It was a very good year at Georgia Tech

Some random thoughts before I get on the plane to West Coast, where it is warm and sunny:

1. It’s been a very good year at Georgia Tech. While last night’s loss to Iowa in the Orange Bowl was a disappointment to Georgia Tech and its fans, at some point today it will be time to put it into perspective with the rest of the season. Georgia Tech ran into a big, athletic defense that had had over 40 days to prepare. When quarterback Ricky Stanzi was healthy, Iowa was the best team in the Big Ten and would have likely gone undefeated if he had been available for the Northwestern and Ohio State games.

In just two seasons Paul Johnson has made Georgia Tech a player again on the national stage with an ACC championship, a BCS bowl, and a win over Georgia. While it can’t be a great year unless you beat the state rival, this was a very good year at Georgia Tech.

2. Time to give the Big Ten its props. The Big Ten has gotten beat up during bowl season lately, going 1-6 last year. Iowa was the only Big Ten team to win a bowl last season when it beat South Carolina. But this season the Big Ten has posted four pretty impressive wins: Ohio State over Oregon to snap the Big Ten’s six-game losing streak in the Rose; Penn State over LSU in the Capital One; Wisconsin over what was supposed to be a faster, more athletic Miami in the Champs Sports; and finally Iowa over the ACC champs in the Orange. Northwestern had several chances to beat Auburn in the Outback before losing in overtime.

3. Kudos to Rich Brooks. The former Falcons assistant coach has decided to step down at Kentucky after seven seasons. One of his goals when he took the job was to leave the program in better shape than he found it. On that point he was a huge success. The program was devastated by NCAA probation when he got there and after struggling (9-25) in his first three seasons there were a lot of people who wanted to get rid of him. But athletics director Mitch Barnhart and President Lee Todd stuck with Brooks, who then took the Wildcats to four straight bowl games, something never done in the football history of the school. I will never forget Kentucky’s upset of No. 1 LSU in Lexington in 2007. In fact, that season I went to Lexington three times to watch Kentucky play and saw three great games, including a four-overtime loss to Tennessee which put the Vols into the SEC championship game over Georgia. Brooks turns the reins over to offensive coordinator Joker Phillips.

4. Bama looking for first win over Texas. There is a lot of history that says No. 2 Texas can beat No. 1 Alabama in tomorrow night’s BCS championship game. The two storied programs have met eight times in history with Texas holding a 7-0-1 mark:

Year———————Winner

1902———————Texas, 10-0 (Regular season)

1915———————Texas, 20-0 (Regular season)

1922——————–Texas, 19-10 (Regular season)

1947——————–Texas, 27-7 (Sugar Bowl)

1960——————–3-3 Tie (Bluebonnet Bowl)

1964——————–Texas, 21-17 (Orange Bowl)

1972——————–Texas, 17-13 (Cotton Bowl)

1981——————–Texas, 14-12 (Cotton Bowl)

I’ll be in Los Angeles on Thursday where I will give you my five burning questions about the BCS Championship game.

5. Urban Meyer wasting no time. For a guy who was supposed to be taking a leave of absence, Florida’s Urban Meyer has been a busy boy this week. He has lost four assistant coaches since the end of the regular season—Defensive coordinator Charlie Strong along with assistants Kenny Carter and Vance Bedford are all headed to Louisville. Offensive assistant Billy Gonzalez left before the bowl game to go to LSU. He has been replaced by Zach Azzani of Central Michigan. Meyer and interim coach Steve Addazio have hired former Gator assistant Stan Drayton, who left for Tennessee with some hard feelings in 2007 saying that he wanted to coach in a more conventional offense. Drayton is a good recruiter and Florida needs that to hold this class together. D.J. Durkin, who coached the past three seasons at Stanford, has been hired to coach the linebackers, which was Strong’s position. We’re still waiting to hear on the defensive coordinator’s job although published reports say that current assistant Chuck Heater has a shot.

Paul Johnson is a genius. His play calling against UGA, and now his offense stalls again in a bowel game. Lets face it you have to have a passing game. The option is not new and there is a reason it has gone in to the dust bin of history.

Tony, when is someone going to step up and tell it like it is about GT’s vaunted TO? Is it not obvious what happens to it when bigger, stronger, faster, teams are involved. The O line gets blown up and PJ can’t run this offense with bigger offensive linemen. It may work in the ACC but so far has been a dismal failure against the better conferences. Take that offense to the SEC, Big 10, or Big 12 and it would be a laughingstock.

Let’s go ahead and get this out of the way……….

The SEC was not as good as it has been in years past. Bamma and Florida were both really good, and LSU and Ole Miss were pretty good, but prone to having a bad game here and there. Miss State and Vandy were not very good, and the rest of the conference was very average.

The 85 Scholarship Rule continues to spread the talent across the football landscape.

The bar has been raised. You either learn how to jump higher or become satisfied with being a contender for the Limbo contest.

Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get get run over if you just sit there.

You gotta love these unemployed Georgia posters. They have all day to post because they can’t find a job except cooks at the Waffle House and they are bitter that Tech is the national power and no one, NO ONE, ever mentions Georgia. Georgia is the high school team and Mark Richt is a national joke who can’t even get a defensive coordinator to go there to be his next fall guy.

Hey Tony – you have a pretty large reader base of UGA fans, and not to mention you are an alumni, and over the last month and a half consisting of an upset win over the ACC champs and in state rival, the loss of a defensive coordinator, and a solid win in a bowl game…you write nothing about what has been going on with The Program in Georgia? Last night showed why GT is not The Program to watch in GA and never will be.

Last nights joyous embarrassment to Tech now seems like a double edged sword to me. If Tech has a good game, me thinks that the JR’s they have considering the NFL would have already made up their mind to get paid. Now I’m not so sure.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Dwyer comes back after last night’s performance. Hell, after last night, all the Jr’s in question will probably return as I’m sure NFL scouts were not impressed.

Hope I’m wrong though. If I am, can you imagine Tech without Dwyer and Thomas with that circus of an offense? The thought makes me giddy.

Tech laid a huge egg last night. The offense was horrible. Bama won 103 games in 10 yrs and 3 national titles with it in the 70’s, but its time has come and gone. It is no wonder that Texas, Oklahoma, and Alabama no longer use it. Yes, Tech is back on the national stage and all may be attributable to Coach Johnson, but last night’s performance will hardly keep Tech at the forefront of college football. It’s not that they lost to Iowa; it is the way that they lost.

Second Rate

January 6th, 2010
8:13 am

Georgia Tech is a second rate program who can’t man up and beat their downtrodden rival in its best year. Not only that, they get out hustled, out manned, and out coached in a basketball game in which UGA only has one player that could even sniff the bench at Tech. Great bulletin board material for Duke and Wake next year when you talked about winning the National Championship in 2010.

Tony, quit kissing up. The ACC is an atrocious embarassment of a conference and Tech would have been 6 and 5 at best in either the SEC or Big 10. The Orange Bowl has got to be disgusted with their ACC contract. They don’t bring fans and they can’t compete for a win.

Your praise of Tech is a stretch. Tech won 11 games and you make them sound like the greatest team of all time even though they were manhandled by the number two team in the big ten. Also, look at Tech’s schedule which was a cake walk compared to UGA’s. If Tech and UGA swapped schedules, UGA would have gone 11-3 easily and Tech would have gone 7-5 tops. You are not taking into account the ease of Tech’s schedule. The only quality win they had was against Va. Tech.

Erin Andrews Landing Strip…I tend to see Georgia mentioned every time someone runs down the GT season. Usually something like “dominated by Georgia” or “out-coached and out-talented by Georgia” or “not as physical as Georgia” and my favorite, “GT is still the #2 D-1 program in the state of Georgia behind perennial powerhouse UGA”. And now it looks like even the basketball team is beginning to overtake GT on the court…NICE!

Face it, UGA beat your team with a lame duck defensive coordinator in a down year for them (8-5 being average for GT) and is taking their time finding the right person to continue the UGA dominance over your “high school” program. The AJC likes to play it up that UGA is being turned down left and right by candidates because it sells papers and fuels the fires of little goobers like you.

Seems to me that GT is still trying to catch up. Good luck with that and your denial issues.

Tony
Don’t you think whenever you give a good defense 30 days to get ready for any type of offence (especially a gimmick one) they usually have the advantage in a bowl game. You can only do so much in a week but give a good team 4 weeks and they can stop it. It’s not like Tech could change their offense to surprise Iowa. Tech’s offense is run to set up a weak passing game and when the running game failed the passing game couldn’t carry them.

I’m really curious, I know this may seem a bit off topic, but to all the UGA people out there, can you tell me when the last time your team won a National Championship was? Cause Tech won in 1990 (well the game was in ‘91, but 1990 season). I don’t remember UGA winning one since then. I remember them being ranked #1 preseason and then getting embarrassed in their first game, but hey we can’t all be perfect like you.
