Projecting the BCS bowls

We’re getting down to crunch time, so let’s a take minute to project the five BCS bowls and explain why the matchups will occur.

Just remember that the two bowls that lose their designated conference champs to the BCS title game go to the head of the line when it comes time to pick. The bowl that loses the No. 1 team picks first. The bowl that loses the No. 2 team picks second.

Then remaining conference champs are placed in their designated bowls: Big Ten/Pac-10 to Rose; Big 12 to Fiesta, SEC to Sugar, ACC to Orange.

Then the remaining slots in the games are filled with this order of selection: Orange, Fiesta, Sugar.

So here we go. If you disagree, please tell me why,.

BCS CHAMPIONSHIP, Jan. 7, 2010

Matchup: Alabama vs. Texas

How it happened: Florida and Alabama are locked into the SEC championship game on Dec. 5. They could be ranked 1-2. As was the case a year ago, the winner goes to the big game.  With Baylor, Kansas and Texas A&M left, Texas should cruise to the Big 12 championship game and roll over the North Division champ.

ORANGE BOWL, Jan. 5, 2010

Matchup: Georgia Tech vs. Iowa

How it happened: Georgia Tech beats Duke on Saturday to clinch the ACC Coastal championship and then wins a rematch with Clemson in the ACC title game. After the automatic slots are filled in the BCS, the Orange Bowl will get the first pick. It will take Iowa at 10-2 because those Hawkeyes love to travel South in the winter.

FIESTA BOWL, Jan. 4, 2010

Matchup: USC vs. TCU

How it happened: Because it lost Big 12 champ Texas, the No. 2 team, to the national championship game, the Fiesta gets its pick of teams after the Sugar. Since there is no suitable replacement from the Big 12, the Fiesta takes USC, which will be 10-2 and ranked in the Top 10 if it wins its final three games with Stanford, UCLA, and Arizona. After the Orange takes Iowa, the Fiesta’s choices will be down to Cincinnati, TCU, Boise State or another two-loss conference runner-up. It will take TCU, which could be ranked as high as No. 3.

SUGAR BOWL, Jan. 1, 2010

Matchup: Florida vs. Cincinnati

How it happened: Because the Sugar’s designated champion (SEC) was ranked No. 1, the Sugar gets first pick among all the bowls after the BCS title game. The Sugar fills with Florida, the SEC runner-up. The Sugar will then pick last in the second rotation and will be left with Cincinnati, which gets an automatic bid as the Big East champ.

ROSE BOWL, Jan. 1, 2010

Matchup: Ohio State vs. Oregon

How it happened: Ohio State (8-2) beats Iowa this week and Michigan next week to win the Big Ten championship. Oregon (7-2), which has only one loss in the Pac-10, recovers from its loss to Stanford and beats Arizona State, Arizona, and Oregon State to win the conference.

What makes everyone think Tim Teblow can score on the Alabama defense? AND what about Mark Ingram? Do you really think Florida can bottle him up the entire game?

FLNavigator, I agree. The offense will actually be better I believe. The key to them being really good will be if Hernandez returns. The offense will actually look like they did with Chris Leak and you are correct, if the linebackers are good the defense will be really good again. I heard that Haden will stay to be on the same team as his little brother is has committed to UF.

They bottle up Ms State feature back and he has as many yards as Ingram. If you doubt Tebow can score on the BAMA D, what does that say about McElroy scoring on the UF D?

The major disagreements I have are the Orange Bowl and the Rose Bowl. Of course with my selections it would also shift the Fiesta and Sugar a bit.

I think that Clemson beats GT in Tampa. They showed they can shut PJ’s offense down and without the trick play or the pooch punt return the Tigers win in Atlanta. So CU in the Orange.

I also don’t see Oregon beating Arizona. The Wildcats offense is potent and if Luck and Gerhart can get off like that on the Ducks then Stoops’ squad can score at least 38 as well. This creates a 3, if not 4 way tie in the Pac10. Meaning USC is again the likely Rose Bowl candidate and the Fiesta chooses between Oregon and Arizona.

Hey
WHo? Ohio St? Usc? Miami’s 2 losses are to 2 ranked teams. Can’t say the same for Ohio st, soon to be Iowa, Usc, etc. Miami will be around 10 by the end of the season and will get the other bcs spot. Not some joke crap big 10 team.

Starting with the BCSNCG, I’m locked into disagreement for two reasons. First, at seasons start I had Texas- Florida in the BCSCG. I’ll stick with it. Second, offensively Bama cannot live on the threat of Ingram Alone in the Dome. The same will be said of Florida and Tebow. The weak link for Alabama remains the play of Brantley. To compensate for Brantley, they have a hellava team but crunch time in the Dome won’t keep him from making mistakes against the Florida defense. Watching Alabama a bit more closely since the Tennessee game, I’ve noticed a scheme over there and I don’t think they’ll be able to exploit Florida with it for 60 minutes. There’s a third reason also. Satan Saban vs Saint Tebow, good vs evil. Good shall triumph and inherit the earth. The glitch for Saint Tebow will be the better work of Saint McCoy in January…BUT I could be wrong about everything.

PTC Dawg- Most GT fans haven’t yet chalked that up as a victory. Right now, we’re focused on “finishing the drill” with Duke. I see you like relishing the underdog role. How does it keep getting better and better?

Mr CF haven’t you learned a darn thing yet, about betting against Tebow. Bama will struggle vs. the Florida defense and win the turnover battle. McElroy won’t have any heroics to save the Tide this time.

Don’t think that USC can’t slip up versus either Stanford or Arizona both are playing very well and much better than USC is right now. Also, I think both Boise and TCU get BCS bids…leaving Iowa out with two losses after this week.

Drake, I agree with all you said except one key difference: Ohio State and USC travel well to away games, and Miami doesn’t even fill up the home field unless UF or FSU play there. Bowls are about money and if the Bowl Committee chooses between UM or OSU or USC, UM will loose out every time because of the $$$. If it was just football, UM would win but unfortunately it is about the $$.

The only one I have a hard time seeing is USC in the Fiesta. They have blown it and shouldn’t get into a BCS game this year. They should take another team above them. I’m not sure who though..Boise St? Nah, I’m not a fan of Boise getting in with that schedule, but they did beat Oregon, which in turn beat USC so..

“wow. you and your traitor coach will see come late november when your own stadium is half full of dawgs.”

You are delusional if you think that many mutts are gonna be able to get tickets this year. Mark my words, it will be 50k jackets, 7k gas station attendees. Tech fans aren’t selling their tickets and, instead, are buying them (I’ve been asked by at least 3-4 separate Tech fans in the past week if I knew anyone with extras). Not that Tech is a lock to win by any means, but a lot of uog fans feel like you guys will get killed – maybe they aren’t real fans but guess what? They aren’t buying tickets, either.

Iowa probably won’t be top 14 after they lose twice, so I don’t think they’ll be able to make it. I bet Boise ends up in the Fiesta and Cincy in the Orange.

“the fact that 90% of our fan base is there when we are playing tenn tech is a statement in itself. and i’m not really sure how you are able to compare croddy dodd to sanford when uga wasn’t even on tv??????”

First, uga was on TV, you just had to pay for it. Second, it boosts attendance figures when it costs less to go to the game than see it on TV. If it was on cable there would only have been 50k people there.

We may be overrated, but if the pollsters can’t wait to drop us they certainly wouldn’t have moved us up three spots. They easily could have left Iowa at 7 or had any team behind us leapfrog us. Not that it matters, all we care about is beating DUKE.

“you guys can beat wake and overtime!!! that’s quite the accomplishment!!”

It’s much better than getting monkey stomped by Tennessee.

“acc is awful, any one loss sec team would be #5 right now.”

And a one loss ACC team is #7. What’s your point?

“they think boise state is better than you!!”

They think boise is better than you too genius. Nice use of logic mutt. Go ahead and ring up a #1 for me please. No pickles and a diet lemonade.

TB, I don’t agree with all your projections. I see Florida in NC and Alabama in Sugar. I think Cincinnati will lose one of their remaining games then I see the Big East Champion (Pitt or Cincy) playing in the Orange Bowl. I think Boise will stay undefeated and play Alabama … too much pressure for bowls to skip over undefeated Boise or TCU the way things have fallen … wont take two loss teams (additionally some of those are bad losses). I also think that USC has a good chance to lose again. If a two loss team was going to be in Orange Bowl, wouldnt they take Miami over Iowa?

His next stop will be at the bank to cash his huge “raise” check. He’s not going anywhere. His history shows that his teams always perform better in the 2nd year, and he’s done it again. Just imagine how things will be when he has a team fully loaded with athletes he recruited. We Dog fans may not like it, but Tech will hold on to Johnson for quite some time.

Yea, we’ve all been asked for extra tickets. Glad to see that’s the first time that has happened for ya’ll. Welcome to the football world Georgia Tech! I agree with your national tv argument; however, you’re being a little drastic. Would have been more like 80,000 instead of 90,000. Either way, that’s more people than the nerds will ever have at a game. But you didn’t dispute the fact that PJ will leave your program if given more money…interesting. I mean I believe this, but I didn’t think the suddenly tech faithful would even understand this concept. Tenn. and monte kiffin wouldn’t give up 100 yards to your defense. Plain and simple, he is the best coordinator in the world right now and would “monkey stomp” all over PJ’s gobbler. I guess you didn’t get the memo? UGA is harder to get into the tech. I went there, graduated recently… so yes, I’ll take the premium gas, and yes go ahead and wipe down my windshield and shine those tires. while you’re at it…get a clue about your meaningless program. this is a one season thing boyssssssssssssssssssssssss.

you may be right, but I think a higher profile program will go after Johnson. Notre Dame? People bandy about excuses for ND….pointing out their academic requirements. the academic requirements argument is a joke and if any of you think otherwise you are clueless. you guys really think nesbitt has any clue what’s going on in the classroom? the fact of the matter is, ga tech has no money in their athletic program compared to any team in the SEC, half of the teams in the ACC and especially the aforementioned notre dame.

No doubt he will be on a lot of team’s radar, but I don’t think he’ll go to Notre Dame. I just don’t think it has the mystique it once had. Besides, Johnson is a good ol’ southern boy now. He will be the force in the ACC, have a shot at yearly BCS bowls, and his pay is sure to rise.

Hey Dogtards

I agree with Maddog. PJ is making a good bit of money. There aren’t a whole lot of fanbases out there who would want to run his scheme. I think Notre Dame is gonna go after Kelly if they fire CW. Oklahoma, Texas, or Nebraska are two other teams, but I think they stay put. Bama is staying put.

Big thing is, CPJ can live in a nice house in a big city and can draw from a great recruiting base. All you puppies out there who live in Atlanta – if someone doubled your salary would you want to move to South Bend? Austin? Norman? I wouldn’t want to do it personally. He’s also from the southeast so Atlanta is much closer to home than any Big 10 or Big 12 school. PJ is also a football historian and Tech’s got a great football history.

I just don’t see him wanting to go anywhere. He’s reestablishing the program here and has plenty of resources to tap into. He’s also the opposite of Petrino (4 schools since 1987).
