Countdown to No. 1: Can No. 14 Georgia Tech win another ACC title?

We continue our countdown to our preseason Top 25, which will conclude on Friday with No. 1 through No. 5.

Today we have 11-15 and you’ll find three ACC Coastal teams: North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech. Now the round robin with those three and No. 20 Miami is going to be fun. Some smart people are telling me I have Miami rated too low. We’ll see.

Again, let me know what you think. We will have teams 6-10 on Thursday.

15. Florida State

**–It will be a good season if:  The defense improves just a little bit. Florida State struggled last season and Mark Stoops, brother of Bob, comes in as defensive coordinator. But we wonder if the Seminoles have the horses to be really good. If so, FSU can get to the ACC championship game.

**–It will be a disappointing season if: QB Christian Ponder does not bounce back to his 2009 form. The senior was averaging 321.8 yards of total offense  per game when he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in the ninth game against Clemson. He completed 68 percent of his passes last season and is playing behind a great offensive line.

14. Georgia Tech

**–It will be a good season if: Quarterback Joshua Nesbitt stays healthy. Nesbitt is the straw who stirs the cocktail that is Paul Johnson’s high-octane offense. Nesbitt has an adequate backup in Tevin Washington but Nesbitt can’t miss long stretches of play.

**–It will be a disappointing season if: The defense does not improve. It should as Al Groh, one of the best defensive minds in the game, takes over. The Yellow Jackets also have to replace four NFL draft choices (two on offense, two on defense) who were difference makers.

13. Virginia Tech

**–It will be a good season if: Bud Foster is able to rebuild his defense. Nobody is worried about the offense as running backs Darren Evans (2008 ACC freshman of the year) and Ryan Williams (2009 ACC freshman of the year) return along with senior quarterback Tyrod Taylor.

**–It will be disappointing season if: The Hokies fall in the opener against Boise State. Last season Virginia Tech lost its first game to Alabama in Atlanta. That game exposed some weaknesses that teams like Georgia Tech were able to exploit. Beat Boise and Virginia Tech could be in the BCS title discussion in November.

12. Wisconsin

**–It will be a good season if: Running back John Clay can pick up where he left off last season. Clay finished the season with six consecutive games over 100 yards and finished as the Big Ten’s leading rusher with 1,517 yards.

**–It will be a disappointing season if: The Badgers lose back to back games with Ohio State (Oct. 16 in Madison) and Iowa (Nov. 23 at Iowa City). Wisconsin will be favored in every other game it plays and a split in those two games probably puts the Badgers in a BCS game.

11. North Carolina

**–It will be a good season if: Senior quarterback T.J. Yates rediscovers his 2007 form when he threw for over 2,600 yards. The defense is so good that if the Tar Heels get consistent play at quarterback, they can win the very tough ACC Coastal.

**–It will be a disappointing season if: Marvin Austin’s contact with agents keeps him out of action for an extended period of time. This North Carolina team is built around a defense that has at least six NFL Draft choices. It can’t afford to lose Austin and it can’t afford for this to be a major distraction.

If you want a coach who will finish in the top 5 for 15 seasons, Richt’s your guy.

If you want a coach that will finish in the top 5, 4 times, Saban’s your man.

Cesspool?
UGAY?

How old are you 5?

Beats us in something, anything on the athletic side of things and then talk. Otherwise, come visit me in my seat at Sanford “cesspool” Stadium and I’ll enjoy our brief in person conversation and personally introduce you to the difference between a UGA man and a Techno nerd.

Until then, STFU

Q Dog, Richt is going into his 10th season as a head coach. How has he finished in the top 5 15 times? Are you really giving Richt credit for Bobby Bowden’s success?

Case in point:

The now infamous “Timeout-gate” WLOCP, when UGA couldn’t even stop Brantley and the B & C squads from scoring.
(Granted, UGA DID score a TD with our alternates defending and since most Dawg fans had already left, the only applause came from Gator fans.)

FSU Top 5 finishes before Richt got there in 1986 as a coach:
0

While Richt was there form 1986-2000:
13

After Richt left in 2000:

Of course you’d give Richt credit, they got none before or after Richt coached with Bowden.

How many top 5 finishes did Saban have as an Asst coach? How many before he got there, after Saban left?

Tony, You need to move UNC down about 15 spots. WIsconsin is one of the 5 toughest teams to predict this year (along with Oregon, Stanford, Texas A&M, and Pitt). GT will actually be a BETTER team this year, but you have them ranked about right. The road schedule with and all those ranked teams is just too tough.

FSU? I THOUGHT they were going to be good, but every day a new story surfaces about how they want to compete with the Cesspool on the Fulmer Cup. Granted, I believe UGag’s Fulmer Cup is leading not only on points, but the Damon Evans’ case trumps ALL others this year.

I’d wait until the week of the Oklahoma game before predicting FSU’s year … let’s see who’s left of the roster then.

Q dog, uh, I mean Patrick, we get it. Saban sucks as a coach and Richt is the best coach in the sec, and we’ll just continue to suffer in mediocrity with our sorry azz coach. I’m cool with that and you’ll get no argument from me.

George Stein…I just have a feeling that this is Miami’s year. They have recruited to well over the past 4 years and I just think this is the year they break out. The #1 recruiting class they had in ‘07 are juniors now and more experienced and I think its their time. I think GT is overrated, VT has huge questions on defense and if UNC loses Austin and Little for the year, its only going to make the Coastal easier to win. If it wasn’t for the brutal schedule alot more people would have Miami higher and a national title contender, but playing at Ohio St, Pitt and Clemson in consecutive weeks is a nightmare and you cannot win a national title scheduling like that. But they will win the ACC, don’t be shocked to finally see a Miami/FSU ACC title game this year.

MJ, I tend to agree that Miami is about to rise. We’ll see if Shannon can be as good a game coach as he is a recruiter. But everyone knows The U has been a sleeping giant for about 6 years now. And you should be proud of the schedule. I wish Tech had the nads to schedule a non-conference schedule like that. I expect VT, GT, UNC, Climpsun, & FSU to give The U everything they want in the conference games, but I expect Miami to win at least four of them.

“Are you serious? Your own fans applauded when they scored? I can’t imagine a more humiliating gesture.”

True story. At that point all of the UGA fans had left the Gator Bowl. However, Richt did run down the sidelines to thank the UGA band for staying. The three words UGA fans hate to hear – time out Florida.

Tide Rising

mj,

Those are some interesting points in favor of Miami. I had them rated not that high simply because of that schedule which is brutal. The ACC is pretty well balanced with good teams so that you can never just take a week off and then having Ohio State and Pitt on top of their schedule is just downright hard. Even if they can get up for that triumvirate of OSU, Pitt, and then Clemson its hard to keep that type of emotional high going week after week and I could see them losing an upset or 2 in a letdown type game.
