Can Georgia handle a little praise?

Five burning questions as we head into the weekend:

1. Can Georgia handle a little bit of praise? Last week’s win over Auburn doesn’t erase all of the of the problems that Georgia has had with this football team. Those problems are still considerable. But Georgia has not won two straight conference games since it beat South Carolina and Arkansas way back in September. Can the Bulldogs, who got a little love this week, handle it and take care of business against Kentucky? Can they build on it and actually play well for two weeks in a row?

2. Can LSU get excited, or even interested, enough to win at Ole Miss? If LSU beats Ole Miss on Saturday and Arkansas on Nov. 28, the Tigers will finish 10-2 and punch their ticket to the Capital One Bowl in Orlando on New Year’s Day. But LSU is not going to a BCS game because No. 1 Florida and No. 2 Alabama are both virtual locks to be there (and one conference cannot have more than two teams in the BCS). LSU had a serious Alabama hangover last week before finally beating Louisiana Tech. Last season the Tigers stumbled at the end, losing to Ole Miss and Arkansas to finish 7-5. Ole Miss showed some life last week in totally destroying Tennessee 42-17. LSU fans won’t be happy with another lackluster finish.

3. Will Clemson take care of business against Virginia? I remember two years ago when all Clemson had to do was beat Boston College to clinch the ACC Atlantic. But the Eagles and Matt Ryan had other ideas, winning 20-17. This Clemson team appears to be different. The Tigers and C.J. Spiller have scored 38 or more points in each of their last five games. Spiller has become a human highlight reel and shows no sign of slowing down against a Virginia team (3-7) that packed it in a long time ago.

4. Why is Alabama playing Chattanooga? Why is Florida playing FIU? I understand why Alabama is playing the Division I-AA Mocs (6-4). Auburn, its next opponent, has this Saturday off and the Alabama-Auburn game is on Friday, Nov. 27, instead of Saturday. So if Alabama can’t have a week off like its state rival, then it needs to have a pretty stress-free game. Florida also has its big rivalry game on Nov. 28 against Florida State followed by the SEC championship game on Dec. 5. Remember that a few years ago the SEC changed the rules and now REQUIRES schools to play on the last Saturday in November instead of taking the week off before the SEC championship game.

5. Is Tennessee going to bounce back against Vanderbilt?  Tennessee was on a nice little roll when the Vols got on the plane last Friday and headed to Ole Miss. They had trounced Georgia. Lost a 12-10 heartbreaker to Alabama and then crushed South Carolina and Memphis. The energy around the program was high. Then three players get arrested for armed robbery and the Vols get trounced (42-17) in Oxford. Then this week the story broke that a player was cited for shoplifting earlier this month. Coach Lane Kiffin needs to get this thing out of the ditch and beat Vanderbilt and Kentucky to finish 7-5.

UGA beat an Auburn team that has played 11 straight weeks, unranked, and on the road. Every ranked team UGA has played they have lost. Who knows how they will play against Kty. After 10 games this team is still unpredictable. Why? Is it because of the coaching staff? The way the staff was hugging each other you would have thought they had accomplished something.

The Dawgs can handle a little love, but the Techies can’t….they’ve enjoyed the Dawg death watch waaaay too much. Georgia beats Kentucky, but this should be a shoot out…again.

Clempson beats the Wahoos to validate their ticket to the rematch with GIT. Frank Howard always called Virginia, “White Meat”. The enthusiastic Dabo Swinney will not allow the Tigers to lose focus when they’re so close to realizing one of their major season goals.

LSU vs. Ole Miss should be quite a ball game….as long as Ole Miss keeps Jevan Snead off of the turf. He tends to play scared if he gets hit a few times early in a game. Surely, Dexter “The Vexer” McCluster can’t have another game like he did against Tennysee…..can he? Daddy Kiffin had no answer for all of that wiggle and speed in open spaces.

Tennysee should beat Vandy…..provided that Thug U doesn’t lose too many more of their delinquents or felons-in-waiting. Lil Lane has found that college recruiting is a real crap shoot.

OSU vs. Meechigan has certainly lost some luster…..

How ’bout UConn being a “must win Game” for the Goldie Domers…..talk about losing luster. Wait until Stanford gets a hold of ‘em.

I’m an LSU alumni. But to see what they put on the field this year, with lackluster play, half assed execution, and we have beaten NOBODY GOOD YET ! Time to wake up our new AD and have some changes made. With our talent and 4-5 star athletes, we beat Louisiana Tech by 8 points ? What do they expect us to do ? Keep paying fees for a less than product ? Time to let the season tix go, stop tailgating at the stadium and do it at home and make them feel the ‘money’ factor ! Football is our money machine and we have bumbling Jarrett Lee as our QB ? Enough ! We need more coaching, more hard ass in your face chewing outs and realize we are playing way below our potential. I went to the game last week–third quarter I saw droves leave ! Droves ! Where does that come from ? We need to get current with the team and the coaches–both are letting us down !

2. again who really cares; LSU coach is really class-Les and Ole Miss is still only good when a Manning is at QB
3. who cares; Clempsum wins in a blow out – UVA is only going through the motions; this is the most pathetic group of players that I can remember
4. Who cares; this is business as usual – Its the SEC for god’s sake; their OOC schedules are full of these cream puffs

The Kentucky game will be hard fought. It won’t be easy but I think Georgia beats the mildcats when its all said and done.

LSU and Ole Miss? Right now I would have to favor Ole Miss slightly because they are at home I think and because Ole Miss seems to have picked it up in the 2nd half of the season just like they did last year. They’ve got some momentum going over in Oxford.

Bama is also playing Chatanooga because we really couldn’t find a more respectable team to play 10 games into the season. Its hard to get a decent middle tier team to take off from their regular conference schedule to play an out of conference team this late. Georgia had the same problem and had to schedule Tennessee Tech in the 8th or 9th game of the season.

UT-Vandy- UT wins handily because Vandy can’t score against a pee wee team. UT may be distracted because of the robbery arrests and the rancor surrounding Kiffin being caught in another lie. Kiffin should seriously consider a hiring a PR person to speak for him. Every time he speaks he seems to lose even more credibility if that’s possible.

consistency? the only way you are going to get consistency is for mark ray donnan to put it in his gameplan. and then, the only way that is going to happen is if the players execute.

has anyone here noticed that bobo’s play calling is just like Donnan…..
One series we run every play – until something doesn’t work, then we abandon the run and pass.
The next series we pass every play.
The only different is that Bobo is incapable of calling a drive that just moves the chains on a regular basis. Once he gets the ball outside his own twenty, he has to start throwing bombs. I’m sorry, but we dont have the vertical passing game of the Raiders of yore, or even Bartkowski to Jenkins and Jackson. I think a lot of the SEC DCs play man coverage on us to suck bobo into throwing the bomb….sure, they may give up one td…but over the course of the game, he will throw so many that it will get you several 3 and outs…

Auburn, a team with little depth, was playing their 11th consecutive game last week and Georgia had to come from behind to beat them at home. Kentucky had some key players injured for big chunks of the season (Lindley their outstanding DB, the QB Hartline) who are now back. Georgia is playing without their biggest offensive weapon A.J. Green. Kentucky has 2 playmakers in Cobb and Locke that Georgia can’t match.

I think the game is a pick ‘em. If Georgia loses it won’t be because they couldn’t handle praise or looked past Kentucky.

Kinda agree LSU is underachieving with the talents they hauled in. The QB position has been weak since Russell left, and the coaches are not doing a good job working around the weakness.

But don’t feel too bad, Georgia has hauled in the same level of talents and nobody can tell they even have any talents. That’s bad coaching, my friends.

FactuALL, the difference in the rumbling here in Athens and the non-rumbling at LSU is the fact they have won something lately, namely, a Sec West, SEC Title, and BCS Title. That usually gives you a couple of years. We on the other hand, have underachieved, beginning with the Sugar Bowl after the 05 SEC Title. Even in ‘07, we still lost to average UT and SC. Underachievers…..

Part of the problem is QB. LSU had Perriloux(sp) ready to take over for Flynn in 2008. We all know the talent he has but when he was kicked off the team in May of 2008, we had no QB without any real experience. You can’t be a championship team if you don’t have good QB play. In addition the co-defensive coordinators, which was a bad move by Miles, was another major reason for going 8-5 last year. The D is much improved though. LSU gave up 103 points to Florida and Georgia last season and in 10 games thus far in 2009 has given up 137.

I felt in the offseason that LSU was a 9-3 team and if they went 10-2 that would be a very good year and a huge improvement. LSU has struggled at times on offense this year because Jefferson was very inexperienced and we lost Herman Johnson, an All-American guard, and a great blocking fullback in Quinn Johnson. Miles made a good hire in Chavis. One thing I do give Miles credit for is in most cases he hires good coordinators (ie Crowton, Pelini). Tiger fans fuss about Shepard not playing much but from what I have seen he is limited to what he can do and is simply just not ready. I believe he will be a great player in 2010.

All of this said, LSU has enough talent to beat Ole Miss and Arkansas. If we don’t it will be a disappointing season and there will be alot of unhappy LSU fans.

1. UGA needs a big win this weekend vs. Kentucky. If they go out there and barely win 28-27, then they’ll get whipped against Tech. But if they go out there and win handily, I think they’ll give Tech all they can handle. But I’ll tell you one thing, UGA better not fall asleep vs. the Wildcats. Joker Phillips is a good OC and Rich Brooks has recruited good talent the last few years.

2. LSU better not take the Rebels lightly. Ole Miss beat them 31-13 last season, and even though have underachieved this year, they still have a LOT of talent on that team. McCluster is a beast!

3. I can’t ever figure Clemson out. But I’d like to think they can beat Virginia.

4. Alabama and Florida’s schedules are jokes. UGA needs to take note.

5. Vols should beat Vandy, but the Kentucky game could be a tough out.

Georgia has improved and will win two in a row over Kentucky, but don’t expect the pups to have three wins in a row. Especially against my Jackets.

LSU vs Ole Miss should be a good grudge fight. It depends on who’s offense show up. I think LSU wins by 3 or less.

Clemson should take care business early on Virginia but expect CJ Spiller to click for the first three quarters and then take a rest. Clemson vs South Carolina should be a old deep southern fist fight.

Alabama and FLorida rolls…….

Tenn vs Vandy. This should be easy and fun for Coach Kiffy to get his team back on the winning side; moreover the “Right side of the Law.”

And then only worry if he’s gonna be OK for the next quarter and can help the team WIN. They get drunk, party, and trash their campus. Which is a damn shame because UGA has a beautiful campus, with alot of tradition. UGA has one of the finest vet schools in the nation. Not to mention forestry, law, and many other courses. GeoffDawg

DP – We’ll have to agree to disagree, you stated that Cobb and Lock couldn’t be matched by UGA which I heartily disagree with. UGA should have the talent to match Kentucky with their second string out there. Watching defenders constantly out of position and not reading simple keys to tip you off to run/pass is a coaching problem, not a talent problem. When Georgia’s performed well this season, it’s been mostly due to great individual efforts from players, not from a decent gameplan.

Blue – If that happened anywhere besides the football field, it’d be called aggravated assault which would be on par, felony wise, with attempted armed robbery. All the players involved were being thuggish but at least the victims in Knoxville weren’t at risk for having their vision seriously damaged.

How is LSU underachieving? Their only two losses are to the #1 and #2 teams in the country. One on the road and one a very tough, physical game at home. They’ll finish 10-2 and go to a very respectable bowl game…

Bama and Florida schedules are just fine. 8 SEC games + a conference championship are enough. Florida can’t help it that FSU is in the tank and Miami won’t schedule. Last year the Gators played Miami, Hawaii, and FSU. South Florida hits the schedule next season…ask FSU how soft the Bulls are…

Clemson is playing like a team possessed… CJ Spiller would get my Heisman vote right now. GaTech is in for a fight in Tampa with the Tigers… come to think of it, Tigers and Jackets could be just the game the ACC needs to get that championship thingy going. Finally an entertaining matchup.

Bama deserves an off week before the Iron Bowl; but, UF should be getting hammered. Charleston Southern, Troy and Florida International all int he same year? Any other team would be crucified for having a schedule like that.

If UT can get enough players out of jail to field a team this week, they shouldn’t have any trouble with Vandy–a bowl team a year ago that’s winless in the SEC this year, amazing.

1. No. This Dawgs team desperately needs a rhetorically forceful coach who can rally the troops. They are just as likely to lose on or both of their remaining games, especially after defeating Auburn last week. This team has a problem, but it’s not a lack of talent.

2. If LSU can’t get excited about playing an SEC divisional rival, the Tigers need to hang it up now. They can play for and 11-2 record and a lot of pride. We will see.

3. Even money. The Cavaliers hate the Tigers. Clemson better remember that, because the Tigers have a two-decade history of choking when the ACC championship is on the line.

4. The scheduling of Alabama and Florida’s opponents for this weekend is understandable, given the SEC rule requiring a game the weekend before the SEC Championship game. Charleston Southern in the second week of the season was no understandable but for the cancellation and rescheduling of USF.

5. Tennessee needs to finish Lane Kiffin’s first season with two wins, and they should be able to do it with their remaining schedule IF the Vols play to their full ability. If not, an upset could happen. This is the SEC afterall.

Clay—-No need to apologize for scheduling Troy; they are a respectable football team. Charleston Southern and Florida International, on the other hand . . . .

Hey joe taxpayer you wrote “The way the staff was hugging each other you would have thought they had accomplished something.” I think a win over Auburn or any team is an accomplishment. GO DAWGS, BEAT KENTUCKY!!

DP – Auburn, a team with little depth, was playing their 11th consecutive game last week and Georgia had to come from behind to beat them at home. Kentucky had some key players injured for big chunks of the season (Lindley their outstanding DB, the QB Hartline) who are now back. Georgia is playing without their biggest offensive weapon A.J. Green. Kentucky has 2 playmakers in Cobb and Locke that Georgia can’t match

Don’t forget Auburn is down to 4 scholarship LBs. UGA had to come from behind to get the win when their defense was tired. I am picking UK in this one.

Ole Miss had 20 something players miss practice with the the flu. Remember it only takes a few days to drop 20 lbs but weeks to get it back. LSU has not won a convincing game all year. I am going with Ole Miss.

LSU still makes the Outback and Ole Miss to this Cotton. GT goes to the Chicken Bowl where they get UT. UGA to the Capital One.

Atlanta Gator – I don’t think CMR needs to change his rhetoric or coaching style to be successful but he does need to step up and make his staff accountable when the job isn’t getting done. It’s no coincidence that his best stretch was when Brian Van Gorder was the DC and he was personally calling the offensive plays. He needs a better and/or more experienced staff, not a louder yelling voice.

Atlanta Gator the problem is Bobo, Fab, and CWM.

UGA early in the game gets 3rd and long against UF and Auburn. What is the call? A draw.

Chris Todd at one point 9 for 9

LSU FAN,

I really don’t consider close losses to Florida #1 and Alabama #2 to be a disappointing season. They played both games really close. Unfortunately, they played the two best teams in the nation.

And, to continue Tony’s fine article….

Number 6 – Who will win the “Most Likely To Attract Thugs” title in the SEC? The Bulldawgs and the Volunteers are locked into one of the tightest competitions in years for thug recruits. The “Tennessee 3″ added a member to become the “Kiffen Quartet” this week, but the Dawgs still offer sideline gansta rap dancing while behind on the scoreboard, drving without licenses, and opportunities to sell rings on e-bay, provided the Shreveport Bowl gives rings anyone wants to buy. It’s a close one – WHAT’S A THUG TO DO??

Number 7 – Will Al Davis be desperate enough to draft Reshad Jones? Sure, Reshad has earned his nickname “Cheap-Shot” Jones, and he would be a nice fit with the Oakland Playas, but don’t forget those Rap-Sheet Bengals in Cincy might want the services of a cheap shot artist as well.

Number 8 – Pulling Against The Home Team? It’s one thing to rant and rave about firing a coach. That’s normal in lean times. But you know its bad when Dawg fans actually are depressed to see their team beat Auburn because they fear it only prolongs the agony that has become of Willie and Fabris at UGA. There’s more than a few Dawg faithful pulling for KY this Saturday, and more than a few who view the inevitable clock-cleaning adminstered by Paul Johnson’s Jackets as necessary surgery. As they say around the old medical school – sometimes you have to hack off a limb to save a body.

1) Yes they can, and the question is will they be all that they can, or will the youth and inexperience cause them to revert to undisciplined, careless play.

2) LSU, should win easily. The question is which OLE MISS team will show up. Hot and Cold is the Houston Nutt signature.

3) Clemson and Yabo Dabo Doo will take care of business. They have alot to play for and UVA is playing for the coaches job. Next UVA coach Derek Dooley.

4) Becuase they can, and becuase the media lets them get away with it.

5) The mean machine should handle Vandy without much problem.

Should be an intersting weekend to say the least, could be that the entire UGA staff is on the line, as well as that of Mich, UVA, Notre Dame, Colorado and Illinois.

Go Dogs

Tony,
If the SEC requires teams to play on the last Saturday in November, why does Vandy have a bye on the last Saturday in November this year? Not that they would be in the SECCG anyway…just wondering.

Thanks

All you SEC fans enjoy the Dogs down year. While it has been tough for us and we hope to see changes, we have the faith in CMR to do the right thing after the season. If he does not, then he will own the situation lock, stock, and barrel. Look for a different attitude from this team over the next three games and that does include a bowl game.

What is up with this Saint Simons character?

If Alabama and Florida are such great programs, why can’t they find some respectable teams to play in these OOC games?

One Less player that Lane Kiffen has to take to Michigan to play in the big house?

Can anyone remember a team with a weaker schedule than Florida’s which has stayed “#1″? No doubt Florida is strong and deserves a top 10 ranking but Charleston Southern? Florida International? Troy? Gator fans will take the rank but it is a little embarrassing for college football.

Miami Vice, you’re nuts.

In addition to their SEC schedule, Florida plays FSU every year. Although FSU has had a couple of off years, nobody looks to schedule them as a creampuff. I guarantee you there will be some hard hitting in that game, and anything could happen.

“In addition to their SEC schedule…..”. They played LSU…that’s it. Other than LSU, what’s the highest raniking SEC school the Gators played this year??????????
