Where does Tennessee go from here?

So much for taking some time off.

After 30 years in the business, not a lot surprises me any more. Lane Kiffin’s bolt for USC just three weeks away from National Signing Day surprises me. It also makes me sad. This is not a good night for college football. Some quick thoughts:

**–With this shocking decision, Lane Kiffin proved he is everything we thought he was. He used the University of Tennessee in the worst possible way.

**–The Tennessee people will not understand because USC is simply not a better job. It’s in California, which is more suited to Kiffin’s personality, but it is not a better job by any measure.

**–You have to wonder what Kiffin is thinking because, based on everything I’ve heard, USC is going to get hammered by the NCAA. I just hope he didn’t leave an NCAA mess at Tennessee that others will have to clean up.

**–Mike Hamilton, the Tennessee AD, is going to be under tremendous pressure to bring some stabilty to the program. The fact is that he got played by Kiffin. Mike is a good guy but I wouldn’t want to be in his shoes tonight.

**–There is going to be some support to bring Phillip Fulmer back. Before you dismiss the idea, just think about it. Tennessee needs stability and somebody who cares about the school, which Kiffin obviously did not. Even the people who fired Fulmer never questioned his love for UT.

**–If not Fulmer, then who? I would call Will Muschamp and tell him that Mack Brown and his new $5 million deal are not going to retire anytime soon.

**–If not Fulmer or Will Muschamp, why not David Cutcliffe? Tennessee’s quarterbacks have only been good when he was the offensive coordinator.

**–A bunch of people around the SEC are smiling tonight. Kiffin was a time bomb waiting to explode all over this league. I promise you that commissioner Mike Slive is not sheading any tears over this. Kiffin was a pain in the butt.

**–I feel for the Tennessee people. They supported this guy and were ready for the program to become a contender again. They have to feel used as well.

**–If I’m a Tennessee player, I’m pretty disillusioned right now. This is not good for college. This is not good at all.

Sad, sad day.

A College Fact

January 12th, 2010
11:07 pm

The NCAA claims to care about student athletes but that’s not the case. It’s time to address this age of BIG money and un loyal coaches. Take scholorships for school’s who steal coaches under contract. Take them from the school who solicits a coach under contract and force them to give them to the school who losses the coach. I’ve not come up with the sanctions but take 4 if it’s after year one and so on. Money and buyouts won’t help but taking scholarships will make programs think twice from stealing a coach under contract and if a coach is under contract shouldn’t they honor it like the rest of society who has a REAL job!

THIS IS WRONG

January 12th, 2010
11:08 pm

Why can’t the NCAA make contracts enforceable? If Kiffen chooses to sign a multi-year contract, why shouldn’t he have to honor it even if a better offer comes along? Chipper Jones can’t ignore his contract with the Braves even if the Yankees offer him more money or a better chance to win the World Series. Why should college coaches get to ignore their contracts? Honoring a contract isn’t slavery. Why should coaches be able to lie to prospects? The NCAA needs to stop this mess before the problem gets worse.

Why is UT a better job than USC? I imagine Kiffin will have a lot easier time recruiting there than in Knoxville. Pac 10 is weaker than the SEC. Weather is better. Scenery is nicer.

This is fantastic. The best possible outcome would be to sanction the crap out of that program and bomb them back to what they were in the 80’s and 90’s just when the rest of the Pac 10 is on the cusp of being pretty good.

May they be blasted by UCLA for the next 15 years.

Of course we loved “our boy.” We didn’t appreciate it when he acted like an ass, but he was recruiting and his dad brought major respect to the program. This is a coaching betrayal that you really can’t be philosophical about…it leaves the Tennessee program in shambles, going from a top 10 recruiting class to basically nothing because Kiffin and Orgeron will steal all of the recruits, and on top of that we have all sorts of NCAA messes to clean up after him and his crew.

I agree with Tony that more than anything else the Tennessee program needs stability now (not a “good” coach or a “bad” coach, but at least a warm body that stay for more than 1 season).. I hope the NCAA sanctions Kiffin’s career out of existence in the future.

Michael

Wrong Tony. I can’t stand Kiffin but USC is a much better job. First of all, it’s LA, not the deep mud eating sister kissing deep south sesspool of Tennessee (sorry i’m a Gator fan couldn’t help it). Second, he has a much easier route to the BCS national title game in the PAC 10 than in the SEC, he doesn’t have to beat Urban Meyer, Nick Saban, Steve Spurrier, and Mark Richt to get there. California has as much talent to recruit as anywhere. And USC is pretty much a turn key operation, he has to rebuild Tennessee and obviously isn’t up to the task as Meyer is kicking his tail in recruiting (again).

Jon Gruden will be the next head coach at UT. I believe his family has ties to Tennessee. Look for a deal and announcement to happen in less than a week. Now what makes this quick UT head coach announcement sad is that UT can loose Kiffin and hire Gruden faster than CMR can find and hire a DC. UGA should go ahead and offer Manny Diaz the DC job, its a no brainer check his resume out for yourself at http://www.goblueraiders.com/coach.cfm/name/manny-diaz/id/279

Tony, of COURSE USC is a better job! Sure, Tennessee’s football history is every bit as illustrious as USC’s, but as of this moment USC’s recent success, popularity, and draw on recruits (not to mention its attractive location) make it a FAR better program than Tennessee, which has been beleaguered by recruiting violations and the recent rise of Florida as a perennial SEC East power.

The Governor of Tennessee is none too pleased with the state of things at UT:

The University of Tennessee needs to clean up the sports program after two recent incidents involving the arrest of student-athletes, Gov. Phil Bredesen said.

Bredesen, who is chairman of the UT board of trustees, told The Chattanooga Times Free Press he hopes to see improvement in the athletic program’s image.

“I think it’s a realistic matter that UTK is going to continue to have an SEC-oriented sports program over time,” Bredesen said last week. “But I think they clearly have some cleaning up to do in the program. I’m hoping that will happen.”

The 2009 frosh and soon to be 2010 frosh like that Jawan James kid and others, must feel like they were played. You know, most of these kids come in thinking about “The League in three years and I’ll bail” Now they know how it feels to be bailed on. Hillarious this is to me. Got punked they did. .

Well, um they got first hand exposure to L-I-F-E. Welcome aboard men. If you comitted to UT, then you are happy right? If not, you screwed up. Good lesson at 18 or 19. Make the best out of it. You are stuck with Rocky Top. The UT basketballers will simply be making little rocks out of big rocks and that is another story for another time. No Rocky Top for them ……..only rocks.

Tech’s Paul Johnson will be begging UT for the job. You heard it here first. O’Leary II is around the corner. Hmm, I wonder if CPJ actually has a college degree??? HAHAHAHAHAHAH 30-24 and UT , we will see you and your NEW ( Again ) coach in Athens. We look forward to it.

I think the kids that bought in a year ago are the real losers in this situation. Thier coach can leave without any penalty, but they have to sit out a year if they leave? With the college football trends of coaches leaving/getting fired every 2-4 years, I think this needs to be revisited by the NCAA. Perhaps change the rule to state a kid can transfer to different schools if his coach leaves or is fired except to the new school of his former coach.

If Smart is offered, then the morons htat bad mouther Mark Richt will look dumber than they are. Coaches hear things and I expect that UT will JUMP ALL OVER Kirby and pay him tons of money, as Alabama IS their number 1 and number 2 and number 3 rival. Not Florida and not UGA.

When Mike Shula stepped up to the mike as Alabama’s Head Football Coach, within 30 seconds most knew he was in over his head. It was uncomfortable to watch. Well, the same was true of Kiffin. The UT job was bigger than Kiffin, deserved better than Kiffin and it was painful to watch the UT people make excuses for Kiffin while he continually embarrassed your program and your tradition. Hell, I’m an Alabama fan and even I know UT made a deal with the devil and got what the devil is best known for…a bunch of lies. UT ponied up the money for Kiffin, Kiffin’s dad, Kiffin’s brother in law and many other “Kiffins”. The total amount of money spent for all the Kiffins exceeded the individual salaries of Meyer, Saban, Brown, Stoops and Kiffin’s idol, Pete Carroll. Personally, I’m glad he’s gone and I hope Kippy Brown ends up as your coach. He’s a loyal UT man and a good coach. Lane Kiffin can’t hold Kip’s jock.

Tennessee a better coaching job than Southern California?

Are you kidding me?

While Tennessee is a national power – SC is royalty (Ohio State, Texas, Notre Dame, Alabama, Michigan)
SC is Alabama on the West Coast.

Let’s compare:
Overall win % -SC #8 @ .706 TN #10 @.692 – pretty close
Bowl games played – SC – 48, TN 48 – even
bowl game win % – SC 32-16 = .667, TN 25-23 = .520 – sc
NATIONAL TITLES – SC 10 – TN – 4
TOTAL CONF TITLES – SC 38 (25 PAC10), TN 16 (13 SEC).

A good arguement that SC has more conf titles as they play in a conference not nearly as deep as SEC. Still – TN football is a great gig – SC is royalty.

This is a good move for Kiffin – but a great move for Tennessee. Vols got used.

Kiffin is a embarassment to the profession. Maybe Al Davis is not as crazy as we all thought? Kiffin would have brought UT major scandal and probation (still may happen). Tenn is better off with him. He is a constant joke in football circles and has no respect for anyone. However, I can see why he went back to USC. it is home for him and a step up the ladde. I am sure he thinks it is the pinnacle of college coaching. He did give his word to the Vol nation and he broke it. Ohio State Fan, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Monte, as respected as he is in the profession, should have taught his son a lesson in loyalty and also in common sense. His secondary violations at UT will pale in comparison to the mess he’ll be in at USC. Daddy will follow only because…….he’s daddy. He’s probably still wiping his pathetic ass. It’s obvious.

USC is the Best job in AMERICA, we’re gonna change out those Billboards and comeback to the ATL in a few weeks to sweep up some more recruits. And we did a Heck of a Job, and you know 14 months ago we set up some goals and we achieved them…so we’re moving on (which was one of the goals) to make more money, set up goals and you know…achieve them.

Peyton Manning, now he was pretty good, but he’s no Brice Brown…maybe Reggie Bush was pretty good…I’m the NFL Pipeline, and I tell kids that it doesn’t matter where I coach they just follow me and I’ll get them to the NFL …my super record of 12-21 as HC speaks for itself (With my my narration of course)…don;t blame them…VOLS made me rich.

USC is a much better job than UT—more tradition, money, better facilities, location, recruits begging to come to school there, etc. Tennessee isn’t nationally relevant—-USC is, every year. There’s no comparison. Lane K made a good career decision–he doesn’t really deserve the job, but because of his daddy’s name and exposure in the news all the time, USC wanted a name who used to coach there, after they got turned down by riley, del rio, sarkasian, OJ, etc.

Kippy Brown is the interim head coach for the Tennessee vols.

Mike Hamilton, vols’ AD, you are a joke, have been, and continue to be.

And, what is this that the students in Knoxville started a fire to keep Lame Kitten in Knoxville by leaving their trailers to burn their mattresses ? Hillbillies.

Please come back in here and put a spin on this vols’ fans.

I can’t wait.

Tell us all again of your moral victories ?

Lame Kitten 7-6 one season who beat no Final AP Poll or USA Today Coaches’ Poll Top 25 team, gone. When he was at USC, he was NEVER the Offensive Coordinator. That was 2 other guys, both now gone. Norm Chow UCLA now who was then replaced by Steve Sarkisian who left after last year to Washington. He was their assistant and he grinded on the players, other coaches, and media the whole entire time at Southern California and all the other places he stayed for a year thereafter, too. An impetuous impatient child smart-aleck know-it-all Spoiled Brat, and a huge big loose cannon who will step in at USC for all their NCAA Major Violations including Reggie Bush’s Court Trial which finally comes up with Sworn Statements finally now. And, the added issue of now not only Reggie Bush’s Mansion provided to his entire family under market value, but now too yet the rift between Pete Carroll and USC AD Mike Garrett over tailback Joe McKnight’s illegal use now of a vehicle not in his name. A Land Rover. At least at USC, it’s a Mansion and a Land Rover. Nice perks. Lame Kitten will fit right in there. These NCAA sanctions will happen this year. Why did Pete Carroll leave for a lousy Seattle team when he is failed as an NFL Coach at New England and the Jets 33-31 record ?

Lame Kitten Fresno State Quarterback who NO ONE LIKES, who NEVER was the Offensive Coordinator at USC. Never. Pete Carroll was the Defensive Coordinator, make no mistake of that, just like Nick Saban. At UGA, all we have is a damn CEO whose only job responsibility anymore is to hire a “coaching staff” which he has been totally miserable at doing for 10 years now this season.

Coach Richt Era 17-19 vs. Final AP Poll Top 25 teams in 9 years plus another 8 Losses to teams not even ranked in the Final AP Poll Top 25, including David Greene 8-9 vs. LSU, Florida, vols, and Auburn. David Greene was 9-8 vs Final AP Poll Top 25 teams but dropped 2 games Losses to teams not even ranked in the Final AP Poll Top 25.

It’s NOT like we are something great s c dawg.

And, the problem is and has been the “coaching staff” all hired by Coach Richt including his first hire of Rodney Garner December 20, 2000. Brian VanGorder’s Falcons defense sucks. No coach with any NFL experience not 1 coach 1 day. Losing record against Final AP Poll Top 25. The real teams we played each of 9 years now. Only 3 wins against teams in the Top 10 of the Final AP Poll Top 25 in 9 years, and only 1 of those is David Greene. His 1st win which he never duplicated. The offensive woes of this Coach Richt Era are Legendary for all 9 years. Even the 2 years we did play Knowshon Moreno and not redshirt him again that year, we handed him the ball 13 times only in loss after loss after loss. Then, we actually run the ball against GA tek and low and behold, we win a game – so we KEEP Mike Bobo. I’m sorry Willie Martinez and Jon Fabris are hardly all our issues on this “coaching staff.” Which 1 is in charge of the 121 suspensions/arrests in 9 years now of the Coach Richt Era ? Who teaches a position as position coach who actually played that position as a damn player ? No one. Who is in charge of kick-offs and returns ?

vols of course, should have kept Chief. I tried to tell them that. I tried to tell Coach Richt to snap him up then too.

s c dawg, though no so damn much more about all this than all of us and than God Above.

By the way, like UGA’s DC, Lame Kitten was Choice Number 4 at USC who finally settled on Lame Kitten after 3 whiffs. It is no better for him than it is for whomever Coach Richt gets off his butt and hires as his 4th Choice.

Don’t let the trailer trash door hit you on the backside on the way out Lame Kitten, you failure.

Granddad Monte Kiffin, Defensive Coordinator, gone.

Ed Orgeron, Recruiting Coordinator, gone.

After all you said in here about how great Lame Kitten is, please put a spin on this for me vols’ fans. I eagerly await your B.S. now about Lame Kitten’s FAILURES, totally after all your attempted DEFENSE of him HERE.

Go ahead. Defend him again, or make an about-face and agree with me all along that the jerk Lame Kitten is a sorry NOTHING of a Coach and person. How is his entire only recruiting class, put in jail over armed robbery, drugs, alcohol, and weapons charges, doing ? Been by to see them at the jail, or are you waiting to leave your trailer only to burn your mattresses to keep Lame Kitten there. God Almighty.

I don’t care that you obviously now will end up with a better coach; I just want you to admit The Spoiled Brat Little Monster is gone and that you burned your mattresses to keep him there you Hillbillies – along with the fact that I told you so, and you DEFENDED Lame Kitten : Choose : Defend him AGAIN, Admit I was right all along. Where is his win like our win over GA tek ?

Come on, Tony, the USC job is a better job by any and every measure. It’s simple, the top 3 jobs in CF for the foreseeable future are (in no particular order) USC, Texas, and Florida. Recruiting is the name of the game in college, and those 3 schools are the big dog in their respective states, which happen to be the most talent-rich states in the country.

Kiffin is a scumbag, but I don’t blame him for taking the job, and I think think he will be wildly successful at USC. Not because of any great coaching ability on his part, but the reality of being able to pick and choose 5 star recruits from Southern California and around the country, which is what USC can do.

Yet look at Tenn., Kiffin quits two weeks before signing day, and Florida, Meyer has a nervous breakdown and we dont know if he will be back. Rich Brooks retires too. It’s funny how you can say this is bad for college football but things like the NCAA allowing the corrupt BCS to still be around is OK. It’s OK to for conferences to steal teams from other conferences so they can have enough teams to put on the multi million dollar champtionship games. Kiffin had a clause that allowed him to leave for certain jobs and USC was one of them, Tenn probably never expected Pete Carroll to leave but he did.

Tony, You mention Cutcliffe at Duke. Isn’t that the same thing, a bigger program stealing from a smaller fish? And for all you Tenn fans, yes USC is bigger on the food chain than Tenn.

“Maybe I didn’t want to admit that I made a mistake … to be quite frank with you, I’m firing him for cause now, I’m not firing him for anything else other than cause. …

I reached a point where I felt the whole staff, we were fractionalized … that the best thing to do … was to make a change. It hurts because I picked the guy. I picked the wrong guy. This is regretful, but I thought it was best for the Raiders. And I wanted to make it work, because I want the Raiders to do great. Someone said to me the other day, a newspaper man, ‘Why don’t you tell us your side of the story? Why don’t you tell us what’s happening?’ And I said to him, look, I don’t want to win in the press, I want to win on the field”

“Over the past months you have made a number of public statements that were highly critical and designed to embarrass and discredit the organization its players and coaches. I left you alone during training camp, the implication when you were doing these things, in the hopes you would cease your immature and destructive campaign. I wanted to make this work. …

Your actions are those of a coach looking to make excuses for not winning, rather than of a coach focused on winning. “

Tony,
Your southern bias is shining through in this article. If you are to be taken seriously on the national stage, you have to put your southern bias to the side. Tennessee is not a better job than USC. Neither is UGA, LSU, or Auburn. I would say the only job that is on par with USC on a national stage is Florida, unfortunately. California is loaded with talent just like the state of Florida, the Pac-10 is much easier to navigate than the SEC, and they can pretty much get any 5 star recruit they want, west of the Mississippi. USC is almost like coaching an NFL team. Los Angeles is the second largest city in the U.S. and they dont’ have a pro team. Their tradition might not be on par with UT , but USC is definitely a better job.

As much as the Tennessee faithful tried to embrace him and time and time defend him, I don’t think Kiffin really ever embraced them. They seemed to “have his back” but he ended up stabbing theirs. He and his brash personality and his movie star looking wife, who by the way seems like a very nice person, just didn’t seem to quite fit the Knoxville scene. I am sure that they couldn’t wait to get back to the much more glamorous West Coast. I guess the thing that absolutely amazes me the most is the fact that this guy has NEVER shown that he’s a accomplished success and yet he keeps getting these plum jobs!! OK, yes, he can assemble an “all star” coaching staff (with daddy included) and his guys can recruit well enough, but when it comes down to the bottom line of wins and losses…Where’s the beef??? Now he has left Oakland and UT in shambles, which neither one will recover from real soon. Yet, what happens?? One of the super elite programs in all of college football comes calling!? Give him some credit, he must be a hell of a salesman!!! This guy could make $$$$$ on Wall Street. Tennessee now needs to forget the “glamour” hire and go get a real coach, one who will truly appreciate the program and not see it as a potential stepping stone. And one who will fit in and truly embrace the Vol faithful.

“Simply not a better job?”

SC Rules has it right – Tennessee is a second tier program in the SEC while USC has at least as much tradition as any school in the SEC, a very successful past decade on the field, and definiite recruiting advantages. Not to mention living in Los Angeles has, shall we say, an arguable appeal over the bright lights and urban sophistication of eastern Tennessee.

Only a SEC homer would contend SC is not a beter job – I expect better from Tony but you never know when regional biases will be revealed

Tennessee wanted John Gruden last year, but he was not ready to leave his job — contract obligations, you know…

Cutcliffe would be a good hire. I can’t see Phil coming back. USC is a great job for 4 or 5 years every other decade. At the moment, they are mediocre and moving in the wrong direction. Neither TN nor USC is a very HC good job right now.

Kiffin can take this job for a couple of years and then retire from coaching with a very nice nest-egg. He’s never going to be a successful HC — his record proves it. He’s just a placeholder. Lane was fortunate to be offered the job prior to being fired from TN. USC was fortunate to find ANYONE to take their HC job under the current circumstances.

One of the first reactions I had last night was of lacking continuity Atop Rocky. The 2010 Sr class may have 4 different OC’s in their 4 year stint. That’s going back into CPF’s day. Would I want CPF back..? Double he11 no..! Am I po’ed with CLK’s departure..? No. I like CLK. I liked his energy and his passion. The team loved playing for him and he was getting a bit of swag going Atop Rocky. He was left with a mess and a lack of depth from the CPF Era and did his best to re-energize the program by recruiting pretty darn well and utilizing what was available. He was given an opportunity after a 1 year stint at Knoxville to return to his basic roots and for that I fault him not. The USC HC’ing job is considered the Holy Grail to many in the HC’ing world. Yeah, bigger than Notre Dame. As for AD Mike Hamilton, I wish CLK would take him along to California and lose him somewhere along the tracks.

To the Tennessee fanbase that are joining in the fray today of CLK bashing, stop. It’s a real honest to gosh embarrassment to associate with those that have doing so for the past year. Either you’re with US and the TEAM or you’re not…Go Vols

I have to agree with some others here, Tony: USC is a better job than Tenn. Spare me the “SEC” argument, because Tennessee’s recruiting obstacles (i.e., not exactly a hotbed of recruits) are well-documented and the Vols in their best year are but one of 6 “traditional powers,” whatever that means, in the SEC (UF, UGA, UT, LSU, ALA, AUB). USC is a traditional power nationally, located in a hot-bed of recruits, and 1 of 2 (3?) traditional powers in the PAC10 (UW, UCLA; ORE is a recent thing). Success at Tennessee, while a great job no doubt, has always been fleeting, same argument as put forth re: Brian Kelly and Cincy.

Moreover, how is the argument for prying Cutcliffe away from Duke any different than USC calling Kiffin? Did the Duke players who Cutcliffe has recruited to help turnaround one of the least successful programs in FBS not “buy in” to Cutcliffe the same as the Tennessee players did for Kiffin? But it is okay for Tennessee to hire him after a year or two, just not for Kiffin to leave for the job he was a natural successor for? That is hypocritical, unless you believe the FBS aristocracy play by a different set of rules.

Meyer left Bowling Green and Utah after only a couple of years at each, Saban same to LSU and the Dolphins. No one had any illusions about them and what they were after … it just hurts when it happens to you, huh?

It is a bad day for college football because college football is no longer controlled by the colleges. When an assistant coach makes more than the governor of the state or the president of the university, there is a cancer that needs to be cut out, chauvanistic win at any cost mobs be damned. The SEC is the worst of the lot in this whole mess. Where has integrity, loyalty and honor gone?? It is long past time for the presidents, through the NCAA, to take sports (college) back from the big money interests and let the players be students, not year round lackeys of a bunch of overpaid coaches. Remember that the judge in Georgia just ruled that the athletic department could not be sued because it was under the state government. So don’t give me that “market forces junk”.

USC is a much better job than UT:

1. Better HS recruiting base – Tennessee recruits nation-wide.

2. More national exposure – NCAA investigations will do that for you.

3. Easier road to conference title – No argument with that.

4. Easier road to BCS title – This is not last decade. When was the last time USC competed for a NC?

5. Better weather – Sure.

6. Better looking women – Not so sure about that one. Have you actually ever been to TN?

7. An airport – Right… but TN has some fancy horse-drawn carriages.

8. Fans have teeth – But, like the breasts, they’re fake.

9. Fans don’t wear overalls – No. They wear pink boas.

10. No possum stew at booster club functions – Chinatown can top that one.

11. No snuff juice – Can’t argue with that. ;-)

12. No annoying Rocky Top music – Okay… I’ll give you that one.

USC doesn’t have that issue – though everyone looks to CA for the top recruits, USC is the only premier program in the area.

1. So, Tony thinks Kiffin used Tenn “in the worst possible way.”

How about when Steve Spurrier recently AND VERY PUBLICLY threatened to quit USC-East if the USC didnt significantly LOWER the academic standards for football recruits?
I guess Tony doesnt read ALL the news around the SEC and college football.

2. “USC is simply not a better job.” Uh, OK. What ever you say, “Mr. College Football.”

I think that USC is just using him as a name coach since they know NCAA sanctions are coming. As soon as those are lifted and Kiffin coaches the worst USC teams in recent history, they’ll fire him and hire a better coach.

That’s where it begins and ends for me but in your case, you really need to study the facts on his time with Oakland… Be not mystified. I am disappointed in his departure from Tennessee. The team loved him and the fanbase appreciated his ability to get the most out of what CPF left him. He steps into a program at USC player-wise similar to what Meyer and Saban had when they arrived in their current positions. A far cry from what CPF left. Just a couple thoughts…. The Vols took a chance on a very young coach and embraced him even though he got off on the wrong foot in many ways. Some level of loyalty on his part would appear to be in order. On the other hand, he is returning to his own kind where his attitude and personality will mesh with the rest. While the S.E.C. is the greatest conference with intense rivals in all our surrounding states, I will look beyond that fact and wish U.T. the best as they deal with this present situation. Will TN be better off without Kiffen? Without a doubt. His actions however shine a spotlight on the sesspool college athletics have become. Drunk with outragious media revenue, intstitutions, conferences and the NCCA continue to fuel an unabated arms race of inflated coaches salaries, Ritz Carlton athletics complexes and incesant pampering of over hyped high school kids. The days of my collegiate athletics experience are long gone – and with it the illusion that commitment and loyalty meant something in this society. Collegiate athletics needs a wake up call and a reality check – in the end maybe Kiffen did us all a favor.

I have to ask why you don’t consider USC a better job than UT? The recruiting is easy, the media scrutiny less severe, and you’re instantly at the top of your conference and in the national title picture just about every year, instead of having to claw your way up past Florida and Georgia and the other USC just to win your division, plus Bama on the schedule every year and a conference championship game to get past. If your goal is national accolades and national titles, USC makes so much more sense. Even if NCAA probation comes along, they have enough depth to weather through it.

The advantage UT has over USC is fan passion. So this definitely hurts. (Not sure how many matresses were burned in LA over Carroll’s departure.) Cutcliffe is an intriguing idea for a replacement.

DawgInTheHouse, FYI Gruden rejected the Washington Redskin’s job which is 10 times better than any college HC job. beside Georgia got their DC already, Brian Van Gorden turn out to be very interested in the job along with the cowboy’s DL coach. Im with Richt take as much time as you want as long as you get us the best coach, quality over quantity and I have no problem for not signing one already so patience and pursuing for the right guy will pay dividends. and Bradly and Scultz both can go to hell! both are Idiots! trying to create stories from nothing. Pushing Richt to hire some crappy coach in order to bring material for their stories. Coach take as much time as you wish.

Kiffin was a time bomb that in time would have kicked some butt..

I thought that his style was somewhat rough but also refreshing in the dull world of College FB and Slives and Mike Adams.

.. Especially in the SEC.. Mark Richt is not exactly Mr. Excitement. I had rather watch paint dry than listen to Richt. Excitement is not exactly the Coach at Auburn, UK, MSU, Vandy etc…

Kiffin was a walking headline.. I kind of liked the guy.. He provided energy to the conference much like a Deon Sanders or Andre Agassi.

Good luck Kiffy.. That one year was fun. LA is a great town.

Perhaps you should go back to making snide little comments about how your player broke the UCLA QBs jaw like you did early in the season,, remember “jaw breaker Rogan??” There’s NOTHING classy about those kind of comments. Also, you refer to Kiffin’s 7-6 record with the Vols almost like ot has become an acceptable standard for UT. That is truly sad. Oh, how the once mighty have fallen…

RHR, USC will be fine if Norm Chow comes back as OC as has been rumored. Monte will run the defense. Lane will be the CEO and speaker at the press conf/recruiter with Ed O. IF you can get away with breaking rules that is a top level recruiting staff. I’m glad Lane is out of the SEC but having him at USC with that staff just made it harder for everyone in the country to get to the BCS title game.

If USC does not get put under probation they are in a BCS title game in the next 3yrs assuming Chow is at USC.

Please, God, let the NCAA drop a bomb on USC. Yes, I do understand that Lane’s antics at UT play no role directly in the USC hearing in February — but the Committee on Infractions leaves wide latitude for discretion. They utilized that for Indiana’s basketball program when they determined that the program “already had suffered considerably” and issued only mild sanctions. They can utilize it again if they determine that USC really and truly regards itself as an organization that can play by its own rules. Please, please, please — hammer them.

A week ago, I wrote that the Vols had issues in their Athletic Department. Between NCAA investigations, numerous arrest of both football and basketball players on felony charges, and the prostitution ring run in Knoxville, things could not have gotten much worse. Uh… they just got worse. This reflects very poorly on the school, the president of UT and the AD. They get paid a lot of money to make sure things like this don’t happen, but they are happening – a lot. As a Dawg grad, I guess I could delight in it, but it is bad for the SEC and bad for college football.

I remember a Tech friend telling me, “enjoy it while it lasts, because that guy is trouble.” Sure enough, we got what was coming to us, and were hammered even harder because of Harrick’s history at UCLA. I cannot see how anyone (outside of a person with a lot of orange in their wardrobe) thinks UT is a better job than USC. We are talking Southern Cal, not South Carolina.

Someone said USC gets 5 star recruits and wins. Carroll got them because he was a good recruiter (along with his staff). However, if USC goes south in terms of winning, the recruits will not come. Those with short memories might forget that USC had a horrible run between Robinson’s first go around and the arrival of Carroll. It can happen at any program. NCAA sanctions will speed that up.

As for enforcing a contract, I read that Kiffin had specific language that allowed him to leave if the USC job came open. Also, the contract is between the university and the coach, not the coach and the NCAA.

I do think that if a coach leaves or is fired that the players should be allowed to transfer without having to sit out. Signees should also be released if those things happen as well. The scholarship (funny that it has “scholar” in there) is really a 1 yr contract. It must be pretty tightly written.

Of course, I also think that players should be eligible for the NFL draft any time they want, but that is an NFL rule (and upheld for some strange reason by SCOTUS).

I guess we’ll just have to agree to disagree, Tony, on whether being head coach at USC is a better job than Tennessee. I think it is a much better situation. They had a down year this season, but year-in, year-out for the last several years they’ve been a very strong team…without having to play through an SEC-caliber schedule. If Pete Carroll left an impending sledge-hammer that’s about to fall heavily on the program…as it sure looks like he did…then that’ll have to be endured, and will certainly affect the status of the job.
Tell you one thing, though: If Ed Orgeron really was on the phone with UT commitments, offering them scholarships at USC (as reports are he was), then USC should be required to reimburse Tennessee for any recruiting expenses. I know that a verbal commitment is not an iron-clad thing, and a recruit is not “officially” committed until he signs the scholarship…but still. I’m a Dawg fan, and don’t care much for Tennessee, but the UT athletic department should not have to pay for a disloyal group of coaches recruiting players to ANOTHER school.

As a Gator, the only coach that I really fear going there would be Will Muschamp. He was great when he was in the SEC and would be great at UT. A young agressive coach would be tough for the whole SEC east to handle as well as Saban whom Muschamp has firsthand knowledge of.

Let’s not pay those players, though. College football is all about integrity. The White Skin Privilege club members, like Kiffin, do things for above board reasons- we can’t give $300/month to those players of color, right?

Barnhart has lost his mind if he thinks that the USC job is not better than the Tennessee job. The USC job is better by every single measure in terms of on the field performance (more NCs, wins, conf championships, Heismans, everything…). Much better school academically. On top of that, USC has a much larger, more fertile recruiting area with less competition from the Meyers and Sabans.

Both jobs have there pluses and minuses; it depends on what kind of lifesyle you like. Me personally, I would prefer Knoxville ( cant believe I am saying it) to living in SoCal for the same reasons I moved from Central Florida to NE Georgia.

The best coach for Tennessee is Mike Leach. His offense would create problems for other SEC teams. The Vols ought to get Mike Leach and Jon Tenuta.

How about Mike Leach as HC, Jim Levitt as DC and Mark Mangino as OC. Most teams already run a variation of some type of spread except for Bama which if you have the horses (and Bama did) is still the best.

Neyland…What do you think about Orgeron calling your recruits right in the players meeting, including THE ONES ON CAMPUS(!) to try to get them to switch their commitment to USC. I heard alot of the players wern’t exactly happy about it. Good for them! Surely your boy Kiffin had knowledge of this, hell he was right there. Yep, that’s your guy and Orgerons right there with him. Two peas in a pod. Can you say I-N-T-E-G-R-I-T-Y?? I can tell you this…if that had happened at UF, the campus police would be escorting those coaches right to the airport, tasers on ready (haha). and Ol Kiffey boy would have really been screaming “don’t tase me bro”!!

So let me get this straight, Kiffin was offered a higher paying job and took it, but he’s somehow a villian? Look, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with Kiffin bailing on Tennessee. If you think there is, imagine working for a company for 5 days, then being offered a 25% raise by another company in the same industry. Would you take more than a second to bolt? I doubt it.

While fans are loyal to colors like white and gold, or orange and blue, employees (like Kiffin) are loyal to one color, green. The company that offers more green is going to be more attractive every time. If Tennessee wants to keep Kiffin, they could add another half million to USC’s offer, and he’d probobly take it. There’s nothing decitful about it. Everyone with a job is always looking to make more money. Kiffin cares more about his salary than UT’s football team, as he very well should.

Have been up to Knoxville on two occasions for ball games (including 1998 game, you rmember that yr don’t you??) and have always been impressed by the passion of Tenn fans and the traditions. People were very nice, even to a Gator!Got a chance to meet Bruce Pearl and talk with him for just a minute during the SEC Basketball Tourney down here in Tampa last year and he is a great guy! Ideally you have these people getting into the coaching profession becuase they want to help groom young men into better people. Along with that comes the recruiting speeches and trying to convince students to come give their all for you. I don’t disagree with leaving but the manner in which he did his job and left it before he could build something is what makes it deceitfull. While it is a business it really shouldn’t be all about the business side of it. That said, one bad season at Tennessee and they run off all their legends. It couldn’t have happened to a better university.

The reality is Kiffen and staff were phenomenal recruiters but lackluster game coaches. Their offensive and defensive scheme against VA Tech was pop warner grade. No imagination or risk taking that you would associate with a young coach (think Boise State). Papa Kiffen obviously took December off. If we can hire soeone in the next few days, there will be little impact. If we wait 2-3 weeks, it will be a Fulmer class over again (22nd). Net, good riddance to the pin-head and his pin-head staff. We will miss his pin-up spouse, however!

USC is a better job than Tennessee. More tradition and Success(more National Championships, Heisman Trophy winners). And no question a better location! Cmon Socal or East Tennessee? I see a lot of SEC spin in this piece. It was his dream job, the timing is bad but you can’t blame him. I agree that Cutliffe deserves better but Fulmer doesn’t. In case you forgot or didn’t know, Fulmer stabbed Johnny Majors in the back to get the job in the first place. And, when Bama boosters outbid UT boosters for Albert Means, Fulmer turned double-top-secret witness against the NCAA against Bama. Forgive my lack of compassion but when a program like Tennessee shows nothing but public support for a guy who is obvioulsy loose with the rules, in no way is a role model to these players, and publically draws inappropriate attention to himself, well, I just see this as getting what is deserved. Bruce Pearl is hauntingly similar. Maybe its time to get a coach in Knoxville who will represent the team, the University, and the state in a honorable way and teach these young men to carry themselves with dignity and let their actions speak for themselves. You can say whatever you want about Hamilton but you’re not a good guy if you embrace the likes of Lane Kiffen. It’s like sleeping with a hooker. Cleaning up the mess afterwards makes you question whether it was worthwhile.

That Lane Kiffin, with all those antics, got tired of banjo music and the pressure of having to follow up after his mouth, is now bolting for home, to me seems like we should’ve seen it coming.

We can argue all day about whether UT or USC is the better job. I think it’s USC. Kiffin is a jerk, no doubt, but in the long run UT will be better off. Kiffin is a much better fit at USC than he would ever be at UT. The problem for UT now is,any coach who leaves their current job for UT is not unlike Kiffin, bailing out at the last minute. The possible exception might be Cutcliffe who has strong ties to UT. He might be able to make the move without too much bad PR, especially since Duke is not a powerhouse program. Certainly the Duke students have too much class to be burning mattresses, shouting obscenities, and threatening the coach.

Seriously, I believe the Vol fans will have the last, and loudest, laugh. I believe UT will be willing to pay BIG bucks to get a more stable leader for their program. Cutcliffe is too safe. But some of the bigger name coordinators (Muschamp, Smart in particular) will be lured with a package that could easily triple or quadruple their salaries. There’s a lot less desirable positions than to be heading up a solid program in the strongest conference in college football and making $3-4 million per year.

I also believe that USC is getting the coach they deserve. They’ve played fast and loose with the rules for way too long. Born2Buzz, Fulmer had 1 bad season? lol I’ll assume you are a GT fan from Buzz in your screenname and that just goes to show how far standards have fallen on the flats.

USC is an easier job, more talent, easier path to BCS bowls.

Muschamp going to Tenn? It depends on how much $$ is offered. Texas has the same advantages as USC.

Tenn. has to play Bama and UF EVERY year and then UGA with talent that is recruited in from outside Tennessee. UT isn’t an easy job.

Otto

As for UT they did get what they deserved. UT had cheap buyout. If you want to keep a coach pay him well and demand a large buy out.

Lane did what any American should do. He went after his dream job and made more money doing it.

Which is worse leaving before the bowl game, after 1 season, or with 3 week to go before signing day?

If you leave at any time the media such as Schultz and Mark will jump on you for leaving these kids who “bought in” at any point in the season.

* If Vol fans think Kiffin was so bad, then why are they all crying like babies? You would instead simple post “Great, Kiffin left now we can get a real winner in here”. You would be happy not mad.

* You dump your last coach and got dumped back. Tennesse is no saint. Kiffin is not saint. Neither is any of the rest of us. Saban? Do we have to go over that again? Please. It’s a business not a marriage. Boo hoo. Grow up.

* SC gets sanctions? So what. We at Bama went through them. So do nearly all majors that are successful. They’ll get through it and come out the backend at the top again. Wishing them on then is bad karma kiddies.Sc and their fans don’t even know Tenn exists. They could care less.

* USC is consider by all the better job except Vol homers and the author of this blog. LOL. What’s next, Buffalo Bills job the same as the Dallas Cowboys?

* Kiffin will fail you state. Then bet all your savings against SC and you will retire. Right? Didn’t think you believed it either. LOL. NCAAF starts and ends with recruiting, and SC has that is spades. Two top asst. coaches added in. Guy is 80% home no matter that he is untested. The SC fans will give him three years give or take a sanc. year. Then no top 2-3 finished and they will fry him. That’s his real hot seat, ask Weiss what that does for the old ulcer.

Oh, and to top it all off

– some of the coaches names brought up for Tenn have only been at their school one year
– would be leaving just as recruiting ends and signing starts for their schools
– have some pretty shakey pasts etc.
– would be “screwing” their fanbase

All sound like something we have heard before? Yeah. It’s okay to stick it to someone else, “steal” their coach, or turn a blind eye when it suits you.
