Georgia Tech wraps up the division at Duke

Last week was a tough one because I believed Duke could beat North Carolina, Oklahoma could beat Nebraska, Notre Dame could beat Navy (what was I thinking there?) and Penn State could beat Ohio State.

That puts us at 73-27 for the season. We’ll try to do better this week as we get on the Fearless Friday Forecast:

1. Georgia Tech at Duke: Georgia Tech should be able to go up to Wallace Wade Stadium and take care of business and clinch the ACC Coastal. The Duke defense is banged up and I don’t see the Blue Devils stopping the Jackets at any point in this game. But the Yellow Jackets could stop themselves. If Tech lays the ball on the ground, this one could get a little scary. Georgia Tech 38, Duke 24.

2. Auburn at Georgia: Georgia gets back to basics behind running back Washaun Ealey, who looks more and more like the answer at tailback. The Bulldogs control the ball and limit the possessions of the Auburn offense. If Georgia can’t run the ball against the SEC’s No. 10 rushing defense, then the Bulldogs are in big trouble. Georgia 24, Auburn 17.

3. Alabama at Mississippi State: Mississippi State played LSU and Florida to the wire at home and should have some confidence as the nation’s No. 2 team comes to Starkville. Alabama is coming off a tough, physical game against LSU and might be a little flat.  Still, Alabama’s defense is just too good and forces Mississippi State into three or more turnovers. Alabama 28, Mississippi State 9.

4. Florida at South Carolina: Steve Spurrier says he’s going to start calling the ball plays again and so the Gamecocks might keep this close for a while. But Florida’s defense is going to light up Stephen Garcia. Don’t be surprised if the Gators get at least three interceptions. Florida wins ugly (again) and moves to 10-0. Florida 28, South Carolina 17.

5. Tennessee at Ole Miss: It’s hard to say what effect, if any, Thursday’s arrests will have on team. These things either bring a team closer together or causes it to splinter. The timing could not be worse. I think Tennessee still wins because Monte Kiffin’s defense is so good and will continue to frustrate Ole Miss quarterback Jevan Snead.  It also helps that the light has finally come on for Tennessee quarterback Jonathan Crompton. Tennessee 17, Ole Miss 14.

6. Florida State at Wake Forest: The Seminoles (4-5) will be without quarterback Christian Ponder, who suffered a separated shoulder in last week’s loss to Clemson and is out for the rest of the season. Redshirt freshman E.J. Manuel will get this first career start against the Deacons, who have beaten Florida State three straight times. Make it four.  Of Wake Forest’s six losses, five have been by three points or less. The Deacons are due to win a close game. Wake Forest 28, Florida State 27.

7. Utah at TCU: TCU (9-0) is ranked No. 4 in the BCS and needs to keep winning to stay in the national championship discussion. TCU has a veteran quarterback in Andy Dalton, who has led the Horned Frogs to over 500 yards in their last two games. Utah will start a true freshman quarterback in Jordan Wynn. TCU has the nation’s No. 3 defense. The numbers don’t add up for Utah. TCU 24, Utah 14.

8. Iowa at Ohio State: Iowa quarterback Ricky Stanzi was lost for the season in last week’s 17-10 loss to Northwestern. So freshman James Vandenberg will get his first career start before 105,000 at Ohio State’s famed Horseshoe. Win the game and Iowa goes to the Rose Bowl. Ohio State (8-2) must beat Iowa and Michigan to go to Pasadena. Iowa is very good on defense but I have go with the Buckeyes. Ohio State 17, Iowa 13.

9. Notre Dame at Pittsburgh: Notre Dame lost to Navy last week for the second time in three years. Charlie Weis says it’s not about him, it’s about Pittsburgh. Actually, Charlie, it’s all about you at this point. Notre Dame falls to 6-4 and speculation begins. Yes, Urban Meyer, that will include you. Pittsburgh 31, Notre Dame 21.

10. Stanford at Southern California: Stanford RB Toby Gerhart just plowed through Oregon last week for a school record 223 yards and three touchdowns. Remember that this is the USC defense that gave up 394 yards rushing to Oregon on Oct. 31. It is tempting to pick Stanford but USC knows it has to keep winning to keep its hopes alive for a BCS bowl. Southern California 28, Stanford 21.

Fluke game Anonymous. You scored most of those against our backup 2nd string.

We beat Vandy by the same margin as you on the road. You narrowly beat Miss St. Even yech beat them by more than you.

Then you have the Ark game where the refs handed you a win. You’ve hardly looked #1. In fact, TCU would beat you guys. Keep loading the schedule up with pansies and let the refs keep you in games you should lose.

Next year you will lose 6 games when Timmy and your defense goes. And Crier leaves for his dream job in S bend.

Trade school junkie,

I haven’t seen the article on ND but I do know one thing. A big no no in coaching and especially so in coaching college football is that you never ever call out your players by name. Its considered low down, desperate, and just a crappy thing to do. But whadda ya expect from Mr. arrogant know it all fat boy Charlie Weis a guy who never played college football himself. He’s done at the end of this year, especially if the imminent buttkicking by 8-1 Pitt happens this year.

4) Offense consists of 1 guy
5) Lost 4 games and should have only won the last one against that tecnical high school in Tennessee
6) First day of game planning is what color to wear
7) Has good punter because he gets so much game time.
8) Sucks

Why are UGAg fans so boastful?

As good as B-back Jonathan Dwyer has been, and he’s been pretty darned impressive lately, this guy — quarterback Josh Nesbitt — might stand in Dwyer’s way in a bid to repeat as ACC Player of the Year. What a great problem for Tech fans to have, huh?

Official Sports Report: November 13, 2009
A Form of Friendly Fire
Dwyer’s bid to repeat as POY has hurdle: Nesbitt
by Matt Winkeljohn, OSR Managing Editor

ATLANTA – Jonathan Dwyer was named a Doak Walker Award semifinalist Thursday, and with quite a bit of football left to be played it is quite conceivable that the junior could win the award for top running back in the nation.

Yet he might not end up MVP of his own team, or even the Georgia Tech offense. That award could go to quarterback Josh Nesbitt.

And you wonder how the Yellow Jackets got to be 9-1, ranked No. 7 in the BCS standings?

Players, players, and players (most key members of the team coming from the 2007 recruiting class). Oh, and an attitude to go along with a distinct offensive personality.

When Dwyer rushed for just 7 yards on five carries in a 33-17 loss at Miami, it was his second sub-par game in as many weeks for the 2008 ACC Player of the Year.

Regardless of the fact that he suffered a shoulder injury, it was not difficult to find pundits who believed that his overall numbers were down in large measure because opponents were doing a better job defending Tech.

Through three games, Dwyer was averaging 56 yards per game.

Some folks didn’t bother looking at the fact he was averaging just 10 carries, let alone consider the injury.

The “Blue printers,” who may be akin to the “Birthers,” out there, were convinced the grid was set against the Jackets; the template was in place, the offense cased.

But Nesbitt and Dwyer have proven otherwise.

The more damage Nesbitt does (he has rushed for 604 yards and a whopping 14 touchdowns in the Jackets’ seven-game winning streak), the more space Dwyer finds in turn as defenses have to guess which player to set keys upon.

Dwyer has rushed for career-high yardage in back-to-back games, going for 189 last Saturday against Wake Forest, and 186 in a win at Vanderbilt before that. In the past three games, he’s rushed for 500 yards and four touchdowns. He now has 1,093 rushing yards for the season, 11th-most in Tech history.

Yeah, defenses have figured out Dwyer and the Jackets.

With two more touchdowns (he has 31 in his career); Dwyer will tie Joe Burns for second-most in Tech history. Burns scored 34 between 1998-’01.
Robert Lavette scored 46 between ‘81-’84.

Dwyer’s 2,924 career rushing yards are sixth-most in history, and he’s just a junior.

Never mind the internet chatter about him or other junior Jackets possibly turning pro next spring; we’ll get to that another day.

Imagine what he’s doing, 1,093 yards, nine touchdowns, and he’s still perhaps well behind his own teammate in the race of ACC Player of the Year.

Nesbitt’s 817 rushing yards are the most every by a Tech quarterback. His 1,849 career rushing yards are most ever by a Jacket signal caller. He’s a junior, too, and didn’t play much as a freshman.

Quarterbacks get the most attention, as recent Heisman Trophy results clearly indicate, and even though Nesbitt has some pedestrian passing numbers in terms of yardage (1,223) and touchdowns (six), and he’s completed a very modest 45.2 percent of his passes.

One of his predecessors, Reggie Ball, caught untold grief for completions percentages like that even though he was noted more for running the ball, too.

One of the key differences between Nesbitt and Ball, though, not to mention Dwyer, is the prevalence of signature plays.

Nesbitt not only converted the do-or-die fourth down in overtime last Saturday, but scored the game winner after that. Against Florida State, he not only stripped an FSU defender after a turnover to steal the ball back for the Jackets, but moments later scored the clinching touchdown (one of three on the day).

He already has nearly 400 more career rushing yards than Ball had, and his 22 rushing touchdowns are twice Ball’s career total and easily a school record for quarterbacks.

Nesbitt has accounted for 12 touchdowns this season (15 rushing, six passing), and even though Dwyer has averaged 19.9 carries in the seven-game winning streak, Nesbitt’s been the workhorse.

He’s had games of 32, 22, 27, 23, 21, 16 and 21 carries in the winning streak.

His yards-per-completion (23.5) is almost unheard of 10 games into a season, and his per-attempt average (10.6) would cause most NFL coordinators to salivate.

And you wonder why the Jackets are 9-1, and ranked No. 7? Well, you probably don’t, but you may know someone who does. Tell ‘em.

Matt

Tide Rising : Each case must be determined on it’s own merits. The Alabama incident you referenced may have been cut and dried due to witness accounts, etc. I don’t know all those details because I didn’t study them the same way most people aren’t studying the Tennessee details. Haven’t read about witnessess in Knoxville, only victims and idiots and when that’s what you have to go on, it takes a little more time to gather up the facts. Personally, I feel 99.99% sure Richardson and Edwards will be gone. If Jackson gets a Last Chance from Kiffin, it’ll be based on the actions each individual had in the incident. Even if his story is truthful and plays out he was a victim of circumstances, I feel Kiffin should consider suspending him for the rest of the year, plus he’ll have a lot to apologize for.

For CLK not to rush a judgement that’s sure to come isn’t an indictment on his discipline measures and shouldn’t cause anyone to lose sleep, except the trio involved. He won’t sacrifice the program for a couple of wayward players. Did you see my UTUBE link on pg 1…? Har-de-Har…

And call me when you have 12 LEGITIMATE NC’s.

1925 National Championship- Alabama claims they share this one with Dartmouth. Who awarded the NC? Houlgate and Helms. Houlgate started his system in 1927. So Bama won their 1925 NC using a formula that didn’t exist until 1927? Helms Athletic Foundation started in 1941. Another incredible retroactive NC.
The Associated Press Poll has been active since 1936. The AP took their final poll prior to bowl games from 1936 – 1964 and in 1966 and 1967. They took their final poll after the bowl games in 1965 and from 1968 – Current.
1926 National Championship- Alabama claims they share this one with 3 other teams with equal or better records! Once again it is the Helms Athletic Foundation in 1941 that awards it!
1930 National Championship- The Davis poll says that Bama tied Notre Dame for NC this year. This was the only one to award it to Bama. Notre Dame was named NC in 6 polls! Parke Davis is another retroactive system! He (an individual, not an organization) did his in 1933!
1934 National Championship- Alabama says they share this with two other teams. The awarders are Dunkel, Williamson, and Football Thesaurus. Dunkel was an individual who came up with his own system. Williamson was a geologist who came up with his own system. Football Thesaurus first appeared in 1946!
1941 National Championship- This is a complete joke. The AP ranked Alabama 20th in the nation with 14 teams with better records in the top 20. Once again it is the Football Thesaurus that retroactively awards it. Alabama finished 3rd in the SEC that year. Mississippi State won the SEC title..yet Bama claims a National title!
1961 National Championship- Finally a legitimate NC. .
1964 National Championship- While the AP did award the NC to Bama (10-1-0), Arkansas had the better record, 11-0. Alabama played Texas in their bowl and LOST. The AP final poll was before the bowl.
1965 National Championship- The AP gave this to Bama. That year there were three teams with better records than Bama. Bama 9-1-1, Michigan St 10-1-0, Arkansas 10-1-0, Nebraska 10-1-0.
1973 National Championship- AP puts Bama 4th after their bowl game loss. Bama claims a NC from the UPI poll that was taken before they met Notre Dame in the bowl game and lost. There were 3 teams with better records than Bama that year. The embarrassment of naming Alabama number one caused the UPI to name champions after bowl games. Yet Bammer has no shame in claiming it of course.
1978 National Championship- AP gives this to Alabama(11-1-0) even though USC (12-1-0) had the better record Guess who Alabama lost to that year? USC!!!!!!!!!. UPI gave the NC to USC.
1979 National Championship- Their second legitimate NC. Their first Unanimous NC.
1992 National Championship- Their third legitimate NC. Their second Unanimous NC.
You can see why people ridicule Bama fans when they talk about 12 NCs. The early ones were awarded by individuals years after the games were played. These weren’t consensus polls but NCs awarded by people that had their own formula for determining champions. Some NCs were given before bowl games that Bama lost. Using Alabama logic, Auburn could claim four national championships. But when Bammers brag they like to say they have twelve and Auburn has one. How silly. The NCAA recognizes 6 NCs for Bama and there are only two NCs that Bama has unanimously.

And yes, this is a cut and paste moron. Brought out every time a mullet head wants to brag on their 12 NC’s.
