The Fearless Friday Forecast

Here, and not a moment too soon I might add,  is the first Fearless Friday Forecast for 2010:

1. Louisiana-Lafayette at Georgia: Georgia fans are looking for two things in the opener against the Ragin’ Cajuns from the Sun Belt Conference.  Both deal with reassurance. No. 1, does redshirt freshman Aaron Murray look like a college quarterback? No. 2,  will it be clear that the Georgia defense knows what it is doing? If the answer to both questions is yes, then there will optimism in the air when the Bulldog Nation leaves Sanford Stadium and starts thinking about that Sept. 11 trip to South Carolina. The Gamecocks certainly gave Georgia something to think about with the ease in which they dispatched Southern Miss (41-13) last night. Georgia 31, Louisiana-Lafayette 7.

2. S.C. State at Georgia Tech: There are no questions at quarterback, where senior Joshua Nesbitt returns. But there are questions on defense where Al Groh debuts as defensive coordinator. Now the Bulldogs from Orangeburg are no pushover, having won straight MEAC championships. But I think S.C. State quarterback Malcolm Long will see pressure from a lot of different places and he’ll find that tough to handle. Georgia Tech 35, S.C. State 10.

3. LSU vs. North Carolina (Georgia Dome): For an opening game, both teams arrive in Atlanta a little on the desperate side. North Carolina needs a win to change the subject from a couple of different NCAA investigations. The Tar Heels are expected to challenge in the ACC Coastal but those plans could be derailed if the NCAA finds academic misconduct. We know DT Marvin Austin and RB Greg Little won’t play. There could be a lot more who don’t suit up.  We could hear something on that today.

For a guy who is 51-15 with a national championship, Les Miles sure does hear his name and the words “hot seat” in the same sentence a lot. I picked North Carolina to win this game about a month ago but I sure can’t pick them now. Too many distractions. LSU 17, North Carolina 10.

4. Virginia Tech vs. Boise State (Monday, Landover, Md.): This is a huge opener for Boise State, which returns 21 of 22 starters from a 14-0 team. For if the Broncos, rated No. 5 in the preseason coaches poll, can find a way to beat the ACC favorite then they have a real shot of going undefeated and playing in a BCS bowl for the second consecutive year. Some believe the Broncos can make it all the way to the BCS championship game. I don’t think they can get out of FedEx field with a win. Virginia Tech 21, Boise State 20.

5. Kentucky at Louisville: A lot going on here. Former Florida defensive coordinator Charlie Strong has his debut as the head coach at Louisvillle. Ditto for Joker Phillips, the former Kentucky offensive coodinator who takes over for Rich Brooks. Both sides have a lot of talent on the offensive side of the ball. I think Kentucky has a little bit more with Randall Cobb and Derrick Locke. Kentucky 28, Louisville 24.

6. Miami (Ohio) at Florida: Life after Tim Tebow begins and John Brantley will be the man in the spotlight. The Redhawks from the MAC return every starter from a team that went 1-11 last season and won’t pose much of a threat in the Florida heat. But fans want to see Brantley run what will be a different Florida offense. They also want to see if the defense takes a step back after losing five NFL draft choices and defensive coordinator Charlie Strong. The Gators get South Florida at home next week. Florida 51, Miami (Ohio) 10.

7. Arkansas State at Auburn: Yet another quarterback in the SEC will make his debut. Cameron Newton won a JUCO national championship and then transferred to Auburn. He has all the physical gifts (6-6, 243) you could ask for in a quarterback and should shine in Gus Malzahn’s offense. This game is about getting ready for a short turnaround and playing at Mississippi State on Sept. 9. Auburn 31, Arkansas State 10.

8.  San Jose State at Alabama: The Crimson Tide begins the pursuit of its second straight national championship and over 100,000 will turn out at newly-enlarged Bryant Denny Stadium. This game will be a continuation of the celebration that begin last January in Pasadena. Then it will be all business as Alabama gets ready to host Joe Paterno and Penn State on Sept. 11. It will be interesting to see how many times QB Greg McElroy throws the ball down the field to a healthy Julio Jones. Alabama will be without DE Marcell Dareus, who has been suspended for two games by the NCAA . Alabama 45, San Joe State 7.

9. Tennessee-Martin at Tennessee: Derek Dooley, son of Barbara and Vince, makes his debut as the head football coach of the Volunteers. Since Dooley became coach in January he has preached patience and building for the long haul. With a bunch of freshmen on the offensive line and not much experience anywhere else, for that matter, Dooley needs to give the Volunteer faithful some reason to hope. Tennessee may not be a talented team, but they need to look well coached against an overmatched foe, particularly with Oregon coming to Knoxville next week. Tennessee 31, UT-Martin 3.

10. Samford at Florida State: For the first time since 1976 Florida State will play a football game with somebody other than Bobby Bowden as head coach. Jimbo Fisher makes his debut and the Seminoles fans also want some reason to believe that things are going to be better sooner rather than later. I’m keeping an eye on this game to see what kind of start QB Christian Ponder has. This guy is capable of winning the Heisman Trophy, especially playing behind a veteran offensive line. Florida State 42, Samford 17.

I always thought beamer was one of the classy guys in college football. Last year when lane Kiffin gave him that pathetically weak azz crybaby joke of a handshake after the beating in the bowl game beamer had the decency to not say anything about it. He’s one of the good guys in college football.

2009 Stats from Boise State vs Oregon Ducks game

BS: 361 Tot Yds / 164 Rushing / 194 Passing
UO: 152 Tot Yds / 31 Rushing / 121 Passing

BS: Tot Offensive Plays: 89
UO: Tot Offensive Plays: 44

BS: 3 Fumbles Lost; No INTs
UO: No Fumbles Lost; 1 INT

Folks, BoiseSt kicked their azz. Solidly.

UO, with Jeremiah Masoli at QB, went 10-2 with losses
to BoiseSt and Stanford. UO was the 2009 the Pac-10 Champ,
and went to the Rose Bowl and lost to Ohio State by 9.

BoiseSt has ALL but 1 of their 2009 starters back for 2010.

VT lost 3 starters on the O-Line, and 8 starters on Defense.

Anyone who think VT somehow just gonna blow BoiseSt
right off the field are crazy.

BoiseSt is good. VT has historically struggled early season.

Prediction:

BoiseSt:35
VT:32

A Late or Missed FG at the end will win this for BoiseSt.

T3,

This is almost a home game for Vt.
VT is MUCH more physical than Oregon.
Please don’t pin your hopes on the fact that Oregon lost to boise and Oregon played Ohio freaking state close.

38-24 VT

I dont think the game being played in DC matters at all.

I also dont think VT is more physical than BSt.

Part of my point is that even with Masoli at QB
and a Middle-weght boxing champ at RB, UO still lost.

I’ll stick with:

BST: 35
VT: 32

Add DragonCon to the looooong list of excuses that the tech nerds will give to explain why they can’t even out-draw GEORGIA STATE! State’s fans don’t even understand football (I heard they got really loud when their team were 3rd and short in the red zone!), but at least they show up! Keep the excuses coming, honey bees!!!

Boise is bigger and stronger than in years past. I was watching them destroy Oregon last year and the commentator was making note of the fact that on the D-line Boise had 2 SEC caliber D tackles. Both were like 6′4 300 lb ers with speed. Their success in previous years has allowed them to gradually get bigger, stronger, faster athletes.

I think they whip VT. VT lost 7 defensive starters on a D that I was quite frankly very unimpressed with last year. We had 8 new starters on our O last year and rolled the VT defense for 500 yards. I think Boise does the same.

As for VT’s offense if Boise rolled dual threat qb Masoli last year then I expect them to do the same against VT and Tyrod Taylor. Taylor is just another overhyped dual threat qb who will never fully beat someone with his arm. Aint gonna happen.

Just heard about the UNC players not making the game against LSU. Miles better drop the hammer on them or he’ll start hearing the grumblings. Sounds like he’ll be playing against the second string defense. LSU should win by 17-20 points. Defense was the strength of UNC…..WAS!

5IML,

That does sound kinda weird to have houndstooths all over the numbers and the white stripe on the helmet. Still I’m just kind of excited to see something a little different. The crimson striping on the side of the pants will also be slightly different.

Mike Uga,

That Boise team that UGA swamped was also the only bad Boise team of the last decade and that game was several years ago. They lost 4 games that year playing in a terrible conference. There’s no question they play in a joke of a conference and have the easiest path to a bcs bowl game of anybody. But they are still a solid team this year and if they played UGA there are few people outside of Georgia who would have the dawgs favored in that game. Would Boise go unbeaten in the SEC? HELL NO. But they would still win anywhere from 8-10 games this year if they did play in the SEC.

Did someone say 3 horse race in the East? As a non-SEC fan (as in I’m a fan of a team outside of the SEC), I can only conclude that they must be referring to the AL East, because UF owns the SEC East. There may be a 2 horse race for distant 2nd place though.

Boise State, Va Tech will be the best match up. It is a shame UNC has all those problems, that would have been a good test of how far the ACC has come with Butch Davis being one of several really good coaches there. I can understand the agent mess but how do you get in trouble tutoring football players. Hell normal people at UNC need tutoring why not football players? If those players are not back it makes Ga Tech’s path a little clearer to be a top ten team finisher. That is why the game with Boise State and Va. Tech has weight. We can see really how good Va. Tech is. The other interesting team will be FSU. I am thinking that old man coach got soft in his old age, he sure got fat, but FSU is a bit like Georgia. Lots of under used talent. If this new coaching staff puts it together FSU may be back which is not good new for the Jackets.

Fla had 25 total yards of offense going into the 4th qtr against Miami of Ohio. Miami had 16 1st downs and UF 12. Total yardage was dead even at 212. Florida is in trouble.

As a dawg fan I’m going to be giddy when I watch Bama destroy Florida in a month. Then I’m going to be even giddier when a more confident dawg team then whips the gators a couple weeks after Bammer does.
