It was a very good year at Georgia Tech

Some random thoughts before I get on the plane to West Coast, where it is warm and sunny:

1. It’s been a very good year at Georgia Tech. While last night’s loss to Iowa in the Orange Bowl was a disappointment to Georgia Tech and its fans, at some point today it will be time to put it into perspective with the rest of the season. Georgia Tech ran into a big, athletic defense that had had over 40 days to prepare. When quarterback Ricky Stanzi was healthy, Iowa was the best team in the Big Ten and would have likely gone undefeated if he had been available for the Northwestern and Ohio State games.

In just two seasons Paul Johnson has made Georgia Tech a player again on the national stage with an ACC championship, a BCS bowl, and a win over Georgia. While it can’t be a great year unless you beat the state rival, this was a very good year at Georgia Tech.

2. Time to give the Big Ten its props. The Big Ten has gotten beat up during bowl season lately, going 1-6 last year. Iowa was the only Big Ten team to win a bowl last season when it beat South Carolina. But this season the Big Ten has posted four pretty impressive wins: Ohio State over Oregon to snap the Big Ten’s six-game losing streak in the Rose; Penn State over LSU in the Capital One; Wisconsin over what was supposed to be a faster, more athletic Miami in the Champs Sports; and finally Iowa over the ACC champs in the Orange. Northwestern had several chances to beat Auburn in the Outback before losing in overtime.

3. Kudos to Rich Brooks. The former Falcons assistant coach has decided to step down at Kentucky after seven seasons. One of his goals when he took the job was to leave the program in better shape than he found it. On that point he was a huge success. The program was devastated by NCAA probation when he got there and after struggling (9-25) in his first three seasons there were a lot of people who wanted to get rid of him. But athletics director Mitch Barnhart and President Lee Todd stuck with Brooks, who then took the Wildcats to four straight bowl games, something never done in the football history of the school. I will never forget Kentucky’s upset of No. 1 LSU in Lexington in 2007. In fact, that season I went to Lexington three times to watch Kentucky play and saw three great games, including a four-overtime loss to Tennessee which put the Vols into the SEC championship game over Georgia. Brooks turns the reins over to offensive coordinator Joker Phillips.

4. Bama looking for first win over Texas. There is a lot of history that says No. 2 Texas can beat No. 1 Alabama in tomorrow night’s BCS championship game. The two storied programs have met eight times in history with Texas holding a 7-0-1 mark:

Year———————Winner

1902———————Texas, 10-0 (Regular season)

1915———————Texas, 20-0 (Regular season)

1922——————–Texas, 19-10 (Regular season)

1947——————–Texas, 27-7 (Sugar Bowl)

1960——————–3-3 Tie (Bluebonnet Bowl)

1964——————–Texas, 21-17 (Orange Bowl)

1972——————–Texas, 17-13 (Cotton Bowl)

1981——————–Texas, 14-12 (Cotton Bowl)

I’ll be in Los Angeles on Thursday where I will give you my five burning questions about the BCS Championship game.

5. Urban Meyer wasting no time. For a guy who was supposed to be taking a leave of absence, Florida’s Urban Meyer has been a busy boy this week. He has lost four assistant coaches since the end of the regular season—Defensive coordinator Charlie Strong along with assistants Kenny Carter and Vance Bedford are all headed to Louisville. Offensive assistant Billy Gonzalez left before the bowl game to go to LSU. He has been replaced by Zach Azzani of Central Michigan. Meyer and interim coach Steve Addazio have hired former Gator assistant Stan Drayton, who left for Tennessee with some hard feelings in 2007 saying that he wanted to coach in a more conventional offense. Drayton is a good recruiter and Florida needs that to hold this class together. D.J. Durkin, who coached the past three seasons at Stanford, has been hired to coach the linebackers, which was Strong’s position. We’re still waiting to hear on the defensive coordinator’s job although published reports say that current assistant Chuck Heater has a shot.

Paul Johnson is a genius. His play calling against UGA, and now his offense stalls again in a bowel game. Lets face it you have to have a passing game. The option is not new and there is a reason it has gone in to the dust bin of history.

Tony, when is someone going to step up and tell it like it is about GT’s vaunted TO? Is it not obvious what happens to it when bigger, stronger, faster, teams are involved. The O line gets blown up and PJ can’t run this offense with bigger offensive linemen. It may work in the ACC but so far has been a dismal failure against the better conferences. Take that offense to the SEC, Big 10, or Big 12 and it would be a laughingstock.

Let’s go ahead and get this out of the way……….

The SEC was not as good as it has been in years past. Bamma and Florida were both really good, and LSU and Ole Miss were pretty good, but prone to having a bad game here and there. Miss State and Vandy were not very good, and the rest of the conference was very average.

The 85 Scholarship Rule continues to spread the talent across the football landscape.

The bar has been raised. You either learn how to jump higher or become satisfied with being a contender for the Limbo contest.

Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get get run over if you just sit there.

Last nights joyous embarrassment to Tech now seems like a double edged sword to me. If Tech has a good game, me thinks that the JR’s they have considering the NFL would have already made up their mind to get paid. Now I’m not so sure.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Dwyer comes back after last night’s performance. Hell, after last night, all the Jr’s in question will probably return as I’m sure NFL scouts were not impressed.

Hope I’m wrong though. If I am, can you imagine Tech without Dwyer and Thomas with that circus of an offense? The thought makes me giddy.

Tech laid a huge egg last night. The offense was horrible. Bama won 103 games in 10 yrs and 3 national titles with it in the 70’s, but its time has come and gone. It is no wonder that Texas, Oklahoma, and Alabama no longer use it. Yes, Tech is back on the national stage and all may be attributable to Coach Johnson, but last night’s performance will hardly keep Tech at the forefront of college football. It’s not that they lost to Iowa; it is the way that they lost.

Georgia Tech is a second rate program who can’t man up and beat their downtrodden rival in its best year. Not only that, they get out hustled, out manned, and out coached in a basketball game in which UGA only has one player that could even sniff the bench at Tech. Great bulletin board material for Duke and Wake next year when you talked about winning the National Championship in 2010.

Tony, quit kissing up. The ACC is an atrocious embarassment of a conference and Tech would have been 6 and 5 at best in either the SEC or Big 10. The Orange Bowl has got to be disgusted with their ACC contract. They don’t bring fans and they can’t compete for a win.

Your praise of Tech is a stretch. Tech won 11 games and you make them sound like the greatest team of all time even though they were manhandled by the number two team in the big ten. Also, look at Tech’s schedule which was a cake walk compared to UGA’s. If Tech and UGA swapped schedules, UGA would have gone 11-3 easily and Tech would have gone 7-5 tops. You are not taking into account the ease of Tech’s schedule. The only quality win they had was against Va. Tech.

Erin Andrews Landing Strip…I tend to see Georgia mentioned every time someone runs down the GT season. Usually something like “dominated by Georgia” or “out-coached and out-talented by Georgia” or “not as physical as Georgia” and my favorite, “GT is still the #2 D-1 program in the state of Georgia behind perennial powerhouse UGA”. And now it looks like even the basketball team is beginning to overtake GT on the court…NICE!

Face it, UGA beat your team with a lame duck defensive coordinator in a down year for them (8-5 being average for GT) and is taking their time finding the right person to continue the UGA dominance over your “high school” program. The AJC likes to play it up that UGA is being turned down left and right by candidates because it sells papers and fuels the fires of little goobers like you.

Seems to me that GT is still trying to catch up. Good luck with that and your denial issues.

Don’t you think whenever you give a good defense 30 days to get ready for any type of offence (especially a gimmick one) they usually have the advantage in a bowl game. You can only do so much in a week but give a good team 4 weeks and they can stop it. It’s not like Tech could change their offense to surprise Iowa. Tech’s offense is run to set up a weak passing game and when the running game failed the passing game couldn’t carry them.

Tech had a really good year. If their juniors come back, they should win the ACC again next year. With little time to prepare and not as much defensive talent, Tech will continue to be a force in the ACC’s regular season during CPJ’s tenure.

Now it’s time to get down to the nitty gritty. Two of my schools–Troy (grad school) and Bama (undergrad)–close out the bowl season.

Losing Interest in GT

January 6th, 2010

Defense didn’t look too bad last night after the first quarter, but Iowa’s offense is no steamroller, either. But I will lose interest next year if GT’s defense is not much improved and the offense can’t add another dimension to it’s current playbook. Yeah, 11-3 and an ACC Championship looks really good, but the play in the last two games indicates to me that that we didn’t beat anyone of significance this year except maybe Virginia Tech. Bottom line: we’re overrated.

Yes, GT had a very good year despite a tough loss last night. Interesting that when UGA loses three against ten or eleven wins in a better league (yes, despite a very meidocre year–more on that in a minute–the SEC is a much better league)many fans are disappointed, perhaps ALL fans should take a reality pill and learn to celebrate the good in a season. What FLA has done the past few years is to be commended, and, yes, can be strived for, but, it is not apt to happen again any time soon. What I’d love to see is the ACC/SEC thing really settled, and this year would’ve been a good year to do it as the SEC is obviously down. Bama vs. Tech, Clemson vs. UF, VT vs LSU, Ole Miss vs. Miami (or whoever was fourth in ACC) . . . . or, in other words, 1 vs 1, 2 vs 2, and so on until you get 12 vs 12. Just a thought . . .

“Paul Johnson has made Georgia Tech a player again on the national stage” What national stage are you referring to? The Almost Collegiate Conference is a far cry from the national stage. Canes+Dawgs+Hawkeyes = Tech defeats. Tech can’t handle the more physical teams and Johnson can’t adjust the offensive scheme when his high school offense is shutdown. Is his lack of adjustment due to his inability or the inability of the tech players? If tech is on the national stage it must be an awfully small stage.

KR, the uga fans embarrass the state on a daily basis no matter what time of year it is; that’s just a fact of life.

Yes, the mutts beat us in two sports and yes, we didn’t win the game last night. The fact remains that Tech still had a great season and is still on the rise. One fluke win from a mediocre team does not constitute owning the state. But I guess when you go into work knowing that Tech graduates run the real world, then a few wins on the field is all you have to hang your hat on.

uga is nothing more than an overhyped high school for party goers; without football, they have nothing. No wonder they make such a big deal out of it. So enjoy your luck this year mutts and enjoy your Tech bashing. Just remember two things: we know we had a better season, we know we’re a better school and we know that ultimately what happens on the field does not define a school.

Georgia tech’s finesse offense, based on cheap cut blocks, will not beat a big physical defense with more than 1 week to prepare–this year or next year. Johnson needs to recruit some bigger o-linemen and d-linemen, or it will be more of the same for years to come. That mickey mouse stuff that worked at navy will not work against the big teams.

To that end, do you really think you’ll be all that good, next year? You lose your best defensive player, from a poor D. If Dwyer and Thomas also leave… Not to mention several OL. You’ll be OK but not great. Hopefully you are rational enough to get the picture. Hopefully.

You had a good season but it ended badly. UGA, had an off yr but we should be decidely better, next yr, if we have a QB, and I think we do. And if we get a good DC and I think we will.

There is a point here. For GA TECH, this has been a good season. However, they play in a conference that had lost 9 of 10 BCS BOWLS in recent memory. Georgia Tech had the same problem this year that Georgia had last year. A good offense covered up for an awful defense. Give up over 300 yards rushing to Georgia and Clemson…you don’t win many games like that over a quality opponent.

Paul Johnson is a very good coach, but needs some PR work. Before playing Georgia he spoke of the importance of the game; lose, and he’s saying how it is more important to win the ACC and how Georgia had not won anything since the 1980’s. I’m confused; win the SEC in the last few years, but Georgia hasn’t won anything? I submit winning one division of the SEC is more of an accomplishment than winning the whole ACC right now. Then he lost on the big stage in Miami and the team got physically whipped doing it. What’s the coach speak going to be now?

The Orange Bowl was about how the game started. If GT comes out and puts up points and Iowa gets behind, it’s pretty tough for Iowa to come back. But when your team lacks a substantial passing threat, it’s hard to catch up when you fall behind. Even so, GT did catch up and made a game out of it with some great adjustments at half time that put Iowa’s defense on its heels, at least for the third quarter. GT had a great season and won its conference. As Coach Ferentz says at Iowa – winning the conference is what matters most, and the bowl game is the cherry on top. Iowa didn’t win its conference, and GT did. Your players and coaches deserve recognition and appreciation for their hard work and results, not scorn and ridicule.

Last night was a tough night for us Tech fans. Congratulations to Iowa in the OB and the Dawgs on their BB victory.

Admitedly, the ACC is subpar to the SEC in football. That is obvious. But, I do find it odd that some on this board have commented rather confidently how much better Georgia would have fared with our schedule when two teams we beat won this past month against teams UGA lost to.
UGA won this year because they were a better team that night. They deserved it and were obviously very proud of that victory.

In retrospect, what PJ has accomplished in his first two years at Tech has been great and I am very glad that he is leading our program. We have won 20 games and have beaten some good teams in the process, UGA being one of them. I look forward to the future with high expectations.

I even take pleasure in the fact that so many UGA fans comment on an article about Tech. You use to ignore us. I will take the insults any day over being ignored because it just proves that our program is getting better.

It’s not b/c Iowa had 30 days to prepare, it’s b/c they EXECUTED their preparation. Houston & Missouri had 30 days as well to prepare for Air Force & Navy in their perpective bowl games yet they were both beaten badly. It simply boils down to execution.

And go all the way back to the 1st game of the season for Ohio St vs Navy. Ohio St had all summer to prepare for Navy, but needed a 100 yd return of Navy’s game tying 2pt conv attempt to win 31-27.

So the bitterness here is Bulldogs fans ripping tech? The Georgia Bulldogs who went 4-4 in their own conference, are licking their wounds because they squeaked by a non-conference in-state rival? I’ll tell you this – when Iowa went to the Orange Bowl in 2002 with our sole loss coming to in-state Big 12 rival Iowa State, none of us cared. Our friends over in Ames were rooting for us to do well in the Orange Bowl that year and disappointed that we didn’t. Maybe it’s different in Georgia because there’s actually other things going on in your state besides college athletics, but we don’t have that luxury in Iowa. Our college sports are the face of our state to the nation. The face of Georgia you’re showing now is pretty ugly, and that’s a damn shame. Atlanta has always been on my short list of places I’d be interested in relocating to. But this is the courtesy shown to fellow Georgians? Yikes. Ya’ll got some growing up to do. When you still think it’s “hilarious” to call academic achievers “nerds”, you’ve got the mindset of a 12 year old. No, I take that back. My 12 year old knows better.

Tech fans have to be concerned. If they play outside of the ACC, they are physically dominated.

Opposing teams are now figuring out that antiquated offense. Techs defense is terrible. Tech’s kicking team is not strong at all.

Tech seemed real confused last night.

I have said since the Miami loss, that Tech’s offense is easy to stop when one has more than a week to prepare. I am glad that many others have seen this and are now commenting on it. GT needs to have a better pass attack to counter this. The surprise last night however was really the defense. They played OK, which normally is more than enough to win for GT.

I will be surprised if GT’s offensive success continues much longer. Surely teams in the ACC can pull tape of this game, Lsu, and UGA and figure out how to stop this offense. Load the box and play the run first on the corners. How hard is that?

They defined the end of a medicore defensive coordinator’s career at UGA, that it takes a little luck to beat a good team (Kentucky and LSU), that UGA was not prepared (Okie State and Tennessee) and that we are not “there” yet (Florida).

GT ’s losses define that all of your fan’s smack talk after the 3 point win over UGA in ‘08 was unwarranted and now tastes like $#!+ in your mouth.

It is a joke the way the ACC performs in the BCS bowls. Play some tough teams and on the road and then see if you win 11 games. The schedule determines everything in the “exhibition” that is college football.

Yesterday I took a couple of cheap shots at GT on this blog and for that I am sorry. I was having a bad day at work and wanted to release some anger. I was actually hoping Tech would come back in the 4th but it was not to be. Throwing the ball only 4 or 5 times per game is not going to get it done in big games. D Thomas must be wondering how in the hell is he going to get to the NFL in that offense. I guess the question is why would any good recruit who is not a qb or rb go to Tech? They are the only positions involved in the offense. CPJ like CMR has to make some changes to that D, way too much talent to get manhandled like that against UGA, Clemson and Iowa.

I’m an Iowa alumnus, class of ‘99, grew up in Iowa, not far from Minnesota. I am a nerd, though, I’ll admit to that. This is an eye-opening blog, though. Your rivalries are insane compared to ours.

As to Iowa’s football relevance – I think the records speak for themselves. Iowa is 3-1 against the SEC in recent history, including wins over LSU, Florida, and So. Carolina, and we nearly beat Florida a second time. The SEC’s is .556. Maybe you should refrain from commenting until the SEC solves Iowa, not the other way around. This year, The Big 10 has a victory percentage of .571 this year in bowl games, the SEC’s is .556.

It’s obvious from your castigation of “nerds” that you don’t care much for facts and knowledge, but while you’re gloating vicariously over the perceived shortcomings of other conferences, just bear in mind that you’re … you know. Wrong.

Good lord, the vast majority of posters here are losers. To my fellow Dawg fans, how can you run your mouths about Tech losing to Iowa when they had a much better season than us? Yes, I know their fans came out of the woodwork to act like jackasses when they beat us in ‘08 but that doesn’t mean we have to behave that way. Have some class, people…that’s what being a GA fan is about. I know that 2 bad years in 10 is not a big deal in the grand scheme of things…start acting like winners and you will be one. In football and in life.

To the Tech fans, congratulations on 2 good years. You have a long way to go before you can claim to be the premiere football program in the state…indeed, Paul Johnson is off to a great start. I wish you luck and want to beat a quality opponent in every game we play. That includes the UGA/GT game.

I have to give the Big 10 some credit this year. Ohio St, Penn St and Iowa are all quality teams and won their bowls.

LSU’s team speed was marginalized by the crappy field conditions and eseentially turned that game into a Big 10 slugfest.

I would like to see Florida play Ohio State but I know how that story reads. Bama and Iowa would be a great matchup.

Speaking of needing facts and knowledge, clearly you are unaware of UGA’s record against the Little 11. You look pretty foolish. Yes, the Little 11 has had a good bowl season. But are you seriously trying to convince anyone on here that it erases the past 5 years? The Little 11 is nearly as pathetic as the ACC in BCS games. What you obviously don’t know, is that the SEC is more times than not, the lesser ranked team in their bowls. Meaning, it’s pretty common for a mid to bottom tier SEC team to play a first, second or third place team from another conference. If it were at all possible to line up the SEC teams against any other conference by order of where each finished in their respective conference, it would never be a contest.

GA has some of the best recruits in the nation every year, and UGA and Tech should get most of them. I know Tech would have liked to have had Eric Berry from right here in ATL. I am sure UGA would have welcomed him.

It seems alot of UGA fans got bitter after last year’s defeat by Tech and by a handful of Tech fans who spouted off after 7 years of disappointment and are taking it out on these blogs. Whatever, I guess some people have to get pleasure where they can. I am definately disappointed but have throughly enjoyed watching my team win 11 games and a championship!

Whether some of you realize it or not, we need Tech to be a competitive force on the football field and I like the direction that they are headed. The TO was exposed, once again, last night and I think that CPJ is intelligent enough to realize that he needs to make some changes to the system. They only had one valid option in the receiving corp this year and if he is smart he will try to get a few WR’s so that he can add to the passing game which will then open the running game again.

Good blog Tony. I agree. As a yellow jacket fan its pretty hard to be disappointed in our season. We went 11-3, an ACC championship, and a BCS bowl. All in Paul Johnsons second year here. Things are definitely looking good for us. Iowa was the better team last night and kudos to them for playing a good game.

As a Hawkeye fan, I’m quite happy today, but also disappointed to read the tone in this blog. Keep in mind that Iowa’s defense coach, Norm Parker, was around when the option running game was the big thing in college football. He coached through its demise and knew how to beat it. Younger defensive coaches didn’t have the same wealth of experience and were awed by it. Parker had his team prepared perfectly, and it showed. GT has nothing to hang its heads about. It had an 11 win season — that’s a year to remember. It played against an underrated and well-prepared Iowa team. If there’s shame to be passed around, it should be among the scribes who kept doubting Iowa all season.

As for the classy Iowa fans- congrats! Your team played better last night and you got a win. It was a 3 point game with 2 minutes to go despite a huge difference in the stats. Some better play calling by CPJ (yep, he is not perfect Dog fans!) and it might have been a different story. A kicker that can make a field goal for Tech and its a tie game with minutes left. OT would have been interesting…Good luck next year! Who knows, we could meet again in an even bigger game!

‘Only slightly better than our scout team’….now that’s what I call a ’smack down’. Way to go young man, I couldn’t have hoped to have said it better myself. An observation – Coach Paul ‘Genius’ Johnson sure looked ‘resigned’ to the inevitable from mid-first half on. Once again his team ran into an active, athletic defense that, basically, stymied the option. And for those – including the announcers that read the ‘genius at adjustments on the fly’ talking point at some point during the third quarter – the only adjustment I could see, and one that even I could have told him earlier in the game, ‘run the other way’…away from number 94, that is. Noticed that the only time Tech started to move the ball they went to their right, cause that kid, whatever his name is, looked every bit as good as the Sue (or Suh, or Sir, or whatever) guy from Nebraska. And what’s even more telling is that Iowa seemed to have gained most of it’s yards by running right at that AA defensive end – no matter where he lined up. Face it, when your O-line and D-line both get whipped in the same game, you don’t stand much of a chance….BayBay where were ya’?

Tech fans very well should be concerned, cause the doubts expressed early on about how well this offense will fare against bigger, stronger defenses are all back on the table – just in time for recruits to make their final decisions.

“[I]t can’t be a great year unless you beat the state rival, this was a very good year at Georgia Tech”? Really, it can’t be a great year? When’s the last time Tech on 11 games? When’s the last time they won the ACC Championship? When’s the last time they played in a BCS bowl?

Yeah, I’d say it was a great year. Was it perfect? No. Could it have been better? Yes. Will it get better? Yes. A great year, but greater ones are to come.

BuzztheKiller,

You and I both know that was the biggest game Yech will EVER see again. You blew your lone chance to win a BCS game. The mistake is over. Yech will be back where they belong next year, in the middle or bottom of the ACC. Johnson is exposed as one of the most overrated coaches in the country. His offense is a joke and more of a thorn than a threat. Iowa could have easily blown you tools out of the water. Thanks to the horrible overruled call that stalled another surefire score of a drive, that kept your thugs alive.

I think it’s time to start thinking about who your next coach will be

BuzztheKiller

January 6th, 2010
10:56 am

As far as Johnson’s offense- someone said it above- I think he has made the most of what he inherited from Gailey (more than Gailey would have!) He is also smart enough to know he needs to develop more of a passing threat. Even the old option attacks featured the threat of a downfield pass now and then and Tech had that at times this year, but not at all last night. The other factor is the O line that was dominated by UI last night is not his line either. I see him recruiting the type of line that fits his offense. I will take 10 wins per year in first two years any day! And I think we will get better…

One more observation about last night that eats me today- All American receiver who plays in the NFL next year and we can’t throw him at least a screen pass all night???

OK, I get it, but I also guarantee you that the loss to Georgia combined with the loss to Iowa threw a huge ‘wet blanket’ over the whole thing and that’s the only ‘definition’ I need – cause us Georgia fans know just how to keep that blanket wet in case they might want to forget it. It’s what rivalry fans do.

By the way, how great is it that ESPN keeps playing up the sorry effort by Tech’s football team alongside Georgia’s beatin’ Tech’s, ranked, B-ball team..heh, heh, heh. Life is great, ain’t it?

To Really: I wouldn’t mind a Hawkeye-Dawg match next year. It could be a good game if GA gets its act back together. Iowa will have almost all of its starters back, as well as its #1 running back (who didn’t play a down this year). They should be better next year, but opponents will have them targeted, too. They will have more depth and experience and will probably begin the year rated around #5. We’ll see what happens after that.

As a side point, Forida recruited Wegher hard and didn’t get him. He’s the #3 back on the team, and got 114 yards against Tech. Not bad for #3, but what you’d expect from someone who Florida wanted.

The 94 guy was Clayborn. He’s back next year, too.

Finally, look at Iowa’s bowl wins over the last few years — Florida, LSU, South Carolina, and Tech. They aren’t having much difficulty with teams from the South, particularly the SEC.

I was pulling for Tech last night. Iowa just shut them down ( and no, I don’t think Iowa would match up well with Georgia ). CPJ never really made adjustments just stated they were not executing in the first half. Tech did have a good year, no doubt. Georgia had a so-so year but should be better next year hopefully. If tech’s offense stays intact the game in Athens next season will be pretty entertaining.

I have to admit that I was surprised at how Iowa handled GT’s offense. Congrats to Iowa and all their fans. Finishing second in the Big 10 +1 was a good season for you(even without your qb for two games).

GT did have a good season…by GT standards. Winning the ACC championship was good. But it is the ACC. As one poster said, it is like winning the tallest midget contest. GT is not ready to play big boy football on a national stage. They will win 7-8 games in the ACC and once in a while win the ACC. But no one outside of the ACC will care.

Tech fans got a little carried away in ‘08 with their win over UGA and with the changes CPJ made at Tech. I have lived here all my life and have seen both schools have good and even great teams. But this Tech team is average at best. The Dawgs were very average also. Neither team is great, regardless of what Tony says.

One more thing that bothers the Bulldog nation, is Johnson’s attitude toward UGA. When he beat them, it was worth a ring. When he lost to them, it was not that important. That is a crybaby attitude and Dawgs will relish every opportunity to watch him and his smug attude get beat.

Go Dawgs.

Dawg Man,

Yes the OL needs the most rebuilding. But Ferentz is an OL man at heart and has no problems finding them and getting them in shape. One thing that gets little attention about Iowa is that they don’t recruit 5-star high schoolers. They get 3-star players who are off the radar and willing to play a different position than they did in hs. A lot of Iowa players in the NFL owe their careers to coaches who found their best place on the team and made them better.

Cinderella’s just happy to be here. The big boys take care of business. The Hawkeyes can run and hit with all the aplomb of the Buckeyes and Nitanny Lions, all while working with a fraction of their resources. Thanks to the Orange Bowl, the perception is finally going to catch up with the reality.

The big boys set a tempo and keep it. Iowa quarterback Ricky Stanzi tossed two touchdowns in the first 12 minutes, completing nine of his first 10 throws. Georgia Tech, an option team not built for playing catch-up, got behind the 8-ball at Land Shark Stadium and stayed there.

The big boys finish. The Hawkeyes put the hammer down late, rushing for 66 yards in the fourth quarter while clinging to a tenuous 17-14 lead. They pounded away, undaunted, until the Jackets’ defense was little more than a Ramblin’ Wreck. When freshman tailback Brandon Wegher burst left and exploded into the clear for a 32-yard touchdown run with 1:56 left in the game, the levee finally broke.

The big boys play over their mistakes. When Ferentz elected a fake run around right end at the 6:53 mark of the fourth quarter rather than try a short field goal, a foot-race between kicker Daniel Murray and Tech safety Morgan Burnett that looked doomed from the start, you wondered if the momentum had finally turned. Instead, the Iowa defense drove the Jackets backwards, forcing a punt.

From the Orlando Sentinel….Obviously the reference to “big boys” isn’t meant for GT.

I have been waiting on this all day. Let’s hide the fact that Tech didn’t show up for another Bowl game, and this one on a National stage. Let’s talk about Iowa having 40 days to prepare for Tech. Did they? Considering that Iowa didn’t know until Dec. 6th who would be in the Orange Bowl as ACC champion, isn’t it 30 days? And didn’t Tech have the same 30 days to prepare for Iowa. Looks like Iowa took advantage of the time, just like LSU last year and Tech didn’t. Yes, Tech should be proud they won their first outright ACC title since 1990 and went to their first major bowl in 42 years, but they should step back and think on three things and they are: LSU, Georgia and Iowa. Big defects in probably their 3 biggest games dating back to last December 31st and two of the losses to 7-5 (UGA being 6-5 at time of play) SEC teams that were underachieving. The losses should be looked upon that in a weak ACC conference the offense will work, but outside the conference they need to modify their attack and Paul Johnson needs to quit being pompus and not changing his scheme at all because he is bound and determine to say this offense will work against anyone. Well, it doesn’t.
IF Tech wants to continue winning ACC Championships and be content fine but if they want to win on a National stage they need to change with their “big” game approach. Not use excuses like they were nervous as Dwyer said last night. Passing the ball should be an option, and as Nesbitt proved last night, against UGA and LSU, he cannot deliver.

Huh?

January 6th, 2010
11:44 am

GT

January 6th, 2010

Tech played hard, also they had to prepare not knowing who the quarterback was. The Big 10 is back and it is good for college football. Watch for ND to swing back as more coaches figure out how to coach slow headhunters against these spread offenses. If Tech had some linebackers they would have gone undefeated, when the offensive line of Georgia, or Iowa or Miami eats you up and your linebackers are average it is a long night. We will fix it, this was a great year not only for Tech but college football as a whole. For a national audience there has got to be a national sport, the old Southwestern Conference disappearing has always left a hole in the competition, then population movement down south has abandon the Big 10. SEC is still the best conference but they need something beyond a third world nation to make the Olympics.

The Good – Tech had a good year, and has improved in the last two years. Tech beat UGA last year – Tech beat Clemson twice this year and won the ACC

The Bad – Tech lost it’s 5th straight bowl game. Tech lost to UGA this year making it the eighth time in nine years. Tech now has to listen to the payback all year due to the juvenile bloggers like St. Simons, Yellow Fuzz, Stinger, stc. from last year.

Tech’s lack of attendance at Landshark Stadium had to be a huge letdown to GT’s seniors – almost as disappointing as the fact that Coach Paul Johnson can’t prepare his team to play a bowl game – in 2 years of bowls CPJ is 0-2 and his perfect option has been outscored 62-17!

The one thing the GT seniors never will forget is walking out of the Joke by Coke after an unranked UGA team humiliated them on Senior Night 30-24. THERE GOES CALEB KING UNTOUCHED!

Well, to say that I’m not disappointed after that game would be an understatement! This has been a fun season to be a Tech fan and I look forward to having more fun next season! Iowa looked like the team that I’d expected and they beat Tech down. CPJ has done some amazing things in his short tenure at Tech and I look forward to him finishing what he’s started. I’m not sold out on the ‘bigger defense’ stopping Tech’s offense….not arguing against it, but Navy AND Air Force won their bowl games running the same style offense with smaller players against two ‘bigger defenses’. Hate that we lost in the Orange Bowl the way we did. Congrats to Iowa! Looking forward to next year….CPJ is still at work! GO TECH!!!

Seems GT suffers as GA has. Great offense, poor defense. In the yrs. GA had a great defense they were great. But Iowa’s defense really looked great last night. GA could stop GT up the middle but not on the perimeter. Iowa did both. How many passes did GT complete? One, maybe. As a Bulldog my 2nd favorite team is anyone playing GT. Hope GA gets Smart or as I’ve been saying, David Pollack. I haven’t heard his name even mentioned. He is inexperienced. But with his background, All American (3 times), promising NFL career before injury, plus his great personality and enthusiasm (these in themselves make up for lack of experience)should make him a perfect candidate and at least as experienced as Vince Dooley was when he became HC. Although he and David Stinchcomb seem to have promising broadcsat careers, wouldn’t they rather be coaching? At the Univ. of GA? Ha. Wouldn’t that be great? And how about David Greene? What is he doing? Selling insurance? Or something like that. Don’t mean to demean that however.

In another classy move by the Techies, namely CB, it appears I have been blocked from the GT “Ramblin’ On” blog.

Just as blocking the football score from being posted for a while, this is yet another sign of the fact that Tech fans can only handle wins & pats on the back, which is a big reason they aren’t respected as a fan base by many.

For brevity sake: A given by Taliban fans that UGA under Richt is lousy, then WHY has UGA WON over Go Taliban 8 out of 9 years??? Hmmmmmmmmmmm??

Another Taliban given is that Tech is a power ………then WHY have they lost to LSU and now to Iowa and UGA and to lousy Miami all in 13 months????? Neither Miami, nor Iowa nor LSU NOR UGA have won their conference title. HMMM?

Another given is that the tech brand “is a big time” draw. Then why were there 22,000 EMPTY SEATS in that Dolphin’s stadium??? Hmmmmmmmmmm? Iowa had to drive 1,600 + miles.

If Tech is a basketball power ,,,,,,,,,,,then WHY?? did UGA stomp them in Athens and Hewitt has never won there NOR CREMMINS. Hmmm?

I rest my case. Facts like GLOBAL COOLING are inconvenient truths to moron G un T oter techies. HAHAHAHA

The BCS will go with four major venues and the Cotton ( long time favorite of mine ) Bowl will reign supreme over the pathtic Orange. It has lost its status, MUCH LIKE GT, was in the 1950s, when I was a kid. Bobby Dood saw his last loss in the Orange ……….I know, as I viewed it in my senior year in HS back in 67. Repost from the other blog:

First of all let me congratulate Tech on…..nevermind. I was actually pulling for you guys last night but do not feel sad that you took yet another beatdown.

Now, it’s time to put this “academic superiority” and “we can’t recruit because of academics” crap to rest.

Here are the majors for your starters as they were lifted from your official athletic website.
Ben Anderson management
Anthony Barnes management
Josh Nesbitt management
Jonathan Dwyer management
Roddy Jones none listed
Demaryious Thomas management
Brad Sellers management
Joseph Gillbert biology (pre-med)
Sean Bedford aerospace engineering
Cord Howard management
Phil Smith none listed
Derrick Morgan science, technology and culture
Logan Walls none listed
TJ Barnes none listed
Anthony Egbuniwe management
Steven Sylvester none listed
Brad Jefferson none listed
Cedric Griffin management
Mario Butler management
Morgan Burnette none listed
Mario Edwards History, Science, and Technology
Gerrard Tarrant none listed

That must be the Ivan Allen school of Management Engineering and Stuff. Is that like your remedial program? Are those courses actually offered on campus, or do you bus the athletes to Georgia State to take them? Not many “engineers” listed here, so enough with the academic superiority crap. Your only disadvantage in recruiting is that your campus is smack dab in the middle of a “sh1thole” and no self-respecting high school athlete with ambitions of playing in the NFL will want to come to GT and play in the wing-T. Plus all the girls are fat or wear a burka.

I can’t see downplaying the Orange bowl as a bowl. Gads, thing of the Sugar Bowl fraud, where Florida showed Cincinatti (and I’d add TCU and Boise State) as second tier programs. After the Sugar Bowl, the Fiesta Bowl became the equivalent of the Sun Bowl. I’m glad that the Iowa-Tech game ended up in the Orange Bowl, rather than one of the teams playing TCU and the other Boise State. The Orange Bowl really was a more meaningful matchup.

Tech’s Rec degree is geared toward “park mangement”. They need to know ( within 5 years ) what a Osmose pressure treated 4″ x 4″ post is ( with that yellow label of you do not want it) and what gas powered post hole auger is and how deep it has to be to pass Fulton COunty building codes and they learn to use galvanized, zinc dipped, spiraled nails. THAT is the essence of a tech diploma IF YOU ARE A STARTER. Waffle House is also part of the equation, as it is run by tech’s former players.

Tech is only a mirage in academics and in sports ………a 1950s, early 60s has been and they were RUN OUT of the SEC ……….then they tried to beg back in the back door in ealry 70s. Check it out.

CPJ’s face was priceless when he realized how those big farmers shoved his boys around. Slap em in the face he screamed.

By the way, a relative of mine is an MD and he is remotely involved with the GTAD and he told me that the key players in b ball and f ball are dumber than Rocks, which is another Tech degree path.

It’s been interesting to watch, and participate a bit, in this discussion. Actually, I don’t get the TECH-Dawg venom. To use the instate battle in Iowa as an example, whenever Iowa plays Iowa State, I’m a Hawkeye to the end. But when Iowa State plays anyone else, I’m rooting for the Cyclones. I think that this is rather typical in Iowa. Then there’s the smack between Dawgs and Jackets. You’d think the civil war was fought between a couple cities in Georgia! So, are there people in GA who may favor one school, but support the other? Or is this the GA lifestyle?

BTW, I live in far southern Missouri, very near Kentucky, Tennessee, and Arkansas. I know that such malice toward other conference or instate schools is not limited to Georgia. The SEC Conference seems to be built on such malace. I don’t see why it’s necessary. Why not try to beat the other guy in the conference or state, accept the outcome, and cheer for him when he’s in a bowl game against another conference.

Finally, I had trouble watching the Who-Could-Ever-Care Bowl between IA State and Minnesota. I wanted my state rival to win, but I also wanted my conference to win. I’d have enjoyed a tie. Anyone else think like that.

Before you rock me too hard, I’m not a pig farmer or corn farmer. Worse, I’m a college prof.

T. Graham Brown

January 6th, 2010
1:11 pm

We all like Paul Johnson. He seems to be tough with good character, which is what all of the Tech fans have been wanting. Let’s face it though, this season was a disappointment. The only two games where this team faced remotely competitive programs from outside the conference, they were beaten. Talent is still an issue, but so is *gasp* questionable play-calling. Tech’s only real “accomplishment” was an ACC championshiop which was greatly tarnished when their opponent for the title was blown-out by South Carolina the weekend before. There will be no ACC teams in the Top 10 at the end of the year for good reason. An ACC Championship this year meant about as much as a WAC Championship. If the ACC did not have a built-in bid for a BCS bowl game, then there was a good chance Tech would not have been playing in The Orange Bowl at all. Tech was embarassed and exposed last night on a national stage and the future doesn’t look any better. Tech’s three best players will likely leave for the NFL and Josh Nesbitt is going to continue to be the most one-dimensional QB in college football (he will never be benched however because Shaw, the backup, is an abomination at QB).

Can anyone name one “quality win” by Tech this year? Anyone?

Its exactly what it is. Its the same way you all have to drive jacked up trucks because you lack in other areas. The whole Napolean complex theory you know. We got beat last night no excuses. Iowa is a better team than I thought they were and now see why they received an at large BCS bid. Regardless of who we lost to last night the season as a whole was a good one and nothing you guys post can take that away. Accept that fact and accept the fact that you are an afterthought now in your own conference. simply put if UGA thinks they can do better in another conference then leave the SEC and join a different one. You really should be ashamed that year after year your team underachieves and all you do is make excuses is to why. Not even going to try to say that Tech & Florida are on the same level but remember when Meyer came to coach there and they said is system wouldnt work there cause of the brutal SEC? Turns out it does. Tech will never be on that level but if they can get a dominant defense there it only makes the option that much better. Now we could suck in 2 years when all of the team will be Coach Johnsons recruits but until then its plain and simple UGA fans see that they are stuck in the middle of the pack in the SEC and will have more trouble with Tech than they want

And, I do have another SEC connection. I have a son and daughter-in-law in Baton Rouge, of all the godforsaken places. Diehard and malice certainly are equivalent there. Maybe that’s why the last play in Nick Sabin’s coaching career at LSU (a 50 yard pass by Iowa to beat LSU, still warms my heart). How could a coach, who allows his team to let an opponent catch a pass on the 20 yard line and run into the end zone to win the game as time expires, end up with the Dolphins (dismal failure) and Alabama?

I can understand UGA ragging Tech after Tech lost to UGA. Thats supposed to happen and expected. But what do they really gain by ragging Tech after losing a BCS game to a good team? You desperately want to convince everyone that Tech and the ACC are terrible. Why? What would that say about your win over Tech? That is was meaningless? It also doesnt help that Tennessee and Kentucky couldnt beat Va Tech and Clemson, two teams that couldnt beat Ga Tech. If you guys are right and the ACC is terrible then UGA got beat by two terrible SEC teams, and beat one terrible ACC team. Is that really what you guys think? I would think you would want to represent yourselves better then that.

Only somebody with the mind of a Mutt would consider an 11-3 season replete with a conference championship as a “letdown”.

But then, you Mutts want to FIRE EVERYBODY after a loss. Well everybody except Suntan. After screaming loudly for years, permatan cow-towed to his fan base and fired the people they wanted fired. Apparently the tail is almost literally wagging the Mutt.

Sorry Guy,

I’m laughing with you. I’m also a NASCAR fan and attend races. Those southern NASCAR people (except at Talladega) can walk up to tailgating fans wearing another driver’s colors, have good conversation and share their beer and food. Hello, they can even wear different colors within a family and get along at the race. I enjoy that atmosphere very much. Something is very diffferent between NASCAR and football for people in the south, I guess.

Most dawg fans root for the other SEC teams when they are playing outside the conference. Personally I hope tech is undefeated every year till the last game of the regular season. The banter you are witnessing is generated from a few tech fans that literally wore out the blogs after their 08 fluke win (a win so big for tech they bought their players rings with the score etched in the ring). Our rivalry exceeds football it is a way of life, very similar to Bama-Auburn rivalry. Many households throughout the SEC are divided in allegiance. Doesn’t mean we hate each other with “malice” as you insinuate, just with “good clean hate”. We actually love to hate techies. You need to check the blogs leading up to the orange bowl to see the smack being talked about Iowa, UGA and the independence bowl to gain some perspective.

The headline is correct. The Orange Bowl loss to Iowa didn’t define Tech’s season. The LOSS TO GEORGIA in Atlanta on November 28th is what defined Tech’s season. Tech fans have an identity crisis. They can’t exist without UGA. Tech fans suffer from some serious football-envy. In 2008, Georgia’s better racord and higher ranking didn’t matter to them because they beat Georgia. In 2009, losing to Georgia didn’t matter because the finished with a better record and a higher ranking. With double standards like that, I’m guessing that Tech fans are also Democrats! Five consecutive bowl losses? That has to be some sort of a record, at least for teams in the State of Georgia.

And for the icing on the cake, they further proved that the triple joke doesn’t work.
Last night’s performance, in the worst orange bowl in history, was a disgrace.
Soon even Duke will shut your joke offense down.
Nice Conference
Next year, even the free hotdog and coke meal, paired with a $5.00 ticket, will not be enough to get people to your games (in the stadium located in the downtown area of the largest city in the state and only holds 55,000 people).

Strangely losing to UGA didnt bother me too much this yr. The yr went about as I thought it would to be honest. I wanted to see Tech win the ACC and go to a BCS bowl and thats what they did. I dont expect to beat UGA, win the ACC, or go to a BCS next yr but in 2 yrs from now that could be different. Its called reasonable expectations UGA people. You should try this instead of your typical sense of entitlement. AS long as you have to deal with Saban, Meyer, and yes even Tech while Johnson is here you will not win anything significant. So what if we play in the ACC. If the other teams arent any good thats not techs fault. Personally I hope every other ACC team loses every gsme they play. I will never try to ride another teams coattails when they win something cause we cant. I am a Tech fan not an ACC fan people who chant for their conference are a joke. Thats simply fans of teams that suck. (and yes I think the same for any ACC fan that does that crap too) I even heard earlier this yr when UGA womens softball team was in the World Series Pac-10 people chanting for the conference instead of the team. thats the real joke. What next….will people start going to NFL games and chant NFC South for Tampa?

T Brown, Our ONE win this year came against VT. I would agree with most posts, in that, we were terribly over rated. I have said ALL year that this team is just not that good. It is surely not a top 10 team, as proven when we played UGA, MIAMI, and Iowa. We have NO defense, and for the life of me, I will never understand how CPJ can defend the players or the coach. Someone has to be held accountable. If we are going to get better, compete with the elite programs, we should expect accountability from our coaches. I can’t remember how long it has been since GT has had a defense this bad. I have been watching this team for a long time, we have been through some tough times and have had some very bad teams, but I don’t think I have EVER seen such a SORRY defense! Last nights game was eye opening in a lot of ways. The defense actually played one of their better games, although the same weakness was evident, with Iowa’s ability to run and pass. Our defense actually scored as many points as our OFFENSE…. I sat there in disbelief at the less than inspired football being played, only to remember the LSU debacle. This was very similar to our uninspired play last year…. How could a coach who had just been given a generous raise allow this to happen, AGAIN! Truly this season seems like a success on the outside. I would submit that it is a step backwards and look forward to CPJ admitting as much, and D-RAD needs to make sure it doesn’t happen again!

Well I will be a fool Kevin but I dont want my team to simply have a perception that they are good or a perception of being good based on how good other teams in the conference are but instead want them to be considered good by what they accomplish on their own! Your program is best remembered for what you accomplish and not for what others in the conference do. Im not going to play that whole we be VA Tech who beat UT who beat UGA who lost to Kentucky who lost to Clemson who lost to TCU who lost Boise who beat Oregon who lost to Ohio ST who lost to USC who lost to Stanford who to OK who lost to Texas. Bottom line I want my team to beat who they play and a playoff!(is that too much to ask?)

AlanW

Actually, I am very pleased that Tech had a great season. I am very happy for the players, the coaches, the students, and most of the fans. My comments here were directed at the chuckleheads who, year in and year out, insist that Georgia Tech’s football program is superior to Georgia’s. When people point out the overall series record, the Techies dismiss it. When answering for Tech’s 2009 loss to UGA, they insist that Tech has a superior football team because they ended the season with a better record and higher ranking. Last year, despite UGA’s better record and higher ranking, they insisted that Tech’s program was superior because they won the game in Athens by three points. Bottom line is that many of the Tech fans here so badly want their team to be THE premier college football program in the state, that the end up contridicting themselves at every turn. And when all else fails, they make cracks about Techies being smart, and Dawgs being stupid. Yep. They are sonsumed by their envy of UGA’s football program.

You won this year but Tech will win their fair share of games against UGA in years to come. And forget about competing in your own conference against Bama and Florida. You will be in the shadow of those 2 programs for years to come. Get used to it. You’re 2nd tier status in your own conference and that’s what you’re really angry about.

The jackass that uses the very mature name of the 6th Grade Team has to be the most immature jerk on any blog I have seen. Tech is so bad we beat some pretty good teams in Virginia Tech, Clemson(twice), North Carolina, and Mississippi State. We beat two SEC teams (Vandy & MSU) and lost to one this year. We beat Auburn the last two times we played them when they had Cadillac Williams and Ronnie Brown (now pretty good pros). We would be very competitive in the SEC and would certainly not beat Alabama, Florida or LSU year in and year out. We are 1 and 1 with Georgia under Johnson. No one will argue that the ACC is the equal top to bottom of the SEC. That does not mean however that Tech could not be very competitive in the SEC. Finally, Iowa is the best team in a very good Big Ten this year. They would beat either Ohio State or Northwestern today having Stanzi.

Iowa was 9 and 0 before Stanzi got hurt and was out for nearly two months. I agree with Tony that they would have beaten Northwestern and Ohio State with Stanzi. As poorly as we played we were only losing 17 to 14 after stopping their fake field goal and there was 6 minutes and 52 seconds left. I really thought we could drive it down and score like we did against Clemson in the ACC Championship game. We were not blown out and lost to a very good team that will wind up ranked 5th in the country. Nothing to be ashamed about or apologize for.

2. Lost to worst UGA team in 13 years
3. Empty seats to see the best tech team in 20 years
4. A swiss cheese defense
5. A one deminsional offense
6. Blown out by a mediocre Miami team
7. Second win EVER over a down Florida St. team
8. Needed OT to beat a non-bowl eligible Wake Forrest
9. 5th bowl loss in a row… CPJ is 0 and 2.
10 Dropped out of top ten after domination by Iowa

Great year, indeed, for tech. Lose (as usual) to UGA and then get beat in a BCS bowl that you got by simply winning a pathetic conference championship. If Tech is such a terrible team then why do all you “dawg” fans insist on reading and commenting on our stories? Do you not have anything better to do with yourselves? Probably not. I can promise you that I have never been so rude and disrespectful enough to leave a comment on a story about uga. In fact I heard the most trash talk about uga from georgia fans this season….you are sooo dedicated. Tech had a great season and I wake up thankful everyday that I’m a Tech fan and that I don’t “bark” at others. However that is exactly the type of classless and trashy thing that Tech fans have come to expect from you slobbery dogs….get a life. If you bark like a “dawg” then what’s that make your momma?

Wait’ll Johnson has only Johnson-type recruits. So what if Tech lost two bowls in a row under CPJ; how many did the Jackets lose under Chan Gailey?
And when people counter with the Great Dodd–and he was a great coach–let’s not forget that Tech had a lot of 7-3 seasons under Dodd. He was a great spin master, though, and by the time he was through weeping each year Tech fans and alum were happy for that 7-3 as long as they beat Gawga, which his teams did for eight straight years. Dawg fans don’t want to remember.
TV–ESPN–and radio talk shows have put so much emphasis on national championships that a conference title has been cheapened, too. Forget the TV wonks, a conference title is a BIG deal.

This blog has gone to he11. Well, it started that way.

Tech girl, while I don’t condone the Ga goons rubbing your recent misfortunes in your face, your fan base was well represented on Ga blogs for the better part of 09 rubbing your once in a decade three point victory in our face. THAT was pretty obnoxious. I guess payback is a motha…

Now to football, Tony, you write that Iowa had 40 days to prepare for this game as if it is an excuse for Tech. WTF is that all about? The boys from up north had the same amount of time didn’t they? Both teams knew exactly who they were going into the game and knew what they had to do to win. That’s what bowl season is all about. Nothing will change until a playoff is institute.

What it comes down to is exactly what I have been saying on these blogs since it was announced Tech was playing Iowa. IOWA WOULD, AND DID FOR THAT MATTER, OUT MAN YOUR WEAK FRONT LINE ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BALL. This offense thrives on the fact that a weak to prepare after a tough game is really hard to do. Lets face it that’s how they pulled off the majority of their wins this year.

I predict Tech will struggle in every bowl game they play under PJ. With a month to prepare, all things are equal and the gimmick offense is neutralized. It comes down to who i smore physical after that.

We’ve seen who wins that matchup the last two years Techies.

In sum, don’t show your face on Ga blogs until you beat us again in November ‘10. Your only quality win this year was VT. Keep that in mind.

Tech hasn’t been anything in decades, Tech hasn’t won a major bowl since the 1950s!!!!!

The bottom line is that ugag would change places with GA Tech in a heart-beat: conference champion, 10+ win season, BCS bowl. Any doggie that says otherwise is simply a liar. Tech will end up top 25 in football, and also likely in basketball.

They win by 30 points. The only team UGA put up that kind of margin on was …. Tenn Tech. Gratz, Dawgs, way to prove yourselves. Highlights of UGAG Football 2009:

5) Losing to Kentucky and UGAG Fans flood the exits with a qtr to play and only down by 1 score.

4) Going 4-4 in SEC, mired in the middle of mediocrity.

3) Firing DC Willie Martinez after his best game of the year…Then CMR offering THE JOB NOBODY WANTS to 2 others, only to be DENIED…

2) A last-minute grab by the SHREVEPORT BOWL to avoid being selected by default for the WORST SEC BOWL, the Pizza Bowl…Wait a minute…Birmingham worse than SHREVEPORT? Don’t think so…

1) After UGAG Fans berate the Tech Fan Base year after year for not being able to fill up their stadium, UGAG only sells 7,000 tix for their SHREVEPORT BOWL…And many of those were to Aggie Fans who couldn’t find tix anywhere else.

Now the Top 2 Defenders on the team bolt to the NFL…

Its amazing. Been watching comments all year from our UGA brethren about GT football. I’ll give you UGA folks this: UGA pounded GT in its annual festival, and yes, GT got manhandled in the Orange Bowl (the score was not indicative of how bad they played against Iowa.) However, UGA was a HUGE disappointment in the SEC this year, and for you UGA folks to not concede that and continue to focus on GT’s shortcomings is validation of your limitations as football savvy fans. I grew up in GA and the fact that UGA has won ONE Natl Championship does not make you the envy of NCAA football. Get a life folks. There are greater concerns than the UGA vs. GT dynamic. OK?

OK, time for a reality check. I’ll grant UGA Nation that GT got manhandled by both UGA and Iowa the last two games. However, UGA was a huge disapointment in the SEC this year and for those of DAWG Nation not to acknowledge that is further evidence that UGA fans have a limited memory capacity. Whats worse is that UGA has won a total of ONE National Championship in their illustious history. I’m not saying that UGA is not a top program, but give me a break. GT has never been a top program, and its won 2 Natl Champs in its history. How about UGA fans concede that GT had a good year, the losses to the U, UGA, and Iowa notwithstanding. Lastly, get a life UGA fans. There are more important issues to focus on rather than who does what to who in NCAA football. The bottom line is that it is ENTERTAINMENT and a revenue stream for the school. Its not the end all be all.

The Mayor

January 6th, 2010
11:00 pm

The most disappointment from our loss in the Orange Bowl is that we have to hear for another whole year how our “gimmick offense” is outdated and teams can beat you when they have time to prepare for it. No, not at all. It’s just difficult to execute against NFL-sized and ready players on LSU and Iowa teams. We were outweighed and out-muscled in those two games, plain and simple. We don’t have the big, physical front men we need and they get exploited by teams loaded with big boys. It’s been a problem all season but too many penalties to start the game put off the rhythm for the whole evening and the quarterback that was getting pounded in the first half never fully recovered for the rest of the game. We didn’t get blown out and the only reasons it wasn’t an OT game were a missed FG and a blitzing defense letting a guy get through in the last 4 minutes of the game. It’s not like Iowa was a powerhouse and I actually thought the match-up was fairly even unlike some of the other bowl match-ups (see also UF-Cincy, UGA-A&M, etc). And Iowa fans are definitely classier and nicer than UGA fans any day. Co-mingled tailgating with them was actually fun. I also don’t see their fans trolling comment sections on any articles making even the slightest mention that Tech has a decent team.

If you want to post on football blogs, try actually watching the football game for more than watching scores. It’d make the exchanges much more useful and entertaining.

Mayor Dufus,

Watched the game…..enjoyed it thoroughly. 150 yards on offense to the other teams 400+ is getting manhandled. Parse your words how you want but it was a beat down. At no point during the beat down did Yech appear to be the best team. Glad you had fun in the Blue Carpet bowl of Miami. Looks like you girls get cold weather wherever you play. Only way to avoid that is play in the Ga Dome but that would mean having to face a decent SEC team and we all know how that will turn out for you girls.

The Mayor

January 6th, 2010
11:39 pm

And there Mr. Yech goes again spouting numbers like that means “I thoroughly watched the events that transpired during the game.” Football is not actuarial science. And if you actually read my content, I pretty much made the point that we were “manhandled” to borrow your term that was borrowed from the AJC headline. (Way to add value to the conversation. Thanks.) My point is that if you actually watched the game our linemen were getting tossed around like bushels of corn by big guys that probably grew up doing exactly that. They were big and physical and it disrupted our offensive flow. Same goes for LSU last year. And yes, even in the UGA game this season. It’s a problem that is being addressed but our coach needs more than two years to build a program.

The Mayor

I was really just saying that there’s not much else to do in Iowa than toss corn! It’s called a joke and it was actually borrowed from some Iowa fans we were tailgating with. I grew up poor with a single mom and lived in a trailer as well and only made it through Tech on scholarships and student loan. But if you still have a hangup about growing up poor then you can add whatever context you’d like. I forget that anything us Tech folks say has some ulterior and sinister motive just like all of the disparaging remarks I made about UGA’s team while I was writing about Tech football. Oh, I didn’t? But I did actually manage to work in a complement? But then I did write something about their fans when comparing to Iowa fans but it doesn’t go anywhere beyond “hostile vs. friendly,” pretty much like my reception on this comment roll has proven. But I will learn how to identify more quickly when I’m arguing with a wall!

Please let us know when Paul Johnson’s “own players” have arrived. He is quite fortunate that Chan Gailey left the cupboard well stocked. ACC 4-5 against The SEC all season, including the bowl games. FL beat FSU. So Car beat NC State and Climpsum Farmers. Alabama beat Virginia Tech. And, excuse me too, UGA beat GA tek 30-24 at their house.

Last year, the top ACC in Final AP Poll was Number 15, and 2 years before that, the top-ranked ACC team was Number 18 in the AP Poll. For 6 years now in a row the average AP Poll ranking for the BEST ACC team is Number 12. That’s 4 teams worse than an 8-team play-off format.

GA tek played 6 teams that did not even make a bowl game. No team in America played that many in 1 year.

It has been since President Dwight Eisenhower Ike was President that GA tek last won a Major Bowl Game. ACC is a lousy football conference.

The high school offense got 7 points last night.

7.

Now, I’ve heard it all. The ACC is good because it LOST to the Big 10 second best team.

There is only 1 team that might move up 1 place in the polls, and that would be Virginia Tech getting higher ranked than GA tek.

CHUMPS.

13 consecutive years both UGA and GA tek have been to a bowl game. UGA won 11 of those; GA tek 5.

5.

8 of last 9 and 15 of last 19 to have 60 wins by UGA over GA tek.

GA tek made Iowa look good. 7 points on Offense; what a total joke. Iowa gave up MORE to Northern Iowa, Arizona, Arkansas State, Indiana, and Northwestern to name but 5 really sorry teams – really sorry teams.

If GA tek had not played 6 teams who were not even in a bowl game, they lose those games. The ACC isn’t any good.

24-30 football.

66-73 men’s basketball.

50-56 women’s basketball.

GA tek fans, their coaches and their players, are POOR SPORTS.

You can clean up a pig, put a ribbon on its tail, spray it with perfume, but it’s still just a pig.

Mayor,

I’m not a Dawg fan and I have no particular animosity toward you. If you’re new to this blog, then I can understand why you are amazed by the vitriol displayed here by Georgia fans. You would have had to be here for the past year or so to understand that this is merely a response to the many obnoxious Tech fans behaving like the nouveau riche because they finally won a few ballgames.

As for Tech’s O-line problems — they aren’t going away. Not in 2 years… not in 20 years. You can’t run this style of offense with big, pro-set offensive linemen. The option offense functions as an equalizer that allows teams with smaller athletes to compete with the big boys by using precise pitch timing and misdirection to run ‘around’ the opponent’s defense, rather than running ‘through’ it. This is about as good as it gets. CPJ’s offense will probably assure you a winning season every year, rather than losing seasons in most years. That said, it is not a good scheme for winning against the very best competition that you will encounter. If it were, then you’d see teams like USC, Texas and Alabama using the same offensive strategy. After all, it’s not a new invention. The military academies run this offense for the same reason that Tech now does. It has everything to do with the type of players that can be recruited to play football at Tech.

A 10+ win season with an option offense is a big deal. Enjoy it! Like I said — this is as good as it gets.

There are a lot of CFB teams in the same boat as Georgia Tech. Tech’s OT win at home over Wake Forest should not be overlooked when evaluating their second-half performance. Two others: Jonathan Dwyer’s paltry rushing numbers vs. Georgia and Josh Nesbitt’s (abyssmal) two completions vs. Iowa.

“A 10+ win season with an option offense is a big deal. Enjoy it! Like I said — this is as good as it gets.”

That is simply an ABSURD statement. Both full-blown “spread option” type offenses, like PJ’s FLEXBONE, have won high school championships all over the country EVERY YEAR. PJ has already proven it can win Div II championships and an FBS Division Championship in YEAR 2 after being installed. Other college programs have consistently won, depending primarily on TALENT LEVEL, using pieces of spread, run-n-shoot & option (some parts more, some less) to win championships. Even many pro teams use spread option concepts to consistently WIN.

On any given Sat or Sun during the fall, there are no shortages of college and pro teams that consistently use spread option formations and tactics…And they’re usually the teams that lead their league in rushing and even total offensive production. But like ANY offensive or defensive scheme, it does NOT guarantee a win in every game…Nothing does.

People who refer to PJ’s Flexbone as “a high school offense that will never win in major college football” are simply ingorant buffoons that don’t understand HOW the offense works and WHAT went wrong when it doesn’t work. Defenses and talking heads say that “it’s assignment football” when talking about how to defend it. But like any other kind of offense, it’s also assignment football. It’s not from some other planet that can’t survive when it reaches Earth. Penalties, missed blocks, incorrect reads, superior talent and preparation against it are all ways that this offense can be shut down — WHEN IT IS SHUT DOWN. Most of the time defenses KNOW what they’re supposed to do, but they aren’t successful because of lack of discipline and execution.

After PJ’s first year of running this offense at GT, bloggers like you said things like 9, maybe 10 wins is the most you can get with an offense like this. So in year 2, now it’s “a 10+ win season” is as good as it gets. Meyer has already won TWO Nat’l Championships in the past 3 years using an offense very similar to PJ’s. And although it incorporates more run-n-shoot than the Flexbone, it’s still based in a spread option format.

If Nesbitt could’ve completed 1 or 2 long passes, the defense would’ve altered their scheme to compensate and the running game probably would’ve opened up…But this isn’t meant to be a woulda, coulda, shoulda thing. The point is THE FLEXBONE OFFENSE DID NOT FAIL against Iowa…Offensive EXECUTION is what failed. Any offense that does not execute properly is doomed, especially when confronted with BCS Bowl level defenses.

It’s not an “option” thing exclusively and to portray GT’s failings against LSU and Iowa as being such is just ingorant…Likewise, running the Flexbone offense in FBS Div 1 does NOT restrict GT or any other program to a certain number of wins per year. But lack of execution always will.

man- i have to admit- im surprised some of the people that post on here are smart enough to type. there are a lot of irrational idiots around here.

UGA fans- yes- you’ve dominated the rivalry game when looking at the past decade. Congrats on that. You also have to, however, look at the fact you are 1 and 1 against the ‘new look jackets’ with Coach Paul Johnson, and there is no legit reason to think this rivalry will not be a tough one for years to come (CALM DOWN! thats a GOOD THING for both of yalls fanbases!). (BTW- the ‘nerds’ “diss” is an odd choice, why not just say “hey! guys that make more money than me!!”).

Tech fans- UGA will bounce back from this year. They’ll be a fairly solid team soon.
