Ten fun facts about the SEC Championship Game

Ten fun facts that you may or may not know about Saturday’s SEC championship game:

1. This will be the 41st time that the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the Associated Press poll have met. Of the previous 40 meetings, 23 have come in the regular season and 17 have been in bowl games. Of those games, the No. 1 team has a record of 24-14-2.

2. Since Florida quarterback Tim Tebow made “The Promise” after last season’s loss to Ole Miss, Florida has won 22 straight games. In those 22 games Florida has outscored its opponents 907-259.

3. Alabama doesn’t appear to have many weaknesses but here is one. Or at least it is a concern. The Crimson Tide is ranked 116th nationally in defending kickoff returns. Teams are averaging 25.56 yards per kickoff return against Alabama.  Alabama, interestingly enough, has kicked off 82 times (68 have been returned) this season. Only four teams in the country have kicked off more: Boise State (99), Houston (95), TCU (90), and Florida (86).

4. Alabama’s Javier Arenas is one of the best punt returners in the country, averaging 16.64 yards per attempt. But chances are Arenas will not  return the ball much against Florida. The Gators only have allowed only four punts to be returned against them all season for a grand total of 13 yards. No other team in the country has allowed five or less punts to be returned against them this season.

5. This will be the 18th SEC championship game. Seven times in the past 17 years the winner of this game has gone on to win the national championship: 1992, 1996, 1998, 2003, 2006, 2007 and 2008. Two other times (1995, 1997) the winner has played in a game for at least a share of the national championship.

6. Alabama running back Mark Ingram suffered a hip-pointer last Friday against Auburn and was held to a season-low 30 yards rushing. Ingram, however, needs just 43 yards against Florida to set the school record for rushing yards in a season. Bobby Humphrey ran for 1,471 yards on 236 attempts in 1986. Ingram, a sophomore, has 1,429 yards on 221 attempts.

7. Only one running back this season—Dennis Johnson of Arkansas—has rushed for over 100 yards against the Florida defense. Florida is No. 8 nationally in rushing defense, giving up only 89.2 yards per game and 2.9 yards per rush. Florida has held four straight opponents to under 100 yards rushing. Alabama is No. 2 nationally in rushing defense, allowing only 77.08 yards per game and 2.62 yards per attempt. No running back has gone over 100 yards against Alabama’s defense this season. LSU’s Charles Scott (83) and Mississippi State’s Anthony Dixon (81) were the only two backs to run for more than 80 yards against Alabama.

8. Think it will be a low scoring game? Of course. Florida leads the nation in scoring defense, giving up 9.83 points per game. Alabama is No. 2 scoring defense, allowing 10.83 points per game. Florida has allowed only 11 touchdowns this season, four fewer than any other team in the nation. Alabama, Nebraska, and Penn State are tied for second place, allowing only 15 touchdowns.

9. Both of these teams are very good when it comes to stopping third down conversions. Florida is No. 2 nationally in third down defense. Opponents have converted only 43 of 164 third downs (26.22 percent). Opponents have converted only 48 of 166 third downs against Alabama (28.92 percent), which is No. 5 in the nation. In case you’re wondering, TCU leads the nation in third down defense. Opponents have completed only 46 of 176 third downs (26.14 percent) against the Horned Frogs.

10. Florida has nine appearances in the SEC championship game, more than any other school. Alabama has six appearances in the SEC championship game, all of them against Florida. Alabama is 2-4 in those games, winning in 1992 and 1999. The other schools who have appearances in this game are Tennessee (5), LSU (4), Georgia (3), Arkansas (3), Auburn (3) and Mississippi State (1). Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, South Carolina, and Kentucky have never appeared in the SEC championship game.

Hey Tony Jabloni – get ready for your beloved Dawgs to get the beatdown of a lifetime on the Flats. UGA and the SEC are the most overhyped team and conference I have ever seen. There is a new sheriff in town, so thank God and Greyhound that the worst coach in Tech football history is gone forever – hallydamnlooyah – just the beginning!

Well, that’s what m WOULD have said if the score had not been 30 – 24 via the Dawgs beat down of a Tech (well, since that is what most of the Tech fans called their measly 3 point win last year) last Saturday night – that is, he would have said that if he would come out of hiding!

I think ole Tony has it in for Kiffin and his boys at Tennessee. Not giving them a mention hardly at all now. You would think that Mr. college football would have researched a bit and seen that Tenn was the FIRST team to win a BCS national Championship.Of course that was against a FSU team that was favored by 7 points EVEN with a backup QB. But since FSU didn’t play good that nite I guess Tony doesn’t count it as legitimate, plus Tenn. got a break in one or two more games that year. And throw in the fact that UGA didn’t play well that game in Athens when Tenn beat UGA 22-3. I can now see why he didn’t include Tenn as a NC winner.

I expect it to be a relatively low scoring game 20-30 points per team and about 3-7 points will win the game. Florida will try and use the same game plan that Tennesee and Auburn used. Try to stuff the running game and force McElroy to beat ‘em. I don’t think Florida will be as successful because I am sure Nick has an answer. (at least i hope) Ingram has taken a beating all season maybe trent can pick up the slack. Julio should have some success against the monsterous DB’s of Florida however it will be limited. I expect Alabama to attack more with the wildcat and with maze and peek.

On the flipside Alabama will have to stop the triple option threat of Tebow, not any easy task. The defense will need to play the best game they have played all year. Tebow will have to play his best game also if he expects Bama not be all over him. He will be under pressure all day as will McElroy.

Bama has a slight edge everywhere except for special teams. Maybe Bama saved the emotion they didn’t show against Auburn for Florida. Whoever wins this game WILL win the title.

You forgot the Vols (the 1st BCS champ) in 1998. Alabama is the most physical team UF has faced this year. If Bama can get the ball to Jones early and often, this will open up the Bama running game and lookout! However, with Dunlap missing, I think Bama will get their running game going anyway. Bama has just as good of a defense as UF and are more balanced offensively. Tebow is outstanding and is as fearless and competitive as any college football player to play the game. However, he cannot do it against a great defense by himself. Even the almighty Herschel could be stopped. UF just doesn’t have the big play potential that they had last year. Trust me…Tebow is going to get pounded. Bama 20 UF 10

Interesting that there aren’t any comments about the suspension of Dunlap for the entire game and potentially beyond. Couldn’t get enough of the ‘Meyer is a joke, will only suspend him for half of practice’ comments, and now silence. Further proof that to many people, he’ll never win or do enough. What do you think would have happened on this blog if the suspension didn’t come down? Anyone notice the suspension was given before Meyer even talked to Dunlap or his family? Just my 2 cents.

As far as the game, the loss of Dunlap really hurts. Of course you have to wonder about his commitment if he’s out getting plastered the night before the most important practice of the season (Tuesdays are normally the toughest practice of the week). The Gator D will definitely have to respond to this distraction. Makes me even more nervous about this game given Bama’s focus, motivation, and lack of this type of stuff. They will be more than ready to play when they show up to the Dome. What about the Gators?

Not sure that I agree w/ the tougher schedule comments from above. Seems like both teams have performed in a similar fashion in my view.

Should be a great, close competitive game where one or 2 big turnovers, special teams plays, or untimely penalties will decide the game. Great match up on Saturday. Omitted from the 10 fun facts – Florida has made only 19 of 27 field goals this year, a 70% rate. Alabama has the edge here (27/32, 84%) which, in a low scoring game, could be the differenct. I was at the first SEC Championship Game which matched these two teams and believe that this one will go as 4 of the 6 matchups before between these two have gone – UF 24, UA 10. I noticed yesterday that you were referencing all the great Michigan and Nebraska teams of the 80s. Both teams were okay to good in the 80s but the 90s were when they were national powers with both splitting the 97 title and Nebraska winning in 95 and 96 also.

Don’t be angry about the Iron Bowl and calling us obnoxious. Auburn played well and while some of us are obnoxious you can say that about a minority of fans from every school. You can even say it about all the majority of Auburn fans who used to walk around with the classless gesture of showing fingers of how many in a row they had won during their 6 game streak. I think both schools should be ashamed of their schedule this year. Which is one reason the past 4 months have been the most boring to watch that I can ever think of. I think VSU would have won 8 or 9 games with those pathetic out of conference foes. But the same can be said for Texas as well. My point is this, the blue print has been designed to help get to the big money game- schedule the biggest cupcakes you can then hope M. Slive will give you a generous SEC schedule. Which he did this season to both of these schools. Unfortunately, everyone else in the SEC is following this blue print, including my Dawgs.

Florida will beat the Sugar out of Bama, and send them back to N’awlins for another beatdown by an at-large BC team. Meanwhile, Florida will get spanked by Texas if they don’t get upset by Bama – they are just not as tough as last season, so a hungry team with talent may send Tebow to the NFL bank laughing and crying at the same time.

Hookemhorns,

You’ve been on here several times posting and every single post is an anti bama post. Give it up. You’re really just an Auburn fan posing as a Longhorn fan. Horn fans have nothing against Bama. I know because I have 2 friends that graduated from UTwest.

And your point about Bama having 2 close games is absurd. Show me one team that didn’t have 2 close games. Florida had 3. So what. They won and that’s all that matters. Of our other 10 wins every one of them was by 2 scores or more. Its really sad when you can’t needle us about any losses this season and you are reduced to having to bitch about 2 of our games being close. What are going to bitch about next? Are you going to complain that we’re not that good cause we’re not scoring in the 70s.

For all the mutts whining about the fact that Tony hasn’t acknowledged that he predicted your game against the bugs incorrectly, maybe you should consider the fact that it was a completely irrelevant game to everyone other than the two teams involved. We’re all very impressed that you were able to hold off the mighty Jackets, even if you did need a horrible dropped pass on 4th down to ensure the win after you blew another big lead. Face it, Mutts — nobody cares about your team but you. The top two teams in the country are playing each other in 4 days, and you’re really arrogant enough to think Tony should be talking about a 7-4 team whose signature win came against an overrated GT team by 6 points? Get over yourselves.

AUgirl,

I never did understand the Bo mystique. He never won the national title. Really never even came that close even in the 80s. The best record he had was 10-1-1 and 11-2. He never had an undefeated season or a season with only 1 loss or 1 tie. Most of his seasons were 2-3 loss seasons. Very overrated. Nebraska had great seasons in 82 and 83 but the rest of the decade was 2-3 losses every year in a weak conference. I also know that Nebraska had lost 8 bowl games in a row and I believe it was in the 80s when Osbourn had this notorious streak. Same with Bo. I believe Bo had lost something like 6 bowls in a row during this same period. Could be wrong but I’m pretty sure Bo had a problem winning big bowl games.

To say Florida had no near misses and to ignore the Ark game shows your foolishness. Florida trailed 20-13 late and rallied with a td and a game winning field goal in the waning moments.

Also the Carolina game was tough and the int return was pretty much a 14 pt swing in that game, and the Miss state and LSU games were no blowouts either. Not to demean Florida but I think of their 8 sec games they won 5 by 10 pts or less and the Ark game was tight down to the wire.

Nebraska won two NC’s in the 70’s (1970 and 1971) and two more in 1994 and 1995, but wasn’t overpowering in the 1980’s (although they did lose the 1983 NC game to Miami when Osborne went for two) Osborne’s record at Neb is clearly better than Bo’s. Old School Gator,

Bama has also won 3 of the last 5 against the gators including a 31-3 blowout in 05 and a second blowout 34-7 in 99 when we also took you down earlier in the season in the swamp. There is a 1 pt differential the 24-23 Florida win in 95 or 96 that has the series at 2-4 in favor of Florida as opposed to 3-3.

Overall Alabama leads the head to head 21-14. To me that pretty much “says it all”. Football didn’t start in the 1990s. It was played long before that but to hear from johnny come latelys like you football didn’t begin until Florida finally was a relevant program after 100 years of mediocrity.

Florida has been a dominant program for about 16 years after 100 years of mediocrity. Don’t get too full of yourself just because of a great recent run of success.

Nope, the answer is 71 years!!!! That is pre WWII. And that includes the beat downs we took during the war that you fielded a varsity team while our team was busy fighting for our country.

Does 70 years a better than .500 win % against UGA mean that we just got good?

Foster’s recent visit to Athens to consult with UGA coaching staff on how to defend the GT Offense was part of his “interview process.”

Smart move really. Foster knows it’s “over” at VT.

With U of Richmond HC Mike London set to be annoucned as UVA’s new HC, UVA will now have a complete lock on in-state recruiting in Virginia.

I have seen Colt and some other good quarterbacks slide when they could have gotten first downs. Newsflash, Tebow aint sliding and he will pick up first downs. That is an example of the intangibles that Tebow brings to the field that many other don’t. He is the difference and is most deserving of a second Heisman trophy.. They will give it to McCoy this year. In addition to being undefeated like Ingram and Tebow, the voters feel sorry for what happened last year. And his numbers are much better than Tim’s (albeit against much more inferior competition). In fact, if sentiment didn’t play a role in voting, Tebow wouldn’t even be going to New York. His numbers, this year, are pedestrian.

Statistics have nothing to do with leadership, effort, a will to win, motivating your teammates, etc. etc. etc. You add that to stats and none of Bama’s players compare to Tebow. PERIOD. And that, my friend, will be the difference maker if the game is close at the end…as it did last year. Tebow is a pure, natural born leader. And he is a winner. Ingram and your QB can’t carry Tebow’s J-strap when it comes to the intangibles. And the intengibles are what usually win or lose close games…and coaching. In this case, the coaching is about even I would think. Both coaches are brilliant and are leaders that their players highly respect and will go to war with. Tebow will thank you. We don’t need no homos down in the swawmp! Is that why you hide in Atlanta? With the rest of the homos?

Maybe we should send Atlanta Gator to Tuscalooser with the rest of the homos! Actually, I don’t think he’s a Gator alumnus at all. I think he’s a Bammer posing as a Gator just so he can try and offset the Bammer bashing that’s been going all day.

Jest checking back in. Lotta hate going on tonight. Atlanta Gator, thanks for the site. Ivan Maisel is one of my favorite columnists so I’ll read it in a minute. No need to apologize for screaming pigskin. We all got our share of crazies and just about this time you got folks like him and some Bama fans too that just come out of the woodwork ready to spew some trash talk.

I’m a little surprised to hear Tampagator get down so hard on my qb McElroy and Ingram. He is right though on one count. McElroy isn’t anywhere near Tebow’s league as far as leadership and the intangibles that make Tebow who he is and enabled him to lead the gators to great heights.

But I do take issue with his statement that Ingram couldn’t hold Tebow’s jock strap. McElroy can’t. Ingram is a whole different story. Ingram will certainly be a sure fire pro running back and a good one.

Tebow will be a 3rd to 5th round NFL draft pick at best according to all the NFL scouts. And if he does manage to make it to the pro game as a qb he’ll find that he aint gonna be running real far against the speed of the pro game. And he’ll also find that half the throws he makes in college aren’t going to suffice with the speed of the pro game. No offense to Tebow but he simply can’t make the deep out throw that separates a college and pro qb. And last of all he’ll find that its a whole different game when the talent around him is roughly the same as the talent on the opposing team instead of the talent around him being vastly superior to the opponent’s talent. Its easy to be a great leader and have confidence when you know that the talent around you is better than everyone else.

Tampa gator, in their future careers it is Tebow who will not be able to hold Ingram’s jockstrap.

Rambeaux tigers,

Saban is a turncoat. What did the man do? He simply took a promotion to the pro ranks and found out after a couple years that he belongs back in the college game. The bama job came open and he took its. So what? Why on earth do you LSU fans have a problem with that? Florida fans didn’t get upset with Spurrier when he went to the pros, didn’t like it, and came back to a division rival in South Carolina.

Saban brought back to life an LSU program that had 8 losing seasons in 11 years before he got there and took LSU to heights it hadn’t seen since 1958. And all you got for him is hate just cause he came back to college and the Bama job happened to be open? What did the man ever do to LSU? He left the program stocked with talent for Miles when he went to the pros. What is your problem with the man?

Atlanta Gator is the most respected regular poster on this blog. Just because he’s not joining in on all the juvenile insults by a handful of gator fans doesn’t make him a Bammer. He just talks football as do I and many of the other regular posters. We can disagree on things such as who will win the bama-uf game in a respectful manner. No one wants to be a jackass like you who just tosses around insults because you think its fun. Grow up dude, act like an adult, and quit being a jerk.

What I don’t understand is, if Tony Barnhart was fired by the AJ-C and Tony Barnhart got mad at the AJ-C for telling everyone that he was gone from the AJ-C, and if Tony Barnhart is really just a boy from North Carolina who didn’t even play basketball, is how he named himself Mr. Football and is still here telling us how Georgia Tech was going to totally destroy UGA, who Tony Barnhart said couldn’t play tough football with Georgia Tech with their 6 games against teams not even in a bowl game.

“With a week off to prepare, and a well rested Yellow Jacket squad, this should be a very good game as the triple option gets going in this one. Tech covers in this game against UGA. Paul Johnson rules in rivalry games! “

“THWG! GT romps! 50+ on the pups.”

BuLLdawg –Forget stats that you worship to make your arguments. Ignore you and your ilk. Win and let things take care of themselves. Go Jackets! POUND THE HOUNDS!! THWG!!”

“bulldawg, Paul Johnson is making the lunatic fringe of UGA fandom literally go insane.”

“I work in athens I wear my Georgia Tech hats and shirts proudly and the lil bulldawgs never say a word but I love the way they look at me with hatred when I could careless about them. They are just another win on the season to me.”
.
.

Ramble On:
“My guess is that your punter, Butler will break all the UGA punting records tonight. I say he punts about 20 times for a total of 1000 yards. Now, that my UGAG friends is an accomplishment. THWG!”

.
.

Perrine
“TO HELL WITH GEORGIA!”
“Tech will cruise to a huge victory today over UGA”

.

“Ga Tech will win the game as well as the knock down drag out fight afterwards”

DCJacket
“Hey buLLdawg!! As you can see, we are all sooo upset and rattled by your fiction. Come back tomorrow and tell us all the other ways UGAy is superior to Tech, except in what this whole thread is about. UGA 17 GT 38”

.

. William Casey
“I hope that the Jackets beat the hell out of the Bulldogs. However, I’ll be happy if we win by 1.”

.
.

CPJ
“I just can’t stand the Bulldogs. I wish we would break the old scoring record that we put up against Cumberland.”

.
.
Tony Barnhart

“Georgia at Georgia Tech: Georgia Tech is brimming with confidence as it goes for its second straight win over the Bulldogs. Georgia, meanwhile, there is no evidence that the Bulldogs can handle a tough, physical football game for four quarters. That is exactly what Georgia Tech will give them. Georgia Tech 38, Georgia 21.”

Is there any evidence now ?
