Countdown to No. 1: Will No. 7 Nebraska get its revenge on Texas?

We continue our Countdown to No. 1 today with teams 6 through 10. I know some people will disagree on Nebraska at No. 7 but I think this will be a breakout year for the Cornhuskers under Bo Pelini.

I have Oregon at No. 8 and have noticed that some folks don’t have them in the Top Ten or ranked at all. Yeah, the Ducks lost QB Jeremiah Masoli but they have 18 starters coming back from a Rose Bowl team. And Chip Kelly is a really good coach.

So tell me what you think. We’ll have to Top Five on Friday to close out the week.

10. Iowa

**–It will be a good season if: The Hawkeyes can replace four starters on the offensive line and running back Jewel Hampton returns to form after sitting out last season with a knee injury. The schedule is set up with Penn State, Wisconsin, and Ohio State at home.

**–It will be a disappointing season if: Quarterback Ricky Stanzi can’t cut down on his interceptions after throwing 15 last season. Stanzi is a gamer and comes up big in big situations. But he also tries to force the ball into coverage.

9. Oklahoma

**–It will be a good season if: The Sooners win the Big 12 South.  The Sooners can do it if  quarterback Landry Jones picks up where he left off when he subbed for the injured Sam Bradford last season. Oklahoma must replace four first-round draft choices but the Sooners believe this will be one of their better defenses.

**–It will be a disappointing season if: Oklahoma focuses so much on the Oct. 2 game with Texas that it forgets that Florida State is coming to Norman on Sept. 11. In fact, the Sooners have three potentially tough non-conference games with FSU, Air Force and Cincinnati.

8. Oregon

**–It will  be a good season if: The Ducks win the Pac-10 again and go back to the Rose Bowl, despite the loss of quarterback Jeremiah Masoli. There have been some other offseason problems, including one with running back LaMichael James, who will be suspended for the firt game.  This is still a very good football team.

**–It will be a disappointing season if: Nate Costa doesn’t come through as the new quarterback. So much of what Chip Kelly does is based on the quarterback and his mobility.  Last season Costa subbed for an injured Masoli and completed 20 of 33 passes in a win over UCLA. But he has also had two season-ending knee injuries in his career.

7. Nebraska

**–It will be good season if: The Cornhuskers get revenge for last season’s controversial finish in the Big 12 championship game by beating Texas on Oct. 16 in Lincoln.  Nebraska could get another shot at Texas in the Big 12 championship game on Dec. 4. Beating Texas twice in one season and winning a championship would be a sweet way for Nebraska to say goodbye to the Big 12. Nebraska joins the Big Ten in 2011.

**–It will be a disappointing season if: Nebraska doesn’t win the Big 12 North. The Huskers are strong, even without the great DT Ndamukong Suh. And the Big 12 North is pretty weak.

6. TCU

**–It will be a good season if: The Horned Frogs beat Oregon State in the opener run through the Mountain West again and go to a BCS Bowl for the second straight season. Despite the loss of All-America DE Jerry Hughes, this looks like Gary Patterson’s best team since he’s been in Fort Worth.

**–It will be a disappointing season if: If quarterback Andy Dalton, the MWC offensive player of the year in 2009, struggles or gets hurt. Anything less than BCS bowl will be a disappointment for Horned Frogs.

So I guess when you beat a team in your conference that wins your conference, you are really the conference champion according to the brilliant fred!!

Sam,

You know exactly what he means. UGA had a very down year and beat the ACC champ.

So basically its impossible to win a conference or MNC unless you go undefeated? Afterall, if you lose a game then the team you lost to is the real champion right? You guys crack me up.

Low country. No I don’t know what he means. That is the dumbest thing to say. Hey we beat one team we are the champs of that conference. You can go back and find this happening several times each year in every conference.
What happened in 2008? You were by far the better team. Does that make gt the second best team in the sec east? Stupid.
The truth is you should beat gt 80% of the time. You get the better recruits. Why is that such a shocker?

That leaves:

1. Alabama
2. Ohio State
3. Florida
4. Texas
5. Boise State

Tough to argue with these choices! To keep the scoreboard…So far you have made the mistake of having UGA too high. GT ranked too high (UGA should not be ranked unless around 24/25 – they will lose 4 or more; GT is too high…they will lose 3 or more) but your worst blunders are yet to come. No way Bama finishes top 5 this year. They are good. They are deep. But they still must replace too much defensively and playing 6 SEC teams that have the BYE week to prepare is simply asking too much! Bama loses in the West shocking seemingly everyone who failed to rationally approach the ranking process. Number 1 & 2 teams will not come from SEC this year. Indeed the SEC may be the 4th or 5th toughest conference this year. Just too much talent lost from last season. Lots of talent but it is mostly inexperienced.

fred, by your logic west virginia won the sec championship a few years back then, correct? just trying to make sure i understand things…

also i echo johns comment above. right now if you dumped a team like TCU into the sec they probably wouldnt fare to well over the season because they dont have the depth etc. they are significantly better than most smaller schools however, and can (sometimes) play with the best of them on any given saturday for one or two games a year. if they were to join a major conference, they’d be able to recruit better players, and possibly be able to contend. utah will be a decent example of this over the next few years. i wouldnt be surprised to see them contending for the pac-10/12 within 5 years or so.

On a neutral field, UGA or GT would hold their own against any one of these teams.

Rankings should not be allowed until the 1st week of October.

It does make for good discussion and good blog topics but that is about it.

I don’t know about all that Sammy, but compared to YOU I certainly am. I’m typing this slowly so you can keep up. Who ever wins the LAST game is usually considered the Champion. Do you get that concept Sammy or did I use words that are too big for you? For instance, Alabama and Florida play each other this year in the regular season. One team will win. HYPOTHETICALLY, they will play each other in the Conference Championship game. THAT game is the one that counts for the conference championship, NOT the first one they play.

In actuality I was playing with the troll, Ugay, when I made my initial statement but apparently snagged a dumbass along the way (you). The comment was a taunt, a sarcastic retort. I realize now that such expressions are beyond your limited reason skills and I apologize for you having had to tax your tiny little mind so much replying to my sarcasm. As sarcasm is generally considered the LOWEST form of humor I assumed that anyone could seeing. i see that in you I assumed to much. I have to remember to never underestimate the blatant stupidity of some people and I thank you for bring home that lesson. Just when i think I have delved as deeply as possible into the pool of dumb asses, someone like you will come along and show me that I merely reached a shelf and there is still further to go to get to the bottom.

Trouble yourself no more on the matter. Feel free to get back to watching the Jerry Springer show. I think your family is on next……..

Dawgbyte, I agree on everything except your UGA assesment. They may start off shaky, but I would be surprised if they lose more than 3, which would have them finishing in the top 25.

I agree LowCountryDawg07, but they keep cookin’ the books as it were in the bowl games. Last year for instance: They had TCU AND Boise ranked high come bowl season in 2009. Rather than expose the charade, or forever put to rest the thought neither team belongs, they had them play each other. Nothing was proved or disproved………

Black Coffee & Bourbon

Boise is a joke. They play a couple of good teams and then beat on the WAC for the rest of the season. If they get a shot at the BCS title it will be an absolute travesty.

Also, TCU at number 6 is also a laugher. A playoff would solve a lot of these problems but that will never happen.

Fred
I am so grateful for the heartfelt long message. As expected, when you are proven an idiot, you resort to personal attacks. It’s okay fred. I know you really are that intelligent when it comes to college football. Beating one team makes that team the conference champion according to fred. So now we must completely change who won what conference. And now it matters when you play the team. So if a team doesn’t play a team they lost to again, but said team goes on to win a conf champ, then the team they lost to is the champ! Just like what I wrote above! This is the way twisted fred sees things. What a warped mind this cretin has. I can’t wait to see who wins what conference this year. It is all so complicated with fred’s way!

LowCountryDawg07

Black Coffee & Bourbon,

I agree seems they are a decent team with all respect. But, just as USC and these other weak conferences, anyone can show up for one big game. The true test is the teams that play tough opponets week end to week out and sustain though injuries and the wear and tear of a tough conference schedule. USC or Boise might play one big ESPN gameday hyped up match and get beat up but, have all season to recover with easy teams. However, imagine them having to travel after a big game to the swap or death valley right after that to play.

Wilder Jr. will never play a game as running back in college. He is a natural defensive end. He has too much size and will only get bigger. FSU will have him on defense.

2008 was johnsons first year. uga had two weeks to prepare and still lost.

honestly i think tech’s problem in bowl games isnt so much teams ‘figureing it out’, though im sure the extra teim helps opposing defenses. the offense relies a lot on timing and im sure the layoff makes the O a little rusty. that and the fact that iowa’s o line pretty much dominated us up front last year. but they did that against almost everyone they played. i think tech will be fine on offense again this year.
