Breaking down the SEC Bowls

Let’s give Urban Meyer a day off and look at nine of the SEC bowl games. We’re not going to include the BCS championship game between Alabama and Texas today. We’ll have plenty of time to write about that later.

Clemson 21, Kentucky 13 (Music City): We may have seen Kentucky’s Rich Brooks coach his last game. If so, that will be a shame because Brooks has done one of the great coaching jobs in this league, getting the Wildcats to four straight bowls, winning three. With QB Morgan Newton, WR Randall Cobb, and TB Derrick Locke all returning, there is a future if Joker Phillips takes over.

Georgia 44, Texas A&M 20 (Independence): Mark Richt has now won 90 games in nine years as Georgia’s head coach. Now he faces the biggest offseason of his time in Athens as he must hire a new defensive coordinator and develop a starting quarterback for 2010. This was a very good win to start that process.

Tennessee vs. Virginia Tech (Chick-fil-A, Thursday): Both teams will want to run the ball and play defense. Don’t ask Jonathon Crompton to do too much against a defense ranked sixth in the country. Tennessee RB Montario Hardesty (1,306 yards rushing) vs. Virginia Tech RB Ryan Williams (1,538) will be worth watching. I’m giving a slight edge to Virginia Tech, because DC Bud Foster will force Crompton to make plays. Virginia Tech 17, Tennessee 14.

Auburn vs. Northwestern (Outback, Friday): Auburn’s offensive balance will be too much for the Wildcats. The Tigers scored 30 or more points in seven of their 12 games. If freshman running back Onterio McCalebb comes back for this game at full speed, Northwestern won’t be able to stop them. Auburn 31, Northwestern 21.

LSU vs. Penn State (Capital One, Friday): Look at the record and you’ll see that Penn State only beat one team (Northwestern) in the Big Ten with a winning record. LSU has too many athletes and wants to get to 10 wins. LSU 28, Penn State 14.

Florida vs. Cincinnati (Sugar, Friday): This looks like a repeat of the Georgia-Hawaii Sugar Bowl blowout of 2007. Aside from the emotion of Urban Meyer leaving/not leaving, Florida is just too athletic, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Cincinnati does not have its head coach, the interim head coach is leaving after this game, and the defense is not very good. They had to outscore people all season. It is SEC power and speed against a finesse team. While the Meyer flip-flop may be criticized elsewhere, it has served to refocus the Florida team after the loss to Alabama in the SEC championship game. Florida 38, Cincinnati 14.

Ole Miss vs. Oklahoma State (Cotton, Saturday): Based on preseason expectations, Ole Miss underachieved in 2009. The loss to Mississippi State was a huge disappointment and probably kept the Rebels out of a Florida Bowl. Now they are in the Cotton for the second straight season. The key is whether or not an Oklahoma State rushing defense (No. 6 nationally at 87.67 ypg, but that figure is misleading because Cowboys are 93rd in passing defense) can control Dexter McCluster. If McCluster goes over 100, the Rebels win. Ole Miss 24, Oklahoma State 20.

Arkansas vs. East Carolina (Liberty, Saturday):  Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett will use this game to stage his run at the Heisman Trophy in 2010. The key will be the Arkansas defense, which was last in the SEC, allowing 401.8 yards per game. East Carolina, coached by Skip Holtz, beat a high flying quarterback (Houston’s Case Keenum) for the Conference USA championship. Holtz has 22 seniors on this team which represents his first signing class. This will be a very good game. Let’s go against the grain and pick the Pirates. East Carolina 31, Arkansas 30.

South Carolina vs. UConn (Papajohns.com, Saturday):  After three straight losses to Tennessee, Arkansas, and Florida, South Carolina salvaged its season with an impressive win over Clemson (34-17), which played in the ACC championship game. South Carolina is a very young team with 15 freshmen and redshirt freshmen in the two deep. Coach Steve Spurrier believed that this year was going to turn a corner from a talent standpoint. South Carolina needs to win this game to set the table for next season. UConn has been through a tough season with the death of teammate Jasper Howard. The Huskies have a great running game with junior Jordan Todman (1,152 yards) and senior
Andre Dixon (967). South Carolina 24, UConn 20.

You are welcome, Independence Bowl officials. I am sure you wanted to thank the Dogs for appearing, and elevating, for one year at least, your bowl above its usual position in the bowl pantheon. Sorry to say we will not be back anytime soon, BCS bowls are waiting. Hunker down, SEC opponents, the Dogs are coming for you in 2010.

Unfortunately I live amongst too many bulldog fans with their typical over inflated view of their program. Every program has its fair share of overly bias fans, but it seems to me Georgia takes the cake in that department. It has soured my tastes for all things bulldog. Once they go and win another ten or so NC’s then maybe all their bark will be justified. Until then, I will pull for whoever they play.

BamaBoss, you are going to be cheering for losers a lot then. BTW, Alabama was just in the Independence Bowl (2 YEARS AGO).

Your point has no relevance, just as your football program. Ask anyone outside the state of Georgia about the dogs, and you will hear that it’s a pretty good football program, but not a powerhouse. Never was and never will be.

As an SEC fan, I’m definitely excited to watch the Chick-fil-a, Capital One and Cotton bowls. Look like great matchups on paper. I wouldn’t be shocked if the SEC goes 9-1 or 8-2 in the bowls.

Alabama football versus Georgia football. There is no comparison.

Fran Tarkenton and Elway?? What? %$#@

December 29th, 2009
1:11 pm

To say “look at who the SEC plays in their bowl games is how they win” bowl game is as dumb as saying that Fran Tarkenton and John Elway ( at one point ) were “losers because they never won” a Super Bowl ( Tarkenton went about 4 times and lost) as a QB. Dumb that is. How great were the Vikes for being there in the first place over many years IS the point. There are some empty heads on this site friends. Dumb asses. Obamarons all.

The teams that get i-n-v-i-t-e-d to the various bowls are guests of the bowl sponsor. The KEY POINT IS the number of SEC bowl caliber teams year in and year out and over the decades. Geeeeeeez there are some dumb guys that try to offer their opions here.

That the SEC wins more than not is due to the region being in love with football, the local midget, middle and high school interests and the coaches and yes, the money made by it all.

Tradition says it all. SEC tradition that is.
goooooooooo Gogs.

Bamaboss, Look at my previous post on valuable college teams. Looks like UGA is only behind Florida and Texas in merchandise sells in college football. I am proud Bama is back in the NC game, it’s been way too long. Good Luck. But, if UGA is not known outside of GA, then a hell of a lot of merchandise flows through Ga.

Bamaboss, oh don’t pull the “just ask anyone” card. Please, not that. You are so powerful with your words, I feel bad. Just because the Bulldawgs have beaten you 3 or last 4 games, dont’ be too upset, you still have all those made up National Championships before you were born. Just hold on to those.

The biggest win or loss was with the Dawgs alum. For a school whose alum could purchase 100,000 tickests, only 6800 were purchased. The alum have made a huge statement. I hope CMR is listening. Improvements with special teams was dramatic. The defense also seemed better. I respect CMR greatly and I hope he is with UGA a long time but I also hope, that he addresses problems immediately and not wait until the problem becomes nuclear before he corrects it.

One other comment, the SEC is the finest conference in college football and we should all be rooting for the SEC team in all the bowls.

Go Dawgs!! Go SEC!!!

Bamaboss,

I’m an “overly biased” UGA fan, just as I suspect you’re an “overly biased” Bama fan. UGA is not a powerhouse as you so politely pointed out. We are a very good program, but not an elite program. That is what we are striving for and I believe we’re almost there. We have some of the best homegrown talent in the nation. Unlike Alabama and Auburn, we don’t have to go into other states and steal talent due to the fact Bama has none of it’s own. Congrats on your season, but don’t get too full of yourself. UGA is a sleeping giant and if we’re ever able to close off the border, not only will we thrive, but your program will definitely suffer.

Bamaboss, when you say no comparison between Alabama Football and UGA Football I say you are wrong. Alabama lived on a man that had passed away over 20 years ago, save one year, until Saban arrived. Plus, in Ga. we have professional teams as well, not like Alabama that has (2) college teams and a twice a year NASCAR race.

UGA has 2 National Titles. If we used Tech methods of claiming titles, we could easily say we have 12 as well.

Georgia high schoolers know a winner when they see one. Just like Spurrier said, Georgia gets all of those five star recruits and then something just happens to them.

Georgia has all those great high school players. Has one of the great campuses and football stadiums in the land. Has an $80M annual athletic budget and celebrates after beating a 6-6 A&M team. One national championship. Underwhelming at best.

As a football fan I love Bear Bryant. He cheated like hell, but he was the best there ever was. Bear went 9-3 against UGA. He’s the reason why Bama is up 11 wins in the head-to-head. Without him the series would be basically even.

Bamaboss

You can have him. Saban calls the shots on defense anyway.

Alabama sucks

If Bama had to play with their own pathetic homegrown talent they’d be forced to join the ACC in hopes of just being able to compete.

And if Georgia/Bama played every year while Bryant was there, he would have been 20-4 and we would really see the dominance of Tide football.

I, as many do,watch as many high school games as possible & love seeing the GA young men achieve in college and the NFL. I root for UGA but am not so blinded that I did not realize when UGA played Tech, that Tech was a shell of what they were before injuries set in. Some, no many, of you people posting here need to find something constructive to do. Even with their depleted OLine, Tech beats Iowa.

I believe UGA has done much better then Bamer this decade. Oh, and nice showing last year against Utah. Was that a “real SEC team?” What a loser.

elcubismo……well said. These “sec apologists” are amazing. When clemson beats usuc, which is most years, as they say you can look it up, its because they are beat up by the sec schedule.
