Alabama championship fueled by 2008 disappointment

Pasadena, Calif.–There is no way to measure how devastated Alabama was in December of 2008. The Crimson Tide, who had not won a national championship since 1992, were 12-0, ranked No. 1, and had a shot at a national title in their sights.

But then came the loss to Florida in the SEC championship game which gave the Gators the shot at the BCS title, which they won. Then came the loss to Utah in the Sugar Bowl. For a team that was 12-2, there was a lot of heartache at Alabama.

That’s why Alabama’s 37-21 win over Texas, which gave the Crimson Tide yet another national championship, was so sweet.

“We have a group of dedicated players who bought in to what we tried to do this season,” said head coach Nick Saban, who became the first coach in the modern era to win national championships at two different schools (He won a national title at LSU in 2003). “They were determined to prepare every day to put themselves in this position. We have a great team at Alabama and it starts with our president and the commitment the school has made to be successful.”

Alabama will enjoy this championship for a little while and then there will be talk of next fall when the Crimson will surely be preseason No. 1.

“We will be good enough to win it again,” said running back Mark Ingram, who had 116 yards against the No. 1 defense against the run (62,.2 ypg). “But this team knew how to work. Next year we will have to work just as hard. Or maybe even harder.”

Big victory for ‘bama. No doubt Saban is a great coach who will have them competing next year as well. Wonder what will happen with Kirby Smart? Texas Tech, Georgia, or stay put? Gotta say that I felt bad for Colt getting a pinched nerve but that’s part of the game. Happy that the SEC kept the title at home.

Tony:

I am still impressed with your pick of OLE MISS over LSU. I think you are the only respectable sports columnist at the AJC. It would be O.K. to put UGA in your next years preseason top 20, especially since it is your Alma Mater. If Paul Johnson hits you in the face, I got your back! At least you will have an article left to write when UGA picks a ne DC. It is hard to beat College football.

If I hear another Big XII fan HYPE your lousy conference, I’ll PUKE.

Congratulations Alabama. SEC has Won The Golden Sombrero.

4 in a Row BCS NC Game Wins by The Mighty SEC.

Big XII in BCS National Championship Games is 2-5. (SEC 6-0.)

Who the hell do you think is better ?

3 of the Big XII 5 BCS NC Game LOSSES are head-to-head with SEC.

Including the LAST TWO (2) IN A ROW.

For the record, Texas could not stop Mark Ingram or Trent Richardson as both gained over 100 yards rushing.

Texas, on the other hand, in dire need of a running game, could not run at ALL against Alabama.

37-21.

Big XII vs SEC in Bowl Games 2009-2010 Season 0-3.

Big XII vs SEC in Bowl Games 2008-2009 Season 0-3.

If Mack Brown is worth $5 million a year, Coach Nick Saban is worth $15 million a year. Texas beat only 1 Final AP Poll Top 25 team, Nebraska. And, Nebraska has not beat a Final AP Poll Top 25 team all 4 years in which Suh played 54 games.

Alabama beat Number 9 Virginia Tech who beat Nebraska.

Alabama beat Number 2 Florida who beat Number 3 Cincinnati.

Alabama beat Number 4 Texas WHO BEAT NO ONE.

37-21.God Almighty Big XII.

Give it up Big XII with your 2-5 in the BCS NC Game to SEC now 6-0.

Go play someone. Beat them. Then, HYPE the hell out of your conference that you deserve to be in the BCS NC Game again.

The NC Game was The SEC Championship Game. 2 previous years ago, LSU was Number 1 and UGA Number 2 in the Final AP Poll. It will be the same for The SEC this season, Florida Number 2 and Alabama Number 1 in the Final AP Poll.

BEST CONFERENCE IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL ?

Give it a rest the rest of you LOSERS.

The Orange Bowl featuring Iowa and Georgia tek drew a 6.8 rating Tuesday night. This rating is better than the Orange’s last four ratings of ACC “BCS” Bowl Games.

The ACC has Won 1 Orange Bowl period since the 1996 Season Started.

Great ACC.

Give it the hell up.

The Fiesta Bowl drew an 8.2. . This game was between the Mountain West and the WAC.

ACC who had a LOSING RECORD in bowl games before this year, added to it with another LOSING RECORD in Bowl Games this year 3-4.

5 ACC teams did not even make a bowl game. ACC had contracts for more bowl games and had to give up their bowl games. Wonderful.

PAC-10 went 2-5 in Bowl Games for the worst performance.

SEC went 6-4 in Bowl Games for the Best Performance.

The Big XII went 4-4.

The Big East went 4-2.

The Big 10 went 4-3.

Duds of College Football ? ACC “conference.”

Followed very closely by the PAC-10.

Please note there have been 105 UGA Bulldog Football Players Graduate since December 2005.

UGA Bulldogs won 8 or more games 13 years in a row to lead the nation. Texas and Virginia Tech are tied for second place with 12 years of 8 plus wins a season. Both play in crappy butt conferences.

26-13-3 UGA Bulldogs in Bowl Games

26 Bowl Wins.

Only 3 teams have more : Alabama 32, Southern Cal 32 & Penn State 27.

38-4 non-conference Coach Richt Era.

90-27 overall Coach Richt Era 9 years.

RUSS ends his career UNDEFEATED 2-0 including beating GA tek.

Now they will go ahead and annoint alabammmer for the 2010 season and the SHAM will continue

And total hacks like Tony will continue to hype it.

This idiotic BSbcs system is destroying the greatest sport in history and results in a SHAM champ.

Hey “BuLLdawg”…The SEC is great as you detailed, but your Dawgs lost 5 times this year and your ego is showing way too much! Your Dawgs are not part of the SEC strength anymore…sorry, but 6 loses proves it ???
You guys have to step it back up and bragging about beating that weak GA Tech Team with a high school defense is not what you need to be bragging about. Did you beat anyone in the top 10 this year? You lost to the conference runner up 41-17! You need a reality check and your point is as boring as watching the dawgs try to run 2 plays in a row without a penalty.

Gee Tony, aka gatorhater, maybe this year’s loss will be so heartbreaking to the gators that it will motivate them to another NC next year? If heartbreak had anything to do with it then those dawgs would be three peat champs wouldn’t they? You sound as if bama should have won the game against UF and the Utes last year. The reason they didn’t is because they weren’t good enough! Just like the gators didn’t get it done this year. Hate to break it to you big guy, but the gators ain’t going away any time soon. Disappointing seasons to UF will be as the SEC Sugar bowl entrant.

Last nights game only proved to me more that a playoff is needed. Alabama beat a freshman quarterback who looked like he was looking in headlights. The boneheaded coaching staff at Texas gave Alabama the game with their call at the end of the first half, and yet Texas had the ball in their hand to win the game with 3 minutes left in the game. Alabama won but it makes me wonder if Alabama would have win in a plaffoff atmosphere. Bring on the playoffs so we can really crown a national champion. I would love to see Alabama play Boise State next weekend.

I will believe the SEC rules the nation when Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, South Carolina, and Kentucky play in a BCS Bowl. If the SEC is so good, then these teams should be competing at the national level on a regular basis, not the regional level. I mean even Georgia Tech beat Vanderbilt and Mississippi State.

Teams are in Conferences, Conferences are not in teams.

Bama has climbed the ladder, and made it to the roof…..my Dawgs are peeking out of the garage wondering if they should get on that first step of the ladder. I love ole Mark, but we are a team that will win 8 to 11 games( some would kill for that) and talk about next year. Saban took players that WEREN’T HIS and has won 27 of his last 30 games and a National Championship, and we can’t run 3 plays without a flag. Saban i don’t like, respect him yes. Richt is someone I really like, But putting us in a position to win it all, we’ll see….Firing Willie was a start. Watching teams light up the scoreboard on us the last two years has been tough. Losing a hard fought game 35 to 28 i can take, losing 41-7 i can’t.

Three years ago, the week Nick Saban was hired, you came on the Paul Finebaum Radio show & ACCURATELY PREDICTED that he would turn this program around and compete for national titles….soon. I don’t know if anybody thought THIS soon, though. I didn’t know much about him then, but you were adamant that he was a great coach. Needless to say you were right. As a Bama fan, last night was ugly, but we’ll take it! It would, however, have been sweeter if McCoy had been in the whole game. Freshman Gilbert earned his stripes last night. Now, for those who think Saban would “bolt” for the next job, who’s gonna pay him more than Bama? Mal Moore will match any offer that is put on Saban’s table; he can now afford it, just with the increased football revenue. (There are 15,000 + on the season ticket waiting list) If it’s not for money that he would leave, then there’s nothing Bama can do about it anyway. One more thing, for all you conspiracy or “there are sanctions coming” theorists, you haven’t done your homework on Saban. Like him or not, he wants to beat you “head up, face-to-face”, unlike some coaches we’ve had in the past. If your team can’t Man Up and beat him, then learn to accept second place….

M…

Be careful what you ask for in a 16 team playoff. My hunch would be that there would be few if any ACC or PAC 10 teams that would ever make it to the Elite 8. With the current system the ACC teams can at least get a whiff of a title game. It’s much easier to have a halfway decent team run through the ACC conference schedule and then get fired up in a bowl game to win it all. With a playoff system, no ACC team could ever be able to win four straight games against ranked non-conference opponents.

This year’s Tech team is a good example. They got to go to the Orange Bowl because they ran through most of their ACC opponents. On a national level, I think Tech was about as strong as South Carolina. Both were defeated by Georgia in close games and both beat Clemson by similar scores).

With a playoff system Tech would have never advanced as far along to such a prestigious bowl.

LSU, possibly Auburn are the only 2 teams in the West that could even potentially mount a challenge. My Gators will probably take a step back next year and lose a couple of games with the loss of the winningest Senior class in SEC history (sorry Bama) and 4 or 5 NFL bound Juniors. But I still say they will dominate the East and if you can get to the SECCG, who knows???? Alabama is definitely the team to beat next year. Difficult climb for the Dawgs. Here’s how it happens: Get a top notch defensive coordinator who can get the most out of outstanding talent. Redshirt freshman QB who matures quickly. Add a veteran offensive line, great special teams, and we’ve got a shot. Could happen, but maybe a longshot.

Why didn’t the AJC know about Kirby Smart interviewing for the Texas Tech job? I had to find out online from Alabama sources. while no mention from the AJC. Still none. It happens too often.

Kudos to the Tide. I know to state that they are enjoying this championship is putting it mildly.

for all of those crowing about the SEC…

Georgia did not do squat this year. We did not even play Bama so we have not right to boast about how great the conference is. Sure, if it makes you feel better go for it…but when I look at the three schools listed in those four championships i do not see our name.

And i will give Auburn credit because at least they went undefeated in 2004. they just got shafted at the end of their season.

Congrats to Bama for winning the title. Shoulda, coulda, woulda on Colt. Those are the breaks. Bama played well, got more points, and won the game. They deserve the title.

But what’s up with ‘our quarterback was hurt, too?’ Bama didn’t need a QB to win that game. MacElroy stood where he was told to stand and handed the ball off to the real players. And, dang, Ingram is good. And MacElroy did hand the ball off well, just like he did in Southlake.

As for those who claim all teams in the SEC are great because Bama is great. Well, UGA, SC, Vandy, Ole Miss, etc need to win their own games and stop hanging onto Bama and FL coattails. At least Baylor isn’t running around saying they’re great because Texas was in the title game. Okay, A&M probably is, but jeez, nobody can figure out what they mean with their ‘moral victories.’ Heck, nobody even knows where College Station is – it’s a big state and nobody’s really looking. But if the SEC is that great, all the teams should stand on their own records – make it into the top 15 – and stop with how this is a moral victory for all the mediocre SEC teams.

Congrats again to Bama. Today it’s Roll Tide, but I’m still whispering Hook ‘em Horns.

I hate that Mcoy had to miss his finale. When he went out, Bama might as well have been playing Arkansas St. It’s not so much whether or not the Texas starter was in the game but the fact that they stopped running their offense for the entire first half. If the freshmen can orchestrate 2 touchdown drives when they did run their offense, the starter surely would’ve done the same early on. But if and would’ve dont mean much in the end.

This War Eagle was pulling for the Tide and the SEC last night but I can’t shake the feeling that the BCS championship game is for the college football elite and no one else. Of course you know I’m going to refer to 2004 when the best Auburn team I have seen in my 50+ years went undefeated but had no chance to get into the championship game. If it had been Alabama under the same circumstances Alabama would almost certainly have been in that game since the powers that be want that kind of match-up between two teams of “tradition and excellence”, as they say. LSU gets a shot three years later with two losses but an undefeated Auburn team is shut out. Why? It is because Auburn is not considered an “elite”. Florida is, Alabama is, LSU is, even Tennessee is, but not Auburn and Auburn never will be because of the shadow the program has always operated under in a Crimson Tide state. Is this fair? Of course not, but then it’s never going to be fair to any team not named Alabama, Oklahoma, Texas, Ohio State, USC, etc, etc, and it’s never going to be fair unless there is a true playoff in place and real talent is rewarded over name recognition or past gridiron glory. We Auburn people are philosophical and realistic about the situation. We know Auburn will never play for a national championship under the present circumstances and so we don’t ever start a season expecting a national championship or even an SEC championship as our claimed destiny and birthright. We’re just happy to win an occasional Outback bowl every now and then. That being said, the frustration of 2004 will be around with us for a long time to come and especially since we have seen other SEC teams who probably weren’t as good as that 2004 Auburn team go on to BCS glory. This year the two best teams played in Atlanta on December 5th and if there had been a legitimate playoff system in place those two teams would probably have played again last night. Realistically though, until the string pullers figure out a way to make a playoff system make as much or more money than they do now we’ll continue to be stuck with the inefficient and unfair travesty that we have now. Anyway, WarEagle and congratulations to Alabama and the SEC.

Chris F

January 8th, 2010
11:36 am

I would like to say that I still believe Bama would have won even if McCoy was in the game. Texas defense tightened up and played much harder after they realized that the offense couldn’t do much. If McCoy had been in the game I don’t think the defense would have played as well. Alabama played like crap 3 out of 4 quarters and the passing game was non-existent. However, Alabama’s usual defense showed up and shut down the run from Texas. Props to Texas for playing their guts out and not giving up. Now that’s classy! Texas is a fantastic team it was just a simple who was better in 60 minutes. Do I think Bama is better than Texas? NO! I think they are EQUALS. Like I said 60 minutes.

Vince

To all of you who decry SEC pride…..

You just don’t get it.

When one of us wins against a non-conference opponent, we all win. The prestige of the conference grows in the minds of poll voters and in the minds of college football fans everywhere. That is why an undefeated SEC team ended up ranked #1, whereas undefeated teams from other conferences ended up ranked lower.

Bowl wins by members of our conference prove the superiority of the conference. Don’t you understand this? It suggests that a team with a 5-3 SEC record would most likely be undefeated in other conferences.

A poll on the ESPN site asks voters to predict what conference will produce next year’s national champions. Over half of the voters have selected “the SEC.”

Sure, UGA didn’t win the conference this year, but they have been to the SEC championship game three times this past decade and won it twice. That’s not too bad.

Chris F

January 8th, 2010

Greg that is tradition and it is usually only chanted during and right after the game. People like Bama89 are the idiots. People have to understand the pride that comes with being an Alabama fan. UA Alum92, even when passes were attempted the recievers were completely covered up. Either Bama didn’t pass much because of McElroy’s injury or decided against it due to great pass coverage or maybe a little of both. I think coahing mistakes in the first series all year have held Bama back some, like passing over and over again when you should set up the run first. Bama CAN pass the ball effectively, look at the florida game. I’m just trying to give credit to Texas where it’s due.

Yeah, and UT was lucky McElroy was playing with 2 cracked ribs, Ingram sat out the entire 3Q, and Bama’s ST gave UT the short field in the first quarter. Bottom line is things happen such as injuries. Your team should be equipped to minimize the disruption as much as possible. With cracked ribs, Bama’s backup was one play away.

If McCoy plays does Bama lose? Does UT still lose? Who knows. All the “what if” stuff doesn’t matter. The reality of the situation is all that matters.

I will say the backup QB for UT is going to be good. He was impressive during the 3Q.

Chris F, good luck with that “wait till the truth about USC comes out” thing. The reason they shot up their basketball program with the “self imposed” sanctions was to protect the football program. It’s like “see how we handle NCAA infractions? we hammer the program responsible internally. If the football program did anything wrong we would treat it the same. So, since we haven’t punished the football team , that means they have done nothing wrong.” Gotta love it.

GatorG and Gator Mike,

Looking forward to many great games against the gators. Some people on here are ignorant enough to write them off after just one loss in the seccg. But I follow recruiting closely and I know how dang stocked the gators are and how good brantley is going to be, especially with Debose back. They as well as we will be freaking loaded next year. I won’t be daring enough to say we win it all again next year but I will be daring enough to say that the sec champ does win it all again next year and that that sec champ will probably be either Florida or Bama.

Tide Rising

2:15 pm

Yep. Colt McCoy is a class act. I wish he wouldn’t have been hurt. Even if he played I still think we would have won. I just think the complexion of the game would have been dramatically different. We would have played much more aggressively offensively than 3 yards and a cloud of dust. Texas would still have been one dimensional with McCoy as they couldn’t run against us with any true consistency. Hats off to the Gilbert kid. He kept his composure, got better as the game went on, and has a bright future ahead for him.

Tide Rising,

Yes, Brantley is a great player – actually a better passer than Tebow. It’s definitely going to be tough for Florida next year, though, because of having to play Alabama on the road. We’ve split the last two games on a neutral site, but playing in Tuscaloosa will tip the scales somewhat. Alabama will have a similar experience in 2012, playing Florida in Gainesville after losing your Heisman trophy winner.

I may be wrong, but it seems like the SEC Championship Game has never been a re-match of a regular season game. If it has been, it’s been extremely rare. Something about playing the #1 team from the other division seems to throw teams for a loop, and that scares me the most.

To say that Utah/BYU/TCU/Boise can’t compete week in and week out has no facts to stand on. For example, Could Alabama’s Defense Defened MWC Offenses every week? NO. Could MWC defenses defened SEC offense every week? NO. The reason why: example 1: A 360 lb DT is useless when defended the spread. Example 2: A 6′5″ 260 pound LB would be abused by a spread offense. Example 3: A 225 pound LB is useless in stopping a Power run game on a weekly bases. Example 4: A 250 lb DE would not hold up every week to a power run offense.
It is apples and Orenges my friends. If you want to compete in the MWC you have to sacrifice size for speed. In the SEC you need a balance of size and speed.

The insinuation you use says “they weigh X amount…they cannot run that fast” is incorrect sir. That is the reason they are playing for the tops schools/school in the country. They are big AND fast. It is the reason the SEC is dominate. Can I get a witness? Hello

One last food for thought on what you said if I may. That 360lb Nose tackle takes away the middle of the line of srimmage for the most part when playing against undersized opponents and what that does is takes away from your play book. Ok so a portion of your play book is gone. Now you are a little more predictable in that the defense knows your probably going to run to one side or the other or …throw the football. So when your undersized receivers that are “faster” than the Pro Prospects come across the middle..well.. anybody can beat anybody but Boise st would be +23 vs. bama.

Tide Rising,

I may be wrong, but it seems like the SEC Championship Game has never been a re-match of a regular season game. If it has been, it’s been extremely rare. Something about playing the #1 team from the other division seems to throw teams for a loop, and that scares me the most.

We’ll see!

The SEC Championship game has featured a rematch of a regular season game a total of five times (1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004). The team who won the regular season game is 4-1 in the rematches, the lone exception being in 2001 when LSU defeated Tennessee.

The first regular season re-match was between Alabama and Florida in 1999. The final score was Alabama 34 – Florida 7.
