Ten fun facts about the SEC Championship Game

Ten fun facts that you may or may not know about Saturday’s SEC championship game:

1. This will be the 41st time that the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the Associated Press poll have met. Of the previous 40 meetings, 23 have come in the regular season and 17 have been in bowl games. Of those games, the No. 1 team has a record of 24-14-2.

2. Since Florida quarterback Tim Tebow made “The Promise” after last season’s loss to Ole Miss, Florida has won 22 straight games. In those 22 games Florida has outscored its opponents 907-259.

3. Alabama doesn’t appear to have many weaknesses but here is one. Or at least it is a concern. The Crimson Tide is ranked 116th nationally in defending kickoff returns. Teams are averaging 25.56 yards per kickoff return against Alabama.  Alabama, interestingly enough, has kicked off 82 times (68 have been returned) this season. Only four teams in the country have kicked off more: Boise State (99), Houston (95), TCU (90), and Florida (86).

4. Alabama’s Javier Arenas is one of the best punt returners in the country, averaging 16.64 yards per attempt. But chances are Arenas will not  return the ball much against Florida. The Gators only have allowed only four punts to be returned against them all season for a grand total of 13 yards. No other team in the country has allowed five or less punts to be returned against them this season.

5. This will be the 18th SEC championship game. Seven times in the past 17 years the winner of this game has gone on to win the national championship: 1992, 1996, 1998, 2003, 2006, 2007 and 2008. Two other times (1995, 1997) the winner has played in a game for at least a share of the national championship.

6. Alabama running back Mark Ingram suffered a hip-pointer last Friday against Auburn and was held to a season-low 30 yards rushing. Ingram, however, needs just 43 yards against Florida to set the school record for rushing yards in a season. Bobby Humphrey ran for 1,471 yards on 236 attempts in 1986. Ingram, a sophomore, has 1,429 yards on 221 attempts.

7. Only one running back this season—Dennis Johnson of Arkansas—has rushed for over 100 yards against the Florida defense. Florida is No. 8 nationally in rushing defense, giving up only 89.2 yards per game and 2.9 yards per rush. Florida has held four straight opponents to under 100 yards rushing. Alabama is No. 2 nationally in rushing defense, allowing only 77.08 yards per game and 2.62 yards per attempt. No running back has gone over 100 yards against Alabama’s defense this season. LSU’s Charles Scott (83) and Mississippi State’s Anthony Dixon (81) were the only two backs to run for more than 80 yards against Alabama.

8. Think it will be a low scoring game? Of course. Florida leads the nation in scoring defense, giving up 9.83 points per game. Alabama is No. 2 scoring defense, allowing 10.83 points per game. Florida has allowed only 11 touchdowns this season, four fewer than any other team in the nation. Alabama, Nebraska, and Penn State are tied for second place, allowing only 15 touchdowns.

9. Both of these teams are very good when it comes to stopping third down conversions. Florida is No. 2 nationally in third down defense. Opponents have converted only 43 of 164 third downs (26.22 percent). Opponents have converted only 48 of 166 third downs against Alabama (28.92 percent), which is No. 5 in the nation. In case you’re wondering, TCU leads the nation in third down defense. Opponents have completed only 46 of 176 third downs (26.14 percent) against the Horned Frogs.

10. Florida has nine appearances in the SEC championship game, more than any other school. Alabama has six appearances in the SEC championship game, all of them against Florida. Alabama is 2-4 in those games, winning in 1992 and 1999. The other schools who have appearances in this game are Tennessee (5), LSU (4), Georgia (3), Arkansas (3), Auburn (3) and Mississippi State (1). Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, South Carolina, and Kentucky have never appeared in the SEC championship game.

It is going to be fun when the Tide beats Florida. By the way Auburn had 2 weeks to prepare for their most hated rival, Bama had less than a week to prepare because of thanksgiving.Auburn schemed well and still lost.

Screaming Pigskin,

Bama won, No excuses needed however. Don’t think certian factors can’t effect a game. For example let’s say most all of the teams your team plays against have a bye week the week before they play you.It very well could impact the games.

ALA 45 – CHATT 0 and probably had your third string in there. Come on. You wusses got outplayed most of that Auburn game. Look what they did to your Heisman hopeful which by the way – ALABAMA has never brought home the Heisman. Florida has how many? Count. You just can’t admit defeat. One excuse after another. And when we take it to you this Saturday, you’ll still be full of them. We’re already prepared. You just can’t stand it that maybe you aren’t as good as you think yall are.

People don’t realize it but I think Bama had a better team last year with John Parker Wilson as a senior @ QB. McElroy isn’t gonna beat us with his arm. This kid sucks bad… he needs to go back to Texas where he is from. I have watched every Bama game closely this year and he is the weakest link on your entire team. Ingram isn’t 100% with that hip pointer and even if he was we get it done without Dunlap 34-14… Go Gators!!!

Screaming Pigskin,

You are acting like Bama lost yet they won.Alabama is undefeated too and Alabama beat certian teams Florida played also by more points than Florida.Sure I know the stats go out the window on saturday but stats can say Bama will win.And how can you not be good and yet be undefeated? Both Alabama and Florida are good.I don’t believe in excuses in my book you either win or lose however there seems to be this mentality among some fans who seem to think certian things can’t effect a game.Like for example let’s say you have players injured,or alot of the teams you will face have a bye week before they play you, or a team has an easier schedule. These types of things can impact games and they ae not excuses.

The rumor seems to be gathering momentum that UGA will
replace Willie Martinez with VT DC Bud Foster.

Foster’s recent visit to Athens to consult with UGA coaching staff on how to defend the GT Offense was part of his “interview process.”

Smart move really. Foster knows it’s “over” at VT.

With U of Richmond HC Mike London set to be annoucned as UVA’s new HC, UVA will now have a complete lock on in-state recruiting in Virginia.

Foster’s getting out while the gettin’s good.

VT without Foster is a straight downhill slide for VT and Frank Beamer.

Bama will look even worse this year against us. Both teams have talent but Tebow is the difference… This kid is the truth. I have seen Colt and some other good quarterbacks slide when they could have gotten first downs. Newsflash, Tebow aint sliding and he will pick up first downs. That is an example of the intangibles that Tebow brings to the field that many other don’t. He is the difference and is most deserving of a second Heisman trophy.. Before you make the case about Colt McCoy being deserving, Jordan Shipley is just as deserving and I think will acatually work against each other in the voting…. Go Gators…

I just love Georgia fans. All they have done all year is complain about people talking other team crap on blog stories about their team, players, and recruits…then, a blog/story about the SEC championship game and tons of Georgia fans come on ranting about Tech/Georgia, a game that has no signifiance for anything and certainly nothing to do with the SEC title game (which Georgia has have very little knowledge of or experience with). What are bunch of hyprocrites!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tim Tebow: 2166

Attempt/completions
Greg McElroy:ATT 296 COMP 180 PCT 60.8
Tim Tebow: ATT 244 COMP 162 PCT 66.4

Greg McElroy: YARDS/A 7.5 LONG 80 TD 16 INT 4 SACK 12 RAT 138.7
Tim Tebow: YARDS/A 8.9 LONG 77 TD 17 INT 4 SACK 25 RAT 160.7

If you don’t think stats lie, you are wrong. Florida has better numbers than Bama because they play lesser opponents. If you factor in the strength of schedule, I’d think Bama has better stats than Florida.

Numbers aside, Florida does have Tebow, Bama does have return coverage problem. I’d say Forida is better positioned to win.

Really you want to compare stats with your QB vs Tebow…and its close..dude don’t you sort of have to mention Tebow’s rushing stats and how for 3 seasons he has carried the Gators on his back to 2 NC’s face it he is nearly equal to your guy as a pure passer and he is in the end not a QB just the best passing fullback in college football history..And Spike you maybe right..I hate the Gators but I’m torn on who to root for this weekend as I admire Tebow as much as I hate Saban..

Hows this for an excuse “All of you who hope the Tide loses this saturday.Don’t forget Bama was leading in the game last year up until about 10 minutes or so to go in the game.Don’t think the Tide can’t beat Florida because a few different plays here and there last year and the Gators could’ve/would’ve lost last year” We were ahead and then you took it from us. Not fair! The only difference between this and a school yard game of football is the Gators will take YOUR ball and go on to the the BCS. Last year we were 11 – 1 and you all were 12 – 0.

So since you seem to have such knowledge, What happened?

Actually, the defense has led UF to it’s last two NC’s. Tebow had incredible stats in 2007–the year he won the Heisman–but the Gators lost 4 or 5 games including their bowl game.

how2fish,

They will give it to McCoy this year. In addition to being undefeated like Ingram and Tebow, the voters feel sorry for what happened last year. And his numbers are much better than Tim’s (albeit against much more inferior competition). In fact, if sentiment didn’t play a role in voting, Tebow wouldn’t even be going to New York. His numbers, this year, are pedestrian.
