Georgia Tech rolls over Georgia

Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving. It’s Rivalry Week or, what a friend of mine likes to call “Hate Week.” No conference championships are on the line but a lot of feelings are. Some teams could lose a shot at the national championship or a BCS bid by getting beat by their rival. That makes it hurt twice as much.

If not for Georgia’s collapse against Kentucky we would have gone 10-0 last week. But for the year we are 89-31 (and yes, we don’t use the point spread) for those of you keeping score at home.

Here we go with the next to last Fearless Friday Forecast for 2009:

1. Georgia at Georgia Tech: Georgia Tech is brimming with confidence as it goes for its second straight win over the Bulldogs. Georgia, meanwhile, just doesn’t seem to have any answers after last week’s meltdown against Kentucky. Athletically, Georgia should be able to hang around but there is no evidence that the Bulldogs can handle a tough, physical football game for four quarters. That is exactly what Georgia Tech will give them. Georgia Tech 38, Georgia 21.

2. Florida State at Florida: There will be a lot of emotion on the field before this game. Tim Tebow and Florida’s ultra-successful senior class (46-6) will be playing their last home game. Florida State coach Bobby Bowden will be making his last visit to The Swamp as the Seminoles head coach (Even if he comes back next season, the 2010 game will be in Tallahassee). Florida State’s offense, led by freshman quarterback E.J. Manuel, can move the ball. But the defense just can’t stop anybody. Florida is just too strong. The Gators roll and start getting ready for Alabama. Florida 35, Florida State 14.

3. Alabama at Auburn (Friday): Twenty years ago Alabama was ranked No. 2 and headed to a possible national championship when the Crimson Tide was upset at Auburn. But that Auburn team had a great defense and was deep enough to keep from getting worn down. Alabama is on a mission to get back to the SEC championship game and beat Florida. Auburn will make it close early on emotion, but eventually Alabama will get some turnovers and put the Tigers away. Alabama 31, Auburn 10.

4. Arkansas at LSU: I don’t have the words to explain how much LSU’s Les Miles needs to win this game. The LSU fan base has turned up the heat on Miles and his staff since last week’s horrific loss to Ole Miss. Arkansas, however, is playing very, very well. Behind Ryan Mallett the Razorbacks have scored on 41 of 42 possessions (32 touchdowns, nine field goals) in the opponent’s red zone. LSU gets the edge because it is playing at home and because it has a sense of desperation. LSU 24, Arkansas 20.

5. Tennessee at Kentucky: Since freshman Morgan Newton took over at quarterback, the Wildcats (7-4) have been very difficult to stop on offense. Two weeks ago Tennessee (6-5) got drilled by Ole Miss and last week looked lethargic in beating Vanderbilt (31-16). The winner of this one is likely headed to the Outback Bowl on New Year’s Day. That should get both sides pretty excited. This week’s upset special is: Kentucky 21, Tennessee 20.

6. Ole Miss at Miss. State: Thanks to Dexter McCluster, Ole Miss is finally playing like the team projected to be so good in the preseason. The Rebels (8-3) can lock up a bid to the Capital One Bowl on New Year’s Day with an impressive win against their state rival. Ole Miss might come out a little flat after an emotional win last week against LSU. But it still has too much firepower. Ole Miss 27, Miss. State 21.

7. South Carolina at Clemson: Few teams in the country are playing as well as Clemson, which has scored 34 or more points in its last six games. Clemson’s C.J. Spiller is still in the Heisman Trophy discussion, so look for him to have a big day against a beat up South Carolina defense. Clemson 24, South Carolina 17.

8. Virginia Tech at Virginia: It’s been a strange year for Virginia Tech (8-3) but the Hokies have a chance to win 10 games against with a victory here and another in the bowl game. Virginia (3-8) will likely be playing its last game under head coach Al Groh. Virginia Tech 27, Virginia 17.

9. North Carolina at N.C. State: North Carolina has been struggling on offense for most of the season but it won’t matter against an N.C. State defense that has given up 30 or more points eight times this season. The Tar Heels finish 9-3 and may be headed to the Chick-fil-A Bowl. North Carolina 38, N.C. State 17.

10. Oklahoma State at Oklahoma: Quarterback Zac Robinson practiced this week and could be back in the lineup. A win probably puts the Cowboys (9-2) in a BCS bowl. Oklahoma State hasn’t won in Norman since 2001, when Les Miles was the head coach. Go with the Cowboys. Oklahoma State 28, Oklahoma 21.

Mr. Football, nice prediction you had. Someone forgot to tell the Dawgs! Much like Tech turned the corner after beating UGA last year, this win is setting the stage for something special next year from the Dawgs. Florida graduates everyone, Georgia has Tennessee at home. If CMR can show the emotion he showed last night moving forward watch out. Mr. Football please vote for a UGA pre-season ranking of 10-15, the Dawgs play better with a chip on their shoulder. Hate it for you Nerds, looks like seven more in a row!

Why is everyone saying Barnhart sucks at making picks? Oh right, hindsight.

It’s not like UGA was the obvious choice here. Most of the world was picking Tech to win.

Well Tony, you hit the skids this week. That was the worst forecasting I’ve ever seen. Maybe you should check out “The Original Fearless Forecaster,” who has been picking games for the past 42 years. He has the highest percentage correct of any prognosticator, (and a former AJC writer once got caught using “TOFF’s” picks for his columns.)

Paging “Mr. Football”, paging “Mr. Football”…..you have a message from a bruised, beaten, and shamed Georgia Tech team and their coach from Georgia Southern. By the way, I think Southern has an opening, doesn’t it? Someone please call Mr. Johnson and tell him that the good people of Division II football would love for him to return to his roots and level of ability.

Tony,

I’m NOT going to bag on you as so many here have, hey everyone has an off week once in a while. Keep your chin up and remember, it’s a really big check you’re getting that these so called “experts” aren’t! Your overall record is pretty darned good top to bottm so no shame in a bad week.
All you “experts” out there bagging on Tony, if you’re SO MUCH SMARTER than him and have SO MUCH MORE KNOWLEDGE of the game then by all means send a resume with a copy of your histroy of picks and knowdlege of the game to the AJC and see if they’re interested in what you have to say. ‘Till then, STHU!!!!!

Atlanta Gator;

How true about the “records & playin’ the game”; “if” GT had done this or “if” Clemson had done that etc… As I’ve said numerous times in these here posts the SEC is top to bottom the best conference, that doesn’t mean the rest aren’t closin’ the gap. The PAC 10 is getting very close, I would say, hell I don’t even need too; there was an article in the OC Register last month taken from ESPN about the PAC 10 being the best conference, yes, even better than the SEC. Now last time I checked ESPN is about as good a source for knowledge on college football as one can get. No, SECHomers, yer Uncle Zeke doesn’t count.
That being said, I have no problems givin’ the SEC its due; what the SEC has done year in and year out is pretty tough to match. My only issue with SECHomers is the fact that even when SC is on top, y’all cry “foul & cheaters etc…” but when y’all are actually CAUGHT cheatin’ then it’s “they made that cr@p up” while SC IS GUILTY even without being charged!
To get back to my point, Congrats to both the Lizards & the Elephants! You’ve both had great seasons again, good luck to both next week. I’ll enjoy watching the winner of that game LOSE to Texas in the BCS NC game!! Hook’em!!!

The AJC should replace Tony with a robot who just picks teams who won last week to win this week. The robot doesn’t actually have to watch games or evaluate matchups. He would end up making the same predictions as Tony.

This is why I love college football. You can never count out the underdog in an instate rivalry game. Georgia-GT, MSU-Ole Miss, South Carolina-Clemson, and Auburn nearly beating Bama. Great weekend of ball and did I mention the SEC swept the ACC 3-0 including 2 blowouts? Roll tide.

Atlanta Gator,

Sorry but I wasn’t able to get back to your question about the source for Charlie Weiss’s 17 million dollar buyout. I don’t remember but I think it was CBS Sports or espn magazine that I read that a couple of weeks ago.

Anyway, I was watching the post game show on ESPN and they confirmed this weekend that sources close to the program confirm that the figure is actually close to 18 million. WOW!!! You may or may not have seen that.

Since ND is a private institution the full number won’t be reported but I have seen it or heard it a few times now that its 17 or 18 million.

Also, nice succinct post on the ACC-SEC debate. I don’t want to rub it in too much on the ACC folks but the facts is the facts is the facts.

Ha Ha Ha… M how is your analysis now?????
Tony’s picks were wrong and two 6-5 SEC teams beat the division
champs from the ACC. Which league is stronger? What a joke your opinion is. 10 bowl eligable teams from the SEC and all of them with 7 wins or more. Only 7 from the ACC, an averge of 9-3 in your championship game and FSU the worst 6-6 team in the country being one of the 7. Tech wins one game a decade and we have to hear so much trash talk for a year, then Tech lays an egg and the world returns to normal.

Go Dawgs….Sic EM!

True with SC having a suck@ss year (by our standards) the conf is a bit behind the SEC but not by much. With all that FLA loses this year and the losses that BAMA & LSU will have the SEC will ahve a drop off next year. The PAC 10 teams all have most of theirs returning for another year or two. Will be very intersting as the bowl season plays out. (PAC 10 5-0 in bowls last year)

But alas, like the little blue freaks from Westwood (fUCLA) we, as UGA did last night, have to remind y’all that your once every decade “upset” is NOT a changing of the guard. Congrats on the fine season, enjoy it and the bowl to come but please; remember your place in the food chain here. WE (SC, UGA, BAMA, FLA, Texas) are at the top of said food chain, you, Clem, VaTech, fUCLA are at the bottom of said. We enjoy the meal, you ARE the meal.
