Countdown to No. 1: Can No. 14 Georgia Tech win another ACC title?

We continue our countdown to our preseason Top 25, which will conclude on Friday with No. 1 through No. 5.

Today we have 11-15 and you’ll find three ACC Coastal teams: North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech. Now the round robin with those three and No. 20 Miami is going to be fun. Some smart people are telling me I have Miami rated too low. We’ll see.

Again, let me know what you think. We will have teams 6-10 on Thursday.

15. Florida State

**–It will be a good season if:  The defense improves just a little bit. Florida State struggled last season and Mark Stoops, brother of Bob, comes in as defensive coordinator. But we wonder if the Seminoles have the horses to be really good. If so, FSU can get to the ACC championship game.

**–It will be a disappointing season if: QB Christian Ponder does not bounce back to his 2009 form. The senior was averaging 321.8 yards of total offense  per game when he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in the ninth game against Clemson. He completed 68 percent of his passes last season and is playing behind a great offensive line.

14. Georgia Tech

**–It will be a good season if: Quarterback Joshua Nesbitt stays healthy. Nesbitt is the straw who stirs the cocktail that is Paul Johnson’s high-octane offense. Nesbitt has an adequate backup in Tevin Washington but Nesbitt can’t miss long stretches of play.

**–It will be a disappointing season if: The defense does not improve. It should as Al Groh, one of the best defensive minds in the game, takes over. The Yellow Jackets also have to replace four NFL draft choices (two on offense, two on defense) who were difference makers.

13. Virginia Tech

**–It will be a good season if: Bud Foster is able to rebuild his defense. Nobody is worried about the offense as running backs Darren Evans (2008 ACC freshman of the year) and Ryan Williams (2009 ACC freshman of the year) return along with senior quarterback Tyrod Taylor.

**–It will be disappointing season if: The Hokies fall in the opener against Boise State. Last season Virginia Tech lost its first game to Alabama in Atlanta. That game exposed some weaknesses that teams like Georgia Tech were able to exploit. Beat Boise and Virginia Tech could be in the BCS title discussion in November.

12. Wisconsin

**–It will be a good season if: Running back John Clay can pick up where he left off last season. Clay finished the season with six consecutive games over 100 yards and finished as the Big Ten’s leading rusher with 1,517 yards.

**–It will be a disappointing season if: The Badgers lose back to back games with Ohio State (Oct. 16 in Madison) and Iowa (Nov. 23 at Iowa City). Wisconsin will be favored in every other game it plays and a split in those two games probably puts the Badgers in a BCS game.

11. North Carolina

**–It will be a good season if: Senior quarterback T.J. Yates rediscovers his 2007 form when he threw for over 2,600 yards. The defense is so good that if the Tar Heels get consistent play at quarterback, they can win the very tough ACC Coastal.

**–It will be a disappointing season if: Marvin Austin’s contact with agents keeps him out of action for an extended period of time. This North Carolina team is built around a defense that has at least six NFL Draft choices. It can’t afford to lose Austin and it can’t afford for this to be a major distraction.

Lewis, you are pathetic, and understand nothing about the people who protected your right to say what you want and most importantly, your freedom! I laid my *ass on the line for scum like you to sit behind a cpu and run your mouth. I’m sure your an obama supporter, and would argue with legit facts until you were blue in the face pal. Keep livin the dream lewis and making excuses as you did in a previous post in regards to an idiot driving around in a car endangering the lives of everyone on the road! I can tell no women would want to marry someone as foolish as you, all they have to do is read your pathetic post in response to what wedding vows actually mean! Any man that can’t honor his vows to his wife and is a disrespectful and clearly unfaithful as evans was, i have no regard for… and i have always believed that you make your bed lewis, you can lay in it! I’m proud to have served lewis and would be willing to die for your rights and freedoms as an american at home or in a combat zone. You have no idea about what our guys and “my brother in arms” go through to protect freedom lewis. Lewis, i did not go to GT but have been a fan for 35 years! Do i need a GT degree to out charm or out smart you? I don’t think so man. You will never get it. Like i said lewis, you can’t fix stupid.

Dawginlex, thanks for the comment in regards to my service, you rubbed me the wrong way man. I too have always loved to rumble and i thought i was tough my whole life until i went to parris island bro. You are a man when you complete that training! lol

Shut up DirtGay. You are going to get struck by lightning for telling such lies. You’ll never convince people here that you were a Marine so give it up. Marines aren’t sissy cry-babies like you. Or whiny little name-callers. My father was a Marine and let me tell you, he was no pu$$y like you. This is the last time I’ll waste my time with you. Grow up some and then come back and post. You embarrass the entire GT nation… as small as that nation might be.

Lewis, I know. It’s just so funny to hear grown men prematurely celebrating the “lock” commitment from a 17-18 year old kid. He’ll probably change his mind 4 or 5 more times before signing day. You can’t “celebrate” a recruiting class until they all sign on the dotted line. Every fan base is guilty, but the Dawgs have been awfully loud about this kid.

Actually lewis, i would go as far as saying you are a waste of sperm!!!!! Get a life man, your on a GT blog for goodness sake running your d*ck sucker over and over again. I guess they didn’t want you trolling over there so you decided to grace us with your presence. The bottom line lewis, GT had a better season last year, finished ranked ahead of ugay and will be starting in front of you again. After september is gone, you won’t sniff the top 25 again. Don’t hate on GT because you are tired of looking at the polls and seeing us higher. Take your frustration out on your hand to some jerry springer re-runs man. Sounds like a perfect reunion for you.

Based on stats from the Virginia Tech web site, the Hokies have 6 players who started games last year. Here are the numbers of starts for those 6 players:
13
13
8
5
4
2
That equates to 31% of 11 X 13 games played. That is not “a lot” of starters returning on defense as is stated on the “Who Plays the Best Defense..” photo feature on the ajc.com sports page today

It was obvious to me where Wilder was going to sign. Florida doesn’t run a TB-centric offense, and he did not want to play DB at any school that has a bunch of TBs already. FSU needed the guy.

Fred, in my humble opinion, one conference is not significantly better than the other. Do you agree?
++++++++++++

No Dostoyevskiy, I do not. It is not true so I there is no way I COULD agree. There used to be some parity in conferences, but given the results of the last 10 years or so, it is quite clear that the SEC is dominant among ALL conferences. Ten years ago this wasn’t the case, but sadly, it is now.

A mid pack UGA beat out of ACC champions Ga. Tech last year. Alabama humiliated Va. Tech (not that it mattered to the media fools who rank teams, they KEPT ranking Va Tech higher and higher after wards). UGA beat ACC champions Ga Tech as I already stated. weak assed South Carolina beat Clemson. Florida beat Florida State. I don’t remember all the results, but I think 2 ACC teams won against SEC in state rivalries. I do know that SEC vs ACC football all-time, head-to-head, football record: the SEC holds an 251-117-10 (.677) all-time advantage. That’s not small.

For the Big 10 in the last ten years it’s not very good either. Oh yeah, the top Big 10 schools have played the worst SEC schools a few times and beaten them, but in bowl games, which are supposed to be the best against the best, the SEC has ruled the Big 10. It’s not even close.

Personally, I want it to get better, but it hasn’t. Ohio State IS going to the BCS Championship Game, not because they should be there, but because unless they lose against Miami (a distinct possibility) they don’t play ANYONE else the rest of the season.

In the bowl games last year 10 out of 12 SEC teams went. Granted, several really didn’t deserve to go and a couple were over ranked, LSU comes quickly to mind. Of the 4 SEC teams that went to bowl games and LOST, (S. Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, and LSU) only LSU had a winning record in the SEC and they got cheated two wins.

Of the Six SEC teams that WON their bowl games (Georgia, Auburn, Florida, Ole Miss, Arkansas, and Alabama), only two had winning conference records, Florida and Alabama. The National Championship was decided in the SEC Championship when Alabama beat Florida. Neither Texas nor Ohio State could make it through a season in the SEC undefeated. Boise State (currently ranked 5 in the nation) would be lucky to make it through an SEC schedule with a winning record. Virginia Tech (ranked 6th) would have at least three losses. I doubt a single team in the PAC-10 or the Big 10 could make it in the SEC with less than two losses. It just isn’t close.

CrackDaddy: I can’t. I can only go on the recent history. Had you read my earlier post you would see that I have high hopes for the ACC (if not realized this year, then perhaps next). Today/tonight, UNC fans have told me that they are ready to rock. VTech is always competitive if not over ranked, but on any given day can play with the best, depending on the day lol. Last year, Miami was a young talented team struggling for some consistency. Have they found it? I neither know nor care as long as they beat Ohio State lol. But seriously, they played some weeks like the top team in the nation and other weeks like they couldn’t beat a Jr High team. We’ll see how they do. FSU has a ton of talent as well and we will see if they are for real when they go out of conference and play Oklahoma (my second favorite team). I really think FSU will thump OU but again, we will have to see. They were inconsistent last year. I have really seen nothing to suggest that Ga Tech will suck so now I’m talkin g three good teams in the ACC, maybe even top tier teams. UNC posters here have served notice that THEY are ready to rock. If so, then 4 good teams in the ACC makes them viable. We have to see how it all shakes out. I haven’t mentioned BC because to be honest, I haven’t read or seen anything about BC this year.

In short (while being long lol0 I HOPE the ACC is full of fire works. I’m kind of tired of the SEC being the top conference in football. After a few years, it breeds complacency. Given what I have seen and read so far though, I think the ACC is the only conference that might be able to challenge the current SEC dominance.

Of course Ohio State is once again the top mediocre team in a weak sister conference so if they win out, they will get the “chance” to play in the BCS Championship. As I’m looking at it now, they could possibly win against anyone other than an SEC team. Or maybe a strong, undefeated ACC team. I think I would give kudo’s to an undefeated ACC team whereas I don’t think that other than Alabama that any SEC team has a chance of going undefeated. I HOPE the Dawgs do, bit I can’t see that happening. I think we will see Ohio State laying some undefeated team from a weak sister conference in the championship game.

I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

I hope UNC shuts everybody up. They return 10 of 11 starters on offense and 9 of 11 on defense. They should be loaded. And for anybody who says they have one nothing in the ACC so they cannot be ranked ahead of Georgia Tech or Virginia Tech, I think that is a bunch of bs. I am not necessarily saying that UNC is the best team in the ACC but I do believe that they are stacked and that the offense will be much improved.

UNC lost 5 games last year, but 3 of them were 3 points or less. Georgia Tech by 17 and Virginia by 13 were the others. The problems were on offense: rushing – 3.6 yds. per attempt, passing – 6.2 yds. per attempt.

T.J. Yates put up the following numbers: 214/355, 60.3%, 2,136 yds.,14 TD, 15 INT, 6.0 yds/Att, Passer Rating of 115.4. Pass protection was a problem, as Yates had -66 yds. rushing. LT Carl Gaskins returns from missing the season last year, and he will protect Yates’ back side.

GT gas handled UNC, VT, Clemson fine the last two years

I assume you mean “has handled”…you won last year and it was UNC’s worst game…don’t expect it to happen that way again…also, UNC won the previous year 24-7 (or 21-7 whatever it was) and GT didn’t even score until late in the 4th quarter.

We will take care of that OFF this year, can’t wait.

UNC has beaten Miami 3 straight, and won at VT last year. Tony is wrong though…the Heels will finish in the Top 10 now that some of our top OL talent is healthy and experienced.

Can’t wait to fly from RDU to ATL in a few weeks to watch the season start in the GA Dome.
