The Fearless Friday Forecast

Here, and not a moment too soon I might add,  is the first Fearless Friday Forecast for 2010:

1. Louisiana-Lafayette at Georgia: Georgia fans are looking for two things in the opener against the Ragin’ Cajuns from the Sun Belt Conference.  Both deal with reassurance. No. 1, does redshirt freshman Aaron Murray look like a college quarterback? No. 2,  will it be clear that the Georgia defense knows what it is doing? If the answer to both questions is yes, then there will optimism in the air when the Bulldog Nation leaves Sanford Stadium and starts thinking about that Sept. 11 trip to South Carolina. The Gamecocks certainly gave Georgia something to think about with the ease in which they dispatched Southern Miss (41-13) last night. Georgia 31, Louisiana-Lafayette 7.

2. S.C. State at Georgia Tech: There are no questions at quarterback, where senior Joshua Nesbitt returns. But there are questions on defense where Al Groh debuts as defensive coordinator. Now the Bulldogs from Orangeburg are no pushover, having won straight MEAC championships. But I think S.C. State quarterback Malcolm Long will see pressure from a lot of different places and he’ll find that tough to handle. Georgia Tech 35, S.C. State 10.

3. LSU vs. North Carolina (Georgia Dome): For an opening game, both teams arrive in Atlanta a little on the desperate side. North Carolina needs a win to change the subject from a couple of different NCAA investigations. The Tar Heels are expected to challenge in the ACC Coastal but those plans could be derailed if the NCAA finds academic misconduct. We know DT Marvin Austin and RB Greg Little won’t play. There could be a lot more who don’t suit up.  We could hear something on that today.

For a guy who is 51-15 with a national championship, Les Miles sure does hear his name and the words “hot seat” in the same sentence a lot. I picked North Carolina to win this game about a month ago but I sure can’t pick them now. Too many distractions. LSU 17, North Carolina 10.

4. Virginia Tech vs. Boise State (Monday, Landover, Md.): This is a huge opener for Boise State, which returns 21 of 22 starters from a 14-0 team. For if the Broncos, rated No. 5 in the preseason coaches poll, can find a way to beat the ACC favorite then they have a real shot of going undefeated and playing in a BCS bowl for the second consecutive year. Some believe the Broncos can make it all the way to the BCS championship game. I don’t think they can get out of FedEx field with a win. Virginia Tech 21, Boise State 20.

5. Kentucky at Louisville: A lot going on here. Former Florida defensive coordinator Charlie Strong has his debut as the head coach at Louisvillle. Ditto for Joker Phillips, the former Kentucky offensive coodinator who takes over for Rich Brooks. Both sides have a lot of talent on the offensive side of the ball. I think Kentucky has a little bit more with Randall Cobb and Derrick Locke. Kentucky 28, Louisville 24.

6. Miami (Ohio) at Florida: Life after Tim Tebow begins and John Brantley will be the man in the spotlight. The Redhawks from the MAC return every starter from a team that went 1-11 last season and won’t pose much of a threat in the Florida heat. But fans want to see Brantley run what will be a different Florida offense. They also want to see if the defense takes a step back after losing five NFL draft choices and defensive coordinator Charlie Strong. The Gators get South Florida at home next week. Florida 51, Miami (Ohio) 10.

7. Arkansas State at Auburn: Yet another quarterback in the SEC will make his debut. Cameron Newton won a JUCO national championship and then transferred to Auburn. He has all the physical gifts (6-6, 243) you could ask for in a quarterback and should shine in Gus Malzahn’s offense. This game is about getting ready for a short turnaround and playing at Mississippi State on Sept. 9. Auburn 31, Arkansas State 10.

8.  San Jose State at Alabama: The Crimson Tide begins the pursuit of its second straight national championship and over 100,000 will turn out at newly-enlarged Bryant Denny Stadium. This game will be a continuation of the celebration that begin last January in Pasadena. Then it will be all business as Alabama gets ready to host Joe Paterno and Penn State on Sept. 11. It will be interesting to see how many times QB Greg McElroy throws the ball down the field to a healthy Julio Jones. Alabama will be without DE Marcell Dareus, who has been suspended for two games by the NCAA . Alabama 45, San Joe State 7.

9. Tennessee-Martin at Tennessee: Derek Dooley, son of Barbara and Vince, makes his debut as the head football coach of the Volunteers. Since Dooley became coach in January he has preached patience and building for the long haul. With a bunch of freshmen on the offensive line and not much experience anywhere else, for that matter, Dooley needs to give the Volunteer faithful some reason to hope. Tennessee may not be a talented team, but they need to look well coached against an overmatched foe, particularly with Oregon coming to Knoxville next week. Tennessee 31, UT-Martin 3.

10. Samford at Florida State: For the first time since 1976 Florida State will play a football game with somebody other than Bobby Bowden as head coach. Jimbo Fisher makes his debut and the Seminoles fans also want some reason to believe that things are going to be better sooner rather than later. I’m keeping an eye on this game to see what kind of start QB Christian Ponder has. This guy is capable of winning the Heisman Trophy, especially playing behind a veteran offensive line. Florida State 42, Samford 17.

Fearless, huh? Wow….just wow. Those were some pretty damn easy picks. I can see picking all the SEC games but wait ’til next week to do that. Then adding FSU and Furman?

SC State is no pushover? Maybe at their level but look at what has happened when they played DI schools. I want to say they average giving up 62 points a game. Please.

You don’t think Boise can get out of there with a win yet you have them losing by 1. Seems you do think they could win this game.

Give us something, man.

South Carolina has some serious athletes I saw last night. As neither a UGA or Tech fan (in other words objective), I seriously doubt UGA can go into Columbia next week and win.

Question to Dawgs: how mad will you be if you lose to them even if this is a much better South Carolina team than usual?

Florida’s offense will be better this year…They will get back to using all that speed instead of running their QB off-tackle for four yards.

FWIW, I think we beat LaL something more like 44-10.

On a side note, UT will be horrible and very lucky to win 5, UGA will not be one of them.

SC looked good but shouldn’t they, considering who they played?

JWalker – I for one am not happy that SC has seemingly found a running game, it is the main thing Spurrier has been missing since he got there… So now he is dangerous.

But, I don’t doubt UGA can go into Columbia next week and win. Its usually pretty close so it could go either way. But my logic here is simple. SC has no film to watch on georgias defense yet, they will get some tomorrow and I fully expect that to be very vanilla.

To answer your question: Not mad, disapointed, and mindful of Ark the next week. At best win both, At worst loose both, at least split them.

JWalker, Dawgs will not be mad at all if SC really is ‘all that’ and wins. I mean, better them go to the SEC CG then Florida. ;-)

Most of those players on the Southern Miss team, and I said most, would be one and two star players on the Bama,Auburn, Fla., UGA etc recruiting board. With that said, Southern plays their “type” opponents well…….Carolina is above that pay grade of player. Now, don’t get me wrong, Southern is Athletic and plays pretty good football, but not SEC type football. Yes, Carolina looked pretty good, but anyone who gets on here and say’s Georgia will lose WITH OUT HAVEN SEEN US PLAY is just a hater. I’ll take our chances. Grantham has prooved himself at teh highest level! He has been a defensive coordinator in the NFL and a defensive coach with the Cowboys…it doesn’t get much higher than that BUT if that weren’t enough Nick Saban had Grantham come in and help his coaches and players learn/work on the 3-4 defense before last season at Bama

Mutt Nonsense

The difference is that UGA actually wins stuff….SEC titles, National titles, division titles etc….SCAR has NEVER even won the SEC!!!!!!

Tony,

Let me say again, all supporters of teams from a real conference (SEC, ACC, BIG 10, BIG 12) need to pull for VA Tech to wipe the field with BS University. Should BS win this one, it’s a cake walk to an underserved crack at the NC in Jan. VA Tech needs to put a whipping on BS and make them go away for a couple of years, like UGA did several years ago.

Ditto with Oregon St taking out TCU. TCU has nearly an easy a ride after this week as BS does. Being ranked as high as they are, TCU could end up in the NC if several things go their way during the season.

South Carolina really didnt have much of a running game last night. Lattimore had 11 rushes for 54 yards. not much of an average really.
They had 38 yards by the qb. They had 53 yards on one play by one back. The rest was mop up duty.
I dont see that freshman back doing to much against georgia.
South Carolina will get more yards from Garcia next week than any back. But he will be hit in the head by our flying defense when he does.
Georgia wins against south carolina in a typical showdown.

Grantham hasnt proven anything yet. Just because he has been in the NFL doesnt mean crap to me. If he was all that I think he would have been more than just a line coach for Dallas. His time at Cleveland wasnt all that great to land him another job at D-coordinator at that level and he was not first choice as our D-coordinator

But I hope he is what we need on Defense, the jury is out and we will know by the end of next season until them I will wait and see.

But I sure have not seen our offense used to its potential in 9 yrs, especially when we had Stafford, Moreno, Maseqoui, and Green on the same team, and look abismal against, FL, Alabama, and GT.

The point is wait and see dont get all jacked up like all the typical UGA fans do and look stupid year after year and rely on 1980. For one Im tired of hearing about that and Im tired of losing to FL every year when we have put more players since 1999 than FL has and cannot beat them.

Oh Richt beat them twice, whatever, once when Zook was fired the week before, and 2 when FL had nothing but freshmen and sophomores. Who cares, the talent is on the field we just havent been coached and if you dont believe me take a look at film and watch our practices for the past years and then watch a Saban practice and you will see why. Fundamentals, Fundamentals, are taught constantly.

Man, why does every blog here turn into a name calling contest? Can’t rational points be made without all of the trivial bickering? Personally, I though South carolina looked really good last night albeit against inferior talent. One thing that needs to be noted was how smart Garcia played with the ball. He did not make his usual forced throws and fumbles. If that continues, USC will be a force to be reckoned with.

Unfortunately, Boise State IS for real. They were undefeated last year and beat Oregon (the Pac 12 Champ and top 20 team last year) in their first game. I just wish they were playing a competitive schedule the rest of the season so they can be more accurately ranked.

It’s just 1 game but USCe looks for real. SOS is back to calling plays this year. It’ll be interesting to see the point spread early next week.

I think UGA tries to keep it as vanilla as possible Saturday – possibly not covering the spread. Same for UF. I think UF will try to be basic their first 4 games, waiting until the Bama game to reveal their real identity post-Tebow.

Nice to finally have the season underway.

Grantham should know. He has been an assistant in the NFL since 1999, working for many of the best 3-4 gurus in the game.

“I worked for Wade [Phillips with the Cowboys] and Dom [Capers with the Texans],” Grantham says. “I also worked [as defensive coordinator of the Browns] for Romeo Crennel, who was a [Bill] Belichick disciple. What most fans don’t realize (or choose to ignore) is that coaches conduct and visit coaching clinics all off-season. For instance, last year Oklahoma coaches, including Stoops, went to BAMA to learn how Saban organizes and runs his practices. Likewise, I’m sure Kirby and McElwain visit other programs to observe, teach, and be taught.

Are we really going to do this again regarding South Carolina? Every year they get off to a good start by beating some team that they should beat. Last year was the defenisve struggle against NC State, the year beofre that they throttled the wolfpack. Each year the same thing. USC is suddenly the team to beat. If they actually go through a whole season beating people they shouldn’t beat then I will buy into the hype but for now it’s just the same old thing. Actually, I wanted them to beat up on So Miss so they can be feeling real good about themselves against Georgia. Seems to work out well for UGA every time it happens. When will you guys learn?

5IML, while coaches regularly talk and visit each other to learn new wrinkles, we should probably acknowledge Todd Grantham as the father of the 3-4 defense. I understand he taught it to Bud Wilkinson and advised Don Shula on implementing it for his Miami Dolphins ‘72 Super Bowl winning team. So glad football is here. Really enjoyed the game last night and was impressed with USC. Not saying they’re world beaters or anything, but they will absolutely ruin someone’s season. I can see them beating either UF or UGA this year, but probably not both. The competition wasn’t the best, obviously, but one thing I noticed was that Spurrier now believes he has some players. Whether it’s true or not, him thinking they are talented will go a long way in helping that team develop. Next week’s game will be fun for me to watch as a Gator, and I suspect it will be a three team race for the east this year, with any of the 3 teams being able to beat the others. My fear is the three way tie in terms of the east record with the west games being the tiebreaker. UF’s west schedule this year is not the most pleasant. If it comes down to that, give UGA the edge.

Give me a source other than Delusional Dawgs repeating each other on sport talk radio “coach smith”. Alabama’s 2008 defense was #2 in the country in rush defense, tied for #3 in total defense, #7 in points allowed and Saban needed to bring in a defensive line coach who used to be an assistant to him to “coach up the defense” at Alabama?

If Grantham is that good, why didn’t Saban let Mark Richt hire away Kirby Smart and then hire Grantham to replace him? Why did Richt only turn to Grantham after Smart and 2 others turned down the job?

DP,

Richt wasn’t calling the shots on the hire. Evans was. He made Richt go after the “name” candidates like Chavis, Smart and Muschamp because that is what Evans told him to do.

Richt wanted Grantham all along but had to appease the AD while waiting on Dallas’s season to end.

Saban wants Smart because he can make him the figurehead as DC while Saban runs the defense behind the scenes and doesn’t allow Kirby to pass gas without letting him smell it first.

Muschamp is the head coach in waiting at Texas to the tune of about 5 times what a DC makes. Chavis just wanted a raise.

Welcome back, sports fans.

My comments in response to Tony’s predictions:

1. Yawn. Georgia. My graduate degree programs didn’t teach me to count that high.

2. Yawn. Georgia Tech. Ditto.

3. LSU by only 7 over UNC? Tony, did you write this column before they announced 12 Tar Heel players have been declared ineligible? The Tigers may have some issues, but I expect this will be a 2 or 3 touchdown win by LSU.

4. Tony’s predicted score, 21-20, I accept, but I expect Boise State to beat Virginia Tech.

5. Kentucky over Louisville by 4? Sounds about right.

6. Florida vs. Miami University (i.e. “Miami of Ohio”)? Last time these teams met, it was the 1973 Tangerine Bowl, Doug Dickey was the Gators’ coach, the Miami Redhawks were still called the Miami Redskins, and Miami won 16-7. Times have changed. This game will be a lot like Custer’s-last-stand-in-reverse, by more scalped bodies . . . er, points, than I can count. And, no, I will not watch: it’s another Gators preseason game and the Atlanta weather is predicted to be beautiful this Labor Day weekend.

7. Auburn. Yawn. Gene Chizik and his Tigers gain some self-esteem by beating the crap out of the Little Sisters of the Poor.

8. Alabama. Yawn. See Auburn comments, but unfortunately for “San Joe State,” the Crimson Tide already has plenty of self-esteem. Bring on the Christians; the lions are hungry.

9. Tennessee (Knoxville). Yawn. See Auburn comments.

10. Florida State in the Bowden Alumni Bowl. Yawn.

Good luck to all the teams for whom you cheer, and may the best teams win. (They usually do.)

He couldn’t have possibly meant Adams because everyone knows Adams has messed up everything at that fine, storied university. I mean, he won’t let them trash their entire north campus every Saturday for crying out loud. And if he did mean Damon, then we all know unequivocably that he’s a puppet too and that Adams is the worst thing that’s happened to UGA. I mean, if it wasn’t for Adams: (1) Dooley would still be there, (2) UGA would have multiple national championships (that wouldn’t be mythical anymore, because it’s real once UGA wins it), (3) there’d be an award, trophy, and fan payout for most 10 win seasons, and finally (4) the rest of the SEC would run and hide from the big bad Junkyard Dawgs.

Then CMR went through the charade of trying to hire those proven guys, who he would’ve been disappointed to land, and is now secretly overjoyed that he ‘got his man’ FOUR names down the list.

Great to see Atlanta Gator back today. Not much to say about the opening weekend’s games. A smattering of good games with most of us starting out the season with a bunch of yawners.

Seems the biggest news is mostly about what’s opening off the field and not on it.

1) UNC having all those players suspended means what would have been a great game may turn into a rout.

2) Yet another Georgia player about to be arrested? Not to pile on the dawgs but does this ever end? Dawg fans have just got to be sick of this stuff.

3) Marcel Dareus-2 game suspension. I’m glad the NCAA said he is one of the most truthful student athletes they’ve ever dealt with. Unfortunately it doesn’t help us that he will miss the all important Penn State game in week 2. Such is life.

4) Todd Grantham- Could perceptions not be any more different about this guy? Other fans point to his failure at his only shot as a Cleveland D-coordinator-30th out of 32 teams in 2 years and his subsequent demotion as a position coach, his well documented status as Richt’s 4th or 5th choice, etc.

To hear dawg fans tell it Saban tried to hire Grantham numerous times and a couple of dawg posters even insist that Grantham comes over and teaches the 3-4 D to bama players during the spring and the offseason. Saban did in fact try to hire him several years ago when he went to the dolphins and Saban did in fact hire him to come in and help run some football clinics during the offseason. But then he hires a lot of coaches to come in and do football clinics for the benefit of camps and high school coaches.

The truth about Grantham is somewhere in between. He’s not the all world in demand D-coordinator that some dawg fans think he is. But he aint chopped liver either. He does know the 3-4 and his previous failure in the NFL is irrelevant. Overall there should be a lot of defensive improvement for the dawgs under Grantham. Put another way could his defenses possibly be any worse than Martinez defenses? Hell no. Dawgs will certainly be better on D. How much better we’ll all know as the season plays out and from what Carolina showed last night he’s got his work cut out for him one week from tomorrow.

5IML,

While passing through Birmingham last December, my wife and I were sitting at a bar at a fine restaurant and up walks Beamer. He spoke to us for at least 15 minutes as we were watching a bowl game. Very nice and classy guy. Had good things to say about “Nick” as he called him.

I always thought beamer was one of the classy guys in college football. Last year when lane Kiffin gave him that pathetically weak azz crybaby joke of a handshake after the beating in the bowl game beamer had the decency to not say anything about it. He’s one of the good guys in college football.

2009 Stats from Boise State vs Oregon Ducks game

BS: 361 Tot Yds / 164 Rushing / 194 Passing
UO: 152 Tot Yds / 31 Rushing / 121 Passing

BS: Tot Offensive Plays: 89
UO: Tot Offensive Plays: 44

BS: 3 Fumbles Lost; No INTs
UO: No Fumbles Lost; 1 INT

Folks, BoiseSt kicked their azz. Solidly.

UO, with Jeremiah Masoli at QB, went 10-2 with losses
to BoiseSt and Stanford. UO was the 2009 the Pac-10 Champ,
and went to the Rose Bowl and lost to Ohio State by 9.

BoiseSt has ALL but 1 of their 2009 starters back for 2010.

VT lost 3 starters on the O-Line, and 8 starters on Defense.

Anyone who think VT somehow just gonna blow BoiseSt
right off the field are crazy.

BoiseSt is good. VT has historically struggled early season.

Prediction:

BoiseSt:35
VT:32

A Late or Missed FG at the end will win this for BoiseSt.

This is almost a home game for Vt.
VT is MUCH more physical than Oregon.
Please don’t pin your hopes on the fact that Oregon lost to boise and Oregon played Ohio freaking state close.

I dont think the game being played in DC matters at all.

I also dont think VT is more physical than BSt.

Part of my point is that even with Masoli at QB
and a Middle-weght boxing champ at RB, UO still lost.

I’ll stick with:

BST: 35
VT: 32

Boise is bigger and stronger than in years past. I was watching them destroy Oregon last year and the commentator was making note of the fact that on the D-line Boise had 2 SEC caliber D tackles. Both were like 6′4 300 lb ers with speed. Their success in previous years has allowed them to gradually get bigger, stronger, faster athletes.

I think they whip VT. VT lost 7 defensive starters on a D that I was quite frankly very unimpressed with last year. We had 8 new starters on our O last year and rolled the VT defense for 500 yards. I think Boise does the same.

As for VT’s offense if Boise rolled dual threat qb Masoli last year then I expect them to do the same against VT and Tyrod Taylor. Taylor is just another overhyped dual threat qb who will never fully beat someone with his arm. Aint gonna happen.

5IML,

That does sound kinda weird to have houndstooths all over the numbers and the white stripe on the helmet. Still I’m just kind of excited to see something a little different. The crimson striping on the side of the pants will also be slightly different.

Mike Uga,

That Boise team that UGA swamped was also the only bad Boise team of the last decade and that game was several years ago. They lost 4 games that year playing in a terrible conference. There’s no question they play in a joke of a conference and have the easiest path to a bcs bowl game of anybody. But they are still a solid team this year and if they played UGA there are few people outside of Georgia who would have the dawgs favored in that game. Would Boise go unbeaten in the SEC? HELL NO. But they would still win anywhere from 8-10 games this year if they did play in the SEC.

Boise State, Va Tech will be the best match up. It is a shame UNC has all those problems, that would have been a good test of how far the ACC has come with Butch Davis being one of several really good coaches there. I can understand the agent mess but how do you get in trouble tutoring football players. Hell normal people at UNC need tutoring why not football players? If those players are not back it makes Ga Tech’s path a little clearer to be a top ten team finisher. That is why the game with Boise State and Va. Tech has weight. We can see really how good Va. Tech is. The other interesting team will be FSU. I am thinking that old man coach got soft in his old age, he sure got fat, but FSU is a bit like Georgia. Lots of under used talent. If this new coaching staff puts it together FSU may be back which is not good new for the Jackets.

Fla had 25 total yards of offense going into the 4th qtr against Miami of Ohio. Miami had 16 1st downs and UF 12. Total yardage was dead even at 212. Florida is in trouble.

As a dawg fan I’m going to be giddy when I watch Bama destroy Florida in a month. Then I’m going to be even giddier when a more confident dawg team then whips the gators a couple weeks after Bammer does.
