bar to set by SEC.

I’m sure Mr. Johnson understands that most of us would not take his word. I would only hope that you understand Johnson swore an oath to defend people’s rights as Americans which unfortunately includes gators who ON THE SURFACE should be in jail. There are players at other Universities who wear orange and run down hills who should be also.

Boise will be a left out this year…….but, The 2 best teams will be playing….It looks like Bama and Ohio State barring anything crazy happening, and as a college football fan, it will be a great game. A great way for Saban to bow out before heading to the Cowboys. Who will Bama go after….pretty hard act to follow…………..

Hey Tony

Will you and the press shut your mouth about Boise State

No one cares about Boise State, they play no one

All you media guru’s are doing is trying to increase ratings while making yourselves look like complete bufoons talking about a team that plays nobody.

If you want to do something about it, then you and the rest of the media need to start writing about how awful the BCS is, show how it can be changed, and do what you people do best,

Keep writing about it week after week until the “masses” demand the change, then you can talk about the Boise’s of the world

Tony, Tony, Tony – take a deep breath and settle down. Only 2 games have been played. There is a ton of football yet to be played. Alabama has a tough stretch coming with some well rested teams. Ohio State will stumble along the way. This season is starting the way all seasons do. In July the sportswriters and radio folk complain about early polls – then they dissect the prognosticators for weeks. Following that comes the outcry about playing the “little sisters of the poor games”. Following those games each team boasts about it’s win and potential for an undefeated season. Soon to come will be the tired complaints about the BCS, another lap around the early polls (when the first BCS rankings appear), upsets, coaches on the hot seat, complaints about coaches being fired – those who befriended the media (see B. Bowden), flies in the ointment, etc. Each year brings the same thing, the same drills, the same arguments. As I said earlier settle down and play the game that repeats itself each year.

could boise state beat alabama? could utah beat alabama? who would have thought that? alabama could have easily lost 3 or 4 games last year but as luck would have it they didn’t. it could happen this year but without the luck they could be in a low tier bowl. even ali used to shout i am the greatest but it turned out he wasn’t as he got his clock cleaned more than once. alabama may look invincebile now but one slip up and some other team will be the new idol. the slope is slippery.

Bama fans are fun to watch. When their school is a losing team for years, they are nowhere to be found. Then, when they buy a coach, they come out of the trailer parks in full force. Bama will lose a game this year, maybe two. Bama can make fun of Auburn all they want, but Auburn has nothing to lose right now. Bama has everything to lose.

Tony, your assessment of the Rainey situation at UF is perfect. His lawyer also seems to be a total jerk from his comments. Rainey needs to be permanently dismissed from the UF team, and I will be very disappointed if it does not happen. Knuckleheads like Rainey seem to crawl out from rocks at many SEC schools, and I do not blame the coaches (that includes the coaches at UGA, UT, Carolina, etc.). Somehow many gifted athletes develop a sense of being bullet proof on many campuses in thinking they are above the law and common sense. Hopefully, Coach Meyer will make Rainey an example by 86ing him from the Gator squad. I recommend fans of other schools worry ablout their own teams vice UF. The Gators will be fine without Mr. Rainey.
Go Gators!

So UGA could be 0-2 Saturday. Not saying that will happen, but it could very well happen…and if that happens, the heat on CMR comes to a boil. Dog fans don’t want to hear this, but it’s looking like the same thing Fulmer went through at UT in 2008. If UGA starts 0-2, then goes to Starkville and loses, CMR is done in Athens.

Realist…………..CMR may not have a choice…………….CPJ does……he is doing a good job at Tech. Selling Tech to the “type’ of div 1 player you need is tough. CPJ is perfect for TECH. I don’t think he will ever win the NC at Tech, because you need a top notch Defense to do that, and although Tech always has a couple of Studs on D, you really need more and Depth. I don’t mean disrespect to UGA fans. But this year’s UGA team looks eerily similar to last year, and lots of people calling for CMR’s job last year.

If you don’t lose to AR on the coming Saturday, you will more than likely lose to another SEC team down the road. New QB, new defense, now your biggest star is on suspension, it’ll be hard to win 10 games this year.

Tony, you must not have talked to Mike Leach before you wrote your post about the possibility of Bama going undefeated. I can see both Bama and OSU going undefeated but it will be tough for both of them. If they do they probably deserve to play for the MNC. OSU gets another spanking from the SEC.

As far as Rainey goes he just mirrors our society these days unfortunately.

I find it interesting how SEC fans bash Urban Meyer for the length of some suspensions he has doled out over the years, but the starting quarterback for Auburn (Cam Newton) was dismissed from the UF Football Team for receiving a stolen laptop then throwing it out the window into a dumpster when the police arrived at his apartment. I’m sure Coach Meyer would rather have him backing up John Brantley than a true Freshman. Seems like that punishment wasn’t too light, was it?

Sam Robards, Dawg Fan

September 15th, 2010
9:51 am

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: if Jim Tressel is going to win another NC at OSU, it’ll be this year. If they don’t win the NC, it’ll be because they either stubbed their toe along the way against either Iowa, PSU or a (thus far) improved Michigan squad or played an SEC squad in the BCSCG.

As for Boise, in this system, they don’t deserve a shot at the NC. They simply don’t have the schedule to warrant their inclusion. Besides, you did notice that their “marquee” (spelling?) win, Virginia Tech, just lost to an FCS SCHOOL (James Madison).

In fact, has anyone else notice that two big name FBS schools have lost to FCS competition this year? I smell a Georgia State upset of Alabama in November! :-D

As for Rainey, if it’s true, he should be out. I don’t care what his sleazy defense attourney says, there are some lines that you just shouldn’t cross. I think even Urban Meyer understands that and will take the correct steps should the police report prove to be accurate.

Gen Neyland. I don’t think Tennessee is exactly a good example of enforcing discipline. They only kicked one guy off the team after about six of them assaulted a cop. The only reason the one was kicked off was it was his second or third offense. No one else even missed a single practice. Bottom line is Dooley gives out a slap on the wrist for off-field physical violence and Richt suspends players for traffic violations.

Please coach Grantham know that NFL teams that play the 3-4 scheme don’t have 290 lb. Nose Tackles. He doe’s have two 320 lb. runstoppers who did not participate in Saturday’s loss. UGA coaching staffing here’s a word of wisdom, if the guy starting is playing poorly and can’t be replaced, why should he play better? Go DAWGS…Let’s hire D. Pollack for DC, D.
