How many South Carolina players could miss Georgia game?

It’s Friday. The season starts next Thursday and Lord, please let it get here quickly. We have just about talked this sport to death.

Because it’s Friday the floor is open to you on any topic. Keep it clean, of course.  Here are five topics just to get the party started:

1. How many South Carolina players will miss the Georgia game on Sept. 11? It’s a pretty good bet that tight end Weslye Saunders will not play in the opener with Southern Mississippi next Thursday. The NCAA has had a couple of prayer meetings (that’s Southern for “serious conversations”) with young Weslye over several issues.

Now, thanks to some good reporting by Joe Person of The State newspaper in Columbia, we learn that a bunch of Gamecocks have been living in a local hotel.

Nothing wrong with that because they get a $500 monthly allowance to live where they want. The problem is that the Whitney Hotel is not a Motel 6. It has a limo service and whoever runs the thing was letting the players live there for $450 a month. Person’s reporting revealed that using the lowest possible discount rate the hotel provides, the value of the room was, at a minimum, $1,200 a month.

It won’t shock you to know that there is a rule against that. The standard punishment here is for the players to pay the difference in what they should have paid and what they actually paid PLUS a two-game suspension. That means several South Carolina players could miss the Sept. 11 game with Georgia.

Spurrier won’t make any excuses, he never does. His attitude will be that the players knew the rules and chose not to follow them. They get $500 a month for housing and they made the choice. Spurrier doesn’t believe in baby sitting players and he’s not about to start now. But if this blows up and a season with so much promise goes quickly south, I’m not going to be surprised if he walks away.

2. Some advice to the freshmen at Florida. Don’t mess with Mike Pouncey: This much is clear. Something happened at Florida which caused two of Florida’s “Five Star” recruits–Ronald Powell and Dominique Easley–to miss part of practice on Tuesday. Coach Urban Meyer would not say why. There were reports that the two players were not happy with the way they were being pushed in practice. On Thursday Meyer said everything was “fine.”

At Florida’s media day Easley compared he and a couple of his freshmen teammates to LeBron James, Chris Bosh, and Dwayne Wade of the Miami Heat.

That’s just precious. I guess young Mr. Easley feels he and his young teammates have arrived in Gainesville to save the program that has only won 57 games and two national championships in the past five seasons.

All-America offensive lineman Mike Pouncey said that the freshmen need to talk less and play more.

“At the end of the day the freshmen need to just shut their mouths and just come play,” Pouncey told reporters when asked about the freshman class.  ”They haven’t done nothing on Saturday, and most of the fans don’t even know who they are. Until they prove themselves they just need to sit back and let the older guys play.”

Highly recruited freshmen. Don’t you just love them?

3. Splitting Michigan and Ohio State is a bad idea: There is now talk that the Big Ten might split up Ohio State and Michigan when the conference goes to divisional play in 2011. The thinking is that the two old rivals would play once in the regular season and possibly again for the Big Ten championship and a spot in the Rose Bowl. In order to do that the Ohio State-Michigan game would be moved to an earlier spot on the calendar instead of the last game of the regular season.

Bad, bad, idea.

The Big 12 screwed up and did away with the annual Nebraska-Oklahoma game when it went to divisions.  This would be an equally bad mistake. The ACC split of Miami and Florida State thinking they would play for the title. Hasn’t happened yet.

For anybody who cares, this is how I would split up the Big Ten:

BO DIVISION

Ohio State

Michigan

Iowa

Michigan State

Indiana

Purdue

WOODY DIVISION

Penn State

Nebraska

Wisconsin

Illinois

Northwestern

Minnesota

Everybody gets to keep one rivalry game from the other division, just like the SEC.

4. More trouble at North Carolina: The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, has always taken a lot of pride in conducting its athletics program the right way. This is where Dean Smith worked, for goodness sakes.

So school officials and alumni can’t be happy today to learn that the NCAA is looking into possible academic misconduct by a number of Tar Heel football players. This comes on top of the NCAA investigation into DT Marvin Austin and possible improper contact with an agent.

Now we have no idea who will be available when North Carolina takes on LSU a week from tomorrow at the Georgia Dome. This was a season with so much promise at North Carolina. Will it now start to unravel?

5. The FWAA strips USC of another championship: Pat Haden, the new athletics director at Southern California, has already sent Reggie Bush’s Heisman Trophy back to the Heisman Trust. They have stripped photos and references to Bush from Heritage Hall.

USC will return the BCS championship Trophy of 2004 if the appeal of its NCAA sanctions is denied.

Now USC will have to send back another national championship trophy, this one given by the Football Writers Association of American, which has presented the Grantland Rice Trophy since 1956. That organization (of which I am a member and former president) voted to vacate USC’s title but not to award it to another school.

My personal preference would have been to award the trophy to Auburn, which went 13-0, won the SEC championship, but did not get a chance to play for the national championship. Auburn finished No. 2 behind USC in all the polls including the final FWAA vote that season. But I respect the decision of my fellow writers.

Assuming USC’s appeal of its NCAA sanctions will be denied, the Trojans will have been stripped of two national championships (BCS, FWAA). The Associated Press announced earlier this year that USC will be allowed to keep its 2004 title.

I don’t understand how bumping into a car is an arrestable offense. I was building a loft apartment complex in Atlanta and watched some Barbie Bimbo do the same thing. I got her tag, called the police and gave them the info. She didn’t get arrested, she got a damn ticket as was merited by the offense.

These “arrests” of georgia players are mostly laughable if they weren’t so sad. Why does Adams hate his sports programs so much? or am I to believe that UGA was voted the number one party school in the Country because ONLY the members of the athletics programs are partying?

You show me someone who went to college and DIDN’T drink before they were 21 and 8 out of 10 times I’ll show you a liar. Arresting kids for being kids is just plain stupid.

As to the suspended license? About 20 years ago my license was suspended for too many tickets in a 3 year period. I received notice that it was suspended 9 MONTHS after the fact. It took me 30 minutes to clear it up, but for 9 MONTHS I had been driving with a suspended license and had no clue because of the ineptitude of the State DOT. I had lived in the same house for at least 5 years and it was the same address on my license so it’s not like they couldn’t figure out where to send a freaking letter to.

Unless I’m mistaken, with the current laws in Georgia, anyone under 21 can have their license suspended if they are going with the flow of traffic through Atlanta (usually 75 MPH so you aren’t run off the road or impeding traffic) and get randomly pulled out of the herd. Although the speed limit is 55 you are literally taking your life in your hands if drive it.

I got the grey shirt info http://oversigning.com/testing/ and let me ask you this in honesty to you really think there are no Bama players drinking underage or guilty of moving violations in a automobile ? What should scare you is that none are being reported…none. Do you think that is possible ? ”

How2fish,

I respect your posts but have to respectfully disagree with you on this one and here’s why

Saban came to Bama in 2007. Between 2007 and summer 2008 8 players at Bama were arrested for all sorts of things, 2 of them for serious felonies and in the Jimmy Johns case a sting by the Tusc PD was set up to nail him. Additionally, the problem was so bad that the Tuscaloosa Daily news did a series of articles questioning if cops were singling out Bama players. The articles stemmed from the arrest of Rashad Johnson for allegedly pushing an undercover cop in a Tusc hotspot the Legacy. Video evidence proved Rashad did nothing of the sort, he was vindicated, and charges dropped. If the Tuscaloosa cops let Bama players get away with stuff then why were 8 players arrested over 2 years? All those arrests are the reason why Bama won the 08 Fulmer cup.

Saban laid down the hammer and started forcing transfers of players for minor things like breaking team rules. The result? We haven’t had a player arrested in over a year. It took 2 years to change the culture and get the problem children out of the program but Saban did it.

It has nothing to do with the cops laying off Bama players and everything to do with Saban booting guys for breaking team rules let alone getting arrested. He recently booted former 4 star and highly touted recruit Rod Woodson who was competing for the starting job at safety. He broke team rules which meant there were either behavioral issues or he was not doing the academic work- missing class, tutor appts, etc. and now he’s gone.

In reference to the oversigning.com using wordpress this is just some joe who started his own blog and who posts “transferred because he wasn’t good enough to play” as a reason for some players transferring. Just this guy’s opinion- in other words his own pure freaking speculation. The guy has an axe to grind and quite frankly has zero credibility.

Richt is now in his 10th year and his players are out of control with Ealey now the 8th player arrested only 2/3 of the way through the year. Don’t try to deflect what are obvious culture problems at Georgia with some stuff about Tuscaloosa police letting Bama players get away with all kinds of stuff. The clear evidence of Bama player arrests throughout 07 and 08 proves otherwise.

Tide Rising fair statements all let me ask this IF Saban cleaned house and its staying clean by merely kicking the bad apples off..why would that not be working at UGA of the 8 arrest this year as you state..4 of those players are no longer on the team. And there was no more time taken to do it that it took to gather the facts..I know from the old days some cops would give most football player a little leeway when they could..not at UGA anymore..at Bama I’m not so sure from what some of the folks I know that live there.tell me.are they being paid off ? No I don’t think that but if given the chance to turn a blind eye perhaps and I say that as someone who half of his family still lives in Bama and who spent 6 years there heck I remember when the Bear came to either Florence or Huntsville they threw parades..still 8 arrest are too many..

Tide Rising

How2fish,

I really believe that it comes down to 1) expectations set and 2) education.

One thing Saban is really big on is having professional speakers come in and educate the players on things like how to treat the opposite sex, what to do in a police encounter, consequences of actions, etc. basic common sense things that you and I may take for granted but which some of these players from lower economic/social backgrounds may have missed.

Somehow I just don’t think these things are being taught at UGA and the Ealey case illustrates it. Just basic things like he should have known to show up for his court date-otherwise he should have known a bench warrant would be issued, he should have known not to leave the scene of an accident. How and why he was taught basic things like this is bewildering.

The other thing is expectations. What the hell is he doing out at 3:30 am during fall training with the season about to start? If you set expectations that guys should be in bed at reasonable hours, that they should take care of business such as the court date, that they should keep their nose clean and avoid anything that could result in police trouble, etc. then these things won’t happen.

At Bama the expectation is straightforward- get in trouble with the law or break team rules and you’re gone- plain and simple. At Georgia apparently there is no fear of consequence, no fear of Richt, etc. If he wants to avoid future problems he has to start booting guys with regularity for the simpler, smaller stuff like attitude, behavior, etc. And he has to instill FEAR. I mean real FEAR that if you screw up even on a minor scale you’re gone. Until this happens there are going to be problems. JMHO of course.

Last. to answer your initial question cleaning house doesn’t happen overnight. The culture change takes a year or 2. Saban was still booting players and having players arrested in 08 but at that point it was beginning to be clear of expectations as the bad apples were falling away from the program. But at first it got worse before it got better. I suspect it would be the same at UGA.

Tide Rising,
Like previously stated, I don’t think it is about Richt not disciplining or educating the players. If anyone knows Athens police knows that they are “arrest happy” and looking for the spotlight. Try asking a police officer a legit question on an Athens street corner at night and watch their demeanor. They are looking for any excuse to slap cuffs on an individual to make themselves look “big”. I’m not claiming any conspiracy but I know from personal experiences and counseling said offenders.

Tide Rising I think the truth is somewhere between what Saban is doing and what LawDawg said…I’d really like to look at what the overall student body numbers are at UGA and heck Bama too in ratio to player student arrests..my understanding is that with the vaunted zero tolerance program at UGA all alcohol related issues are a arresting matter..at many schools it was a ticket. frankly is madness to me that any 18 year old can’t legally drink but it is what it is..with the 4 out of 8 gone I’m hoping we are turning the corner but only time will tell. How2fish,

I had forgotten about the new zero tolerance program at UGA in general relating to alcohol. That alone will garner the really simple, dumb arrests for underage drinking of which a lot of the dawg players have been arrested. That policy automatically will give the dawg players more arrests than at comparable schools. And if that is the zero tolerance policy of the APD in addition to the school then again its just a given that you’re going to have more arrests as will the general student population as well.

I think a lot of us are old school. More afraid of our dads then the cops- that’s how and why I stayed out of trouble in college also.
