How many South Carolina players could miss Georgia game?

It’s Friday. The season starts next Thursday and Lord, please let it get here quickly. We have just about talked this sport to death.

Because it’s Friday the floor is open to you on any topic. Keep it clean, of course.  Here are five topics just to get the party started:

1. How many South Carolina players will miss the Georgia game on Sept. 11? It’s a pretty good bet that tight end Weslye Saunders will not play in the opener with Southern Mississippi next Thursday. The NCAA has had a couple of prayer meetings (that’s Southern for “serious conversations”) with young Weslye over several issues.

Now, thanks to some good reporting by Joe Person of The State newspaper in Columbia, we learn that a bunch of Gamecocks have been living in a local hotel.

Nothing wrong with that because they get a $500 monthly allowance to live where they want. The problem is that the Whitney Hotel is not a Motel 6. It has a limo service and whoever runs the thing was letting the players live there for $450 a month. Person’s reporting revealed that using the lowest possible discount rate the hotel provides, the value of the room was, at a minimum, $1,200 a month.

It won’t shock you to know that there is a rule against that. The standard punishment here is for the players to pay the difference in what they should have paid and what they actually paid PLUS a two-game suspension. That means several South Carolina players could miss the Sept. 11 game with Georgia.

Spurrier won’t make any excuses, he never does. His attitude will be that the players knew the rules and chose not to follow them. They get $500 a month for housing and they made the choice. Spurrier doesn’t believe in baby sitting players and he’s not about to start now. But if this blows up and a season with so much promise goes quickly south, I’m not going to be surprised if he walks away.

2. Some advice to the freshmen at Florida. Don’t mess with Mike Pouncey: This much is clear. Something happened at Florida which caused two of Florida’s “Five Star” recruits–Ronald Powell and Dominique Easley–to miss part of practice on Tuesday. Coach Urban Meyer would not say why. There were reports that the two players were not happy with the way they were being pushed in practice. On Thursday Meyer said everything was “fine.”

At Florida’s media day Easley compared he and a couple of his freshmen teammates to LeBron James, Chris Bosh, and Dwayne Wade of the Miami Heat.

That’s just precious. I guess young Mr. Easley feels he and his young teammates have arrived in Gainesville to save the program that has only won 57 games and two national championships in the past five seasons.

All-America offensive lineman Mike Pouncey said that the freshmen need to talk less and play more.

“At the end of the day the freshmen need to just shut their mouths and just come play,” Pouncey told reporters when asked about the freshman class.  ”They haven’t done nothing on Saturday, and most of the fans don’t even know who they are. Until they prove themselves they just need to sit back and let the older guys play.”

Highly recruited freshmen. Don’t you just love them?

3. Splitting Michigan and Ohio State is a bad idea: There is now talk that the Big Ten might split up Ohio State and Michigan when the conference goes to divisional play in 2011. The thinking is that the two old rivals would play once in the regular season and possibly again for the Big Ten championship and a spot in the Rose Bowl. In order to do that the Ohio State-Michigan game would be moved to an earlier spot on the calendar instead of the last game of the regular season.

Bad, bad, idea.

The Big 12 screwed up and did away with the annual Nebraska-Oklahoma game when it went to divisions.  This would be an equally bad mistake. The ACC split of Miami and Florida State thinking they would play for the title. Hasn’t happened yet.

For anybody who cares, this is how I would split up the Big Ten:

BO DIVISION

Ohio State

Michigan

Iowa

Michigan State

Indiana

Purdue

WOODY DIVISION

Penn State

Nebraska

Wisconsin

Illinois

Northwestern

Minnesota

Everybody gets to keep one rivalry game from the other division, just like the SEC.

4. More trouble at North Carolina: The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, has always taken a lot of pride in conducting its athletics program the right way. This is where Dean Smith worked, for goodness sakes.

So school officials and alumni can’t be happy today to learn that the NCAA is looking into possible academic misconduct by a number of Tar Heel football players. This comes on top of the NCAA investigation into DT Marvin Austin and possible improper contact with an agent.

Now we have no idea who will be available when North Carolina takes on LSU a week from tomorrow at the Georgia Dome. This was a season with so much promise at North Carolina. Will it now start to unravel?

5. The FWAA strips USC of another championship: Pat Haden, the new athletics director at Southern California, has already sent Reggie Bush’s Heisman Trophy back to the Heisman Trust. They have stripped photos and references to Bush from Heritage Hall.

USC will return the BCS championship Trophy of 2004 if the appeal of its NCAA sanctions is denied.

Now USC will have to send back another national championship trophy, this one given by the Football Writers Association of American, which has presented the Grantland Rice Trophy since 1956. That organization (of which I am a member and former president) voted to vacate USC’s title but not to award it to another school.

My personal preference would have been to award the trophy to Auburn, which went 13-0, won the SEC championship, but did not get a chance to play for the national championship. Auburn finished No. 2 behind USC in all the polls including the final FWAA vote that season. But I respect the decision of my fellow writers.

Assuming USC’s appeal of its NCAA sanctions will be denied, the Trojans will have been stripped of two national championships (BCS, FWAA). The Associated Press announced earlier this year that USC will be allowed to keep its 2004 title.

Everyone, enjoy the Friday free-for-all. And have a great weekend.

Mutts and mutt fans, being first gives one superiority over other people, objects and places. The position carries the implication that the particular person being first, when compared to others posting here, has clear and perceivable advantage.

I am a Tech man. A true Tech man. A graduate, not a sidewalk fan. This is what Tech men do. We have the advantage. Learn to live with it. It’s the truth.

Now go get your running back out of jail. Pathetic.

this is the blow that will send Spurrier out of coaching, and on to retirement and golfing, which he apprently enjoys mroe than winning football Championships over the last decade.

Florida, Meyer & Saban’s approach grind on players, it’s the old school demean, yell, berate, wave your arms a round a lot. Phil Jackson, John Wooden, Tony Dungy never did that. Meyer & Saban ain’t got thr longevity style of coaching, that’s why they quit every 4 or 5 years. Players hate em’.

By the looks of it, we can kiss Washaun Ealey goodbye from the Georgia sideline too.

Spurrier’s 2-7 against Richt with ALL his starters, Richt’s 39-5 on the road, Richt will win the SC game, with or without suspended players from SC. If the players are suspended though, blowout victory for Georgia.

First comment from Techman is exactly why you are the most hated and despised fan base in the south. Unemployed architects and engineers galore because of the bad economy. Yeah, that GT diploma is really helping out.

Meanwhile, the UGA business grads are out working everyday and earning a good living for their families.

Ealey messed up. According to Tech man all of us UGA folks have spent time in jail?

The answer is no. That is the truth. Deal with it.

8th….how do some of you do it? You must troll the web site for being on here right when it’s put out there! I wish they would get rid of all of the USC players….No not really, but it’s a tough place to play. I still think we win in a very close game, AGAIN!!

1. That’s ok. Ealy just got arrested for being dumber than a rock. So apparently every SEC team has to trim down it’s roster…..it’s tradition maybe? Sorta like UGA players must have a suspended driver’s liscense. Q#$^!#$^!$^!#$%@#$&@. Really, Tony you should do a piece on why no UGA football players have a proper driver’s liscense.

2. Hehe, attitudes like that don’t help.

3. Yeh I agree, they should be in the same conference in a similar manner to Bama and Auburn.

4. It’s gotten kind of sad now, I feel pitty for Tar Heel fans. LSU was going to cream them in the dome regardless of all of this. But now the excuses will come flying out.

5. Geez, it must be bad news Friday. All of a sudden USC’s reign last decade is just wiped away. Glad I’m not a fan. Auburn doesn’t get the championship. Most Auburn fans I know do not want some cheap hand me down championship 6 years later.

How many dumb things does Urban Meyer have to do for people to realize what kind of jerkish behavior this guy gets away with? Anybody seen the Jeremy Fowler video? Meyer likes to try and intimidate people, bit of a bully, probably didn’t get hugged enough as a kid. Pretty bad when your 2 star freshman lose respect for Meyer, and leave practice. If you don’t show respect to players, players don’t show respect to Coaches.

There’s one major question in the South Carolina case. What’s the school affiliation of the Whitney’s owner, or whoever approved the reduced rate charged to the players? If that person is a booster, this issue could get much worse.

This happens to Urban Meyer every place he goes. After 5 years, the program blows up, and Meyer quits and moves on to another school. the players just get tired of being cussed out and demeaned. Urban Meyer has never lasted 6 years at 1 school in his entire coaching career. Players don’t like his cussing and screaming, it gets old, and it’s unnecessary. This ain’t the military.

Urban Meyers is a Bobby Knight clone.

Urban Meyers, aka Bobby Knight clone, ain’t liked by his freshman leaders. Meltdown soon to follow. He’s melting down again. The program’s in shambles. Florida going down. They have to have buy in from freshman leaders this season, and they don’t have it. Nobodies responding to Urban’s military school, I mean, football program.

Georgia’s Ealy should miss the South Carolina game, but he is first string – so won’t.

The actions of Georgia football players continue to prove that the personal quality of their recruits is not considered – only their athletic ability. Furthermore, Coach Richt does not run a strict program where personal responsibility is required where examples of bad behavior make a big enough impression to slow further transgressions.

As a rabid UGA fan, I am embarrassed. As much as I know that Ealey is the best back that we have, he should be suspended for a minimum of 4-6 games. I can’t believe this happened. Not much else that you can read into “he hit a parked car and left, has a suspended license”, it is what it is. I don’t get kids these days….I just don’t get them…..

As far as this team goes he has completely lost control.
