Countdown to No. 1: Can Alabama handle the expectations?

It’s been a fun week counting down our Top 25 teams for 2010. It will come as no surprise to you that I have Alabama at No. 1.

Yes, Alabama has to replace nine starters on defense and both of its kickers. And logically, the Crimson Tide should not be able to win a second straight national championship. Nobody has done it since Nebraska in 1994-95. But I’m putting a lot of this preseason ranking on two things:

1. Alabama has a lot of really, really good players. They played a bunch of people on defense last season and so replacing all those starters will not be as complicated as it might seem.

2. If any coach can guide his team through the mental mine field of trying to win consecutive championships, it is Nick Saban. This season, more than anything else, will be an exercise in mental toughness at Alabama. Saban and his staff do that well.

So here we go. Here is our preseason Top Five for 2010:

1. Alabama

**–It will be a good season if: The Crimson Tide goes 12-0 for the third straight regular season and reaches the SEC championship game. If that happens they will win in Atlanta again and play for another BCS title. Alabama last won back to back national championships in 1978-79.

**–It will be a disappointing season if: They stumble on the road against Arkansas on Sept 25 or at home against Florida on Oct. 2. It’s not fair, but anything less than an undefeated regular season is going to be a disappointment.

 2. Ohio State

**–It will be a good season if: The Buckeyes win their two toughest road games at Wisconsin (Oct. 16 at night) and Iowa (Nov. 20) and get another shot at an SEC team in the BCS championship game. It looks like coach Jim Tressel is finally ready to turn quarterback Terrelle Pryor loose. If Pryor plays the way he did against Oregon in the Rose Bowl, the Buckeyes are going to be hard to beat.

**–It’s will be a disappointing season if: They are not ready to play when Miami, a very athletic team, comes to the Horseshoe on Sept. 11. Lose that one and the Buckeyes will have a tough time getting to the big game. Miami has the physical talent to go to the Horseshoe and win. My CSS broadcast partner, Brady Ackerman, has already picked the Hurricanes in that game. I’m not so sure.

3. Texas

**–It will be a good season if:  Texas successfully reshapes its offense to emphasize the run and the Longhorns win back-to-back games against Oklahoma (Oct. 2 in Dallas) and at Nebraska (Oct. 16). With Gilbert Garrett at quarterback, Texas will have a more traditional, pro-style offense. Garrett came off the bench in the national championship game against Alabama and showed that he will be a good player for the Longhorns.

**–It will be a disappointing season if: The losses of quarterback Colt McCoy (45 career wins) and defensive stars like Sergio Kindle and Earl Thomas are too much to overcome. If Texas loses to Oklahoma on Oct. 2, then they could get eliminated in the division with a loss at Nebraska. A 10-2 or 11-2 record still gets Texas in a BCS bowl.

 4. Florida

**–It will be a good season if: The Gators, despite the loss of Tim Tebow and five NFL draft choices off the defense, reach the SEC championship game for the third straight season. Over the past five years Florida has recruited as well as anyone and will plug those holes with some very talented people. Also, the pressure is off. Alabama is wearing the crown and so I expect Florida to be a much more relaxed football team than it was a year ago, when the Gators were anything but relaxed.

**–It will be a disappointing season if: New quarterback John Brantley struggles and the Gators slip up somewhere other than Tuscaloosa on Oct. 2. We simply don’t know what the defense is going to do with a bunch of new faces, including new defensive coordinators Teryl Austin and Chuck Heater. How much will Florida miss long-time DC Charlie Strong, now the head coach at Louisville?

5. Boise State

**–It will be a good season if: The Broncos go undefeated for the second straight season and are rewarded with a spot in the BCS championship game. I still think it is a long shot for Boise because to get to Glendale it means all of the champions in the Big Six conferences would have to have a loss. The real question is whether or not a 12-0 Boise would go to the BCS championship ahead of a one-loss champ from the SEC, Big Ten,  ACC or Big 12?

**–It will be a disappointing season if: With 21 of 22 returning starters, the Broncos stumble out of the gate and lose to Virginia Tech on Sept. 6 in Landover, Md.  If that happens, the Broncos can still get to a BCS Bowl, maybe even the Rose, but they won’t play in the Big Game.

Florida will not finish in the top 10 without Strong & Tebow and their 9 NFL players they had last year. Last year’s team was the best Meyer will ever have, this year, with Brantley, minus Strong & Tebow, there’s simply no way they finish in the top 10.

I don’t get Tony’s point, if UGA isn’t in the top 5 because of inexepreince at QB, why is Florida in there, their guy has no starting experience in college, and has never played a Div 3AAA, 4AAAA or 5AAAA team in high school?

If experience at QB is the reason to keep Georgia out of the top 5, you have to keep Florida out too, if not, Georgia should be in there with a better O-Line, better WR’s, better RB’s, FB’s, Special Teams, and TE’s.

Man, I hope Boise State loses to Va Tech out of the gate. Ya Oregon was a pretty good win last year for them, but playing 1 ranked team a year isn’t going to cut it. I still remember the loud sound of a ‘thud’ when the highly touted Broncos came to Athens in 2005.

Alabama will not repeat, no SEC team has in 25 years. Saban followed his National Championship at LSU with a 9-3 season, same for Alabama in 2010. Saban chokes after great seasons 80% of his career. Alabama lost too many guys on defense, gave up 13 td’s in a scrimmage, can’t pass, special teams stink, and they get 6 teams coming off a bye week. Alabama also has the 15th toughest schedule in college football.

I wouldn’t bet against Mark Richt. 3rd winningest coach out of 120 teams. One of 7 coaches in HISTORY to get to 90 wins in 1st 9 seasons. Never had 2 season in a row outside the top 10 in final polls. In 2001/2006, bounced back both years in 2002/2007 with top 3 finish. Grantham was the guy Saban tried to hire twice, once recently at Miami, again at Mich St. Belin’s LB’s consistently all-conference, Lakatos’ DB’s consistently top 10 in pass efficiency. AJ, Ealey, Olson, UGA gonna average 40 points, giving up only 20, and go for over 500 yards a game, and win by average of 20 points a game.

UGA, National Champs in 2010 & 2011.

SC, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Penn St., Ole Miss, LSU (6 off of bye weeks)

Loses 3 of those 7.

Spurrier ready to retire at 65. Petrino, Saban, Meyer, never stayed more than 6 years at any school in entire career.

UGA will not lose in 2010 & 2011.

I am not going to be the head coach at Alabama. I am the head coach of the Miami Dolphins.

Having grown up in AL and being a DAWG fan, I hate as much as anyone to say UA has a good chance of repeating. They can lose to UF and still get back to Atlanta, setting up a possible trip back to the NC game. The only thing that could knock them out of the NC is a loss to UF and to Penn State. I don’t see UA losing any SEC game other than possibly UF.

OSU– lots of talent, only three tough games.
Texas–lots of talent, in spite of losing Mccoy.
UF–geez, can’t UGA catch a break? Lots of talent, though a suspect QB. If Brantley struggles, it could be tough at UF
BSU- note the irony (BS) coming out about this one-game-per-year-team. I hope VA Tech beats the snot out them, like UGA did several years ago. I will give BS credit for scheduling VA Tech, but still, it is one-game-per-year. If VA Tech plows through them maybe BS will go away for a couple of years.

Nick Saban’s the msot INCONSISTENT, up & down coach in America. Has 6, 6 or 7 win seasons. Follows big year with lousy year 80% of career. Has finished in top 10 consecutively ONCE in entire career.

Saban’s the coach LEAST LIKELY to have 2 good season in a row.

Richt’s the coach MOST LIKELY to be consistent. If any coach can win 2 in a row, it’s Mark Richt.

Richt’s finished in the top 10, 19 times in 24 seasons, top 5, 13 times, 4 top 10 finishes IN A ROW at Georgia. Never had 2 season in a row out of the final top 10, since 1986.

Despite what critics cynics & naysayers believe, Mark Richt is the coach MOST LIKELY to sustain success.

Saban’s a joke when it comes to consistency.

Gonna be toguh for Bama or Florida to go undefeated. Don’t see it happening. That could make for a Big 12 (Texas or Oklahoma) versus a Big 10 (Ohio State) in the BCSCG. Boise State only has to win one big game to go undefeated. If any SEC team does manage to go undefeated, then they will certainly have earned a shot at the title.

By the way, Bucky and/or Goalie Head, why do you have to constantly try and tear other coaches/programs down? Why not just build your own team up? It’s very juvenile and shows an obvious sign of envy that you have for superior coaches and programs. Sad. Very sad.

Tony, Tony, Tony…Ohio State. I think the heat has gotten to your noggin. I took a look at the results of the last few years. OSU is 35 and 4 vs the “Big 10″, 15-0 vs assorted patsys, and a staggering 3-7 vs the SEC,PAC 10 and Big 12. Not exactly the stuff legends are made of. Yet the pundits drink that KoolAide every year.

All the critics threw Richt under the bus in 2001 & 2006, both times Richt proved them wrong anf finished in the top 3. Now, after a “bad” 8-5 season (not bad compared to Saban’s 6 win seasons), critics cry again. Same ole same old, some things never change, some people never learn.

If Richt called people “pimps” and was voted 1 of the top 10 most hated people in all of sports, sports writers would love him for his bad boy image. I guess we can’t all be like Saban. Sports writers love guys like Saban, while guys like Richt, win more games than them.

I agree Beast that it will be difficult for Florida or Bama to go undefeated. Whoever loses on Oct 2 still will have a chance to get into the BCS title game by winning out and going 12-1.

I believe the Gators will be 10-2 and Bama 11-1 with both winning their divisions.

Bucky; any stats on what Richt’s record is while at UGA against top 5 and top 10 teams? You can throw those numbers you cited around ALL you want, and it may mean that GA is verly likely to have a 9 win season. But go ahead…check his record against top 10 teams. Certainly not stellar!

Ohio State will lose 3 games (Miami, Iowa, and probably Wisconsin). Texas will lose to Nebraska and again in the Big 12 (sic) Championship Game. It is really hard to finish in the Top 5 with two losses these days.

I’d look for teams like TCU and Nebraska to sneak up into the top 5. Maybe a surprise ACC team.

Bucky….Not only are you beyond delusional about UGA, you come off as not really paying attention to college football. Saban’s the coach LEAST LIKELY to have 2 good season in a row?????? Correct me if I am wrong but didnt BAMA just have 2 straight undefeated regular seasons? Maybe I missed something.

BAMA has loaded up on talent and everyone knows that Saban is one of if not the best coach in the game. He won a championship at UA in 3 years….something Richt has not be able to do in 9 years and something UGA hasnt been able to do in almost 30 years.

Think what you want about Saban as a person. I could care less. Fact is….He wins and will have BAMA competing for a championship for years to come. Same goes for Meyer at UF.

Woh, you swapped the order on us Tony!

5 Boise St – Sigh, absolutely overrated. Probably about 5X’s to high. The biggest tragedy in college football last year was the horrible paring of TCU and Boise St in the Fiesta. Boooo

4 Florida – Hmm, overrated but only because I don’t think they will be ranked #4 at the end of the year. Simply put, very talented but very young. But I think it’s the Florida name ranked #4, not the team.

3 Texas – I just don’t know, Bama pretty much handled them easier than most SEC teams. They’ll have a lot of wins though because there isn’t many people that will stand in their way. So I guess they’re ranked appropriately.

2 OSU – Yeh, they should be pretty good. They pretty much have ruled the Big 10 since Tressel got there. But there are a couple of teams that could knock them off their pedestal this year. But come on, what do you think will happen if they get to the BCS champ game and play another SEC team? What will be horrible is if they get there and wind up playing an undfeated Boise St team (while everyone else has 1 loss). But that’s just hard to see, eventually schedule strength has to come into play.

1 Bama – They are king of the mountain right now. Great running game, great defense, what’s not to like? Their schedule may get the better of them. I see Bama beating the big boy regulars like Florida and LSU, but for some reason I think they will drop a couple they aren’t supposed to like South Carolina or Auburn. Should be a really fun year in the SEC, especially the west. Can’t wait for it to get here!

And Go Dawgs!

I agree that Bama should be #1. You win the BCS last year and you should start this year #1, no doubt. But, UF is way over-rated IMO. You don’t just replace a guy like Tebow. Plus, the loss of Strong as DC is huge. I’m not saying UGA should be ranked any higher than they are. In fact, maybe a spot or two lower.

Alabama returns a very good offense, which should help offset the losses on defense while they replace some personnel on that side of the line of scrimmage. Boise State will lose against Virginia Tech taking them out of contention after week one. Should be another great year for college football. Thanks Tony. Boise who play in the WAC should not have a shot at the National Championship. The WAC is marginally better than some FCS conferences (TheCAA which Georgia State is joining is better) yet they get all this love because they play ONE team from a BCS conference and then go undefeated against the Sisters of Mercy and Reno High.

Anyway, I’ll be a Hokie fan when they meet in DC. Tech, tech, VPI!!!!

That’s the weakest preseason Top 5 in the history of college football. Every single one of those teams has major issues which in any normal year would knock them out of top 5 cosideration, except maybe for Bama.

Bama will be good but will drop 2. You can see this coming from 100 miles away. Its not even worth talking about.

Florida has a new QB, new defense, and a head case coach that might be in the looney bin by season’s end. Plus, I think their arrogance and lack of class has really pizzed people off the past two seasons. What goes around will come around for these clowns. Book it.

Texas has a new QB too.

Ohio State is a laughably overrated phony and I am offended that I even have to read about these pretenders. They have done nothing…I said NOTHING…since 2002 other than skate through a pathetic Big 10 and get demolished by the SEC or USC. I’m sick of hearing about this program. They will be the Notre Dame of the 10’s.

Boise State? LMAO. That’s all I have to say about that.

RXDawg, I agree that Texas this year is ranked a little high, however, Bama was seriously struggling with Texas UNTIL Colt McCoy got hurt. When that happened, the game did a complete 180. Not saying that Texas surely would have won with McCoy but the game would most likely have come down to the wire.

I fail to understand why Tony insinuates that Chuck Heater as a new guy on the UF coaching staff which is false. He has been at UF as long as Meyer, and he and Dan McCarney served as Charlie Strong’s key associates with the defense. Remember, Charlie was the Defensive Coordinator in 2007 and the defense was terrible. The players are the key. My concern is not so much the coaches as it is the new starters on defense; however, this year most have significant experience which was not true in 2007. Also, how is it that the new defense coordinator from the NFL is seemingly so much more experienced than Austin at UF according to some folks at UGA.
As for Tebow being gone and Brantley now at the helm – so what. Every program eventually goes through a change. As I remember, McElroy at BAMA did not get any respect last year before the season srted, and BAMA di very well with him at the helm.

I also find it interesting that so many folks want to toss bricks at BAMA and UF and pick them as loosers this season. BAMA is going to be athreat as long as Saban is at the helm, and the same is for the Gators with Meyer. I do not know where UF will end up this year, but for those of you who predict a 2007 type season you may be disapointed with the final results. This UF Team will take nobody for granted.
I am concerned with the UF team only, and I do not really care one bit what happens in Athens, Knoxville, Auburn, etc. The Gators have enough on their plate.
I wish ALL fervent college football fans well, and I hope your teams fare well.

Go Gators.

Well, I really tried to plug into football coverage in ACC country up here, but today was the last straw. Had to listen to sports radio the entire drive in ramble on and on about how Ed Cunningham at ESPN said UNC is a national title contender. Are you serious? Had to come back to a decent place to talk football. Only way an ACC team is playing for the title is if they’re undefeated and I don’t think any team in the ACC is good enough to do that.

UF – Excited because this is the first season in a while that will be fun. Pressure is gone and we can just enjoy this team. WR and DL are the biggest question marks for us right now. I’d argue the OL is one of the best in the country and I’m very happy w/ Brantley and the backs we have. The secondary will be good and the LB’s will be fast, so the keys to the UF season in my view will be the play of the WRs and DLs. Lots of young talent for sure, but they need to get experience and ‘learn’ how to play/win.

Bama – I see similarities to UF in 2007. I don’t think the result will be the same as that UF squad, but I see Bama’s offense being really, really good, and the defense having to plug a lot of young guys in like the Gators did in 07. The difference for Bama is that some of these guys have played where as those Gator inserts were totally green. It’ll take a few weeks, but I think the Bama defense will figure things out. The key to that team in my mind is Hightower. You know what the offense will do, but the usual cliche of defense wins ‘chips rings true. If Hightower has that defense flying high, then they’re the team to beat.

UGA – Very interested to see Murray perform. AJ, Ealey, and the TE (who’s name escapes me) are great players and real threats. They key to their offense is going to be the play of Murray. An honest UGA fan has to admit they’re a little nervous about what’s gonna happen with him. As a UF fan, I have nerves about Brantley, but they’re somewhat calmed by the fact that he’s a junior who’s been there for a while and doesn’t go to Columbia at the beginning of the season. USF will be a decent test, but it’s not the same as at Columbia under 125 degrees. Murray doesn’t have luxuries afforded him right now. If he struggles, watch out. If he does well, then UGA vaults into contending for the East. Much the same as Brantley and UF. The defense will be better than last year, which probably isn’t saying much, but I think there will still be growing pains. In a few years, the junkyard dawgs may return, but I just don’t see it this year. They’ll be improved and hungry, but I don’t know if the personnel is there just yet for that system. Just like it took Bama a few years to make the switch, I think Grantham needs what many of us fans don’t really want to offer: time.

Again, just my humble opinion. More than happy to have logical and intelligent discussion/banter back and forth.

Go Gators.

bama wont repeat and will not go undefeated. its way too hard to repeat. miami couldnt do it when they lost to ohio st and usc couldnt do it when they lost to texas. its too hard. and while bama is still good on defense, 9 new starters doesnt help. when usc lost cushing, rey maluga, etc all the analysts said no big deal, and they struggled even though they reurned entire secondary. no matter how talented its hard to reload the same talent regardless of who u r especially playing in the sec

Spot on about the Gators, Tony. We are all hopeful that Brantley comes out strong and the team immediately adopts him as their leader. One thing Meyer has been genius at over his career is adapting an offense to score points around his QB. We have the fastest running backs returning behind the most experienced offensice line we’ve had in years. That may give Brantley some time to adjust.

Six retunring starters on defense and another three that saw plenty of PT last season. We have 4 star recruits two spots deep at pretty much every position. They will be fast and cause lots of turnovers like they have in the past and give our offense great field position.

Alabama and Virginia Tech have similar issues: 2 fine RBs for each team returning to an experienced offense, pretty good but could be better QBs, 2 new kickers and punters, and 9 new starters on defense (Virginia Tech has a couple of partial-year starters, so they are closer to 8.) I brought up VaTech because of the Boise St. question. Bud Foster is presently working a miracle with the Hokies’ D right now if they are stopping Kellen Moore & company in the opener. Boise St. has 20 of 22 starters returning, and by far the highest % of lettermen overall returning at 91.7% (South Carolina and Arkansas are 2nd and 3rd at 83.1%.) ‘Bama is #109, with 63.1%. Penn St. is only one spot ahead at 63.2%. Either a true soph or a former walk-on RS soph will start at QB. against ‘Bama on 9/10.

Boise may or may not go undefeated, but I don’t see undefeated champions for the SEC and ACC. The ACC Coastal and SEC East and West will be tough sledding.

The % of lettermen returning was complied by Phil Steele.

I think THIS year’s Boise St team is going to be a lot better than people give them credit for. They lost one starter – CB Kyle Wilson, and he’s been holding his own with the Jets while Revis is out.

I think they will beat VA Tech. They’re used to playing in big games now, and they are a lot more physical than people think. Do they deserve a shot at the title? At this point I’d say yes. You can’t fault a team for the conference they’re in, and it’s not like Boise doesn’t try to upgrade their non-conference schedule. Keep in mind also that even though they play in a weaker conference they totally dominate their conference, rarely if ever is their a close game, so they beat lesser oponents the way you would expect any top 5 team to. The fact is they ask a lot of teams but get turned down because their is no upside to playing a team like Boise. If you beat them like a drum then you were supposed to. Win a close game, more people will question how good your team is rather than give them credit for playing a tough game. Lose to them and your team’s season circles the drain. How many people wrote Oregon off after last year’s opening game? All the ducks did was go out and win the PAC 10.
At some point it stops being a “fluke” that they beat BCS teams.

Greg McElroy and Tyrod Taylor, “pretty good but could be better QBs.” Very different players. Here are the stats comparisons:

McElroy – 198/325, 2,508 yds, 60.9%, 17 TD, 4 INT, 7.7 yds/att, 140.5 Passer Rating
Taylor – 136/243, 2,311 yds, 56.0%, 13 TD, 5 INT, 9.5 yds/att, 149.4 Passer Rating

McElroy is the embodiment of a steady QB who doesn’t make many mistakes. He led his team to the BCS championship.

Taylor is sometimes spectacular, but his 56% completion included 4 games under 50%, 0 games of 60-69%, and 3 games over 70%. He is a dual-threat, and he had 28 sacks in 2009. His worst games were against Alabama (83.2 PR, 5 sacks), East Carolina (95.0 PR), UNC (106.6 PR, 3 sacks) and Nebraska (116.4 PR, 4 sacks).

Either Bama, Auburn, LSU…and I think MSU is a long shot….will win the West. Being homophobic or insulting will make no difference for determining the winnner of the SEC this year. In the East, Georgia will win if their QB plays at a high level early and continues playing that way all year. SC will win if their QB plays smart and their OL is highly improved. Florida will win if the highly talented freshman contribute and Brantley does not get hurt. So, boys, it is obviously a toss up as to who wins the East or the West. We all have opinions, and that is what makes this fun. None of us truly “knows” what will happen this season. Injuries, weather, and asking kids age 18-22 to play well week in and week out all can play havoc on a team.

As for ‘Bama-they may have as much or more talent than what graduated on defense. What they won’t have is that experience. That can be huge as we all know. Being incredibly talented does not always translate to doing well. I don’t know if the offense can be counted on to outscore other teams, so that D better grow up in a hurry.

The folks in Columbus are high on this team. Their QB is a great talent, their D is supposed to be fantastic, so they certainly may be lined up for a run to the championship game.

Texas reloads as well as anyone. Gilbert should do well. They and Florida seem to be in similar situations. Everyone has to rebuild occasionally, yet these guys seem to just load up with talent again and again.

As for Boise, I admit to being biased. I just don’t know how good they really are. If they blow out VT in the opener, I will start leaning their way. Give teams a whole off season to think about one game and you just never know how they will respond.

Thanks for doing this Tony. I, personally, look forward to your column during the season as well.

Hey Goalie Head,

GA sucks and FL doesn’t, that is the reason that they are ranked higher as they should be. You act like their program is the same as that lack luster program at GA that has not won JACK since 1980!

Unreal that you would even think that! FL has 3 NC’s and two within the last 5 years and you want to know why Tony has them ranked in the top 10!

Gators win the East again in 2010 and will mow GA down again in Jax. GA is not a threat to anyone in the East this year, trust me and everyone else that does not have them ranked as a top 10 program.

Give us a break!

Always amusing with moronic comments from posters like Bucky and Goalie Head.

My biggest concern this year is Boise State. With virtually everyone returning from an undefeated BCS team last year, if they beat VT in the first game, they’ll be odds-on favorites to finish the season undefeated. Here’s their schedule:
Mon, Sept 6 * Virginia Tech*
Sat, Sept 18 * @ * Wyoming
Sat, Sept 25 Oregon State
Sat, Oct 2 * @ * New Mexico State
Sat, Oct 9 Toledo
Sat, Oct 16 @ San Jose State
Tue, Oct 26 Louisiana Tech
Sat, Nov 6 Hawaii
Fri, Nov 12 @ Idaho
Fri, Nov 19 Fresno State
Fri, Nov 26 @ Nevada
Sat, Dec 4 Utah State

With the possible exception of Oregon State – which Boise plays at home – this schedule is clearly lacking. Vandy could win the rest of these games.

I hope the good news is that IF Boise ends up in the NC game, the outcry will be enough to mandate a playoff system.

Here’s to a fun and exciting season.

GO GATORS!

NoGaGator,
You may well be right. I do think if they get past VT then they’ll certainly be undefeated. That would most likely mean any SEC team would get shut out of the big game. I can’t see anyone form the SEC making it through unblemished this year. Ohio State and Boise State in the BCSCG? If it happens, I’ll be rootin’ for OSU.

The M.O. of dog fans is to talk down UF at every turn with points they HOPE is the case and with the matter of fact nature in acting that it will be the case. Its all done with a complete lack of knowledge of college football, florida’s coaches, Gator players and pretty much anything in football outside of having to do with UGA.

It gets worse every year and more comical with each and every failure of your team to back up your bravado and with reality kicking in every time UF proves your talk was nothing but reckless hope and BS.

It’s gotten to a point that I actually feel sad for UGA fans. I feel bad too for the many great Dog fans out there that there are people like Patrick/bucky/goalie head—whatever new name he’ll come up with next– just time and time and time again make the dognation as whole look like complete idiots. This guy is so dumb he actually thinks he make sense and he is so insecure that he must to continue to write the same BS that is the most irrelevant BS sane and rational people have ever heard.

I think UGA should change their names from the “bulldogs” to the “broken records” in honor of their most out spoken fans.

for #1 Modern era

Your point is well taken. I’m a Bama fan, but think the OU teams of the 50s (Wilkinson), and the Switzer teams of the 70s, take a back seat to no one. I’ve never understood why they’ve received to little recognition.

as to 2010

I think it is possible for Bama to repeat. Here are my reasons:

(a) Three of their toughest games (PSU, UF, and AU) are at home. PSU is dealing with a lot of rebuilding issues on offense. UF has a lot of question marks on offense, and is adjusting to a new DC. AU may be the toughest team on the schedule, but still have some depth issues on defense. If AU can get to the end of November without a lot of walking wounded, then Bama may be in for a long day.

(b) Replacing the started on defense is a little over played because of the number of players Bama typically rotates during a game (i.e. Darius was not a starter for much of last season). The seconday is the biggest challenge for the coaching staff, but the talent is there.

(c) The offense should be improved enough to take some of pressure off of the defense and special teams/

dawgfan,

Ohio State has certainly had their troubles with the SEC but likewise Michigan has had a pretty good amount of success against the SEC.

We all love to pick on Ohio State because of a few sec blowouts over them but just remember that every year and every team is different. Ohio State did beat a great miami team in 2002 for the title and that was a miami team that people were saying was a dynasty. They were defending champs and had something like a 23 game winning streak going into that title game. It had a controversial ending of course but bottom line is that OSU did in fact play toe to toe with Miami.

Also, everybody remembers how dominating and powerful those Nebraska teams were in the mid 90s-just spanking people including sec teams like Florida and Tenn. left and right. And I mean downright buttwhoopings. What people forget is that before Nebraska lost a close title game in 93 against FSU and then broke through in 94 they were a lot like the way people regard Ohio State today. They had lost something like 8 bowl games in a row and most of those losses were blowouts. They had zero respect from other conferences the way OSU gets zero respect from SEC fans. But OSU has gotten better. They lost to Texas 2 years ago in the Fiesta bowl but that was a game that OSU physically dominated and shoulda, coulda won. Evan Texas fans will tell you that they were shocked in the way OSU physically dominated the line of scrimmage. Don’t let yesteryear cloud your judgement. The buckeyes have gotten better and are a team to be reckoned with.

13 NATIONAL TITLES – 22 SEC TITLES!!!

It’s great to be ranked #1 – even if it is pre-season.

With that said – it’s NOT about the wins – it’s all about the losses!!!!

– Easiest Path to NT game – Ohio State
– Teams to beat in the SEC – EAST – Florida, WEST – Alabama
– Dark Horse team – LSU in the WEST, Georgia in the EAST
Watch out for LSU – Defense will be better – Running game should be better – and if they get QB play – they will be a handfull.

Will Bama repeat? Just might do it – and cautiously optimistic – but I doubt it – history is not on our side – and while we have the athletes – we have too many new faces in key starter positions.
IF we can cone together as a team early – watch out.

LSU? – This could be Les Miles best team – don’t laugh – just wait and see.

Georgia – Sure are a lot of IF’s on this team. IF Grantham…IF the 3/4 …… IF Aaron Murray ………….IF turn overs …….IF LB depth…….IF the new D-LINE…….. see what I mean?

With that said – I really like this team and the attitude in Athens. These guys seem to can’t wait to get on the field.
I say UGA is undefeated until Florida.

What Dawg Fans were saying in…

August 1997 – UF has no chance now that they lost Danny Wuerffel. The last 7 games have been a fluke and UGA will return to dominance! (well, y’all did win the game that year)

August 2001 – The streak is over now that we have Richt. He owned the Gators when he was at FSU. (Richt’s career record is 2-7)

August 2002 – The streak is over! The gators cannot win without Spurrier (UGA is 2-6 since SOS left. That includes a win over lame duck Zook)

August 2010 – The streak is over! The Gators cannot win without Tebow and Strong!

Anyone see a pattern here?

Tide Rising

August 20th, 2010

BamaStan,

You are right on all counts. History is definitely not on our side and of great concern is our kicking game.

As for the dawgs there are a lot of ifs-freshman qb, 6 new defensive starters, lb depth, etc. But they do have a great O-line which can anchor a team, superman wr AJ Green, Ealey is gonna be a good back, and in Athens I see a refreshing new optimism with new coaches. It may take them several games or a year to fully adjust to the new 3-4 but they should certainly be better this year. I’m pegging 10 wins for the dawgs if Murray can manage games and minimize mistakes. I still have the gators winning the east though.

Same with us. 10 wins but I think we drop a game or 2 in the regular season. Florida game is a toss up and somebody is going to upset us- I’m guessing Ole Miss or Carolina. SEC champ could well be a 2 loss team.

I will not defend Goalie Head or Bucky because they give delusional a whole new level of meaning. However, Gator fans repeatedly said that the ONLY reason UGA beat them in 2007 was because Tebow had a bum shoulder. UGA fans countered with the argument that he did not play all 22 positions, but Gator fans could not admit that it had nothing to do with Tebow. You can’t have it both ways!

UF will still have a very good team this year, but you cannot tell me that you will not take a big hit in losing a player of Tebow’s caliber. Brantley may be good, but that remains to be seen at this point.

Paul in RDU,

We’re a little lucky in catching Penn State in what may be a down year for them. 3 straight 11 win seasons. Hard to sustain that kind of momentum and they did lose a good number of key starters. They are still a physically tough team though with a lot of good talent back. They got a coach who has won a couple games too. We’ve had a great series with Penn State through the years and I’m headed back up to state college next year for a game. Been there before. Had a great time and the country around PSU is beautiful. Great atmosphere up there for college football.

I don’t remember if Tony had Wisconsin in the top 25. I think and hope he did. That’s another pretty decent big 10 team. TB may have been a little bit of a homer in having so many SEC and ACC teams in the top 25. He may have left out some decent western teams like Oregon State and maybe a MWC team or 2.

this tiresome and sometimes shameful conjecture on this forum needs to be banned. We should be expending our energies on more important topics. Such as:

Question – What if Robert E. Lee had available a squadron of A-10s at Gettysburg?

Answer – The SEC would be comprised of 160 teams. There would be a two game pre-season, then a ten game regular season. This would be followed by a playoff that ends with a championship game the week after the conclusion of the NBA finals.

TR,

I feel the PSU game will go like the Va Tech game last year. We will dominate statistically but only win by 14 or so points. Oppressive, sweltering heat coupled with a brand new QB and linebackers will be their undoing. BAMA’s defensive and special teams mistakes will keep the score respectable.

G8R GRAD,

We did it in 99 winning in Gainesville and then 34-7 in the seccg. But that doesn’t really matter since its just history. Its really tough to beat a top 5 team twice in one season. FSU found that out in 96.

I’m hoping that if we win the 1st game and are fortunate enough to win the west that we would play Carolina or UGA in the seccg. It would be easier to beat one of them one time then to beat the gators twice. It can be done but like I said. Its quite a tall task to have to beat Florida twice in one season let alone once.

They will probably win the Big Ten but not go for an NC. With the one or two loses they will get overlooked due to the history in the big games.

G8R GRAD,

Yep. That’s it exactly. I just think that the balance is so good in the sec this year, especially in the west, that a 2 loss SEC champion will probably occur this year. Now if we could beat you guys twice then its very possible we could lose only 1 game in what looks like a minefield of a schedule to me. The regular season florida game in my mind is a tossup but amongst the rest of our games someone will upset us. But like I said that’s quite a task to beat UF twice in one season.

07 where LSU won it with 2 losses is a once in 40-50 year occurrence. There will be at least one other bcs team like OU-Texas that goes one loss or less and same with Ohio State so my thinking is that a 2 loss sec team will get left out. I just don’t see a big 12 or big 10 winner likewise having more than 1 loss. And then there is Boise of course which might go unbeaten- a 2-3 game season for them with VT and Oregon State and Fresno St. to a much lesser extent.

DP

dawgfan, the reason I couldn’t believe a Georgia fan would disparage Ohio State’s program as irrelevant is because if you asked 100 college fans without a connection to either school who had the better football program between Ohio State and Georgia, Georgia wouldn’t get a vote. In the last decade they have won a BCS championship game and played in 2 others, last year they went 13-1 and finished 2nd in the final poll and a Georgia fan disparages them? The best 10 year period in Georgia football history doesn’t match up to Ohio State’s last 10 years. And the long-term football history of the 2 schools is a complete mismatch.

Alabama should be #1 and Florida should be #2. They will play for the SEC Championship again this year, and the winner of that game will win the national championship. You may as well put them at 1 and 2. The SEC has won the last four national championships, and aren’t getting any weaker. The SEC may be seeing a wider gap in stellar teams, but that’s only because Alabama and Florida are widening the gap by becoming the two best coaching, recruiting, special teams play, NFL feeder schools, etc. etc. etc. in the country. We are the company that we keep and we are also reflective of our invitations to great events and activities. These things make up we are.

With that in mind …………..GT has been to three major bowls in the last 50 years and I am counting the Citrus, although back in the day ( 1990 ) it was a secondary deal …….formerly the mighty Tangerine Bowl. Three majors and they did win one and the 90 NC along with two or three other schools, depending on what newspaper that you read.

All the GT bloggers ( kids ) act like GT is some historically great program. In a way they are. GT has been to three major bowls since about the mid 1950s and for a football team that did enjoy modest success in the 40s and 50s, that is pathetic.

“We are the company that we keep” and GT is not keeping company with any major bowls over 10-20 year spans like UGA is ( three Sugar Bowls in 9 years and 2- Cap One Bowls and 2- Outbacks)and when GT bailed out on the SEC, they began their ever continuing downward spiral.

Bama has questions on defense with only 2 starters returning, “They are going to win the MNC.”
And Florida has all kinds of questions ” Lets put them at #4.”

What are these “SEC rules” I keep reading on the blogs? Is it the officiating that is set up to promote the BCS Championship Game? The Big Ten used to play only 9 games and allowed participation only in the Rose Bowl, and then not 2 years in a row. Then Michigan went to the Orange bowl in 1975. Notre Dame had a rule that they couldn’t even go to a bowl game until the 1969 season.

AltamahaDawg,

The biggest rule change was the celebration penalty being changed from being assessed after the play to being assessed for that play. So if the Terrance Cody taking off his helmet after the UT block penalty had been called last year it would have been a mute point since Bama would have been given the ball and assessed 15 yards after the play. If that same play happened this year of course they would penalize Bama 15 yards, UT would retain possession of the ball and be able to rekick for the win.

The biggest impact will be if a player is highstepping or celebrating in some way as he nears the goal line. If the flag is thrown then rather than be assessed on the extra point or kickoff the td would be called back. This is a bad decision and is going to result in another controversial celebration call similar to the AJ Green penalty or the Jake Locker penalty.

The SEC overreacted to the criticism that Bama won the game vs UT and people were mad that UT didn’t get a rekick because Cody pulled his helmet off before the play was over. All they did was open up a can of worms. Things were fine the way they were and in the future we are sure to see a poor call affect a highly emotional game because some running back started celebrating right before breaking the goal line.

Bucky – If you are trying to say that Mark Richt is a better coach than Nick Saban, I highly question your judgement. How many National/SEC championships does Nick Saban have vs. Mark Richt? 2-0 and 3-2 respectively. I concede that Mark Richt has a better bowl record than Nick Saban. Both coaches have done an excellent job at their schools. However, at the end of the day, if I had my choice of Mark Richt or Nick Saban to coach my team, I would choose Saban without hesitation! Tide Rising: I know I’m a tad late, but I disagree wholeheartedly with your defense of the ButtEyes (lol I just can’t resist that one, I know it’s juvenile).

Yes, Ohio State has a long winning tradition as does the Big 10 in general. However, that pretty much ended when the ’90’s did. There is no longer any parity between the Big 10 (or Little 11 as I am wont to call them) and the SEC.

Yes, Tressel beat Miami. It was an awesome win. I was a lone voice in the dark predicting that win. LOL I won a lot of money off it. how ever, since then the Big 10 has gotten really weak. I feel confident that Boise State or Utah could win that conference were they in it.

When you play weak teams week in and weak out, it doesn’t take the toll on your players that it does when you are playing barely house trained monsters every game. The SEC fields 12 teams of monsters on the offensive and defensive lines. There is no matching speed if you don’t have speed. You can’t coach against it. There was no “magic” to Alabama last year. They had a decent QG, some decent recievers, an awesome running back, and then a squad of monsters that just physically beat the hell out of the opponents until they whooped them into submission. they had the speed in the secondary to keep up with the opponents receivers. Saban didn’t run any fancy offense. He didn’t have to. In a conference noted for speed and strength, he had “the mostest.” It was a beautiful thing to see.

Now the Big 10 gets those corn fed mid west boys and they are no powder puffs, but they don’t get the SPEED. Our (SEC) 7′19″ 983 lb linemen are only slightly slower than their QB’s and backs (ours too for that matter). You can’t coach against that, you have to PLAY against that. SEC QB’s and backs know that they can’t dally around stutter stepping and back tracking waiting for a hole. Unless they want to get crushed, they gotta GO. And they do. it’s a different brand of ball.

I keep hoping the Big 10 will get back into form, but so far I haven’t seen any indication of it. The only way I see to keep the Nat’l Champion from not being an SEC team is to not have the SEC Champion in the Nat’l Championship game.

Bama is clearly the team to beat and we’ll get a preview of how good they’re going to be against Penn State. However they do play Florida, Auburn and LSU and could lose to any of them if they don’t bring their A game.

Boise State would be 8 and 4 if they played in the SEC

Ohio State won’t even win the big ten

Texas will not be as good as last year…..

Florida will be good…. but not like the last two years. They will lose two…. Alabama and either Fla St or UGA

UGA will be better but go 10 and 2 with close loses to Auburn and Florida or South Carolina. The Florida game will be real close either way and they will not lose to the bugs in Athens.

While I can’t see into the future to see how teams will be ranked at the end of the year. I would want (being a Georgia fan) to be ranked #1 going into the Tech game with them being ranked #2.

I do believe Alabama, Ohio State, and Florida are getting a lot of love in the preseason with Alabama deserving the love. As much as we would not like for it to be so, the SEC officials will follow form and determine the outcome of some very important games. It’s sad, but it is the SEC way. The teams in favor have been Florida (Arkansas), LSU (Georgia), and Alabama (any team they are playing).

While these preseason polls give us fans something to talk about, the BCS has it right by not putting a poll out until October. By then all teams have some wins and losses and the poll actually means something.

How2fish,

I take no offense that people think Richt is a better coach than Saban because he has a higher overall winning % and has been more consistent. Keep in mind though that Saban had coached at 2 dead end destinations like Toledo and Mich State and so his overall winning % is going to be lower than Richts. Comparing apples to apples though and looking at Saban’s winning % at his 2 sec stops he is 75% and 80% for a slightly higher % than Richt at 76%. And his 3 sec titles and 2 bcs titles in 8 years of taking on not 1 but 2 rebuilding jobs is better than 2 sec titles and 0 bcs titles in 9 years.

But I don’t get that some of you don’t like him because of “character” issues. So he changed his mind about leaving Miami and taking the Bama job. So what? He wouldn’t be the first coach to do so.

Oversigning? So what? He plays with 85 scholly players like everyone else. And he knows the #s on his team and the likely attrition for all sorts of reasons better than you, me, or anyone else.

Greyshirting? So what? 2 players have to greyshirt this year and I think 1 had to do so last year. Big freaking deal. I would rather 1 or 2 players greyshirt knowing this was a possibility than play with 13 and 17 fewer scholly players last year as UT and AU did. That’s 30 young men that didn’t get to go live the dream of playing big time college football because a coach didn’t manage his numbers correctly. Which is worse? That 1 or 2 players have to delay enrollment by 1 semester or that 13 or 17 young men don’t get to go to college to play D1 football?

And as far as character goes I’m happy with the character Saban instills in his young men. He kicked out a lot of bad apples his first year in 2007 and since then the arrests have practically disappeared. Want to know the character of a program? We haven’t had a player arrested in 13 months now. Notta one. Now THAT is character.

here is my take on the University of Florida’s football program.

(A) Tebow. as an Alabama fan, I’m glad the guy graduated. I think that all-in-all, he had something like twelve years of elgibility.

(B) I think that Meyer(s) made a tactical error in 2009, by placing roughtly 98% of the offense on Tebow’s shoulders. The tandum of Saban/Smart figured that one out, and voila’ the 2009 SECCG.

(C) Meyer(s) won’t make that same mistake again.

re: Sabans’ “character”

I was living in south Florida in 2006 when Saban had his infamous “I will not be the next coach at Alabama” press conference.

I don’t activily follow the NFL, and can’t explain why I followed that story. But Saban, and his mannerisms made me think that the story might not be that off-target afterall. I was watching a guy who was clearly uncomfortable talking with the media about that topic. He was two weeks away from completing the NFL regular season, and wanted to discuss nothing else

The aftermath was unbelievable. Talk shows in the Miami area did nothing but crucify Saban at every opportunity. The comments made re: the citizens of Alabama would not be allowed under most PC guidelines.. However, rednecks are exempt from PC protection.

I became a Saban fan at that time. I don’t even like the guy (think he is an arrogant SOB), but can’t have Dbags like Dan LaFever trashing my bretheren.

3rdn8,

Like anything the news media often gives a distorted view of what actually happened. And in Saban’s case they always disliked him because he was always gruff towards the media and hated dealing with them-it was a waste of time in his view. What happened was just their way of getting back at him.

Dolphins owner Wayne Heizengua himself said that Saban left on good terms with him and kept him appraised after the pro season ended as to where his mind was at and what he was thinking. This was from Heizenga himself. You just wouldn’t know it though because the media is like a pool of hungry sharks in a feeding frenzy.

The truth of the matter is that when bama first approached Saban he refused to speak with Bama and told his agent he wouldn’t talk to them till after the season. When he said he wouldn’t be the coach at bama it was because he assumed as most rational people did that Bama would then get Rich Rod. The media just doesn’t like to point that out.

We have a freshman QB WHO HAS YET TO TAKE A SNAP in a NCAA Football game.

We have a defense that is learning a new scheme.

We have a DECENT O-Line and a DECENT running game.

The only thing I feel confident about with this team are the special teams and WR AJ Green. AJ Green and Drew Butler have proven to me that they can deliver on a regular basis. Everything else is a question mark.

I mean not even David Greene and Matt Stafford won 10 games their first year as a starter. Stafford in particular was downright awful in some games his freshman year until he put it all together towards the end of that season. And Murray has nowhere near Matt Stafford’s ability.

Until I see the production on the field, I will keep my standards realistic with this team. Considering all the question marks, 8 or 9 wins would be a great season.

He’s tough on players? Isn’t he SUPPOSED to be tough on players? I realize I’m considered old now, but I went to school back in the day when paddling was not only legal, it was the norm. And our football coach ALWAYS found an excuse to give his players a lick or two each year. He was a HUGE dude to. Made Arnold Schwarzenegger look like a sissy (before Arnie turned old lol). He had a special paddle with holes drilled in it to cut down the wind resistance.

There was none of that “Coach disrespected me. I need my mommy to come dry my tears” crap back then. Football is a MAN’S game, not a sissy soccer he touched me sport. Ass chewing’s come with the territory. I don’t know how old you are, but the best moment for me in College football is when Woody Hayes punched that sissy from another team for taunting him. Yeah that was sweet wasn’t it? Maybe Mack Brown should have thought of that when he was hanging 70 points on his opponents. Maybe somewhere in the back of his tiny little mind when he was up 30 or 40 to ZIP after the first half he should have said to himself, “Maybe I should put the back-up quarterback in to get some game time experience in case Colt McCoy ever gets hurt.”

Had he done THAT, that poor kid that got tossed in virtually untried in the NCS game would ahve had about half a season’s worth of experience behind him.

But no, it’s better to hang 70 points on your opponent (sportsmanship is over rated anyways) by letting your starting players annihilate the other team after it’s clear you are much better than they are than to just win the game and give some of your other players a chance to grow, mature, and get some real gametime experience.

Steele feels Alabama will not finish #1, because of the 6 games off the bye, the really hard SEC schedule, and considering the close games Alabama had last year, hard to imagine being as lucky in the close games as 2010. 4 road games will be brutal. The prospect of facing Florida once in the season, and again in the SEC Championship doesn’t help Alabama’s chances either. And only 2 guys return on the defense.

For Florida, their rushing game will not be as strong, defense lost 7 guys, their schedule is also realy, really tough, Georgia-Alabama-FSU all road games, only 5 return on defense, and then if they beat Alabama in the season, they could face Alabama again in the SEC Championship.

On Steele’s website, they point out that Charlie Strong and Tebow’s absence will be huge for Florida.

Kind of agree that Meyer & Saban are different in how they run to another team every few years, and don’t have loyalty to university, coaches, players, etc. Not sure why, maybe they like to be able to blame problems on former coaches recruits, or syphon off of former coaches recruits, or burnout or lose their passion? it’s bizarre. Maybe they just arn’t relational & loyal. Maybe they just value money above all else.

John Wooden was the best mentally tough coach. He didn’t scream or berate like Saban & Meyer, didn’t need to yell at players to earn their respect. He didn’t run around to new schools every 3 or 4 years. People person & dedicated to 1 school for a long time, UCLA. He sustained success, at a high level. Mark Richt reminds me of John Wooden in a lot of ways.

Dear Dback22,

Might I respectfully say that I can’t see a single similarity in John Wooden and Mark Richt? John Wooden actually WON National Championships. Mark Richt ain’t even been in the game.

Mark Richt is the highest paid Sunday School teacher in the world. That’s fine if he were hired to be a Sunday School teacher.

He wasn’t he was hired to be a FOOTBALL COACH. He has the most undisciplined teams in the Country and has found a way NOT to be in the Nat’l Championship game with a ton more of talent than those who have actually been there and WON the thing.

Arrests of UGA students on partying charges up sharplyShareThisPrint E-mail .By Kristi E. Swartz

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

It’s been two weeks since the University of Georgia was named the No. 1 party school in the nation by the Princeton Review. Apparently, authorities are paying attention.

.Twenty University of Georgia students were arrested for alcohol-related charges Thursday night in Athens, including underage possession of alcohol and DUI, according to Athens-Clarke County jail records.

Those arrests – by university and Athens-Clarke County police – bring the total of drug-and alcohol-related arrests made in the last two weeks to 43, according to The Red and Black, the campus newspaper.

According to The Red and Black, arrests of UGA students on drug-and-alcohol charges were already running ahead of recent years. The paper said prior to Thursday night’s crackdown, there had been 23 drug-and-alcohol-related arrests since Aug. 9. There were 15 arrests during the same two-week period a year ago. In 2008, 13 arrests were made during that time period, The Red and Black said.

UGA and Athens-Clarke County police departments also are conducting checkpoints Friday night, the campus newspaper said. Classes began this week at the school of 33,000 students.

Attempts by the AJC to contact Athens-Clarke County police spokespersons were unsuccessful Friday night.

The similarities I see between Mark Richt & John Wooden are endless like consistent excellence, winning, demeanor, not a screamer like a Saban or Meyer, don’t move around like gypsies Saban & Meyer to lots of schools, people persons, dedicated to one school for a long time, loyalty, etc.

The Gators and the TIde can’t be undefeated going into the SEC final, they play each other in October. I agree that the likely pairing for the SEC championship game is Alabama and Florida for the third straight year, but no team will enter that game undefeated.

The x factor in all of college football is that we are predicting the behavior and play of boys, not men. The look like grown men, but they are not. That’s why Coach Saban spends so much energy on mental toughness and focusing on the process. It seems to work with the teenagers.

And yes, his players are a little intimidated by him, just like I was by my Father. They want his respect. Coach RIcht reminds me of one of these new age dads that want’s to be his son’s best friend.

If Saban’s so tough, why does he jump schools the first time adversity hits. 13 schools in 36 years? He’s mentally one of the wimpiest coaches in the game. Yells a lot, but quits on his teams even more. Absolutely ZERO mental toughness for Nick Saban. It’s odd how quickly he gives up if things don’t go his way—succumbs to a 6 or 7 win season half a dozen times, or even worse, just quits on a team over a dozen times when things get tough.

When times get tough, Saban quits on his teams, over a dozen times.

I think the whole “Man, he’s a mentally tough coach because he screams a lot and waves his arms around” thing goes back to Bear Bryant. But, guys like Pete Carroll, Wooden, Phil Jackson, have proven that TRUE mental toughness isn’t a physical thing, otherwise it would be called physical toughness.

Lots of sports writers get caught up in the “bad boy” image Saban tries to put out there. Please, win a higher percentrage of games than Richt or finish in the top 10 4 or 5 times in a row like Richt if he’s so “bad”. Unitl Saban or Meyer does those 2 things, Richt’s the SEC Sherriff.

If you can’t back it up, the screamers are just making hot air.

Disco Panic

Why did Saban leave Miami after two brief (and lousy) seasons if he’s so mentally tough? He saw how average he was as a coach, he saw the team not responding to the screaming and yelling, and when adversity hit, he reverted back to what he’d already done 13 times before–quit. To give up on the Miami organization, players, and fans, that fast, tells you a lot about Saban’s mentality when it comes to adversity, of course, so do the other 13 teams he quit on. Quit, quit, quit, that’s Saban’s mantra when he faces adversity.

I thought “Man, we’re gonna see just how tough this guy is now, let’s see how he responds to that loss”.

He responded by on eof the biggest defeats and upsets in NCAA football history, losing the next week to…..Louisiana Monroe.

Again, to lose to Miss St. was a tough test. He should have had his team ready the next week. But they just wern’t tough enough to beat La Monroe.

Then Saban had to over-react, in his ‘bad boy’ style, to a loss by comparing it to what happened to the U.S on 9-11.

Saban has a LONG history of rubbing people the wrong way. I think Forbes found in a survey Saban was top 10 as the most hated person in all of sports. It’s just due to to the style, he berates, he yells, he screams, he throws his arms up in the air, people just don’t think much of the guy, and thankfully, as guys like Richt have proven, you can win a lot more games than Saban without resorting to any of those hated tactics.

Saban on a % basis is slightly higher rounding off at .772 but he has 3 SEC titles and 2 BCS titles in less time 8 years in the SEC. Comparing apples to apples and oranges to oranges by looking at both coach’s stints in the SEC Saban has clearly performed better with a slightly higher winning %, more sec titles(3-2), 2 bcs titles to zero for Richt, all in less time in the SEC than Richt.

Richt has a higher overall winning % than Saban because he had no coaching stints at dead end destinations like Toledo and Mich state which has all of 2 10 win seasons in its football history with one of them by Saban in 99. If you believe Richt would have a .77 winning % if he had also coached at Mich state and Toledo then you probably also believe in the tooth fairy and the easter bunny.

Saban’s trying desperately to change his image.

Statue.

ESPN shows.

Documentary.

Then he goes and calls people “pimps” last month.

Again, I’m sure it’s just Nick trying to put out that image, hoping it will get him more wins than guys like Coach Richt, but it won’t.

Watch Saban’s image take yet another hit as he calls sports agents “Pimps”:

Grant,

Just messing with ya dude. But I would hope that with all these posters above ranting and raving about saban that its just Patrick using all kinds of different handles. If not then we got about 10 dawg posters above who are all obsessed and consumed with Nick Saban.

As beast of the east said above why would so many dawg posters spend so much time obsessing over someone else’s coach? I mean really? What’s that all about?

Concentrate on having a good season and tell Patrick or all the multiple different posters if they really are a bunch of different people to quit obsessing over someone else’s coach. It just aint healthy.

Judd,

I’ll just put you down as yet another of Patrick’s various aliases since it looks like you are saying the same type stuff.

As for all the ESPN specials that’s something that ESPN wanted to do. Saban can’t just tell ESPN that he wants them to do a documentary on the Bama program. Did you really think Saban has that much power?

The statues? We have statues for all our various coaches who have won national titles at Bama. Bear and Gene Stallings each have one. What issue do you have with that?

Judd (Patrick alias),

As for calling sports agents pimps saban runs a disciplined program and wants no problems with crooked agents.

2 groups of people Saban doesn’t want his players having contact with. One is agents and the second is police. The police we’ve done a good job at lately. Its been over a year since an Alabama player has been arrested. Just curious but have you had any players arrested in the past year? If so how many?

I don’t think most people understand just how much Miami fans hated Saban for wimping out on them, and leaving their program in total shambles. He went on tv, several times, and gave his word that he was not going to be the coach at Alabama. Then we all know how that ended up, after just 2 years, he just got up, and quit on them. Not sure Miami folks see Saban as “mentally tough” as the way many sports writers do.

Want a laugh? Here’s a video clip where “mentally tough” Saban says he will not be the coach at Alabama, it’s an instant classic:

Some interesting comments about Mark Richt’s time at FSU – pity they are wrong. Pull out your UGA Football Media guide (UGA sends them to all the big contributors) and take a look at Richt’s bio. You’ll notice that he was in Greenville, NC coaching the ECU Pirates in 1989. Prior to that he was a graduate assistant (2 years) and volunteer assistant (2 years) at FSU. He must have been the greatest unpaid coach in history to be responsible for FSU’s winning records those years.
Richt truly must be a magician to have coached FSU to a 10-2 record in 1989 – not to mention being the greatest

I guess the Alabama fans didn’t read Tony’s article, and didn’t realize the aritcle was about Alabama and could Saban handle the expectations? In my opinion, based on how Saban’s handled adversity for the last 36 years, no, he will not do well this year, that’s as close to a guarantee as you can get.

FSU years? Before Richt (pre-1985) Bowden had 0 top 10 finishes, after Richt (2000), Bowden got 0 top 10 finishes, while Richt was at FSU, had like 12 or 13 top 10 finishes. Yeah, Bowden owes his success to Richt. Never did well before of after Richt was on his coaching staff.

Bowden had 0 top 10 finishes before Richt got there in 1985, and 0 after Richt left in 2000. Yes, Richt was the main reason, obviously, for FSU’s 12 or 13 top 5 finishes, except the 1 year.

While I have always been in support of Richt, and I don’t think he is on the hotseat, this is a crucial season. Winning the EASt is hugely important. It will establish momentum for the program and draw recruits. Why is alabama and uf on the majority of the top 100s’ lists, because they got the crystal. It is really that simple. Why in the heck else would anyone want to live in Tuscaloosa?

Winning the East is a step in the right direction. Another 8-5, and we will be talking about making Grantham the HC.

Saban has Ingram. they will be great. Throw Richardson on top of that. There is no doubt. You don’t have to be a great coach. Give the ball to one of those guys until the D starts cheating. Then throw it to Julio. It ain’t rocket science. How do you beat that running game? Keep their O off the field or play like spurrier used to… buns a blazing? I don’t know. All you Tide lovers and Gator lovers…Who Cares what you think. Meyer is an idiot and a liar and always has been. He takes credit for everyone elses hard work. Notice when Tebow left how many of his coaches also bailed out….they all hated Meyer because he’s a pompous jerk. He’s been lucky…very lucky…this season is going to prove that he’s not a good coach. As soon as the Gators start to lose he’ll start pointing fingers at everyone but himself..that’s his track record. Brantley IS NOT Tebow. He won’t be able to save Meyer’s butt in close games like Tebow used to…..Saban’s a good coach…but history will show you his teams have been unable to win consistantly from one season to the next….and let’s get real….I don’t care what anyone say’s…you can’t lose nine starters on defense and keep winning..not in the SEC…ain’t gonna happen. The Tide will be good ..just not as good as their fans want everyone to think they’ll be…….But you Gaytor and Tide fans keep patting yourself on the back and telling each other how good you are while the rest of the college football world laughs behind your back….a little humility goes a long way when it comes to wins and losses.

You gotta like AJ Green over Julio, Gators got nobody at WR that matches AJ. You gotta like our punter and kicker over Bama’s & Gator’s. You gotta like Charles and White over Bama’s & Gator’s. You gotta like Grantham’s experience over Smart’s or the Gator guy (can’t remember, they get a new one ever month).

Speedy gone,

Where is georgia’s recruiting class ranked right now? 6th? Have they ever finished #1? Nope! Good luck catching Texas which already has 7 5 star players committed.

Hurry up O,

If Georgia is so good why did they only finish 8-5 last year? How come they’re only ranked 23rd in the country while Bama is no. 1 and Florida #4?

Good luck with that freshman qb. Moron!

Good thing that you got Grantham who was your 5th choice behind Kirby Smart, Bud Foster at VT, John Chavis at LSU, Will Muschamp at Texas and 1 other guy. Where did Grantham’s defenses finish in his only 2 years as a coordinator in the NFL? 30TH out of 32 teams both times? Good luck with that! You guys are too funny.

Georgia’s running back tandem is better than Bama’s? Is that why Mark Ingram won a Heisman instead of Ealey? Is that why the 2 bama backs are both 1st and 2nd team preseason all sec? Does anyone outside of Georgia even know who Ealey is? Does anyone outside of Georgia know who Caleb King is? Wayyyyyyyyyyyy to funny! Richt’s always a top recruiter, 2001-2009, varied from #3 class to #9. I think the 2011 will have the highest ranking on rivals and scout of any class Richt’s recruited yet. Starting out strong, with 16 commits already, Lemay alone is bringing in some big guns, if Crowell and Rome pick Georgia, and most have them picking Georgia right now, Richt could end up #1 with best QB, best TE, best RB, etc.

If Georgia goes 14-0, which basically means beat the teams you normally beat, and whoop Florida, then all the recruits on the fence will get on the Georgia bandwagon and it will absolutely be the #1 recruiting class in the country, without a doubt.

South Carolina has the defense to win the SEC east this year. They were 3rd in total defense in the SEC last year behind guess who, Alabama and Florida. Spurrier has the experienced QB and tons of skill players with receivers galore and running backs to put points on the board like he did at Florida. Only question mark is can the Offensive line give Garcia the protection so he can deliver the ball to those big 6′5″ receivers and open some holes for freshman RB Lattimore who is a top 5 recruit nationally. If Spurrier gets his offense going then the SEC will have a new kid at the top of the heap. Don’t be surprised if South Carolina is not playing for the SEC title in the Dome this year.

South carolina will be mediocre again. Garcia’s not that good and spurrier will yank him early for the freshman QB. Ga will beat usc like a rented mule—Richt will really run up the score to get more votes in the polls. Ga 41 USC 20! It’s a wrap.

Saban will be looking for another nfl job soon. He’s only making $4-$5 mil at bama and he can make a lot more than that in the league. Plus, he’s tired of recruiting a bunch of 18 year old prima donnas and wants to get back to just coaching. He may last 1 more year—then off to the nfl, again.

Usually, after a bad season, Richt rebounds big time, ok, he rebounds big time, every time. I remember back in 2002, everybody wrote the Dogs off, and Richt went 13-1, won the SEC, and should have been invited to the National Championship. Same thing happened in 2007, finished ranked #2, until ESPN lobbied against Georgia, was headed to the National Championship, and was dropped to #4. Richt’s knocked on the door twice at Georgia, time to go on in.

Come on guys, I like Richt as much as a straight man can, but the guy is not all that. Some of you act like there is a halo around his head, but yet he has more discipline problems than any other SEC coach. He’s a better coach than Saban? And how many NCs does Richt have on his resume as a head coach? He might be a better man than Saban (which will pay off in the long run), but he doesn’t have Saban’s killer instinct on the gridiron. Granted, Coach Saban’s year following the NC at LSU was somewhat disappointing, but he has stated that they lost focus and he has corrected that in his approach to the year following a title run. We’ll soon see if he has effectively accomplished that or not. And whoever throwed up the reason about giving away all those TDs in a scrimmage must not realize what a scrimmage is! They might line up on the 1 yrd line and scrimmage goal line formations for 8 plays. If the offense scores 5 out of 8 times, those figures are released to the media in the scrimmage stats and all of you make hay about it. Does that necessarily mean that the defense is weak? Come on guys! By the way, can I remind all of the Bama haters that at the beginning of last season, all fans of other teams in the SEC were reminding the Bama nation that Saban had never posted back to back 10 win seasons. We all know how that turned out. So this year is no different. All you Bama haters are looking for something to ease the pain of knowing that BAMA IS BACK and there is no stopping the freight train rolling out of Tuscaloosa on Sept 4…see ya in Tempe Baby!!! ROLL TIDE!!!

Mickey,

It doesn’t really matter if Nick Saban isn’t the best coach in the league. He’s coaching at the University of Alabama – even Bill Curry and Dennis Franchione could win there. Heck, Mike Shula won ten in a row in ‘05. If he hadn’t lost some key players to serious injuries, he might well have played for a NC. It’s not that hard to win at Bama.
