Georgia Tech moves one step closer to ACC title game

Made a couple of mistakes last week when I thought Ole Miss had figured things out and would beat Auburn and that Kentucky would win at home against Mississippi State. That gave us a record of 8-2 on the week and 67-23 on the season.

So let’s get on with the Fearless Friday Forecast for the first Saturday in November:

1. Wake Forest at Georgia Tech: It’s tough for any team to get ready to play Georgia Tech in just four days. Deacons’ quarterback Riley Skinner (concussion) was cleared to play on Friday which gives them a chance to control the football and keep the Tech offense off the field.  Still, Georgia Tech is a hot team that is at the top of its game. Jackets take one step closer to the ACC championship game in Tampa. Georgia Tech 31, Wake Forest 17.

2. Tennessee Tech at Georgia: It has not been a fun week to be a Bulldog. Coach Mark Richt has decided to stick with quarterback Joe Cox for a stretch drive that also includes Auburn, Kentucky and Georgia Tech. This game has to help Cox with his confidence, which can’t be very high right now. Georgia 42, Tennessee Tech 13.

3. LSU at Alabama: No question in my mind that LSU has a shot here because the Tigers have the athletes to match up with the No. 3 Crimson Tide. Both teams will use the same defensive game plan: Stop the run and force the quarterback to make plays. But I think the Alabama defensive front is better and can put more pressure on LSU’s Jordan Jefferson. LSU has to take some chances and throw the ball down the field. Alabama will intercept at least two passes and win a tough, vintage SEC game. Alabama 17, LSU 13.

4. South Carolina at Arkansas: The Head Ball Coach at South Carolina (6-3) really could use this game. After last week’s loss to Tennessee, where the Gamecocks gave away too many points with turnovers, Steve Spurrier is facing the real possibility of a very tough finish. South Carolina hosts No. 1 Florida next week and finishes with Clemson in Columbia. I just think Arkansas QB Ryan Mallett is playing better right now than Stephen Garcia. The Hogs win at home. Arkansas 24, South Carolina 17.

5. Vanderbilt at Florida: We know Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes will sit out this game. Today we should find out if head coach Urban Meyer will be joining him for his comments about officiating. If Meyer sits it will give defensive coordinator Charlie Strong, who should have been a head coach long ago, to improve his head coaching record to 1-1. Strong was the interim coach in the 2004 Chick-fil-A Bowl after Ron Zook was fired. Florida lost to Miami. Gators roll and get ready to go to Columbia. Florida 42, Vanderbilt 6.

6. Florida State at Clemson: This one is basically an elimination game in the ACC Atlantic. Clemson has played well the past three weeks thanks to the big plays by C.J. Spiller. Florida State QB Christian Ponder has been a warrior, keeping the Seminoles in the game while the defense struggles. I’m giving the edge to Clemson at home. Clemson 38, Florida State 35.

7. Duke at North Carolina: Duke (5-3) still needs two wins to become bowl eligible because the Blue Devils played Division II team N.C. Central. But more importantly, they need another ACC win to set up next week’s Coastal Division showdown with Georgia Tech. David Cutcliffe has significantly improved the program in less than two years. Beating the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill would be his signature victory to date. This week’s upset special. Duke 31, North Carolina 30.

8. Ohio State at Penn State: Ohio State (7-2) can still go to the Rose Bowl if the Buckeyes can win their final three games against Penn State, Iowa, and Michigan. But the Buckeyes still have an issue with sophomore quarterback Terrelle Pryor. He is a wonderful athlete who has yet to learn how to play the position. Pryor, a Pennsylvania native, will not have a good Homecoming. Penn State 20, Ohio State 10.

9. Oklahoma at Nebraska: Remember when we used to look forward to this game? After losing three games by a total of five points to BYU, Miami, and Texas, and losing its Heisman Trophy quarterback (Sam Bradford) to injury, Oklahoma (5-3) wants to finish 9-3 and go to the Cotton Bowl. Nebraska is struggling on offense, big time. Both have great defenses but Oklahoma has more guys who can make plays. Oklahoma 24, Nebraska 20.

10. Navy at Notre Dame: I’m not a big believer in the Irish (6-2), who can still go to a BCS bowl if they finish 10-2. Navy is finally healthy and will get quarterback Ricky Dobbs (16 TD rushing) back for this game. It is tempting to go with the Middies but I believe Jimmy Clausen will be able to throw the ball on the Navy defense. Notre Dame 31, Navy 21.

I agree GTMike. Vandy is the unsung hero of the SEC. It is only media bias (and their 0 for 5 SEC record) that keeps them locked out of the SECCG in December. GT makes ALL SEC teams look bad. Too bad they can’t play the Gators — they’d show them a thing or two!

All kidding aside though, you’re right about one thing: Vandy probably won’t score any points in this game. They rarely do when facing even a mediocre defense.

FSU’s D cant stop ANYONE.

I’ll go WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY out on a limb and make this HIGHLY IMPROBABLE prediction:

Florida Satte will upset Florida at The Swamp on November 28th.

In what will be Mickey Andrews last game
(and most likely Bowden’s last game)FSU will SHOCK THE WORLD.

Spurrier NEVER won at Doak-Campbell.

And, ABSOLUTELY NOBODY ever would have believed Ron Zook could go

Crazier things have happened.

RonnieGarDner,

“Couple that with the fact that Tony never really mentioned the Tenn Alabama game even though he said he would talk more about it later in the week”

I have to agree with you on this comment. Very said that this game didn’t get mentioned at all this week. It’s a huge game that I’m actually really looking forward to watching. It may not have the offensive fireworks that get great ratings, but you know that pads will be popping in T-town. This will be a straight up street fight in pads and I for one am glad I can just enjoy it without having my team involved. It would be interesting if the offenses came out and surprised us (i.e. UGA vs. USC), but I think I’d enjoy a more physical game with tension throughout. Again probably because UF isn’t involved.

In any case, good luck to the Bammers and Tigers both. Great teams that will make formidable opponents in a month or so. Really looking forward to going to the Dome against whoever we play.

Will be fun to watch P-Pat and C. Jones take on Julio, Maze, and Peek. Richardson is a wildcard and Ingram is always fun to watch. If Jefferson has a break out game, watch out, and you never know when the two LSU receivers will go off. They’re great and make the tough catches look easy. Because of the celebration nonsense, it’s easily forgotten just how good they played against the Dawgs. They made incredible grabs all day. Any chance we have a Reuben and/or Sheppard sighting?

Bama is rested, McElroy was good with short pass(he did pretty well against Tennessee actually), and LSU’s defense is not as good as Tennessee. They should be better than 17-13.

People gave McElroy too much pressure to throw to Julio while Julio is not his healthy self. That’s how McElroy got messed up.

“Normally on Thursdays we have Five Burning Questions. Today, we only have two:” (yesterday)

Wake Forest is the one team in the ACC that could slow down Georgia Tech’s offense just because they have over the years run a very similar type of offense so their defense has seen it more in practice. I don’t think Wake wins but don’t be surprised if they are able to slow Tech down in the first half and this game is close going into the 4th quarter.

If Clemson wins big against Florida State then it’s obvious they figured (Fixed) something out after the Maryland game and the ACC Championship game could finally be a sell out and exciting.

Yes, Georgia is a win. And if Miss St and Vandy are no big deal, how can “Every week is tough game in the SEC”, unless every week means Florida, Alabama or LSU, the rest are leftovers JUST LIKE EVERY OTHER CONFERENCE. Why can you not stop talking about the insignificant conference, hmmmmm, why, because your obsessed, your in love with Duke and you have posters of Paul Johnson hanging over you bed…….Geogia can’t claim superiority based on the fact that they are in the same conference with Florida, they are still just Georgia.

Top Concerns for the Old Gold & Black visitors to Bobby Dodd Stadium tomorrow:

1. Hot, confident, explosive Tech team
2. health of QB Riley Skinner
3. Coach PJ rarely, if ever, allows letdowns
4. heartbreak hangover from excruciating defeat last week to Canes?
5. Deacon confidence/mindset (i.e., expecting something bad to happen) after three Ls by 3 pts. and one L by 1 pt.

Does the game w/ Navy two weeks ago help us tomorrow? Maybe. But then again we allowed the Midshipmen 330 yds. rushing that day. Against all odds, the Deacs will need the following to have a chance:

• +2 to 3 in the turnover dept. (including no Skinner INTs)
• no Tech special teams plays or receptions over 25 yds.
• limit the Jackets to 250 yd. rushing or less (they avrg. 304 ypg)

Denver Dog; Complaining about UGA’s schedule won’t win you any sympathy from the GA Tech faithful, my friend. Georgia only played 4 games in October, including one at home, and one that UGA chooses to play in Jacksonville, and then 2 games in the state of Tennessee. By the way, Georgia one 1 game, and lost 3 during that stretch.

On the other hand, GA Tech played 5 games in the month of October, and played in 5 different states (Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, Virginia, and Tennessee). And since I mentioned Georgia’s won/loss record during your October stretch, I think that it’s only fair I do the same for the Jackets – 5 wins and 0 losses.

Be careful of what you complain of, my friend.

bb

Talk about insignificant conference. To be significant you have to play ranked teams and win. For a conference that means OOC games.

The SEC has only one win against an OOC ranked team this year. They have only played 4 (1-3). The ACC has played twice that amount and won 3 (3-5 for the mathmatically challenged). In fact the ACC is 2-1 against top 10 OOC foes this year. So, the ACC has beat twice as many top 10 OOC foes as the SEC has top 25.

If you look at games against currently ranked teams the SEC doesn’t fair much better with a 1-4 record (picked up a loss) and the ACC is still 3-5.

Who would you say has been more ‘relevant’ on the national level??

Throughout the preseason the LSU-Bama game was frequently discussed on this blog about being a key game in the West. It is even bigger than many of us predicted as the Tide has a great chance to make it to the NC game. Many of us including me did not have LSU among the contenders for the BCS title before the season and they are in the mix. TB, I typically enjoy your work but I am disappointed that there has been basically no discussion about this game this week.

Here are my picks:
Tech 38 Wake 21
Dawgs 42 Tn Tech 7
Bama 24 LSU 13
SC 21 Ark 20
Gators 49 Vandy 3
Clemson 34 FSU 31
NC 20 Duke 17

Here’s the deal, Tony. Everyone has pretty much caught on with your song and dance.

Your picks are a joke because you’re not using the lines. Like someone above said…”You actually count your Florida and Georgia picks in your ongoing record?” What a joke. Quit keeping up with your picks, dude. You pick favorites every friggin’ week with all 10 picks and this week you finally pick an underdog in Duke. (pretty sure it’s a buddy pick for Cutcliffe, though)

If you never use the point spread (which is silly to make picks without doing so), then don’t tally up your wins and tout yourself as being “Mr. College Football.” My grandma can pick 10 favorites each week.

Tell us things we DON’T already know.

Another thing…. I have to side with some of the UT fans on here that are incredulous to the fact that you haven’t mentioned them at all when talking about games. (and I’m a Dawg fan) I hate the Vols but am aware enough that they’ve definitely played some good, damn football lately.

Finally, it’s a blog, not a column. In this century, the writer of said blog interacts with its loyal readers. One example of how it’s done would be on DOB’s blog (without the condescension or barbeque talk, of course).

Let Schlabach start writing this blog.

bb

Furthermore, I love seeing comments that GT’s best win is against VT which is not as impressive given their subsequent loss and drop in the polls. You are aware that the SEC’s ONLY quality OOC win came against that same team, aren’t you? Beyond the VT win there is a whole lot of Fla Atl, La-Lafayette, W. Ky and the like. The SEC’s next best win is against Washington. Washington? Are you kidding me? This is what you are crowing about?

ACWho?

November 6th, 2009

Yes, bb, it seems like most people in the USA feel that the ACC is “more relevant” than the SEC.

In your dreams.

Tech75

November 6th, 2009
11:57 am

bb – as long as Tony B. and others speak of the SEC as the “best conference”, and writers continue to tout that winning the SEC is a golden road to the NC game, SEC teams will not change their scheduling behavior.

The writers are going to have to start dinging the major SEC teams for scheduling really weak OOC competition – “paid victims”. They’re essentially playing an 8 or 9 game schedule. Poetic justice (although I’m not wishing it, so don’t get me wrong) would be for one of these teams that schedule these patsies to incur a season-ending injury to a key player.

On the other hand, the counter argument is “The SEC is tough enough – look at what happens with Southern Cal – they go OOC, play the best teams, get jacked up and win those games, then suffer letdowns against Stanford, Oregon St., Washington…”. You could argue that any team only has so much emotion it can call upon during a season, and you have to manage it wisely.

I liked your breakdown yesterday between the 2 teams. You definitely have the edge on the WRs and DBs. The only thing I disagreed with you is you gave us the edge on RBs. I would have to call that a draw. We go 3-4 deep but LSU has Charles Scott who is as good as anyone and Keiland Williams who can hit the edge. Not to mention some trick plays here and there where Sheperd will get the ball.

All in all I’m looking forward to a great game. Just don’t know if I can stand another finish like the UT game without keeling over with a stroke. How do you work that out? Tech went 7-6 in 2007.
My grandkid knows 7 > 6

And to the Dawg fans who think they have some kind of divine right to have great results year in and year out

Has UGA been better than GT over the last 40 years? Yes
Is Richt likely to improve UGA’s record next year? Yes

Are there any guarantees that UGA will go to the top of the rankings? No

It will take good recruiting, good coaching, hard work and a good attitude for UGA to get to where all you Dawg Fans think you “belong”. It doesn’t happen by divine right.

You can talk about the size of the stadium, amount of donations to the athletic fund, number of wins, number of NC’s, number of Heisman winners, etc. but it doesn’t guarantee you’ll win on the field.
Look at ND and Michigan. Both are more storied than UGA and GT.
Michigan has a bigger stadium, more money, more total wins, more NC’s, etc than UGA and it hasn’t helped win games.

Richt should turn it around at UGA – especially with some changes in his coaches – but you are all indulging in wishful thinking if you think it is guaranteed
