How many South Carolina players could miss Georgia game?

It’s Friday. The season starts next Thursday and Lord, please let it get here quickly. We have just about talked this sport to death.

Because it’s Friday the floor is open to you on any topic. Keep it clean, of course.  Here are five topics just to get the party started:

1. How many South Carolina players will miss the Georgia game on Sept. 11? It’s a pretty good bet that tight end Weslye Saunders will not play in the opener with Southern Mississippi next Thursday. The NCAA has had a couple of prayer meetings (that’s Southern for “serious conversations”) with young Weslye over several issues.

Now, thanks to some good reporting by Joe Person of The State newspaper in Columbia, we learn that a bunch of Gamecocks have been living in a local hotel.

Nothing wrong with that because they get a $500 monthly allowance to live where they want. The problem is that the Whitney Hotel is not a Motel 6. It has a limo service and whoever runs the thing was letting the players live there for $450 a month. Person’s reporting revealed that using the lowest possible discount rate the hotel provides, the value of the room was, at a minimum, $1,200 a month.

It won’t shock you to know that there is a rule against that. The standard punishment here is for the players to pay the difference in what they should have paid and what they actually paid PLUS a two-game suspension. That means several South Carolina players could miss the Sept. 11 game with Georgia.

Spurrier won’t make any excuses, he never does. His attitude will be that the players knew the rules and chose not to follow them. They get $500 a month for housing and they made the choice. Spurrier doesn’t believe in baby sitting players and he’s not about to start now. But if this blows up and a season with so much promise goes quickly south, I’m not going to be surprised if he walks away.

2. Some advice to the freshmen at Florida. Don’t mess with Mike Pouncey: This much is clear. Something happened at Florida which caused two of Florida’s “Five Star” recruits–Ronald Powell and Dominique Easley–to miss part of practice on Tuesday. Coach Urban Meyer would not say why. There were reports that the two players were not happy with the way they were being pushed in practice. On Thursday Meyer said everything was “fine.”

At Florida’s media day Easley compared he and a couple of his freshmen teammates to LeBron James, Chris Bosh, and Dwayne Wade of the Miami Heat.

That’s just precious. I guess young Mr. Easley feels he and his young teammates have arrived in Gainesville to save the program that has only won 57 games and two national championships in the past five seasons.

All-America offensive lineman Mike Pouncey said that the freshmen need to talk less and play more.

“At the end of the day the freshmen need to just shut their mouths and just come play,” Pouncey told reporters when asked about the freshman class.  ”They haven’t done nothing on Saturday, and most of the fans don’t even know who they are. Until they prove themselves they just need to sit back and let the older guys play.”

Highly recruited freshmen. Don’t you just love them?

3. Splitting Michigan and Ohio State is a bad idea: There is now talk that the Big Ten might split up Ohio State and Michigan when the conference goes to divisional play in 2011. The thinking is that the two old rivals would play once in the regular season and possibly again for the Big Ten championship and a spot in the Rose Bowl. In order to do that the Ohio State-Michigan game would be moved to an earlier spot on the calendar instead of the last game of the regular season.

Bad, bad, idea.

The Big 12 screwed up and did away with the annual Nebraska-Oklahoma game when it went to divisions.  This would be an equally bad mistake. The ACC split of Miami and Florida State thinking they would play for the title. Hasn’t happened yet.

For anybody who cares, this is how I would split up the Big Ten:

BO DIVISION

Ohio State

Michigan

Iowa

Michigan State

Indiana

Purdue

WOODY DIVISION

Penn State

Nebraska

Wisconsin

Illinois

Northwestern

Minnesota

Everybody gets to keep one rivalry game from the other division, just like the SEC.

4. More trouble at North Carolina: The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, has always taken a lot of pride in conducting its athletics program the right way. This is where Dean Smith worked, for goodness sakes.

So school officials and alumni can’t be happy today to learn that the NCAA is looking into possible academic misconduct by a number of Tar Heel football players. This comes on top of the NCAA investigation into DT Marvin Austin and possible improper contact with an agent.

Now we have no idea who will be available when North Carolina takes on LSU a week from tomorrow at the Georgia Dome. This was a season with so much promise at North Carolina. Will it now start to unravel?

5. The FWAA strips USC of another championship: Pat Haden, the new athletics director at Southern California, has already sent Reggie Bush’s Heisman Trophy back to the Heisman Trust. They have stripped photos and references to Bush from Heritage Hall.

USC will return the BCS championship Trophy of 2004 if the appeal of its NCAA sanctions is denied.

Now USC will have to send back another national championship trophy, this one given by the Football Writers Association of American, which has presented the Grantland Rice Trophy since 1956. That organization (of which I am a member and former president) voted to vacate USC’s title but not to award it to another school.

My personal preference would have been to award the trophy to Auburn, which went 13-0, won the SEC championship, but did not get a chance to play for the national championship. Auburn finished No. 2 behind USC in all the polls including the final FWAA vote that season. But I respect the decision of my fellow writers.

Assuming USC’s appeal of its NCAA sanctions will be denied, the Trojans will have been stripped of two national championships (BCS, FWAA). The Associated Press announced earlier this year that USC will be allowed to keep its 2004 title.

Everyone, enjoy the Friday free-for-all. And have a great weekend.

this is the blow that will send Spurrier out of coaching, and on to retirement and golfing, which he apprently enjoys mroe than winning football Championships over the last decade.

Florida, Meyer & Saban’s approach grind on players, it’s the old school demean, yell, berate, wave your arms a round a lot. Phil Jackson, John Wooden, Tony Dungy never did that. Meyer & Saban ain’t got thr longevity style of coaching, that’s why they quit every 4 or 5 years. Players hate em’.

Spurrier’s 2-7 against Richt with ALL his starters, Richt’s 39-5 on the road, Richt will win the SC game, with or without suspended players from SC. If the players are suspended though, blowout victory for Georgia.

First comment from Techman is exactly why you are the most hated and despised fan base in the south. Unemployed architects and engineers galore because of the bad economy. Yeah, that GT diploma is really helping out.

Meanwhile, the UGA business grads are out working everyday and earning a good living for their families.

Ealey messed up. According to Tech man all of us UGA folks have spent time in jail?

1. That’s ok. Ealy just got arrested for being dumber than a rock. So apparently every SEC team has to trim down it’s roster…..it’s tradition maybe? Sorta like UGA players must have a suspended driver’s liscense. Q#$^!#$^!$^!#$%@#$&@. Really, Tony you should do a piece on why no UGA football players have a proper driver’s liscense.

2. Hehe, attitudes like that don’t help.

3. Yeh I agree, they should be in the same conference in a similar manner to Bama and Auburn.

4. It’s gotten kind of sad now, I feel pitty for Tar Heel fans. LSU was going to cream them in the dome regardless of all of this. But now the excuses will come flying out.

5. Geez, it must be bad news Friday. All of a sudden USC’s reign last decade is just wiped away. Glad I’m not a fan. Auburn doesn’t get the championship. Most Auburn fans I know do not want some cheap hand me down championship 6 years later.

How many dumb things does Urban Meyer have to do for people to realize what kind of jerkish behavior this guy gets away with? Anybody seen the Jeremy Fowler video? Meyer likes to try and intimidate people, bit of a bully, probably didn’t get hugged enough as a kid. Pretty bad when your 2 star freshman lose respect for Meyer, and leave practice. If you don’t show respect to players, players don’t show respect to Coaches.

There’s one major question in the South Carolina case. What’s the school affiliation of the Whitney’s owner, or whoever approved the reduced rate charged to the players? If that person is a booster, this issue could get much worse.

This happens to Urban Meyer every place he goes. After 5 years, the program blows up, and Meyer quits and moves on to another school. the players just get tired of being cussed out and demeaned. Urban Meyer has never lasted 6 years at 1 school in his entire coaching career. Players don’t like his cussing and screaming, it gets old, and it’s unnecessary. This ain’t the military.

Urban Meyers is a Bobby Knight clone.

Georgia’s Ealy should miss the South Carolina game, but he is first string – so won’t.

The actions of Georgia football players continue to prove that the personal quality of their recruits is not considered – only their athletic ability. Furthermore, Coach Richt does not run a strict program where personal responsibility is required where examples of bad behavior make a big enough impression to slow further transgressions.

You haters crack me up. What is CMR suppossed to do? Drive all 100 players to and from everywhere they go? Hold their hand while crossing a street? He will get suspended and will run his butt off after practice. But you know what? Since he plays for UGA, the AJC deems it neccesary to plaster on the top of it’s newspaper. If this happened at Tech, it would be in small print on the last page. If this happened anywhere else (fla, Bama, UT, etc) it would get swept under the rug and no discipline would be taken. I give CMR credit for disciplining his players unlike MOST other schools.

it was a hit and run in a parking deck for crying out loud. he wasnt even drunk. its really tight in parking deck already and when your driving a long car like the old chevey impala it would be easy to run into something. he messed up by running but im pretty sure he wasnt supposed to be out or something and so he got scared and ran. no big deal. he will have to pay for the damages and he spent time in jail. so i think some extra running on the stadium stairs is good enough and maybe a half a game.i think he learned his lesson.

Yeah but remember we all felt Auburn won the SEC simply because of a down SEC year. Oklahoma was likely the better team and since USC is now omitted would have an equal deserving shot. Shoot even Utah that defeated Bama in a bowl game the next year also would be deserving. They proved they can beat a top notch SEC program. Either leave it vacant or make it a trio Championship.

1. Setting up the Divisions in the Big 10 is tough and the difficulty in doing so affirms the GENIUS of the SEC. The splits, the traditional rivals, the rotation, the early season matchups, preserving tradition (Alabama/UT) all were handled very well by the SEC. They created a template, the Big 10 should follow it. I think I’d swap Penn State and Iowa in you splits above. Ohio State and Michigan is a “yesterday” rivalry, but nostalgia dies hard in the Big 10, just like their Champion in a BCS game.

2. Vacating the National Championship is the right thing to do. A vacancy creates the question – “Who won that year?” Answering the question reminds us why it is vacated. Arbitrarily picking Auburn or any other team just weakens the Mythical National Champion even more. They didn’t appreciate their coach, they weren’t chosen for the game, etc. It’s sad, but it happened.

You are referencing a Wordpress blog from a disgruntled Ohio State fan? If I start my own blog will you take that as gospel too? Players have left for many, many reasons if you would take the time to look at why (baseball contract, medical, etc.) and Saban tells the ones that are on the fence that there is a chance they will greyshirt. Can you find a quote from any Bama player that was asked to greyshirt that they were unhappy with it? No.

You, and the rest of the Dawgs on here, will obviously think I am biased…but no I don’t think that stuff is going on now. I think Saban has put the fear of God in these kids not to screw up. Gator Mike -

The specious attacks on Meyer (and Saban) are the result of envy.

UF runs a very hard camp. Those of you who have been through a process like this (sports, military and, to an extent, traditional fraternity pledging “back in the day”) can relate to this. One of the objectives is to sublimate the individual “me” to be part of the team. It’s understandable how some highly-rated players just out of high school are a little full of themselves. They also find out quickly that they are no longer dominant at their new level. With the heat, humidity, and everyone banging on each other, tempers flare frequently. As one can imagine, it can be quite a learning process with a lot of bumps along the way.

The new ones will learn and the senior leadership by the players is the best way to do this.

I do not understand the problem at UGA with suspended driver licenses.
No other college in the country has this problem at this magnitude.

The UNC story will get ugly. There are few “academic inquiry” type investigations that end up with a slap on the wrist. This causes games to be forfeited several seasons down the road. The safe bet, if there is a hint of a problem, is for UNC not to play the players in question.
Only when they are 100% sure should the players get on the field.

Spurrier has the right attitude. If they cannot play, then they cannot play. Who is next on the depth chart? He will play.

LSU football player arrested on rape charges
By
BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA – An LSU football player has been booked on charges he raped a woman he met in an Internet chat room, police said Thursday.

Donovan Grayson Jr., 19, surrendered to police after a warrant for his arrest was issued based on the woman’s accusations, LSU police spokesman Capt. Ricky Adams said.

Grayson, who is a linebacker for the Tigers, met the unidentified woman in a chat room Thursday night, according to the warrant.

She then drove to his apartment, where she said Grayson led her to his bedroom and locked the door and raped her after she repeatedly told him no.

The woman told police she did not call for help because she feared he would hurt her.

Adams said Grayson “disputes her version of the events” and that the investigation is ongoing.

LSU Sports Information Director Michael Bonnette said LSU coach Nick Saban had no comment until he gets more information on the matter. Saban also said he had not made a decision regarding Grayson’s status on the team.

this is a little article about saben after his first year at ala

In his last 46 games as a head coach Nick Saban has a record of 22-24 (.478), and those games were coached at three of the most revered names in the game of football: LSU, the Miami Dolphins, and Alabama. No doubt, Nick Saban is a great recruiter, and he has proven that he can win championships when he has quality assistants calling the plays, but now Saban must prove that he can win football games and championships at place where any random person picked off the street could win football games. Alabama has one of the most storied traditions in college football history, and Paul “Bear” Bryant’s 25 tenure in Tuscaloosa was just one period of a long history of winning football games and National Titles. Nick Saban arrived in Tuscaloosa after a series of coaching moves and personal hires by the administration and Trustees at Alabama that would rival any amount of buffoonery in the history of man. If you had to write a casebook study on how to destroy a football program, your first and last stop would be in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and the blame for that destruction can be laid right at the feet of the people that were making the head coaching hires. After Gene Stallings retired (more like forced out by the Alabama president and AD) Alabama hired Mike Dubose, Dennis Franchione, Mike Price, and Mike Shula, and the most amazing thing about those coaching hires is that many of the people that made those hires are still working on the payroll at Alabama. Just amazing, but accountability is evidently not something that is important at Alabama, which brings us to one Nick Saban. In 2007 Alabama could have gone down to any barber shop or beauty salon in Tuscaloosa and hired any random customer or hair stylist to be the head coach and that person could have won 7 games last year. What is so remarkable, that when you talk to Alabama fans they talk like Saban actually did something in 2007, but when you take a hard look at the facts Saban actually did less than what any competent high school coach would have done. First, any competent high school coached hired at Alabama after the country club that Mike Shula was running in Tuscaloosa would have tossed the troublemakers and players (our guess between 12 and 20 players should have been sent packing) that didn’t care about winning and started fresh. If Saban had done that he would have won 7 games. He didn’t and he still won 7 games, which is a great lesson for coaches that decide to sacrifice their principles for the sake of winning. With more Alabama players getting arrested and into trouble in the offseason, it is clear that Saban has not gotten through to his team that they are not at Alabama to hang out in bars and to fight cops. In fact, Saban is now in the same position that Phil Fulmer finds himself in that there have been so many off-field incidents, that you really have to wonder if the players respect their head coach and university at all. With that background, Saban is now faced with the very difficult 2008 season.

South Carolina could field their cheerleaders and the game would be close. in the past decade every game has been decided by 7 points or less except 2000 (10-21, L), 2003 (31-7, W), and 2006 (18-0, W). UGA is 7-3 during this time, but has won 4 of these games by 4 points or less.
2009 – 41-37 2008 – 14-7 2007 – 12-16 2006 – 18-0 2005 – 17-15

I hate alabama because they have terrible fans. when they are good, you hear about how great they are and how the omnipotent Saban is the best coach since Bear Bryant. When they are bad you just hear them babble about winning the most championships and how its not right that they got caught cheating again and Tennessee did not.

If you live in alabama it is worse, you cannot escape the “Alabama Fever”, which is a pandemic that leads to constant yelling of “Roll Tide” and my personal favorite “RTR, Baby, RTR”. This occurs in restaurants, Birmingham Barons baseball games (which is a AA team affiliated with the White Sox and has nothing to do with Alabama), and occasionally in business meetings. This is somehow more obnoxious than Auburn fans greeting each other by saying “War Eagle” to each other while shaking hands – despite their mascot being a tiger.

I will admit, before I moved to Birmingham, Alabama was just another team in the SEC, I did not hate them, did not like them. Being Amongst ‘em has changed that.

Can't We Just Like Our Teams Without The Insults?

August 27th, 2010

Here is the truth of the matter, the police are the one’s who determine how many players get arrested. The reason you never hear about Alabama players getting arrested is not because they are all saints. The reason is that the police are all a bunch of good old boys. Nick Saban has them in his back pocket just like the rest of the state of Alabama. I guarantee that anytime a Alabama player gets in trouble, Saban is the first person notified. The punishment is dealt with internally, and the media never catches wind of the story or just buries the story. At UGA, we have an overzealous jackass for a police chief, Jimmy Williamson. He instructs his officers to arrest every person possible to raise revenue and keep his name in the paper. The first person notified when a player is arrested is that moron Mark Bradley. He gets to smear the team he hates the most and Williamson gets to puff out his chest a little more. Of course, this does not justify the stupidity of Ealey. I think a one game suspension and a whole lot of running is in order.

You should probably write about that and how it will probably be swept under the rug like most UGA incidents. I’m going out on a limb and based on Richt ethics, I’m saying 100% he will be playing.

Psst….Barhart, the rates of $1,200 for the Whitney are not for 1 bedroom rooms you moron. It was a standard rate for a 2 bedroom. Extended stay rates are right at $450 to $500 a person which is exactly what the lease contract was written for and approved by the compliance office. The issue is that we have have dumbasses on our team that are late in paying rent.

The problem here is you are quoting Joe Person. If you are quoting someone like Joe Person and his non factual articles, you need to be fired from the AJC…..which is exactly what happened to Joe Person who is no longer with “The State” newspaper.

My day has been ruined because as you know Tony I have been calling for Ealey to be in The Heisman running by mid October. However, I’m afraid he is looking at a 6 game minimum suspension here. There are also reports he missed a previous court date for a ticket. Ealey will not be present for USC which means major trouble for my Dawgs. We are now 2 injuries away from playing 2 true freshman at RB and QB. If you are a major rb high school prospect why in the hell are you not signing with UGA after looking at our depth chart??

Birmingdawg

August 27th, 2010
11:58 am

Also, Alabama really made the UGA radar in the last 10 years when UGA was declared “not man enough to beat Alabama” by Pat Dye. They were. Since then, UGA has won three of 4 meetings vs. Alabama. however, Alabama fans act like they dominate Georgia because of the black out win in 2008. While they lead the series overall, in the past 30 years, the rivalry (if you call it that) is 5-5 in 10 meetings, with Alabama dominating in the ’90’s, a decade when UGA was dominated by every team they played. This is almost as bad as Tech fans after winning once in 10 years. At least Alabama has a championship to give them some credibility.

I don’t understand how bumping into a car is an arrestable offense. I was building a loft apartment complex in Atlanta and watched some Barbie Bimbo do the same thing. I got her tag, called the police and gave them the info. She didn’t get arrested, she got a damn ticket as was merited by the offense.

These “arrests” of georgia players are mostly laughable if they weren’t so sad. Why does Adams hate his sports programs so much? or am I to believe that UGA was voted the number one party school in the Country because ONLY the members of the athletics programs are partying?

You show me someone who went to college and DIDN’T drink before they were 21 and 8 out of 10 times I’ll show you a liar. Arresting kids for being kids is just plain stupid.

As to the suspended license? About 20 years ago my license was suspended for too many tickets in a 3 year period. I received notice that it was suspended 9 MONTHS after the fact. It took me 30 minutes to clear it up, but for 9 MONTHS I had been driving with a suspended license and had no clue because of the ineptitude of the State DOT. I had lived in the same house for at least 5 years and it was the same address on my license so it’s not like they couldn’t figure out where to send a freaking letter to.

Unless I’m mistaken, with the current laws in Georgia, anyone under 21 can have their license suspended if they are going with the flow of traffic through Atlanta (usually 75 MPH so you aren’t run off the road or impeding traffic) and get randomly pulled out of the herd. Although the speed limit is 55 you are literally taking your life in your hands if drive it.

I got the grey shirt info http://oversigning.com/testing/ and let me ask you this in honesty to you really think there are no Bama players drinking underage or guilty of moving violations in a automobile ? What should scare you is that none are being reported…none. Do you think that is possible ? ”

How2fish,

I respect your posts but have to respectfully disagree with you on this one and here’s why

Saban came to Bama in 2007. Between 2007 and summer 2008 8 players at Bama were arrested for all sorts of things, 2 of them for serious felonies and in the Jimmy Johns case a sting by the Tusc PD was set up to nail him. Additionally, the problem was so bad that the Tuscaloosa Daily news did a series of articles questioning if cops were singling out Bama players. The articles stemmed from the arrest of Rashad Johnson for allegedly pushing an undercover cop in a Tusc hotspot the Legacy. Video evidence proved Rashad did nothing of the sort, he was vindicated, and charges dropped. If the Tuscaloosa cops let Bama players get away with stuff then why were 8 players arrested over 2 years? All those arrests are the reason why Bama won the 08 Fulmer cup.

Saban laid down the hammer and started forcing transfers of players for minor things like breaking team rules. The result? We haven’t had a player arrested in over a year. It took 2 years to change the culture and get the problem children out of the program but Saban did it.

It has nothing to do with the cops laying off Bama players and everything to do with Saban booting guys for breaking team rules let alone getting arrested. He recently booted former 4 star and highly touted recruit Rod Woodson who was competing for the starting job at safety. He broke team rules which meant there were either behavioral issues or he was not doing the academic work- missing class, tutor appts, etc. and now he’s gone.

In reference to the oversigning.com using wordpress this is just some joe who started his own blog and who posts “transferred because he wasn’t good enough to play” as a reason for some players transferring. Just this guy’s opinion- in other words his own pure freaking speculation. The guy has an axe to grind and quite frankly has zero credibility.

Richt is now in his 10th year and his players are out of control with Ealey now the 8th player arrested only 2/3 of the way through the year. Don’t try to deflect what are obvious culture problems at Georgia with some stuff about Tuscaloosa police letting Bama players get away with all kinds of stuff. The clear evidence of Bama player arrests throughout 07 and 08 proves otherwise.

And there was no more time taken to do it that it took to gather the facts..I know from the old days some cops would give most football player a little leeway when they could..not at UGA anymore..at Bama I’m not so sure from what some of the folks I know that live there.tell me.are they being paid off ? No I don’t think that but if given the chance to turn a blind eye perhaps and I say that as someone who half of his family still lives in Bama and who spent 6 years there heck I remember when the Bear came to either Florence or Huntsville they threw parades..still 8 arrest are too many..

Tide Rising

August 27th, 2010
3:41 pm

How2fish,

I really believe that it comes down to 1) expectations set and 2) education.

One thing Saban is really big on is having professional speakers come in and educate the players on things like how to treat the opposite sex, what to do in a police encounter, consequences of actions, etc. basic common sense things that you and I may take for granted but which some of these players from lower economic/social backgrounds may have missed.

Somehow I just don’t think these things are being taught at UGA and the Ealey case illustrates it. Just basic things like he should have known to show up for his court date-otherwise he should have known a bench warrant would be issued, he should have known not to leave the scene of an accident. How and why he was taught basic things like this is bewildering.

The other thing is expectations. What the hell is he doing out at 3:30 am during fall training with the season about to start? If you set expectations that guys should be in bed at reasonable hours, that they should take care of business such as the court date, that they should keep their nose clean and avoid anything that could result in police trouble, etc. then these things won’t happen.

At Bama the expectation is straightforward- get in trouble with the law or break team rules and you’re gone- plain and simple. At Georgia apparently there is no fear of consequence, no fear of Richt, etc. If he wants to avoid future problems he has to start booting guys with regularity for the simpler, smaller stuff like attitude, behavior, etc. And he has to instill FEAR. I mean real FEAR that if you screw up even on a minor scale you’re gone. Until this happens there are going to be problems. JMHO of course.

Last. to answer your initial question cleaning house doesn’t happen overnight. The culture change takes a year or 2. Saban was still booting players and having players arrested in 08 but at that point it was beginning to be clear of expectations as the bad apples were falling away from the program. But at first it got worse before it got better. I suspect it would be the same at UGA.

I had forgotten about the new zero tolerance program at UGA in general relating to alcohol. That alone will garner the really simple, dumb arrests for underage drinking of which a lot of the dawg players have been arrested. That policy automatically will give the dawg players more arrests than at comparable schools. And if that is the zero tolerance policy of the APD in addition to the school then again its just a given that you’re going to have more arrests as will the general student population as well.

I think a lot of us are old school. More afraid of our dads then the cops- that’s how and why I stayed out of trouble in college also. Fred,

The guy is 20 years old. He’s old enough to know that missing a court date is serious. You need not be a rocket scientist to understand that. We have 20 year olds in Iraq and Afgh. with the responsibility of making life and death decisions under immense stress and operating multi million dollar equipment and doing a good job of both. Your excuse making for a 20 year old man that can’t or won’t take care of business is pathetic.

And the idea that the cops are targeting the athletes, especially Easley is absurd. They didn’t target Easley. They were called to the scene of an accident after Easley fled the scene. They then had to go and arrest him per the law. In what way, shape, or form is this targeting someone. Did they entrap him into running into another car and then leaving the scene? Idiot!

I am trying to get a handle on what Saban would kick players off the team for.
1. Would an ARREST for any traffic offense get a player booted?
2. Would an ARREST for underage possession of alcohol get a Bama player the boot, and do you think this is not going on among football players in Tuscaloosa at all?
3. Would driving a scooter with a suspended license get a Bama player off the team?
4. Would a first offense DUI do the job?
5. Is there any kind of ARRESTt where Saban would not kick the guy off the team?

They left because they were in demand and be sought after by better programs due to exceptional coaching ability. Richt was sought by UGAYs due to his success at FSU, but lately no one is beating down his door.

Questioner at 5:35,

Saban doesn’t have a zero tolerance policy. He has a harsh policy but its fair. Its unlikely Saban would run someone off for something like driving on a suspended license. But what you are missing and the point I’m trying to make is that Saban’s discipline is harsh enough and the players have enough fear of consequences to stay out of trouble. Its that simple. A player wouldn’t be driving on a suspended license to begin with for fear of real consequences with Saban.

If Saban regularly boots players for breaking team rules such as behavioral issues or missing class/tutoring sessions then the message is clear to Bama players. If you get arrested and embarrass the university you may or may not get booted. There may be extenuating circumstances, etc. But the point is that you don’t want to get arrested and find out. That is the point

Years ago, at a junior college in the University of Georgia system, the student body president, president of the BSU, president of the Key Club etc, etc was caught stealing text books from the campus book store and selling them back at the end of the quarter. He was also selling text books at other university system schools. He was expelled, couldn’t enroll in a university system school for two years, but eventually graduated with honors and went on to have a good career as an accountant.

I bring this story to light because even the supposedly “best” students can make mistakes. I’m not defending Ealey’s actions, simply reminding everyone that college kids make mistakes. Hell, even my father forgot to renew his driver’s license once. When he tried to rent a car on a business trip he was embarrassed by his mistake … and the rental agency grudgingly allowed him to have the rental (things were much different in the 1960s).

Amazingly, since so many Tech fans seem to think only UGA folks make mistakes, my father had a master’s degree from the Flats.

Again, I am not defending the mistakes of UGA athletics, just reminding everyone that college kids, adults, and, yes, even the daughter of the former governor of Alaska make mistakes. It’s called being human.

Perhaps more people need to remember that.

Mr. Barnhart,

I’m not from around here. I grew up in a place where you had to earn every step you took. In 2004 Auburn came in second, it’s true they were undefeated, but they came in second. That means something. It means they were judged and found wanting. They didn’t deserve ‘first’. I take offense to you wanting to reward a team with something they didn’t earn on the field. You can’t and shouldn’t rewrite history to fit your desires. Your wants are your own. I hope one day you can experience what it’s like to commit to something greater than yourself, for I can tell you’ve never played the game you write about. If you can find a significant proportion of Auburn players that share your viewpoint, I’d be shocked. The difference between a guy in the stands and the guy on the field is that the guy on the field knows when he’s been beat–even if his adversary doesn’t line up against him. A real player doesn’t want the luxury of the ‘what ifs’. Where I come from, when a guy earns his next step, he ain’t looking back at his footprints. It speaks volumes about Auburn’s current situation if they want their silver to look like gold; and says a lot about you, Tuberville and the rest of the so called administration who prefer to covet an undeserved reward rather than mold a championship team.

A 1-game suspension for Ealey is a joke and the very reason CMR continues to have one of the worst disciplined teams in one of the least disciplined conferences. Why was Ealey’s license suspended in the first place???? Sonny will have to paint me white for the home opener because I will be bright red with embarassment and shame at what my university has become: Gangsta U.

Concerned, haha. You faulty logic and righteous tone “…they were found wanting….” are excellent satire. You didn’t grow up where you had to earn everything you have, ….because you haven’t grown up yet. At least not intellectually. I don’t even like Auburn, but they got screwed that year. I agree that awarding vacated titles or belated championships is not appropriate, and neither is it a proper remedy. Unfair things happen, just look at my painted a$$ or in your own mirror, Concerned, and that fact will be clear. But don’t get sanctimonious on us, and don’t even try to deny that you voted for Obama.

Concerned, you clearly never played the game yourself or you would not be talking in platitudes about giving yourself to larger things and being judged and found wanting. That Auburn team never got the chance to PLAY for their championship, which is the whole point. Are you saying that what a group of WRITERS (who, in your own words probably never played the game) voted on is the definitive word on a team’s worth or degree of success???? You do contradict yourself. And it’s really not all that important anyway, now is it?

Tony, on the big 10 divisions, yours has the same problem the ACC has, no rhyme or geographic reason for the splits..this is the way it should be.

East/ Penn State, Ohio State, Indiana , Purdue, Illinois, Northwestern

West/Michigan, Nebraska, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota

This puts the best 4 programs in different divisions, (2 each)

I guess it is like initiation in a Frat—-you can’t really be a true UGAY football player until you have a record. Some bring them from high school, others get them in Athens and at the beach–Ask Matt.
The UGAY recruits must be some of the dumbest people on the planet. If Richt really wanted to crack down he would suspend these guys past the first sissy game of the season– but wait–the real schedule begins after that so one game is it. I heard UGAY is bringing back D Evans to mentor the guys–but you have to bring your own red panties–not in the budget.

I hope the Big 10 does not make the same mistake that the ACC made…and, thankfully, the SEC didn’t. It was not too long ago that Illinois, now considered bad, was in the Rose Bowl….and if not for a terrible kicker, Northwestern would have beaten Auburn in the Outback last year…

Remember….when the SEC split into East/West, no one gave the West a chance….except for possibly Alabama….I think LSU had Gary DiNardo! However, the product from BOTH divisions has improved BECAUSE of the rivalries developed…and kept…

Well said, APD! Your words are worth repeating:

The guy is 20 years old. He’s old enough to know that missing a court date is serious. You need not be a rocket scientist to understand that. We have 20 year olds in Iraq and Afgh. with the responsibility of making life and death decisions under immense stress and operating multi million dollar equipment and doing a good job of both. Your excuse making for a 20 year old man that can’t or won’t take care of business is pathetic.

And the idea that the cops are targeting the athletes, especially Ealey is absurd. They didn’t target Easley. They were called to the scene of an accident after Ealey fled the scene. They then had to go and arrest him per the law. In what way, shape, or form is this targeting someone. Did they entrap him into running into another car and then leaving the scene? Idiot!

There are new sheriffs in town, Saban, Meyer, Miles and PJ is not far behind. Champions are driven by demanding discipline and the best from their players, and it helps to stay out of jail.

My first impression on the Ealey episode of yesterday was that it was no big deal. However, after reading more about Ealey, it appears something needs to be done for him to get a wake-up call. He apparently ignored an earlier summons to appear and pay a delinquent ticket. It’s been inferred that the coaching staff pointedly told him not to drive, which he ignored. There are also reports of him being involved in fights in high school as well as poor sportsmanship..

If all true, this isn’t a random event but a pattern. For his own good, he needs to be sent a strong message with a multiple-game suspension.

Dawg fans trying to gloss over all this need to realize that to not make him accountable just continues to feed the monster and cheapens the program (already devalued thanks to Evans, other players). Besides, RB is a position of strength.

Time for a message to be sent for Ealey’s and UGA’s own good.

You are correct. Elam was holding a can of beer in a parking lot. Solomon was holding a drink that had vodka in it at a club. They were minor-in-possession offenses. While no offenses are good they were not drunkenness or DUI charges.

This is the year for Richt/Georgia to do or die. Offensively loaded, great kicker, great punter, great return guy, QB though young, is an upgrade relative to last year. Defensively a new philosophy which presents a learning curve to deal with early, but doable. South Carolina’s off field problems, turns a game of legitimate concern to a highly probable win. If they beat Arkansas, they go into Jacksonville unbeaten. If they don’t beat Florida this year, when? Very interesting season for the dawgs. I think they can get to the SECCC game. Hopefully they will meet my favorite team Bama for all the marbles.

With regard to Washaun and the other delinquent drivers… I wonder if there are so many arrests because the cops in Athens don’t give the football players a free pass like they do in other college towns (ie Gainsville). When I went to UGA there were at least 9 different police agencies patrolling Athens. Perhaps the sheer number of cops on the street make it more likely that any student, including athletes, will be caught. I wonder if anyone has compared the frequency of arrests for football players with the number of arrests for all students. When I went there it seemed like a number of students were arrested for misdemeanors every weekend, just like in any other college town.

Oh well, at least no one was injured and I have a hunch that the punishment Washaun will face at practice will be much worse than anything the Athens courts will do to him.

In my view, coaching goes beyond wins and losses. Granted, it’s the primary meauring stick but even in that regard, no one has been more sucessful in the SEC during his tenure with the exception of Meyers and Saban. I know an argument could be made for Les Miles at LSU. It is my opinion, however, that coach Richt brings the best combination of success on the gridiron and a leader of young men. Auburn did not get a shot at the big game in 2004-05 because they had a WEAK schedule (La-Monroe, La.Tech, Citadel) during a down year in the SEC and the Tigers did not impress anyone the whole season. $40.00 for one night @ hotel is cheap

August 29th, 2010

I traveled for many years on business and I traveled in Columbia for those years and spent at least one night or two nights per month there, usually out on Two Notch Rd or the d’town H Inn. Now, I retired about 5 yrs ago and rooms prior to that in that market, say in 2003 or 2004 or 05, were always around $79-$99,00 per night and of course, I always had the corp. rate or AARP. I stayed in BUDGET hotels too. $40.00 per night was NEVER available to anyone in those days.

So …………….rooms are only valued at $40,00 per night or $1,200 per month? My calcualtions on say a Hampton Inn downtown would be closer to $2,500 per mo. and up. So, if these kids are getting their rooms for $450.00 per month …………. they in fact are earning ( and not taxed ) far more than that in cheapo rent. It is sort of like a $2,000 per mo income and without tax consequences. This is a major problem gang ………….huge problem for SC and that program.

Houston ……………we have a problem. This thing is gonna blow up in SC’s fac. SS ……… it could nto happen to a better guy.

I want this thing to simmer and boil over on Thursday before the SC/UGA game. It is about PAYING KIDS for elaborate digs and allowing them to live like royalty with limos. Uh oh. Problems abound for SC.

Rai – “Richt is a money-loving”

I would love to hear you elaborate on that because you are WAY off base. You don’t have a clue about Mark Richt, the person, let alone coach. Go back to you techie blog.

Bottom line, there is nothing to be found in Athens or anywhere else for that matter at 3:30 in the morning but trouble.
The season starts next week and you are out at all hours of the night doing god only knows what. Maybe if coach brought back two-adays these guys would be too dang tired to get into trouble.

A better question would be …How many Clarke County Inmates will be able to play agasinst Carolina?

Don’t worry about Steve retiring you two bit blowhard.

And, on the other side of the ledger……”who really cares how many USC players will miss games? I love college football, but I surely don’t. If these dolts don’t care whether they get to play, why should I?

I agree wild one.
By being out at 3am just spells trouble. You would think the Seniors would have enough of this and take a couple of these kids behind the “woodshed.” That’s what use to happen when I played.

Hey, dawgtards, stop wondering how many SC players may miss the game. Start worrying about how many of your thugs will be in jail.

And with Green dismissed from the team for lying about South Beach.

Funny how Tech fans only want to talk about UGA, not Tech. Guess decades of beat-downs have left them with nothing else.

UGA folks can brag all you want to about beating Tech in football most years, and that’s perfectly fair. What’s also fair is to point out that with a history of Jan Kemp (Vince Dooley days), Jim Harrick, and now Damon Evans, UGA is truly “The Cesspool of the South,” and is richly deserving of that title. No one outside of Georgia has any respect for UGA or its athletic department, and that is a fact. It has been said many times: “Tech people are proud of their school, Georgia people are proud of their team.” What a legacy to be proud of!

UGA fans can now return to your mobile home parks and resume waiting for your unemployment checks.

And watching those red panties falling from the sky, always a good time-killer for thUGA dawgtards.  :-)  :-)  :-)

Joe Person is a slime ball who got run out of town immediately after writing this article. Tony, when are you gonna write about Ealey…and when will you and Schlabach get together for a bulldog crying party?

Joe Person is leaving The State and this is his parting shot. He is not liked by Spurrier because he is constantly asking stupid questions. His reporting on the Whitney Hotel has been biased and he fails to accurately portray the Hotel. In his articles, you get the impression it is a really swanky place. In reality, it is an aging hotel with deteriorating amenities. The USC Compliance Office reviewed the leases and approved them before the players moved to the Whitney. In short, the Whitney is a molehill. It’s a case of a reporter stretching really hard for a story. Read the Charleston Post and Courier if you want a less biased assessment of the facts. I heard today that all the players have been cleared and the NCAA has determined there was not benefit to the players based on the rate.

Will UGA take away ealey’s scholarship? Meyer took hammond’s away, first thing. The rules are different in athens—just win! (but they don’t!)
