Projecting the BCS bowls

We’re getting down to crunch time, so let’s a take minute to project the five BCS bowls and explain why the matchups will occur.

Just remember that the two bowls that lose their designated conference champs to the BCS title game go to the head of the line when it comes time to pick. The bowl that loses the No. 1 team picks first. The bowl that loses the No. 2 team picks second.

Then remaining conference champs are placed in their designated bowls: Big Ten/Pac-10 to Rose; Big 12 to Fiesta, SEC to Sugar, ACC to Orange.

Then the remaining slots in the games are filled with this order of selection: Orange, Fiesta, Sugar.

So here we go. If you disagree, please tell me why,.

BCS CHAMPIONSHIP, Jan. 7, 2010

Matchup: Alabama vs. Texas

How it happened: Florida and Alabama are locked into the SEC championship game on Dec. 5. They could be ranked 1-2. As was the case a year ago, the winner goes to the big game.  With Baylor, Kansas and Texas A&M left, Texas should cruise to the Big 12 championship game and roll over the North Division champ.

ORANGE BOWL, Jan. 5, 2010

Matchup: Georgia Tech vs. Iowa

How it happened: Georgia Tech beats Duke on Saturday to clinch the ACC Coastal championship and then wins a rematch with Clemson in the ACC title game. After the automatic slots are filled in the BCS, the Orange Bowl will get the first pick. It will take Iowa at 10-2 because those Hawkeyes love to travel South in the winter.

FIESTA BOWL, Jan. 4, 2010

Matchup: USC vs. TCU

How it happened: Because it lost Big 12 champ Texas, the No. 2 team, to the national championship game, the Fiesta gets its pick of teams after the Sugar. Since there is no suitable replacement from the Big 12, the Fiesta takes USC, which will be 10-2 and ranked in the Top 10 if it wins its final three games with Stanford, UCLA, and Arizona. After the Orange takes Iowa, the Fiesta’s choices will be down to Cincinnati, TCU, Boise State or another two-loss conference runner-up. It will take TCU, which could be ranked as high as No. 3.

SUGAR BOWL, Jan. 1, 2010

Matchup: Florida vs. Cincinnati

How it happened: Because the Sugar’s designated champion (SEC) was ranked No. 1, the Sugar gets first pick among all the bowls after the BCS title game. The Sugar fills with Florida, the SEC runner-up. The Sugar will then pick last in the second rotation and will be left with Cincinnati, which gets an automatic bid as the Big East champ.

ROSE BOWL, Jan. 1, 2010

Matchup: Ohio State vs. Oregon

How it happened: Ohio State (8-2) beats Iowa this week and Michigan next week to win the Big Ten championship. Oregon (7-2), which has only one loss in the Pac-10, recovers from its loss to Stanford and beats Arizona State, Arizona, and Oregon State to win the conference.

HBTD-

Yeah switch out Vandy with Clemson and the SEC’s average IQ/starting salary/SAT scores etc. would plummet!!!

They are all you have when it comes to academics. The only non-cow town in the conference…and don’t even mention Knoxville.

One win over Tennessee Tech and all the UGA fans suddenly think their defense can tackle!

You can’t stop Nesbitt, Dwyer, Allen, Jones, Thomas, Hill…the list just goes on.

Whose got the pitch man?!?!?!

?? Why all this talk about Clemson? They are currently tied with Boston College with 5 conference games left amongst them. A lot can happen. BC could be in the ACC championship game. If Clemson is, we will win again – even moreso this time as Johnson was not happy how we let them back into the 1st game. All in all, all we care about is Saturday and beating Duke and becomind 10-1! Wow . . . . now that sounds great.

glad that BAMA is back hated!

I can guarantee you that the Orange Bowl representatives will be pulling for Clemson. They’ll bring 50,000 people to Miami. With Tech, they might get 1,500 if lucky. You know,”tech has a small base of fans.” LOL!!

Tech is a small school stuck in a major metropolitan area…we have attendance issues…same as other schools in our situation. I’m a season ticket holder. I’ll be in Tampa if we make it. Probably can’t swing the Orange Bowl because it’s on a Tuesday after the holidays and I have a real job…where I am needed.

Most the big schools/stadium/fanbases are located in college towns. There is nothing else going on and the student sections are huge. Most of the students go to the games because there isn’t much else to do…this keeps the fan supply replenished.

It’s just the way it is. But I can tell you one thing…Paul Johnson has the fan base VERY excited. Our home attendance problems will hopefully be fading. Now how well we travel is a whole other beast.

GO JACKETS!!! BEAT DUKE!! WIN THE COASTAL!!!

HBTD – really – 1,500 fans is all Tech would bring to an Orange Bowl. You are a complete moron. Everyone agrees that Tech’s fan base is smaller, but if they get to the Orange Bowl, I can guarantee no tickets will be mailed back. Enough about the free cokes and hot dogs – it’s a bit old. If you want to talk football, please do. 9 and 1 is the record. Clemson is a good team – I won’t argue, but Tech is as well – you cannot deny that or the fact that they are #7 (I guess all the coaches and writers that vote did not check with you first). Great insight.

We live in a major metropolitan city. That is why we can’t win consistently. Also, the smog in the city makes it difficult for us to practice. People make band movies out of our school because we are so rich in football history. We don’t travel well because we live virtually 80% of our lives. (if we could only figure out how to virtually sleep).

DCP. You’re the one mentioning “free cokes and hot dogs”. Dang you guys are a defensive lot. I based my 1,500 estimate on the last ACC CG you guys attended. There were probably 3,000 at that game, but it was in Jacksonville, i.e. a little closer to home.

I’ve already explained to all of you, we don’t go to games, we go to them virtually. My good friend Sung has devised a devise for us to virtually go to the games. Then we can change reality and pretend we’re a really good program, playing in a good conference and there are girls in our stands.

If teams like Georgia Tech and Cincinnati are in “major” bowls– they can’t be much. Nothing like 3 “mid-majors” in big bowls. Playing a weak schedule in a dipwad conference (like the Big East and ACC) is the ticket to a supposed big bowl.

Billy Ray (great screen name by the way!),

USC was the only one I could come up with too. Tech has attendance issues…no argument here. And you are right about the students not being that into football. In fact…some of them were probably picked on by the jocks in HS and resent football entirely. But you don’t hear many Tech folks complaining about attendance…it’s just one of the few things that others use to try and knock our program. We have the tradition, the conference titles, the MNCs and you sure can’t knock the team’s results since CPJ has arrived!

DCP, you think the free cokes and hot dog jokes are old, what about all your boys “yellow fuzz” and “saint simons” who just repeat the score of last years game, and call a 3 point win a ace whoopin’

I repeat the same question back to you, if you want to talk football, please do. not how many people attended last years ACC championship.
yes your record is 9-1, clemson is good, it took a last second field goal to beat them earlier this year, and it’s always tough to beat a team twice in one year.
UGA is 5-4, could easily be 3-6, if AJ Green doesn’t block an ASU field goal, and if Stephen Garcia completes the pass into the endzone.

Tech has a qwerky (notice I didn’t say ‘high school’) offense. It is difficult to prepare for, nobody else runs it, and it’s tough to simulate with a scout team.

If Tech does if fact beat UGA this year, are you going to be gracious in victory, or will you sink down with your boys “fuzz and saint” and talk about how 7 in a row didn’t matter, the new streak is upon us?

If the SEC officials are allowed to continue with their not-hidden agenda, they will figure out some way for Florida and Alabama to play in the national championship game. Also, at the end of that game, after FL is victorious, Coach Meyer will actually kiss Tim Tebow flush on the lips on national TV. Then they will be married later, after Urban divorces his wife, and they will live happily ever after on one of the Samoan Islands.
