Don’t look now folks but we COULD have a rematch of the SEC championship game for the BCS national title.
I know I’ve said for weeks that this cannot happen, that the voters in the human polls would not allow a team that loses on championship Saturday to turn right around and play for the national title a month later. But now we are looking at the real numbers and the numbers do not lie.
Florida and Alabama are 1-2 in the latest BCS Standings. They are tied for the No. 1 spot in the computers. Look at the gap in the total rating between No. 2 Alabama (.9513) and No. 4 TCU (.8689) and No. 5 Cincinnati (.8547). Alabama has almost a full one-tenth of a point over TCU and Cincinnati. In this system that is huge! TCU (12-0) is done for the season and Cincinnati (11-0) plays a Pittsburgh team (9-2) that lost last week to West Virginia.
What does this mean? It means that if Texas loses to Nebraska in the Big 12 championship game, the SEC championship game loser, if it is a really tight game, has a real chance to finish No. 2 in the final BCS Standings. That’s because the computers will still love them because their only loss this season was to a team ranked in the top two.
It will all come down to the human voters and how far they drop the SEC championship game loser. If the loser of that game only drops to No. 3 or No. 4 in the human polls, then it can finish No. 2 in the BCS standings because of the computers. So it could be that a 12-0 TCU, a 12-0 Cincinnati and a 13-0 Boise State get squeezed out.
Remember this: The voters in the human polls realized in 2006 that their votes set up the BCS championship matchup. That’s why they moved No. 4 Florida ahead of No. 3 Michigan in their final polls. Michigan had had its shot and lost to No. 1 Ohio State and No. 2 USC had lost.
This also has a chance to be a repeat of 2003 when Southern California finished No. 1 in both human polls and did not get into the BCS championship game. If Texas loses on Saturday, then TCU or Cincinnati could finish No. 2 in the human polls but get left out of the big game in favor of a one-loss team from the SEC.
If Texas takes care of Nebraska on Saturday we will not have this argument. But if Texas loses, look out. If Florida and Alabama have a rematch for the national championship, those who want to blow up the BCS system will have a lot more ammunition that the system unfairly favors the elites of college football.
And boy, will that be a fun argument.

Alabama will take care of business this Saturday afternoon. Texas will more than likely pull it out also, if not we don’t care plenty of time to prepare for whom ever.

I hope to see one of these undefeated teams from these crying conferences play in the NC game. They will get what they deserve. There should not be a rematch in any NC game. If the two teams have already played the winner is the winner, even if the match took place in any week of the season!

It would not be possible for the loser of the SEC Championship game to play for the National Title. The human pollsters made a decision in the 2007 football season that if you don’t win your conference there is no way you can play for the National Title game. This is what happened to Georgia in 2007. Even though we were by far the best team in the country at the end of the year we didn’t get that opportunity. The loser of this game should be completely eliminated from the chance of a rematch, PERIOD! If the loser does get in this game I’ll be raisin’ hell. GO DAWGS!!!!

athendawgs, the behavior from the victory Saturday is more or less based upon the other results, or lack thereof, of this season. Sure we didn’t expect to win the East this year, not with Tebow back. Matter of fact we weren’t sure if we would be .500 or not by a lot of preseason predictions. Of course we expected a better record by shear talent a lone. Unfortunately, we didn’t have all the talent we needed or the coaches to coach up what talent we did have.
With that said the recation to Saturdays game is just one big release of pent up frustration. Frustration of having to listen to and read what the bees wrote EVERY SINGLE DAY since beating us last year. Then having the AJC writers pile on about Tech and how they are now the POWER in the state after one bad year by us and a decent year by them. Frustration. This dawg fan expects to comete year in and year out for SEC titles. Kind of like we did earlier in Richts tenure. With a change in the DC and Richt getting involved on the offensive side a little more UGA isn’t as far off as many people think. Loaded with talent would be an understatement. Getting the coaching staff right won’t be hard. As bitter as this season has been, you are damn right we should be celebrating beating a #7 ranked Tech. A #7 ranked anybody I think we would be happy.

Only if UAT wins. Look at Alabama close wins sometimes with help of officials? Their week schedule, of the current top 25 ranked teams they played no one in top 10 and only two in the top 25. Off season for SEC. Lets not kid anyone. Who have they rolled over recently.

Hardly any chance of Nebraska beating Texas. Even less chance of the SECCG loser playing for the NC. Alabama should be a slight favorite in a game that is nearly too close to call. I see Bama 2009 slightly better than Bama 2008. I see the opposite when I watch Florida.
Either of these teams beats Texas. Their defense is too soft.

I sure hope there is not a rematch. Yuck. I can hardly stand the thought of watching the SEC Champ game as it is.
It is hard to stomach the two fan bases already. Why not just have AL and FL play each other every week. Then the media can get it on with Saban and Tebow every single day.
While the GA fans are happy to see Tebow graduate, ESPN is crying all day at the loss of their man crush. It’s is really gross to watch and to listen too. Good Luck next year Timmy…..

There’s absolutely no point in having Bama-Florida twice. If one beats one, and then the reverse happens in the Nat’l Championship Game, then you’ve resolved nothing because they are now 1-1 against each other. So the team that wins the 2nd game is the better of the two because it’s the second game? Please.
You have to have TCU slide up if Texas loses.

The winner Saturday is the SEC Champion, and only conference champions should go to the BCS title game…period. Same with Michigan and Ohio State a few years ago. If not, what purpose does Saturday’s game serve. The winner go to the NC game and the loser goes to the Sugar Bowl (and proably gets beat again because they lost the SEC title game). It is sad that the Sugar Bowl no longer has meaning for SEC teams. Imagine if there was a playoff. It senario would be even worse for non title game teams. I personally wish there wasn’t a NC game…just the bowl games like years ago. The other big bowls are just paper wrapping now. The only game that matters in the NC game, and that is bad for college football in my opinion. A playoff system would be even worse for major college football as well.

m,
The old sheriff got re-elected Saturday nite. Wonder if it will be another 7 year term. You should change your “annual beating of the Dawgs” to once every decade upset of the Dawgs. No mudholes on my arse as you predicted. Finally, that 4-3 ACC vs SEC record ended up 2-5 with wins over Vandy and Miss. St. that had a combined SEC record of
3-13 so congratulations on that big accomplishment.
To real Ga Tech fans–congratulations on a great season and make it even better by taking care of business in Tampa. See you next year in Athens and I’m sure it will be competitive again.

They are not going to have two teams that have a possibility of leaving controversy on the table play each other. They whoever the hell they are, go out of their way to leave messes like you are describing out of the equations of National Championships. If Alabama beats Florida they will be crying the blues if they have to play them again, and then Florida beats Alabama in the championship there would be more crying about how unfair it is. Florida State got a rematch with Florida because Spurrier made so much noise about late hits. He took the attention off what was a national championship and put it on FSU and cheap shots. FSU couldn’t wait to show these guys what for and Spurrier had them and the national championship exactly where he wanted them. Modern day NCAA doesn’t care about anything except a clear champion right or wrong they want a clear king of college football to be their poster child. That is why Georgia played Hawaii two years ago instead of USC in the Rose Bowl. You cannot have two beauty contest when their is just one crown.

If this happens its complete BS!!!!! I like Alabama over UF and I know both teams are better than Texas, TCU, and CINN however if Georgia 2 years ago who was the Hottest team who best LSU the National Champions why in the world did Georgia not play LSU or Ohio State then in the National Title why because Georgia doesn’t get any love like everybody gets on Florida’s Sac as well as Alabama’s! I’m so sick of hearing how much UF, USC, UT the real UT in texas, Oklahoma, and even Bama, and LSU as these top tier teams, even notre dame gets more love than Georgia has. Besides this year they have been the most consistant team in the Nation. I loved to get what TCU or Cinncy can do against Bama!

PS-Before you make your USC comments just remember this, if it weren’t for USC whipping Bama in 1970, the SEC would not exist. Well it would be more like an IVY league conference due to the lack of desegregation.
So Bama fans, when you see Ingram running in for a TD…thank USC!
Gator fans, when Tebow hands off to Emanuel Moody and he scores..thank USC!
