Can Georgia Tech repeat as ACC champs?

This time last year I sat in Paul Johnson’s office and my inquiring mind wanted to know: After one season in the ACC, what would be the over/under on how many times Johnson would be asked whether or not the league had caught up with his offense? The question was asked every year when he was at Navy, so it was bound to come up here.

Johnson smiled because he already had his answer ready. “Yeah, we’ve been running this offense 26 years but THIS will be the year that people catch on.” It was pretty big hit at ACC media days in July.

As it turned out, most of the teams Georgia Tech played may have THOUGHT they knew what was coming, but they had a hard time stopping it. The Yellow Jackets were second in the nation in rushing (295.43 ypg), 15th in scoring offense (33.79 ppg) and won their first outright ACC championship since 1990. Now there were some disappointments along the way. The Yellow Jacket defense struggled against Georgia and lost to the state rival the week before the ACC championship game. And the Orange Bowl performance against Iowa was certainly nothing to write home about.

But there weren’t a lot of people who predicted that in only two seasons Johnson would deliver a conference championship and a berth in a BCS bowl.

“This time a year ago the program was light years from where it was when we got here,” said Johnson. “We took a step forward last season. Now we have to see if we can take another step forward.”

A year ago the question of the day was whether or not opposing  defenses had learned the nuances of Johnson’s option offense. This season the major question will be whether or not Georgia Tech will move forward or take a step back after the loss of four great football players: RB Jonathan Dwyer and WR Demaryrius Thomas on offense and defensive end Derrick Morgan and safety Morgan Burnett on defense.

“We are going to miss those guys because they were really good players but it’s our job as coaches to recruit and develop players to fill those holes,” said Johnson. “And now players who have been waiting their turn get their opportunity. We’ll see if they take advantage of it.”

Truth be told, the Georgia Tech offense is going to be good again. Josh Nesbitt returns for his senior season at quarterback and, if he stays healthy, will run for over 1,000 yards again. Johnson has to find a backup he can trust because Nesbitt will miss a series now and then simply because of the pounding he takes.  In the early going David Sims looks like he could be that guy. Anthony Allen played the “A” back last season to Dwyer’s “B” back. Allen is a really a “B” back, said Johnson, but he wasn’t going to beat out Dwyer and he was just too good to stand on the sidelines waiting.

Thomas averaged 25.1 yards per catch and will be missed but everyone at Tech expects Stephen Hill (22.8 average on six catches) to step right in and make big plays against defenses who are (rightfully) obsessed with the running game.

It’s the defense where Georgia Tech has a chance to take a quantum leap beyond where it has been the past two seasons. The Yellow Jackets were 56th nationally in scoring defense last season (24.79 ppg) and, more importantly, lacked any real identity.

That is about to change.

In convincing Al Groh, the former Virginia and New York Jets head coach, to join the Georgia Tech staff as a defensive coordinator, Johnson has potentially done for the defense what he did for the offense when he came as head coach.

“Just like our offense, I wanted our defense to have a clear system and a clear personality that everyone understood,” Johnson said. “Al Groh knows defense and he knows exactly what he wants to do. And he will be able to teach it to our players.”

Groh teaches the 3-4 defense, which is a staple in the NFL and is starting to gain popularity in college football. Nick Saban used it to win a national championship at Alabama in 2009. Clemson’s Kevin Steele is getting good results in the ACC. Georgia hired Todd Grantham from the Dallas Cowboys to install the 3-4.

The system puts a premium on large, fast linebackers, which are easier to find in recruiting than the dominating defensive linemen. The learning curve can be steep, but once players get it, they usually like it.

“We always tell our players and the people we recruit that there are a lot of ways to be successful in football and to win games,” said Groh. “But this way works. We’ve proven it.”

If Georgia Tech can improve on defense then the Jackets won’t be faced with the weekly dilemma of having to simply outscore people to win.

“When you can get some stops it takes some pressure off of the offense,” said Johnson. “And I’ll think we’ll do that.”

Georgia Tech will need to play better on defense because the ACC Coastal is going to be better in 2010. Miami looks like it may be finally ready to turn the corner under Randy Shannon. North Carolina returns a ton of people on defense and just needs to improve on offense. Virginia Tech will still be Virginia Tech but this season the Hokies return two 1,000-yard rushers instead of one.

It will not be an easy path for Georgia Tech as three out of the first five games (Kansas, North Carolina, Wake Forest) are on the road. There are also road games to Clemson, Virginia Tech and Georgia.

“I just tell the guys that with all of those players leaving nobody believes they can win anything,” Johnson said. “But it’s up to us to prove that they are wrong. Nobody gives you anything. If we’re willing to work hard enough, we’ll be just fine.”

I’m happy Groh landed somewhere. The years I spent watching him at UVA, I realized he may be a “defense guy,” but his teams didn’t always show it. I thought he did well with some of the secondary and the linebackers, but he basically needed a Chris Long to have a successful defensive line.

I think Georgia Tech has a good chance to win the ACC with Groh, provided they get some good D-Line recruits. I wish Groh the best, but I am glad UVA has Mike London instead (even though it will be a few years before UVA will find itself in another 9 win season or Gator Bowl trip).

And Geaux Tigers.

In his autobiography, STOP ACTION, Dick Butkus talked of the Bears teams of his era & how frustrating it was to know that the D unit could keep the team “in the game” if they could hold the opponent to under 17 points . The problem for them was that they could never manage to score that many. GT will score , no worries , but to reduce the defensive trend will be a huge task in this first season. The learning curve of the new roles & terminology alone will create opportunities for other teams. Special teams play will be a deciding factor as will hopefully a disciplined unit that will not hurt itself with stupid penalties.

I don’t see GT going to Blacksburg and winning. When is the last time GT won at chapel hill? Miami is in Atlanta so that is in GT favor.

I see 9-3 and 2nd place in the division and a good bowl.

VT vs FSU in ACC title game. VT is my sleeper pick to win national title if their defense can step up. Problem is, even with a win over Boise and running the table in the ACC, Bama and Ohio state will probably play for the title.

Division is tougher, but I think we will be fine and should have a great shot at the ACC title. The defense will definitely be better. The players were not very happy with Wommack as a coach. He seemed like a nice guy, but not a very good coach.

Under CPJ the Jackets are beginning to learn to win consistently . They expect to win everytime they step on the field. That said , I think V Tech is just too loaded. G Tech will be 8- 4 and tied for 2nd in the Coastal Division. Then we will get the crappiest bowl because that always seems to be the way it plays out.
BTW, Jackets beat the Dead Puppies by 10.

Still can’t believe we lost to UGA with all the struggles they faced last year. Also, I would be shocked if we equaled the accomplishments of 2009 much less last year. We lost 4 games two years ago and 3 games last year. We have every rival game on the road this year. We likely drop one game against the Wake Forests, Kansas, Duke, NC State, MTSU, or UVA and win the other 5. We beat the one cupcake giving us 6 wins. Miami at home is a toss up. Clemson, UNC, UGA, and Virginia Tech – We will be the underdog in each of those games. We drop 3 of the four. Thus…8 wins is optimistic this year. 6-6 is pesimistic. So…7-5 will be the result. Tech winds up in the Bowl game in Texas next year.

Although Georgia Tech lost several playmakers from last year’s team, they will be replacing them with Paul Johnson’s recruits for the first time. The offensive line will finally start to get bigger up front after utilizing smaller linemen the first 2 years. The defense will be much improved, so the Yellow Jackets will again be competing for the top rung in the conference. Should be an interesting year on the Flats.

We also won the Advocare 100 Independence Bowl in Shreveport, the center of the football universe as everyone knows. Ask any Bulldawg and he will tell you: we won the ACC last year because we beat a single team in that conference – that makes sense doesn’t it? We will also win a National Championship this year just like we almost did last year and the year before that. As we always say: “Wait until next year”… and it is next year so we will be National Champions because we are the University of Georgia Bulldogs. Enough said.

UNC is a trendy pick because of their defense, but have you seen that offense? I don’t think they got a first down until the fourth quarter last year against Tech. I’m not kidding. VT is really good next year, I don’t like our chances there on a Thursday night in Blacksburg. Other than that, I don’t see many landmines for Tech. 1. We really don’t care what they think.
2. It isn’t about Tech’s “playmakers” it is about the system.
3. Tech’s “random” bowl which was a BCS bowl is lightyears better than Shreveport.
4. Adding Groh and a defense can only improve upon last year.
5. They need to be concerned for their own team. They need to figure out how to keep their low life players out of jail.

The team will be better this year, but the record may not reflect that due to a tougher schedule.

This will be a tough season. UNC on the road early and then the 3 game stretch late of @ Clemson, @ VT and Miami will be the key games. But we have the most important player on the field coming back, Nesbitt. Having a proven QB, especially running CPJ’s offense, is huge. Just ask the doggies.

UGA: Preseason national champs

If GT runs a highschool offense, then UGA looked like a recreation department team on 29 NOV 2008.

@buckhead dawg, no one in the nation cares about UGA right now. They’ve lost the only things worth talking about. No Moreno, no Stafford, no nothing. Just some dog that sits on the sideline and barks sometimes and 3 QBs no one has never heard of going for the starting spot on a sucky offensive team. If UGA won the SEC, I think people would be more upset that a better team didn’t win it.

As long as GT is in the ACC they have a shot at winning the conference. However, Duke may be the only team in the ACC that doesn’t start out with a ligitimate shot at the conference championship and that’s starting to change. The ACC is by far the confence with the most parity in college football….not to say that’s good…they have just managed to get the most mediocre teams and put them in one conference. It’s basically the equivalent of C-USA…you don’t have to raise your level of play to win the conference you just have to try and not slip us as much as the rest of the teams.

Here are my predictions. VT will win the ACC, GT will probably be the second best team in the ACC. I think we will be better then people expect, just like every year. I also think that we will put up tons of yards rushing and tons of points. At some point we will have a bad game though and all the idiots will declare that our offense doesnt work and that everyone has it figured out now. Then the next week we will rush for 400 yds and score 40 points.

Oh, and with a week off to prep for PJ’s goofball offense, he’s going to get stuffed too. Just like they did the last time they came to the Hill. We gave away a late 4th qtr. long TD to make Dwyer’s stats look good; otherwise the gnats got zip all day. I’ll admit…when you only see cpj’s system once a year, it takes some time to drill against it…one week is not enough. Look at your schedule beez fans. You get no break this time. The Heels won’t be the only opponent who’ll get an extra week to prep for your junk.

I don’t think 9-3 or 10-2 is an unreasonable guess. 9-3 is more likely though.

Everyone keeps talking up VT, but I’m not all that threatened by them. They proved last year that they are helpless to stop our offense (as most teams were) and they can’t wheel out Williams & Evans every down because they both do the same thing. UNC couldn’t score on Paris Hilton so unless they fix that, they won’t be a threat either. I expect Miami and Climpsun to be our toughest in-conference opponents and for UGA to be much improved next year too.

The case has been assigned to a detective and is under investigation, Athens police spokeswoman Hilda Sorrow said Thursday. No charges have been filed.

Georgia coach Mark Richt said after the Bulldogs’ practice Thursday night that he is aware of the police report.

“Right now, it’s speculation,” Richt said. “We don’t know anything for sure. But I’m aware of the report, and I’m just waiting to see what’s going to happen from here, really. I don’t want to over- or under-react at this point.”

Richt said he was informed of the matter as he was walking onto the practice field late Thursday afternoon.

“I … haven’t had a chance to really talk to anybody about it,” he said.

The police report states that the UGA student and his wife were taking a taxi van home around 2 a.m. Sunday when the driver stopped to pick up four males in downtown Athens — “all of whom were UGA football players, according to [the male victim].”

He told police that the four men cursed and threatened him and his wife and that one of the four “slapped or punched” both him and his wife in the back of their heads, according to the report.

No players were identified in the police report, which said the “victims state that the taxi driver claimed to not know any of the suspects’ identities.” The report did not indicate why the husband thought the men were football players.

Police are investigating the case for possible charges of simple battery and making terroristic threats.

No Daniel, the UGA games are included in the overall records I gave. If you are happy with having a bad team in each sport but beating GT then good for you, continue being happy. Im perfectly happy losing to UGA but winning the ACC championship in football, almost winning it in basketball, making the NCAA tournament, and having the #2 baseball team in the country. You guys should strive for more then just beating us.

I do support GT (Calvin Johnson should have won the Heisman! and I have been there for several games, even when we my Noles aren’t there. I think the campus and stadium are nice, but small. I like the fact you can see the ATL skyline from the stands, but the student body doesn’t understand football passion, or possess beautiful co-eds. Two things FSU excels at. A chapter of my fraternity is at GT and there were many more FSU brothers there partying than people who actually lived there, they were hiding in their rooms until gametime.

Simple answer…probably not…but on the other hand…it’s possible…and slightly above average college football team could win the weak acc!

A few FACTS for the delusional acc/tech fans that really think the acc is relevant in the world of MAJOR college football:

1. All time record SEC/acc head to head..SEC leads 255-123-10

2. All bowl record by conference: 1. SEC..196-153

5. acc..82-87

BCS bowl records: SEC 13-5 (.772)
acc 2-11 (.167) By far the worst among BCS conferences

All time bowl record SEC/acc head to head..SEC leads 35-14

tech’s bowl record last 10 years..3-7

tech’s last MAJOR bowl win….53 years ago! And counting!

UGA vs tech series record: Pre 1963 tech led the series 27-26!
Since then (When tech powers to be at the time..mainly Bubby Dudd..decided tech was bigger than the sec and made by far the STUPIDEST decision EVER in big time college college football and left the conference to become a “powerful independant”..UGA leads the series 34-12!

Now ya’ll can get back to your argument as to whether tech can or can’t win the acc chumpionship again…AKA the “Prettiest hog in the pen contest”!

Yes….GT once had a proud and glorious history in college football…..Most of you here may have read about it……you sure as hell did not witness it!

30-24!

UGA fans hate GT because despite having high standards, GT has four times as many national championships as UGA in football. GT does not cut corners in order to win like UGA does. GT doesn’t sign players with questionable grades or character issues. You will never see a final exam at GT with questions like “How many points is a three pointer worth” or “How many halfs are in a BB game”. You will never hear statements at GT like the one in the Jan Kemp trial, “If we can just teach him (UGA football players) to read and write, maybe he can work at the post office instead of being a garbage man”. You WILL hear things like CALCULUS, TRADITION, and NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS! UGA fans you boast and brag about how big your stadium is, playing in the mighty SEC, etc. One thing you NEVER brag about is how many NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS you have! That is what it’s all about! UGA fans you know that your program has started to slip (and it hasn’t been that good anyway) Richt is just a few more tanning bed visits shy of frying his brain completely while the great Coach Paul Johnson has GT headed back to where they belong, among the elite of the nation. UGA will never pass GT as the greatest football program in the state of georgia! Shouldn’t a great program have NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS? How many are listed on your stadium?????? WHY IS THIS??????? HOW CAN THIS BE????????

GT is getting some good character and talented kids, and CPJ knows how to win against more talented teams, he has proven this. Maybe, but I doubt it, that after this year, people will realize we have one of the best head football coaches in America. I just hope some of the teams we play think like their fans. Realistic Tech Fans, if you were offered 9-3 and a Gator Bowl trip now would you take it?

I love this question. Only problem is that the Gator Bowl won’t be hosting an ACC team this year. The equivalent will be the Champs Sports Bowl. But back to the question. It kind of assumes that GT won’t be making the ACC champ game. If there was a 10-3 season with loss in ACC champ game, then I would definitely take that. But 9-3 is a pretty good result if one were being realistic. This is a tough schedule year for GT. Toughest home game is Miami, but there are a lot of hazards on the road. The crazy thing is that GT went 9-3 two years ago when the offense only clicked for about 4 full games. So I want to believe that the sky’s the limit for GT. But being realistic, the D may not be any good this year, and the O may take a step back. Best result would be an offense at 90% of last year’s production and a better D, which might just be a 9-3 year. So if I were betting something, I would take the 9-3 year and go home. With nothing at stake, I dream big and root for something better.

GT’s lines on both sides are too small. Recruiting at Tech has dropped off under CPJ. It was easy to play defense with Gailey’s kids. Got harder last year, and will be quite bad this year. He’s a great gameday coach, but CPJ lacks the talent to repeat. GT’s 2010 schedule with my odds of winning:

Sat. 09/04/10 South Carolina State – 98% blah
Sat. 09/11/10 at Kansas – 33% Going across country so early is never good
Sat. 09/18/10 at North Carolina – 25% UNC has SEC size on their DL and can manhandle the TO
Sat. 09/25/10 NC State – 50% – At home, tough game after two weeks away
Sat. 10/02/10 at Wake Forest – 70% Wake lost everything
Sat. 10/09/10 Virginia – 66% A team with new coaches on both sides of the ball at home,
Sat. 10/16/10 Middle Tennessee – 98% blah
Sat. 10/23/10 at Clemson – 50% Because lost a lot on offense and I think they lose Parker, too D is very good even w/o R Sapp.
Sat. 10/30/10 Open Date
Thu. 11/04/10 at Virginia Tech – 50% Budd Foster will have the same defensive problems Tech is having, but it’s on the road so a coin flip at best.
Sat. 11/13/10 Miami (FL) – 33% 2nd best DL with best overall DLman (Bailey) they’ll see all year. If Jacoby has grown as a passer at all, it’ll be ugly for GT. at leadt it’s at home.
Sat. 11/20/10 Duke – 66% No Lewis, one of the few ACC teams GT has more talent then, at home
Sat. 11/27/10 at Georgia – 50% transition year for UGA’s defense. Never good when facing the TO, Logan who? Too bad Murray isn’t quite ready. Coin flip cause it’s in Athens.

That’s comes out to right at 7 wins. 7-5, with 4-4 in ACC play. Tough Coastal games on the road undue GT this year.

Tony Barnhart seems to have hit this one spot on. Tech will continue to make adjustments with the offense, and the defense will present something entirely new, scheme-wise.

Yes, Tech lost a starting DE and starting safety to the NFL. This year Tech brings back a starting DE who missed the season and a starting safety who missed the last 9 games. Plus, *two* starters at right OT. A lot of games will be predictably close, and the outcomes will depend on how well the team performs and responds to adversity on game day.

Butts Wagner

April 4th, 2010

naganole,

I think you’re either overestimating some of GT’s opponents or underestimating GT. I see 7 definite wins and 5 toss-up games. So if one assumes GT wins half of the toss-ups(2.5, rounded down to be conservative), then GT should go 9-3 in the regular season. I really think that all of the toss-up games are truly toss-ups because each of the tougher teams have different strengths and weaknesses. If I had to rank the toughest games from likeliest GT win to least likely GT win, it would look like this(as of today): UNC, VT, Uga, Clemson, Miami. Basically, I think the teams with the strongest offense will have the best chance against GT because I think these 5 teams all have similar defensive talent(and Uga is a bit of an unknown at the moment due to the new scheme). But there are so many uncertainties as of now(such as whether Parker stays at Climpson), that my level of confidence is likely to change. The hope for GT is that there is statistically insignificant drop off on offense and the defense takes a step forward. The defensive numbers at UVA during Groh’s years there do not lie. He is a good defensive coach. To get back to a point that needs to be reiterated: If the UVA and GT offenses were switched last year, UVA would have had one of the top rated defenses in the country(like top 10) and GT’s defense would have ranked as one of the worst(like 5 or 10 worst). There are, of course, other factors at play, but if Groh can improve GT’s defensive rate stats(yards allowed per play, etc) by, say, 10-15%, that will make a huge difference. Subtle improvements on defense might be worth a game this year, which might be the difference between winning the division or not. If you want to make gamblers sweat, isn’t 9 wins the current line? To make it difficult on the doubters, I’ll drop it to 8.5

naganole

April 4th, 2010
12:55 am

Butts Wagner- The problem GT will have is scheduling, and when and where it plays teams. At Kansas and the At UNC, home for NS State, then the middle of the schedule is a little easier, then At Clemson and At VTI, followed by UM. That’s a couple of tough stretches. You have to remember these games aren’t on neutral fields. Being away matters. I also don’t think GT has the talent on the defense this year that they’ve had recently. New scheme will take a while to install. I think GT’s offense might be better this year. A backs > B Backs for big play potential in the TO, and GT’s depth and talent at A Back is the best it’s been under CPJ…

Stupid stupid stupid. UNC’s defense is not trendy. They finished 6th last year and have everybody back this year plus good reshirts and backups. You can’t refer to last year’s offense in talking about this year’s team. It will be much improved this year. The wide receivers are very talented and were highly recruited. Greg Little will be one of most dangerous offensive players in country. Jerhamie Boyd and the Jones kid were all-world out of high school. They will be sophomores this year. TJ Yates can make all the right throws, problem is, he is capable of making the wrong throws as well. If he makes better decisions, the offense will keep the defense off the field this year. If so, GaTech, VaTech…be careful when you play beneath the pines this year.

Tech wins the ACC again, easily—mark it down. Paul Johnson is clearly the best coach in the conference and GT will dominate again. Georgia? another minor bowl on the horizon—none of those 3 QBs are any good, no matter what Richt says. Ga will lose big to Florida, Auburn and Tech and lose 2 more games. But, 7-5 will get you to a bowl somewhere.

GT will not win the ACC again. They do not have a quarterback who can pass the football
because the coach does not like to pass. The game of football is usually played by most all teams
with both passing and rushing in the offense. GT has been fortunate to get away with just rushing
for 2 years. It will not last forever. If this is such a great offense why do other teams not use it?

Who cares? As long as they lose to UGA 7 to 9 times a decade, they can win the ACC every year as far as I am concerned.

Kincade Licks Buck’s Nuggets – So as long as you win against them, you don’t care if GT makes a BCS Bowl every year while you go to the PaPaJohns.com bowl?? WOW…

The better question is….if they do or don’t repeat…Who Will Care?
Its like the old question…if a tree falls in the forest and there is noone there to hear it, does it make a sound?

If Yech repeats, who will see it, hear or again care?

@ “dawgwithanIQof88″, if people didn’t care (including yourself), would there be 270 comments on this story?

at this point in time, and the foreseeable future, GT is the more relevant football team, both locally and nationally.

it’s good to be a yellow jacket.
