Projecting the BCS bowls

We’re getting down to crunch time, so let’s a take minute to project the five BCS bowls and explain why the matchups will occur.

Just remember that the two bowls that lose their designated conference champs to the BCS title game go to the head of the line when it comes time to pick. The bowl that loses the No. 1 team picks first. The bowl that loses the No. 2 team picks second.

Then remaining conference champs are placed in their designated bowls: Big Ten/Pac-10 to Rose; Big 12 to Fiesta, SEC to Sugar, ACC to Orange.

Then the remaining slots in the games are filled with this order of selection: Orange, Fiesta, Sugar.

So here we go. If you disagree, please tell me why,.

BCS CHAMPIONSHIP, Jan. 7, 2010

Matchup: Alabama vs. Texas

How it happened: Florida and Alabama are locked into the SEC championship game on Dec. 5. They could be ranked 1-2. As was the case a year ago, the winner goes to the big game.  With Baylor, Kansas and Texas A&M left, Texas should cruise to the Big 12 championship game and roll over the North Division champ.

ORANGE BOWL, Jan. 5, 2010

Matchup: Georgia Tech vs. Iowa

How it happened: Georgia Tech beats Duke on Saturday to clinch the ACC Coastal championship and then wins a rematch with Clemson in the ACC title game. After the automatic slots are filled in the BCS, the Orange Bowl will get the first pick. It will take Iowa at 10-2 because those Hawkeyes love to travel South in the winter.

FIESTA BOWL, Jan. 4, 2010

Matchup: USC vs. TCU

How it happened: Because it lost Big 12 champ Texas, the No. 2 team, to the national championship game, the Fiesta gets its pick of teams after the Sugar. Since there is no suitable replacement from the Big 12, the Fiesta takes USC, which will be 10-2 and ranked in the Top 10 if it wins its final three games with Stanford, UCLA, and Arizona. After the Orange takes Iowa, the Fiesta’s choices will be down to Cincinnati, TCU, Boise State or another two-loss conference runner-up. It will take TCU, which could be ranked as high as No. 3.

SUGAR BOWL, Jan. 1, 2010

Matchup: Florida vs. Cincinnati

How it happened: Because the Sugar’s designated champion (SEC) was ranked No. 1, the Sugar gets first pick among all the bowls after the BCS title game. The Sugar fills with Florida, the SEC runner-up. The Sugar will then pick last in the second rotation and will be left with Cincinnati, which gets an automatic bid as the Big East champ.

ROSE BOWL, Jan. 1, 2010

Matchup: Ohio State vs. Oregon

How it happened: Ohio State (8-2) beats Iowa this week and Michigan next week to win the Big Ten championship. Oregon (7-2), which has only one loss in the Pac-10, recovers from its loss to Stanford and beats Arizona State, Arizona, and Oregon State to win the conference.

m, Utah played an easy schedule. Congrats to them on beating Bama but they wouldn’t have a perfect season in the Big 12, Pac 10, SEC, or ACC. Even if they could the schedule does not warrant a spot in even a Top 4 playoff.

Texas lost the Big 12 tie breaker which IMO the SEC should adopt. OU was winning big at the end of the year. Texas further showed they were not up for a debated title with a narrow win over Ohio St.

The BCS gets it correct more times than not. Playoffs have lead to boring regular seasons and most do not tune into the playoffs until the final rounds. March Madness ratings have declined over recent years. CFB is on the rise because it is unique and we are talking about Bowl projections a month early.

You must be bitter because the AP has never put GT #1 at ANY point in ANY season.

Even a 10-win season is a great season for Tech. This is only the 2nd year for CPJ. Once his chips are in order, they will be the king of ACC for years to come.

Tony some good picks here but if I’m betting I’ll bet that things will look a lot different….not that if I predicted they would be any closer but I wouldn’t bet a dime on the Alabama-Florida outcome; both are great teams……too much football still to be played AND injuries, turnovers, and rival games will all have their say. As they always do this time of year.

Bobby Dodd’s last game was the Orange Bowl against Florida. Wouldn’t it be ironic that PJohnson could somehow play Florida to kick off his break out at Tech. I doubt that it would ever happen, but it’s nice thinking about it.

I like Bama’s chances, but I have to say that Florida should be favored. Why? Tebow. He is as clutch as it gets. If Florida can get their offense rolling, they will be very very very hard to beat. Alabama is also is very close to being unbeatable. If McEleroy plays well in the redzone, Bama will almost certainly win. This will be a great game – like last year. GOD, I love college football.

Sorry, Florida is going to beat Bama again. 2 great defenses but the difference again is going to be Tim Tebow. Our field goal kicker can get the ball high in the air as well. Gator D – 9 Games = 8 Touchdowns Allowed……by the defense. 10.1 points allowed per game – #1 in College Football.

I’m a Bama and Bulldog fan but I can’t hate Ga. Tech because they’re a local team. I like to see them win. I do dislike Paul Johnson’s lame interviews. After losing he made the comment that if they had made their blocks they would have won. DUH!!!! When GT can play Ala. Fla. & LSU in the same season and at least win two of three they will be a great team. I don’t think they can win big time games with only a running game. Great teams can pass and run. I think Tech will continue to beat Ga. until Ga. gets a defensive coordinator that can adjust. I’ve seen Ga. get whipped on the same plays all year long, not only does he not adjust in the second half, he hasn’t adjusted from game to game.

way too early to talk about bowl projections…

GT has to finish up Duke at Duke… and GT has been susceptible to big play QB’s.
Every team that has had a servicable QB has had success against the Yellow Jacket defense.

Clemson actually has to beat NCST AND UVA to get to Tampa to even have a shot at GT or Miami…
way too early

Notice all the idiot Dawg fans on this blog? You folks got your annual beatdown and that wasn’t enough??? Your lucky we didn’t try to run up the score on you. Most of you are voting for Bama because you hate us because we beat you like the mangy dogs that you are. Take your hate somewhere else if you can’t be objective. You should be worried about AU and KY before spouting off against the Gators. You should also be checking the weather channel for Shreveport weather because that’s where your lousy team belongs. And, I normally pull for any SEC team when they play out of conference, but your delusional fans make it easy to pull for GT this year. Go Gators!

Hey Dogtards = idiot

Gator was the #2 ACC team within the last 2-3 years. It’s only recently that the peach bowl has switched. I’d imagine it will renegotiate with the SEC too soon and get the #3 sec team (after sugar and after capital one). Peach sells more tickets year to year than any other bowl, is easier to get to for most fans, and is located in the soon-to-be college football capital of the world. No reason it shouldn’t be #2 ACC and #2/#3 SEC.

Also, we were booing the 2 chop blocks (in the first half), the holding call that brought back a 66 yard reverse for a TD, the roughing the kicker call that gave Wake 4 points, roughing the passer call, etc. We were getting penalized like uga for the first half of the wake game. i knew you were being sarcastic – i was making the point that we weren’t booing our players just like you werent booing AJ.

And yes, you whooped our butts in the first half. Luckily we whooped yours worse in the second.

“Thwarting foes like NC State, Duke and Maryland.”

Can’t really be that much different than Thwarting foes like Vandy, Miss St, and Kentucky. We’ve played more of the SEC bottom dwellers than the ACC bottom dwellers (didn’t play NC State or Maryland)

To all my fellow dawgs. Relax. Dawgs beat tech with ease this year. 17 – 21 points (say 37 – 17), but it want be that close.

Auburn on the other hand will be a test. Beat Auburn and we’re looking at an 8 – 4 rebuilding year with a trip to the chic-fil-a bowl with a match-up against Miami the most likely scenario. Nerds will more than likely lose to Clemson in the ACC CG and head down to the Gator bowl.

I just wish there was some sort of filter on these blogs to get rid of any comments not pertinent to the subject originally written about, in this case, BCS Bowl Projesctions.

Last time I looked, UGA was not remotely considered in any BCS scenario, hmmmmm.

Now, back the the subject. I do not think Iowa gets to the Orange, not with another loss to Ohio State. I would think either Cinci, TCU or BSU is more likely. Will GT get there, hope so, but Duke and the Coastal Div Champ still stand in the way and none of those are a given. DUKE is the only game to worry about right now. Looking any further only dilutes FOCUS.

I would have to give the nod to UF over Alabama.

It pisses me off to see USC get into the Fiesta with two losses, especially given who those losses were to.

Anyway, no use speculating who goes where now, too much football left to play. Speculating now is as good as putting out rankings before October.

fair, fair. you may think it will eventually be sec #3, and I do too, but fact of the matter is that it historically hasn’t been. what it has historically been is a prime example of sec dominance over the acc. we all know about last year, and I think i’ve already brought up 2006 when the dawgs had there worst year under Richt, yet still managed to win the ACC against tech and va tech in the peach bowl. atlanta is already the college football capital of the world just because of its location. the heart of the sec, home of the sec championship (which has been a de facto national championship for the past 4 years), and even the heart of the sec wash-out conference.

your assessment on sec and acc bottom feeders is fairly accurate, except that the acc bottom feeders and the middle of the pack in the acc are pretty much the same since they cycle in and out yearly. wake, duke, unc, maryland, virginia, nc state will always be terrible…there is no changeing that. unc, might have been the biggest joke of the year besides my dawgs. you have to also consider that kentucky and miss st are on the rise. with mullen miss st will become a program to be reckoned with, and ole miss will be back to the bottom in the west. kentucky beats someone in the top 25 every year. hard to say that for any of the acc bottom feeders. vandy is the only real consistently bad team in the sec, and they obviously can score some points….
