Georgia Tech rolls over Georgia

Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving. It’s Rivalry Week or, what a friend of mine likes to call “Hate Week.” No conference championships are on the line but a lot of feelings are. Some teams could lose a shot at the national championship or a BCS bid by getting beat by their rival. That makes it hurt twice as much.

If not for Georgia’s collapse against Kentucky we would have gone 10-0 last week. But for the year we are 89-31 (and yes, we don’t use the point spread) for those of you keeping score at home.

Here we go with the next to last Fearless Friday Forecast for 2009:

1. Georgia at Georgia Tech: Georgia Tech is brimming with confidence as it goes for its second straight win over the Bulldogs. Georgia, meanwhile, just doesn’t seem to have any answers after last week’s meltdown against Kentucky. Athletically, Georgia should be able to hang around but there is no evidence that the Bulldogs can handle a tough, physical football game for four quarters. That is exactly what Georgia Tech will give them. Georgia Tech 38, Georgia 21.

2. Florida State at Florida: There will be a lot of emotion on the field before this game. Tim Tebow and Florida’s ultra-successful senior class (46-6) will be playing their last home game. Florida State coach Bobby Bowden will be making his last visit to The Swamp as the Seminoles head coach (Even if he comes back next season, the 2010 game will be in Tallahassee). Florida State’s offense, led by freshman quarterback E.J. Manuel, can move the ball. But the defense just can’t stop anybody. Florida is just too strong. The Gators roll and start getting ready for Alabama. Florida 35, Florida State 14.

3. Alabama at Auburn (Friday): Twenty years ago Alabama was ranked No. 2 and headed to a possible national championship when the Crimson Tide was upset at Auburn. But that Auburn team had a great defense and was deep enough to keep from getting worn down. Alabama is on a mission to get back to the SEC championship game and beat Florida. Auburn will make it close early on emotion, but eventually Alabama will get some turnovers and put the Tigers away. Alabama 31, Auburn 10.

4. Arkansas at LSU: I don’t have the words to explain how much LSU’s Les Miles needs to win this game. The LSU fan base has turned up the heat on Miles and his staff since last week’s horrific loss to Ole Miss. Arkansas, however, is playing very, very well. Behind Ryan Mallett the Razorbacks have scored on 41 of 42 possessions (32 touchdowns, nine field goals) in the opponent’s red zone. LSU gets the edge because it is playing at home and because it has a sense of desperation. LSU 24, Arkansas 20.

5. Tennessee at Kentucky: Since freshman Morgan Newton took over at quarterback, the Wildcats (7-4) have been very difficult to stop on offense. Two weeks ago Tennessee (6-5) got drilled by Ole Miss and last week looked lethargic in beating Vanderbilt (31-16). The winner of this one is likely headed to the Outback Bowl on New Year’s Day. That should get both sides pretty excited. This week’s upset special is: Kentucky 21, Tennessee 20.

6. Ole Miss at Miss. State: Thanks to Dexter McCluster, Ole Miss is finally playing like the team projected to be so good in the preseason. The Rebels (8-3) can lock up a bid to the Capital One Bowl on New Year’s Day with an impressive win against their state rival. Ole Miss might come out a little flat after an emotional win last week against LSU. But it still has too much firepower. Ole Miss 27, Miss. State 21.

7. South Carolina at Clemson: Few teams in the country are playing as well as Clemson, which has scored 34 or more points in its last six games. Clemson’s C.J. Spiller is still in the Heisman Trophy discussion, so look for him to have a big day against a beat up South Carolina defense. Clemson 24, South Carolina 17.

8. Virginia Tech at Virginia: It’s been a strange year for Virginia Tech (8-3) but the Hokies have a chance to win 10 games against with a victory here and another in the bowl game. Virginia (3-8) will likely be playing its last game under head coach Al Groh. Virginia Tech 27, Virginia 17.

9. North Carolina at N.C. State: North Carolina has been struggling on offense for most of the season but it won’t matter against an N.C. State defense that has given up 30 or more points eight times this season. The Tar Heels finish 9-3 and may be headed to the Chick-fil-A Bowl. North Carolina 38, N.C. State 17.

10. Oklahoma State at Oklahoma: Quarterback Zac Robinson practiced this week and could be back in the lineup. A win probably puts the Cowboys (9-2) in a BCS bowl. Oklahoma State hasn’t won in Norman since 2001, when Les Miles was the head coach. Go with the Cowboys. Oklahoma State 28, Oklahoma 21.

Tony, your points are low on the Tech score – I think over 50. As a Dawg fan, I will enjoy watching 1/4 Willie coach his last game at UGA. At least, I hope so.

Stinger, you are either a crack head or not very well informed. We will beat GT in 2011 & 2013, the only problem is BAMA fans won’t get to come to BD Stadium because there are no seats! We could fill the whole stadium as a road game. Just get ready for the beat down….Just another ACC beatdown! RTR

What are you guys 0 for the 21st century in winning the SEC ?? Here’s how it works…once you’ve won something you run your mouth…After your bowl game performance last year for the love of God man..don’t jinx what could be outstanding season by acting like …well a Bama fan..I hope you squish the Bugs but really you haven’t earned the trash talk yet….

1. 38-21 sounds about right in the Tech vs. UGA game. Maybe 38-28, but that’s about as close as it’s going to get for my Dawgs.

2. Tebow’s last game in the Swamp vs. FSU’s sorry defense? 48-10 Gators!

3. I actually think the Bama vs. Auburn game might be closer than folks think. The Tigers are coming off a bye week. I’m thinking 27-17 Bama.

4. Sounds right

5. Sounds right

6. Carolina 24-21 over Clemson

8-10: Don’t care.

I am thinking Georgia is soft and Holiday football games are made for teams on a mission, Georgia has not got one. Somewhere in their souls Georgia has got to be tired of getting their rears kicked by lesser opponents, I just hope that turkey slows em down one more time and they can fix what is broke for next year. Two losses to Tech will make that happen faster, a win over Tech might be better for Tech in the long run, because Georgia will think they have arrived and they have not. Tech will only get better every year, no matter what happens here.

but for the refs this year there would BEE no sec teams in the top 5. there would be no undefeated teams in the sec. talk about the espn ‘wheel of fortune’.

we have to wonder how much espn ponied up to the refs to pull those games out for their 2 sec darlings.

wrt utah an bama…. so your saying that bama has NO heart or pride? that is a definite possibility. a good team finds ways to win when their not at their best. obviously bama is not a good team.

wrt gt vs lsu…. that was a set up game. lsu was healthy for the first time last year in the bowls. gt’s ol was so decimated by the time the bowls came around that they had a tight end playing on the line. some of the gt ol were about 250 to the lsu 300 pound behemoths. even with all that it was not lsu that beat gt last year it was gt. we gave lsu 17 points.

why is it that when an sec bottom feeder almost beats a team at the top than its because of the sec strength. when an acc team pummels that same bottom feeder its because they were an sec bottom feeder and not a good team.

make up your friggin mind would ya. all these excuses are confusing.

give me a break already.

anybody with an ounce of grey matter can tell that the sec IS what it is because of the sec infomercial called sports center.

i dont know about anybody else but i stopped watching sports center because all the yap about is the sec. 50 minutes of sec and 10 minutes of everybody else.

i guess that is what happens when a tv conglomerate pays a billion dollars for the rights to a conferences games.

Frogs…TCU beats Texas easily and plays well against either Bama or Florida, but would lose a close game. Unfortunately, TCU’s conference and therefore record does not measure up to Texas, Bama, or Florida…and they will not play for the NC if two or those three teams are undefeated. Nebraska could upset Florida and put TCU in. Might happen, but probably not. TCU should try to get into a major conference. Cinncinati has more to complain about than TCU.

Student body of Georgia Tech Undergrads+Grads: 19,413
Seating Capacity of Bobby Dodd Stadium: 55,000
Average ACTUAL Attendance for 5 home games this year: 50,819

Student body of UGA Undergrads+Grads: 34,180
Seating Capacity of Sanford Stadium: 92,746
Average ACTUAL Attendance for 6 home games this year: UNKNOWN… because they don’t list actual attendance on the UGA website only tickets sold, so every game shows its a sellout.

Granted UGA has a larger fan base, student body, and bigger stadium to accomodate same. Tech is smaller in all points, but has the better team this year, and last year as well.

You can’t tell me that “every” seat was filled at Sanford Stadium at every game this year, the televised games showed empty seats there, too. Especially towards the end of the Kentucky game and the fans were showing their @zzes on national TV, leaving before the game was over and while the Pups still had a chance to win it.

Classless, disrespectful, embarrassing, and uncalled for. Its not like the Pups had been beaten badly every game they played and deserved to be shown some dissatisfaction from the fans. It is a good team and has had moments of bad or inconsistent play. Not necessarily worthy of being disrespected in such a in-your-face way on national tv. Geez!

I will really enjoy watching the red and black bleed out of the stands in the second half Saturday night when y’all come to get your butt-whoopin down on North Ave. I still respect the team, they have the ability to win this weekend, but I have lost a lot of respect for fair-weather fans that so easily flip off their team on a national stage.

I predict that the ACC teams facing SEC competition this weekend will underestimate the quality of their opposition based upon their records in SEC conference play. Both South Carolina and Georgia look like easy pickings on paper, yet they will both present a long row to hoe on game-day. Both of these games should be well worth watching. I can’t say the same for Florida vs. FSU. — that one will be a lopsided blowout by the Gators.

Barnhart’s doing his best this week hoping to motivate his alma mater … I sure hope it doesn’t work.

This GT fan believes GA’s receivers (with or without Green) will be the best group of WRs GT’s D has faced all year. I could see GA being very successful in the passing game, which will only open things up even more for their much-improved running game. GT’s D needs to be the one that showed-up for UNC, VT, VA, and Duke. However, it’s a little scary/misleading from my perspective b/c UNC at the time was anemic on O, and VA & Duke have nowhere near the talent GA has on O. And don’t forget about has bad GT’s kickoff coverage is … and GA’s run a few back for scores this season. (GT’s will need to overcome GA’s special teams score(s) on Sat.)

GT’s d-line needs to have a good game; limit the run game, and pressure Cox into some bad decisions.

For GT on O, if Nesbitt is accurate in the passing game, and the Jackets protect the ball, it should be very difficult for GA stop Nesbitt, Thomas & Co. with any consistency.

I’m definitely not crazy enough to count the Dogs out in this game; they have too much talent. But I do see it being tough for GA to get the W if GT protects the ball, and stays healthy. I see a high-scoring game similar to 2008.

DawgGirl32

November 27th, 2009

I definitely see the Jackets winning, but I think Georgia’s going to score more than 21 points. Keep in mind Tech’s defense is worse than ours. It’s the same defense that allowed 30 points from Vandy. Now THAT’S bad. I see it more as being 45-35 or something. I still think there’s a great chance for an upset. Tech barely sqeaked by some pretty bad teams this year. Their confidence might get the best of them.
