Countdown to No. 1: Will No. 7 Nebraska get its revenge on Texas?

We continue our Countdown to No. 1 today with teams 6 through 10. I know some people will disagree on Nebraska at No. 7 but I think this will be a breakout year for the Cornhuskers under Bo Pelini.

I have Oregon at No. 8 and have noticed that some folks don’t have them in the Top Ten or ranked at all. Yeah, the Ducks lost QB Jeremiah Masoli but they have 18 starters coming back from a Rose Bowl team. And Chip Kelly is a really good coach.

So tell me what you think. We’ll have to Top Five on Friday to close out the week.

10. Iowa

**–It will be a good season if: The Hawkeyes can replace four starters on the offensive line and running back Jewel Hampton returns to form after sitting out last season with a knee injury. The schedule is set up with Penn State, Wisconsin, and Ohio State at home.

**–It will be a disappointing season if: Quarterback Ricky Stanzi can’t cut down on his interceptions after throwing 15 last season. Stanzi is a gamer and comes up big in big situations. But he also tries to force the ball into coverage.

9. Oklahoma

**–It will be a good season if: The Sooners win the Big 12 South.  The Sooners can do it if  quarterback Landry Jones picks up where he left off when he subbed for the injured Sam Bradford last season. Oklahoma must replace four first-round draft choices but the Sooners believe this will be one of their better defenses.

**–It will be a disappointing season if: Oklahoma focuses so much on the Oct. 2 game with Texas that it forgets that Florida State is coming to Norman on Sept. 11. In fact, the Sooners have three potentially tough non-conference games with FSU, Air Force and Cincinnati.

8. Oregon

**–It will  be a good season if: The Ducks win the Pac-10 again and go back to the Rose Bowl, despite the loss of quarterback Jeremiah Masoli. There have been some other offseason problems, including one with running back LaMichael James, who will be suspended for the firt game.  This is still a very good football team.

**–It will be a disappointing season if: Nate Costa doesn’t come through as the new quarterback. So much of what Chip Kelly does is based on the quarterback and his mobility.  Last season Costa subbed for an injured Masoli and completed 20 of 33 passes in a win over UCLA. But he has also had two season-ending knee injuries in his career.

7. Nebraska

**–It will be good season if: The Cornhuskers get revenge for last season’s controversial finish in the Big 12 championship game by beating Texas on Oct. 16 in Lincoln.  Nebraska could get another shot at Texas in the Big 12 championship game on Dec. 4. Beating Texas twice in one season and winning a championship would be a sweet way for Nebraska to say goodbye to the Big 12. Nebraska joins the Big Ten in 2011.

**–It will be a disappointing season if: Nebraska doesn’t win the Big 12 North. The Huskers are strong, even without the great DT Ndamukong Suh. And the Big 12 North is pretty weak.

6. TCU

**–It will be a good season if: The Horned Frogs beat Oregon State in the opener run through the Mountain West again and go to a BCS Bowl for the second straight season. Despite the loss of All-America DE Jerry Hughes, this looks like Gary Patterson’s best team since he’s been in Fort Worth.

**–It will be a disappointing season if: If quarterback Andy Dalton, the MWC offensive player of the year in 2009, struggles or gets hurt. Anything less than BCS bowl will be a disappointment for Horned Frogs.

Saban is a great coach but he loses his entire defense and has a brutal schedule this year. Plus there’s that whole “target on the back” thing that comes with being defending national champ and preseason #1. If Bama wins another title this year I’ll wear a Georgia Tech shirt. It simply isn’t happening people.

I like to read what rational people write. Phil Steele is one of more rational pre-season guys. Most accurate. His website says Georgia will rise, Florida will be down, for many years. Gives a lot of reason why this is so. It’s very hard to come to a different conclusion.

dawgfan, be careful, Bama returns the play makers on an offense that controls the clock and does not turn it over (keeps it easy on the defense). hightower will be back from injury to lead the defense. The defense also has plenty of guys that have of playing not but not many starts. It would not surprise me in the least to see Bama win the SEC and another title.

Bama’s schedule is not easy but they have an off week and play a team in their 1st season in football ever before 2 of their 3 hardest games. Bama also has San Jose St. before Penn St. Besides when does Bama not have a target on their back?

Randy,

Interesting…pick and choose much? Why no mention of the AP poll in your stats? Which one “counts”?

2009 was an interesting finish in the polls too. Didn’t see Georgia anywhere on there. Actually, wait, they’re in the also receiving votes section.

Are you predicting a jump from unranked to #1 all because of Phil Steele? Didn’t see where he mentioned that Florida and Bama would be down for years to come.

Thanks for the laughs this morning. You almost sound like you’ve done your homework with all these ‘numbers’ you throw out. Keep twisting things to try and make your point. At best, your ‘facts’ that point to Georgia supremacy are the equivalent of being the valedictorian…….

You Saban bashers keep getting proved wrong year after year.Saban was’nt even coming to Alabama and ya’ll have continually been proven wrong since then. If you can’t see what Saban has built at Alabama you need to stop watching college football cause you don’t know what you are talking about.

Randy,

Let’s play another game and take schools out of it. For the last 5 years which program of the 3 below would you take as a fan?

A) Final AP Rankings – 8, NR, NR, 6, 1
Final Coaches Rankings – 8, NR, NR, 6, 1

B) Final AP Rankings – 10, 23, 2, 13, NR
Final Coaches Rankings – 10, NR, 3, 10, NR

C) Final AP Rankings – 12, 1, 13, 1, 3
Final Coaches Rankings – 16, 1, 16, 1, 3

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say honest people wouldn’t take one of those if given a choice of the three. Of course, that’s just me.

Fred

I don’t understand this trend over the last 10 years or so of ranking weak assed teams like TCU high in polls. Earlier in the decade it was put to rest when TCU had Oklahoma on their schedule. It’s kinda tough even for idiot journalists to rank a team in the top ten that just lost by 70 points……….. TCU solved that little probelm by refusing to play Oklahoma any more. Now they only have to go through their weak little conference and play some mid pack team from the weak Pac10 and they have it made.

The one with the potential to benefit from these false rankings right now is Oregon State. If they beat over ranked TCU and over ranked Boise State, they will end up at LEAST number 3 in the country by September 28th (assuming Boise State beats VTech, another perennial over ranked team). It’s just stupid.

OU is my second favorite team. I grew up on OU football. I had a cousin who started for them in the early ’70’s and won 2 Nat’l Championships. I say that only to preface my next remark. OU doesn’t belong in the top 10. My two favorite teams, UGA and OU have the same kind of coach: They will get you 10 wins most season with an occasional drop to 8, mostly through the awesome talent they attract, but they can’t get over the “hump” and get you a Nat’l Championship. Stoops took another coach’s team to a Championship his first year as head coach due to some awesome assistants, but they let and so did his chances at another Nat’l Championship.

I’m not sure I find any of the teams listed to be top ten caliber. Nebraska? pul-leassssssse.

Hey H Back,

You must be on crack based upon your dumb statements about Al & FL and then trying to throw GA in the same mix. GA is a lack luster program that has done nothing in 30 years. They have had many set backs and now seem to be on track with their new AD, but they are far from being a top 10 program.

Gators will win the East with ease in 2010 and GA wil be lucky to win 6 games this year! AL wins the West!

Gee, Ugay is back with his mindless drivel. I’ll play once though…………….. UGA played in the Independence Bowl against Texas A&M and WON 44-20, winning the ACC Championship

What bowl game did Ga Tech WIN last year? Oh that would be NONE.

George Stein

August 19th, 2010
9:46 am

Just to make sure folks are getting it right – when you allude to bowl games, you can’t say the #3 team in Conference X beat the #2 team in Conference Y, therefore Conference X is better/deeper. The bowls do not pick based of record or performance (usually). They pick based on who they think will put the most people in seats. It’s the reason South Carolina always gets a good bowl game if they are halfway decent.

Everyone here has to admit that the best thing about this stupid ranking system used to determine a “National Champion” is all the crap talk we get to do because of it…………….

Take for instance TCU: in the current USA Today Poll they are ranked Number 7. Can anyone here tell me with a straight face that TCU in a 12 game season could beat all 12 teams ranked below them, teams 8-19. Say they played them in order TCU would beat:

Oklahoma
Nebraska
Iowa
Oregon
Wisconsin
Miami (FL)
Penn State
Pittsburgh
LSU
Ga Tech
N. Carolina
Arkansas

I don’t see it. The “rankings” are complete, utter night soil from an over fed bull.

That is the dumbest logic I have seen. No team ever could beat the 10 teams ranked below them if they played them. What you sec homers forget is the smaller schools don’t get the 4 and 5 star players that you get. So when you say if they played in our conf blah blah. If they played in your conf, they would get better recruits.

yellowjack,

The analysis and his predictions are two completely different things. The analysis focuses on the program, coaches, players, etc. for every FBS team. Everyone knows in-depth about his/her own team and maybe a handful of others but if you’re interested in knowing about out-of-conference opponents or random teams, the Phil Steele mag is pretty good.
