Georgia nips Gamecocks on a late field goal

We went 9-1 the first week because we thought Virginia Tech would take care of Boise, which the Hokies almost did. But now it starts to get interesting with perhaps the best slate of second-week games that I’ve ever seen. So let’s get on with the Fearless Friday Forecast. Feel free to disagree with any picks, but if you do disagree, tell me WHY I’m wrong:

1. Georgia at South Carolina: Both teams looked very impressive in their openers (against bad teams) last week and the winner of this one gets an early lead in what appears to be a wide open SEC East. Georgia will welcome the return of running back Washaun Ealey but not wide receiver A.J. Green, who has been suspended for four games. The key here will be Georgia’s ability to run the ball effectively and take a wild crowd at Williams-Brice Stadium out of the game. This is the first SEC road game for Georgia QB Aaron Murray. You don’t want to ask him to do too much. I think Georgia will run the ball effectively and get a late field goal from Blair Walsh to win. Georgia 17, South Carolina 14.

2. Georgia Tech at Kansas: Kansas, under first-year coach Turner Gill, really stumbled out of the gate last week losing to North Dakota State 6-3. For the Jayhawks that 2007 trip to the Orange Bowl must seem like a million years ago. Georgia Tech is only going to get better as the offensive line continues to jell and Al Groh’s defense grows more confident. On what is a big weekend for the ACC, the Jackets do their part with win a road game against the Big 12. Georgia Tech 35, Kansas 10.

3. Florida State at Oklahoma: For a team that is ranked in everybody’s Top 10, Oklahoma sure did struggle last week in barely getting by Utah State. The Sooners are better than that with quarterback Landry Jones and a 1,000-yard rusher in DeMarco Murray. Florida State was impressive in its opener against Samford, but I’m afraid new defensive coordinator Mark Stoops, brother of Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops, doesn’t have the athletes to win a game like this on the road. Oklahoma 28, Florida State 17.

4. Miami at Ohio State: Brady Ackerman, my broadcast partner at CSS, tells me the Hurricanes have the right stuff to go up to the Horseshoe and win this game. Miami does have a bunch of good looking athletes and when quarterback Jacory Harris is playing well, the ‘Canes are tough to beat. But I just can’t see Miami going on the road and winning in such a tough atmosphere. So I’m going with the Buckeyes. But I’m not going to be shocked if Miami finds a way to win. Ohio State 17, Miami 14.

5. Penn State at Alabama: The Crimson Tide will be without two of its best players, running back Mark Ingram on offense and end Marcell Dareus on defense. Normally, that would mean trouble when you’re playing Penn State anywhere. But Penn State has a true freshman at quarterback, Robert Bolden, who looked pretty good last week in his debut at home against Youngstown State. But young Mr. Bolden will find out that playing in front of 101,000 of your fans is a lot different than playing in front of 101,000 of theirs. Alabama 24, Penn State 14.

6. South Florida at Florida: Florida beat Miami of Ohio last week but it sure didn’t feel like a win for the fans in The Swamp. That’s because the Gators had a grand total of 25 yards of total offense after three quarters. And did we mention that they bobbled the center-quarterback exchange 13 times? With a trip to Tennessee coming up next week there is a lot that needs to get fixed at Florida. Saturday begins that process. Florida 35, South Florida 10.

7. Oregon at Tennessee: The Ducks, who return 17 starters from a Rose Bowl team, were supposed to take something of a dip after losing quarterback Jeremiah Masoli. But even without their best offensive player, running back LaMichael James (suspension), Oregon was unstoppable against New Mexcio, winning 72-0. This is where Tennessee’s personnel gaps really begin to show. Tennessee fights hard at home but Oregon has too many athletes. Oregon 24, Tennessee 10.

8. Michigan at Notre Dame: Quarterback Denard Robinson gave Michigan fans reason to hope for a better season and coach Rich Rodriguez hope that he could keep his job when the Wolverines beat UConn last week. Notre Dame had a pedestrian win over Purdue in Brian Kelly’s debut as head coach. I just get the sense that Kelly saved a little something special for Michigan. This guy can coach. Notre Dame 24, Michigan 20.

9. LSU at Vanderbilt: Les Miles and the boys were very fortunate that they didn’t get beat by an undermanned North Carolina team at the Georgia Dome last Saturday. I saw a couple of things that really concerned me about LSU: No.1, they still can’t run the football effectively. No. 2, the defense of John Chavis is not as athletic as I thought it was going to be (aside from All-World cornerback Patrick Peterson). Still the Tigers go to 1-0 in the SEC. LSU 31, Vanderbilt 13.

10. Ole Miss at Tulane: It’s a little early in the season to have “must wins” but after losing to Division I-AA Jacksonville State last week, Ole Miss has to shake off the rust and blow Tulane out of the Superdome. Last week was a very strange one for Ole Miss, which began the week thinking quarterback Jeremiah Masoli would not be eligible and by Friday he was. The Rebels right the ship in New Orleans. Ole Miss 42, Tulane 14.

I disagree with 2 of your picks. FSU will beat OU.I thinks FSU has the upper hand in talent and brother Stoops D will shut down the anemic OU offense. FSU-27 OU-17. I also dont think Oregon will beat UT by 14. These kids from Oregon are gonna be shell shocked when they get a dose of Rocky Top in Knoxville. UT defense is pretty good. Alot closer than everyone expects-Maybe a UT win?

I think FSU gets it done. Also, as much as I have enjoyed watching Michigan struggle for the past few years, it looks like Rodriguez has his guy in Robinson. Any word yet on the NCAA and SC?

On a side note, why can’t more players conduct themselves like Auburn’s Darvin Adams? Make a play, find an official, hand him the ball. If he drops it, pick it up and hand it to him again. Classy.

UGA can’t win at USC without a strong passing game. USC will stack line to stop the run, forcing UGAs young quarterback to beat them, and I don’t think that he’ll get it done. USC has experienced quarterback PLUS all their players. USC 24-UGA 17.

No reason for this, but I have a feeling FSU pulls it out.

Oregon should win by more than two touchdowns. Tennessee just doesn’t have the athletes to compete with Oregon.

Michigan gets it done against Notre Dame.

HugoStiglitz

September 10th, 2010
8:35 am

UGA will lose by 10. The off the field distractions, plus Aaron Murrays first real college game will be too much to overcome. UGA was impressive last week but pretty much anybody would look impressive against La Laf. They lost 55-0 against Nebraska last year and Nebraska had almost no offense. SC at least beat a reasonable Souther Miss team, and beat them soundly. I also have a feeling that Fla St is going to pull an upset. The rest of the picks I agree with though. I dont think Ohio St and Miami will be that close though.

CDD will get a look at the team he really has this week and it may not be pretty. Personally, I don’t think UT is seasoned enough on both sides of the ball to take on Oregon but take them on they must. I see Oregon loading up the box and daring UT to fling it. Young OL, two KEY DL out, rebuilt secondary, WR injuries, Simms’ first real test, lack of game experience at RB, etc, and rumor I have from Atop Rocky regarding an injury to a Senior kicker I cannot confirm and won’t name…Albeit, I remain a faithful Vol and await a shocker :

Watching last night’s game, I came away with the distinct impression that the quarterbacks on both teams played with the same style as did Tim Tebow at Florida. I wonder if this reflects the influence of Coach Mullins? These quarterback-centric offenses, in which every play features a QB run option, are capable of catching most defensive units off-guard and producing big plays. The problem with this offensive philosophy is the constant threat of injury to the quarterback. The other issue that appears to be a problem is the center/qb exchange. I think that has much to do with the variety of alignments used in this offensive scheme.

Has anyone heard anything about how serious Ziemba’s injury was?

On paper, it should be a blowout. There may be no moral victories in football, but keeping this one close would be an accomplishment for Tennessee.

Believe you me, Spurrier wants NO MAS when it comes to facing a secondary coached by Scott Lakatos. The last time Spurrier faced Lakatos, Scott was at UCONN, the results was Garcia completing less than 40% of his passes, throwing for 0 touchdown’s. Spurrier will try to run to avoid getting his passes intercepted by Georgia’s corners. He’ll also try and hit seams to the safeties, and RB’s to try and avoid these 2 corners. Georgia will pick 2 passes, and win going away.

It’s amazing how much improvement is gained by bringing in new defensive coaches. Apparently, Georgia has now transcended their defensive woes of last year. They did win their opener, didn’t they?

Tony,
Like most of your picks but I think Miami with its defense and a “Vince Young” like performance from Jacory Harris will nip the Buckeyes by 3.I also see Florida winning but by much less, South Florida has got a pretty decent mobile quarterback and they are not as bad as you might think on defense. You did watch the Florida game last week right? Miami of Ohio? Anyway, I always love reading your column. Thank You

SimpleDawg

Your picks sound about right……except….

The Goldie Domers will struggle with Meechigan’s offense……Kelly can coach offense, but hasn’t shown much defensive acumen. Wolverines win a shootout 35 – 31.

I have a feeling that the Ducks will relish the opportunity to embarrass an out manned SEC team by running up the score…..Nike University hangs 55 points on the Vowels.

SC State could beat Kansas……GIT will mash the Jayhawks….say by 40 points.

UGA and USC almost always battle in low scoring thrillers decided more by mistakes than stellar play, but this year will be different. USC has it’s best team in 10 years, with talented skill players all over the field, but the Dawgs have a bunch of good players also. If UGA runs the ball well….200 yds rushing, and the Dawg defense pressures Garcia constantly, then they take a 33 – 20 victory. I see the Dawg offensive line and the Dawg front 7 making the winning difference in this game.

I think SC will beat UGA in a close game. Here is why:

1. Coaching: both are good
2. Athletes: UGA is better overall
3. Garcia is better than Murray, Lattimore is better than Ealey after suspension. SC has no good receiver, and UGA has no AJGreen.

Because of #2 and #3, it’ll be close game. but heroism of Garcia and Lattimore will win this one for SC.

This is my opinion: Auburn is not as good as people thought. They are a little better than last year but not a whole lot better. Mississippi State is better than its old self.

Auburn has a schizophrenic offensive coordinator, a confused offense, a marginal defense and poor special teams play. For the most part, the games all get harder from this point, so if Auburn doesn’t fix some of these areas quickly, it could be a very long season for me and my fellow Auburn fans.

Both schools went to the Orange Bowl in the late 60s ………..GT in 67 and Kansas is 69 or 70, when they had John Riggins. Both teams did again go to the Orange Bowl lately, 07 for Kansas and GT in 09. In between these Orange trips Kansas did see a Cotton Bowl of two but GT has not been to any other bowl of consequence after Dodd was defeated by Florida in the 67 Urange.

The 1990 Citrus trip for GT was at the time a very insignificant bowl, although GT along with 3 or 4 other schools won the NC that year.

The major bowl factor has to go to Kansas. Also, the Kansas coach did run the triple option at Nebraska and so he will know who to defend against it. GT still wins against a very, very insignificant team 34-20.

Auburn had a conservative game plan last night—-threw the ball down field maybe 5 times the entire game. They just imposed their will and escaped Starkvegas with a W. AU’s defense shut down a Dan Mullen offense. Clemson really doesn’t have film to gameplan for…Auburns just going to run the ball down your throat…..

Auburn’s the real deal.

Tony, the UGAG running game is OVERRATED. They looked better at the end of last year because they were playing TERRIBLE defenses. Just like last year, this line and the two backs will not be enough to make up for the QB’s shortcomings. Same story, new year for the BullFROGS.

Tony it’s easy to 9-1 the first week of college football because there are not many competitive games. SC will beat GA by putting 8 men in the box forcing Aaron Murray to throw the ball. The inexperienced GA quarterback will be the difference in the game. SC 28. Ga 24

Welcome to clash of the titans week. This is the type of weekend you better get your chores done on friday night.

Well Auburn pulled it out last night in a very good game. The score was lower than predicted, but still both offenses looked quite formidable. If Missy St had a good QB they would really be a handful on offense.

UGA at USCe – This will probably look something like the game last night. Just replace those spreads with pro style offense. With AJ being out, this will allow USC to really load up in the box and force Murray to win this game. I liked what I saw from Murray last week, I think the Dawgs are well rounded enough to pull off the W.

Georgia Tech at Kansas – Um, Kansas lost to a Div1 AA team last week 6-3. Enough said. Nerds in a route.

FSU at Oklahoma – Oklahoma gave up ~ 350 passing yards to Utah St last week. Guess who coaches Oklahoma’s secondary? Why none other than the infamous Willie Martinez. I think FSU wins this one and steps back into the national spotlight for a little while.

Miami at Ohio State – This one was tough for me, but in the end I think Ohio State’s D line will be > Miami’s O line and that will be the difference in the game. This might be the most entertaining game of the week.

Penn State at Bama – Penn State probably has enough to keep this close….for the first half. I expect Bama to pretty much win this one comfortably.

South Florida at Florida – Boy, them Gators looked rough last week huh? 8 fumbles from the center to QB exchange? Meh, I still don’t see them losing to South Florida and those are the kind of things you fix in practice once you realize it’s going to a problem like that. Florida and it’s not close.

Oregon at UT – I don’t know what the spread is on this but I’d guess it’s probably a lot. I’d take UT and the points. This one will be closer than the experts think and I wouldn’t be blown away if UT pulled off the shocker. That said, UT just doesn’t have enough depth and Oregon will probably pull away towards the end.

Michigan at Notre Name – Who knows? These two has been teams are trying to be relevant again……..I’ll go with Michigan. They had so much trouble in the off season, I think it brought them together some. Brian Kelly will be a better coach at Notre Name than his large predecessor, but that will come next year.

LSU at Vandy – I don’t have a lot of confidence in LSU right now. But I have more with them than I do for Vandy.

Now don’t forget folks to prevent the bed sores and get up off that coach every couple of hours or so and move around.

I’m 50/50 on the my Dawgs! I guess after 2 years of looking at a sub-par defense I need to see them break out and have a great game against a good team.

I think the noles will pull this one out. Something about them this year. They have a swagger.

I’d love to see Tenn. come out of nowhere a beat Oregon. However, Oregon is loaded this year. I would never sell UT short. They still have some athletes up there.
Good luck to all!

Nothing about the history of this game says it…nothing about the showing from both clubs last week says it…we ain’t talking about Spurrier and Florida versus Goff and Georgia…in other words, I ain’t buying it. I agree on Georgia winning on a late field goal. But I don’t see the running game being effective until the 4th quarter when the SC defense wears down. I expect Ellis Johnson will stack the box and try to make Aaron Murray carry the load of the offense. S Carolina always has some good athletes and great coaching, and on top of that, this date is always circled on their calendar. But Georgia typically wins this one with superior depth. Add to that our edge in the kicking game, and I see this year being no different.

I do think FSU will score more points than you allow. I have a feeling that between FSU or Miami, one of them will pull out the upset on the road. Not sure which one, but I’m leaning toward FSU.

Steve –

I never said, nor claimed, any of the two things you just mentioned. If anything is “irrelevant,” it’s your post.

The Suckeyes will show their true colors soon enough. The most over-hyped conference in the nation will yet again show the world why they belong in BCS obscurity.

USCE-UGA will be the best game. I had picked the dawgs till I saw that Nebraska’s anemic, horrific offense also put up 55 on Lafayette last year. Just can’t see a freshman qb w/out AJ winning this huge road game. Garcia looked really good, his backup even better, and the Lattimore kid is as special as his recruiting ranking. SC wins a close one.

Lewis Grizzard,

Carolina has no good receivers? What? Alshon Jeffrey was one of the top wrs in the sec last year as a freshman. They have something like 4 wrs that are 6′3 or taller and they’re all pretty decent wrs. Watch out for Jeffrey, Gurley, and those other tall tree wideouts.

Big 10 and SEC play by contract in the Outback and Capitol One Bowls
Capitol One Big 10 6 SEC 4 in last 10 years (5-1 Big 10 in last 6 years)

Just because OSU has spit the pacifier in 2 Championship games doesn’t mean that the SEC dominates the Big 10 in bowls.

Paul in RDU,

Very true. We tend to be SEC homers and point out that Ohio State is 0-9 against the sec in bowl games. What people forget is that the Penn State is 6-2 against the SEC since the 90s, Michigan has had a lot of success against the SEC, Iowa has had success against the sec, and head to head they’ve done well against us in the Capital one bowl. They are not as deep as the SEC but their top 4 or 5 teams are good football teams- OSU, Penn State, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Michigan in most normal years.

I agree with your comments comparing the SEC with the Big 10. The top 5 (soon to be top 6 when Nebraska joins) are excellent teams but there is a big drop off after that – IL, IN, MSU, MN, Purdue should be better and are well behind the SEC equivalents
Don’t forget that the Big 10’s small, private academic school bested their SEC counterpart last week.

It’s kind of sad to see all the Dawg fans getting so excited this year (just like the year before, the year before that, etc.). How long is it going to take for UGA fans to realize that UGA is simply no longer relevant in the SEC? In the national picture, UGA isn’t even a blip on the radar, and hasn’t been since the preseason #1 ranking two years ago.

Sit back and be grateful for the seven or eight wins you’ll get every year. Coaching genius Mark Richt may take you to 8-4 or even 9-3 occasionally, but Florida will still win the SEC, meaning no BCS bowls and no top 10 final ranking. Most years, UGA will be very lucky to finish in the top 25, and only after a big bowl win over a nobody opponent.

It’s a different world now, and Dawg fans need to adjust their expectations downward to reflect reality.

Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Dawgtard Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many blue chip high school players go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.

Get your heads out of the sand and face reality. And mediocrity and irrelevance.

And congratulations on being the odds-on winner of the Fulmer Cup for the sleaziest football team in the country. That’s something to be proud of, isn’t it.

Garcia struggled last year pretty much with some mistakes and no pressure from our pathetic defense. If we get pressure and in his face then we can force his hand and that would work to our advantage if we make him think before the play is off. That is when Garcia makes mistakes. If he has all the time to through and pick then it will be a problem.

But don’t forget, we have guys who can coach and adjust and that will go along way….been a while since spurrier played a UGA defense with this kind of motivation, speed, and coaching. So I think that is the X factor. If it is there, we win. If it is not then we lose.

NO WAY uga beats USC this weekend.

NO WAY IN HE11!

USC BEAT uga last year – but uga won the game. USC is much improved defensively and offensively.

Here is a breakdown:
HEAD COACH
Spurrier vs Richt – both are very good
GAME DAY Coach – Spurrier

Offense
– Spurrier vs BOBO – Spurrier wins
– QB – USC
– RB’s – even
– WR – USC (green is out)
– TE – uga
– OL – uga (usc much better)

DEFENSE
Coaching: Ellis – USC better defensively lst year – and Grantham is new at UGA – but here is where UGA might see most improvement.
– CB – USC
– LB – even
– DL – USC
– Safety’s – UGA

HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE – USC

Here is how the game will unfold
1. USC will score early and build a lead.
Why? Bobo will be to conservative as USC will come out wide open.

2. UGA will settle in – the game will become a struggle for both teams.

3. USC will score late – and win turn overs late as UGA will be chucking it around to play catch up. Losing Green will hurt UGA

Final Score – USC 28 – UGA 17

Mark Richt needs to lose his job, and let someone take over that has this programs interest at heart and not the next paycheck from Dalton or Ford Motor Company

South Carolina-

Garcia, well we have seen him play for years, same as always, erratic
Shaw , pulled the ball and run the QB keeper round the outside, not impressed, no SEC arm.
Spurrier still cant find his Jessie Palmer-cough cough

Add to that again, minus Demps’ abberation and excluding the fluke, tip-drill, lucky a$$ last TD, the score would’ve been 21-12!

He lives in a modest home, drives a modest vehicle, gives 30% of his money to church and charity. And, when asked if he is bothered that Mack Brown, Bob Stoops, Urban Meyer, Nick Saban and Les Miles make more money than he makes. He simply chuckled and said “no, I makes more than enough money”. So please don’t accuse him of being a self-centered sellout.
The only thing anyone can honestly say about Mark Richt (with any validity) is that he is too soft and will not step on an opponents throat when he has them down – like Meyer and Saban do. He’ll play every player on the team first. A lot of Georgia people think that an admirable trait. As long as he maintains one of the highest winning percentages in the country, while maintaining high moral fiber, the Dawg Nation will stay behind him.

FSU beats Oklahoma simply because 1/4 Willie coached the Okie DBs. They gave up 340 to Utah State, look for FSU to hang 500 on ‘em. 1/4 gets canned mid-year when Okie is 3 – 3 and their DBs are the worst in the nation.

Michigan beats ND, Kelly doesn’t have to talent base to be holding anything except a prayer cloth, much less holding something back.

Some interesting stats regarding starting a freshman qb. Penn St. has a freshman qb this year and a true freshman at that.

Freshman quarterbacks are pretty rare to begin with, especially true freshmen, and are rarely associated with winning teams. For example, Matt Barkley started at Southern California, Tate Forcier did the same at Michigan and Landry Jones stepped in at Oklahoma last season, and all three powerhouses had disappointing finishes (although there were obviously numerous reasons).

Of the top 100 quarterbacks in passing efficiency last season, only 15 were freshman with just one in the top 30 (Stanford’s Andrew Luck at No. 21).

DawgDogDawg – Mark Richt likes money- you dont make commercials for Ford and Dalton Carpet because of spare time. And dont give me that- bring exposure to GA bulldogs
Mark Richt is head of a football team that has fallen off the national stage, but has every advantage in the world to be a top 5 program year in year out. Just like Budweiser should in Nascar has no reason not to have the best team in racing.
Mark Richt took one of the most talented teams in the college football and led them to mediocrity and finished it up in 2007.
Georgia Bulldogs have every available resource in their hands, and flush it down the toilet every year. Richt has let his team go and lost control and will never rise again. Facts are Facts and cant be ignored.
Richt promised those parents he would watch out for their children during their 4 years with him and make them men, and so far he has treated them just like 90% of Americans treat their children, give them everything the want, no discipline, no boundaries, no consistency, which is not true love but the easy way out. Spare the rod and spoil the child does not mean to beat kids, but to put up a concrete wall that cannot be moved, To be a head football coach at Georgia you must be Respected.
Georgia could be held up to what Michigan was with the right leadership, but under Mark Richt it will never happen.

Lawdawg,

Lattimore is the real deal. He was the no. 1 or no. 2 rated high school back in the country coming out of high school and had a great game in his first game. From what the announcers in the USC-Southern Miss game said he is also big around 230 lbs.

Ealey is pretty good too and will only get better but he is only a half season ahea of Lattimore as far as experience goes. I like Ealey better because of his small edge in experience but if I both wanted to transfer to my team and I had a choice I would definitely take Lattimore based on talent and potential.

Nice post. Now why are you sooooo worried about UGA’s football program and its success or failure? BTW, there are about 100 other Div I football programs out there that would hire Coach Richt given the chance. Why? Because in the toughest conference in college football the man has won 10 games a year on average since becoming a HC. In case you don’t know, that is pretty damn good. WIth the new AD working with Richt I think the discipline problems go way down. We all now know that Evans lacked any discipline therefore as long as he didn’t get caught everything was cool with him. McGarity will take control of that.

Oklahoma loses to FSU. Landry Jones’ Passer Rating last week was 105.1, which is 25 points lower than the 2009 average for returning starters in the top 5 conferences. If Utah St. can shred Willie’s defense, Christian Ponder-led FSU will be like a turbocharged blender.

Michigan beats Notre Dame (again). They did it with freshman Tate Forcier last year, and he is sullenly riding the pine this year. The Irish looked rather pedestrian against Purdue and QB Robert Marve.

I’ll go with SC over Georgia, because Garcia looked very un-Garcia-like last weekend, they have several big and talented receivers, and Georgia may have problems repeatedly pounding the ball inside. It may come down to who has a better game with big plays, Murray or SC’s Lattimore. This will be the 1st real test of the new 3-4 defense. 1 point game.

What?

and you are right, many programs would hire Richt, but not SEC,ACC,Big 12, well he may get Ole Miss job, or Kansas job. But why do i care, because it is a shame to watch something go to waste, and blindly followed by masses of Walmart and Gas station shoppers. This program truly deserves better, and needs leadership, not Hollywood antics. College ball is not built on the coaches commercials but the players backs, and everyone needs to remember that.
I can remember What it was like back in 1980 and in the early years of 2000, when the program had a chance.
But now the program needs a change of guard to be able to rise to the level it is capable of

What’s Richt’s average been the past 3 years? 8.5?
And don’t count bowl wins. Averaging 10 wins in 13 games, isn’t all that great considering on a given year like this one, you won’t be playing any top 10 teams by the time you play them.
If he wins 10 this year, which isn’t likely, then the downward trend is reversed. But another 8 win season shows the trend still sloping down.

Opinion, “Gas station shoppers” where else can you buy gas? BTW, since the AD pays Richt he will make sure Richt does his job and will offer support and suggestions like most good bosses should.

Mark, agreed that the last three years have been “turrable” (as Barkley would say) but if you followed UGA football and knew the relationship between Coach Richt and Willie Martinez (the vaunted DC) then you would know that the majority of our problem were with the defensive side of the ball. And that Richt finally fired his best friend last year and made the move to get a new DC that will make a difference. Our offense hasn’t been terrible (they scored a lot of points last year) but Bobo is moving into his 3rd year as OC with his third different QB. Richt is now involved in the offense again. So take the last three years and true dawgs fans know why we lost as much as we did. Did I like it? Hell no. Will I take it? It is what it is. Nothing but good things in the future though. Changes have been made and he knows how to win.

Now please stop typing because I am not saying Murry is as good as Stafford, but he was a true freshman, threw three interceptions, and we still won. As a matter of fact, the defensive coordinator at that time was Willy Martinez.

I am not convinced that we will win tomorrow, but you can’t come on here with “you can’t beat us with a freshman QB” saying that the reason USCe will win is because every freshman QB will crap his pants at your stadium.

This year CMR is handling the offense or let say is closely supervising the offense and Grantham has the defense. The loses last year was because UGA got out coached. We had the players to win all but the Florida game. That’s what is going to be the difference this year. The difference in the UGA-SC game will be the new DC Grantham. The Junkyard Dawg Defense is back, and it’s about time! The “bend don’t break” mentality is gone and Garcia and Lattimore are in for a tough day. On offense King and Ealey will control the tempo and the clock so Murray won’t have to throw too often.

Tide Rising

September 10th, 2010
4:16 pm

DawginLex,

That;s a reasonable post. I picked USC to win tomorrow based on the different qb situation. I gotta go with a more seasoned qb than a freshman.

Georgia is much more powerful, especially on the O-line. More and better athletes too. But I don’t think the difference in athletes between USC and the rest of the top tier SEC teams is as big as it used to be though. They’ve closed the talent gap somewhat between themselves and UGA, BAMA, UF, LSU. I’m also expecting my Tide, Florida, and pretty much everyone to have a hard time with USC this year.

But if Georgia wins and Murray looks pretty comfortable and manages the game well then watch out. Could mean it will be a big year for the dawgs. .

Corninmypooh

September 10th, 2010
4:31 pm

Tide Rising -

Your post is decent as well. Personally, I think the talent of Murray overshadows his inexperience. Garcia has proven to struggle when he’s playing from his backside. I think Grantham is going to dial-up the pressure from ways Garcia has not seen yet and he’ll get frustrated. The difference in this game is Georgia’s defense and the return of Washaun Ealey.

What a handle. I watched Georgia last week but not real closely since I was also trying to watch 5 other asskickings at the same time. Correct me if I’m wrong but I didn’t see Grantham dial up a lot of blitzes or anything. I guess he just wasn’t going to show his hand before the USC game. The few passes that I saw Murray make he was pretty accurate, especially the td in the end zone flat.

I’ve never understood how anyone – even an alumnus – could support and take pride in UGA’s football team. When you look at their history for the past forty years, how can anyone ignore Jan Kemp and the “remedial studies” scam, the Jim Harrick fiasco, the DUIs in the athletic office, the DUIs and other arrests of players, the #1 party school tag (i.e., the most drunk students), the suspensions and outright dismissals, the Fulmer Cup, and on and on?

As disgraceful and humiliating as it is, I don’t see many alums and fans demanding an end to this sordid activity. It sets UGA apart as the kind of school most people abhor, and it’s become an embarrassment to the whole state of Georgia.

Will it never end? Apparently not while Mark Richt is at UGA. Richt is perhaps the biggest hypocrite in the United States. But even with all the cheating and lawlessness that he ignores, he still can’t win the SEC.

So you’re paying him to be BCS champions, but he can’t even win his SEC division. So why do you pay him millions of dollars a year?

Just asking.

September 10th, 2010

Ho hum, one of the worst divisions of BCS football has one of it’s “big games” with two teams barely ranked. Chickens v. Clarke County Parolees is a pretty weak “big game.” Have you seen the rest of the Parolees schedule? It’s like 1-AA.

Bama will probably beat Penn St, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Nittany Lions keep it close.
Oklahoma takes out Free Shoes U, but I think Ponder lets the Criminoles cover.
Tech takes out Kansas. It should be a rout.
Michigan over ND, that D can’t stop Rod’s QB.
Ohio State beats Miami, and proves Miami ain’t more than an 8 win team.
Oregon may be able to call their own number. Tennessee is in trouble, especially with Son of Cheat who failed at La Tech coaching them.

Gators take out USF, but it’s close. The Tebow hangover may last a while.
LeSU and Ole Miss? They can’t worry about style points, they just need to win against little competition.

Selling uniform to pseudo-agent = 4 game suspension
Criminal activity = Run Steps

Get it together NCAA.

X-MAS has come early for me this year? UcheaT finally got the letter from the NCAA about
cheating in football and mens basketball. We all know Kiffin and Coach O was cheating the
first day they were hired by Mike Hamilton and how he is still AD after the mess with Kiffin.
Sorry General Neyland who I like but I have been waiting for something like this to happen
for 8 long years after Fulmer and Roy Kramer tried to get Bama the death penalty.

A little historical perspective here. In twenty years SC has been victorious over UGA just five times. That’s right, five times. Richt has never lost in Columbia. And he won’t tomorrow. UGA 35-SC-9

Spurrier is due to win a home game vs UGA before he retires (which will be soon). Also don’t see Murray getting through this game without some mistakes. Ealey will fumble a time or two. UGA won’t be winning anything again until they find an OC who can compete with the best of the best in the SEC. Nothing personal, but Bobo is no championship OC. Tomorrow begins the whispers of a change in Athens at the HC position. I sure hope I am very wrong. Just a gut feeling. Other than that, I think FSU and Ga Tech win big tomorrow. Bama, UF, Ohio St., LSU, Miss and Oregon will win.

Tony……..I am picking two upsets out of your group of games. Starting with Miami over Ohio St. Ohio St always has trouble with teams who are very fast and Athletic. Just ask them about Texas and those teams from the SEC. Miami is that same kind of team and I think if Harris can keep from turning the ball over that the Buckeyes fall.
Everybody is acting like Notre Dame is back. Notre Dame still has to do alot to prove to me they are a contender again. I think Michigan has something to prove and they even played like it last week. I think they will have a strong running game again and limit the number of times Brian Kelly’s offense gets the ball. I think Michigan starts gaining some respect back this week when they win this game against the Irish.

MayBe now you will beGin to believe in AUBURN. AU just might be 11-0 going into the IRON BOWL with SPUAT! This is our year with a senior OL! An Elite QB! Great rb’s, a deep wr corps, a strong/quick dl, more lb’s, experienced db’s, senior k and p.

Watch out for the Auburn Tigers!

Seriously? You can’t be serious.

Auburn was lucky to escape Starkville with a W. There were only two sustained offensive drives in the entire game. Auburn had one on the opening kickoff and State had one on the opening kickoff of the second half. The balance of points scored were directly attributable to turnovers.

The star of your senior O-line was taken out of the game early on. Your QB is an “elite” hotdog. Auburn has shown in both of this season’s games that they still can’t tackle. The Tigers are setting records for stupid penalties.

And all of this leads you to brag about barely escaping defeat at the hands of the perennial bottom-feeder of the SEC West?

Ha! At least it wasn’t Vandy…

Georgia and South Carolina both look pretty good so far. Coach Bowden, on ESPN Gameday, said that the keys to the big games today are home field advantage and experience at quarterback. If he’s right, then that doesn’t bode well for the Dawgs.

I noticed that the Jackets are tied at 7 — who are they playing? Some team out West, isn’t it?

Clean house of all coaches with exception of defensive coordinator! Mike Dodo should have been gone last season. Six points? Six points! Totally unacceptable. Sit that idiot fumbling running back #3 on bench. Revoke his scholarship! Worthless untalented commode residue. This was completely unacceptable to true Bulldog supporters. I’m so done defending Richt. His teams consistently underperform. He consistently gets outcoached. He runs a sloppy, undisciplined program. Now that his recruiting classes aren’t super great, he is getting exposed. Start the search now for his replacement. 5-6 season should convince the rest of you I’m right.

7-3 straight up is OK Tony, but you are losing games because of a homer bias. UGa was never going to beat USC in WB this year. it wasn’t close. UGA is 2 years away from fielding a defensive team to fit their DC’s 3-4 scheme.

Ga Tech has huge problems on D. They can’t tackle which is customary for a Paul Johnson team.

You would have fared much worse vs. the spread this week.

Here’s a little SEC CFB advice. SPUAT, AU, LSU, ARKY, USC and UF are good teams, all other SEC teams will struggle vs. those teams. Pick accordingly…

Oh and BTW, the ACC is TERRIBLE! Pick against all ACC in non-conference games starting with Clemson will lose to Auburn in Jordan Hare Stadium this Saturday. I assume that is a big enough game to be included in your picks this week, even though it is Auburn and you are bowing to Saban way too much these days…

You are great covering CFB Tony, but your bias/opinions are not sound. Stick to reporting and leave the picking to the side…You would have lost a lot of money this week Tony vs. the Spread. You also picked MSU to beat AU, how did that turn out for ya’?

Georgia will be OK this season. You’ve got a freshman QB that is only going to get better as he learns the system. Green is back in 2 weeks. You should be back to full strength at RB nest week. The defense isn’t as bad as they looked yesterday. Hey they sacked SC’s QB 5 times. SC will lose at least 2 conference games & probably more. They play Alburn & Bama back-to-back this year. They can’t possibly win both of those. Between Arkansas, Fla, Kentucky, Tennessee they are going to lose at least one of those. SC implodes the second half of the year every year. They will do it again this year. I know, I’m a Carolina fan, but I’m a realist also.

What was the “Spread” on that game? That one probably would have been a winner for Tony if he was a betting man. Auburn, LSU and Arkansas have yet to do anything to prove that they are contenders. Florida didn’t get over it’s Tebow hangover until the second half of yesterday’s game.

Who would have thought that Alabama would be facing the best team in the ACC next weekend?

I still think that Georgia is better than they were last season. It would help if they stopped shooting themselves in the foot with stupid disciplinary problems. Having AJ on the field yesterday would have made a difference.

SEC Stock Report:

Alabama – UP – A 24-3 victory over PSU is good. Breaking Penn State’s 17 game streak of not allowing a +100 yard rusher with their backup RB is excellent.

Next Up: Duke

Auburn – UP – A win is a win. There’s not much else to say about this victory over MSU.

Next Up: Clemson

Arkansas – UP – A 31-7 victory over Louisiana-Monroe keeps hope alive in Arkansas.

Next Up: Georgia

Florida – UP – South Florida gave the Gators a game in the first half. The second half looked more like the Florida that people expect to see. Florida wins 38-14.

Next Up: Tennessee

Georgia – DOWN – Georgia played a decent game in their 17-6 loss to South Carolina. One is left to wonder whether a full roster would have made a difference for the Dawgs.

Next Up: Arkansas

Kentucky – UP – The Cats defeat Western Kentucky 62-28.

Next Up: Akron

LSU – UP – A 27-3 win over Vandy prevents Coach Miles from losing his hat — so far.

Next Up: Mississippi State

Mississippi – UP – A 27-13 win over the Green Wave is a step in the right direction. Okay… it’s only a baby step, but it’s a step.

Next Up: Vandy

Mississippi State – DOWN – A very close loss to Auburn is not enough to take the Bulldogs out of the SEC West basement.

Next Up: LSU

South Carolina – UP – The Georgia vs. SC game is in the process of becoming a legitimate rivalry. South Carolina’s 17-6 victory places them firmly in second place for the SEC East.

Next Up: Furman

Tennessee – DOWN – Tennessee hung with the Ducks longer than most would have expected. In the end, not enough depth on this Volunteer squad. Oregon prevails 48-13.

Next Up: Florida

Vanderbilt – DOWN – A loss is a loss. LSU 27 – Vandy 3.

Next Up: Ole Miss

This just shows that you cannot have your emotion overcome you when you make a pick.

I was about to pick Miami and FSU if anybody asked me. Those would be emotional picks because I don’t really know a whole lot about them and their opponents.

But I correctly picked SC over UGA. I just feel Lattimore is better than Ealey (kudo to me), Garcia is better than Murray (not quite), I also said SC had no good receivers but UGA had no Green (kudo to me).

I was dead on with Lattimore. He is the biggest difference maker. I was also dead on with receiver comments as UGA did not score a single touchdown, and SC relied heavily on Lattimore.
