The question: 12-0 Boise or 12-1 SEC, ACC champ?

I thought I had all my bases covered on Boise State yesterday. But for the past five seasons this football program has been a compelling thing to watch. Last night added yet another chapter to an incredible story and–I don’t think I’m overstating this–set the narrative for the rest of the 2010 college football season.

Yes, No. 5 Boise State beat Virginia Tech 33-30 Monday night in Landover, Md. But it wasn’t just the fact that the Broncos won. It was the WAY that they won. After coming out of the gate hard and knocking Virginia Tech back with a 17-0 run to open the game, the Hokies did what strong teams do. They settled down and began to grind it and wear Boise State down.

When Virginia Tech finally took the lead in the second half you expected Frank Beamer’s team to put the Broncos away. But there is a reason Boise State has won 50 games in the past four seasons plus this one night. They are poised. They are extremely well coached. And did I mention that they have a helluva quarterback?

Kellen Moore, who threw 39 touchdown passes and only three interceptions last season (that always looks like a typo when I see it) took his final opportunity and made the most of it Monday night in what was, for all intents and purposes, a road game.

Given the fact that EVERYTHING was on the line for Boise State’s season in that moment, Moore calmly and methodically drove his team down the field and delivered a 13-yard touchdown pass to Austin Pettis with only 1:09 left to win the game.

So let the debate begin anew. Let me refresh the argument based on what we saw last night.

If we get to the end of the season and there are multiple undefeated teams, one side of the argument says that Boise must be the odd man out because it did not play as tough a schedule as the SEC, ACC, Big Ten, or Big 12 conference champions.  Here are the pertinent numbers based on the CBSSports.com’s Top 120 that ranks every Division I-A team and its strength of schedule. These numbers were done before last night’s game.

TEAM………………………RANK………………………………SOS

VIRGINIA TECH…………..11……………………………..…….7

OREGON STATE………….17…………………………………..24

NEVADA……………………..41…………………………………..57

FRESNO STATE…………….48……………………….………69

WYOMING………………….62………………………………..59

IDAHO………………………..66……………….………………119

HAWAII………………………75………………………………..93

LA. TECH…………………….90………………………………..12

UTAH STATE………………..91…………………………..…114

TOLEDO………………………99………………………………76

SAN JOSE ST……………..110………………………………..20

NEW MEXICO ST………..112……………………………….98

Just look at the rankings and the SOS of the teams Boise plays after it faces Oregon State on Sept. 25. It is a very weak schedule because, after Boise, there aren’t many good teams in the WAC. That is a fact. Just look at those numbers and judge for yourself.

But here will be the Boise State side of this argument: Did you see us play? And if you did see us play is there any doubt, now that we are 50-4 since 2006, that we are a damned good team?

Boise State is a very good team. But there are a lot of very good teams out there. The question is: If you can only pick two teams to play for the BCS title, should Boise be one of them?

As I said yesterday, if we get to the end of the season and the SEC, ACC, Big 12, and Big Ten champs are all undefeated (that’s very unlikely, of course) then I don’t see the voters in the coaches and Harris polls telling one of the big boy conferences they have to make room for Boise. I could be wrong about that but I don’t think I am.

Where it gets fun, though, is if there are only two undefeated teams–Boise and somebody else–and if the SEC, ACC, Big Ten or Big 12 champ is 12-1 having played a conference championship game. We’ve seen those championship games push teams over the top of teams without championship games in the final BCS Standings (Remember Georgia in 2007?) THAT will be a fun argument.

But this much we do know. Boise is here and they are not going away if Oregon State doesn’t beat them on the blue rug on Sept. 25. With last night’s win the Broncos have earned the right to be in this argument.

Let the fun begin.

Why is Brent “I get a Woody over Boise State” Musburger commentating for ESPN. I cannot stand listening to this guy. Virgina Tech loses 5 yards and according to Woody ” a devastating loss dealt by BS”. Now he wants Moore (BS qb) the front runner for the Heisman after beating VT. Clearly, Woody forgets who rules college football…It is the SEC!!!

Did UNC get anyone’s respect other than mine? They’ve got deep talent on that team. UNC is reeling in great players it seems. I agree w/CD, Yates is a very good QB. He has returned to the form he displayed 2 yrss ago when he had good and experienced receivers. He will break all UNC passing and TD records if he stays healthy.

No ACC or SEC school is gonna play 10 teams outside the Top 40 and 6 teams outside the Top 75.

I think you said it all in one statement Tony: “Given the fact that EVERYTHING was on the line for Boise State’s season in that moment.” This WAS the test. That’s it. They had to pass one hard test and they’re done? I don’t agree with that. Teams in the SEC, ACC, and Big 12 have EVERYTHING on the line week in and week out. So is it fair for Boise State to win one hard game and play middle school opponents the rest of the year and hop in the national championship? Absolutely not.

There are some big big games this weekend…this Thursday thru Saturday will really thin out the herd. I would not want to be an addictive gambler this week with all the young players and unproven wins against some weak competition( and a loss by Ole Miss to a FCS).

Questions:’

Does UF bounce back and find an Offense?
Who controls the Line of Scrimmage- Georgia or USC?
Is FSU good or was Oklahoma just average last week?
Does Penn St. really have a good team or was Youngstown that bad?
Can Miam slow down OSU and can Miami score?
Does Dan Mullen have MSU ready to upest Auburn on Thursday night?
Who is real Michigan or Notre Dame?

The questions go on and on and on..

If Boise State and Ohio St plays in the BCS championship game I will pull for the broncos just
like I do for the crimson tide. Boise is for real and if they go 12-0 let them play for the national
title. I bet it would get the highest rated game of the year and it probably would get the David

The only way I put Boise St in the BCS discussion is if all four of their non conference games are against .500 or better BCS schools. Playing Va Tech and Oregon St is like playing Forida and Auburn in the SEC. Add two more, win them and then we can talk.

Bama Dude..that was my point…take any team (exception of Vandy) and put them on this schedule of Boise St and they are top 10 school year in and year out…This Boise St. claim is a joke..if Boise St. was really serious they would go the FSU route and play independently for a few years and go play the big boys on the road and then people would take them seriously….

The NC should be the two best teams of this year. If this Boise team played in even the ACC much less the SEC they would lose at least two. If they moved to SEC they could get SEC recruits but that would be another team and not this years team. If you were a coach and you had to plan for only two games a year, how much better would you be against those teams.

GT – 1st Place ACC Coastal, You are INSANE! I really hope you are another team’s fan poking fun at the reality challenged Tech fans on these boards. Nesbitt for Heisman? ACC Coastal the toughest division in football? HA HA HA HA HA HA!

I remember last year when the powerhouse ACC was decided in a real ‘clash of the titans’ championship game, pitting teams with–what was it–FIVE losses between them…playing in front of–What–15 or 20,000 people? Whooooweee…maybe they can recreate that kind of Magic again this year.

Tebow won the Heisman running more than passing. As much as it pains me to say it…he was a great player. If you think Nesbitt is as good as Tebow you are an idiot. Plus Tebow ran the ball in the SEC…Nesbitt runs it in the ACC. Big difference. If GT was in the SEC…Nesbitt would be injured by Game 5 (I know I know but GT only has to play FSU once!). If you can’t pass any better than 1-6 you lose in the SEC. The fact that GT is considered a front runner in the ACC makes me think the whole conference sucks.

Now that we have established the fact that the ACC is WAC-East, an undefeated WAC team should play for a NC before a 1 loss ACC team. This goes for any ACC team except Florida State. 1 loss Florida State should go through over undefeated Boise.

Let’s take it a bit further…can you imagine how BORING a NC game that GT plays in would be!?

Mussberger: “Wait didn’t we just see this play 2 plays ago?”

Herbstreit: “Yeah it is one of the 8 plays that they run.”

BOISE. We’ve allwatched this program grow over the pa 10 years. I saw Bois ply in the 2005 Liberty Bowl- in what then was the “NAQ BCS Game” Top-Ranked Lousivile vs Undefeated Boise. They’re fans traveled well to Memphis and they put on a great effort against a pretty good Lousiville team.

Fast foward 5 yrs later: they hae 2 BCS Fiesta Bow tropheys, wins over Oregon, VT, Oklahoma. If they’re TWO undefeaed teams left at the end at the season, and Boise is one of them…they ABSOLUTLY deserve a title shot.

If you can’t start a season with 120 teams in FBS having a chance to go undefeated and making it to the Championship Game, then what’s the point?

I say Boise should have the SAME chance to get to the final game (IF they go undefeated) as ‘Bama, Duke, Oklahoma, Air Force, VPI&SU, Ohio State, or Washington State.

If you say “no” to this logic, then LET’s QUIT THE CHARADE that is “FBS Football”!!!!

SPLIT the FBS into the “Have a Chance” group (Top 48-to-60 Schools) and the “Don’t Have a Chance” Divisions.

Maybe the “Don’t Have a Chance” Division can get their University Presidents to vote for a playoff in THAT division, and at least they’ll have an interesting end – with a DEFINED CHAMPION – to keep fan interest high and to give them some credibility. Let the “Have a Chance” division keep their POLITICS in place (i.e. BCS System) and continue with the subjective voting of who the “beauty contest winner” is every year.

You have to give Boise St. their due. Yeah, yeah, the got blown out by UGA years ago. But we all know that was before they were what they are now. Every test they have had over the past 5 seasons, they have passed. Oklahoma, Oregon, TCU, and now VaTech. They looked every bit as good as anyone I’ve watched so far. If they’re 12-0, give them a shot.

I could not agree more. They were fresh with no injuries and (supposedly) 6 months of preparedness. What would last night’s game have looked like if they had been in week 4 after a stretch of playing Alabama, Georgia, and Florida in a row? Saw em play, and MAYBE I would put them in if they were one of only two undefeateds. Based on what I saw, they’re very well coached and very poised, but between the first quarter and the end of the game (cuz you can’t play on emotion all 60 minutes) they were simply outmanned by a Va Tech team that’s got some talent but is still very rough around the edges. So I dunno. Wish they had a quality opponent at the end of the season to help make their case.

If SEC teams only had to get up for ONE big game a year- we would all go undefeated. As much as Boise wants to beleive they deserve a shot, the fact is if they played in a major conference week in and week out, they would not be unbeaten. Note to Boise: Join a big time conference or play a major non conference schedule both early and late in the year.

VT & Oregon St are BSU’s toughest opponents. Beat Oregon St (not by luck), and the table is set for BSU. IMO, the better team won last night. However, BSU can’t, and I mean CAN’T, have any wins like last night’s vs. ANY of its conf opponents.

To be in the NC game BSU must win all of its conf games by double-digits, and look impressive in each game. One last-minute, come from behind win, or an OT win vs a conf opponent will seriously hurt BSU’s NC chances.

No 12-0 Boise St should not go over a 12-1 SEC nor a 12-1 Big12 or 11-1 Big10 team.

The Boise St. schedule does warrant the BCS title game. The Chokies are 1 and what? against top 5 teams.

The ONLY significant games Boise State has won are against Oklahoma, TCU, and VTECH

What do they have in common?

1. Boise State had a loooong time to prepare

2. They were very close games with 2 pulled out in the last seconds or overtime

3. And most importantly they WERE ON NEUTRAL FIELDS!

I laugh hearing these talking heads build up Boise St…HAVE YOU ALL FORGOTTEN WHAT HAPPENED WHEN BOISE STATE HAD TO PLAY AT GEORGIA?!?!?

Georgia beat the same Zabransky lead Broncos who beat Oklahoma by 5 touchdowns!

Boise is a FRAUD! and until they start scheduling and winning true away games against teams like Georgia, Texas, Florida, Ohio St etc, THEY DO NOT BELONG IN THE CONVERSATION!

For crying out loud their biggest conference rival is Hawaii and what happened to an undefeated Hawaii team when they played Georgia?

Boise is a joke!

Boise should be in the MNC if they go undefeated. That is the way the system works and that is the way they play it. The Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl and the Orange Bowl will all teams that have at least one loss, but these games will be the best games to watch, instead of the MNC. The BCS is a political and slightly arbitrary title and should not mean anything to fans of the SEC or the Big 12(10).

Boise beats one preseason top 10 team, who could be vastly overrated for all we know, and they have ariived.

Boy, I wish it was that easy for my team. Unfortunately, my team has to play 4 or 5 games like that every single year, sometimes more and sometimes in back to back weeks.

We can speculate all we want about what Boise would or would not do playing a big boy BCS schedule, but we simply don’t know because they have never done it.

Personally, I think they would get their teeth kicked in. Kellen Moore looks like he’s in high school. He would get killed in the SEC, possibly literally.
