Projecting the BCS bowls

We’re getting down to crunch time, so let’s a take minute to project the five BCS bowls and explain why the matchups will occur.

Just remember that the two bowls that lose their designated conference champs to the BCS title game go to the head of the line when it comes time to pick. The bowl that loses the No. 1 team picks first. The bowl that loses the No. 2 team picks second.

Then remaining conference champs are placed in their designated bowls: Big Ten/Pac-10 to Rose; Big 12 to Fiesta, SEC to Sugar, ACC to Orange.

Then the remaining slots in the games are filled with this order of selection: Orange, Fiesta, Sugar.

So here we go. If you disagree, please tell me why,.

BCS CHAMPIONSHIP, Jan. 7, 2010

Matchup: Alabama vs. Texas

How it happened: Florida and Alabama are locked into the SEC championship game on Dec. 5. They could be ranked 1-2. As was the case a year ago, the winner goes to the big game.  With Baylor, Kansas and Texas A&M left, Texas should cruise to the Big 12 championship game and roll over the North Division champ.

ORANGE BOWL, Jan. 5, 2010

Matchup: Georgia Tech vs. Iowa

How it happened: Georgia Tech beats Duke on Saturday to clinch the ACC Coastal championship and then wins a rematch with Clemson in the ACC title game. After the automatic slots are filled in the BCS, the Orange Bowl will get the first pick. It will take Iowa at 10-2 because those Hawkeyes love to travel South in the winter.

FIESTA BOWL, Jan. 4, 2010

Matchup: USC vs. TCU

How it happened: Because it lost Big 12 champ Texas, the No. 2 team, to the national championship game, the Fiesta gets its pick of teams after the Sugar. Since there is no suitable replacement from the Big 12, the Fiesta takes USC, which will be 10-2 and ranked in the Top 10 if it wins its final three games with Stanford, UCLA, and Arizona. After the Orange takes Iowa, the Fiesta’s choices will be down to Cincinnati, TCU, Boise State or another two-loss conference runner-up. It will take TCU, which could be ranked as high as No. 3.

SUGAR BOWL, Jan. 1, 2010

Matchup: Florida vs. Cincinnati

How it happened: Because the Sugar’s designated champion (SEC) was ranked No. 1, the Sugar gets first pick among all the bowls after the BCS title game. The Sugar fills with Florida, the SEC runner-up. The Sugar will then pick last in the second rotation and will be left with Cincinnati, which gets an automatic bid as the Big East champ.

ROSE BOWL, Jan. 1, 2010

Matchup: Ohio State vs. Oregon

How it happened: Ohio State (8-2) beats Iowa this week and Michigan next week to win the Big Ten championship. Oregon (7-2), which has only one loss in the Pac-10, recovers from its loss to Stanford and beats Arizona State, Arizona, and Oregon State to win the conference.

Rick, USCw is overrated. They’re almost guaranteed to get “upset” by 1 or 2 middle of the road PAC-10 teams each year and yet somehow still come out smelling like “Roses.”

Billy Ray – I want to talk football. I just want to clear the clutter off this board. You are correct. Tech is 9 and 1 – that should be the focus. They are a strong offensive team, regardless of how they do it. Clemson played them well and could beat them if they both get there in December. I like Johnson’s chances vs. Dabo because he has been proving that he can make adjustments. I do not resort to gloating – if Tech wins vs UGA it will just give me some peace and quiet and pride, that’s about it.

St simons does not represent the fans nor do some of the other fans that lash out without basis.

Thank you Burdell for the appreciation of the screen name. Kids today often don’t know who Billy Ray Valentine is. Just trying to bring a little culture and humor to a board.

No one denys that what Tech is doing is good for the program. Before Paul Johnson got there, Tech wasn’t a blip on the radar, if they beat you, it was considered an upset. Now Paul Johnson has gained some national attention, just like Richt did when he took over in Athens 9 years ago.

Do any of you guys think Paul Johnson might make a short stay in Atlanta and try to take his offense to a bigger school, in a bigger conference (no disrespect to the ACC) or do you honestly feel (not just hope) that he will stay for a while?

If the Big 12 ever called, or the SEC or the Big 10?

Ticket sales are what count. There were 60k sold last year. About half showed up. Why? Because it’s vt and bc and they are not anywhere close to tampa. Plus, BC is known for not travelling well. It’s a small private school like wake.

When you get teams that have never been like clemson and a top 8 team in GT, the game will sell out. The reason the acc has done poorly is the teams that were in it and their record. Things are changing this year as you have more acc teams in the top 24.

Wait til the sec has a down year and no teams playing for the Nat champ. It won;t sell out either.

__________________________________________________________

Tony – How could the Fiesta take a two-loss conference runner-up? Wouldn’t Cincy and the higher ranked of TCU/Boise St both be Automatic Qualifiers, therefore the Fiesta must take one of the two? You have the Fiesta taking TCU, so it doesn’t change your pick, but it does change your logic.

Billy Ray – he might leave – he relishes new challenges. I think when he came to Tech he believed his system could work at a more competitive level vs. Navy and he is proving it can. While I hope he does not leave, I am not naive – if he continues to perform well, then it might be that the moves on to another job and Tech will have been better by having him. Beef jerky time.

Never said they weren’t overrated. I said they have a fan base all over the country just like the steelers. I saw 2 cars this past weekend with usc crap on them and I live in forsyth cty. Whenever I go out to watch games, I usually see someone with some usc clothing on.

Gt does have dorks that don’t follow the team. So does Uga. The difference is you have 34k undergrad. Gt has around 12k. Most of the uga students are from atl or n ga. Many of the tech students are from all over. So when they graduate, they leave atlanta. Then you have the chan era. I know two older generation fans who are going to get season tix next year. 80% of this state is pro georgia. So of coruse you’re going to have more fans, sell out your games. Do you like it when phillies and mets fans rag on the braves about their attendance? You’re doing the same thing to us, but we have a valid reason behind it. Next year every game will be a sellout. I guarantee you that.

Nice one huh?

Burdell, I understand that Simons and Fuzz don’t represent the Tech nation, just like when UGA was rolling into the Sugar Bowl a couple of years ago, the loud bandwagons dawgs shouldn’t represent UGA.
Paul Johnson does make adjustments well, however, after a team has played you they know which of their schemes work and which ones didn’t. They are able to adjust as well. And Dabo will have an entire seasons worth of film to review. Somebody check Dabo’s phone bill, I bet he will even make a call down to Miami to Randy Shannon and ask how they stopped the option offense.

Agree that Dabo will have a whole year’s worth of film but you will still need to execute. I know that no matter what Tech does watching film, Spiller is still going to bust one or two long plays, as might Ford. These are two good teams with good athletes. Dwyer and Spiller are NFL bound, and Clemson has great talent on the d-line with their ends and #7 is a beast at linebacker. My point about adjustments was in game – not in films. I watched Bud Foster throttle the offense in the first half and Johnson spread things out in the 2nd half against a pretty solidly coached D at VT. He’s done it the same way against every team Tech has faced, with the Miami game providing egg on the face – that was all Miami – they played superior football that night. It will be a good ball game – I would just trust Johnson vs. Swinney, that’s all.

ok, since there are a few UGA guys on here, and we all know the dawg nation wants a new D-coord, and some have suggested even a new O-coord.

Who do you think they would go after? any quality D coaches at smaller schools that are ready to take over at UGA?

could they possibly get alums Will Muschamp or Kirby Smart to leave top 5 programs to come back home and coach for their dawgs?

dcp, you are right. planning is one thing. execution of the plan is where it matters.

I think for the first time in a recent years, if Clemson and Tech are in the ACC championship, it will be a good game to watch. Rematch of earlier in the year when Tech needed a late field goal to win, both teams are playing their best football right now, for Tech a chance at a BSC bowl game would be on the line. It could be a great game.

only if evans shells out huge dollars will smart come back to uga. and I mean huge Mark Richt dollars. we don’t have a chance with Muschamp, he’s the coach in waiting. I think we have a chance with Kirby because he’s probably tired of being in Saban’s shadow. I mean the guy gets no credit for his defense, it all projects onto Saban.

However, if I were to bet on it, I would say there will just be some shuffling with our current coaches and maybe bring in some different assistants. I would bet on Rodney G. to be def. coordinator next year. WE just simply can’t afford to lose his recruiting abilities. He’s been one of the best living room guys for years now, and recruits, grandma’s, momma’s, etc… flat out love him.

Billy Ray Valentine

I’ve heard some UGA fans say they want to go after Muschamp. I laugh every time I hear it. He’s not leaving Austin for Athens. He’s D-coord at a top 3 school in the nation. He’s head coach in waiting behind Mack Brown.

It would take a miracle and mama callin’ to get him out of Athens.

ok fine, Lyons, who do you think will end up in the Fiesta Bowl?
Will they take a 10-2 USC (the nations darling) and will they give a 12-0 Boise State a chance at a real team like USC?

If Boise gets the shaft, and wins in the Capitol One Bowl, will we spend all winter and spring about how they deserve a shot at the national champoinship.

Can you get to the national championship by beating 1 good team and then playing an 11 game cupcake-filled schedule?

You are correct about USC – great program in a major metropolitan area – lots of fans for FB.
You forget one thing – there is no NFL team in LA. Most schools in cities with an NFL team have had difficulty competing for fans.
Miami, BC, Pitt, Northwestern,

Having said that, at least you get good coverage of college FB in ATL. Here in Raleigh there seems to be only one game in town and it sure isn’t football

Billy Ray- The Miami game was moe of a display of poor defense than anything else. We got behind erly and were forced to play catch up, meaning we were forced to throw the ball far more than we intended, whic everyone knows is not our game. Also, Dwyer was banged up because we were forced to play 3 gams in 12 days. He only had 5 carries, and was a complete non-factor. As of late, the offense has been firing on all cylinders, and Dwyer has had over 180 yards in each of the past two games. Now I’m not saying anything is a given, because it’s not, but stopping this offense is much easier said than done. Much more complicated than a simple phone call to Randy Shannon.

By the way, in case you forgot, yes Clemson did beat Miami, and yes they did beat WF more convincingly than we did, but, wait, oh yeah.. We’ve already beat Clemson.

Oregon is fading fast to make the Rose Bowl. There are other contenders such as Oregon State, Arizona, Stanford, The PAC 10 is loaded with some great teams that happen to be in the same league. By the way, if Texas, Alabama and Florida were in the PAC 10, they probably would not be ranked where they are.

I was under the impression that only one small school team could make it to a bcs game. Maybe I am wrong. So if TCU goes, can Boise? Not sure.

Wreck1378, I understand that defense is more than a phone call to Randy Shannon, but you have to imagine that since Randy’s D was able to hold the run and his offense was able to light up the board, that Dabo might want to pick his brain and see what worked, what they looked for on both sides of the ball. A phone call to Del Boca Vista doesn’t give Dabo an edge, it just gives him information from a man who stopped the option one night.

bdawg – very true, USC does seem to be a favorite of Bristol, Conn. and all the boys at ESPN, and why they are still where they are after losing to Washington (0-12 last year) and getting beat by Oregon, i dont know. Maybe P. Carroll has some nudie photos of Lee Corso and Kirk Herbstreit doing something funny with a mascot head after College Gameday one saturday??

And yes Tech did beat clemson, but if memory serves (i’m old) I think it was a field goal with 1:02 left in the game. Wouldn’t really call that a mud hole stomped in anybody’s ace.

GT was up 24-0 in the game. Clemson made a valiant come back. But they have their own issues too. If we don’t let up in that game and play passive, we win it easily. And enough with people saying GT got a call. So did clemson at the end. And les tried the same fake field goal against uga. Didn’t work for him though.
