Projecting the BCS bowls

We’re getting down to crunch time, so let’s a take minute to project the five BCS bowls and explain why the matchups will occur.

Just remember that the two bowls that lose their designated conference champs to the BCS title game go to the head of the line when it comes time to pick. The bowl that loses the No. 1 team picks first. The bowl that loses the No. 2 team picks second.

Then remaining conference champs are placed in their designated bowls: Big Ten/Pac-10 to Rose; Big 12 to Fiesta, SEC to Sugar, ACC to Orange.

Then the remaining slots in the games are filled with this order of selection: Orange, Fiesta, Sugar.

So here we go. If you disagree, please tell me why,.

BCS CHAMPIONSHIP, Jan. 7, 2010

Matchup: Alabama vs. Texas

How it happened: Florida and Alabama are locked into the SEC championship game on Dec. 5. They could be ranked 1-2. As was the case a year ago, the winner goes to the big game.  With Baylor, Kansas and Texas A&M left, Texas should cruise to the Big 12 championship game and roll over the North Division champ.

ORANGE BOWL, Jan. 5, 2010

Matchup: Georgia Tech vs. Iowa

How it happened: Georgia Tech beats Duke on Saturday to clinch the ACC Coastal championship and then wins a rematch with Clemson in the ACC title game. After the automatic slots are filled in the BCS, the Orange Bowl will get the first pick. It will take Iowa at 10-2 because those Hawkeyes love to travel South in the winter.

FIESTA BOWL, Jan. 4, 2010

Matchup: USC vs. TCU

How it happened: Because it lost Big 12 champ Texas, the No. 2 team, to the national championship game, the Fiesta gets its pick of teams after the Sugar. Since there is no suitable replacement from the Big 12, the Fiesta takes USC, which will be 10-2 and ranked in the Top 10 if it wins its final three games with Stanford, UCLA, and Arizona. After the Orange takes Iowa, the Fiesta’s choices will be down to Cincinnati, TCU, Boise State or another two-loss conference runner-up. It will take TCU, which could be ranked as high as No. 3.

SUGAR BOWL, Jan. 1, 2010

Matchup: Florida vs. Cincinnati

How it happened: Because the Sugar’s designated champion (SEC) was ranked No. 1, the Sugar gets first pick among all the bowls after the BCS title game. The Sugar fills with Florida, the SEC runner-up. The Sugar will then pick last in the second rotation and will be left with Cincinnati, which gets an automatic bid as the Big East champ.

ROSE BOWL, Jan. 1, 2010

Matchup: Ohio State vs. Oregon

How it happened: Ohio State (8-2) beats Iowa this week and Michigan next week to win the Big Ten championship. Oregon (7-2), which has only one loss in the Pac-10, recovers from its loss to Stanford and beats Arizona State, Arizona, and Oregon State to win the conference.

GTman has the picks right IMO. Florida beats Bama this year too. You have to go with Florida’s offense (Tebow) over McElroy at this point. That’s the only difference because both D’s are killer. Then Texas over Florida in the title game.

Lot of things will be settled this weekend.

If TCU beats Utah, then they’ll be in the mix for the #2 or #3 spot. (probably #3 don’t see them jumping Texas)

UF vs Bama… winner will be #1, loser will be #4 in BCS.

So UF or Bama in BCS Title game (I lean towards UF here) and loser to Sugar (Bama?)

So we are looking at UF vs Texas (yeah I don’t see Texas losing either) in the BCS title game.

Then the Orange… (best bets are either GT or Clemson right now) so the ACC champ vs TCU. (I don’t think the Orange passes up on an undefeated TCU) but that sucks for the horned frogs because I doubt they’ll be playing a top 5 team.

Tech got the Cheetah Lounge to start that free admission with a sports ticket stub, but all it did was get a lot of the Tech women to go to the Cheetah.

I agree FLA will beat Bama, unless Bama’s QB starts to play a lot better.

Tony,

If Boise St. can win out (which they should) why would they be overlooked by the Fiesta Bowl to potentially face USC (the media’s other darling school)

Boise has brought magic to Tempe before with their huge David vs. Goliath match up with Oklahoma. And it would give them a chance to put up against a national powerhouse program.

If Boise gets left out of the BCS, all we’re going to hear is how they were 13-0 and deserve a shot at the title, just like we heard with Utah last year.

Didn’t find much with which to argue in Tony’s BCS bowl predictions. Of course I hope that Florida will beat Alabama in the SEC Championship Game and play Texas for the BCS title, but Alabama is a very credible choice to win it all.

We shall see.

Lets see…Fla & Ala defenses are both good and cancel one another out. Fla has Tebow and Ala has McElroy which means the difference make is Tebow. Yes, Ingram is a good RB and the trio of Demps, Rainey and Moody are pretty good also. McElroy will fold and Tebow won’t. Place your bets on the Gators. End of story.

You can’t count the chickens before they hatch! Dang, you can’t count anything before the eggs are laid! All of this is pure guesswork, and means nothing.

Tech is playing Duke this weekend. That is what is on the radar screen at the moment. CPJ does not have Georgia on his mind, Clemson on his mind, or anything else on his mind but Duke. And, he is making darn sure that his players keep their heads on Duke as well. The BSC is a mess, and rankings can change from one week to the next. The only thing that matters and determines who plays who ultimately is who keeps winning. Talk is cheap, opinions are like a-holes, everybody has one and winning takes care of it all.

I think the best matchups will be the Orange and Sugar.

we could possible have #1,#2, and #3 all be undefeated.

We could wind up with UF or Texas Or Bama undefeated #1
TCU undefeated #2
Cin undefeated #3

Why all the love for Bama? Actually I like it this way but for the life of me it seems as if the media fols are not looking at the body of work by Florida. The Gators lead the SEC in almost every stat or they are second whereas Bama is down the line in a few areas. In this case stats are for winners. I also know Florida has not yet played its best and believe they will beginning this Saturday.

DawgNation…give up the ref’s lost games for us mantra. It just does not wash. It never has. Makes you sound so high schoolish. Real Dawg fans believe they know the answer and have got it figured out. And it is not the refs that made us so average this season.

UGAy has women too. You can see them quietly grazing in the pastures around Athens.

Auburn will put such a beatdown on the Dawgs. It’s going to be a lovely day to see Dawg Nation bleeding from the stadium in the 3rd quarter.

Then the Kentucky beatdown, followed by the Georgia Tech beatdown, and the end of a wretched 5-7 season and not even the Toilet Bowl to go to.

I haven’t the foggiest idea why Richt is still at AGAy, but I hope he stays forever!

Tech grad here but dawg fan. Was a dawg fan long before I went to college. Tech is definitely my second favorite team and I for one hope they get the chance to play for MNC or at least the best bowl possible. If Ga can’t be there than it might as well be Tech. My gripe is about several articles and television media including I believe Barnhardt where they have had scenarios that led to a possible Fla Ala rematch in the NC game. Reasoning is they are the two best teams. While they say improbable, I say impossible. Has everyone forgot the Ga rule. No team that doesn’t win there conference can play for a tiitle. Or was that a one year rule. If not, then the loser will be out. Let’s please quit changing the rules every year to put who we want in the game. Now that probably is impossible.

STUPID. In addition to the phantum hold call on Clemson, PJ had to run some kind of trick play (I believe Dabo questioned it after the fact) on fake punt out of a time out. As I recall, Allan had a long run on the first play of the game and that was it. IMO, Clemson’s got the best all around team in the Association of Cup Cakes handsdown. Clemson actually reminds me more of an SEC team than an ACC. Maybe we could switch out Vandy for Clemson?

LOL! Let’s see where things are on Sunday. The Jackets play Duke and should… win. CPJ will have the team ready and they will be focused and all on the same page: the result should be a win.

The Pups play Auburn. Based on previous performance, this game ain’t in the bag, by a long shot. Auburn could make the Pups look really bad, or really good, play the game and let’s see what happens.

All the rest of the BCS ranked teams have their own challenge, win this weekend. The BS is really piling up and this weekend may shovel some of it out of the way.

Tech has but one assignment, make the Blue Devils black and blue and send them back to North Carolina with a big L tatooed to their butts. Just keep playing the games and winning. Everything else takes care of itself.

Thats all you got left folks…

I think it’s still a little early to do accurate predictions on these bowls, but Tony’s are very reasonable given what we know today.

I’d go with the Gators over Bama, because of the difference at QB, primarily. Bama may have some mental edge going into the game, wanting to prove themselves after last year, but I still like the mental and physical toughness of this Gator team in the 4th quarter.

This SECCG should be a another very tough, hard fought game, regardless of which team wins, and it might very well be the real national title game, as others have noted. Hopefully both teams have enough time to heal up well to put on great performances in their bowl games. No let downs like Bama had last year against the Utes. It would be great to see the two teams finish 1-2 in the final polls. Gators #1, of course. ;)

If the earlier picks are as stated and the Orange Bowl doesn’t pick Cincinatti or TCU, the Fiesta Bowl will only be able to choose between those two. It won’t have the option of choosing Boise State or a BCS conference’s 2-loss runnerup. The top ranked non-AQ conference winner is guaranteed a spot if it is in the top-12, or ranked higher than an AQ conference winner and in the top-16.

Here are the current ACC salaries, according to USA Today:

Bobby Bowden: $2,319,375 (base $565,875) — record: 4-5

Paul Johnson: $2,300,000 (base $325,000) — record: 9-1

Jim Grobe: $2,172,127 (base $333,333) — record: 4-6

Frank Beamer: $2,138,000 (base $272,328) — record: 6-3

Al Groh: $2,072,339 (base $291,700) — record: 3-6

Ralph Friedgen: $1,877,095 (base $267,468) — record: 2-7

Butch Davis: $1,702,000 — record: 6-3

Tom O’Brien: $1,200,000 (base $625,000) — record: 4-5

Dabo Swinney: $816,850 (base $250,000) — record: 6-3

The salaries for David Cutcliffe, Frank Spaziani and Randy Shannon weren’t available because they coach at private schools, and the private schools don’t have to make those numbers available and so they never do.
