As expected, Urban Meyer announced Sunday afternoon that he has changed his mind and will not resign as Florida’s head coach after Friday’s Sugar Bowl game with Cincinnati.
Meyer will take an “indefinite leave of absence” from his duties as head coach and offensive coordinator Steve Addazio will serve as interim head coach. Meyer will not put a timetable on his return as head coach but he did indicate that believed he would be the head coach when the 2010 season rolls around.
Based on conversations I’ve had today with people close to the situation, Meyer told his family on Christmas night that he was going to resign as coach. The school put out a press release on Saturday that Meyer would be stepping down for the sake of his health. But things really changed in the next 24 hours.
The Gators practiced in Gainesville this morning before getting on the plane to go to New Orleans. Meyer met with athletics director Jeremy Foley after practice and discussed the possibility of him taking a leave of absence instead of resigning.
The fact is that Meyer’s wife, Shelley, Foley, and president Bernie Machen had put the idea of a leave of absence on the table a while back. Meyer told them he didn’t think he could do that and that just walking away was the best thing for everybody involved.
Meyer said he had a change of heart after Sunday morning’s practice. He decided to reconsider the leave of absence idea and to see if he could make it work.
Whether or not he can change his approach to coaching and come back remains to be seen. If he backs off his intense approach to the job, does he lose the edge that made him so successful? That is the challenge for Meyer in the weeks and months to come.
This is a good result for Meyer, but why would Florida do this? First of all, this buys Florida some time and holds this recruiting class together–at least for now. According to various reports, word has already been given to the players committed to Florida that Meyer will eventually come back as head coach. But it is a good six weeks between now and national signing day and you can bet that opposing coaches will hammer Florida about the uncertainty surrounding the program. There will be some defections.
There is another element of risk on Foley’s part. If Meyer does not come back for the 2010 season, this decision could set the Florida program back for a couple of years. But if Meyer comes back fit and rested, Foley has managed to retain one of the very best coaches in the game. If I’m Foley I believe it is a risk worth taking.
By the way. How would you like to be the University of Cincinnati football team? Wonder if they will get any coverage this week?

Now, we watch the 2010 recruits slowly back away. This “i’m gone, naaaah, I am here but be back later” stuff is a joke done only to bolster recruits. They do not appreciate uncertainty. Now that his um, ah, “health is an issue” ( see Tiger ) recruits will back away in droves.

As a big BullDawg fan I ain’t fond of the Gators but I am hopefull that Coach Myer can get his health issues under control and continues to coach at Florida. When the Dawgs get back on track I want it to be against the best and Urban is one of the best.
CPJ is the best coach Tech has had since Bobby Dodd and we can handle him with the worst team we have had in 13 years but we got a lot more to prove to show we are back on track; being competitive against Florida is one of the measures of our program.
By the way… it’s A-She-She 0 to 2 in bowl games so far. Tech is the King of nothing.

Congrats to tech’s Orange bowl trip. I know that if you have not been to a major bowl in 43 years, it must be fun. Think about all those EMPTY SEATS when you are in a driving rain down in Miami and be very, very careful in Miami/Dade as that is a very dangerous town. Sort of like Atlanta’s N Avenue on a Saturday night with two red jersies running for 376 yards. Woooooooooooosh went those red jersies. UGHHHHHHHHHH went Dwyer and Nesbitt whne scaked or hit. “Ugh, that hurts” they moaned.
Hit em in the face, screamed CPJ. Woooooooooooooosh, went Caleb and Wuahsuan.

I would think this would be WORSE for them. The program would be in flux for who knows how long, and they would be preventing from hiring an actual head coach to lead the program. The OC will be their head coach? How does that match up to other top-notch SEC coaches?! Hmm…

If your team goes to its’ first major bowl game in 43 years, and you can’t even sell 10,000 tickets to see it, then you have nothing to brag about. Boise State is closer to being a major football program than Ga. Tech. If they downsize seating at Bobby Dodd any more it will be ineligible to host a high school playoff game.

It’s damn hard to leave Florida. You work for the best boss in the world (Jeremy Foley) and have unlimited resources and support. You coach in the legendary Swamp and have some of the best weather in the world. You’re an hour from beautiful beaches and 2 hours from world famous major attractions. You have a University president who supports the program 100% and understands it’s importance to bringing in money and reuniting alumni. You spend your days on a beautiful campus around vibrant young people in one of the best academic institutions and medical facilities in the country. Many old Gators like myself go back to retire and spend their final years there.

I wonder if the Orange Bowl ratings will be as low as the ACC Championship Game? After all this is absolutely the most inconsequential of all the BCS bowl games. And all you Techies want to talk about where UGA is playing. The bottom line is that you made the BCS by default. I am quite sure that the Orange Bowl wished it had an alternative. As for you 11-2 GEORGIA TECH in ORANGE BOWL all that needs to be said (and it has been said ad nauseum, but needs to be restated time and time again) is 30-24 and 8-1.

Looking for a screwball program? Go to Florida. Donovan leaves but doesn’t. Meyer leaves but doesn’t. Although they had a team, the team never won anything until 1990 after being the tail dragger of the SEC for over 60 years! And this is Urban’s MO wherever he’s been. He stays around just long enough to win with other folks’ players and a few exceptional players and then runs for the door as soon as it looks like things are about to get tough. “Tim’s leaving? Strong’s leaving? Mullen left?…I’m gone.” Here’s one UF fan who is thinks it’s time to clean house and get started again with new and more dedicated leadership. Best wishes but you only get one chance to leave should be the rule.

First off, I don’t care what decision CUM makes, we wish him all the best health.
An honest UF fan will tell you that they were sh***ing their pants when CUM made the initial announcement yesterday. The funny thing is that UF fans talk about tradition as if college football began in the 1990’s. I have all the respect in the world for what UF has done lately but their fans are too ignorant to discuss serious college football.
This is the season that UGA needed to have in order to finally get some much needed changes. UGA football has become too dull and needs an off-season spark to get things going again.
With that being said, the worst UGA team beat the best GT team. I was expecting the ass whooping all Nerds had been talking about.GT cannot sell out their Orange Bowl, and another team has to cough up the money to get their crap-mobile to the game. All of GT fanbase should be embarrased.

I was in shock yesterday…don’t know what I am in today. Don’t know how this impacts the program other than I hope Meyer can get away, get healthy, and then come back and continue being the great HC he is. Any recruits who don’t understand the situdation can go elsewhere. We want players who understand what GatorNation is all about…teamwork and family…and, of course, playing for championships. I am glad we have a chance of getting one of the top championship coaches back some day. If not, then he showed he is a part of GatorNation by giving it a try. Welcome back, Coach Meyer. God speed to you in your physical and mental recovery process…enjoy your time with family. GatorNation is always there for you if you decide to come back full time.

This flip flop will cause more problems for Florida recruiting than if Meyer had just gone ahead and stepped down. Florida can’t get Mullen to leave Miss State to be Florida’s new head coach under these conditions and Meyer probably won’t come back in two years any way. Meyer is a multi millionaire and doesn’t have to do this. His ego won’t let him go out easy.

Why would it matter if the media turned on him? They don’t pay his salary. They don’t control his job. Heck, they don’t even vote in the B[C]S now – remember they pulled the AP poll out of the formula – so they don’t even control his national championship hopes if he has an undefeated or 1-loss team. Also remember that Billy Donovan did this same thing….and he was – and is – at Florida too. That arrangement ened up working out. I don’t see why this one won’t.

Dennis…how can freshman stand around for a couple of years watching others play??? Sorry, but Florida does not lose 90% of its offense. They are going to lose a QB, a TE, a WR, and 2 OL. That is less than 50% from what I know about math. Plus, they get back 2 injured WRs, an experienced and talented QB in Brantley (every media type has said he is currently the 3rd best QB in the SEC), and all their running backs. Plus, the OL is very deep with a lot of talented freshman, rsfreshman, sophs, and jrs. And the D will be very good again next year. So continue to dream…and your worst nightmare just happened in your dream when Meyer announced his change of heart. Adazio will do a great job next year. Now the Gators just need to announce their DC and get one new assistant coach to replace strong as the LBs coach…probably Willie Martinez (who will immediately go to South Florida and help get all the recruits back in the fold). Go Gators.

Tony,. this does more damage to UF’s recruiting than help. I’m not sure what you’re thinking when you write that this is to hold their recruiting class together. Coaches are now going to walk into the living rooms, telling recruits that UF’s program is officially in limbo. Who knows if Meyer is coming back? Who knows if he’s going to coach? What direction does the offense take now, is it spread option or do they insert a pro style? What was a bad day for UF has become a complete and utter trainwreck.

This is a very bad situation for Florida. With Urban stepping back from the program, but not stepping away, he will feel even more stress than ever before. How can he not? If he sees things not going the way he would do them, then he will feel guilt, frustration, and the need to micromanage everything Gator football again. Recruits will be confused, fans will be angry, and Gator Nation will be calling for him to come back full-time after the first game they lose without him.

What a putz!!!
He and the whole damned Lizard program have become the Brett Favres’ of college football. ALWAYS in need of seeing their name in print.
This will (and it should) come back to haunt them in the upcoming signing class, any athlete who is still on the fence about committing to either FLA or (insert school name) will surely take a long hard look at what the hell is going on in Gainesville and most will probably sign elsewhere. Same could happen with the “committments” already on the white board in Criers office.

Call this what it is….the timing of this announcement is nothing more than a publicity stunt on the part of everyone involved at Florida. Sure Meyer steps away for a while, possibly just delaying his final departure, but this display is disgusting. This all could’ve been handled after the bowl game, but that wouldn’t have triggered a national firestorm now would it? Unless you are blinded by a love for orange or have hitched your wagon to the SEC and it’s darlings (see ESPN) you should be able to see this for what it is…nothing more than an attention grabbing ploy by Meyer and everyone associated with the Florida program.

This decision, or lack of one, is bad for Florida. How are potential recruits expected to commit to a program when they don’t know who is going to be there, or who is running it. Either Meyer is the head coach, or he isn’t. You can’t be just a little pregnant. If Meyer is merely “cutting back”, then he isn’t doing himself or the program any good. Meyer’s health issues can only improve if he is TOTALLY removed from all coaching pressure, and we all know that that is now NOT the case. What kind of deal is this anyway? Is Meyer just going to sit at home on his duff like an entertainer, and let the roadies, producers and promoters set everything up and do all the work, then he magically appears onstage when the lights go up? He isn’t going on the road to recruit, or do spring practices, but yet fully expects to be on the sideline for the first game next season? What kind of crap is this anyway? Get all the way in or get all the way out Urban. This straddling type of situation isn’t good for anybody, and grossly unfair to the guy who WILL be carrying the water over the next nine months. Not good. Do the right thing and retire already! Get yourself healthy, and do the family thing for awhile (see Bill Cowher). You can always come back whenever you’re ready, anywhere you want. You can’t do anything if you’re dead.

Hope Urban gets better. A tough coach to beat but good for the game.
I do find amusing that every article ends up with the same characters from GT & UGA
insulting each other. I remember when the U (UM) won their 1st championship in 1983 Florida
printd a bumper sticker which read “UF 30, National Champions 0″.
With GT & UGA, one side claims the other is irrelevant but appears to be obsessed with them. Lat year GT beat UGA’s pre-season #1 ranked team and this year an unranked UGA team beats a ranked GT team. Go figure! But that’s what makes college football so unique.
In the meantime, as always, I guess we will have to skip a bunch of classless & immature comments on every blog before reading any meaningful remarks related to the subject matter.

If Meyer’s health was serious enough to drive him to resign…
Then this “leave of absence” is just a smokescreen.
They don’t want to lose recruits.
If I’m going to Florida to play for Meyer, I back away.
Too much uncertainty in this.
Even if I just love the school, I have to wonder who the next coach will be.
If Meyer’s health was bad enough to resign, then it is a real possibility he will not be there.

As I’ve stated before, the ???Gators??? have nowhere to go but down.
Initially I was laughing out loud at coach ???Meyer??? having to be hospitalized for a loss-induced anxiety attack. I no longer laugh as I know now it may be more serious. And I wish him the best regarding his health.
As for the ???Gators???, the limbo-like lack of certitude can only spell trouble on many levels for an “indefinite” period of time. At this I am laughing again.
Even if ???Meyer??? returns he will not be %100.
The ???Gators??? will still be a worthy opponent for other SEC teams but their rein as superteam is over. Gone. History.

Just get over it, Dawgs fans. Not only are you NOT at the top of the SEC, the smart money is on the Vols if Urban doesn’t return! That distant dot on the horizon? It’s the SEC Championship game. Urban Liar strikes again! Between this UF scuz and the KiffyKat at UT, the SEC is sinking to some new lows. This is so perfect for UGA to clean up on UF’s and UT’s transgressions!
I love it……UF and UT scraning to be loved. So cute! The recruits will figure out these two sketchy characters out.

There is no positive way to spin this for UF. Either Meyer made a hasty decision and is keeping the university in limbo as to which way he will go OR this is just a ploy to calm the nerves of recruits until they sign that paper. You hope it’s more of the former. . . . the latter is underhanded.
If Urban is really considering coming back in 2010, how will he be different? How does a coach, who is competitive by nature and is certainly a creature of habit, how does this guy go from worrying about EVERY DETAIL to just suddenly relaxing in the job. . . ?? I just think it’s impossible.

What a joke Urban Meyer has turned out to be. Personally ,I do believe the man is one hell of a coach, etc. but to do this back and forth crap is unbecoming at best for anyone in his position. I really didnt like the news when he FIRST retired, because beating him is something all bulldogs want in the worst way, especially me! and I am thrilled now we might have a chance to do just that. But to play this up in the air routine just for the sake of trying to hoodwink a few high school ball players is enough to make me want to puke! I try not to make too many predictions, or say, mark it down stuff, but just watch, Fla. will lose a huge number of top notch players, because of his shananigans, and they will also have their butts handed to them alot next year! And to think he had me feeling sorry for him! what a joke, You cant have it both ways Urban

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens staged another classic in what’s fast becoming one of the NFL’s best rivalries. The Ravens narrowly prevailed in a physical 20-17 overtime victory over the Steelers in a big game for both teams. when a new NFL season is bound to begin, you will notice that these replica jerseys get sold like hotdogs at various local sports apparel shops. More and more people are trying to get their hands on some NFL replica football jerseys. If you are one among those hardcore football fans you may find yourself in great difficulty when trying to buy NFL replica football jerseys at a nearby sports shop. Either you find ill-fitting sizes for you or you don’t find any replicas at all because they are already sold out.

Urban Meyer
LOST :
Dan Mullen
Charlie Strong
Tim Tebow
His Offensive Coordinator
His Defensive Coordinator
His “Quarterback”
UGA won MORE against Tim Tebow than we did when Tim Tebow was NOT there.
UGA won MORE against Urban Meyer than we did when Urban Meyer was NOT there.
Steve Addazio.
Just so I have this straight (today), Steve Addazio is the Head Football Coach at Florida.
Whom does Steve Addazio hire to be his Defensive Coordinator ?
Whom does Steve Addazio hire to be his Offensive Coordinator ?
So, if Urban Meyer does not come back for like Game 5, which is Alabama, does that count as a LOSS for Urban Meyer ?
Urban Meyer had a really soft schedule this season, against four (4) teams not even in a bowl game. (GA tek had 6 and UGA 3.)
Next season, the schedule cannot be as easy as it was this year, with LSU beating no ranked team and that the only win by Florida this year over a ranked team.
If you compare Dan Mullen last year to Steve Addazio this year :
Mullen 30 Addazio 23 Tennessee
Mullen 63 Addazio 41 Kentucky
Mullen 51 Addazio 13 LSU
Mullen 49 Addazio 41 UGA
Mullen 42 Addazio 27 Vanderbilt
Mullen 56 Addazio 24 South Carolina
Mullen 45 Addazio 37 Florida State
Mullen 31 Addazio 13 Alabama
8 Common Opponents with Dan Mullen as Offensive Coordinator last year to compare with Steve Addazio Offensive Coordinator this year.
138 points better than Steve Addazio was Dan Mullen.
17 points a game on Offense Florida was better with Dan Mullen than Steve Addazio.
If there were even 1 of the 8 games where Steve Addazio actually did better of the 8 common opponents, that would be something at least. There isn’t.
If it were close, like 3 points in just 1 game mind you between the 2 “Offensive Coordinators” that would be something. There isn’t. It’s huge 17 points WORSE with Steve Addazio than with Dan Mullen
17 points per game WORSE with Steve Addazio than with Dan Mullen.
I do not think Urban Meyer is happy at all with the job turned in by Steve Addazio a lifetime Tight Ends Coach out of Central Connecticut State with zero NFL experience as a player or as a coach.
I cannot be the only 1 to have this jump out at me that Steve Addazio did 17 points per game WORSE “replacing” Dan Mullen.
Now, Steve Addazio is the Head Football Coach at Florida – hiring the replacement for Dan Mullen and for Charlie Strong.
Look, Urban Meyer’s Sugar Bowl Press Conference clearly made it obvious that Urban Meyer has a cyst and has lost over 25 lbs. hoping to eat New Orleans Creole and gain some weight and color back. It was also very obvious that Urban Meyer cannot string together a whole sentence. Urban Meyer was surprised and unprepared for the question that we want to know who is going to now replace Charlie Strong. Steve Addazio ? Or, Urban Meyer ? Uh, er, I don’t know, hmmm; let me think; er, uh, not sure who will be hiring the replacement at Defensive Coordinator for Charlie Strong, but the players made we come back to Florida to be their coach and are happy I did. They don’t care about my health so obviously serious. I am going to be coming back and be the head football coach at Florida in Game 1. I don’t want the LOSSES to be counted against just Steve Addazio. I have worked at 3 places for 2 years each and as soon as the players that made all 3 great were GONE, so was I. This is what I do. No, wait, Steve Addazio is the Head Football Coach at Florida, hang it that he is 17 points per game WORSE as Offensive Coordinator (over his head) than Dan Mullen. Who is hiring Charlie Strong’s replacement at Defensive Coordinator for Florida ? Uh, er, uh, I don’t know – but, not me, I am on leave. I am not on leave yet. Not until Friday. Friday I go on leave. Recruiting Signing Day is less than a month later. I will be Head Football Coach in Game 1 next year so the LOSSES count against me (So, I can cry again after LOSING.) But, between Friday and Signing Date, I have NO IDEA who is going to hire the replacement for Charlie Strong.
Circus ?
This is NOT a circus.
Clearly, Urban Meyer needs our support. The guy is in real bad health, clearly and obviously. His mind is not there. He actually told the Press Conference that he has not been back to the hospital “But I had them checked out, each one.”
Steve Addazio perennial tight ends coach, 17 points per game WORSE than Dan Mullen, is the Head Football Coach at Florida starting Friday. This is so clearly a health issue from every piece of evidence watching and listening to Urban Meyer today try to formulate what in the hell is different today from yesterday when he says he has thought about this ALL YEAR LONG. Best of Luck Urban Meyer, Please take the time off and get your health better by GETTING AWAY from what we all Love You For As 1 of the Top Football Coaches Ever.
Urban Meyer is NOT going to be back for Game 1. I wish he were. He is not. He can’t. He also cannot hire the replacement for Charlie Strong that needs to be happening already. And, honestly, he needs to replace Steve Addazio who is NOT 1 of the coaches Urban Meyer has on his staff from Boling Green to Utah to Florida. Steve Addazio is a nobody tight ends coach with no NFL experience as player or coach who is 17 points per game WORSE “replacing” Dan Mullen.
FACT : Florida does NOT have a coach, none.

well your last paragraph is the only meaningful one. this is all about florida and the perch it was knocked off of by alabama.
no doubt meyer needs rest. but to hold a press conference to say i’m going to take a leave? espn covers it like it was a national emergency, and so do all of you writers. how about alabama getting the press instead? it is all about recruiting and florida wanting the attention that belongs to someone else. you all built florida up all year and it didnt work out, no other coach in the country would have gotten the press of this mess. Meyer, rest up and get back to work but stay out of the news while Alabama and texas play in the game you think you should be in.

I’ve been partying hard here for 2 days–with some real hot women at the country music bars and great PBR specials. And the Motel 6 is the finest I’ve seen, with running water, which even gets hot sometimes!! Even better, at the game today, I heard you get a free spitcup at the gate–they think of everything here! Gotta go—more partying till game time and another cold PBR!!!

[...] This is a good result for Meyer, but why would Florida do this? First of all, this buys Florida some time and holds this recruiting class together–at least for now. According to various reports, word has already been given to the players committed to Florida that Meyer will eventually come back as head coach. But it is a good six weeks between now and national signing day and you can bet that opposing coaches will hammer Florida about the uncertainty surrounding the program. There will be some defections. Really? Making millions of dollars a year to coach kids playing a game is stressful? Seriously? I mean, Urban Meyer seems like a great guy and I don’t mean to be insulting, but it cracks me up the way we all deify these occupations, when, while challenging, I don’t think can be called stressful. Being a cop? stress. Nurse? stress. Wondering if you can pay yur mortgage while working extra shifts at night at a plant? stress. Getting paid millions to coach kids? come on. Man. Up.

Well, color me surprised, shocked, in fact . . . and, no, I didn’t see this one coming. Not at all.
I am glad to hear Urban Meyer is returning to Florida. I hope it is soon, but I also hope that whatever health issue has manifested itself that Meyer has the good sense to take care of it before he returns full-time. Meyer has done a lot for the University of Florida and football program in the last five years, and Jeremy Foley and Bernie Machen should insist that Meyer be genuinely well before Meyer returns to the sidelines. Frankly, it’s the least the university should do for Meyer.

I hope U. Meyer truly understands that you get only one life, one body, and one blood family. More and more guys get wrapped up in their jobs and find out later down the road that their blood families mean more to them than that job. I don’t think Urban can change. He is who he is.
Part of this to blame is the AD Foley. He is more concerned about the money and wins Mr. Meyer is bringing to Florida than than Mr. Meyer’s health. You can’t tell me that you have worked with this guy for all this time and didn’t see the signs of this coming along? And he call himself one of Mr. Meyer’s friend? I bet a million days his wife and kids tried to tell Mr. Meyer to slow down. The FA administration didn’t.
The majority of the silly college fans (both Georgia and Florida) of both schools don’t care about the toll coaching does to men’s families let alone the coaches themselves. Look I am avid GA fan, but even I know success comes with a price. If Urban Meyer wants continue to go for national championships and die very soon in the process, by all means go. I just don’t want to hear nothing from all of your fans of FA if you don’t encourage your coach to be more concerned about his body and family than the football program.
Urban my man, please slow down. If you don’t your body will do it for you. And believe me, there is no opposition team that will destroy you than your own body and intermediate family.

All of this talk about recruiting is pure conjecture by many folks whose only passion is to hate UF because of the success we have had with Urban. This matter is internal to UF, and Urban’s health concern is a private matter as it is for everyone in our country. Shelley Meyer, UF President Machen and AD Foley plus the doctors at Shands have a handle on the situation.
My advice to all of the Gator Haters is to be more concerned about your own teams rather than hypothesizing on the situation at UF. Coach Meyer and his wife will figure out what is best for them. If he gets out of coaching, he is still a GATOR. If he fixes his health problem and recharges his battery, he could come back with a vengeance and be better than ever.
This is a UF problem, and the Gator Nation does not give a hoot what the so called sports expert at the AJC, ESPN and Gainesville Sun think. We especially do not care what Dawg, Vol, etc. fans think because it is simply none of their business.

I personally am puking sick and tired of the Tech fans squalking about their little pea brains. The only thing they can revert to when losing is their (lack of) intelligence. These are some of the most dog stupid people I have ever met in my life. I have seen nothing good come out of that university in a long time and absolutely no accomplishments in recent history except providing a conduit to pump good American technology (invented at MIT) into the hands of our enemies.

Now what do you think would have happened if Clemson had played the SEC runner up? I believe that makes the SEC 5 and the A-she-she 3 so far with the A-she-she wins against Miss St., Vanderbilt and Kentucky by the A-she-she’s two best teams.. If you guys want to brag about that then have at it. It just shows how desperate that conference is for respect.

Tony, According to ESPN a high school recruit said he talked to Myers on Monday and Myers told him he would be back in Aug. Is this over or why has no one commented on this since ESPN carried the kid live from the all star game saying he had talked to Myers on Monday
