Saying goodbye to my friend, Haywood Harris

Cleaning out the notebook from the SEC Meetings from Destin:

 1. We lost Haywood Harris yesterday: First of all, Haywood was my friend and he died yesterday in Knoxville at the age of 80. Secondly, he had been a constant and steadying  voice in the sports information department at Tennessee since he was hired in 1961. In fact, Haywood was the last UT employee hired by General Robert Neyland before Neyland passed away in 1962.

Whenever Haywood found out that I was coming to Knoxville, he would always call and ask me to come by his office. He retired in 2000 but kept an office to work part time as the resident historian for Tennessee athletics. We would catch up on what was going on around the SEC and he would ask me to tape a segment for radio show “The Locker Room” which ran on Tennessee game days for 49 consecutive seasons.

Haywood was funny. He was smart. But he never told you how smart he was. He didn’t have to.

Haywood was one of those people didn’t just work for his alma mater. He WAS Tennessee. We’re going to miss him—a lot.

2. When it comes to Mark Richt, some of you out there need a reality check: Kudos to the AJC’s Tim Tucker for going right to the source—President Michael Adams and AD Damon Evans—and putting to rest this ridiculous notion that Richt is even in the same universe as a coaching hot seat. Tim had to ask the question because that is what good reporters do.

I’ve tried to be politically correct on this issue and realize there are passions at work here. So let me just put it in language that is a little more to the point: If you think that Richt, who has won 90 games in nine years in the toughest college football environment in the world, is on some kind of hot seat then you are living in an alternative universe that is completely divorced from reality.

Yes, Georgia had a disappointing season in 2009. Changes were made. Very soon it will be time to play another season. Then Richt will evaluate the program again and Richt will be evaluated again. Period. End of discussion.

3. Dooley will be his own man, and that’s good for Tennessee: New Tennessee coach Derek Dooley made one thing clear when he met with the media in Destin. He’s not Lane Kiffin. But at the same time he’s not about to slam the coach who had a cup of coffee (not decaf)  before he went scurrying back to Southern Cal. But Dooley recognized his style is different than Kiffin’s.  That fact, in the long run, will be good for Tennessee.

Someone asked Dooley is he purposely was trying to be the anti-Kiffin. The short answer is no. The former lawyer, who was tutored by his Hall of Fame father (Vince) and Nick Saban, is very comfortable with who he is.

“I know (my style) was quite a bit different from my predecessor,” said Dooley. “I wasn’t trying to make headlines. Our program needed somebody to get their arms around it and our players needed somebody to get their arms around them.

“Because at the end of the day a headline in February is not going to help you win games. It’s just not my style.”

4. Now coaching for the Lake Burton Bears, Nick Saban: The coach of the 2009 national champions insisted this week that Alabama is going to be his last coaching stop. The Crimson Tide went 12-0 during the regular season in 2008, went 14-0 in 2009, and will be preseason No. 1 in most polls when the 2010 season begins.

There has always been speculation that Saban will someday return to the NFL, where he had a disappointing two years as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins. But in my last few meetings with Saban he seems very comfortable in the lifestyle he has in Tuscaloosa. It doesn’t hurt that his getaway home in Lake Burton is not that far away.

“It is always a difficult decision to leave any place and it is a decision I am never going to make again,” said Saban. “I am where I am. If they get a football team at Lake Burton, I might go there. Otherwise I am where I am.”

I know I’m a college guy and I look at the world through those glasses. But what pro job—money aside—can match what you have at Alabama or Texas? Just asking.

5. Ryan Mallett started throwing his week: Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino said that his quarterback Ryan Mallet will start throwing this week after his recovery from off-season foot surgery. That surgery kept him from participating in spring practice drills.

Mallett, a rising junior, threw for 3,624 yards and 30 touchdowns last season, his first in Petrino’s offensive system. He is expected to have a monster season in 2010 and put the Hogs into contention in the SEC West. They get Alabama early (Sept 25) in Fayetteville.

Petrino said that Mallett has two issues to deal with as he gets ready for this season.

No. 1: Mallett’s throwing mechanics have to stay solid. “He has to make sure of his footwork. Sometimes his feet are not under him properly, which makes the ball tend to sail,” Petrino said.

No. 2: Mallett has to learn to trust his offensive line. “He has to get to the point where he trusts our protection 100 percent of the time. At times last year we weren’t protecting him well enough and when that happens you lose your downfield vision,” Petrino said.

My CBS colleague Gary Danielson recently told me that he believes that Mallett could be the single biggest impact player in the SEC this fall. In other words, Mallett could be good enough to lift his entire team and put them in a position to win the SEC West.

PROGRAMMING NOTE: Our “Talkin’ Football” show on CSS has been picked up for the entire summer. Starting tonight a new show will air every Thursday night at 6 p.m.  until the start of the season. Bob Neal will be back to lead the discussion with Mark Schlabach, Brady Ackerman and yours truly. Please check us out.

1. My condolences to the Harris and UT families.
2. I would have been completely shocked if Evans and Adams DIDN’T voice complete support of Mark Richt at this point, Turning up the heat on a seat is not done in public.
3. Friends who worked with Dooley in his lawyer days say he is very thorough and analytical. Not something that could be said of his UT predecessor.
4. Honestly, why would Saban want to go anywhere else? As an Auburn graduate, I was trained to hate all things University of Alabama related, but let’s get real. Any other job in college would be a lateral move at best.
5. I see Mallett’s talent, but haven’t seen him deliver up to his potential yet. We’ll see how this year goes.

Richt isn’t on the hot seat…yet. Another performance like last year and he will be. Hopefully, that’s not the case.

I agree that Saban will most likely retire at Bama. He tried the pro game and realized it wasn’t for him. The only question is when will he retire. Making that kind of money tends to keep you working longer. He may not need it, but it sure is hard to walk away from.

Dooley is the opposite of Kiffin. No telling what kind of product he will be able to put on the field, but he’s an upgrade over Lame. Hell, who wouldn’t be?

Mallet will most likely put up some good numbers but Arkansas will NOT win the west. I think it will come down to Bama or Auburn. Arkansas has no defense. You have to have solid defensive play to win consistently in the SEC.

Tony, no need to lecture everybody on the nonsense about Mark Richt ever being on the hot seat. Talk to your “good friend” Paul Finebaum and other yellow journalists who make a living writing and yapping about such nonsense. Why would you have somebody with standards as low as Finebaum’s on your TV show? The “mainstream” press should shut out the worst of the talk radio/blogger crowd who says and writes stuff just to get a reaction (come to think of it, some AJC sports columnists have gone in that direction at times, unfortunately).

And I’m an Alabama alumn/fan by the way. Finebaum is currently an Alabama cheerleader but I’ve seen him change his spots plenty of times over the years.

With regard to Saban, I’ve always felt Alabama would be his last job. If you look at his history, all his moves up through LSU were normal moves up the coaching ladder; they weren’t Larry Brown style job hopping because he became restless and wore out his welcome. He then made the move to the NFL and like a lot of college coaches realized it was a mistake. The Alabama job was open so he was able to rectify the mistake. At Alabama he will be paid among the top few college coaches, the fan base is passionate, football is the biggest thing in the state and he is able to recruit against anybody in the country and win championships. By this fall there will be a statue of Saban outside Bryant-Denny along with the other coaches who have won national championships at Alabama. As Tony says, where would he go to get a better deal and have a better chance of winning? He has rebuilt the Alabama program and the team is virtually entirely players he recruited. He has never been in a position as he is now where he can just reload every year. Why would he take on another rebuilding job as he approaches 60 years of age?

Richt is the best coach UGA has ever had. Like the elder Dooley, he will eventually recruit a once-in-a-generation athlete and win a NC. Then all of the current hot seat talk will seem so silly.

Saban will coach at Bama for another five to seven years before retiring with a least one more NC and two more SECCs. He will then be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Arkansas will finish third in the West.

There really are a lot of smart head football coaches around the land who are choosing Georgia as a second home. I am a SC alum it is my hope when Spurrier retires we get a shot at Mark Richt. I really can’t understand the amount of criticism Richt gets from some of you after doing so much in my view. I think Mark Richt is probably the classiest coach in the SEC and yes one of the best. Richt will be at the top of my wish list for SC when Spurrier retires. “Richt hot-seaters = Obama “birthers”?

Both equally wrong yes, but I would have to say that the birthers are considerably dumber. Its hard to be dumb enough to believe that 2 birth announcements in 2 seperate papers in Hawaii the day after the President was born don’t resolve the issue conclusively. I mean you really have to focus on DUMB to ignore that.

The “hot seaters” on the other hand are betting that 2010 will be like 2009. While that won’t happen, a rational argument could be made that it could happen and whether I agree with it or not an sub-par year (less than 9 wins) would likely put CMR in a position where he is fighting for his job in 2011. Less than 7 wins and the ship might sink in 2010. I think that the hot-seaters think that is a real possibility. If you think UGA will lose to: USC, UF, Auburn, Arky, & Tech and perhaps drop one or two more vs. UK, UT, Miss St., & Colo. then they aren’t far off. The problem is that none of that will happen. We will win the East with no worse than a 6-2 conference record. The fact is that we were one bad officiating call vs. LSU and a couple of brain farts vs. UK from a 10 win season last year and we were in no sense a good football team. The 2010 team is much, much better. Just from a talent perspective there is only one team on the schedule that matches up: UF. This should mean that it would take a great deal of effort to lose any more than three games and 10-3 (perhaps 9-4 if you lose the bowl game) doesn’t get CMR fired. In fact, I wouldn’t think that the seat would even get warm if that happens.

Barring a disasterous season, I don’t think Richt is on the “hot” seat this year but watch out if he goes 8-5 again and has to take further measures with his staff (see Mike Bobo). I really think it will come down to 2011 and what happens then. Yes, his overall record is good but the more recent trend is probabably disturbing to the few Dawgs who are not hooked up to a kool-aid I.V. And 9 or 10 win seasons over 9 years doesn’t look nearly as good when your peers in the conference are winning national championships and elevating the national profiles of their programs. Elite is the word today and frankly, Georgia is just not quite there. That’s being honest, whether you like it or not.

1. My condolences for the Harris family. He sounds like he was a fine man.

2. Even if Richt is on the hot seat, and I think he will be if loses to SC, Florida and Tech, Adams and Evans would never admit to such in the offseason. Can you imagine if they did even hint that Richt is? That would be a huge distraction and would have an impact on the team’s performance. That would be dumb thing to do on their part and they are not stupid men.

3. Dooley is in a tough situation and has a chance to turn things around if Vol fans are patient. I would guess that by year 3 fans will be expecting the team to be much improved and winning some of their big games.

4. The Saban rumors will always be there as long as he’s winning. That happens when you win championships. I don’t see him going anywhere else at his age as he has a good thing going in T-town.

A blogger asked how he is with fans. I have met Nick and he’s just not the type to mingle with fans. He likes his own space. That’s not a negative it’s just the way he is.

5. I don’t see the Hogs winning the West unless there is a drastic change in their defense. They will get an early major test against Bama. A win would be huge for their program. It will be a must-watch game.

Good article Tony.

Yesterday he was something like “I wish Auburn played Florida” and he ruined the comments on Tony’s blog with his numerous childish and sometimes downright vulgar comments. Not nearly as dumb as Obama voters.

Excellent fact-driven analysis that the majority of Americans are in fact dumber than people that think that someone had the bright idea of placing false birth announcements in 2 1962 newspapers in Hawaii because they had the forethought that even before the 1964 Voting Rights Act and the 1965 Civil Rights Act that a mixed race infant born in Kenya named Barack Obama could be the president one day if they only created the impression that he was a naturally born citizen. Frankly, I would say that if the majority of Americans were dumber than that, then Sarah Palin can be elected president some day.

If I were banned, how would I be commenting right now? Remember, it was you who accused me of being a name jacker etc..

Patrick Sulley…speaking of someone who loves Sarah Palin (per his Facebook). Anyway, Richt’s seat may be getting warm but it’s not hot. Breaking in a new QB and a new defensive scheme will be considered I think. After that, next year who knows. Also Dooley will need some strong support and commitment from the powers that be to turn Tennessee around. So much damage has been done from an image standpoint. I think this years recruiting class will be a strong early barometer on where that program’s going. Last years class was a lot of Kiffin, plus the recruits who were early enrollees got stuck when they showed up on campus and then tried to reconsider their situation in light of the sudden Kiffin departure. They would have had to sit out a year and the Prez at Tennessee made it very clear that he wasn’t going to release them from their scholarships. Dooley will need some time.

Plus, how many “Auburn” fans do you know that have a current issue with Florida??? Haven’t played since when, 2007? Plus they won the last couple of meetings. So there’s no currnet axe to grind for them. Besides, the “Tigers” got their eyes fixed firmly on that school in Tuscaloosa, you know the one who just won it all, making sure that they don’t get up and just run away from them. Elephants can be deceptively fast, especially on the plains.

Yesterday, on Tony’s blog, I allowed myself to get into it with the person who was making the immature comments who called themselves “I wish Auburn played Florida”. I don’t usually do that but anyway, that person kept stealing peoples names (including mine) and making childish comments and also kept calling people “ma’am”. I guess that was his way of trying to insult you. Anyway, I see that this “Gators are incapable of going undefeated” is doing the exact same thing today esp with the “ma’am” thing. Beast from the East and me,

Beast you are correct. Its Forrest Gump just using a different handle. He likes to switch up handles but the recurring theme is that he is an equal opportunity insulter and is an Auburn fan- hence the insults towards Bama, Florida, and Georgia.

I’m just waiting for him to tell someone they have the intelligence of a carrot which always cracks me up.

I’ve sparred with Forrest before on one of his first few days on the blog and ended up spending half the day trading posts with him. Won’t get sucked into that again. Some of his posts and sparring are pretty funny and he always manages to sucker someone into sparring with him every day but be warned. He does type pretty fast.

Best thing to do is just ignore him if you don’t want to converse. That seems to work a lot with people who get on the blogs just to argue.

As for myself? I’ll just look for the daily rant when he tells someone they have the intelligence of a carrot and crack up about it. Don’t know why but it never gets old when he tells someone that.

1. RIP, Mr. Harris. May a choir of overalls-wearing cherubim welcome you to the Big Stadium with a chorus from “Rocky Top.”

2. Short of another 7-5 season, Mark Richt is not going anywhere in 2010. Nevertheless, 2-8 is going to smart. (The Jacksonville Convention is hereby invoked.)

3. In the absence of Mr. Kiffin, I may even cheer for the Vols 12 out 13 games this season. Derek Dooley is a welcome relief from all of the previously unnecessary noise out of Knoxville. It was painful to watch long-time Vols fans wince and still try to defend the Jerk.

4. Lake Burton Bears, eh? Yeah, and maybe Urban Meyer’s esophagus would be a lot more relaxed in South Bend. Riiiiiiiight. I’m afraid the only way Saban is leaving Tuscaloosa is with a gold watch or in a pine box. Great coach, but, personally, I never trust a man who doesn’t drink.

5. Damn. Hailing from the eastern half of the SEC, I did not realize that Mallett’s numbers were THAT good. If only Petrino had half a defense the Hogs could be contenders.

6. Personally, I think “Gump” is kinda funny. Everyone, try to play nice. It’s only June.

Alot of new talent and I think Urban’s got a new lease on life. Brantley will not be Tebow but he won’t have to be if he utilizes the talent around him. The recruiting class was unreal and I think you are seeing alot of the recruiting on the defensive line in response to what happened against Alabama last year, speaking of Bama. Nice to see you back. I think we’ve done better about managing expectations at Bama since the Shula era. Most Bama folks understand that no one will ever truly dominate the sec again the way bear did or the way Spurrier did in the 90s. I think its okay to have expectations of putting together a few great classes and running off great 2-4 year streaks of dominance like when LSU won 11 games or more for 3 straight years under Miles. USC had a fantastic streak and even then that streak of dominance came to a crashing end last year and was punctuated by Stanford pounding the men of Troy. All programs will ebb and flow and for now we’re riding high but it won’t last forever. Yeah. I think most of us understand that now.

Why do you think the Gators will be very young? I keep hearing this from national media and scratch my head because when you look at the projected starting lineups UF will field 11 seniors, 8 juniors, 3 sophomores, 2 freshmen. 19 out of 24 starting positions fielded of seniors and juniors is not very young. With 17 of those 24 actually being starters in the past either full time or have started multiple games.

One of the things that made the Gators defense so good the past two years was not only the depth of talent, bu the depth of experience. They will not have the interchangeable first and second-string defense as they have for the past two seasons. I’m also concerned about the receiver corps. Without the run option of Tebow, it’s time for a couple of WRs and a TE to step up and start catching Brantley’s deep passes.

Gridiron Gator

June 3rd, 2010

Atlanta Gator…I think most Dawgs desperately want to believe Murray’s gonna be OK but you know what they say about freshmen…the best thing is that they become sophomores. There’s little experience at the most critical position and really no fallback for the Bulldogs, wouldn’t be surprised to see them go real real heavy on the running game. But sooner or later, they’re gonna have to start putting it up and that could well be a problem. I see an 8-4 regular season if they can win all their home games.

Beast from the East

June 3rd, 2010

Atlanta Gator,
I hear mixed opinions. The kid Murray does appear to be capable but some have labeled him as a “gunslinger”. He has arguably the best WR in the country and a pretty good tight end. Their line is supposed to be much improved and should have a good running game. I think they’ll be pretty solid offensively if Murray just doesn’t make too many freshman mistakes.
Our offensive questions are WR and RB. I think we’ll get good QB and o-line play. Need those RB’s & WR’s to step up and we could have a great year.
Gonna be fun to watch!

I think UGA will be 9-3 at worst. Their schedule is much more favorable this year. Losses to UF, Auburn and either USC or Arkansas. If they get past USC and Arkansas they could go 10-2 or 11-1.

Gridiron Gator

June 3rd, 2010
6:14 pm

If I were UGA, I’d definitely run a more short controlled passing game with heavy involvement with the tight ends and backs. I think they’re in trouble if they start trying to sling it all over the ballpark. Those 15 picks by Joe Cox last year could turn into a two year average. Florida has a solid backfield and great distribution as long as Moody can stay healthy and practice good ball security. Demps will be the starter again with his 7.5 ypc but don’t forget Rainey (6.5ypc) can be brought out of the slot to carry a few ala Percy. Gillislee is a potential rising star with size and speed and Mack Brown will be one of those freshmen who need to become sophomores. I think they’re gonna try to protect Andre Debose with very few carries this tear. Look for better distribution among the recievers this year and not the focus on 2 guys like last year….

Even if UGA loses only 1 to 2 games they still have to face a bigger and better opponent in a bowl game. I don’t think UGA can beat a team like Ohio State, TCU, Boise State or Oklahoma. Those teams all have more returning seniors. Yeah UGA’s schedule is favorable but that only drags out the inevitable. Also, if UGA makes it to the Dome in December it means that either Bama, Auburn, or Arkansas will throw down on them. There is no way UGA would beat a Bama team.

Don’t think we’re gonna see that YPC be that high this year. Without the threat of the QB to take off, they’re going to have the linebackers up in the hole more. They key will be the WR play. If they can get loose downfield early and often, that will open up the running game. I suspect the offense will look totally different this year. Kind of like what we saw in 2006.

I live 5 minutes from where Murray played high school and where “must get” James Wilder Jr is going to be a senior. I’ve seen them both up close and personal and feel I have a little insight there. Trust me when I tell you that James Wilder is not your everyday specimen. He is already ripped ala Ronald Powell (if he doesn’t start this year, it won’t be a physical thing) but once he gets into a good weight training program…I’m only dreaming what Mickey could turn him into…does the word “granite” mean anything to you? Yep, just like his old man.

kgator79

Gridiron…

I agree. I think we could potentially see a tougher offense for defenses to stop if the right players step up. Deonte Thompson, Carl Moore and Andre Debose should be as effective WR corp as any others in the SEC if they play to their ability, not to mention Chris Rainey now playing the Percy position should be far more effective than Brandon James playing it last year. The only real question I see with the offense is TE. But if the WRs step up and the RBs continue to do their thing, that shouldnt be a problem.

Remember, he is STILL a freshman. Powell, like Percy was, will probably be a rare exception to that rule. My biggest concern is that DB opposite Janoris. Tim may have been the heart and soul of that team but Joe Haden was it’s biggest loss. Just like ol Fred Weary used to be, he was almost always in the right place and had make up speed when he wasn’t. I don’t think even the coaching staff has a clue who is gonna end up starting there.

Well, just got back. I guess Forrest Gump was a no show. No biggie. I’ll just get back to talkin football.

Liven Loudly,

I’m pretty certain both Urban Meyer and Saban will both match the accomplishment of 4 straight top 10s. Neither has been at their respective schools long enough to do it. Meyer has only been at UF for 5 years so you’re basically asking him to finish top 10 in 4 of only 5 years of having been there. Not easy to do.

Saban was at LSU only 5 years and at Bama only 3 so its impossible for Saban to have 4 straight top 10s at Bama and would have been hard to do at LSU because he inherited an LSU program that had losing seasons in 8 of 11 years prior to his arrival.

However, both UF and Bama have 2 straight top 10 finishes(2 straight top 3s for Florida) and its likely that one or both will finish top 10 both this season and probably next season also.

Tide Rising

June 3rd, 2010

Atlanta Gator,

4 top 5s in 6 seasons. Yep. That is pretty impressive. Saban has two top 6s and we should be able to get another top 10 finish this year provided we don’t drop more than 3 games. Saban also had a stellar top 60 finish in his first season in 07 at Bama.

I’m sick of hearing everyone say that Arkansas will NOT win the west this year because we have NO defense. And then find out that its someone from Auburn that is the moron saying. Listen tigger, Auburn’s defense was terrible last year too…and Arkansas BEAT you by 3 TDs. So if you’re gonna say Auburn has a chance then you better include Arkansas. Here’s how I see the west. LSU and Ole Miss have a weak offense and strong defense. Arkansas and Auburn have strong offenses and weak defenses. Alabama has a strong offense and until proven otherwise, a strong defense. Miss St, in Mullen’s 2nd year, will likely beat on of the top 3 and help decide the western race. My guess is that Auburn beats Bama, Arkansas beats Auburn, Bama beats Arkansas. LSU beats Auburn, Bama beats LSU. Florida beats Bama and LSU. Confused yet? Everyone in the west finishes with at least 2 conference losses except Arkansas, and even though Bama beat Arkansas….Arkansas represents in the SEC CG. And they get that much anticipated rematch with the Gators.
