Will Bama get relief from scheduling problem?

It’s Friday which means the floor is open for discussion on any topic you choose, football or non-football. Here are some random thoughts to get the party started. You input is welcomed:

**–I’m not sure the SEC is going to be able to do a whole lot to give Alabama some relief from a huge scheduling hiccup. In case you missed it, Alabama is not very happy with its SEC football schedule for 2010 and with good reason. Alabama’s last six conference opponents, beginning on Oct. 9 against South Carolina, will all play the Crimson Tide after an open date. How does that happen? Actually it’s easier than you might think.

The SEC office puts together the conference part of the schedule and that process begins with several fixed points. Examples: Tennessee and Florida play the third Saturday in September; Tennessee and Alabama play the third or fourth Saturday in October; Georgia and Florida meet in Jacksonville on either the last Saturday in October or the first in November; Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina have rivalry games that must be played on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

There are a number of principles that go into setting a schedule such as a team should never have to play more than two straight conference games on the road. But the SEC did not have a principle that limited the number of games a team will play after that opponent had an open date. It will in the future and the number will be three.

The fact is at this late date the SEC may be able to move around some non-conference games but those will have a domino effect. It’s just difficult.

Also look for the SEC to discuss using a computer program to formulate their schedules in the future. The ACC does it by taking all of the games and all of the scheduling principles and putting them into a computer. The SEC does not currently use a computer to set its schedule.

**–Who didn’t see this coming? South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier told ESPN.com’s Chris Low this week that he was going to start calling the ball plays again next season. Spurrier, set to begin his sixth season in Columbia, started handing off play calling and other offensive duties to his son, Steve., Jr., and other assistants a couple of years ago. Spurrier told me last year that he thought that he needed to delegate more. “I was sitting in the offensive staff meeting one day and I was drawing up all the plays and the other guys were just watching,” he said. “I thought I needed to take on more of a traditional head coach role.”

But there is nothing traditional about Spurrier and, while he was at Florida (1990-2001) proved to be one of the best play callers in the history of the game. So he should go back to calling the plays. But he should also crack the whip and demand that his offensive line play better and develop a running game. South Carolina gave up 27 sacks last season and was again last in the SEC in rushing. If that part of the team doesn’t get better it won’t matter who’s calling the plays.

**–When I was at Florida two weeks ago offensive coordinator Steve Addazio told me that without Tim Tebow the 2010 offense “would probably look a lot like 2006.” That’s the year that Chris Leak was the senior quarterback in a traditional, drop back passing offense. The wrinkle came when Tebow, a freshman, would enter the game on short yardage situations to pick up the first down. This season John Brantley will fill the Chris Leak role.

“We’ll have to come up with something else on third and short because I sure won’t be running it,” Brantley told me.

Looks like freshman quarterback Trey Burton and tight end Jordan Reed will get those snaps.

In 2006 the two-quarterback system worked pretty well at Florida as the Gators won the national championship.

But how well will it work? Last season Florida was seventh nationally in third down conversion percentage at 49.15 percent.

**–While looking up that stat I noticed that with all of the other offensive superlatives it had last season, Georgia Tech was No. 2 nationally in third down conversion percentage. Georgia Tech had 199 third downs and converted 104 for 52.26 percent. Only BYU was better at 55.62 percent.

**–I also learned that third down conversion percentage might be overrated as a stat. Florida was No. 7 but that was the only SEC team in the top 50. Alabama, the national champion, was 62. The rest of the SEC’s ratings were Ole Miss (51), Auburn (57), Tennessee (59), Georgia (61), Kentucky (67), LSU (71), South Carolina (77) and Vanderbilt (91). Arkansas and Mississippi State tied at 104.

**–I can’t say I’m surprised to read that Nick Stephens, the only quarterback at Tennessee with any real experience, is going to transfer in order to find a place to play in his final year of eligibility. Stephens started six games in 2008 but then could not beat out Jonathan Crompton when head coach Lane Kiffin arrived in 2009. The assumption was that Stephens would be the guy under new head coach Derek Dooley, who retained offensive coordinator Jim Chaney from the previous staff.

But when I visited Knoxville on my spring football tour I talked to some folks who had strong doubts about whether or not Stephens would be Tennessee’s every down quarterback 2010. JUCO transfer Matt Simms and incoming freshman Tyler Bray have looked better in practice and were starting to take more reps with the first team. You would think that a veteran player like Stephens would go through the entire spring practice and then make a decision on his future. He obviously saw the handwriting on the wall.

So Stephens will transfer to a Division I-AA program where he can play immediately and Tennessee continues to deal with the inevitable attrition of the post Lane Kiffin experiment. And it’s probably not over yet.

I wrote a couple of weeks ago that this would probably be a tough season at Tennessee. I haven’t changed my mind about that,

Have a great weekend.

Open dates matter in close, hard-fought games with teams that are physically similar. May bite Bama on another game like the Auburn or UT games of last year. Extra week of planning and rest never hurt anyone, esp. when the other team doesn’t have it.

While in Gainesville, did you get a sense of who the next stars will be now that Tebow and company are gone? We know about Brantley but who might step up? Debose? Jelani Jenkins?

Why Bama probably has so much depth, they could play a pair of split squad games. Say host Miss St with one and go to So Car with another on the same weekend, then have an open date the following week.HARDY, HAR.

Too bad about Nick Stephens. He threw one of the prettiest deep balls I’ve ever seen a college QB throw. Throwing the deep ball and dropping perfectly into a receivers arms 60 yards downfield is an art. Too bad the SEC won’t get to see that. Thanks again Lame.

I just looked through the SEC schedule for next year and it is bizarre. Some teams have a lot of options to put bye weeks before an SEC opponent, some have very few. Here is how the conference schedule shakes out by team in terms of consecutive games against SEC opponents:

Alabama 5-2-1
LSU 2-2-1-1-2
Auburn 1-1-4-1-1
Arkansas 2-4-2
Miss St 3-1-1-3
Ole Miss 1-1-3-3
Florida 5-3
Georgia 3-4-1
Kentucky 6-1-1
South Carolina 1-1-6
Tennessee 1-2-2-3
Vandy 2-6

Based on what Tony wrote, the SEC’s only scheduling constraints appear to be no more than 2 consecutive conference road games and a few traditional games like Alabama-Tennessee and Florida-Georgia that are locked in for certain Saturdays. But then they put together a schedule that has Alabama and Florida playing conference games 5 weeks in a row and Kentucky, South Carolina and Vandy playing 6 in a row while LSU’s conference games are spread through the entire season, never more than 2 SEC games in a row.

The 2 schools that are getting the biggest scheduling breaks from the SEC in 2010 are LSU and Tennessee. Tennessee plays 3 consecutive games at the end as they always do, but when the last two are Kentucky and Vandy that’s not exactly running a gauntlet.

TB,

I don’t think play calling or who’s calling the plays will make any difference at all for the Warrior Chickens……as long as Garcia is the best QB they have. Fall preseason practice 2008….after practice one day when asked about Garcia, Spurrier exclaimed, “He must be the dumbest QB I’ve ever had.”

Enough said…..nothing’s changed.

As for Bama’s schedule whining…..Waaaaa. Already lining up the excuses for not repeating as NC.

Tennysee will need a QB to get the ball to The ‘Rick……maybe Nance will get his chance.

The Gator’s QB will be as good as those around him…..if they play well, he’ll play well…..if they’re inconsistent, he’ll be in trouble. The Gator’s defense will need to be superior or the Gator offense will be under constant pressure. This may be the year for everyone to get the Gators…..

Tony, do a little more research into the SEC scheduling issue. I can’t recall the exact figures, but if you look at 2007 through 2010, I believe Alabama has had 16 SEC games where their opponent was coming off their bye week. The 2nd closest to that total was LSU with 6. That doesn’t just happen by chance. That scumbag Roy Kramer and Doug Dickey left that as part of their legacy. Ironically, Alabama responded by going undefeated the last 2 regular seasons. So the commish can move some games around, or leave them as is, Alabama will still beat that ass this year.

murfdawg

April 9th, 2010

UGA had the same scheduling “situation” a couple of years ago. It is what it is. If you have a good team, it doesn’t matter. If you don’t have a good team, then everything matters. I would take Tony’s comments as journalistic fluff in April. Now, if Bama Stan and Got 12 start talking about the schedule in October, then it will be considered whining.

One more thing Tony. A blind grandma in a wheelchair could call the plays in fla in the 90s and be successful. SOS has called the plays before at USC and was mediocre. Which is what he is Tony…….a mediocre coach. Lou Holtz was better than SOS.

DP

April 9th, 2010

G8R Grad, the fact that the SEC scheduled Florida and Alabama to each play league games on 5 consecutive Saturdays hardly plays to the conspiracy theorists who believe league policy was to ensure they remained undefeated and played in the SEC championship game.

The SEC schedule gave 3 teams the opportunity to take their bye week before Florida – Tennessee (would have to take the bye on Sept 18), Kentucky (would have to take the bye on Sept 25) and Miss. State (would have to take the bye on Oct 9). None of them scheduled their bye for that week; most schools don’t want to take a bye in September so Mississippi State was the only one that might have considered it before deciding to take it before Alabama a few weeks later, closer to the middle of the season and before a division rival game. Florida’s other 5 SEC opponents (Alabama, LSU, Georgia, Vandy, South Carolina) didn’t have the option of taking the bye before Florida because they had an SEC game.

Of Alabama’s 8 SEC opponents, only 2 didn’t have the option of taking the bye before Alabama: Arkansas and Florida. The other 6 SEC opponents did, and all 6 of them chose to schedule it the week before Alabama: South Carolina, Ole Miss, Tennessee, LSU, Miss St and Auburn.

The SEC league office is the one that left the door open for this situation. Alabama has to play the schedule but nobody can seriously suggest that the fans of any other school wouldn’t be complaining if their last 6 conference opponents were coming off bye weeks given that history shows teams coming off bye weeks have a higher than normal winning percentage.

Take a look at this 2010 SEC Schedule Grid:

http://secfootball.itgo.com/2010schedule.html

It shows that it is actually rather easy to fix the problem. Bama’s number of post-bye-week SEC opponents could be reduced from six to four via four easy-to-make SEC schedule changes — with no domino effect:

1. AR vs SC from 11/6 to 10/2
2. GA vs AU from 11/13 to 11/20
3. MSU vs KY from 10/30 to 11/6
4. LSU vs MSU from 9/18 to 10/30

Not rocket science. It took all of 5 minutes.

TV is a potential issue, but otherwise, the above changes could be made easily — with no significant adverse impact on the difficulty of the schedules of the teams involved in those four suggested schedule changes.

SC’s rushing stats are misleading, given that they give up so many sacks. Take all the yards and rushing attempts that are sacks or called passing plays for SC and add them to the passing stats. I think you will find that the running game at SC is not as bad as everyone says it is and the passing game isn’t as good. Many cfb analysts completely miss this point over and over again. The stats should be computed the same way they are in the NFL. That being said, it is clear that SC’s OL is not very good.

I think too many travel plans have been made, leave requests from work, etc. to start messing with the schedule now. It is difficult to win the NC two years in a row regardless of the schedule because you become THE game of the year for every team you play (hats off to the Gators, here). At some point in life, you have to play the cards you are dealt.

I do wonder how UGA fans would feel if UF consistently had the week off before their game but UGA didn’t. But I guess that is a moot point because UF obviously doesn’t need the week off.

Do you think Curry can bring a bunch of high schoolers into Tuscaloosa and scare Bama? ARK has UGA the week before Bama. MSU, USC legit opponents and the off week will not make any difference. UT having an off week only means Derek will have an extra week to worry about the Tide.

Personally, I think UGA playing 11 straight weeks is a tougher schedule.(Even with Buffaloes and Vandals)

It will be interesting to see the kind of state that Lane Kiffin will leave Southern Cal in about three years or so. He may not be the sole or even primary reason that the Vols find themselves where they are now, but he did set that program back an additional 3-5 years. And yet, they almost all drank the kool-aid there in Vol land and they just loved it when Kiffey Boy would pull one of his antics. They all got on board that Lane Train and it took them right off that ‘ole Smokey Mountain. Now I actually feel sorry for them a little, even though they were the ones who sold their once proud program right down the Tennessee River.

2. GA vs AU from 11/13 to 11/20
3. MSU vs KY from 10/30 to 11/6
4. LSU vs MSU from 9/18 to 10/30

Not rocket science. It took all of 5 minutes.

TV is a potential issue, but otherwise, the above changes could be made easily — without increasing the difficulty of the schedules of the teams involved in those four changes.

Following our latest title, the screen name “Got 12?” confused a lot of posters who, incorrectly, assumed the “12″ referred to BAMA’s national championships.

Rocket Scientist, a real rocket scientist would realize that a relatively small percentage of people attending SEC games on a fall Saturday have to either take vacation or stay in a hotel to attend the game, so your 300,000 count for changing the dates of 3 or 4 games is probably a tad high. Roughly 90% of tickets are for the home team and the bulk of them would be for students who are on campus and fans who live within a 2-3 hour drive of the stadium and make the round trip on the day of the game. In many cases the schools are close enough to each other that even the visiting fans can easily make a day trip, as in Georgia-Tennessee, Auburn-Georgia, Tennessee-Vandy, Alabama-Auburn, Alabama-Miss St, etc.

Something tells me that there are probably plenty of hotel rooms available in the towns with SEC stadiums for weekends that are currently open dates this fall.

Georgia didn’t get any sympathy for playing a brutally tough schedule last year. Any gripes about it were justifiably criticized as whining. Alabama chose to play Penn State on their on volition. So there’s no point it complaining about that. Regardless, they open with San Jose State, play Duke in week three, have an open date prior to their crucual clash with LSU and play Georgia State – yes Georgia STATE – the week before the Auburn game. Just tee it up and play ball Saban. The schedule is no excuse.

Cracker Jacket,

It might interest you to know that during the bowl season Bama led the nation with the number of players who had already graduated and were working on a 2nd degree. I guess you never let the facts get in the way of your argument.

Alabama led the nation with 13 graduates on its roster during the 2009 regular season. Boston College and Virginia Tech were next with 10 each. Auburn was tied for fifth with eight.

Alabama was the only team among the top 12 on that list to reach a BCS bowl game.

Go inside the numbers, and they look even more impressive because they’re not overpopulated with scholarship players who stick around because they’re scholars, not players.

McElroy graduated magna cum laude with a GPA of 3.86, and he did it in three years — while trying to learn the offensive schemes of three different coordinators: Dave Rader, Major Applewhite and Jim McElwain.

Other starters who earned their degrees before the season began: Linebacker Eryk Anders, tackle Drew Davis, punter P.J. Fitzgerald, guard Mike Johnson, linebacker Cory Reamer, snapper Brian Selman and defensive end Lorenzo Washington.

The nine players who finished their degrees this fall include these starters: Cornerback Javier Arenas, defensive end Brandon Deaderick, fullback Baron Huber, cornerback Marquis Johnson, tight end Colin Peek and kicker Leigh Tiffin.

Add it up, and 14 Alabama players who could start in the BCS Championship Game will be college graduates. And it’s only a matter of time before other starters, like unanimous All-Americans Ingram and Rolando McClain, get their degrees.

Want more?

Alabama set a national record with six first-team AP All-Americans. Three of them — Arenas, Johnson and Tiffin — are graduates.

It makes headlines to scoff at the three days of school Alabama has canceled because of the championship game.

The real story is all the classes the Alabama football players have passed while building a championship team.

Hate that this has happened – but it is unfair to ask other teams fans to switch after schedules have been posted.

One on the big reasons Florida went on a huge win streak run against UGA – was Spurrier insisted on an open week before the UGA game.
This gave him 2 weeks to prepare and a fresh team. Georgia’s last two victories against Florida – the gators did NOT have an open week in 2004 and in 2007 – while UGA had an open week in 2007.

Give us a chance to straighten ourselves out, as we waited on you guys to do the same. Hell, I think we even beat you 3 of 4 times, even with Saban once on your home field. AS a SEC fan also, we are proud of you guys, but show a little class.

JB,

Saban got here in 2007. We had several 10+ winning seasons in the in between years pre Saban 99,02,05 and an sec title in 99 so its not as if we were gone for 20 years in between championships and no successful seasons.

Secondly, Bama fans love to kick Georgia fans with sand? Take a look back at the initial 50 comments and you will see a lot of the comments being dog fans deriding Bama fans right off the bat and calling us whiners over what any rational person can plainly see is a scheduling disparity that is blatantly unfair. Tony could write a blog on the Vandy commodores and it would be only a matter of time before the dog fans start in with comments about bama.

Thirdly,

Show a little class? Should we show the same kind of class dog fans were showing when you were pre season 08 no. 1 and did all manner of smack talking? Or how about all the smack talking after Georgia beat Bama in OT in Saban’s first year? Seems like you also got in a little dig mentioning that UGA won 3 of the last 4 against Bama. So what? We won 4 of the last 7 against UGA and hold the alltime edge 36-26 if you really want to go back and live in the past. And what’s more is that those 3 wins earlier in the 2000s came against probation sanctioned, scholarship depleted Alabama teams. Hell everyone was beating us when we were playing with half a deck and 21 fewer scholly players than everyone else.

Anyway, bottom line JB is that dog fans seem to start this crap every day with their little potshots at Bama. Funny but we don’t hear it from Gator fans or LSU fans and very little from even AU or UT fans. Its usually the dog fans that start off with their potshots. Some of your fellow posters need to clean up their own act and show some class before you talk to us about showing some class.

Bama is screwed!

Just to make this point……….. It does not matter what conference you are in when teams have 2 weeks to prepare for you. It is still gonna be hard for both teams.

And another thought………………………………………..

If Bama is sooooooooooo good, then why are they complaining?

All of the teams in the SEC are gonna have a hard time when it comes to playing in the conference. And I, as a GT fan, am not afraid to say that the SEC is by far the hardest conference. But that does not mattter, all the teams have to play. All of them have to win.

Saban is a cheating cry baby and will never be a Bear. What is he afraid of a challenge? He did away with the team that should have beat him with that bad hit on the Texas quarterback in the Championship Game. Tell me that wasn’t a planned move, and I will show you a pattern. He took out Charles Scott at LSU and ended his college career knowing he could run straight through his defense and beat Bama.
Maybe this will be the true test of a “Champion,” allow all conference teams to have a bi week against their champ. Raise the stakes a bit.

Bama fans…don’t expect too much symphathy here about your schedule or for that matter anything else. Welcome back to the top. These Georgia fans have more excuses than Tiger’s got mistresses. Be prepared to hear this all year… that you only win because Saban cheats or that the refs give you favorable calls, or that Mike Slive wants Bama in the SECCG against UF or that your schedule is too easy etc etc etc. God forbid Mark Ingram ever has a concussion because they’ll all suddenly turn into brain surgeons and say he should never play again and that Saban will risk his health and even his players life just for a W. And of course, don’t let a job open up anywhere, especially in the pros, ’cause you know Sabans heading there. And that they’d rather have Mark Richt anyway because he is such a nice guy and so classy and Saban is just a another jerk. Have I pretty much covered it doggies??

Bama was a national power in the 90s with Gene Stallings winning 70 games in 7 years in an era of 11 game regular seasons. Oh, he also won the national championship. Only florida was better in the 90s in the sec. We also won the sec in 99 and had stellar seasons in 96 and 97. If there weren’t many Bama fans on this blog it certainly wasn’t due to lack of success.

JB,

Also we had 10 win seasons in 02, 05 despite being on probation and won the division title outright in 02. We didn’t play in the seccg due to the probation in 02. In 2005 we spent the majority of the season in the top 5 and about a third of the season ranked 3rd in the country behind USC and Texas. A double OT loss in the 10th game to LSU was our first loss of the season. Still won 10 games though including a cotton bowl win over Texas Tech. You act like we disappeared for 10 years or so when the reality is that we still had some successful seasons sandwiched around the probation years.

Are you just freaking stupid? As anyone who watched the Texas game the tackle on Colt McCoy was as clean a tackle as there is. If McCoy is going to run the ball you have to tackle him. Same with Charles Scott. How you can call the tackle on McCoy “planned” is moronic. And then you say we “took out” Charles Scott. No. We just tackled him like any other tackle and he landed awkwardly on his shoulder. Its called football and injuries happen you freaking moron. You won’t find one LSU poster on here who would say tackling Charles Scott was a “takeout”. Man are you stupid or what?

I’m not calling Georgia bush league. I never said that and most Bama fans don’t. The true irony is that most Bama fans actually pull for Georgia in the east over UF and especially UT. And I don’t deny that Georgia is a good, solid program with all the intangibles including recruiting base, facilities, alumni who care, etc. to win a national title.

What I’m saying is that if you go back and look on practically every blog on every day it always starts off in the first 50 comments with at least 3 or 4 dog fans taking cheapshots at Bama, often when the blog subject has nothing to do with Bama. All Jealous, yes that is a very debated topic among LSU fans. It’s no secret that he is not the best in-game manager, or a “hands on” coach, like say a Nick Saban. But keep in mind. We had to kick that knucklehead Perrilloux off the team and had to start freshman quarterbacks before they were ready. That really set us back two years. And he does continue to recuit well. Not to mention ‘07 NC. But yes, most of us in Tiger Nation are a bit concerned as well. This is a huge year for our program, and after this year, we only have 9 seniors leaving, setting us up nicely for a good run in 2011.

This is a tough schedule. Kind of like UGA’s the last 2 years. IN 2008 UGA played LSU, Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, Florida, South Carolina, Vandy, and Kentucky all before their break. In fact, it’s typical for UGA to play all their schedule and get a break at the end before Tech. Saban needs to stop whining.

Everybody deals with this. Any SEC game is a rivalry (some a lot more than others). Any team will bruise you up or surprise you. In addition, throw in a respectable out of conference team (or two). It is demanding. I like things much better than in the 90s when to be number one the best strategy was to whip the snot out of 9 patsies and play one real game. You know, kind of like Boise State and USC do now.

Good points about SC. This could be the year for Spurrier. If he can get some production from the OL, Lattimore will do the rest. Tough break for Bama. Does the SEC have the authority to step in? Can they force changes or only suggest? Either way, everyone is already geeked up to play the defending National Champions, giving 6 SEC opponents a bye week to prepare makes it that much tougher for Bama to repeat.

That’s a stupid statement considering the NCAA doesn’t hand out national titles in college football. Going off of your comments, NO ONE can claim a national title.

Saban will manage the mess that the scheduler in SEC could not figure out – but this is too easy of a fix to not have been noticed by the guy who does the scheduling – he needs to hire a bright high school intern to help him out next time ! Then the SEC should fire the scheduler for lack of intellect !

UGA had the 7th most difficult schedule in the country last year based on the BCS computers…. by far the most difficult in the SEC. Maybe UGA didn’t play against a lot of teams that had open dates before they played UGA but most of these teams played warm up games such as Florida Southern and such before they played UGA. The scedule will be easier this season but still not many push overs on the list.

Who the heck are these purported SEC fans who do not know their national championship history? Auburn went 10-0 under Shug Jordan in 1957 and was selected by the Associated Press Poll as national champion, as well as a majority of the other selectors. UP, and a minority of other polls, selected 9-1 Ohio State.

Give the Auburn Tigers their due–they have have won a legitimate national football championship, too, just like Alabama, Florida, LSU, Tennessee, Georgia, Ole Miss, Kentucky and Arkansas. Among current SEC members, only Mississippi State, South Carolina and Vanderbilt cannot claim a legitimate major national poll championship–and Vandy had some damn fine teams from 1900 to 1920 that should have been seriously considered when Parke Davis and Helms Athletic Foundation were passing out all of those retroactive, pre-1935 championships decades after the fact, to Princeton, Yale, Harvard, Michigan, Notre Dame, Southern Cal, and, yes, Alabama.

I’ve said it before that Bama fans are the most annoying fans in the world when their team is winning. I had neighbors that were Bama fans when i was a kid. Because of them, i absolutely despise Alabama worse than Florida. I asked them several times if Alabama is so great why don’t you move back. I rate Florida fans much higher than Bama’s even though we play Florida every year and it’s our most bitter rival. I cannot wait for this year when Bama lose 3 or 4 games and everything is right in the world again and we don’t have to be annoyed by their presence.

I know every bama fan will use the fact that Bill Curry coaches Georgia State as an excuse for scheduling them, but the fact is this is their FIRST year with a football team. Alabama was national champion last year. There is absolutely no reason to have Georgia State on your schedule this year.

The SEC’s always trying to hose Alabama—now they stick them with a schedule deliberately to help other teams like Auburn and Tennessee. Bama needs to file a protest and get the schedule changed, ASAP! Without Bama, the SEC would be nothing! Bear wouldn’t put up with this and neither should Saban.

Good to see the Bammer fans out in force. How soon they forget they have beaten UGA one time since 1995 and that one time has a * by it because they were cheating again and had to give up the win, alone with quite few more. Congrats on your championship, things fell your way, including 2 blocked FGs by a fat man, but were was the unsportsman like penalty for ripping his helmet off on the field? I guess it was with the no holding calls for the season, Bammer is hard to beat when they have 18 on the field.

Why not complain about those powerhouses that they play this year, last year, and the year before. Scheduling the patsies is the real Bama problem, not what the other teams do before they play Bama. The bear would’ve said take care of your game, the rest will take care of itself. Apparenlty Saban says it is not fair for the other teams to make schedules that they like. UGA plays 3 teams every year. The Vols, Gators, and Auburn. The rest of the schedule is easy by talent alone. UGA has better talent every year than everybody on their schedule. winning 10 a yr shouldn’t be hard for UGA they just have to have 1 upset to get to 10. If UGA wins 8 then UGA got upset in some game.

This happens off and on in the SEC. There have been teams with 4 and 5 in the past, but I don’t ever recall six. The OOC slate factors into this, as those dates are set before the SEC games.

It’s makes me wonder why no one has ever looked into this in the past. It took Alabama getting a bad turn for someone to actually talk about getting something done.

UA Alum, since you have only won 3 of your last 12 games against Florida, you might not want to bring up the dogs woes. While you have a better record than the Dawgs against UF, it’s not good enough to be talking down to others.

KimZ, if you think Bama’s schedule is typically tougher than UGA’s you need to just stop posting. You are just making the Alabama posters with some common sense look foolish.

Thanks, Steve, but we of course don’t play them every year, the last time we did we drilled them for the SEC title, and even at 3 out of 12, that’s a better winning percentage than UGA at 3 of 20.

The reality is that the Tide has literally turned and is positioned for national title consideration year end, year out. We’ve had our share of dark days with Dubose, Price, Shula, etc. and can speak from experience of how good it feels to be on this side of the conversation.

“It’s makes me wonder why no one has ever looked into this in the past. It took Alabama getting a bad turn for someone to actually talk about getting something done.”

Actually Steve it took Alabama getting the same sort of stacked deck three straight seasons before it was brought up . The breakdown of how many opponents for other schools had off dates before they played over the same time frame has been posted ad nauseum . The closest team was LSWho at 7 while Bama had faced 17 . EVERYONE else was even lower than that .

The fact that the Tide ran off back to back undefeated seasons is irrelevant . It is BS . If it were happening to Georgia instead of Bama the Dawg fans would instantly run it up the flagpole as the reason for the crap seasons Georgia produced instead of the back to back undefeated ones Bama managed . You can IMAGINE it “happens to every team” all you want … but it doesn’t .

It hasn’t even been remotely close number wise and if it EVER had been you would still hear the howling till this day by fans of whichever school it was claiming that was why they didn’t win a title in year X ….
