Ten fun facts about the SEC Championship Game

Ten fun facts that you may or may not know about Saturday’s SEC championship game:

1. This will be the 41st time that the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the Associated Press poll have met. Of the previous 40 meetings, 23 have come in the regular season and 17 have been in bowl games. Of those games, the No. 1 team has a record of 24-14-2.

2. Since Florida quarterback Tim Tebow made “The Promise” after last season’s loss to Ole Miss, Florida has won 22 straight games. In those 22 games Florida has outscored its opponents 907-259.

3. Alabama doesn’t appear to have many weaknesses but here is one. Or at least it is a concern. The Crimson Tide is ranked 116th nationally in defending kickoff returns. Teams are averaging 25.56 yards per kickoff return against Alabama.  Alabama, interestingly enough, has kicked off 82 times (68 have been returned) this season. Only four teams in the country have kicked off more: Boise State (99), Houston (95), TCU (90), and Florida (86).

4. Alabama’s Javier Arenas is one of the best punt returners in the country, averaging 16.64 yards per attempt. But chances are Arenas will not  return the ball much against Florida. The Gators only have allowed only four punts to be returned against them all season for a grand total of 13 yards. No other team in the country has allowed five or less punts to be returned against them this season.

5. This will be the 18th SEC championship game. Seven times in the past 17 years the winner of this game has gone on to win the national championship: 1992, 1996, 1998, 2003, 2006, 2007 and 2008. Two other times (1995, 1997) the winner has played in a game for at least a share of the national championship.

6. Alabama running back Mark Ingram suffered a hip-pointer last Friday against Auburn and was held to a season-low 30 yards rushing. Ingram, however, needs just 43 yards against Florida to set the school record for rushing yards in a season. Bobby Humphrey ran for 1,471 yards on 236 attempts in 1986. Ingram, a sophomore, has 1,429 yards on 221 attempts.

7. Only one running back this season—Dennis Johnson of Arkansas—has rushed for over 100 yards against the Florida defense. Florida is No. 8 nationally in rushing defense, giving up only 89.2 yards per game and 2.9 yards per rush. Florida has held four straight opponents to under 100 yards rushing. Alabama is No. 2 nationally in rushing defense, allowing only 77.08 yards per game and 2.62 yards per attempt. No running back has gone over 100 yards against Alabama’s defense this season. LSU’s Charles Scott (83) and Mississippi State’s Anthony Dixon (81) were the only two backs to run for more than 80 yards against Alabama.

8. Think it will be a low scoring game? Of course. Florida leads the nation in scoring defense, giving up 9.83 points per game. Alabama is No. 2 scoring defense, allowing 10.83 points per game. Florida has allowed only 11 touchdowns this season, four fewer than any other team in the nation. Alabama, Nebraska, and Penn State are tied for second place, allowing only 15 touchdowns.

9. Both of these teams are very good when it comes to stopping third down conversions. Florida is No. 2 nationally in third down defense. Opponents have converted only 43 of 164 third downs (26.22 percent). Opponents have converted only 48 of 166 third downs against Alabama (28.92 percent), which is No. 5 in the nation. In case you’re wondering, TCU leads the nation in third down defense. Opponents have completed only 46 of 176 third downs (26.14 percent) against the Horned Frogs.

10. Florida has nine appearances in the SEC championship game, more than any other school. Alabama has six appearances in the SEC championship game, all of them against Florida. Alabama is 2-4 in those games, winning in 1992 and 1999. The other schools who have appearances in this game are Tennessee (5), LSU (4), Georgia (3), Arkansas (3), Auburn (3) and Mississippi State (1). Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, South Carolina, and Kentucky have never appeared in the SEC championship game.

Got 12, I totally agree on the heisman. Sentiment is what cost Peyton Manning to not win it.

Also, Tebow’s numbers are VERY pedestrian. He has looked so-so all year IMHO.

Gatorzone,

I can’t say I didn’t enjoy seeing the look on Peyton’s face when Woodson was announced as the winner but Peyton got shafted.

Look on the bright side, if the Heisman actually went to the most outstanding player for that year, it would probably go to some no-name player from a no-name team. What fun would that be?

Got 12? My sentiment is that McCoy doesn’t play at the same level of competition m and Tebow has greater role in his offense he runs and passes…and if sentiment is used to give to Colt “because of what happened last year ” Couldn’t sentiment be used to vote for the guy who leads his team to at least 2 NC’s ? Oh yeah and holds the record for TD’s scored in a year too? I think its a very close race but let Tebow and the Gators win the SEC and I think he is a lock.

I love these folks comaparing Tebow’s statistics to Bama player’s stats. Statistics have nothing to do with leadership, effort, a will to win, motivating your teammates, etc. etc. etc. You add that to stats and none of Bama’s players compare to Tebow. PERIOD. And that, my friend, will be the difference maker if the game is close at the end…as it did last year. Tebow is a pure, natural born leader. And he is a winner. Ingram and your QB can’t carry Tebow’s J-strap when it comes to the intangibles. And the intengibles are what usually win or lose close games…and coaching. In this case, the coaching is about even I would think. Both coaches are brilliant and are leaders that their players highly respect and will go to war with. It is going to be one hell of a game on Saturday.

Difficult to place UA at the top with margin of win against Tennessee and got the call against LSU that may have saved them. Review of current top 25 ranked teams they have played no top 10 and only two in the 11-25 rank. Just off year for SEC other than UA and UF. SEC pposition has been week and their out of conference extremely week. So how do you figure …..

I’m a strong Alabama fan — R_O_L_L___T_I_D_E_!_!_! — and I hope we beat Florida. But if we don’t, I’ll definitely pull for Florida in the BCS, because we are, after all, the SouthEastern Conference!!!

Jest checking back in. Lotta hate going on tonight. Atlanta Gator, thanks for the site. Ivan Maisel is one of my favorite columnists so I’ll read it in a minute. No need to apologize for screaming pigskin. We all got our share of crazies and just about this time you got folks like him and some Bama fans too that just come out of the woodwork ready to spew some trash talk.

I’m a little surprised to hear Tampagator get down so hard on my qb McElroy and Ingram. He is right though on one count. McElroy isn’t anywhere near Tebow’s league as far as leadership and the intangibles that make Tebow who he is and enabled him to lead the gators to great heights.

But I do take issue with his statement that Ingram couldn’t hold Tebow’s jock strap. McElroy can’t. Ingram is a whole different story. Ingram will certainly be a sure fire pro running back and a good one.

Tebow will be a 3rd to 5th round NFL draft pick at best according to all the NFL scouts. And if he does manage to make it to the pro game as a qb he’ll find that he aint gonna be running real far against the speed of the pro game. And he’ll also find that half the throws he makes in college aren’t going to suffice with the speed of the pro game. No offense to Tebow but he simply can’t make the deep out throw that separates a college and pro qb. And last of all he’ll find that its a whole different game when the talent around him is roughly the same as the talent on the opposing team instead of the talent around him being vastly superior to the opponent’s talent. Its easy to be a great leader and have confidence when you know that the talent around you is better than everyone else.

Tampa gator, in their future careers it is Tebow who will not be able to hold Ingram’s jockstrap.

Rambeaux tigers,

Saban is a turncoat. What did the man do? He simply took a promotion to the pro ranks and found out after a couple years that he belongs back in the college game. The bama job came open and he took its. So what? Why on earth do you LSU fans have a problem with that? Florida fans didn’t get upset with Spurrier when he went to the pros, didn’t like it, and came back to a division rival in South Carolina.

Saban brought back to life an LSU program that had 8 losing seasons in 11 years before he got there and took LSU to heights it hadn’t seen since 1958. And all you got for him is hate just cause he came back to college and the Bama job happened to be open? What did the man ever do to LSU? He left the program stocked with talent for Miles when he went to the pros. What is your problem with the man?

Atlanta Gator is the most respected regular poster on this blog. Just because he’s not joining in on all the juvenile insults by a handful of gator fans doesn’t make him a Bammer. He just talks football as do I and many of the other regular posters. We can disagree on things such as who will win the bama-uf game in a respectful manner. No one wants to be a jackass like you who just tosses around insults because you think its fun. Grow up dude, act like an adult, and quit being a jerk.

What I don’t understand is, if Tony Barnhart was fired by the AJ-C and Tony Barnhart got mad at the AJ-C for telling everyone that he was gone from the AJ-C, and if Tony Barnhart is really just a boy from North Carolina who didn’t even play basketball, is how he named himself Mr. Football and is still here telling us how Georgia Tech was going to totally destroy UGA, who Tony Barnhart said couldn’t play tough football with Georgia Tech with their 6 games against teams not even in a bowl game.
