Saban secures his place in Alabama history

Newport Beach, Calif.–On a plaza at the North end of Bryant-Denny Stadium are the statues of the coaches who have won national championships at Alabama: Wallace Wade, Frank Thomas, Gene Stallings, and, of course, Paul Bear Bryant.

When the plaza was built there was room left for a fifth statue in anticipation that someday, someone, would take Alabama back to its football glory.

After Alabama’s 37-21 victory over Texas in Thursday night’s BCS national championship game, it is a fair statement that a statue of Nick Saban will soon be filling that space.

“I haven’t thought about it but Terry (his wife) said something about it last night,” said Saban, who brought Alabama its national championship in only three years. “You hope that when you get into this profession that you can do something that leaves a mark, that will effect someone in a positive way in the future.”

The college football world reacted with shock and awe in Janaury of 2007 when Saban was hired away from the Miami Dolphins for the unheard of sum of $32 million over eight years.  But this morning, as Saban and athletic director Mal Moore came to pick up the national championship hardware, that deal struck three years ago looks like a bargain,

”You have to understand how special this is to the Alabama people,” said Moore, who laid the foundation for this moment by raising the money and building the facilities that made it possible for Saban to succeed. “To come here and win another national championship in the Rose Bowl is very significant to our people. This is just a great moment in the history of the University of Alabama.”

It was Moore decided that he would not take no for an answer when it came time to hire Saban. He had offered the job in West Virginia’s Rich Rodriguez and it appeared that he was coming to Tuscaloosa. Moore decided at that point that Alabama would do whatever it had to do to get Saban. He then convinced the the right people at Alabama that hiring Saban and making the financial commitment was absolutely necessary if the school wanted to return to national prominence in football.

There was much work to be done when Saban arrived in Tuscaloosa. But when over 92,000 packed Bryant-Denny Stadium for the first spring game, forcing fire marshalls to close the gates and leave thousands more outside, Saban knew that Alabama would eventually be successful.

“When I saw that kind of passion I knew that if we did our job as players and coaches that we had a very good chance to be successful,” he said. “When you have that kind of positive energy surrounding the program, you’re off to a really good start.”

Saban’s first Alabama team started fast but stumbled down the stretch to finish 7-6. In 2008 Alabama started 12-0 and rose to a No. 1 ranking. But a loss in the SEC championship game to Florida, which went on to win the national title, was followed by an inexplicable loss to Utah in the Sugar Bowl. Those disappointments provided all the motivational energy Saban would need to get the 2009 team ready for a run at the national championship.

“We were very clear with our players about what it would take and the commitment that would have to be made to be successful this season,” said Saban. “Our players bought into what we were selling.”

There were some tense moments this season. Terrence Cody had to block a field goal on the last play of the game to beat Tennessee 12-10 in October. Alabama had to drive the length of the field to beat Auburn on the day after Thanksgiving.

But when Alabama faced No. 1 Florida in the SEC championship game, Saban and his players and coaches had done their homework. They had been getting ready for that game since they lost in Atlanta the year before. Alabama just destroyed Florida.

In the BCS championship game Texas lost quarterback Colt McCoy early which certainly changed the game. Behind freshman quarterback Garrett Gilbert the Longhorns cut a 24-6 lead to 24-21 with about four minutes left.

But Alabama’s defense forced two late turnovers and made the game appear to be more lopsided than it really was.

Alabama’s team gets back to Tuscaloosa tonight and there will be a great celebration. And there will be plans to build that statue. But it won’t be long before thoughts turn to recruiting and the 2010 season.

Expect Alabama to be the preseason No. 1 with the talent the Crimson Tide has returning. Saban would have no part of that discussion.

”Every team is different and this team will have a lot of unanswered questions,” he said. “You guys (the media) will look at our top four or five players and figure we should be there (No. 1).”

Understand that Saban’s warning was not for the benefit of the assembled media. It was for the Alabama’s players who will be watching him on television. It is his warning to them that this offseason may be one of the toughest Alabama has ever had because it is much harder to win the second championship because you’re not as hungry.

Saban will make sure they are hungry. You can count on that. After all, he’s got a statue.

Yes, Saban is a good coach and has put himself up towards the top of the coaching elite, along with Urban Meyer and others (even though his career winning percentage isn’t as high as Urban’s).

Bama Stan,

“Tony – besides Bama – and this is way too early – who looks good coming into 2010?
Here is a list of teams (no particular order) that appear to be on a roll for 2010 – your thoughts?
Alabama, Nebraska, Ohio State, Penn State, Pittsburg, Miami,”

Penn St loses several key players including the QB. Nebraska loses several D players and the Shrubs, well who cares about them. Big deal they beat the birds this year to FINALLY WIN a BCS game!!

Bama has a ton of talent returning AS does Texas. It isn’t out the realm of possibilities that we might see our first “repeat” BCS NC matchup. SC will have plenty of top talent back from this sad sack of a year. The next couple months will tell whether we suffer the rath y’all have been prayin for for us these past several years.

Congrats to the Tide!!

Danny Forde,

You are too amusing. Bama wasn’t even the best in the west division you say? Mmm, No disrespect towards anybody else in the division but we won the division by 3 games. What are you smoking?

And then you say Boise and Tcu had no cupcakes on their schedules? Surely you jest. You are either really, really stupid or you are just delusional and believe the things you actually write. San Jose State is in Boise’s conference so Boise plays them you idiot. So I guess when Boise plays them they are not patsys but when Bama plays them they are patsys. Hard to argue your logic son. Other powerhouses in those 2 conferences; san diego state, New Mexico, UNLV, New mexico state, Colorado state, Utah State, nevada, Idaho. No cream puffs in those 2 conferences huh?

Keep blogging though. You are good comedic relief.

What it means:

Nobody cares about Tech’s final ranking. The ACC is weak, they lost to a 7-5 UGA team, and lost on a national to Iowa. Beat the Dawgs and win your BCS bowl, finish 13-1, and then come talk to us.

Bama fans: congrats. Saban is clearly the best coach in the SEC. With that being said, Bama is VERY lucky that Colt McCoy got hurt last night. And Texas’ defense played a great game. Texas lost the game because of 3 turnovers from a freshman QB who wasn’t expecting to play. In fact Texas shut down Bama’s offense for pretty much the second half until the last 2 min of the game when they got 2 turnovers. If McCoy was in that game, Bama might have lost.

So people thought that Bama was lucky cause Mccoy got hurt? Then I guess Texas was lucky when Heisman winner Sam Bradford got hurt in the 1st qtr of Texas’s 16-13 narrow win over OU. Injuries are part of the game and Greg McElroy played with 2 cracked ribs from the Florida game. Bottom line is that injuries are part of the game.

Yes I am tired of hearing people try to tarnish Bama’s win by saying Colt McCoy got hurt and could’nt play.It is not Alabama’s fault McCoy decided to run with the ball against a defense he knew from watching film that was very physical.I bet the Bama coaches told them to hit him hard if he takes off running with the ball to make him think twice about doing it again.Greg McElroy was playing with two cracked ribs and lets not forget Bama’s defense would be even better if Dante Hightower was playing who got injured early in the season.Bama faught threw adversity to get where they are with no excuses coming up big and making plays in order to win throughout the season.

Most teams that win championships have alittle luck down the stretch. But good teams make their own luck. That was a heck of a lick on McCoy. Give Bama credit for the lick. It really makes you appreciate Herschel Walker alot more knowing he played the Sugar Bowl in 80 with a separated shoulder.

jesse,

Agreed. Everyone who wins a national title gets a little luck or has a close call somewhere along the line. Even undefeated champions if we go back and look over the past 20 years had a game or 2 where some good fortune was involved or the team won a narrow, close game.

Denver Dog,

The Gilbert kid from Texas was indeed one helluva recruit. As I understand it he was the #1 rated qb coming out of high school and was both the gatorade national high school player of the year and also the parade magazine national player of the year. He obviously was put in a tough spot but he collected himself, made some great plays, and had his team rallying. Unbelievable for freshman thrown into a game like that. The kid has a bright future at Texas.

As for the last td I don’t think Saban was trying to run up the score. It was only a 10 pt game and since he’s been at Bama I’ve seen us take a knee inside the opponents 10 yard line multiple times and at least 3 times this season VT, Ole Miss, and one or 2 other teams we took knees down around the 5 or 10 just to end the game. Running up the score is simply not something he does.

Tide Rising,

You said, “Running up the score is simply not something he does.”

Except, apparently, in the National Championship game. Even his defensive players who intercepted the ball knew that all Bama had to do was run out the clock. They both dropped to the ground after intercepting. Then, the offense comes out trying to score.

I was pulling for Alabama and I’m glad they won, but I didn’t like them running up the score at the end. And, yes, Texas laid down on the last score.

Number 24 Peter Wolfe Official BCS Poll Final Ranking 24 UGA Bulldogs.

Number 24 Jeff Sagarin ELO-CHESS Rankings.

SAGARIN ALSO RANKS SEC # 1 CONFERENCE, Big East 2nd, then PAC-10.

Where is the STINKING ACC GA tek fans ? Jeff Sagarin RANKINGS.

Remember ?

3-4 ACC Bowl Record

2-5 PAC-10 Bowl Record

6-4 SEC Bowl Record including UGA Bowl Win number 26 three have more.

Big XII ? Not even a Winning Bowl Record.

ACC and Big XII had a LOSING BOWL RECORD coming into this season.

ACC and Big XII BOTH still have LOSING BOWL RECORD.

ACC added to it.

Coach Richt and Rodney Garner have PULLED the scholarship OFFER to B.J. Butler a 3-Star undersized 240 lbs. Defensive End who has 4.65 speed in the 40-yard dash. He has committed to Charlie Strong at Louisville.

This opens up a Scholarship Offer.

Give it to Mack Brown.

Starting 1997, Mike Bobo’s brilliant Senior Season, UGA had been ranked every year for 13 Consecutive Years in the Final AP Poll. We had not been ranked every year in the Final Coaches’ Poll. There were other polls we had not made the Top 25 of. Frankly, we have had several seriously flawed, underachieving, and greatly disappointing seasons since the day DJ Shockley graduated with Honors from UGA following the 2005 Season and SEC Championship.

We have messed up in Recruiting.

We have had serious holes, demanding 4 and 5-Star Commitments, and have failed miserably at filling those glaring obvious holes. We have done this while we have instead stockpiled our 85 Scholarships at positions were instead we were already 5 Deep.

Defensive Ends, for example.

Safety, for example.

Cornerbacks, for example.

Also, it appeared obvious that we would have to move stockpiled receivers to defensive backs and failed miserably on that as well.

And, we should have long ago not waited until recently, moved stockpiled linebackers to Defensive Ends.

Of course, Coach Richt has had a real problem in his decisions of coaches’ on his staff, surrounding himself with YES MEN, buddies, college roommates, and out-of-position position coaches with zero experience at the position Coach Richt put them in, and not one coach on his staff with 1 single solitary day of NFL Coaching Experience.

He still doesn’t have 1 single coach with NFL Coaching Experience.

Not 1.

We did not play Knowshon Moreno, instead redshirting him, and therefore only got to see the best running back in UGA history over the last 25 seasons, 2 years. Very sad decisions, all of these.

We did redshirt Washaun Ealey, and then three-quarters through Game 5, ripped the Redshirt OFF Washaun Ealey. Another blunder in personnel for a brain trust that frankly has had way too many of these.

But, we have played a very tough schedule, and as I predicted all along, we have ended up outside the Final AP Poll Top 25, and outside the Final USA Today Coaches’ Poll.

There is nothing that you can do about that.

Playing Texas A&M who ends with a losing record 6-7 on December 28 in the Bowl Number 11 of 35 bowls, is not going to get you ranked no matter the 44-20 obliteration. And frankly the losses to not 1 but 2 unranked 7-6 teams who otherwise would not have had a winning record for 2009-2010, Tennessee vols and Kentucky Wildcats, sealed our fate, despite the win over Number 13 GA tek.

This gave us SEVEN (7) LOSSES to teams NOT RANKED in the Final AP Poll Top 25 in the Coach Richt Era.

We have to cut that crap out.

BAD LOSSES. 7.

Frankly, you can add the LOSS to GA tek 2008 to that list of BAD LOSSES too, although they barely did end up in the Final AP Poll Top 25 in 2008. But, they would NOT have, had they not beat UGA in 2008.

But, it is quite clear that Coach Richt has 7 Losses to teams NOT RANKED in the Final AP Poll Top 25.

Kentucky and Tennessee vols both at 7-6 at no point this season were going to end up in the Final AP Poll Top 25. How do you lose to such teams who otherwise would not have even had a winning record. A study of both teams shows that NEITHER KY nor the vols BEAT ANYONE.

And, they beat Coach Richt.

Also :

7 LOSSES to teams NOT RANKED in Final AP Poll Top 25 Coach Richt Era.

18-20 against teams Ranked in the Final AP Poll Top 25 Coach Richt Era.

I don’t have to tell you these are NOT the results of an Elite Program with Top Broyles Award Type Coaching Staff in the Coach Richt Era.

9 years, you don’t have 7 Losses to UNRANKED Final AP Poll Top 25 teams.

9 years, you don’t have LOSING RECORD 18-20 vs Final AP Poll Top 25 teams.

Coach Richt Era.

You don’t have EITHER of these absolute facts, and be Elite.

Your Coaching STAFF in total is to blame.

Coach Richt has done a SORRY JOB of hiring a Coaching Staff for him to be CEO over.

None of his entire coaching staff have ever coached in the NFL 1 day.

We pay him enough money that he should either take back over making play call decisions, which is his only claim to fame and why we hired him, or he has to hire an ENTIRE COACHING STAFF made up of current NFL Coaches.

Do I mind if he hires a Defensive Backs’ Position Coach from the NFL and makes him the Defensive Coordinator ? Oh, I think that is exactly what he must do.

He whiffed on Chavis last season, when I told him he had to go get Chief.

He didn’t listen.

A lot of that is the blame of the other UGA Bulldog posters, who had all these wild nasty statements they wanted to make about Willie Martinez ALL LAST SEASON, when they could have instead, gone past that on to the SOLUTION.

And, you were not unified what you wanted.

Congratulations though.

By doing what you have been doing for several years now, harping on just only Willie Martinez, you got him FIRED.

Coach Richt’s college roommate Willie Martinez FIRED.

It was a tough choice for an SEC Head Football Coach, who has said for years, that he would NOT be making ANY changes on his staff.

I told him he could either make wholesale changes to his coaching staff, or he could leave with the lot of them.

I pointed out our issues on Offense.

I pointed out our issues on Recruiting.

I pointed out our issues on Special Teams.

I pointed out our issues at DE and Safety and Cornerbacks.

I pointed out our issues with well over 120 suspensions by Coach Richt in his 9 years.

You ?

Willie Martinez sucks. Fire Willie Martinez.

Congratulations.

You got what you wanted.

Moreover, the real issue remains that Coach Richt has surrounded himself with YES MEN, and has 0 with 1 day NFL Coaching Experience.

Excuse me, Coach Richt SUCKS at HIRING A COACHING STAFF.

He has sucked at it for 9 years and counting.

He SUCKS AT HIRING COACHES TODAY JANUARY 9, 2010.

3 WEEKS AND 1 DAY before NATIONAL SIGNING DAY.

No Defensive Coordinator.

No Defensive Backs Coach.

No Linebackers Coach.

No Special Teams Kick-Off Coach.

No Special Teams Kick-Off Return Coach.

No Special Teams Punt Return Coach.

We have a former UGA wide receiver whose dad was a great tailback for us as Running Back Coach.

We have a former running back at UTC Chattanooga who then became running backs’ coach at several places including South Carolina, who is our Wide Receivers’ Coach.

We have an Offensive Coordinator who has never worked anywhere but at UGA (except 1 year as QB coach at Jacksonville State) who has never held the position of Offensive Coordinator anywhere in his lifetime. His play calls are BOOED LOUDLY by Sanford Stadium fans all the time.

All the time.

He gets in 3rd and long and runs the ball.

We have a Tight Ends Coach who can’t figure out that Orson Charles is our Best Tight End. This Tight Ends Coach is in fact a former Quarterback. God Almighty is all I can say. What the hell does a freaking QB know about Tight Ends ?

OR ANY OF THESE OTHER ALL OUT OF POSITION COACHES ?

Not 1 of them has 1 day experience coaching in the NFL.

That’s it for Coach Richt’s Coaching Staff.

There isn’t anyone else.

THAT STAFF has taken the Number 7 Recruiting Class we, the fans of UGA Bulldogs, have handed them.

And gone :

18-20 vs the Final AP Poll Top 25 for 9 years now.

7 Losses to NOT RANKED teams in the Final AP Poll Top 25 for 9 years now.

Don’t give me this B.S. this CRAP that all we need is a Defensive Freaking Coordinator.

You GOOBERS are so enamored by the TIDE. It seems like everyday there is a story about Nick Saban and the Tide. WOW, you guys never got this much press for your own team.

Why all of the hating ? You will never see The Birmingham News give this kind of press to the DAWGS.

OH I am sorry, I apologize………………………………….You last won a NC in 1980. MY BAD.

You guys crack me up. So hilarious.

Each day I can almost see the hatred on the board from you GOOBERS. SAD to see isn’t. And for the GOOBERS that are stating our program was down before Saban came……………………………..You are actually right for a change. So what, we lost to LA. Monroe, kind of like your basketball team losing to WOFFORD and UAB, You see, you have more than one program that is in a SORRY STATE OF AFFAIRS.We are king of the mountain now. But, guess what, The Tide beat Miami in 1992 and we have 2 NC since you won your last 30 years ago.

You guys are the laughing stock of the SEC except for Vandy. I give Vandy a break because most of you work for VANDY GRADS. So funny, hilarious you guys are.

Well BuLLdawg, I can’t for the life of me figure out why Damon Evans hasn’t contacted you to run the program. Seems you, and a few others on here, know much more about college football than Coach Richt. Why are we wasting our time with him when we could have you? Give me a break. I love UGA. It is not however, a top five program year in year out. It has finished six times in the top ten in the last nine years. Be proud of Richt has accomplished and look for a stable, consistent, and occasionally a championship program as long as we’re fortunate enough to have him here. Congrats to Bama, great season. And to Colt McCoy, a class act and a great example of sportsmanship and faith!!!!!!!

SickandTired, just who do you propose this magical coach is that can give you gauranteed results. Trust in Richt and it will happen. How long did it take Dooley and would it have ever happened if not for Herschel? Relax and Go Dawgs!

BuLLdawg, since you have all the answers why don’t you turn in your resume to Richt. Since you appear to always be correct he obviously will see this and will hire you right away. You plus all those NFL coaches, who by the way, tend to love coming donw to the college level and we will have the highest paid, most talented coaches in the nation. It’s so simple, why doesn’t Damon Evans think of this stuff?
