Georgia Tech rolls over Georgia

Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving. It’s Rivalry Week or, what a friend of mine likes to call “Hate Week.” No conference championships are on the line but a lot of feelings are. Some teams could lose a shot at the national championship or a BCS bid by getting beat by their rival. That makes it hurt twice as much.

If not for Georgia’s collapse against Kentucky we would have gone 10-0 last week. But for the year we are 89-31 (and yes, we don’t use the point spread) for those of you keeping score at home.

Here we go with the next to last Fearless Friday Forecast for 2009:

1. Georgia at Georgia Tech: Georgia Tech is brimming with confidence as it goes for its second straight win over the Bulldogs. Georgia, meanwhile, just doesn’t seem to have any answers after last week’s meltdown against Kentucky. Athletically, Georgia should be able to hang around but there is no evidence that the Bulldogs can handle a tough, physical football game for four quarters. That is exactly what Georgia Tech will give them. Georgia Tech 38, Georgia 21.

2. Florida State at Florida: There will be a lot of emotion on the field before this game. Tim Tebow and Florida’s ultra-successful senior class (46-6) will be playing their last home game. Florida State coach Bobby Bowden will be making his last visit to The Swamp as the Seminoles head coach (Even if he comes back next season, the 2010 game will be in Tallahassee). Florida State’s offense, led by freshman quarterback E.J. Manuel, can move the ball. But the defense just can’t stop anybody. Florida is just too strong. The Gators roll and start getting ready for Alabama. Florida 35, Florida State 14.

3. Alabama at Auburn (Friday): Twenty years ago Alabama was ranked No. 2 and headed to a possible national championship when the Crimson Tide was upset at Auburn. But that Auburn team had a great defense and was deep enough to keep from getting worn down. Alabama is on a mission to get back to the SEC championship game and beat Florida. Auburn will make it close early on emotion, but eventually Alabama will get some turnovers and put the Tigers away. Alabama 31, Auburn 10.

4. Arkansas at LSU: I don’t have the words to explain how much LSU’s Les Miles needs to win this game. The LSU fan base has turned up the heat on Miles and his staff since last week’s horrific loss to Ole Miss. Arkansas, however, is playing very, very well. Behind Ryan Mallett the Razorbacks have scored on 41 of 42 possessions (32 touchdowns, nine field goals) in the opponent’s red zone. LSU gets the edge because it is playing at home and because it has a sense of desperation. LSU 24, Arkansas 20.

5. Tennessee at Kentucky: Since freshman Morgan Newton took over at quarterback, the Wildcats (7-4) have been very difficult to stop on offense. Two weeks ago Tennessee (6-5) got drilled by Ole Miss and last week looked lethargic in beating Vanderbilt (31-16). The winner of this one is likely headed to the Outback Bowl on New Year’s Day. That should get both sides pretty excited. This week’s upset special is: Kentucky 21, Tennessee 20.

6. Ole Miss at Miss. State: Thanks to Dexter McCluster, Ole Miss is finally playing like the team projected to be so good in the preseason. The Rebels (8-3) can lock up a bid to the Capital One Bowl on New Year’s Day with an impressive win against their state rival. Ole Miss might come out a little flat after an emotional win last week against LSU. But it still has too much firepower. Ole Miss 27, Miss. State 21.

7. South Carolina at Clemson: Few teams in the country are playing as well as Clemson, which has scored 34 or more points in its last six games. Clemson’s C.J. Spiller is still in the Heisman Trophy discussion, so look for him to have a big day against a beat up South Carolina defense. Clemson 24, South Carolina 17.

8. Virginia Tech at Virginia: It’s been a strange year for Virginia Tech (8-3) but the Hokies have a chance to win 10 games against with a victory here and another in the bowl game. Virginia (3-8) will likely be playing its last game under head coach Al Groh. Virginia Tech 27, Virginia 17.

9. North Carolina at N.C. State: North Carolina has been struggling on offense for most of the season but it won’t matter against an N.C. State defense that has given up 30 or more points eight times this season. The Tar Heels finish 9-3 and may be headed to the Chick-fil-A Bowl. North Carolina 38, N.C. State 17.

10. Oklahoma State at Oklahoma: Quarterback Zac Robinson practiced this week and could be back in the lineup. A win probably puts the Cowboys (9-2) in a BCS bowl. Oklahoma State hasn’t won in Norman since 2001, when Les Miles was the head coach. Go with the Cowboys. Oklahoma State 28, Oklahoma 21.

Monte Kiffin showed he can coach up kids to play defense against pro set style offenses. His problem has been against those running a form of ‘Wildcat’. Four of the five losses to offenses that lined up with success against Tennessee using this set : Auburn, Florida, Alabama, Ole MS…Sure, I hope the 24 straight wins over Kentucky becomes 25 but the key to stopping Kentucky is to tackle the man with the ball. That is usually Randall Cobb in yet another Wildcat formation…Meekly I add, Tennessee wins 27-24.

Texas sure didn’t look great last night. This is why CF is a joke. A playoff should have been in place 30 years ago. Cause every year there isn’t one, you can’t say for sure who the best team is.

this year millions of turkeys were slaughtered for thanksgiving.

on saturday, another turkey (UGA) will be slaughtered…and, as usual, it won’t be Mark Ray Donnan’s fault. The best thing that can happen to UGA is a tech version of the 51 points we hung on them early in Mark Ray’s carreer. Of course, there will be excuses for that as well.

the blind arrogance of this coaching staff just never ceases to amaze me.

it is as if they were sitting in a boat that was sinking and staring at the hole in the bottom of the boat…well, we are going to do something about that hole, but right now, I am focused on rowing the boat to the next destination. meanwhile, the water is up around their necks….keep rowing Mark Ray…keep rowing…you have the best gameplan in the history of gameplanning…..

Tony, according to YOUR picks, the sec will have lost the season series with the ACC by losing 4 out of 7. This is the second year in a row (last year was 6 out of 10 for the ACC over the sec in the regular season).

Also, when TECH stomps ugag, TECH will undefeated in the sec this year with a 3-0 record!!

Why don’t you just come out and admit that this bullshiiiite about sec superiority is a MYTH!!!

The sec is the weakest that I have ever seen it in my lifetime…the sec has two decent teams and 10 patsies.

If we had a real playoff with 16 teams, the sec would be exposed for the hyped up weak sister that it really is.

But I hope you all enjoy Saturday nights ANNUAL STOMPING OF THE DAWGS!!!!

In ALL rivalry games, it pays to EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED.

1. GT will beat GA (again, but closer than most expect) GT by 9 pts.

2. Clemson will beat USC (again, but very close)
Could be lots of passing/scoring here.

(Drumroll)

3. FSU will SHOCK THE WORLD with upset of Florida at The Swamp.

Retiring FSU DC Mickey Andrews will have “something special”
dialed up for Tebow & the Gators.

Gators miss the winning FG on the last play. FSU:31 FL:29

ACC will score the “Trifecta” on saturday

m. Tech played Vandy, Mississipi State, and Georgia which are the bottom feeders of the SEC. Not exactly the standard to judge a conference by. Winning 3 out of the last 4 national championships and the world knowing that the winner of the SEC championship game authomatically goes to the BCS title game is. That distinction does not go with the winner of the ACC title game…not yet…and probably never will. Running 10-1 by beating teams (but not Miami) in the ACC and beating the bottom feeders in the SEC does not make you.

HOW DO YOU KEEP ON SPEWING THAT GARBAGE!

You prove your stupidity by leaving out 2 bowl games, GT plays the 3 weakest teams in the SEC and then you brag about it. If the SEC is as weak as you say then the ACC is absolutely pitiful.

So you are saying that the SEC has to be down for the ACC to win? What does that say about your conference?

Also, a freshman QB playing in the SWAMP on Tebow’s last game there with a banged up line. Good luck with that. And what do you think Charlie Strong and Meyer have been doing all week, sittiing on their ar$$Es and picking their butts. You don’t think the Gators aren’t going to throw the kitchen sink at Manuel? Joe Cox vs. Nesbitt= Win

November 27th, 2009

Joe Cox has outpassed Nesbitt: td’s, yards, etc.

Tech’s pass defense is pathetic.

Georgia’s receivers will get it done with or without Green.

It's all about the money

November 27th, 2009
9:38 am

Chris,

It’s all about the money…. The SEC is gifted its position because of the money. If it were not about the money, then UTAH would have been national champs last year.

Utah had a perfect record last year and made a Bama team that went undefeated through the regular season look slow, dumb, and confused.

Another reason the SEC is where it is because in general they do not take risks. It is well known that the SEC has the easiest OOC schedule and that’s why their acronym is interpreted as “Schedule Easy Competition”.

If UGA makes tech go the length of the field everytime they score they can keep it under 30. GA needs to play great special teams and have no turnovers to win. I am resigned to another lackluster defensive effort. I don’t think Martinez has it in him to put a wrench in the double slot offense. In addition, GA’s front 4 won’t get consistent penetration and be disruptive.

Money…the SEC’s all-time out of conference bowl record is pretty good…and their record in the last 3 NC games is pretty good, too. If Utah had played Bama for the National Title last year, Bama would have won easily. Bama was obviously uninterested after losing to Florida last year in the SEC title games. They really had nothing to play for. Utah had everything to play for. Not an excuse, just the truth. If they had played Florida, they would have lost by 20 points or more.

All the u[sic]ga family around the Thanksgiving table yesterday had the feeling of condemned men knowing their date with the chair was coming very soon when the subject of the Clean Old-Fashioned Hate Game came up :) . Tech is amped up, 10-1, at home, with a night kickoff (so the Tech alum will have plenty of time to imbibe and get LSU-like). u[sic]ga’s own crowd gave up on them with two minutes to go against Kentucky last week, down only one score and about to get the ball back. GT will destroy u[sic]ga tomorrow night and TB, like you said the other day, I think CP”Goferit”J will drop the hammer on the Muttlanders.

Its all about the money, You obviously don’t much about football. Bama looked pitiful against Utah yes. But they were let down because the hopes were so high for an SEC championship and a national title that the game didn’t mean much to the fans or the team. On top of that nobody in the country thought Utah was really any good. Bama underestimated them and weren’t prepared plain and simple. Every team at one point or another has that problem. That game was set up perfectly for an upset and I knew it going in.

If Bama hadn’t lost to Florida and played Utah in the title game it would have been much much different. Utah was still good enough last year that they could beat ANYONE that was sleeping. Florida Texas and Oklahoma were no exception.

The ACC MUST play tougher OOC games because of a weaker conference. The ACC is probably the 4th best conference whereas the SEC is first or second. Ole Miss, LSU Florida and Bama could beat any ACC team with ease this year. GT fans don’t have a leg to stand on since they are playiing the 3 worst teams in the SEC.

Bama has been trying to add tougher OOC games and is continuing to do so. The next 2 seasons we will play Penn State. It’s not needed but they are doing it anyways. Thats Balls if you ask me especially since they have to play 6 SEC teams after their off weeks. Thats tough I don’t care who you are!

Look, as UGA and SEC fans, we cannot continue to talk out of both sides of our mouths.

When another team beats two SEC teams on the road as part of their non conference schedule, we cannot at the same time berate them for playing “bottom feeders” while we tell anyone who will listen how tough it is to play on the road in the SEC, no matter who it is.

Kudos to Tech for scheduling three SEC teams as part of their OOC slate.

Compare that to Florida, Texas, etc OOC schedules…..Tech’s is much more impressive.

Anyway, I cannot disagree with Tony’s assessment. I don’t know how we’re feeling emotionally right now, but I think whatever motivation we come out with will be gone somtime during the second quarter.

Just not our year, this year.

KY fans are still peeing in their beds over the win against GA. TN Tech would have beat GA if they had gave them FOUR turnovers in the 2nd half. Still shaking my head about that. Anyway, TN will stomp the kittens, PETA will hate TN after the innocent slaughter at Commonwealth stadium. I have the dawgs in an upset, mainly because I am sick of tech fans who can’t handle a little success.

ACC will score the “Trifecta” on saturday
and go 6-1 vs SEC for 2009 regular seaosn.

The only truth in this post is that this person is indeed a Junkie!

Its so good to see GT ranked over the mutts. Its been years since Tech has had such a positive outlook on the program. I’m just gonna sit back and enjoy. But my fellow fans its not over till the end of the 4th quarter. It will not last forever. UGA will spend billions to get their program back. The SEC is about winning. PERIOD. U Gotta B Kidding Me,

The stands may be full of UGA fans at the beginning, but for how long? Will the “faithful” hang around if Tech gets up on the Pups by a couple of touchdowns? The game last week was not settled, the Pups could have won, there was plenty of time to do it, and what do the UGA fans do? Empty the stands and diss the team. BEFORE it was certain that they had lost!

That will affect the Pup players Saturday night. And, they would have every right to flip off the fans just like the fans flipped them off last week.

You can laugh at the Tech fans all you want, calls us nerds and so forth, but when the game is still not certain, and there is a chance that the Jackets could pull out a W in the last few seconds, the GT faithful will not walk out on the team, yelling, cursing, and flipping them off.

We will see who the true fans are on Saturday night… the ones who stay till the end of the game, win or lose. If CPJ runs up the score, and I hope he does, you so-called UGA fans will get everything you deserve. YOU DON’T WALK OUT ON YOUR TEAM IF THERE IS A CHANCE THEY COULD STILL WIN!!!!!!!!!! NOT IF YOU SAY YOU LOVE YOUR TEAM!!!!!!!!!

If you do walk out, then it proves your are just a bunch of red-neck, in-bred, two-faced losers and deserve all the derision from all the other schools you play against. GEEZ!

How about Stanford (+41 line) beating USC – Twice?! UGA is very capable of beating Tech. I’m not saying the will. But, any one who knows college football, knows upsets do happen… with regularity. So, look out tough guy! I think all of these braggarts are a little nervous, and they’re shiiiting out any vile they can… ’cause, if they can’t be sure they can win it, they want to at least make it as miserable as they can before hand. I am thinking Georgia is soft and Holiday football games are made for teams on a mission, Georgia has not got one. Somewhere in their souls Georgia has got to be tired of getting their rears kicked by lesser opponents, I just hope that turkey slows em down one more time and they can fix what is broke for next year. Two losses to Tech will make that happen faster, a win over Tech might be better for Tech in the long run, because Georgia will think they have arrived and they have not. Tech will only get better every year, no matter what happens here.

we have to wonder how much espn ponied up to the refs to pull those games out for their 2 sec darlings.

wrt utah an bama…. so your saying that bama has NO heart or pride? that is a definite possibility. a good team finds ways to win when their not at their best. obviously bama is not a good team.

wrt gt vs lsu…. that was a set up game. lsu was healthy for the first time last year in the bowls. gt’s ol was so decimated by the time the bowls came around that they had a tight end playing on the line. some of the gt ol were about 250 to the lsu 300 pound behemoths. even with all that it was not lsu that beat gt last year it was gt. we gave lsu 17 points.

why is it that when an sec bottom feeder almost beats a team at the top than its because of the sec strength. when an acc team pummels that same bottom feeder its because they were an sec bottom feeder and not a good team.

Unfortunately, TCU’s conference and therefore record does not measure up to Texas, Bama, or Florida…and they will not play for the NC if two or those three teams are undefeated. Student body of UGA Undergrads+Grads: 34,180
Seating Capacity of Sanford Stadium: 92,746
Average ACTUAL Attendance for 6 home games this year: UNKNOWN… because they don’t list actual attendance on the UGA website only tickets sold, so every game shows its a sellout.

Granted UGA has a larger fan base, student body, and bigger stadium to accomodate same. Tech is smaller in all points, but has the better team this year, and last year as well.

You can’t tell me that “every” seat was filled at Sanford Stadium at every game this year, the televised games showed empty seats there, too. Especially towards the end of the Kentucky game and the fans were showing their @zzes on national TV, leaving before the game was over and while the Pups still had a chance to win it.

Classless, disrespectful, embarrassing, and uncalled for. Its not like the Pups had been beaten badly every game they played and deserved to be shown some dissatisfaction from the fans. It is a good team and has had moments of bad or inconsistent play. Not necessarily worthy of being disrespected in such a in-your-face way on national tv. Geez!

I will really enjoy watching the red and black bleed out of the stands in the second half Saturday night when y’all come to get your butt-whoopin down on North Ave. I still respect the team, they have the ability to win this weekend, but I have lost a lot of respect for fair-weather fans that so easily flip off their team on a national stage.

I predict that the ACC teams facing SEC competition this weekend will underestimate the quality of their opposition based upon their records in SEC conference play. Both South Carolina and Georgia look like easy pickings on paper, yet they will both present a long row to hoe on game-day. Both of these games should be well worth watching. ACC fans, I would rather be good and hated than average and irrelevent in the national picture. No one gives the ACC any thought at all about if they will go to the title game. That is when you know you suck! Have a 10-1 season and NOBODY even considers you playing for a title. LOL The freakin’ non-bcs conferences have a better shot for crying out loud.

I’m lovin’ it! Everyone cries about the SEC but nobody is good enough to shut us up!

Barnhart’s doing his best this week hoping to motivate his alma mater … I sure hope it doesn’t work.

This GT fan believes GA’s receivers (with or without Green) will be the best group of WRs GT’s D has faced all year. I could see GA being very successful in the passing game, which will only open things up even more for their much-improved running game. GT’s D needs to be the one that showed-up for UNC, VT, VA, and Duke. However, it’s a little scary/misleading from my perspective b/c UNC at the time was anemic on O, and VA & Duke have nowhere near the talent GA has on O. And don’t forget about has bad GT’s kickoff coverage is … and GA’s run a few back for scores this season. (GT’s will need to overcome GA’s special teams score(s) on Sat.)

GT’s d-line needs to have a good game; limit the run game, and pressure Cox into some bad decisions.

For GT on O, if Nesbitt is accurate in the passing game, and the Jackets protect the ball, it should be very difficult for GA stop Nesbitt, Thomas & Co. with any consistency.

I’m definitely not crazy enough to count the Dogs out in this game; they have too much talent. But I do see it being tough for GA to get the W if GT protects the ball, and stays healthy. I see a high-scoring game similar to 2008.

I definitely see the Jackets winning, but I think Georgia’s going to score more than 21 points. Keep in mind Tech’s defense is worse than ours. It’s the same defense that allowed 30 points from Vandy. Now THAT’S bad. I see it more as being 45-35 or something. I still think there’s a great chance for an upset. Tech barely sqeaked by some pretty bad teams this year. Their confidence might get the best of them.

BankerDawg,

Great too see that a loyal Dawg/SEC fan can have a realistic post without going all “SEC iz da heezy” all over one’s self. I HAVE repeatedly said over the past couple of seasons that top to bottom the SEC is the best confernce. The PAC 10 is the second best conference and closing. Yes, my beloved Trojans have had an off year this season. Not since Coach Carolls first have we had this many losses. It happens. We will load up again at the feeding trough that is national signing day and Pete will fix those things that are broken and we will resume our annual butt kicking of the rest of the country. (Think OOC) I am happy for the GT fans as they have endured many NOT so successful seasons in the recent past. The ACC is a farily good conference but not a top three conf. DAWGnation, y’all need to ease up a bit on CMR and let the man coach. As previously posted by me: “Y’all won the Sugar Bowl vs. Hawaii and everone thought he was ready for saint hood, now you have a set back and y’all are ready to string him up”??? Ease up on the man, he is a good person and good coach who represents your school very well. GT fans who are bagging on UGA VII: NOT COOL FOOL!!!!!

‘Bama will win today and take care of business against the lizards. They will have their hands full with Texas in the NC game as Colt will be basking in the glow of winning the HEISMAN that should have been his LAST YEAR! NC Game result: Texas 38 ‘Bama 24 SEC fans don’t read too much into last nights A & M game (RIVALRY GAME) as Texas being “weak” on D; they are stout as is ‘Bama but Will Muschamp KNOWS defense and he’ll have sevral weeks to tweek the scheme to slow down Ingram & co. Texas has the #1 D in the country, and A & M is a very good young and coming team that will certainly be making noise the next few years.

SC RULES, I agree with everything you said except for Texas winning. Bama’s D is better than Texas and typically Big12 offenses have a hard time against SEC defense. However Bama’s offense is weaker than I would like. Running game is fantastic but I am concerned about passing. Just in case you didn’t know Bama is 0-7-1 against Texas so I would imagine there will be alot of motivation in this one. Alabama 31 Texas 28. Tough game both ways!

This two-time Tech alum is facing the harsh reality. Paul Johnson’s first year follwoing the honeymoon will be a rough one. Tech will lose to Clemson, Miami, F$U, Virginia Tech, Virginia, and Georgia. That is a 6-6 record, just enough to land in Boise in December. (Remember, you heard it here first.) Fortunately, Johnson can handle the pressure and the 2009 rebuilding year will be but a stepping stone to productive seasons. As much as I hate to agree with Dave Braine, Tech will not see another ten-win REGULAR season in our lifetimes … unless the NCAA allows a TWENTY-game schedule.

For Dogs, the colors were black … and blue
7:40 pm October 31, 2009, by Bill King

Florida defeated the Georgia Bulldogs again Saturday in Jacksonville with a large assist from … the Georgia Bulldogs.

After spotting the Gators two touchdowns in the first quarter, Georgia managed to pull back within four points. But the two bugaboos that have plagued the Dogs all season derailed any chance of staying in the game: penalties and turnovers.

The Dogs had eight penalties in the first half. They fixed that problem in the second half, drawing only one flag, but switched to their other favorite way of shooting themselves in the foot, turnovers, with four.

I don’t think that’s what they had in mind when Mark Richt and his staff have said the Dogs need to play “balanced” football.

Starter Joe Cox was lifted halfway through the fourth quarter after throwing his third pick of the half, and then we got the answer to the question of why we haven’t seen more of Logan Gray at QB this season. He is an absolutely terrible passer. The interception he threw from the Georgia end zone to Brandon Spikes, who literally walked in for a score, should become part of an instructional video on how not to play quarterback.

There were positives in the game for the Dogs, mainly in the second quarter when they showed their resiliency and threatened to make a game of it. While Florida looked on its first two drives like it was going to move the ball at will, the Georgia defense stiffened after that and was doing what it could to keep the game in hand, considering the Gators have Tim Tebow. But the second half giveaway staged by Cox and the Georgia offense put the defense in an untenable position, giving Florida a short field too many times. And Mike Bobo actually called a decent game, mixing up the run and pass and moving the ball … until a penalty or turnover would kill the drive.

Basically, the lack of discipline that has characterized recent Richt teams undercut everything good that they did. It’s tough enough to beat a team like Florida if you play your best football. Make that many mistakes and it’s impossible.

One last thought: I’m sure the idiot fringe of Dogs fandom will blame the loss on Georgia reviving the black britches for the first time in 11 years and breaking out black helmets for the first time in UGA history. That’s asinine. The color of what you’re wearing doesn’t cause you to commit penalties or turn the ball over.

Florida won because they’re the better team. But Georgia made it easy for them with too many stupid mistakes.

Another black day in Jax reveals UGA as second-rate
8:39 pm October 31, 2009, by Mark Bradley

Jacksonville — The game was a total loss, but the lesson imparted need not be. After yet another lost Saturday in Duval County, this much is beyond dispute: Georgia is no longer a major player in its division, let alone the nation.

Mark Richt began his somber media briefing by saying, “Well, here we are again.” And there they were, lopsided losers. It was 49-10 last season and 41-17 this time, and for all the good work Richt did in the early part of this decade, he and his program have been lapped by Urban Meyer. And Richt, once so clever and driven, seems to have run out of ideas.

He tried the color-scheme gimmick Saturday, presenting his players with black helmets after they’d warmed up in the usual red headgear. The upshot of this was to make Georgia look like an Arena league team and to cow the nation’s No. 1 team not one whit. After 11 1/2 minutes, the guys in the orange hats led the guys in the black hats 14-0.

“It’s not the helmet,” safety Reshad Jones said. “It’s what inside the helmet.”

Well, yes. With an extra week to prepare, Willie Martinez seemed even more witless than usual. As bad as the Gators’ first two touchdowns were, the third was an affront to everything Red and Black. Facing third-and-3 at the Georgia 23 with 1:32 left in the half, Florida ran a simple option. Tim Tebow faked a handoff and burst up the middle. He scored the touchdown that put him ahead of the hallowed Herschel Walker without being touched.

“They’re a good team,” said defensive end Justin Houston. “But it seemed like every time we made a bad play, they capitalized on it.”

In the first half Georgia had eight penalties. In the second it had four interceptions. If it was to have any chance against the Gators, it had to play a clean game. Instead it authored another in a series of messes.

If we’re to believe recruiting rankings, the gulf between Georgia and Florida shouldn’t be so pronounced. But Saturday was another installment of men against boys, and it called to mind the barb Steve Spurrier sunk into Ray Goff in this stadium 18 years ago: “Georgia gets all these players — I don’t know what happens to them.”

Players go to Florida and get, to invoke another Spurrier-ism, coached up. Players come to Georgia and are left to their own devices. Martinez is a substandard defensive coordinator, and no other position coach can be said to have done fabulous work. (Unless you count Kevin Butler, who isn’t a coach but who did sire the prodigious punter Drew Butler.)

Said Richt: “We’re 4-4 this season. I don’t think it’s an indictment of the program. I think it’s an indictment of where we are this year.”

Except Georgia has underachieved three times in the past four seasons, and as Richt himself noted Saturday: “There’s no guarantee of a bowl. The question is, will we play a game when we don’t do something that hinders us from being the best we can be?”

The Bulldogs have never lost more than four games under Richt, but they’ve never been 4-4 under this coach, either. Regarding possible changes, he said: “It’s not good to make decisions within minutes of an emotional game. You’ve got to settle your mind and settle your spirit, and then see where you are.”

As darkness fell on Halloween 2009, Georgia was again where it has been too often. The program that has all the resources was left to wonder why it has fallen so far behind Florida. And the ugly truth has never been more apparent: Florida might or might not have better players, but it absolutely has better coaches.

ChrisF;

Didn’t know that BAMA was winless against the Horns. I remember one of the greatest Cotton Bowls I’ve ever seen (can’t remember the date Texas 14 Bama 12) all game long Bama had Texas stymied but to Texas’ credit they kept Bama out of the endzone. It was late in the 4th qtr and Texas’ QB had his bell rung and coach Akers ran out a young and promising Soph Mike Trevorbeck (spelling may be a bit off) he lead the Horns on two length of the field drives in the final two minutes to pull out the win!

Flaskback 2009;

It will only take teams a bit before they figure out how to shut down the option and then Tec is done. (????) Uh, flashback too the 70’s: Bama, OU, Houston & Texas ALL ran the option. Bama had QUITE a run as memory serves! Didn’t seem like too many people (SEC or others) figured it out!!

If you can’t put Kentucky away, that’s just sad
12:44 am November 22, 2009, by Bill King

Wow, that was two really ugly quarters of football Georgia played in the second half Saturday night.

With the apparent focus of a 3-year-old child, the Dogs squandered a 20-6 halftime lead by turning the ball over four times.

How pathetic was it? When the Dogs got the ball back at midfield with just under 2 minutes left in order to tie up the game and Joe Cox proceeded to throw an interception on the very first play, nobody seemed surprised.

Which was uglier, his first interception or that second one? How’s that for a discussion point?

Longtime blog commenter Cuz, with whom I watched the game, summed it up pretty well when he said the second half was like a “greatest hits” of all the bad plays Mark Richt’s 2009 team has committed. Make that “greatest hurts.”

Special teams? Pretty awful, from Branden Smith’s fumble of the opening kickoff of the second half to the fact that Richt and Co. were so scared of giving up a long kickoff return that they routinely gave Kentucky the ball near midfield through a series of poorly covered pooch and squib kicks.

The offense? In the second half they acted like the ball was a hot potato. And when Kentucky made halftime adjustments to stuff the Dogs’ running game, Georgia seemed to be floundering. The Dogs had no sustained drive in the second half, with the only scoring drive consisting of two long passes. What happened to Orson Charles in the second half?

And while the defense was put in difficult short-field situations by the lousy kickoffs and offensive turnovers, the tackling at times was just horrendous. And on that dump screen pass that Kentucky turned into a long run down the sideline for a touchdown to tie the game at 27-27, Willie Martinez’s defense looked absolutely flat-footed.

It’s unfortunately been a hallmark of Richt teams that they have a tough time handling success, holding a lead and putting a team away. And that was even true with teams that were much more talented than this group.

There was plenty of blame to go around, but the bottom line is that this is a very poorly coached group of unmotivated players.

Remember the darkest days of the Goff and Donnan eras? It was that bad.

As 7 lousy seasons and 4 straight embarrassing bowl losses didn’t ruin Tech’s chances for getting better, one 10 win season that was below expectations followed by a really lousy season will not permanently impede UGA’s chances to become more competitive in the SEC and regain dominance over Ga Tech.
This season is a wake up call. It will force change for the better. CPJ being at Tech will actually force UGA to get better than they would have been. Beating Tech will not be so easy in the future.

So, those who win have the bragging rights and those who lose strive to get better. That is the way it has always been. That is the way it will always be. Tech will win tomorrow night and all of us Dawg fans will be pissed for another year. Tech owned the Bulldogs in the 50’s. Uga has owned them since Dooley came. This coaching staff will have to step up or get out because losing to Tech is not allowed at UGA. Ask Jim Donnan.

So for M and Yellow fuzz and all the rest of that mature tech following this is like mental masturbation getting after us Dawg fans but the worm will turn cause it always does.

At this point I am praying for an amazing upset but just really hoping the Dawgs keep it respectable. I’m not sure this bunch can though. They have an uncanny nack of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory (See LSU and Kentucky).

Bama proved their championship caliber today. Florida should prove their caliber tomorrow and that will make for one heck of a SEC title game. I am pulling for a Nebraska upset of Texas to throw the BCS into heywire. Who then? TCU, Boise State, or Cinncinati (who may not have their current head coach for the title game)? I say TCU should be there regardless. They would easily beat Texas, I believe, based on what I witnessed last night. Cinncinati has a great offense, but no defense. Boise State would not be TCU. So I think TCU would go if Texas is upset. What happens if FSU by miracle upsets Florida and then Florida beat Bama. Who plays Texas? If Florida, TCU, Cinnicinati, and Boise State would withdraw from the NCAA. But Florida is not going to lose to FSU. So it comes down to Texas beating Nebraska to play either Bama or Florida. The rest can only complain. Hate the system, but it is far better than a playoff system which would make games like yesterday, today, and Saturday meaningless. That would be bad for college football and the rivalaries we love so much. Bama for example, would have played only their reserves today, killing the rivalary deal with Auburn. Same for the Gators tomorrow. So watch what you wish for you BCS haters.

The only thing that matters is this…Tech will control the clock in the second quarter and will own the 3rd quarter, adding on 21 points during the long drives that destroys the weak UGA defense. After getting pounded each play in the first half, No. 21 breaks one for 82 yards in the 3rd quarter. He then proceeds to run over each of the UGA players late in the 3rd and all the 4th quarter. And by the way, Nesbit connects three times to Thomas for 212 yards passing…7 for 11 passing, 240 yards. Tech rolls 61 to 28 and beats UGA by more of a spread than GT beat Vandy….Tech will add up it’s greatest offensive game in the Paul Johnson era…695 yards of total offense….Joe Cox has 2 INTs, the running back by committee has two fumbles….4 turnovers for UGA and 9 penalties for 85 yards…the only bright spot is the two kickers for UGA….talk at ya tomorrow at 11:30pm for the victory blog…. What’s the Good Word? We say “To Hell with Georgia…and Piss on UGAs grave”

GT should win. Hope it is a good game and the players on both teams get out of the game healthy. If GT turns the ball over three or four times and UGA does not then UGA has a chance to shock GT.

Those SEC Officials robbed us of another win. Tech wasn’t really 4 touchdowns better than we were, it was closer than it looked. CWM is to blame, it’s all his fault. Our dog ate the game plan, and then he died. I had to leave early, it’s a long drive back to Athens. What? The game hasn’t been played yet? Oh, OK, I’ll just go ahead and post this to beat the rush.

“It’s all about the money….

Like the 2 bully brothers who would talk big, but never fight anyone besides the 10 girls in their own family.”

Barnhart…should I call you Tonya or Mrs college football? Because predictions like that don’t help your cause much.

Tech….your not that good and neither is your conference. You just got punked by a mid tier sec team with a questionable defense. Even when we have our worst team in decades we still slam you with 300+ yards on the ground. LMAO tonight. Go Dawgs!

I can’t say the same for Florida vs. FSU. — that one will be a lopsided blowout by the Gators.

Bobby, you had a good run. It’s time to hang up the cleats and spend more time with the Grand Young’uns.

Another season and as bad as I want to say the ACC sucks, the reality is there’s Florida and everyone else right now. So basically, Florida – good, everyone else – sucks. Tech players showed class in interviews after the game. Good luck to them in the ACC Championship. It’s got to hurt the game though to have it’s two teams lose to SEC foes leading into the game. I think our tough sched compared to Tech’s Vandy, Duke, Wake, UVA slate – helped the Dawgs tough this one out. Go Dawgs.

Okay, sports fans, there’s no need for trash talk. Here are the simple facts: in head-to-head contests in 2009, SEC teams won 5 and lost 2 of a total of 7 games played against ACC opponents.

The 5 SEC wins include all 3 season-ending in-state rivalry games (Florida-Florida State, Georgia-Georgia Tech, South Carolina-Clemson), one neutral site match-up of top teams (Alabama-Virginia Tech), and one early season contest between two middle-of-the-pack teams (South Carolina-NCSU). The 2 ACC wins include Georgia Tech victories over SEC cellar dwellers Vanderbilt and Mississippi State.

No smack talk, just the facts, ma’am.

Atlanta Gator;

How true about the “records & playin’ the game”; “if” GT had done this or “if” Clemson had done that etc… As I’ve said numerous times in these here posts the SEC is top to bottom the best conference, that doesn’t mean the rest aren’t closin’ the gap. The PAC 10 is getting very close, I would say, hell I don’t even need too; there was an article in the OC Register last month taken from ESPN about the PAC 10 being the best conference, yes, even better than the SEC. Now last time I checked ESPN is about as good a source for knowledge on college football as one can get. No, SECHomers, yer Uncle Zeke doesn’t count.
That being said, I have no problems givin’ the SEC its due; what the SEC has done year in and year out is pretty tough to match. My only issue with SECHomers is the fact that even when SC is on top, y’all cry “foul & cheaters etc…” but when y’all are actually CAUGHT cheatin’ then it’s “they made that cr@p up” while SC IS GUILTY even without being charged!
To get back to my point, Congrats to both the Lizards & the Elephants! You’ve both had great seasons again, good luck to both next week. I’ll enjoy watching the winner of that game LOSE to Texas in the BCS NC game!! Hook’em!!!

Atlanta Gator,

Sorry but I wasn’t able to get back to your question about the source for Charlie Weiss’s 17 million dollar buyout. I don’t remember but I think it was CBS Sports or espn magazine that I read that a couple of weeks ago.

Anyway, I was watching the post game show on ESPN and they confirmed this weekend that sources close to the program confirm that the figure is actually close to 18 million. WOW!!! You may or may not have seen that.

Since ND is a private institution the full number won’t be reported but I have seen it or heard it a few times now that its 17 or 18 million.

Also, nice succinct post on the ACC-SEC debate. I don’t want to rub it in too much on the ACC folks but the facts is the facts is the facts.

Tony’s picks were wrong and two 6-5 SEC teams beat the division
champs from the ACC. Which league is stronger? What a joke your opinion is. 10 bowl eligable teams from the SEC and all of them with 7 wins or more. Only 7 from the ACC, an averge of 9-3 in your championship game and FSU the worst 6-6 team in the country being one of the 7. Will be very intersting as the bowl season plays out. (PAC 10 5-0 in bowls last year)

I have great respect for the Eng school @ GT; I have had the pleasure of working with some top notch Eng’s out of that program. But alas, like the little blue freaks from Westwood (fUCLA) we, as UGA did last night, have to remind y’all that your once every decade “upset” is NOT a changing of the guard. Congrats on the fine season, enjoy it and the bowl to come but please; remember your place in the food chain here. WE (SC, UGA, BAMA, FLA, Texas) are at the top of said food chain, you, Clem, VaTech, fUCLA are at the bottom of said. We enjoy the meal, you ARE the meal.

DawginSC,

That is exactly what I’ve been trying to say these past few weeks. CMR is a very good coach a very good person and a very good representative of the University overall.

The DAWGS are dealing with the losses of some top notch talent to the draft as well as to injury, the fans (well so called fans) need to realize that. There are going to be years when a program (UGA, FLA BAMA TEXAS or SC) will find themselves on the short end of things. Fortunately for SC we have had a 7 year run of greatness. We lost 9 players from the defense ALONE to the draft this past spring. Would have been 10 had Taylor Mays (#2) come out early as predicted. Think about that 9 starters on one side of the ball then we lost our QB and a WR & OL all ot the draft. Not to mention the injuries that we’ve had this year, but that is no excuse as all teams suffer injuries. The young talent that have played so much this season for both UGA & SC will reap huge rewards next season with that experience add to that the incoming classes our two programs will have and we are stocking up fro a long run of success. In our case we have a pretty full cupboard to begin with, but there are times as rare as they may be where the success level does take a dip. No need to start reaching for the panic room button!

Go Dawgs! Fight On!!

Lake Oconee Dawg—-Perhaps you have misinterpreted my Page 1 comment. It was a prediction, not exclamation of glee at what I (and many others) assumed would be the outcome of this year’s UGA-GT game, largely based on the Dawgs’ unraveling over the past several weeks.

Congratulations to you and your Dawgs on toughing out a fine win against Tech. I stand corrected: there is apparently still some life left in those 2009 Dawgs yet.

DawginSC,

“Fortunately for SC we have had a 7 year run of greatness.”

From the outside, it looks more like an eight year run of mediocrity punctuated by one National Championship in 2004. Auburn fans don’t even want to acknowledge that one.

You have played in a relatively weak conference, although I am willing to admit that the PAC 10 has been improving recently. You keep saying that this is “one down year”. What was last year? Are you claiming a MNC for 2008? I know that you try to claim one for the 2003 season, although you didn’t play in the BCS Championship Game.

Here’s what you’ve done since Pete Carroll came on-board in 2001:

2001 – 6 & 6
2002 – 11 & 2 with losses to Kansas State and Washington State
2003 – 12 & 1 with an upset loss to 8 & 6 California
2004 – No BS, an actual National Championship !!!
2005 – Made it to the BCS Championship Game via the “Bush Push” vs. Notre dame and subsequently lost to Texas
2006 – The slide begins with a loss to unranked Oregon State and the regular season ends with a loss to 6 & 7 UCLA
2007 – The slide continues with a loss to 41 point underdog Stanford followed by another loss to Oregon
2008 – An early season upset loss to Oregon State continued a trend of choking against inferior opposition
2009 – Continuing the pattern of the previous three years, you have once again dropped games to inferior opponents. I guess you consider three such losses to constitute a “down year”?

The truth is that USC has won only one National Championship under Pete Carrol, and you have to go back to 1978 to find their previous NC win. USC has been pretty good for the past seven years, but they haven’t quite been “great”. Great teams win National Championships.

Every 5 to 8 years Georgia Tech wins a game against Georgia and pound their chest on how they will be doing it again for years to come. Then reality sits in and they see the win the previous year was just a fluke and the Dawgs rip off yet another 5 to 8 year winning streak and you can hear the Tech faithful whimper and whine. Its pretty much been that way since Bobby Dodd saw the writing on the wall and got out and retired.
Yes its been an off year for Georgia and still this happens to a Top 10 ACC Tech team.
Tech, Clemson and FSU were lined up and rolled over to the point you could hear the bowling pins smacked by the SEC bowling ball.
Tsk tsk tsk, you know, I almost ( almost) feel sorry for the North Ave Trade School fans who only get to see how a true major college football teams do it every other year but yet another lesson is learned and forgotten. I heard the Varsity is happy to have real fans of the game but alas alack, they wont be seeing them until 2 years from now.
30-24 -game one in the new Georgia winning streak that even now the Tech fans expect to see and feel for the next 5 to 8 years.

coach o;

Who gives a RIP about the Barners?!?!? In 2003 the AP saw fit to award the NC Title to the better team! Had LSU played us instead of Oklamo they would have had to wait until the game with the shrubs to raise the crystal ball! Funny how ACC fans have it spot on with SECHomers; if FLA/Bama goes undefeated, they had to plow through the “tough” SEC; but when an SEC suffers a loss to ACC or PAC 10 teams “those” SEC teams are bottom feeding cellar dwellars. Sorry but you need to quit talking out yer @ss with that LAMO statement.

Coach Carroll is a class act and one of the top three coaches in the game. CMR is another. So by my math that leaves just one other, hmmmm let me see who would that be, oh yeah, Mack Brown. Sorry Urban Cryer! We’ll see “how good you are” when this class leaves for the NFL and or prison.

Well, they do play in a powerhouse conference. At this point it appears that the top eight or 10 teams in the SEC would most likely beat champions of every other conference. Stay tuned.
