Breaking down the quarterbacks: SEC West

Yesterday we rated the quarterbacks in the SEC East. Today let’s look at the SEC West, where the landscape has changed a little in the past 72 hours.

Remember that these rankings do not have anything to do with a player’s NFL potential. This is strictly about the players’ ability—or potential—at the college level.

If you disagree, and I’m sure many of you will, please give me your rankings and why. Here we go:

1. Ryan Mallett, Arkansas:  Look at Mallett’s numbers from last season, when he completed “only” 55.83 percent of his passes, and try to project them should he get into the 60 percent area, which I think he will this season. He threw for 3,640 yards. Tim Tebow was a distant second in the SEC at 2,895.  His touchdown (30) to interception (7) ratio was 4.28. Only Tebow (4.2) and Alabama’s Greg McElroy (4.25) were even close to that. He was seventh nationally in passing efficiency. Only one other SEC quarterback, Tebow at No. 1, was in the Top 10. The point is that last year was Mallett’s first in Bobby Petrino’s offense and he was able to put up those numbers. He is only going to get better. The only question I have is whether or not there will be any lingering effects from offseason foot surgery. I think Mallett can get into the Heisman Trophy race if he plays well in back-to-back games at Georgia (Sept. 18) and at home against Alabama (Sept. 25).

2. Greg McElroy, Alabama: I’m a big believer that great quarterbacks are not defined by what they do, but rather what they DON’T do. For Alabama’s national championship team of 2009, the senior from Texas was the perfect quarterback. While the offense was leaning on running back Mark Ingram, who went on to win the Heisman Trophy, McElroy was the model of efficiency. He completed 60.9 percent of his passes for 2,508 yards, 17 touchdowns and only four interceptions. His interception percentage of 1.23 (4 interceptions in 325 pass attempts) was the lowest in school history and the second lowest in SEC history (in 1995 Peyton Manning had only four interceptions in 380 passing attempts, 1.05 percent).

But what impressed me the most about McElroy is when he hit a lull in the middle of the season he just kept playing through the tough times and then finished strong. There is a reason that, dating back to his senior year in high school, he is 30-0 as a starting quarterback.

3. Jeremiah Masoli, Nathan Stanley, Ole Miss: Before Masoli becomes the starting quarterback at Ole Miss he has to first win the job from Nathan Stanley, who had it coming out of spring practice. But based on the numbers he put up last season at Oregon, you’d have to give Masoli a real shot at being the starter by the time the Rebels play their SEC opener against Vanderbilt on Sept. 18.

Masoli had 386 yards of total offense (222 passing, 164 rushing) in a 44-10 destruction of USC. He had 389 yards of total offense against Stanford and 345 yards against Arizona. Yeah, he was doing it against Pac-10 defenses but still, the guy can make plays. Let’s just say that Ole Miss thought it might have to put the “Wild Rebel” formation in mothballs because Dexter McCluster was gone. Nope. I think we’ll see a lot of that shotgun formation with Masoli.

4. Cameron Newton, Auburn:  The former Florida quarterback returns to the SEC after a stint at Blinn Junior College where he won a national championship and posted  3,488 yards of total offense and 38 touchdowns (22 pass, 16 run) in 2009. Newton is just a splendid athlete and has all of the physical tools to add yet another dimension to Gus Malzahn’s offense. Newton is surrounded by playmakers at running back, wide receiver and has a veteran offensive line in front of him. Now opposing defenses, which could ignore a running threat of 2009 quarterback Chris Todd, will have to watch Newton every time he carries the ball with his 6-6, 247-pound frame. The only question I have is whether or not Newton can quickly adjust to the speed of SEC defenses. I’m betting he will.

 5. Chris Relf, Tyler Russell, Mississippi State: Relf deserved the job coming out of spring practice because of the way he played at the end of last season, when he had 131 yards rushing in a big 41-24 win over Ole Miss. Relf was the better quarterback in the spring.

But at the end of last season I starting hearing that the best quarterback in camp was the guy they were redshirting, freshman Tyler Russell (6-5, 225). Both quarterbacks are going to play and when Russell comes off the bench the defensive coordinators are going to squirm in their seats a little. Dan Mullen was 5-7 in his first season in Starkville and there is no doubt that he is going to miss RB Anthony Dixon, who led the SEC in rushing per game (126.5)in 2009.  He will need both quarterbacks because after the opener with Memphis, the Bulldogs play Auburn, LSU, and Georgia in consecutive weeks. Then there is a non-conference game with Houston followed by a trip to Florida.

6. Jordan Jefferson, Jarrett Lee, LSU: I had a chance to meet Jefferson during SEC Media Days and was impressed by his poise. There is a lot of pressure on this kid to play well in 2010. If not, the heat could get turned up on a lot of people in Baton Rouge. We forget that Jefferson was just a sophomore in 2009 and, at 19 years, 12 days, was the second youngest quarterback to ever start a season opener at LSU (Y.A. Tittle was 25 days short of his 19th birthday when he started for LSU in 1944). Jefferson’s numbers really weren’t that bad. He completed 61.5 percent of his passes for 2,166 yards and had 17 touchdown passes against seven interceptions. But LSU simply had no running game to take the pressure off Jefferson. Lee will always be remembered for a brutal 2008 season when he threw 16 interceptions including six that were returned for touchdowns. I just get the feeling that Lee is not done playing yet. At some point this season he is going to get another chance.

Dawg Bone – you don’t really follow college football do you (just UGA)? Auburn’s record down the stretch last year was poor – but they’ve got one of the top offensive minds in the country and they finished pretty well under the 1st year coach. Add to that a top 5 recruiting class and they’re on their way. Course you don’t know about anything that’s not in Athens.

So Prof, you base your thinking on theory and not facts. They stunk down the stretch with that great offensive mind of a coach, struggled to win a bowl game against Northwestern and your geeked up on a recruiting class? Typical auburn delusion. Mallet appears to have the QB tools required but will he have a team behind him that can play for and win the division..? I know that in itself isn’t the criteria for Mr. CFB’s QB rankings but it will play out going into the Dome. Mallet can be a difference maker but the same was said for Snead last year… McElroy was blessed to have a great supporting cast surrounding him in 2009. For now the only question is will all Alabama’s 2010 replacement players help carry the load and do their jobs, giving McElroy the opportunity to play once again for the SEC Championship. IMHO, McElroy probably won’t make Garcia type mistakes as he did in the LSU game last year…Newton is getting attention. May be a perfect fit for Cheesestick’s O. I’ll help sing his praises if he can make good on his expectations…Masoli comes from a Ducky background that knows offense and how to move a ball forward. His main drawback could be from a coaching standpoint that may play too conservative compared to Oregon’s all out offensive attack. Again, we’ll see…The rest of the SEC West QBing bunch, good luck.

Well, here we go again….the media loves mallet….and masoli. Both put up stats and have stories that the espn zombies will read. Someone has to take up the Tebow vacuum.

As usual…..let’s go for the stats and stories instead of the substance. Let’s remember that these were the same folks who ranked UGA pretty much an undisputed #1 at the start of the season a few years back, when they were holding their team together with duct tape and bailing wire. Why was UGA #1…..Stafford and Moreno….ooh….aah……wow……all style, no substance….any championships there? naah…..

give me a lunchpail QB who does his job, keeps the mistakes to a minium, stays out of jail, and I’ll take your gunslinger with the big stats to the woodshed everytime.

But, that doesn’t sell newspapers or generate clicks or gets the ratings up………

Until Mallet leads Arkansas to a MNC, he aint above the bammer boy. Period.

DawgBone,

There’s never any “proof” of programs rising or falling in college football (see UGA’s 2008 preseason ranking). However, intuitively-

Auburn finished with a winning record and bowl victory in the first year under Chizik

Auburn ranked very highly in almost every single offensive category, despite being dreadful in 2008 and anemic the 2 years prior to that.

Auburn’s depth on defense was incredibly thin, and we have to hope that a top-5 recruiting class will play a role in fixing that.

Unlike UGA, Auburn has something to look forward to. Any UGA fan that really thinks the future is bright with the current uncertainty and direction of the program is delusional. Look for a new coaching staff within 2 years, and you’ll only be wishing you could turn things around as quickly as Auburn seems to be doing.

Flo-Ri-Duh!

There’s Mallett and then McElroy and then far behind all the rest. Masolli is in a new conference, in a new system, hasn’t practiced withthe team and will only be there one year and hasn’t played in the SEC and he has a criminal record. Nutt should have passed on him.

Tony,

I find it somewhat amazing that you have Jefferson dead last in the West, despite your acknowledging his age, lack of a running game, and that his numbers weren’t that bad. I figured with a full year of starting under his belt and a beefed up OL, he might trend upward. Hell I might even “conclude that he is not that far away from being a decent and productive SEC quarterback.”

I don’t have a criminal record, but I have not had steady employment for over a year. Guess if your a great athlete, then your criminal background does not matter. Two QB’s in the SEC West were arrested for stealing at their previous school. Did Masoli pay his way onto the Ole Miss campus with the money from the items he stole. How do we support giving a scholarship to Newton after he lost his at UF.
The NCAA should say you get one scholarship. If you want to transfer or get released due to academic or criminal reasons, then you have to pay your own way.

My list:

1. McElroy – if you want to be the king, you have to beat the king. He’s the reigning BCS winning quarterback this year, so he’s at the top until someone knocks him off.

2. Jefferson – much more relevant playing time than the others in the field

3. Mallett – the press keeps telling me he’s good, so he must be. Maybe some day I’ll actually see all of this goodness.

4. Newton – a lot of success at the JUCO level, which may or may not translate in the SEC

5. Masoli – A lot of experience at this level in a different system and a different conference. It will be difficult for his teammates to think of him as anything other than a mercenary who is just out for himself

6. Reif – experience is good; experience in losing not so much.

I say seems because I am NOT delusional. I said that the few signs that mean anything are that Auburn has reason to be excited. UGA on the other while, has been in a steady decline since 2005 (with the exception of the second half of 2007). Never has a team squandered so much recruiting advantages, talent, and matchups than Georgia in recent years. If you can honestly tell me that your coaching staff and program have any promise in the near future, then you are the only person here who is being unreasonable.

Mallet is the best QB in the division and it isn’t close although I’m very happy with McElroy as he is a perfect fit for our offense and what we do. This is about an individual player and not how great their team is. 30 TDs and 7 Ints in his first season in the SEC playing for a mid level rebuilding program is impressive.

Masoli may be a fit to run the wild whatever but he will be playing for one of the worst qb coaches, Nutt not the puppet Rader, in all of college football. I think you will see Rose Bowl Masoli stats more often than his SC stats from last season.

UGAY in the Papa Johns Bowl –Thats why Georgia has beaten GT eight out of 9, right?? I believe your so called ” tough ACC” gets mopped up by the SEC big boys every year. I believe on the same weekend last year UGA whipped GT, South Carolina whipped Clemson. UGA and USC were far from the best we had in the SEC but they were still able to whip the best the ACC had to offer. You can’t pull facts from anywhere to back up your dumba** statements.

We have lost only two of our last twenty nine games! Our offense is going to be much better. Consider this, the defending Heisman trophy winner is the second best running back on our team. The QB that is 30 and 0 is the second best QB on our team. As I have told you folks many times in the past dont hate the player hate the game!! RTR

Bottom line, Mallett is #1 in the west. McElroy won the national championship..but he did that behind Mark Ingram and a great GREAT defense. Jefferson….well..don’t you think a great QB would know that with one second left..you CAN’T spike the ball to stop the clock. (Still laughing about that one). Masoli is new to the SEC..he may be able to run Wildcat or Wild Rebel or whatever they call it..but he is going to get stroked in the SEC. Anyone past those aren’t even worth noting.

hey Aubies….are you a bird or a cat….make up your friggin mind.

and please tell me how the weak LSU team with the last ranked QB in the division simply annihilated the powerful aubie, whatever you are…31-10, and oh btw, allbarn scored on the last play of the game on 4th down to get to 10 points…..and you think a new qb and some new freshman (you fail to notice that LSU even recruited a higher ranked class than Allbarn again) are going to make up basically a 28 point difference.
your team is so weak up front that our weak team last year murdered you…..and believe me LSU is a much bigger, stronger, and better football team than last year…….but yet you idiots think you are the only team that improves. Even your home team and cheating refs will save you this year….LSU will crush you for the 4th time in a row.

At QB there is individual statistics and then there is leadership. When you rank QBs winning is the real measurement. I’ll take McElroy over the rest. Bama also has the best backup in AJ. He’s probably better that most other starting QBs in the SEC. RTR

Dunwoody, Obviously you have never seen Tyler Wilson at Arkansas play. He is just as good as Mallett and almost won the starting job from him before the season last year. As for McElroy…tossing it up and Julio Jones coming down with it does not make a good QB. It makes for a good wide reciever.

When Mallett shows to me he is worthy of being #1 in anything other than embarrising himself on national TV ,with Erin Andrews no less, then maybe I will acknowledge him as a QB top notch not so much. Masoli is in the SEC and with Ole Miss who is going to help him since they have not recruited so well over the last do not know how many years. McElroy could not do anything in and of himself last year if not for Ingram and Richardson they would not have been in the SEC CG let alone the BCS NCG. Cam Newton, who is that? have not seen or heard from him in the SEC! Relf same here who is he and where did he come from? just another name like all the rest on this list to keep from putting Jordon Jefferson at the top of the list.
By the time tis year is over there will be no mistake who belongs at the top of that list. Not only do you have to have the make-up of a QB you need a supporting cast in which there is no one else in the Conference that has the supporting cast LSU has. It will all come together this year and yall are going to say, I did not see that coming! WOW!

But this year he is a year older, has experience under his belt and LSU isn’t even going to come close to beating Arkansas this year.

I am not going to call out anyone on this board that has NOT won anything over the last 6 or 7 years. When you do then you can claim to be in the league with the best teams in our league. LSU and Fla the only 2 schools with 2 BCS NC’s and Bama with 1. Loosers have only one thing to cling to to have any hope and that is statistics, statistics are for loosers because they do not have any trophies to show that they played a season and won, the real winners do.

Now for all this talk about LSU only having talent just gives yall something else to talk about besides all the BS that is coming out of the schools that can not recruite top notch talent they sit back and waite for the bad to mess up enough so they can take them in and think they finaly have a player that they can win a game or two for them. In order to have great talent you have to have a Coach that can bring them in to the school in order to have them play for you. At least LSU is not or have not had to go and pick up another team’s castoff’s in order to have a team to compete with and I am not saying competing for a title of any sort but just be able to field a team to play with.

It is easy to read about individuals in the paper or on TV by the media, but you do not know Miles or even know what is happening at LSU. There is not a Coach that does not make mistakes they all do the problem is when they fail to recognize the mistake was made then do nothing to correct it. All your comments about Miles was about one thing that happenedin the game that was Nationally televized so yall are jumping on the media’s band wagon and not even looking at what took place the following week against Arky where that same situation came up again and it was taken care of then LSU won that game because he did what was neccessary to correct the problem. Now because of that one mistake you are knocking a complete team for what took place that was not the players fault all they did was follow what their Coach said do. That is what they are supposed to do, but because of that one mistake that 19 year old kid has to take crap from yall and that is not fair.

All I can say it is taken care of and the only thing that will matter is the final score and it will not even be close. JJ has a full stable of RB’s to carry the ball and a full stable of WR’s to catch the balls that are thrown to them and an OL that is bigger, stronger and quicker to protect him with and to open up holes. The Defense will be bigger, stronger, quicker and faster to do what it takes to give the ball back to the offense.

We Are LSU! I Say! Go LSU! Go Togers!

Gotta hope the Ark D shows up, though. McElroy at no. 2 is understandable too. He just led an undefeated team to the national title. Duh. Ole Miss must need help at QB to go after Masoli. That move just puts an exclamation point on the type of coach Nutt is. All these dawg fans ripping Auburn and Newton are doing so based upon what’s happened on the field the last 4 years. However, this kid can play and with the O line as good, if not better, than uga’s in the SEC as well as playmakers like Adams and Fannin, they could surprise.

Casey Mc2, the clock management problems of Les Miles didn’t start with the Ole MIss debacle last year. In 2007 he lost track of time when he only needed to kick a field goal to win but was bailed out when his QB completed a touchdown pass to beat Auburn with 1 second left on the clock. In 2008 against Alabama with under a minute to play, and Alabama in position to kick a game winning field goal, Miles managed to burn 2 timeouts to stop the clock once. First he called a timeout, then when play was about to resume he unsuccessfully challenged the previous play, costing him a second timeout.

I hope Les Miles stays at LSU for a long time even though he’s a good recruiter. I am reminded of a quote from Bobby Knight after his team came back from a large deficit to beat LSU in the 1987 NCAA tournament. “I was worried about losing until I looked down the floor and saw Dale Brown. Then I knew we had a chance.”

Sure he is great and has big numbers, but so did that big kid at Kentucky several years back. Big numbers don’t always equate to numerous victories. The kid’s no Payton Manning. McElroy plays on an incredible team, and he is a smart player. I would have to put him at the #1 slot and Mallet at #2. When Mallet has some championships under his belt, I will concede that.

JP wilson kept his jb with the Falcons because he was cheap and UGA’s DJ Shockley sucked and got to expensive. Payton is the GREATEST SEC QB and he couldn’t win a MNC at UT. You make valid points, yet they lack substance. However, we have had our share of great College QBs in the SEC. Who are the great NFL QBs and where did they go to school? There are so few of them that are actually cut out for that job. An NFL QB is just a different animal, and being a great college QB is not necessarily a pre-requisite. I don’t think it is valid at all to try to discredit Manning because he didn’t get an NC at UT. Second question for you: How many pro successful pro QBs played on an NC winning college team?

Actually DP I was there and that was Matt Flynn’s fault. The play was signaled in with plenty of time to throw that pass and have time left for a fg. There are only 44 Superbowl games and there are many multi Superbowl winners. That makes MNC winning QB odds very small. The SEC says they are the end all to be all, but QB is not the position SEC is the best at. The Mannings are the best to ever play QB in the SEC and go pro. I never said Peyton was not good. I’m very surprised with Jefferson’s decent stats that you have him behind 3 QBs that haven’t even started. I could see Masoli being ranked ahead of him but I’m not sold on him just yet. It will be different him playing against SEC defenses and the pounding he will get week in and week out. Jefferson needs to be more consistant and not hold the ball so much. Of course poor line play also led to his problems so it’s not all his fault.

I still think that was a bad move on Nutt’s part to take Masoli. I would be furious if Miles had done so.

TampaGator,

Bama is the team to beat but I would be surprised if they go undefeated. Yes they have done so the last 2 regular seasons which is a remarkable run. I just think with the strength of the SEC West and since they pick up the Gators, it will be tough. If anyone does go unbeaten it will be them as I don’t think anyone else has a chance.

32 days until LSU faces UNC. 30 days until USCe faces S. Miss on the Thursday night opener.

CaseyMc is in no way a representative of the education that is provided at Louisiana State University. Anyone that can not spell “lose”, “finally”, or “recruit” is just down right irritating. On the other hand, LSU is on the upswing with a quarterback that had no offensive line or running game, yet still managed to finish the season at the capital one bowl, 3rd in the SEC, and with mediocre to good stats. Not only that, we have the best cornerback in the country, great DBS, great WRs, a better OLine and running game, and faster D line. Im not going to go ahead and say that we will win the SEC, but to say we will finish 4th in the west after we’ve improved, a year removed from a team that finished 3rd in the SEC, well I’d have to say you’re f’in crazy.

OSU, PSU, Michigan, Illinois, MSU, Minnesota, Iowa and (coming soon) Nebraska can all claim MNC’s

TIGROS,
I’d be surprised if LSU isn’t much better than last year. With Jefferson having a full year under his belt and an improved 0-line, they should be more dangerous. If not, then Miles may have worn out his welcome. Too much talent over there not to be winning more games than they have the last couple of years.

Ryan Mallett is the best NFL ready QB in the SEC west or east. McElroy at Alabama is the best game
manager in the SEC just like Jay Barker from the 92 NC’s. If you want to talk about the best defense
of all time in the SEC the 92 team from Alabama was hands down the very best I have ever watched
in person or on TV!! RTR

McElroy or Mallet??? Look at last years game. McElroy passed for 425; Mallet passed for 254. Granted this says a lot about the respective defenses, but if its a toss up…

Good call Paul. If we measure the toughness of a conference by the number of teams with NCs, then the SEC and Big 10 would be the two best.

jumbeuxtiger, I still put that clock problem against Auburn on Miles. You can’t cut it close in that situation and you can’t leave it up to the QB even if he is a senior. When Miles saw that Flynn was dawdling around he could have called timeout to the sideline official who would have been standing right in front of him. It was the same issue with Mack Brown when Colt McCoy (also a senior) nearly let the clock run out in the Big 12 championship game against Nebraska. When you get under 10 seconds and the ball hasn’t been snapped, the head coach has to be watching the clock and call timeout.

The 2007 LSU championship team was loaded. No way they should have lost to Kentucky and Arkansas and they were a play away from losing to Auburn, a 4 loss Florida team, and a 6 loss Alabama team. And it took one of the biggest choke jobs in college football history, Rich Rod and West Virginia falling on their faces and losing to a bad Pitt team, for LSU to get a chance to play for the BCS championship after losing the last regular season game to Arkansas. That team was talented enough to go 14-0.

If there’s such a thing as doing a lousy coaching job while your team wins a national championship, Les Miles pulled it off in 2007. But Miles can recruit.

I’d guess if LSU doesn’t play closer to their talent level this year and Miles is fired that the top 2 candidates to replace him would be former LSU defensive coordinators Will Muschamp and Bo Pellini.

PAUL RUD why would Saban go to LSU? I crapy state with some good food until the seafood is covered in oil. Paul Grow a pair. Saban ain’t going to s state with more dumb black players than he already gets at Bama. Bama Ha history and LSU in well a JOKE that fights with UGA nad Tenn for the 3rd best team in the SEC most years.

Bama fans enjoy the last two years. It won’t continue. And by the way, stop politicing for your game manager to be the top qb in the west. “Great game manager” ( he manages to call the play & either hand it off or dump it off.) No doubt Mallet. should prove to be the best QB in the West. Unless Murray or Brantley have stellar years, Mallett will be the best in the SEC. If Murray or Brantley are as good as their fans are planning on, one of them will overtake Mallet.

Looking at the SEC, I can’t believe pundits are calling it a down year. Just because of new QBs I suppose, but it looks stronger relative to last year to me, especially the West. Florida will still be good, Georgia and SC are on up cycles. Same for Bama, Arkansas and Auburn. LSU could surprise. I don’t see Bama or Florida (or anyone else) going unbeaten because of the strength of the conference, and the SEC NC streak of 4 will probably end too.

Mallet has the potential to be an All- American. Arkansas will have a great offense. Defense?? Alabama will be tough. Anyone know if Favre can play first base. He gives 100%. What does the current bench warmer give? Oh Ya double plays. Bravos cut your financial losses, trade or wavier him, bring up Freeman.

You people in the SEC make me sick. Get a clue, there is good football being played outside of your holy land. I can’t wait to go into Tennessee and beat the hell out of them.

Next year, against LSU in Dallas to open the year I cant wait to beat the hell out of the Tigers.

Get a grip SEC, you are not the only ones who can throw a spiral on the football.

Alabama WILL win the west again, Mallett is the best QB, but has NO help and that’s the difference between Alabama and the rest of the west. Alabama has the talent spread around to be strong again this year. Florida/Alabama round three and Bama wins two straight SEC championships.
