Ten fun facts about the SEC Championship Game

Ten fun facts that you may or may not know about Saturday’s SEC championship game:

1. This will be the 41st time that the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the Associated Press poll have met. Of the previous 40 meetings, 23 have come in the regular season and 17 have been in bowl games. Of those games, the No. 1 team has a record of 24-14-2.

2. Since Florida quarterback Tim Tebow made “The Promise” after last season’s loss to Ole Miss, Florida has won 22 straight games. In those 22 games Florida has outscored its opponents 907-259.

3. Alabama doesn’t appear to have many weaknesses but here is one. Or at least it is a concern. The Crimson Tide is ranked 116th nationally in defending kickoff returns. Teams are averaging 25.56 yards per kickoff return against Alabama.  Alabama, interestingly enough, has kicked off 82 times (68 have been returned) this season. Only four teams in the country have kicked off more: Boise State (99), Houston (95), TCU (90), and Florida (86).

4. Alabama’s Javier Arenas is one of the best punt returners in the country, averaging 16.64 yards per attempt. But chances are Arenas will not  return the ball much against Florida. The Gators only have allowed only four punts to be returned against them all season for a grand total of 13 yards. No other team in the country has allowed five or less punts to be returned against them this season.

5. This will be the 18th SEC championship game. Seven times in the past 17 years the winner of this game has gone on to win the national championship: 1992, 1996, 1998, 2003, 2006, 2007 and 2008. Two other times (1995, 1997) the winner has played in a game for at least a share of the national championship.

6. Alabama running back Mark Ingram suffered a hip-pointer last Friday against Auburn and was held to a season-low 30 yards rushing. Ingram, however, needs just 43 yards against Florida to set the school record for rushing yards in a season. Bobby Humphrey ran for 1,471 yards on 236 attempts in 1986. Ingram, a sophomore, has 1,429 yards on 221 attempts.

7. Only one running back this season—Dennis Johnson of Arkansas—has rushed for over 100 yards against the Florida defense. Florida is No. 8 nationally in rushing defense, giving up only 89.2 yards per game and 2.9 yards per rush. Florida has held four straight opponents to under 100 yards rushing. Alabama is No. 2 nationally in rushing defense, allowing only 77.08 yards per game and 2.62 yards per attempt. No running back has gone over 100 yards against Alabama’s defense this season. LSU’s Charles Scott (83) and Mississippi State’s Anthony Dixon (81) were the only two backs to run for more than 80 yards against Alabama.

8. Think it will be a low scoring game? Of course. Florida leads the nation in scoring defense, giving up 9.83 points per game. Alabama is No. 2 scoring defense, allowing 10.83 points per game. Florida has allowed only 11 touchdowns this season, four fewer than any other team in the nation. Alabama, Nebraska, and Penn State are tied for second place, allowing only 15 touchdowns.

9. Both of these teams are very good when it comes to stopping third down conversions. Florida is No. 2 nationally in third down defense. Opponents have converted only 43 of 164 third downs (26.22 percent). Opponents have converted only 48 of 166 third downs against Alabama (28.92 percent), which is No. 5 in the nation. In case you’re wondering, TCU leads the nation in third down defense. Opponents have completed only 46 of 176 third downs (26.14 percent) against the Horned Frogs.

10. Florida has nine appearances in the SEC championship game, more than any other school. Alabama has six appearances in the SEC championship game, all of them against Florida. Alabama is 2-4 in those games, winning in 1992 and 1999. The other schools who have appearances in this game are Tennessee (5), LSU (4), Georgia (3), Arkansas (3), Auburn (3) and Mississippi State (1). Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, South Carolina, and Kentucky have never appeared in the SEC championship game.

In response to Gen Neyland…..CLK took a jab at Meyer yesterday. He responded to a question regarding the SECCG match up by saying Florida has better athletes but Alabama has better coaches…
He should know…he lost to both of them. WDE!

Bozo and his 14-23 career record has no buisness evaluating coaches.

Didn’t he hire Ed “I’m drunk with my shirt off” Oregron who got fired because he couldn’t win a SEC game.

Interesting that there aren’t any comments about the suspension of Dunlap for the entire game and potentially beyond. Couldn’t get enough of the ‘Meyer is a joke, will only suspend him for half of practice’ comments, and now silence. Further proof that to many people, he’ll never win or do enough. What do you think would have happened on this blog if the suspension didn’t come down? Anyone notice the suspension was given before Meyer even talked to Dunlap or his family? Just my 2 cents.

As far as the game, the loss of Dunlap really hurts. Of course you have to wonder about his commitment if he’s out getting plastered the night before the most important practice of the season (Tuesdays are normally the toughest practice of the week). The Gator D will definitely have to respond to this distraction. Makes me even more nervous about this game given Bama’s focus, motivation, and lack of this type of stuff. They will be more than ready to play when they show up to the Dome. What about the Gators?

Not sure that I agree w/ the tougher schedule comments from above. Seems like both teams have performed in a similar fashion in my view.

Should be a great, close competitive game where one or 2 big turnovers, special teams plays, or untimely penalties will decide the game. I would probably favor Florida by something like 20-16 or 24-20. I hate it for Dunlap that he decided to do something really dumb but hopefully it gives us a substantial advantage. I’ve seen him bat down quite a few balls like a volleyball spiker. He won’t be missed by Bama fans of course.

UF will make McElroy win the game. Can he? We’ll see…I know Tebow can handle the pressure, so it’s UF 27 AL 10 Winner plays Texas for the trophy…
As a GSU Eagle, I could NEVER root for App ST even though they are in our (Southern ) Conference. Just like Gators, Vols, Dawgs and Tigers can’t really pull for each other in bowl games. That’s just not right!

Great match up on Saturday. Omitted from the 10 fun facts – Florida has made only 19 of 27 field goals this year, a 70% rate. Alabama has the edge here (27/32, 84%) which, in a low scoring game, could be the differenct. I was at the first SEC Championship Game which matched these two teams and believe that this one will go as 4 of the 6 matchups before between these two have gone – UF 24, UA 10. Tebow and the Mighty Gators do it again.

AUgirl,

I noticed yesterday that you were referencing all the great Michigan and Nebraska teams of the 80s. Both teams were okay to good in the 80s but the 90s were when they were national powers with both splitting the 97 title and Nebraska winning in 95 and 96 also.

Don’t be angry about the Iron Bowl and calling us obnoxious. Auburn played well and while some of us are obnoxious you can say that about a minority of fans from every school. You can even say it about all the majority of Auburn fans who used to walk around with the classless gesture of showing fingers of how many in a row they had won during their 6 game streak. Seems you may have forgotten about that. We haven’t.

I think both schools should be ashamed of their schedule this year. Which is one reason the past 4 months have been the most boring to watch that I can ever think of. I think VSU would have won 8 or 9 games with those pathetic out of conference foes. But the same can be said for Texas as well. My point is this, the blue print has been designed to help get to the big money game- schedule the biggest cupcakes you can then hope M. Slive will give you a generous SEC schedule. Which he did this season to both of these schools. Unfortunately, everyone else in the SEC is following this blue print, including my Dawgs.

CharlotteGator : I read where Slive put the pressure on Meyer to suspend Dunlap for the entire game vs a 1st quarter or 1st half sitting. Did Meyer try to reason that Dunlap should not be suspended for the full 60 minutes because, A) Nobody was injured and B) No property was destroyed..?

Mr College Football –

You goofed on excluding the Mighty Volunteers National Champions of 1998. Sad that you tarnished your “know-it-all” image all by yourself, dude.

Florida will beat the Sugar out of Bama, and send them back to N’awlins for another beatdown by an at-large BC team. Meanwhile, Florida will get spanked by Texas if they don’t get upset by Bama – they are just not as tough as last season, so a hungry team with talent may send Tebow to the NFL bank laughing and crying at the same time.

As for GT – “OVER-RATED!” you jackets should be ASHAMED to lose on “The Flats” to UGAG.

Hookemhorns,

You’ve been on here several times posting and every single post is an anti bama post. Give it up. You’re really just an Auburn fan posing as a Longhorn fan. Horn fans have nothing against Bama. I know because I have 2 friends that graduated from UTwest.

And your point about Bama having 2 close games is absurd. Show me one team that didn’t have 2 close games. Florida had 3. So what. They won and that’s all that matters. Of our other 10 wins every one of them was by 2 scores or more. Its really sad when you can’t needle us about any losses this season and you are reduced to having to bitch about 2 of our games being close. What are going to bitch about next? Are you going to complain that we’re not that good cause we’re not scoring in the 70s.

Until last weekend, I would have given the better play on offense to Alabama – now I’m not so sure.
And I believe these two are unnervingly close in talent, depth and coaching.
The difference will be special teams, turnovers, possesion and time management.
Good luck to both squads Saturday and . . .
