Alabama championship fueled by 2008 disappointment

Pasadena, Calif.–There is no way to measure how devastated Alabama was in December of 2008. The Crimson Tide, who had not won a national championship since 1992, were 12-0, ranked No. 1, and had a shot at a national title in their sights.

But then came the loss to Florida in the SEC championship game which gave the Gators the shot at the BCS title, which they won. Then came the loss to Utah in the Sugar Bowl. For a team that was 12-2, there was a lot of heartache at Alabama.

That’s why Alabama’s 37-21 win over Texas, which gave the Crimson Tide yet another national championship, was so sweet.

“We have a group of dedicated players who bought in to what we tried to do this season,” said head coach Nick Saban, who became the first coach in the modern era to win national championships at two different schools (He won a national title at LSU in 2003). “They were determined to prepare every day to put themselves in this position. We have a great team at Alabama and it starts with our president and the commitment the school has made to be successful.”

Alabama will enjoy this championship for a little while and then there will be talk of next fall when the Crimson will surely be preseason No. 1.

“We will be good enough to win it again,” said running back Mark Ingram, who had 116 yards against the No. 1 defense against the run (62,.2 ypg). “But this team knew how to work. Next year we will have to work just as hard. Or maybe even harder.”

Who was calling that game for the Tide?-all those pass plays-Game ball to the D–you gotta wonder what might have been

McDawg, Bama should have ran the ball the entire game. If they would have it would have been worse for Texas. Bama proved that the SEC has a powerful running attack and great rushing defenses. Texas proved that they had great pass coverage that the SEC isn’t used to. Contrasting styles and game plans. 2 great teams.

Chris, you mean a tradition like, say, burning a cross in someone’s front yard?

Nothing says “classy” like yelling, “We just beat the he!! out of you!” at the end of a game.

Hold on to all of those great Alabama traditions!

Congratulations Bama. I hope one day soon our team can be in your shoes. For all those bashing UGA, we have won 90 games in 9 years and there are not a lot of teams that can say that. On a side note,

Chris F, spot on post about the Rammer Jammer chant and the Bama89 moron. Also, to your point about Texas’ pass coverage, we only attempted 11 passes. My guess before the game was that if we didn’t need to throw it more than 20 times, we’d win handily. Roll Tide!

Great day to be a Tide fan.

Dawg fans, to get to this level you know what you must do: FIRE MARK RICHT!

Nice guy but there is no way he can compete with the elite coaches like Saban and Meyer.

Troof,

As much as I hate to admit it, I have to agree with you. I really like Mark Richt, and if I were looking for a guy to hang out with, he’d be the one. But unfortunately I think he’s just too nice to take Georgia to the next level.

That said, I don’t know who you’d replace him with.

Troof

Don’t know either but that’s UGA’s issue. Sometimes it takes a few misses to find the one that fits(Saban) and sometime you get it right in the first try or so(Meyer).

Richt will be run out of town in the next 2 years. Replacing the DC is only a band-aid.

UA Alum92, even when passes were attempted the recievers were completely covered up. Either Bama didn’t pass much because of McElroy’s injury or decided against it due to great pass coverage or maybe a little of both. I think coahing mistakes in the first series all year have held Bama back some, like passing over and over again when you should set up the run first. Bama CAN pass the ball effectively, look at the florida game. I’m just trying to give credit to Texas where it’s due.

Glad to bring another one home for the sec. I hate it for McCoy though. If he hadn’t been hurt it would have been much more exciting game. They would have performed better and our offense wouldn’t have gone into a shell in the 2nd half knowing that Mccoy couldn’t play.

On a side note where do people like this tool Greg come from?

Tony, perhaps before you go on your next hiatus you can point out some of the key out of conference games next season. I haven’t been able to find a good single source without going to the team’s individual sites.

Some of the interesting ones I know of are:

LSU/UNC in Atlanta
West Va at LSU
Penn St at Bama
UGA at Colorado
Auburn/Clemson
UCLA at Texas
Ohio St/Miami
Tenn/Oregon

If anyone else knows of any other noteworthy non-conference games please chime in.

the play calling in the first half was geared toward the pass-it was strange-they had their way with running game which would have opened up the pass later–i think it would have been a complete blow out had they stuck w/ normal game plan-i think babma was lucky in retrospect that McCoy got hurt

Yeah, and UT was lucky McElroy was playing with 2 cracked ribs, Ingram sat out the entire 3Q, and Bama’s ST gave UT the short field in the first quarter. Bottom line is things happen such as injuries. Your team should be equipped to minimize the disruption as much as possible. With cracked ribs, Bama’s backup was one play away.

If McCoy plays does Bama lose? Does UT still lose? Who knows. All the “what if” stuff doesn’t matter. The reality of the situation is all that matters.

I will say the backup QB for UT is going to be good. He was impressive during the 3Q.

naw, bulldogs just realized how over rated the SEC really is after seeing a crippled UT offense give alabama a time.

I like how he tells Big XII teams to “go play somebody” because you know… SEC teams do… just look at florida and alabama’s schedule

as for the record for “look at the sec nc appearance/win ratio’, well when you use a system as skewed as the bcs, you get results as skewed as the bcs.

Duke, so the Dawgs can’t compete in the “overrated” SEC? How sad of a program does that make them?

Bama beat 3 teams with final rankings in the top 10, including the #2 and #3 teams, and 2 other teams in the top 25. Yeah, Bama played all cupcakes.

Chris F

Duke, %%&*^%$#@ like you pi$$ me off. Do you really think a crippled offense gave Bama a time? They only scored 21 points and that was with Shipley who is extremely talented. Bama played like crap and played flat most of the game. The way I look at it it was an even match with or without McCoy considering our QB wasn’t 100% and our passing game was non-existent. 2 pretty much equal teams.

Duke,

Go back and look at all the bcs champions of the past 12 years. Every single one of them had a minumum of at least one close call and usually 2-3 close calls somewhere along the way. Man are you stupid. The undefeated dolphins of 72 had 3 very close calls. Every undefeated team needed a little luck somewhere along the way in a very long season. Only idiots like you don’t realize that.

Chris F, good luck with that “wait till the truth about USC comes out” thing. The reason they shot up their basketball program with the “self imposed” sanctions was to protect the football program. It’s like “see how we handle NCAA infractions? we hammer the program responsible internally. If the football program did anything wrong we would treat it the same. So, since we haven’t punished the football team , that means they have done nothing wrong.” Gotta love it.

Bama Again!

Bama’s not getting enough respect for this title and Saban will use that as motivation to win another next year. Some ESPN idiot was saying the title is “tainted” since mccoy didn’t play. That wouldn’t have mattered—bama would have won just as easy. He was no match for the bama D–best in the country! Look for another 14-0 season in 2010 and title #14!! Bama—on top for a long time—get used to it!

My father played on the 1935 Rose Bowl team that beat Stanford. My ongoing love of Alabama football is all wrapped up in my love and respect for him. He died before my 20th birthday and my memories of him are tied to saturdays at Bryant-Denny or in front of a TV watching Wide World of Sports (for you kiddies, that was pre-ESPN).

So allow me to enjoy this one. To daddy and the Bear up at the pearly gates:

GatorG and Gator Mike,

Looking forward to many great games against the gators. Some people on here are ignorant enough to write them off after just one loss in the seccg. But I follow recruiting closely and I know how dang stocked the gators are and how good brantley is going to be, especially with Debose back. They as well as we will be freaking loaded next year. I won’t be daring enough to say we win it all again next year but I will be daring enough to say that the sec champ does win it all again next year and that that sec champ will probably be either Florida or Bama.

Tide Rising

Yep. Colt McCoy is a class act. I wish he wouldn’t have been hurt. Even if he played I still think we would have won. I just think the complexion of the game would have been dramatically different. We would have played much more aggressively offensively than 3 yards and a cloud of dust. Texas would still have been one dimensional with McCoy as they couldn’t run against us with any true consistency. Hats off to the Gilbert kid. He kept his composure, got better as the game went on, and has a bright future ahead for him.

Tide Rising,

Yes, Brantley is a great player – actually a better passer than Tebow. It’s definitely going to be tough for Florida next year, though, because of having to play Alabama on the road. We’ve split the last two games on a neutral site, but playing in Tuscaloosa will tip the scales somewhat. Alabama will have a similar experience in 2012, playing Florida in Gainesville after losing your Heisman trophy winner.

I may be wrong, but it seems like the SEC Championship Game has never been a re-match of a regular season game. If it has been, it’s been extremely rare. Something about playing the #1 team from the other division seems to throw teams for a loop, and that scares me the most.

We’ll see!
