Countdown to No. 1: Can No. 14 Georgia Tech win another ACC title?

We continue our countdown to our preseason Top 25, which will conclude on Friday with No. 1 through No. 5.

Today we have 11-15 and you’ll find three ACC Coastal teams: North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech. Now the round robin with those three and No. 20 Miami is going to be fun. Some smart people are telling me I have Miami rated too low. We’ll see.

Again, let me know what you think. We will have teams 6-10 on Thursday.

15. Florida State

**–It will be a good season if:  The defense improves just a little bit. Florida State struggled last season and Mark Stoops, brother of Bob, comes in as defensive coordinator. But we wonder if the Seminoles have the horses to be really good. If so, FSU can get to the ACC championship game.

**–It will be a disappointing season if: QB Christian Ponder does not bounce back to his 2009 form. The senior was averaging 321.8 yards of total offense  per game when he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in the ninth game against Clemson. He completed 68 percent of his passes last season and is playing behind a great offensive line.

14. Georgia Tech

**–It will be a good season if: Quarterback Joshua Nesbitt stays healthy. Nesbitt is the straw who stirs the cocktail that is Paul Johnson’s high-octane offense. Nesbitt has an adequate backup in Tevin Washington but Nesbitt can’t miss long stretches of play.

**–It will be a disappointing season if: The defense does not improve. It should as Al Groh, one of the best defensive minds in the game, takes over. The Yellow Jackets also have to replace four NFL draft choices (two on offense, two on defense) who were difference makers.

13. Virginia Tech

**–It will be a good season if: Bud Foster is able to rebuild his defense. Nobody is worried about the offense as running backs Darren Evans (2008 ACC freshman of the year) and Ryan Williams (2009 ACC freshman of the year) return along with senior quarterback Tyrod Taylor.

**–It will be disappointing season if: The Hokies fall in the opener against Boise State. Last season Virginia Tech lost its first game to Alabama in Atlanta. That game exposed some weaknesses that teams like Georgia Tech were able to exploit. Beat Boise and Virginia Tech could be in the BCS title discussion in November.

12. Wisconsin

**–It will be a good season if: Running back John Clay can pick up where he left off last season. Clay finished the season with six consecutive games over 100 yards and finished as the Big Ten’s leading rusher with 1,517 yards.

**–It will be a disappointing season if: The Badgers lose back to back games with Ohio State (Oct. 16 in Madison) and Iowa (Nov. 23 at Iowa City). Wisconsin will be favored in every other game it plays and a split in those two games probably puts the Badgers in a BCS game.

11. North Carolina

**–It will be a good season if: Senior quarterback T.J. Yates rediscovers his 2007 form when he threw for over 2,600 yards. The defense is so good that if the Tar Heels get consistent play at quarterback, they can win the very tough ACC Coastal.

**–It will be a disappointing season if: Marvin Austin’s contact with agents keeps him out of action for an extended period of time. This North Carolina team is built around a defense that has at least six NFL Draft choices. It can’t afford to lose Austin and it can’t afford for this to be a major distraction.

Tony,….C’mon man. UNC to win the Coastal?,…..Have you watched their offense the past couple of seasons? It’s as wretched as their D is wicked. No way. Also,….you sure have seemed to tick off the nadlickers with these selections. Funny stuff reading their comments,….seems you’ve missed it,…they’re going to win the MNC (in their own minds) again.

Tony, Tony, Tony, you disappoint me.
I agree with SatchelBuzz. I was bored on Sunday and watched the 2009 UNC @ GT game. UNC’s offense is crap. GT’s mediocre D kept them in check. The UNC defense was obliterated by GT’s O. I see no reason why UNC would improve on last year’s record. They won’t be able to outscore the Hokies, Miami or GT’s offenses (with or without Austin).

With 15 out of 25 teams picked by MrSoFB, there are only 3 teams from outside the South picked.

GT at #14 is too high – they should have been picked yesterday, but for MrSoFB to have as many teams from the South in his top 25 he had to push some teams up a few places.

GT is THE ONLY football program on the rise in the great state of Georgia. JB you are a typical Dawg fan who can not even say your team has become second tier in the SEC. CPJ is 1-1 against the Dawgs and has not even coached with players recruited for the triple option system. If UGA keeps CMR in five years GT will beat them 75% of the time. GT gas handled UNC, VT, Clemson fine the last two years. VT has atrocious calls to win the game in 2008. Reality is GT was a dropped pass from winning a game that defined UGA’s season last year. We do know that GT can run the ball on anyone and has a quality QB. UGA has not proven they can run the ball against defenses that crowd the line of scrimmage, and you midget QB will not be able to see over the line to throw the ball. You know that GT is here to stay and that scares all Dawg fans. If you really think teams can figure out the GT option take at look at CPJ’s 5 year records at Georgia Southern and Navy. It does not appear that the “high school” offense ever got figured out. GT and UGA are basically even the last two year and now GT has some actual players recruited for the system they run. Chew on that one a while.

Every year Virginia Tech is expected to do well and they have earned that respect. I think with Paul Johnson as coach Tech has earned that respect as well. Georgia Tech will beat some people they are not supposed to and probably will not lose to anyone they shouldn’t lost to. Every blessed year is FSU’s year to turn it around. I’ll believe it when they live up to the hype. Same with UNC, who journalist have had a love affair with ever since Butch Davis became coach. I’m surprised the Miami hype isn’t bigger this year but I suspect once they win a couple of games they will be everyones darling to win it all. Fact is, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech are the only ACC teams to meet or suprass expectations the last couple of years. Everyone else has dissapointed.

The Spur once referred to UNC as the “sleeping giant”. I think you’re on to something, Tony. Yates is key, but he’s on a short leash. What? I’ll type this slow so you can read it easily, yes you guys have an admirable record in the last 10-12 years, just not the type of success that teams who compete for nc’s admire. If you guys are happy with slightly better than average in a conference where the nc is the target, then enjoy. UF, LSU Alabama, USC, Ohio State Texas, what do all of these teams have in common? They have all one nc’s in the last 10 years, and they would not be happy with the records at UGA. Just the reality, deal with it.

Even though Richt brough in a Saban quality defensive staff, and has an offense full of 10 stars that’s on everybody’s watch list, and the best special teams unit in the country, and the most consistent winner in football as the head coach, Tony STILL predicts doom and gloom for Georgia.

Saban tried to hire Gratham to run his defense, twice, at both Mich St & Miami, Belin’s LB’s are consistently all-conference, Lakotas’ DB’s are top 10 in nation consistently.

If Richt hired Nick Saban to run his defense, and had the #1 ranked QB running the offense, certain writers would rank Georgia out of the top 10. Some guys just don’t prefer Mark Richt’s teams, for whatever irrational reasons. Boy will they look dumb after the 2010 & 2011 seasons.

Reality Check, if not for one single player – Josh Nesbitt – who was Chan Gailey’s recruit – you nerds might not actually have a single meaningful win in PJ’s stint at Tech thus far. Nesbitt would have been a bust for Gailey but for PJ he has been a blessing of ultimate proportions. PJ hasn’t recruited anyone with JN’s ability to run the t.o. and if this Lee kid doesn’t commit you might not ever get one. PJ should start cutting JN check as soon as this season ends because without him you might already be on another coaching search.

Nothing new guys. Critics bashed Richt in 2001 & 2006 and predicted disaster in 2002 & 2007. Richt finished ranked in the top 3 in the final polls in both 2002 & 2007. Richt always follows a bad season with a top 3 season and National Championship run. It’s as sure as the sun rising. But the critics just repeat what other polls say, not using richt’s track record of 2002 & 2007, very similar season to 2010, to guide their thinking.

who mentioned anything about a NC and UGA? Not me. But, since we are on the topic, that is a pretty short list. Only 1 team can win the NC every year so the other 100+ programs in the country should be dissapointed. I think UGA has come A LOT closer than the Nerds the last decade of finishing on top in the polls. BTW, did you learn your grammar with Dawghater? It is “won” not “one”!!

Dawghater, how can you say that? UGA has averaged ten wins in the last 10 years, several SEC titles and several BCS bowl victories. They have a fine, middle of the road, above average program that should be the envy of most college programs based on results. Believe me, there is nothing to envy about the way they conduct their business otherwise, but they produce just fine on the field. No nc’s, but alot of wins. I’m the biggest Tech fan there is, but the facts are the facts. I personally would not be satisfied with UGA’s success due to the lack of nc’s, but the dawg fans on here seem to be happy. Accept mediocrity and you get mediocrity.

I’m a UGA guy and think Tech has a shot at another but it’s going to be a much tougher road this year. The ACC is going to be much improved (UNC, FSU, MIami, Va Tech, NC State sort of) and the guys they lost to the NFL are going to have a bigger impact than I think most Tech fans want to believe. I’ve certainly seen it happen at UGA after a couple big time guys leave. You just can’t replace that kind of talent.

Richt has an amazing 100% turnaround track record (see 2001/2002 & 2006/2007, even going back to FSU year, in 24 years of coaching, Richt’s teams have never finished out of the final top 10 rankings 2 years in a row since 1986.)

Grantham, the new Georgia DC, is great at instant turnarounds too. Grantham helped the Colts go form 3-13 to 13-3 in his 1st season there. Helped the Browns go from 4-10 to 10-6 in his 1st season there. Look for Georgia to have a monster turnaround with 2 turnaround experts Richt & Grantham leading the way.

I love to hate on the ACC, but I think they are going to be tough this year. Miami perked up last year and FSU has a lot of talent, that’s why Bobby wanted THIS year to be his last. I see no reason that Tech should do much worse (if any worse) than last year. As to them being higher ranked than the Dawgs? I’m hopeful, but skeptical of the Dawgs and CMR. He’s managed to lose the SEC with better teams than the one he has this year.

VT? yeah, right. It seems that every year the sports writers just pee all over themselves to rank them high. they excuse every loss to crappy teams and talk about their “talent.” They would play Jr. High schools for their non conference games if the NCAA would let them. ANy time they can string 3 wins together they are back in the top ten.

NC: As a couple of others have already said: I’ll have to see it to believe it. They seem pretty adept at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. If they are tough this year, then good, it will make the ACC better. I can’t wait to see the in-State rivalry games between the ACC and the SEC. Despite all the talk, those are the games that tell the tale.

Has the Big Ten improved that much or has all college football and the parity backed down to Big Ten level? Tony is smart going with good coaching. North Carolina has a winner as does Va. Tech, maybe FSU and Ga. Tech. Miami has talent, will they know how to use it? The temptation with talent is to nuke the other team instead of getting in the mud with them and physically beating them. Miami have not proven , yet, to have that grinding personality good teams like Alabama have. Georgia loses games the same way throwing away opportunities trying to get talented players in an offense instead of just taking what is given. They woke up against Tech last year, eating the clock up and wearing down the defense, keeping the ball away from Tech’s offense. The press gives them hell about not using Green, but less is best and when Green is open he will be way open. Miami has a talented quarterback, the temptation will be to over use him. An opponent game plans with this in mind. A good coach can take an average running game and do well when the defense is giving up the run. Game time adjustments make a college coach, Johnson is one of the best, Miami does not have that or did not last year.

They don’t like loyal, ethical guys like Coach Richt, who win more games than bad boys like Saban and are more consistently great, like the 4 top 10 finishes in a row, which Meyer or Saban have never done.

UGA fans, ‘02 and ‘07 UGA had 2nd yr starters at QB. Murray will be in year 1 with a major change on defense. UGA’s greatest hope for a trip to the SECCG comes from the SEC being down enough that S. Media likes bad boys like Saban. They don’t prefer to give the 3rd most winningest coach in football a top 10 ranking. Or even an invitation to a well earned National Championship game.

But, after Richt blows out every team by 20 points in 2010, the media will have no choice but to recognize Mark Richt. And by Nov.1, 2010, the football media will be focused on Mark Richt, as he vaults into the #1 National ranking, and continues to dominate every tea by 20 points or more.

Saban’s a 1 hit wonder, he throws 9 out of 10 years, to win 1 game, once a decade. That’s great? Give me a break. Saban’s win % is .700, Richt’s blows him away at .769.

Now that we have some people on here who want to talk sports here is a Dawg fans view of Tech. CPJ is a hell of a coach. I love the option and I hate that they run it so well. The question for Tech, in my humble opinion, is how successful will Groh be recruiting defensive players? The offense is easy because you can get the best of the undersized linemen and the best of the non-throwing quarterbacks. You really only need one big play receiver. But on the defensive side you are competing with bigger schools for the exact same kids. I think that will answer the question about Tech and their national championship hopes.

Burdell

All this talk about about UGA’s worst team in however many years…

My question is this…aren’t most of those players still on the team? And now you have a QB that has never taken a college snap? What evidence is there that this year’s team will be any different than last.

Not hatin’…just curious. You may have improved a few coaches but that is still unproven as well.

LowCountryDawg07

Alabama didn’t dismantle their teams and they won a national championship so there is no validity to that statement. Secondly, if UF had not snuck away with the worst call in the SEC at ARk game, might not be talking nc.

Alabam’s offense will struggle this year. Teams will load 8, even 9 in the box, and take away the run. Then Saban’s ineptness as an offensive coach will be exposed. Surprised more teams didn’t force Alabama to beat them with the pass last season. Saban HATES to throw more than 20 times a game. I’d say, force him to throw 40 times a game to beat you. Double down on Julio.

Back River Reality

Reality Check, seriously, take a step back and look at things objectively for a minute would you?

You comment: “If you really think teams can figure out the GT option take at look at CPJ’s 5 year records at Georgia Southern and Navy. It does not appear that the “high school” offense ever got figured out.”

All due respect to the Eagles and the Midshipmen, but you must consider the talent level of the defenses CPJ’s option attack faced on a week to week basis while coaching at those institutions. Truthfully, they simply do not stack up to the defenses Tech faces when playing SEC, Big 10, or even ACC opponents.

To truly evaluate the worth of CPJ’s offense you don’t need to look at his five years at Statesboro and Annapolis. Save yourself some time and simply evaluate what Iowa did to Tech’s ‘powerhouse offense’ during their bowl match-up last season. Seems to me the Hawkeye’s got CPJ’s offense figured out quite nicely with only two weeks preparation. As long as Willie Martinez isn’t your DC the CPJ offense just isn’t that difficult to…..dare I say, squash like a bug!

George Stein

August 18th, 2010
10:27 am

Dawglasville – you just hit the nail on the head. I think the reason for Johnson’s success is that he has found an offensive system that doen’t mandate Tech going up against Florida, Bama, LSU, or Georgia for players to be successful. That’s not a fight Tech is going to win often.

I think the 3-4 is actually a better fit for Tech long term because, similarly, it reduces the requirement for multiple big defensive linemen. Further, because there are only three, you can increase your depth there by only have 8 or so rather than having to carry 12 or so on scholarship. I think there are enough “tweener” guys out there for Tech to run that defense with some effectiveness.

The issue I’d take with what you say is that, as fans, we need to stop worrying about a national championship. I think Spurrier said while he was at UF that his goal every year was to win the conference and anything after that was beyond his control. As a fan, the two things I want every year are to win our conference and to beat y’all. Any honest Tech fan would say that last year was a bit hollow because we had the ball run down our throat by UGA. It was a bitter loss.

Burdell

VT is gonna get THUMPED badly by Boise State.

VT has had huge talent losses, and Boise State
has pratically every single 2009 stater back.

Despite 2 good RBs, only 1 at a time gets the ball. VT’s offense is “mediocre” at best. However, VT lost 8 Junior/Senior starters on Defense. Bud Foster is in SERIOUS trouble on his side of the ball.

I also look for BC to upset VT in Chestnut Hill on September 25th.

F$U has lost several KEY players in the last 2 weeks due to crime, suspnesion, injury, etc. F$U is gonna have HUGE issues on offense, but their defense will be better, but not enough to carry an severely weakend offense. That exact same O-Line didnt impress last year.

UNC
GT put up over 400 yards of offense on UNC’s so-called “NFL-caliber” defense last year. While GT has several new faces on the O-Line, GT’s
O-Line is gonnna be MUCH better than last year. GT will beat UNC in Chapel Hill. UNC has 2 weeks off after game 1 against LSU. GT will have played 2 “tune-up” games prior to UNC. GT is gonna shock everyone when they win in Chapel Hill.

Mark it down:
GT is going to DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-STROY VT in Blacksburg.

After weeks of endless whining by Beamer after losing to GT in 2009,
dont be surprised if CPJ “makes a point” by winning by 20+.

Miami will be the toughest team GT faces all year, including GeorgiE.

Miami is HUGE across both the O-Line and D-Line, and also has practically every single starter back from 2009. Jacory Harris will be MUCH better in his 2nd year as starter, and wont be hampered by that mid-seaosn broken right thumb.

Saturday, November 13th:

Clemson at F$U
Miami at GT

The winner of these 2 games will play in the ACC-CG in Charlotte.

Let me say I am in no way trying to brag about Alabama but it has frustrated me the last few years that so called college football guru’s have overlooked what Saban was building at Alabama. But people are overlooking alot about Alabama still even after a national championship and no matter how many people Alabama proves wrong these people are still haard headed about it.I don’t understand it if Georgia was on top now I would admit it and not try to prop up my team when they don’t deserve it. People cannot leave their bias out of it and continue to be proven wrong making themselves look like they don’t know as much about college football as they let on. Winning is supposed to send a statement to everybody but even when Alabama wins it is percieved as a fluke year, the SEc was down, etc. Roll Tide! “Act like you’ve been there before” Coach Paul Bear Bryant. I am trying to coach.

George Stein

August 18th, 2010

And from a Tech fan’s point of view about UGA, I think we would all agree that we wish that clown in Birmingham who talked about Richt on the hot seat was right. Tech fans love to make fun of his tan and his hair, but the truth is we know UGA found its coach that they didn’t have under Goff and Donnan. Richt has increased the talent level to probably one of the top 6 or 8 in the country (and higher if the reports about the Wilder kid are true) and it looks like he has the right people in place to coach them when they get there. The defense was attrocious by any measure the past few years.

As I’ve said many times before, y’all’s offensive line will be the biggest friend to Murray and the new defense because your offense should actually bear a strong resemblance to Tech’s in that y’all are going to pound the rock the whole damn game and keep the defense off the field and protect the QB. It doesn’t hurt to have two horses in the backfield either.

Back River – You are completely wrong. Sure, the caliber of talent that Navy played when Paul Johnson was there was nowhere near as high as it is at Georgia Tech. But at the same time, the guys he was playing with were 0 stars on Rivals. He was playing with guys that are nowhere near as talented as he has here, guys whose first priority at school was not to play football, but to serve their country. In order to do these, they all had to meet height and weight requirements, had extra school work and Navy work to do, in addition to football. He consistently went 8-4, 9-3 with guys that were on no one else’s radar in college football.

In summary, of course he wasn’t facing the caliber of defenses at Navy as he is now, but look who he was playing with.. Nobody.

Agree that UNC likely wins the Coastal. Losing one of the defensive studs will still leave that D as the best in the land. Offensively they only can show upside! No way they could be worse!! Thus they will be a much improved team if the Offense improves at all! They are a threat to be in NC talk.

VPI just lost too much on defense. And has that offense ever been top notch??? Maybe once back in the M.Vick days but overall the VPI Offense has never caused Defenses to shake. It is the vaunted Bud Foster D’s and Beamer Ball that make them tough. The D simply lost too much talent. They will lose 3 games this year/ 4 or more if they lose to BSU.

Right on Tony. Either the majority of bloggers on this thread are biased against UNC, or they don’t follow the team closely. UNC’s defense is as good as advertised, despite the fact that GaTech rolled over them last year. I believe Tech lost to either Miami or VaTech last year, while UNC beat both, including VaTech in Blacksburg. People tend to forget (ignore) this, as well as the fact that UNC was very banged up on offensive line last year. They played with defensive player on the O-line. They are healthy this year and the offense has played well in pre-season. In addition, they have 3 highly touted, but inexperienced receivers last year who did not know which way to run. J. Boyd and Dwight Jones are killer receivers, not to mention Little. TE Pianalto could be an All-American at that position. People don’t know about QB Renner, who was the most accurate passer in the elite 11 (Murray was in that camp) last year. He is also very mobile. He stood out in the Spring game. You have been warned (but I believe everyone already knows it, but do not want to admit it.)!

True, not saying A&M is any better, but they seemed to turn up the running game towards the end of the season. Both kids are very strong and talented. Having both of them fresh coming in on tired DLines will be good as well as them being a threat to take pressure of AJ Green. It will be very tough for D Coord if they turn up the running game to try and contain them as well as not leave AJ in single man coverage.

As a UGA fan I am tired of hearing both UGA and Tech fans say how they are going to hands down beat the other this year. The last two years have shown that either team can beat the other and I see no reason why this year will be any different. Both teams are overhauling their defense and both have big question marks on offense. UGA with the QB and Tech having to replace big pieces losing one of their best running backs and receiver. Reality is that no fan on either side would put up their life savings to bet who would win the game coming up in November. The good thing is this is actually a series again and that might help one or the other if we can both be highly ranked at the end of the season. Both of these teams could have a really good year or a mediocre one depending on how fast they can grow up.

Vanilla but he wins. He will have his shots at titles just like he has in the past, close but no close enough. I guess you can’t fix stupid dustin and jb as both of you clearly are!

Murray was what 8-22 the other day with 2 picks? You have no depth behind him and think you deserve to be ranked ahead of GT who has 15 starters back and the 2 time ACC coach of the year, defending ACC CHAMPS and with a new DC who has won on the elite NFL level??? Dustin and jb, feel free to put down the kool-aid for goodness sake and if you live anywhere near athens, please get checked for herpes! I’m just sayin…..

P.S….. I heard lindsay lohan is going to enroll at the cesspool when she heard you guys were #1 in throwing a party. Congrats guys even though it won’t translate into wins on the field, just keep having top 5 classes though in recruiting and adding players like lemay who is a failure and not even playing this season because he has character issues or adding wilder to your glorious class so that teams like us and KENTUCKY with 3 star kids can beat you in your own backyard! 1995 6-5-1
1996 6-6
1997 7-5
1998 6-6
2000 8-4
2002 8-5
2006 6-10
2007 7-6

Saban’s spent 16 years as a coach, 4 were 6 win seasons, 2 were 7 win seasons, 2 were 8 win seasons.

There is a reason that Alabama wins but normally does’nt dismantle a team. I think I know why when Alabama gets a big lead or seems to have an advatage Alabama lets up alittle we’ve seen this before from the Georgia game in 08 to even the NC game when Colt McCoy went out of the game.I think I know why #1 Saban wins with class oh you will be dominated in other ways on the field but why show everybody what you don’t have to show and still get the win?It is a smart strategy IMO. Alabama could keep the pedal down and pad stats like Florida did and Texas and just pile up the points but instead Bama will let off the gas and bring in the back-ups or take a knee like when they beat Florida for the SEC championship last year while in touchdown/field goal range. We know Florida would’ve not let up and just piled up more points and stats but Saban has class and respect for other coaches. Other teams just keep it locked down and show everybody what they do.The coaches at Bama only show what they want you to see. Roll Tide!

FSU- I can see the noles finally having a breakout year. Defense should be improved and Ponder back on fire. I don’t see a championship though. Just a return to 9 wins or more and another step in the right direction.

Tech- Offensively the jackets will be stellar again. Defensively I have no idea but they can’t be any worse on their run defense than they were in the UGA game. I can see another ACC title for Tech and I think this is an appropriate ranking for them.

VT- Overrated this year. Good team this year and a top 20 team but not a top 15 team. Schedule is too tough and too many starters lost on D. And Tyrod Taylor I’m just not impressed with. Never have been. He’s the most overrated qb in college football.

Wisconsin- Its time we give the big 10 a little more love and I think Wisconsin deserves to be ranked here. The upper tier teams in the big 10 are decent football teams and they are physical- Iowa, Wisc, OSU, Penn St- they showed us last year in bowl season how physical they can be. I know I’ll get flamed for this, especially since I am an acknowledged SEC homer, but I really do think the top 4 Big 10 teams mentioned above are good, solid football teams.

UNC- The player/agent scandal here is a lot bigger than Tony is letting on. Its putting a pall over the program. I think UNC wasn’t that good to begin with and with the ensuing NCAA mess I see this team headed for a collapse. Wayyy overrated.

I agree with you that the south has the best teams. However, I’m willing to bet the house that there won’t be more than 15 combined SEC and ACC teams in the final top 25 polls. Wins and losses against each other just don’t allow for that to happen. So far the list is weighted way too much to the SEC and ACC just for the sake of stirring up interest amongst his readership–Atlanta is the hub of the south and the article appears in the AJC. I think it leaves Tony open for criticism questioning his honesty by leaving out the rest of the country.

I have a real hard time understanding how Tech loses Dwyer, D. Thomas and Morgan and doesn’t miss a beat. Stephen Hill may make some plays, but isn’t going to be as good as Thomas was this season and I don’t think that Tech has anyone as good as Dwyer. As for the D, schemes do not cover up for poor talent. Further, Tech cannot replicate in practice what its D will see on Saturdays which is the real problem, not schemes and coaching. The same offensive advantage Tech has by knowing that its opponents won’t be able to show its D the triple option is the same disadvantage Tech’s D has when it has to prepare for a pro-style offense. Tech finishes out of the Top 25 this year IMHO and will slide into mediocrity as less and less talent become interested in being part of Johnson’s offense. Losing Nick Marshall who could have been a star in Johnson’s system at QB because he’d rather play DB or WR at Georgia is the beginning of the end. When Nesbitt finishes and ends up back in Greene Co. rather than the NFL, you can start nailing the coffin shut.

George Stein…I just have a feeling that this is Miami’s year. They have recruited to well over the past 4 years and I just think this is the year they break out. The #1 recruiting class they had in ‘07 are juniors now and more experienced and I think its their time. I think GT is overrated, VT has huge questions on defense and if UNC loses Austin and Little for the year, its only going to make the Coastal easier to win. If it wasn’t for the brutal schedule alot more people would have Miami higher and a national title contender, but playing at Ohio St, Pitt and Clemson in consecutive weeks is a nightmare and you cannot win a national title scheduling like that. But they will win the ACC, don’t be shocked to finally see a Miami/FSU ACC title game this year.

MJ, I tend to agree that Miami is about to rise. We’ll see if Shannon can be as good a game coach as he is a recruiter. But everyone knows The U has been a sleeping giant for about 6 years now. And you should be proud of the schedule. I wish Tech had the nads to schedule a non-conference schedule like that. I expect VT, GT, UNC, Climpsun, & FSU to give The U everything they want in the conference games, but I expect Miami to win at least four of them.

mj,

Those are some interesting points in favor of Miami. I had them rated not that high simply because of that schedule which is brutal. The ACC is pretty well balanced with good teams so that you can never just take a week off and then having Ohio State and Pitt on top of their schedule is just downright hard. Even if they can get up for that triumvirate of OSU, Pitt, and then Clemson its hard to keep that type of emotional high going week after week and I could see them losing an upset or 2 in a letdown type game.

G Stein…I am all for scheduling tougher non conference games, more teams and colleges should do it instead of taking the Texas Longhorn way out like last year and schedule SMU, LA Tech, Wyoming and N. Texas. Then when they finally play someone good like Alabama they are toast. My point is just do it in moderation. I love playing Ohio St but thats asking alot to go to Columbus, Pitt and Clemson back to back to back and then head home to play FSU. You can win the ACC but not the national title. Another cream puff instead of Pitt would have been better. If Miami beats Ohio St in Columbus they have proved their point, no need to go to Pitt.

Here are the facts…..

1) You are scum of the southeast and are the laughing stock of college football for all the wrong reasons…see arrests and #1 ranking as a party school and your AD has disgraced your school to no end in sight!

2) yes, you beat GT last year but my point was you lost to kentucky and i believe ugay was better but played terrible. We played terrible vs ugay and did you stop nesbitt in the 2nd half sir?? NOPE.. If he played all 4 quarters, you would have lost, and i know several ugay fans who agreed with that statement, not to mention the drop pass at the end. We beat ourselves. Missed field goals, stupid penalties, dropping passes with nobody within 20 yards, throwing hail mary passes with plenty of time on the clock and in ugay territory at the end was not wise either. Those are the facts. We stunk and still you had to hang on for victory in the last minute. I don’t think you watched the same game i did, but you guys believe you will win a national title every year. YAWN…

3) You were #1 in the nation only to lose 3 times with the #1 pick in the nfl draft and loads of talent surrounding him. That equals failure and OVERRATED! Last year, preseason #13 in the nation, you lose how many times and go to shreveport against the 4th best team from texas! You didn’t even crack the top 35 at season end! Correct? You going to dispute that??? The truth hurts.

4) You continue to recruit top 5-10 classes only to get railed by florida year after year after year. You want me to copy and paste the scores for you to see what woodshed beatings look like? You talk about our fans, but half your fans were gone at halftime of the famous ” blackout” or “wipeout” vs bama, then in jacksonville you morons were running for the hills at half also down there. Your fans are jokes. I saw GT beat ugay in athens 25-6 in baseball and your fans were gone before the 4th inning! The 4th!!!! What loyal fan base you have. Again…THE FACTS!

5) YOU HAVE A FRESHMAN QB WITH NO DEPTH BEHIND HIM!!!!! YOU PLAY IN THE SEC. I WILL BE THE GUY THAT SAID I TOLD YOU SO, WHEN HE GETS THROTTLED BY SEC DEFENSES AND AL GROH WHO LIKE I SAID, WON A SUPER BOWL COACHING DEFENSE. YOU WILL SUCK THIS YEAR, SO QUIT CRYING ABOUT GT RANKED HIGHER AND WHY UGAY GETTING NO RESPECT. HOW ABOUT LIVING UP TO EXPECTATIONS, THEN COME BACK RUNNING YOUR PETER PLEASERS ABOUT GT ARTICLES!!!! I also have to defend the Jackets a little. We were supposed to have played Ole Miss and UGA out of conference this year but Ole Miss bailed. We filled it with Kansas – definitely not Ohio State but still, they are a few years removed from winning the Orange Bowl (which is more than we can say!).

thats my point lewis. we’ dont have nearly the size fanbase that uga does. our school itself is half the size, and a decent portion of that is barely aware that college football exists. its not a secret that tech football has been pretty solidly mediocre the past decade +. things seem to be turning around, so im sure we’re picked up some bandwagon fans over the last two years, but if youre just going to pick a college team to cheer for in georgia, uga is the one most people with no school affiliation are going to go for.

maybe its because most the people i hang out/ go to games with are also grads, but i cant say i’ve met too many people who are hard core tech fans who dont have some affiliation with the school.

Tide Rising

MJ,

You’ll get no disagreement from me. That is a downright brutal schedule. Way too tough to seriously compete for a national title. Too many minefields to go 12-0. OSU and Pitt are both predicted to be bcs conference champions and South Florida as we’ve all seen is a dangerous team. Plus your division is pretty tough.

I think everyone should try to schedule at least one big time intersectional game per year. At Bama we typically just try to schedule one big time opponent per year, someone that figures to be a top 10 team or has been a top 10 team lately. We played no. 1 OU back to back in the early 2000s, Clemson was preseason #8 in 08, VT was preseason top 10 last year, and Penn state has had 3 straight 11 win seasons.

The rest of our schedule is pretty much patsys even if Duke is a bcs member team. This is the format most teams choose- one big time noncon with 3 patsys. Some teams don’t play anyone bigtime nonconference. Some like Georgia have lately scheduled 2 decent middle tier teams but not a top caliber team that’s usually a top shelf 1-3 team in their conference. I would give them a break lately because Tech is now a top tier team in their conference so if they play a bad Colorado team at least they still have one big time noncon opponent in Tech. Florida I would give a break to also because historically FSU has been a power and will be again. Its only lately that they’ve fallen off these last several years.

I’m assuming your AD is just laying the groundwork to get more exposure right now. But scheduling Pitt and OSU and USF all in one season borders on crazy. 2 of those 3 max would still be a tough schedule and playing only 1 of those 3 would be respectable since it would just doing what everyone else does. Anyway, good luck with that difficult schedule.

what?

They only people calling Athens a cesspool are losers like yourself who got rejected by a coed on your only visit there. I never ONCE, cried about UGA not getting any respect. You play in a Big Bowl for the first time since Abe Lincoln was president and you think you belong there. Tony, I believe your pregnant silence in regards to the outcry against UNC being rated so highly needs to be broken. You might begin with the fact that almost every major poll has UNC in their top twenty, and that the UNC-Mighty SEC power LSU game is rated a toss-up. Here is some more ammo you might want to use: any years from now, “UNC LB Carter’s grandchildren will have plenty of material available to generate an intriguing debate concerning the abilities of their grandfather. What’s more impressive – Carter’s string of four straight blocked kicks in ’08, an unprecedented feat in modern FBS history, or his 211.5 power quotient in the weight room, thanks to a 440-pound bench, 405-pound power clean, 600-pound squat, 37 ½-inch vertical jump, 10-2 broad jump, and a 4.39 40-yard dash. Go ahead and read that last sentence one more time, just to let those statistics soak in.” UNC has top linebacker corp and top DL corp in America.

Mr What..The face of your program was your AD. I can’t help but feel sorry to remind you that your school is the laughing stock of the nation. I can’t help it but LOSER comes to mind! Let’s recap…

Evans ( who is married) driving while he was drunk with another women who was NOT his wife. He gets pulled over and asks if he can be taken to a hotel and the woman reminds the cop of how powerful mr evans is over and over again, like this makes a difference to law enforcement anyway??
The story hits it’s peak in full force when the cop asks ” Why are those red panties between your lap”? He replies that he is JUST FRIENDS with her and just holding them for her because she was drunk. JUST FRIENDS AND JUST HOLDING THEM HUH…I WISH I COULD HAVE SEEN HIS WIFES FACE WHEN SHE HEARD HIS STUPID REPLY WHEN ASKED ABOUT THE PANTIES. Wow!!!! Is this made for jerry springer tv or what folks? It couldn’t have happened to a better program up in the cesspool of the south.

What, next time you refer to GT as losers, just take another look at your joke of a program man. You huys put the O in overrated. GT does not pull in top 5-10 classes every year, or normally ranked as high as ugay is each season, so explain to me how GT is overrated again? We have a coach in his 3rd season and already has a conference title and BCS game under his belt and i don’t recall anyone picking us to do that last year. We win on pure coaching and execution, and won with our offense. Now you can look for the defense to get more stops and nothing will change on offense with us scoring about 30 per game on everyone. Good luck when we come into town, you will need it. CPJ will go to 2-0 in the cesspool.

I disagree Tide, I love them Dawgs, but I’m not yet convinced that they are top tier this year. I think that just like last year the SEC has two big, old mangy dogs, Alabama and Florida, a few unproven “teenage” dogs like UGA, LSU, Auburn, Ole Miss, and maybe S.Carolina, and then 5 pups hiding up on the porch, Miss State, Vandy, Kentucky, Arkansas, and Tennessee. And I’m more hopeful than convinced that Georgia doesn’t belong on the porch with the pups lol

I mean that in terms of the SEC. The first seven SEC teams I mentioned would be a force to be reckoned with were they in any other conference………….

Bama is not going to suck, they just have a tougher schedule now that they play Penn St and Florida on top of a tough western division. And on top of that its REALLY hard to repeat. Those who think we have no Offense based on last year…we played half a season w/ an Oline held together w/ duct tape. Lost our starting TE and RB for half the season. Don’t count on that same picture this season.
It’ll all become obvious to you guys on 9/4. UNC will be proving you can’t live in the past in college football…unless you’re from the SEC. It will be painfully obvious to LSU….with or without Marvin.

MJ: Talk about a DOH! moment. I’m sitting here with Bama’s schedule opened and totally missed the fact that they play Florida in the regular season. I’ll bet the other conferences are loving that. Chances are pretty good that they will meet again in the SEC Championship and if they split the two games some weak sister like Ohio State will slip in the Championship game.

Right now, and for the last several years, winning the SEC Championship is more meaningful than winning the BCS Championship. I really wish that the Big 10 and Big 12 would get back to being real football conferences and that Miami and FSU get back to being good, consistent teams. When you add the “new” Ga Tech and if folks are right about N. Carolina along with VTech, the ACC should be a tough conference too. However the hopes I had for that conference when they added VT, BC, and Miami have yet to be realized.

The PAC 10 is (and always has been) a joke especially now that USC can’t hire professionals any more. The Big 12 really for the last 10 years has only had Texas and Oklahoma. And OU can’t win a bowl game under Stoops………… The Big Easy doesn’t even deserve mentioned lol. Right now there is no arguing that the SEC IS the premier conference, even in it’s weakened state. Let’s hope Dooley can get Tennessee turned around and Richt can FINALLY find a way to instill some discipline in his players. Florida is there, Alabama is there and Auburn is on the way (God it pains me to write that lol). Nutt is turning Ole Miss around. Things should be really interesting in the next few years………

Mark it down–Dawgs win the SEC east and play bama for the title.

JB, we can agree to disagree all we want, but people should be careful what they wish for. Go back and read that idiot’s post bro. I’m not a homer and blinded by the love of my team. I think we will go 10-2 this year and the VT game will decide our fate in regards to another title. We have a target on our back no question, but repeating as ACC champs is very possible if our defense improves and it will. We need Nesbitt to stays healthy and i feel CPJ is a winner so i think our program is on the rise! People said after lsu game, ” well GT got killed and everyone has it figured out now” … We won the ACC title and went to a BCS game last year. Iowa beat us pretty good up front as ugay did in atlanta, people will say it’s been figured out. CPJ just wins! We will live and die by our offensive line. When we don’t execute blocking as 1st half vs ugay, iowa game and miami game, we get burned. When we block and play assignment ball up front, we chew the clock up and put the pressure on the other team and WIN!!

Do you jb and what, really believe GT is not deserving of it’s ranking or just not a good team? How about a legit answer please.

Carolina’s offense should be improved with healthly o-line, all conference caliber tight-end back, and more experienced recievers. Yates is a question mark, but think he’ll be improved with a better cast around him. The defense will be good, probably not as good as advertised. In regards to Tech-UNC game last year, remember 08′ when Carolina’s defense kept Tech’s offense largely in check and won in Chapel Hill. In other words, past performance is not always indicative of future returns. In regards to UGA-Tech bickering. UGA has a top 15 program and has enjoyed a good run. You can not argue about what a great place Athens is to catch a game or the job Mark Richt has done on a consistent basis. Tech has a good program too, has an offense that is great to watch and wins with talent that is not always nationally recognized. Paul Johnson is an excellent coach who will do good things at Tech. My prediction is that UGA wins 8 games, Tech wins 8 games, UNC wins 9 games, wins the coastal, loses in the ACC championship game, and has a better basketball team this year. Falcons win the NFC South, Braves lose in the first round of the playoffs but actually sell out two of the playoff games, Hawks finish 3rd in the East and Dustin Johnson wins the Masters next year

++++++++++++++

When I comes to college football I do. I like to talk crap about teams and conferences and in order to do so I have to see the games so I can see the teams. I don’t know HOW I got into the World Cup this year. I’m old, Americans didn’t play soccer when I was coming up.

As to the UGA/GaTech thing? I’m a Dawg. I’ve been meaning to watch more tech games since Johnson got there but I didn’t last year. I don’t understand how that mickey mouse out dated offense is winning as it’s easy to beat. All it takes to shut down an option offense is discipline. Which is why I don’t understand how the Dawgs beat Tech last year since Mark Richt teams have NO discipline. Watching the Dawgs the last couple of years has been painful. They find new ways to snatch defeat out of certain victory too often.

in short, I just love college football. But I don’t give a rats ass about pro football. I’ll watch the Falcons if I have nothing else to do, but if they aren’t playing, I’m not watching. But on Saturdays? I’m not doing ANYTHING but watching college football from 12:00 til 12:00 (or when ever the last West Coast night game ends). My favorite team is UGA and my second is OU. But I’m not a mindless fanatic. If they suck I’ll say so. I will always cheer for them, but I won’t always bet on them lol.

UNC will have a good season, but likely no better than 8-4.
I do believe UNC will beat LSU.

The 2008 GT loss in Chapel Hill had more to do with GT losing
BOTH starting Offensive tackles to injury prior to the UNC game.
And then, losing BOTH starting Offesnive Guards during that game.
All that in addition to the fumbles.

2009 was a much better indicator of GT performance with everyone healthy. 400+ yds of Offense, and 47+ minutes TOP.

UNC will have a good year, but wont win the Coastal.

I think Miami is likely the team to beat in the Coastal.

Joe Dirt, thanks for serving our country man. Good point on the PJ offense eating up the clock. It works well when the other team doesn’t do the same thing. Richt and Co. showed a lot of people how to handle Tech last year as did Iowa. i think that will be the game planning for most coaches this year when they play Tech. The change up on tech’s defensive scheme will cost Tech a game or two just like UGA’s change up will cost us a game or two until the kids get use to it. Losing so much talent at key positions will hurt Tech tremendously this year I don’t care what anybody says. Tech lost four big time stars. I would say the rankings are correct at this point. I think the ACC will be even more competitive this year than last and to be honest probably the best conference to watch this year. Kind of like the Big 12 was the best conference to watch last year.

It is amazing to me to see that so many people are so dumb. GT’s defense doesn’t go against the option every week it goes against the Scout Team that runs the offense of the opposing team. Stop making this an excuse for the bad defensive year last year. Losing Morgan and Burnett is just that a lost. So IMHO we lose 2 and gain 11 players that will be better this year than last. The last time I checked it took 11 to play and both Morgan and Burnett will let you know that their big plays are a result of someone else stepping up big. GT has a lot of talent and I am excited about seeing what they are going to do. I really believe we will be better every year for the next 4 years with the talent we have right now.
I like our ranking right now because it shows our guys how important it is to Beat UGA and Win your Bowl Game. We will win both this year. Our issue in the past was OL and DL both will be improved this year. Our skill positions are improved this year. Bay Bay was a great player, but he was an unknown when Calvin was here. Stephen Hill and Tyler Melton will be a great replacement for Bay Bay. 2 is better than 1.

The ACC has a chance to really get some clout back in its possession. VT over Boise; UNC over LSU; Miami over OSU; FSU over OU; GT over KU; UVA just play tough against USC will really make an impact nationally for this conference. It is very doable. These are all must wins for many reasons. It solidifies the power rankings for each team and helps build the interest in the head to head games to come. GT needs to repeat and VT needs to only lose to GT. Miami needs to lose to only GT and VT and UNC needs to only lose to GT, VT and Miami. That way you keep 5 to 6 ACC teams in the top 20 and two teams in the Top 10 by season end. Unfortunately, this means that Clemson will end up with 4 loses. Which is another reason why the ACC needs to step up. This scenario shows just how parity in a conference can be a plus as long as we win our out of conference games. Clemson beat Auburn! GO JACKETS!!! Let’s get to work ACC!

++++++++++++

No Dostoyevskiy, I do not. It is not true so I there is no way I COULD agree. There used to be some parity in conferences, but given the results of the last 10 years or so, it is quite clear that the SEC is dominant among ALL conferences. Ten years ago this wasn’t the case, but sadly, it is now.

A mid pack UGA beat out of ACC champions Ga. Tech last year. Alabama humiliated Va. Tech (not that it mattered to the media fools who rank teams, they KEPT ranking Va Tech higher and higher after wards). UGA beat ACC champions Ga Tech as I already stated. weak assed South Carolina beat Clemson. Florida beat Florida State. I don’t remember all the results, but I think 2 ACC teams won against SEC in state rivalries. I do know that SEC vs ACC football all-time, head-to-head, football record: the SEC holds an 251-117-10 (.677) all-time advantage. That’s not small.

For the Big 10 in the last ten years it’s not very good either. Oh yeah, the top Big 10 schools have played the worst SEC schools a few times and beaten them, but in bowl games, which are supposed to be the best against the best, the SEC has ruled the Big 10. It’s not even close.

Personally, I want it to get better, but it hasn’t. Ohio State IS going to the BCS Championship Game, not because they should be there, but because unless they lose against Miami (a distinct possibility) they don’t play ANYONE else the rest of the season.

In the bowl games last year 10 out of 12 SEC teams went. Granted, several really didn’t deserve to go and a couple were over ranked, LSU comes quickly to mind. Of the 4 SEC teams that went to bowl games and LOST, (S. Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, and LSU) only LSU had a winning record in the SEC and they got cheated two wins.

Of the Six SEC teams that WON their bowl games (Georgia, Auburn, Florida, Ole Miss, Arkansas, and Alabama), only two had winning conference records, Florida and Alabama. The National Championship was decided in the SEC Championship when Alabama beat Florida. Neither Texas nor Ohio State could make it through a season in the SEC undefeated. Boise State (currently ranked 5 in the nation) would be lucky to make it through an SEC schedule with a winning record. Virginia Tech (ranked 6th) would have at least three losses. I doubt a single team in the PAC-10 or the Big 10 could make it in the SEC with less than two losses. It just isn’t close.

Fred, you make a good case for the ACC and SEC not being equals in the PAST. How about the upcoming year? Pls do not refer to the past in your assessment. Pls look at this year’s teams.

georgia—once relevant in the early 80s when they could recruit all those thugs that could barely read, but no more. Tech is the new horse in this state—mark it down–tech beats Ga again in athens like a rented mule.

CrackDaddy: I can’t. I can only go on the recent history. Had you read my earlier post you would see that I have high hopes for the ACC (if not realized this year, then perhaps next). Today/tonight, UNC fans have told me that they are ready to rock. VTech is always competitive if not over ranked, but on any given day can play with the best, depending on the day lol. Last year, Miami was a young talented team struggling for some consistency. Have they found it? I neither know nor care as long as they beat Ohio State lol. But seriously, they played some weeks like the top team in the nation and other weeks like they couldn’t beat a Jr High team. We’ll see how they do. FSU has a ton of talent as well and we will see if they are for real when they go out of conference and play Oklahoma (my second favorite team). I really think FSU will thump OU but again, we will have to see. They were inconsistent last year. I have really seen nothing to suggest that Ga Tech will suck so now I’m talkin g three good teams in the ACC, maybe even top tier teams. UNC posters here have served notice that THEY are ready to rock. If so, then 4 good teams in the ACC makes them viable. We have to see how it all shakes out. I haven’t mentioned BC because to be honest, I haven’t read or seen anything about BC this year.

In short (while being long lol0 I HOPE the ACC is full of fire works. I’m kind of tired of the SEC being the top conference in football. After a few years, it breeds complacency. Given what I have seen and read so far though, I think the ACC is the only conference that might be able to challenge the current SEC dominance.

Of course Ohio State is once again the top mediocre team in a weak sister conference so if they win out, they will get the “chance” to play in the BCS Championship. As I’m looking at it now, they could possibly win against anyone other than an SEC team. Or maybe a strong, undefeated ACC team. I think I would give kudo’s to an undefeated ACC team whereas I don’t think that other than Alabama that any SEC team has a chance of going undefeated. I HOPE the Dawgs do, bit I can’t see that happening. I think we will see Ohio State laying some undefeated team from a weak sister conference in the championship game.

I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

Yellow Fuzz, I just read where JDW earlier said “30-24, 8 out of 9, 38 out of 50″ referring to Georgia wins over tech. Is that accurate?

I hope UNC shuts everybody up. They return 10 of 11 starters on offense and 9 of 11 on defense. They should be loaded. And for anybody who says they have one nothing in the ACC so they cannot be ranked ahead of Georgia Tech or Virginia Tech, I think that is a bunch of bs. I am not necessarily saying that UNC is the best team in the ACC but I do believe that they are stacked and that the offense will be much improved.

UNC lost 5 games last year, but 3 of them were 3 points or less. Georgia Tech by 17 and Virginia by 13 were the others. The problems were on offense: rushing – 3.6 yds. per attempt, passing – 6.2 yds. per attempt.

T.J. Yates put up the following numbers: 214/355, 60.3%, 2,136 yds.,14 TD, 15 INT, 6.0 yds/Att, Passer Rating of 115.4. Pass protection was a problem, as Yates had -66 yds. rushing. LT Carl Gaskins returns from missing the season last year, and he will protect Yates’ back side.

GT gas handled UNC, VT, Clemson fine the last two years

I assume you mean “has handled”…you won last year and it was UNC’s worst game…don’t expect it to happen that way again…also, UNC won the previous year 24-7 (or 21-7 whatever it was) and GT didn’t even score until late in the 4th quarter.

We will take care of that OFF this year, can’t wait.

UNC has beaten Miami 3 straight, and won at VT last year. Tony is wrong though…the Heels will finish in the Top 10 now that some of our top OL talent is healthy and experienced.

Can’t wait to fly from RDU to ATL in a few weeks to watch the season start in the GA Dome.

Really?
