Projecting the BCS bowls

We’re getting down to crunch time, so let’s a take minute to project the five BCS bowls and explain why the matchups will occur.

Just remember that the two bowls that lose their designated conference champs to the BCS title game go to the head of the line when it comes time to pick. The bowl that loses the No. 1 team picks first. The bowl that loses the No. 2 team picks second.

Then remaining conference champs are placed in their designated bowls: Big Ten/Pac-10 to Rose; Big 12 to Fiesta, SEC to Sugar, ACC to Orange.

Then the remaining slots in the games are filled with this order of selection: Orange, Fiesta, Sugar.

So here we go. If you disagree, please tell me why,.

BCS CHAMPIONSHIP, Jan. 7, 2010

Matchup: Alabama vs. Texas

How it happened: Florida and Alabama are locked into the SEC championship game on Dec. 5. They could be ranked 1-2. As was the case a year ago, the winner goes to the big game.  With Baylor, Kansas and Texas A&M left, Texas should cruise to the Big 12 championship game and roll over the North Division champ.

ORANGE BOWL, Jan. 5, 2010

Matchup: Georgia Tech vs. Iowa

How it happened: Georgia Tech beats Duke on Saturday to clinch the ACC Coastal championship and then wins a rematch with Clemson in the ACC title game. After the automatic slots are filled in the BCS, the Orange Bowl will get the first pick. It will take Iowa at 10-2 because those Hawkeyes love to travel South in the winter.

FIESTA BOWL, Jan. 4, 2010

Matchup: USC vs. TCU

How it happened: Because it lost Big 12 champ Texas, the No. 2 team, to the national championship game, the Fiesta gets its pick of teams after the Sugar. Since there is no suitable replacement from the Big 12, the Fiesta takes USC, which will be 10-2 and ranked in the Top 10 if it wins its final three games with Stanford, UCLA, and Arizona. After the Orange takes Iowa, the Fiesta’s choices will be down to Cincinnati, TCU, Boise State or another two-loss conference runner-up. It will take TCU, which could be ranked as high as No. 3.

SUGAR BOWL, Jan. 1, 2010

Matchup: Florida vs. Cincinnati

How it happened: Because the Sugar’s designated champion (SEC) was ranked No. 1, the Sugar gets first pick among all the bowls after the BCS title game. The Sugar fills with Florida, the SEC runner-up. The Sugar will then pick last in the second rotation and will be left with Cincinnati, which gets an automatic bid as the Big East champ.

ROSE BOWL, Jan. 1, 2010

Matchup: Ohio State vs. Oregon

How it happened: Ohio State (8-2) beats Iowa this week and Michigan next week to win the Big Ten championship. Oregon (7-2), which has only one loss in the Pac-10, recovers from its loss to Stanford and beats Arizona State, Arizona, and Oregon State to win the conference.

mike rinkin…hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. the same can be said about those schools in the sec, and probably the big 12. i agree that the pac 10 is having a much better year than the past, but better than the sec? nope. maybe better than the big 12. I will say that the sec, pac 10 and big 12 are leaps and bounds ahead of the other conferences.

Rick — There might be more teams from the ACC in the rankings than “usual,” but (as of this week’s BCS poll) the ACC doesn’t have the most ranked teams of any conference.

But neither does the SEC or Big 12 (to mention two conferences with teams in the top 3). Here is the current breakdown by conference (subject to change next week, of course):

ACC: 3
Big East: 4
Big 10: 4
Big 12: 2
CUSA: 1
MW: 3
PAC 10: 4
SEC: 3
WAC: 1

very true, the were up big in the Clemson game, but being up 24-0 and then having to kick a last second field goal only exposes a weak defense.

I think R-Wreck1378 mentioned something about how Tech fell behind early at Miami and were forced to play catch up, and throw the ball more than they would have liked. I have to think that if any team can come out and get up on Tech early and force them out of their ball-control comfort zone, then anything could happen. Paul Johnsons offense is a grind. It grinds a defense down, it grinds the clock down. He wears you down until you do something stupid and he nails you.

the big east is garbage, we all know this. i mean Auburn the 5th best team in the sec beat west virginia easy. and they could still be conference champs in the big east if they win out.

Look at all these Tech fans… All of these guys shunned football and denied it’s existence at their school until last year. Talk about a “new money” syndrome. Wait till Georgia Tech starts to wane a little as these fans fall back into obscurity.

With that second rate defense, Georgia Tech’s not going anywhere.

More moron UGA fans on the AJC blogs. You guys are priceless.

Tech has die hard fans, there are just less of us from years of UGA bandwagonning in the state. Tech travels well- just not to Boise or SF. But I have been to two Gator Bowls and a Champs Bowl where we easily filled our allotment. We will easily take 30-40K to any BCS bowl.

Saying FL is ranked first in every category is crazy. If you factor in the Strength of Schedule(Bama around 15, FL around 45), I think Bama defense is ranked higher.

You can always count on HBTD to show his smarts. About 1:30 p.m., the attendeance of the 2006 ACCCG was posted as 62,850. HBTD’s comment after it the attendance was posted was that he was talking about butts in seats not ticket sales. Dou you think he is too stupid to know what attendance means?

I notice that you have Iowa in the Orange Bowl. But you also have them losing to Ohio State this weekend.

Is an Iowa team that loses 2 out of last three to an average to above-average Ohio State team and a mediocre at best Northwestern, and only has one somewhat signature win over Penn State, really BCS worthy?

I know LSU can’t go becuase of the 3 team rule(another thing wrong with current BCS system), but what about Pittsburgh or Utah(last year’s BCS buster)? Just some thoughts.

that’s not a link to the ACCCG. It’s a link to IPTAY members to request to buy tickets for the ACCCG which you are correct… every school offers and offers at the beginning of the year.
