Will South Carolina struggle with Southern Miss?

Five burning questions as we head into the first weekend of the regular season:

1. Will South Carolina struggle with Southern Mississippi tonight? For a couple of weeks now nobody has been talking about what’s going to happen on the field when the Gamecocks finally play a game. Thanks to a couple of NCAA investigations, nobody knows exactly who is going to show up tonight at Williams-Brice Stadium against a team that could win its division of Conference USA.  The exception to that is tight end Weslye Saunders, who has already been suspended. It’s hard to believe that this is the first time these two teams have ever met. South Carolina needs to get off to a good start because Georgia comes to Columbia on Sept. 11. We also want to know if Steve Spurrier will have a quick hook when it comes to quarterback Stephen Garcia. Freshman Conner Shaw (from Flowery Branch) is waiting in the wings.

2. Who’s going to show up for North Carolina against LSU? We know that defensive tackle Marvin Austin, one of at least five NFL draft choices on the North Carolina defense, will not be in the lineup when the Tar Heels meet LSU in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff at the Georgia Dome. In fact, I don’t think we’ll see old Marvin again in a college football uniform.  But there are a bunch of other guys who are involved in a potential academic issue and if the NCAA doesn’t clear them by Saturday then they will not play. This was supposed to be the breakout season for Butch Davis at North Carolina. LSU and coach Les Miles need a win because then the Tigers have a good chance to be 5-0 when they go to Florida on Oct. 9.

3. How will Houston Nutt use his quarterbacks against Jacksonville State?  Now that Jeremiah Masoli is out of the mix, Nutt has to be careful how he uses Nathan Stanley, who won the job coming out of spring practice. He can’t afford for Stanley to get hurt or Ole Miss is in real big trouble. JUCO transfer Randall Mackey, who probably didn’t take a whole lot of snaps in August, has to get in the game. Four of the first five games are at home and the one road game in that stretch is Tulane. Ole Miss must have two quarterbacks ready to play by the time it goes to Alabama on Oct. 16.

4.  How much of Aaron Murray will Mark Richt show against Louisiana-Lafayette? The No. 1 objective in Georgia’s opener with Louisiana-Lafayette is to win and keep quarterback Aaron Murray healthy. But Richt and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo also have to get the redshirt freshman ready for next week’s huge trip to Columbia and the South Carolina Gamecocks. You wonder if Richt will turn Murray loose or if he’ll hold something back so that Ellis Johnson (the South Carolina DC) won’t see it on tape.

5. How will Tennessee fans feel after Derek Dooley’s debut? Tennessee will certainly win Saturday’s game against UT-Martin. But all summer long Volunteer fans have been hearing how tough a year this is going to be as Dooley tries to clean up the mess left behind by the Boy Wonder, now at Southern California. With Oregon, the defending Pac-10 champ, coming to Neyland Stadium next week, will Tennessee fans feel better about things or worse about things after they see Dooley’s first Volunteer team in action? It will be interesting to hear the talk shows and the read the blogs on Sunday morning.

As you know, Tony, a heck of a lot of teams in the SEC have struggled with USoMiss over the years, especially while Bowers was coach. It was a mystery how SoMiss performed so well every year or so against Bama, Aubie, TN and even Gators –but they did, and yes, then usually went on to crushing defeats elsewhere in the SEC. You can’t overprepare for teams like SoMiss, E.Carolina. They see the Big Guys as there shot at glory and do get some talented players year after year.

1….South Carolina should win by 10-14 points.
2….Looks like UNC is going to playing with about a dozen less than expected. Could Butch use it as motivation? Nah, look for LSU to take care of business.
3….Nutt doesn’t mind losing. He’s in the “people helping business”. LOL!
4….Louisiana-Lafayette will pull the upset! You heard it here first. Mark it down, etc. LOL!!!!!! Seriously, UGA wins this one walking away and Murray should do fine in his debut.
5….I think most UT fans are more than ready to just talk football after the off-season they’ve had to endure. They all know that Dooley will need at least 3 years to show what he’s got.

Who’s going to show up for Ga Sc Tony? Why do you leave that out? AJ status? Ealey?

A player last year got suspended one game for driving a moped on a suspended. Ealey gave coaches and the law the finger and blew off court. He broke his word and drove another car…def not insured for that other person either. Hits a car and flees all with a susp license! Yes nice judgement!! So how many games should he be out tony? Certainly if just driving on a susp warrants a one game, then you must add on for the way worse things ealey has done. But ahh richt is a joke right. There’s a reason why these players continue to keep getting arrested. Cause the punishment doesn’t fit the crime. Slap on the wrist! Can’t wait to see what happens with the redneck team in athens.

I fully expect Ealy to walk on most of the “crimes” (as you call them) – first, he broke no law by driving in a parking lot, so that charge of driving with a suspended license will be dropped.

Now, the leaving the scene after damaging property will stick, but once restitution is made that will be over. So, yes, being suspended for one game for being STUPID does reek of the the punishment fitting the “crime”…slap on the wrist for being STUPID is right…

Richt is giving a game suspension for underage possession, which appears to be unheard of. Urban and Brian Kelly both had multiple arrests for the same infraction, but are dealing with it “in-house.”

I suspect one reason some of these posters on here are urging more game suspensions for UGA players is that the last thing their favorite team wants is to face the Dogs at full strength.

1.) SC will win but it will be a ballgame until the fourth quarter. 1st game, decent opponent. 24-14 SC
2.) UNC is in trouble. Miles is desperate and has recruited very well.
3.) Ole Miss and Nutt will part ways by year end. They are in BIG trouble and may not win more than 1 SEC game.
4.) I want 63-10 UGA but will settle for 35-0. I don’t care what UGA “shows” spurrier. Just win, limit penalties, no turnovers, force 4 TO’s and get 9 sacks.
5.) UT will win big. I hope the UT folks are patient with DD like they say they are going to be but I doubt it. There is a segment of every fanbase in the SEC that doesn’t understand enough about building a program. They will want Derek thrown under the bus by year end. Hopefully, cooler heads will prevail.

Hey Tony:

I can’t believe you overlooked the single most important game taking place the opening week of college football … Georgia State vs Shorter University in the Georgia Dome! This is basically a AAA high school team going against a AA high school team. 90 year old Bill Curry takes on a Southern Baptist high school in his latest coaching debut. The funny thing about this is Georgia State will probably draw a bigger crowd than Georgia Tech. Within 5 years, Georgia State will be the dominant football team in Atlanta and the bees will be looking to schedule Shorter in order to find somebody they can beat. HAHAHAHa

Houston Nutt deserves to be fired. He needs a JUCO transfer to be his backup QB and a Oregon dump to be his 3rd string? well, actually he wants Masoli to be his starting QB, which was denied by NCAA.

Isn’t this his 3rd year with Ole Miss? you don’t even have enough players in your 3rd year? This just shows you you’d rather to be lucky to have a good job than your capability can afford you. I am not sure who is the AD that hired this guy. That AD should be fired.

Tennessee fans have 0 expectations. My opinion is that they will end up being about the same as last year, lose one they should win and maybe pick off a few that they shouldn’t. No one disputes that the team is young, but the coaches really like some of the young talent that they have. I wouldn’t expect a championship in 2011, but they will be back to being a team that will compete in everygame.

SCs D is supposed to be very strong–we will see tonight. I would force Murray to win the game through the air. If he throws it 40 times, it will be like getting two games of experience for the price of one. The pressure will be very good for his development. The coaches know exactly what they have on the ground. Also, it will loosen up the opponents defensive plans. Murray needs to go deep a good bit imo. The biggest question for me is if Boise State can beat V Tech–they don’t have much else on their schedule and they are already rated number 3.

I heard Nutt on ESPN this morning saying he wished everybody could know this wonderful kid Masoli and he’d done everything asked of him…..since he’s been at Ole Miss. Wow, he hasn’t been caught robbing anybody or with drugs in his possession in a whole month!

couldn’t agree more about Boise State’s ranking. I’d go further and say that no team (in 2010) deserves a ranking. None have played a snap.

I’d like to see a system that projects a set of “Brackets”. In other words, a given team starts in the Top 25 bracket, another team in the 26-50 Bracket and so on. How your team does on a weekly basis determines the bracket in which they reside. After the first six weeks of the season, let the first polls come out…..and let the arguments began.

Preseason polls are biased and unfair.

The “chess match” that Spurrier & Richt will play this weekend should tell us alot about next weekend’s game in Columbia.

I kind of expect to see Spurrier keep the “wraps” on what he has in mind for next weekend. Short yard passing, and run the ball. Low profile.

Kind of expect to see Richt run the ball for 2 Qtrs to get a comfortable lead, and then “un-wrap” the passing game in the second half. Probably for short yardage, screens, and curl routes. Got to get Murray in a rythmn and test the pass protection. Maybe only 2-3 deep shots down the field the whole game.

If Spurrier plays it extremely close to the vest tonight, I will take that as a sign of a high degree of confidence going into next weekend.

From Richts press conference yesterday, he seems very worried.
I expect to see Richt use almost everything on Ulala, not really to win, but to test out what he’s got to work with.

USC will win next weekend.

As for LSU-UNC, All of Saban’s 2007 BCS-NC talent is gone now,
and LSU was awful last year and still has issues.

If UNC can get to Atlanta with only 2-3 suspensions, I’ll still give the edge to UNC to win. More than 2-3 suspensions and LSU has the edge.

I think Butch Davis will play everybody not already suspended, regardless of whether a kid is under NCAA review or not.

Better to play ALL your players, win the game, and later have to apologize and vacate, than to show up and not play kids that might later be cleared by the NCAA later.

Still think UNC pulls the upset over LSU.

Still see VT losing to Boise State on Monday.

I understand your zero expectations. What I don’t understand is: how does Hamilton still have a job?

Part of Hamilton’s scope of work is to look after the university’s interests. Hiring Kiffin was questionable enough, but to let that loose cannon go unchecked for 12 months is unforgivable.

I’m a Bama (then Auburn) fan, but think the Vols, and their tradition, deserve much better.

USC will struggle tonight. Word is they may have the best receiving core in the SEC but they also have the worst offensive line and a qb who makes poor decisions when pressured. The D is banged up as well and did not have much to start with. I would not be surprised to see USC start 0-2 this season at all. This is the end for the ole ball coach this year my friends, time has passed him by.

As far as UGA is concerned. Do not look for a blowout victory and don’t look for much except the basics from the coaching staff. More like stuff you see at the GDay game. This is done on purpose and I promise UGA fans… the best will be brought out on 9-11. Just be patient this week.

As Dooley goes, so goes Hamilton….I’m not going to pray for Dooley to fail just to get rid of an AD…I love my teams too much for that. T3 – Butch Davis is not going to play anybody in the LSU game who is “under a cloud”. Doesn’t matter whether it has to do with the agent situation or with the tutor. UNC is waiting to hear from the NCAA concerning AgentGate – I’d bet that they don’t have a clearance before kickoff on Greg Little.
The school itself is investigating the tutor and whatever help she may have given to a number of players. UNC is not going to play ANY players who they think may have broken the rules. They would sooner not play them and find out they are innocent than play them only to forfeit – I expect UNC to be without 5-7 defensive starters (including Austin who is done).
LSU wins by 7.

word around here is that Ingram’s injury is not serious. I think they’ll hold him out until theyr’e absolutely sure that he’s ready. I’m guessing that will be against Arkansas. Fortunately for UA, the RB position is probably the one in which they are the deepest.

I agree on Ingram’s character. Believe that he is a class act.

2. UNC depleted, LSU wins by 2 TD’s
3. I could play QB for Ole Miss and win the game, but long term, Ole Miss struggles this year
4.Murray will have good stats as pups roll, but next week is a different story

General,

Ingram’s (minor) surgery went well. Per Saban there has been little swelling so, he will return sooner instead of later. But no timeline was given. I’m guessing he’ll play a half of the Duke game in two weeks then be back for the rest of the season.

Thanks for asking.

3rddn, what if they lose and then win the rest of the games as expected–do they work back near the top?

Insider,
Your comment about SC having great receivers concerns me. I watched the replay of UGA-GT on CSS last night and it watered down some of my enthusiasm. Our corners had a tough night, and Cuff did particularly. Maybe Thomas is huge, but Cuff looked 5-10 and 150#s, as he repeatedly was stiff-armed and run over. ULL/Spurrier’s game plan will likely be to attack UGA’s corners with every weapon in the arsenal–until we show we can shut them down. With our increased emphasis on QB pressure, he might try a lot of quick dumps on the blitzing sides. The other thing that jumped out was that Curran and Jones made about a third of the plays. If we wind up with a strong D this year, TG & Co. will have earned every penny of their pay.

South Carolina will beat So. Miss – will not be easy as they USM has nothing to lose – and this is a huge game for them. But come 4th quarter – USC will be in control and gaining confidence for the coming victory against UGA next week.

Guys – mark it down – USC will beat UGA this year and it will not be a nail – biter. Here is why:
UGA is breaking in a new QB – and will focus on the run.
UGA is breaking in a new DC and staff
UGA is breaking in a new defensive scheme
BOBO sucks the first few games each season as far as game planning and calling plays. He is an average OC at best

Spurrier vs BOBO? I go with Spurrier.
ELLIS vs Granthan – until proven – I go with ELLIS – a very good DC.

Talent wise – USC has players and depth – we are not Florida as to depth – but neither is UGA.

Game day coaching – Spurrier or Richt? Close call – Richt is a very good game day coach – but Spurrier is one of the best.

I look for USC to set the tempo – get a lead – weather UGA ralley – and finish strong.

I look for UGA to try to slow the game – run the ball – and our defense will be ready – have to play catch-up – and get sloppy – as Richts teams are athletic – but very sloppy – and lose by 10 – minimal.

Final score 27 – 17.

Get ready for the Fire Richt websites to get cranking.

Peace out suckas!

Dooley will be a Bill Curry flop at Tennesee. What Spurrier has so much fun with in UT is they are a bunch of rednecks that rather have a Richard Petty lose games for them than an educated Dooley. The press panders to these hillbillies too and thinks they are being discreet until Spurrier calls them out on it. When you have a press that is selling out ,like Tony’s crowd does, you need a free speaking person like Spurrier to speak the truth. To compare Spurrier to Tennessee’s last coach is as absurd as comparing LK to Dooley. Spurrier has won National Championships, and run a clean program, he desires repect from the press if not the Georgia and Tenn. fan. His comments on Georgia recuiting and North Carolina will prove time and time again accurate. In the end Tennessee will rather have LK than Dooley, they won’t understand a man like Dooley, or maybe they understand him too well and expect wins for the money they pay instead of hot air. Alabama and Bill Curry all over again.

My nephew attends Florida. He tells me that the school administrators as well as the campus police and local Gainesville police continually look the other way when the football players get in trouble. The local police are told to call Meyer when one of his “boys” is detained by the police for any kind of offense. Many times Meyer or one of his coaches personally pick the offender up at the police department and no report of the incident is ever reported. Meyer also has the majority of his players taking the same classes in the same major so he can control them throughout thier college careers and the school goes along with it.I’ve always thought that Meyer was a phoney…I don’t care how good a coach anyone thinks he is….what a joke! The national media needs to look into Florida’s football program. The majority of the Florida team is made up of a bunch of thugs….and always has been.

LSU is not a full strength either for UNC. The Tigers are already thin at LB and will be without Ryan Baker who was to start at outside LB. The starting TE, DeAngelo Peterson, who big things are expected out of this season, is out too. jumbeaux,

That is an unusally high number of injuries before even the first game. We’re pretty healthy. Only Ingram is out and I’m cool with that. I want to see Trent “the beast” Richardson do his thing and I really want to see our 3rd team tailback Eddie Lacy play some ball. I’m excited about Lacy getting in some playing time.

I think that this kind of stuff with UNC and agent gate really rattles a team and messes with their psyche so I would have to heavily favor LSU in this game. When big time players mess up sometimes by doing really bad or dumb stuff that casts a cloud over the team then I think its a big psycological letdown for the team- Andre Smith at bama before the Sugar Bowl, Carlos Dunlap and his DUI before the seccg. Stuff like that really impacts a team and I think its really gonna hurt UNC.
