Ten fun facts about the SEC Championship Game

Ten fun facts that you may or may not know about Saturday’s SEC championship game:

1. This will be the 41st time that the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the Associated Press poll have met. Of the previous 40 meetings, 23 have come in the regular season and 17 have been in bowl games. Of those games, the No. 1 team has a record of 24-14-2.

2. Since Florida quarterback Tim Tebow made “The Promise” after last season’s loss to Ole Miss, Florida has won 22 straight games. In those 22 games Florida has outscored its opponents 907-259.

3. Alabama doesn’t appear to have many weaknesses but here is one. Or at least it is a concern. The Crimson Tide is ranked 116th nationally in defending kickoff returns. Teams are averaging 25.56 yards per kickoff return against Alabama.  Alabama, interestingly enough, has kicked off 82 times (68 have been returned) this season. Only four teams in the country have kicked off more: Boise State (99), Houston (95), TCU (90), and Florida (86).

4. Alabama’s Javier Arenas is one of the best punt returners in the country, averaging 16.64 yards per attempt. But chances are Arenas will not  return the ball much against Florida. The Gators only have allowed only four punts to be returned against them all season for a grand total of 13 yards. No other team in the country has allowed five or less punts to be returned against them this season.

5. This will be the 18th SEC championship game. Seven times in the past 17 years the winner of this game has gone on to win the national championship: 1992, 1996, 1998, 2003, 2006, 2007 and 2008. Two other times (1995, 1997) the winner has played in a game for at least a share of the national championship.

6. Alabama running back Mark Ingram suffered a hip-pointer last Friday against Auburn and was held to a season-low 30 yards rushing. Ingram, however, needs just 43 yards against Florida to set the school record for rushing yards in a season. Bobby Humphrey ran for 1,471 yards on 236 attempts in 1986. Ingram, a sophomore, has 1,429 yards on 221 attempts.

7. Only one running back this season—Dennis Johnson of Arkansas—has rushed for over 100 yards against the Florida defense. Florida is No. 8 nationally in rushing defense, giving up only 89.2 yards per game and 2.9 yards per rush. Florida has held four straight opponents to under 100 yards rushing. Alabama is No. 2 nationally in rushing defense, allowing only 77.08 yards per game and 2.62 yards per attempt. No running back has gone over 100 yards against Alabama’s defense this season. LSU’s Charles Scott (83) and Mississippi State’s Anthony Dixon (81) were the only two backs to run for more than 80 yards against Alabama.

8. Think it will be a low scoring game? Of course. Florida leads the nation in scoring defense, giving up 9.83 points per game. Alabama is No. 2 scoring defense, allowing 10.83 points per game. Florida has allowed only 11 touchdowns this season, four fewer than any other team in the nation. Alabama, Nebraska, and Penn State are tied for second place, allowing only 15 touchdowns.

9. Both of these teams are very good when it comes to stopping third down conversions. Florida is No. 2 nationally in third down defense. Opponents have converted only 43 of 164 third downs (26.22 percent). Opponents have converted only 48 of 166 third downs against Alabama (28.92 percent), which is No. 5 in the nation. In case you’re wondering, TCU leads the nation in third down defense. Opponents have completed only 46 of 176 third downs (26.14 percent) against the Horned Frogs.

10. Florida has nine appearances in the SEC championship game, more than any other school. Alabama has six appearances in the SEC championship game, all of them against Florida. Alabama is 2-4 in those games, winning in 1992 and 1999. The other schools who have appearances in this game are Tennessee (5), LSU (4), Georgia (3), Arkansas (3), Auburn (3) and Mississippi State (1). Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, South Carolina, and Kentucky have never appeared in the SEC championship game.

I know exactly who Osborne is…just couldn’t remember if he was around in the 80’s. My bad. I also remember Colorado giving it to Nebraska and ruining their perfect season.

Dude, we are the dominant team and the fact that Alabama homers are at #2 when they almost lost to Tennessee and Auburn this year shows they’re over-rated! Fact. We could blow you outta the water. Florida has no near-misses like you rednecks so at least they deserve where they are.

For all the mutts whining about the fact that Tony hasn’t acknowledged that he predicted your game against the bugs incorrectly, maybe you should consider the fact that it was a completely irrelevant game to everyone other than the two teams involved. We’re all very impressed that you were able to hold off the mighty Jackets, even if you did need a horrible dropped pass on 4th down to ensure the win after you blew another big lead. Face it, Mutts — nobody cares about your team but you. The top two teams in the country are playing each other in 4 days, and you’re really arrogant enough to think Tony should be talking about a 7-4 team whose signature win came against an overrated GT team by 6 points? Get over yourselves.

AUgirl,

I never did understand the Bo mystique. He never won the national title. Really never even came that close even in the 80s. The best record he had was 10-1-1 and 11-2. He never had an undefeated season or a season with only 1 loss or 1 tie. Most of his seasons were 2-3 loss seasons. Very overrated. Nebraska had great seasons in 82 and 83 but the rest of the decade was 2-3 losses every year in a weak conference. I also know that Nebraska had lost 8 bowl games in a row and I believe it was in the 80s when Osbourn had this notorious streak. Same with Bo. I believe Bo had lost something like 6 bowls in a row during this same period. Could be wrong but I’m pretty sure Bo had a problem winning big bowl games.

Vol fans aren’t that bad, its the arrogant coach. Kiffin is a jerk! Must be that California sun.

Paul Johnson is a fruitcake! Go back to Georgia Southern with your junior college offense! It doesn’t work with the big boys. 2-1 vs the SEC? Mississippi State and Vandy are at the bottom of the SEC!!!! more notably you got BEAT by an average SEC team saturday night. Maybe it will shut the Tech nerds up! So go back to playing your computer games NERDS!!!!!

Texas against an SEC defense…..please! TEXAS would run all over the SEC!

Hook em horns or should I really just call you the Auburn fan that you really are,

Now you are really showing your ignorance. Florida had a tough tight game with Ark 23-20 that went down to the wire and was highly controversial. To say Florida had no near misses and to ignore the Ark game shows your foolishness. Florida trailed 20-13 late and rallied with a td and a game winning field goal in the waning moments.

Also the Carolina game was tough and the int return was pretty much a 14 pt swing in that game, and the Miss state and LSU games were no blowouts either. Not to demean Florida but I think of their 8 sec games they won 5 by 10 pts or less and the Ark game was tight down to the wire.

If you’re going to speak then it would help you to know what the hell you are talking about.

ranked in likelihood of going to the dome:

1. Ole Miss (when Auburn, Alabama, Arkansas, LSU are no longer in the SEC WEST)
2. South Carolina (hell freezes over)
3. Kentucky (when pigs fly)
4. Vandy (never)

Some of you people amaze me. You would pull for an out of conference team over one from your own conference? No matter that you may dislike the Dogs, Gators, Vols, etc., why pull against them to make some other conference look stronger than the teams that you play year in and out? I sure as heck do not want the Big Ten, ACC, or the like beating up on teams from the SEC, it devalues our own! We have to see the drivel that the guy “m” writes to TB all season long about how overrated the SEC is, so why give someone like him any “fodder”? Go Dogs, and Go SEC!!

AUgirl,

Sorry but I just don’t see it with Bo. To be a great one you gotta win the big prize in my opinion. He is a good coach but I wouldn’t consider him a great coach. I think the nedia built him up to be bigger and better than his actual record shows him to be. BTW those other coaches you mention all won national titles and 2 of them won numerous national titles. I wouldn’t put Bo in their company.

AU Girl – what is with the Michigan love? Bo never won a NC and in fact Michigan went from 1949 until 1997 when they shared one with Nebraska. Nebraska won two NC’s in the 70’s (1970 and 1971) and two more in 1994 and 1995, but wasn’t overpowering in the 1980’s (although they did lose the 1983 NC game to Miami when Osborne went for two) Osborne’s record at Neb is clearly better than Bo’s. Michigan wasn’t a factor in the 1980’s because everytime Michigan got close they lost to OSU or in the Rose Bowl.

@Rabun – I’m with you. After seeing USC at #1 year after year, it’s refreshing to see ANY one but them in the Top 5!!! But the fact that it’s SEC gives credence to what we already know…SEC is the toughest conference OVERALL. When you compare other conferences, it’s rare to see Team A beat Team B who beats Team C and then Team C beats Team A. Go figure but we do it in the SEC every friggin year and consistently knock one another out of Top 10. I always pull for SEC teams in bowl games. To go against our own conference is, I don’t know, what’s a good word…

After Saturday Alabama will have a whole new record to boast about. Two straight years at 12 – 0 and two straight years where they lost to the Gators for the SEC championship. Go Gators! For all you Dawg fans that say “What are you going to do when Tebow is gone”. That statement sounds so much like “Once Spurrier leaves we will own you”. When that didn’t happen it was “Well next year you will have no football players that were coached by Spurrier”. I could go on and on and on.
